UFC on ESPN 11: Gadelha vs. Jędrzejczyk III

Date: Saturday of Week 1 of November 2020 Location: Arizona

Attendance: 4,681 Gate: $823,856

Critical Rating: 76% Commercial Rating: 79%

Commentary Team: Jon Anik, Joe Rogan and Dan Hardy

Preliminary Card

Tkxf1yY.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg71683zh.jpg

Featherweight: Spike Carlyle (10-1) vs. Luis Pena (8-2)

Pena dropped Carlyle early on and had him in trouble; Carlyle hung on in there to keep the fight going, but that early dominance from Pena told the story of the fight. Although Carlyle was never in real danger again, and he did put in a good showing, he was never ‘in’ the fight and never troubled Pena at all.

Result: 'Violent Bob Ross' Luis Pena beat Spike 'The Alpha Ginger' Carlyle by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

hEAznID.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgZz7dFCz.jpg

Lightweight: Joe Lauzon (28-15) vs. Nik Lentz (30-11, 2NC)

This fight was very poor; that’s all you need to know. Nik Lentz is quite boring; I wish that he would go.

Result: Nik 'The Carnie' Lentz beat Joe 'J-Lau' Lauzon by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

dXdwTHD.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgCTFvGDk.jpg

Middleweight: Antonio Braga Neto (9-4, 1NC) vs. Punahele Soriano (8-0)

Soriano’s superiority in the clinch and in grappling spelled the difference in this fight. Neto tried his best to get into the fight, and he did have his moments, but Neto didn’t have enough of them and Soriano cruised to the unanimous decision victory.

Soriano’s post-fight interview saw him challenge Brendan Allen.

Result: Punahele 'Story Time' Soriano beat Antonio Braga Neto by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

Rq8q15R.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpglyxu5uo.jpg

Heavyweight: Tyler East (16-6) vs. Ben Sosoli (8-3, 2NC)

This wasn’t the most exciting of fights consisting as it did mostly of the fighters clinched up, but it wasn’t bad. Tyler East was making his UFC debut and, whilst he put in a decent showing and got the win, he’ll have to do more if he wants to break out of the pack and became a name in the heavyweight division.

Result: Tyler 'The Beast' East beat Ben 'Combat Wombat' Sosoli by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

AYezxwC.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgJLJK6EU.jpg

Welterweight: Alex Morono (18-6, 1NC) vs. Sheldon Westcott (10-3-1)

Morono used a lot of clinch work, mainly based around the Muay Thai clinch to dominate the fight, and it eventually paid big dividends late in the second round when he delivered a brutal knee to side of the face of Westcott and knocked him out cold.

With his next opponent in mind, Morono issued a challenge to Jake Matthews in his post-fight interview.

Result: Alex 'The Great White' Morono beat Sheldon Westcott by knockout (knee) in 3:09 of Round 2

o73bR69.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg6WSZe2a.jpg

Flyweight: David Dvorak (18-4) vs. Raulian Paiva (19-4)

This was a great brawl with both men drawing blood; Paiva busted Dvorak open almost right away, with Dvorak returning the favour in the second round. It was a very even fight so, whilst a 30-27 score for Dvorak was viable, it was unfortunate for Paivia that all three judges scored the fight like that, because he certainly deserved to win at least one round and maybe more.

Result: 'Killa Khroust' David Dvorak beat Raulian Paiva by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

6UcsyR5.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg9XInuzF.jpg

Bantamweight: Brett Johns (17-2) vs. Umar Nurmagomedov (13-0)[/i

Although he had his problems at various times, and the judging of the fight also suggested otherwise, Bret Johns was the dominant fighter as he made great use of clinching and throws to control the fight. Such was the frustration of Nurmagomedov that he grabbed the cage at one point to stop from being taken down, a move which earned him a verbal warning from the referee.

Such was the contention of Nurmagomedov getting the fight on one of the scorecards that Johns made a point of bringing it up in his post-fight interview, Johns wondering how anyone saw the fight for Nurmagomedov.

Result: Brett 'The Pikey' Johns beat Umar Nurmagomedov by split decision (29-28, 29-28 and 28-29)

HoCXanM.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgNNPCjGH.jpg

Women’s Bantamweight: Pannie Kianzad (13-6) vs. Sara McMann (12-6)

The first round was a definitive one in favour of McMann who took Kianzad down early with a big slam and controlled her for the rest of the round, mostly on the ground, but also against the cage when Kianzad tried to scramble free.

The second round started out with McMann again taking Kianzad down early, but this time when they scrambled, Kianzad ended up in top position, in half-guard on McMann. The rest of the round was a tense tussle on the ground with Kianzad trying to get into full guard but McMann fending off those attempts, with Kianzad also throwing in a few elbows along the way.

The third round started out as a stand-up battle before McMann went for another takedown; Kianzad was able to block the takedown but she ended up backed up against the cage where the two spent the next couple of minutes exchanging dirty boxing before being separated. The remainder of the round was fairly even with Kianzad looking to strike and McMann looking for the opening to execute another takedown, and McMann was able to take Kianzad down right at the end of the round.

With such a close fight, it wasn’t a surprise to see it go to a split-decision and, on this night, it was Pannie Kianzad who fate smiled on. In her post-fight interview, Kianzad said it was a close fight, but she was confident she’d won, Kianzad then throwing out a challenge to Julia Avila.

When McMann was interviewed about the close fight, she said she felt it could have gone either way, and McMann then surprised everyone by announcing that she was retiring from MMA and moving on to other things.

Result: Pannie 'Banzai' Kianzad beat Sara McMann by split decision (29-28., 29-28 and 28-29)

19IqFml.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgiYuNgMv.jpg

Light Heavyweight: Marcin Prachnio (14-4) vs. Jiri Prochazka (26-4-1)

This was a good striking battle with plenty of kicks and punches getting exchanged, and it would be a kick that was the turning point of the fight. After being dominant in the first round, Prochazka missed a right cross and was left wide open, and this mistake was capitalized on with a powerful right head kick, dropping Prochazka. Prachnio pounced and began raining down punches, but he couldn’t get the finish, giving Prochazka the opening to sweep Prachnio, bust him open with an elbow to the head, and then use top control to take the arm of Prachnio and secure a kimura and force the tap.

Result: Jiri 'Denisa' Prochazka beat Marcin Prachnio by submission due to a kimura in 4:50 of Round 2

WqkHhnN.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgWCFOQdd.jpg

Light Heavyweight: Gadzhimurad Antigulov (20-7) vs. Anthony Smith (32-15)

The preliminary card ended on a high note, with Anthony Smith putting in a great showing against Gadzhimurad Antigulov before ending the fight with a brutal barrage of punches on the ground, late in the first round, one of which knocked Antigulov out.

Result: Anthony 'Lionheart' Smith beat Gadzhimurad 'Highlander' Antigulov by knockout (punch) in 4:18 of Round 1

Main Card

0gDHXfJ.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgvenONjA.jpg

Featherweight: Josh Emmett (15-3) vs. Sodiq Yussuf (12-1)

Sodiq Yusuff mixed up a variety of attacks en route to a comfortable unanimous decision victory. Whether it was standing up, in the clinch, or on the ground, Yusuff was just too dominant for Josh Emmett. Emmet was no slouch, but he never got in the fight and Yusuff’s impressive run of form continues.

Result: 'Super' Sodiq Yusuff beat Josh Emmett (by uanimous decision ()30-27, 30-27 and 30-27

ip9yjPS.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgunnYnsF.jpg

Bantamweight: Raphael Assuncao (28-7) vs. Henry Cejudo (15-4)

Although Cejudo got a great reception coming out as the hometown fighter, that was as hot as the fans were to get, with the fight that followed featuring more smothering than, well, I’m sure there’s a smothering joke to be made but they’re all in bad taste. Cejudo fought a conservative fight, a very safe fight, but also a very dull one. Cejudo won the fight, easily, but it was a victory that saw him gain absolutely nothing.

Result: Henry 'The Messenger' Cejudo beat Raphael Assuncao by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

HXprOeQ.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgcOG2qPN.jpg

Women’s Flyweight: Jessica-Rose Clark (13-5) vs. Ariane Lipski (10-6, 1NC)

This fight was a pure striking battle with Lipski favouring punches, and Clark mixing it up a lot more, using both punches and kicks. Clark especially focused on leg kicks and Lipski was noticeably limping when she came out for the second round.

The limp didn’t seem to affect Lipski’s striking as she continued to come forward, with Clark more than willing to meet her head-on, making this an exciting fight for the fans.

The exciting came to a brutal end late in the third, though, when Lipski’s punching was too precise and a massive right hook felled Clark; Lipski followed up with some brutal punches, delivering some sickening shots that had the referee leaping in to stop the fight. And Mario Yamasaki was the referee, so that tells you how brutal the shots had to be.

Result: 'Violence Queen' Ariane Lipski beat Jessica-Rose 'Jessy Jess' Clark by TKO due to strikes in 3:40 of Round 3

7XicewH.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgGk1geF1.jpg

Women’s Bantamweight: Irene Aldana (13-5) vs. Yana Kunitskaya (15-6)

This fight was great with both fighters coming forward and providing plenty of toe-to-toe action. The momentum really ebbed and flowed, and, at the end of the first round, it seemed like Kunitskaya had perhaps done enough to win the round.

But her hard work was undone in the space of just a few seconds with Aldana scoring with a wicked right uppercut that dropped Kunitskaya; Aldana jumped at her chance to get the finish, which, after some blistering ground-and-pound, she duly obtained.

Result: Irene 'Robles' Aldana beat Yana 'Foxy' Kunitskaya by TKO due to strikes in 2:51 of Round 2

aH2LpRI.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgOlxZBs2.jpg

Lightweight: Michael Johnson (20-15) vs. Islam Makhachev (19-1)

The first round was a round of two halves with Makhachev dominating the first half and Johnson dominating the second, in a round that was a total ground battle. Makhachev took Johnson down right away and was controlling him on the ground, even lighting him up when he managed to get behind Johnson. But Johnson scrambled free and ended up on top of Makhachev, with Makhachev turtle up. Now it was Makhachev’s turn to get rocked, with Johnson even landing some knees to the side of the head, and, when the round ended, it was looking like Johnson was edging ahead.

Johnson landed some great punches in the second roun but there was an extended period in the middle of the round when Makhachev had him pressed up against the fence, although you’d think that one still went to Johnson. The third round played out in a similar fashion, so, when the round ended, it all came down to whether you favoured control over damage.

The judges went with the fighter who delivered the most damage, with Johnson not only taking the victory, but getting 30-27 scores from all three judges.

With all the confidence you’d expect, Johnson, in his post-fight interview, said that the next fight he wanted was one with James Vick.

Result: Michael 'The Menace' Johnson beat Islam Makhachev by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

KpDaIX1.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgpi01yoI.jpg

Women’s Strawweight: Claudia Gadelha (18-5) vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk (17-5)

Jędrzejczyk got immediate heat by not touching gloves, and this may have fuelled Gadelha as she enjoyed early success in the first round, pushing the action and forcing Jędrzejczyk into making some uncharacteristic mistakes. Jędrzejczyk was soon back in it, though, and the fight became a lot more even-handed with the combatants trading some stinging strikes. And, late in the round, Jędrzejczyk busted Gadelha open, and then followed up on that by dropping her with a straight right hand. Jędrzejczyk pounced, looking to get the finish, but Gadelha had the wherewithal to hold on and see the round out.

Jędrzejczyk started the second round as she ended the first, dropping Gadelha with a head kick and then moving in for the kill. She landed some big punches but Gadelha’s defensive game was such that she was able to start avoiding those punches. A ground battle ensued with Jędrzejczyk having to avoid Gadelha’s attempts to pull guard; Jędrzejczyk also went on the offensive, trying look on a kimura, but she couldn’t the hold applied and a scramble allowed Gadelha to pull half-guard. Gadelha tried another scramble, this time one to get back standing, but Jędrzejczyk took the opening to get hold of Gadelha and get side-control, and the rest of the round played out as a defensive stalemate.

The third round started out with both fighters being cautious and then, with just over thirty seconds gone, Jędrzejczyk landed a pair of jabs and followed up with a powerful fight hook that dropped Gadelha. Jędrzejczyk jumped at her latest chance to end the fight, unloading some massive right hands and, this time, where was no escape for Gadelha and one punch saw here go limp and the referee jumped in to stop the fight and Joanna Jędrzejczyk had now made it 3-0 against her long-time rival.

Result: Joanna Jędrzejczyk beat Claudia 'Claudinha' Gadelha by knockout (punch) in 1:06 of Round 3

Former heavyweight champions to collide in first UFC event of 2021

Sunday of Week 1 of November 2020

The UFC will kick off 2021 with a major heavyweight fight as they return to ESPN with a heavyweight showdown between two former champions when Daniel Cormier squares up with Junior Dos Santos.

Cormier begins the climb back up the heavyweight ladder after losing to Stipe Miocic in their trilogy fight back in May and, whilst he’ll be eager to return to championship contention, he’ll be facing the heavy hands of the two-time heavyweight champion Dos Santos, who is himself hoping to once again make it to the top of the heavyweight division. For his part, Dos Santos comes into this fight on the back of a two wins, over Anthony Johnson and Ilir Latifi, with his victory over Johnson coming by way of a brutal first-round knockout.

A victory for either man would keep them in title contention, yet it’s Dos Santos with the most to gain as a decisive win could be just enough to secure him a chance at becoming a three-time UFC Heavyweight Champion, a distinction that only one other man, the legendary Randy Couture, can lay claim to.

Who will win this classic battle of wrestler vs. striker?

Similarly, the co-main event could see the women’s strawweight division find a new top contender when it too sees former champions face off, as Carla Esparza battles Rose Namajunas. Esparza has long wanted the opportunity to regain a title that she was the first person to ever hold, and a win over Namajunas could put her in a position to achieve that goal. Yet Namajunas is herself wanting to regain the strawweight title and, after falling short in her title fight in July, she knows that a loss here could see her title hopes sidelined for quite some time, so a win her is vital to maintaining her championship aspirations.

Uriah Hall has the task of welcoming Rafael Carvalho the UFC, with Carvalho making the jump to the biggest stage of them all and looking to prove that he ranks among the best in the middleweight division. Hall, who has struggled to maintain consistent form throughout his career, will need to be at his best if he is to turn back Carvalho and show that it is he who should be ranked among the middleweight’s best.

In the flyweight division, Kai Kara-France must put the disappointment of falling short in his attempt to fill the flyweight title vacancy behind him when he faces Eric Shelton. Shelton is coming off a great victory in his first fight back in the UFC, and a win over Kara-France would firmly establish him in the flyweight division and put him one more rung up the ladder.

The much-heralded Muay-Thai fighter Riley Spooner makes her UFC debut with the dangerous striker taking on the well-rounded Gabriel Holloway. Spooner is undefeated, but Holloway will be hoping to spoil both the undefeated record and UFC debut of the very outspoken Riley Spooner.

And the main card begins with another UFC debut as veteran Julia Budd finally steps foot inside the Octagon, and she’ll be going up against the former title challenger Felicia Spencer.

This great card, as well as a stacked preliminary card that is headlined by the return to action of Edson Barboza, with Barboza taking on Jeremy Stephens, will hit the Octagon when the UFC comes to Washington on Saturday of Week 1 of January.

From the author: This was a real kick in the teeth because I’m big fan of Dariush and, after his win over Pettis, he was either getting a lightweight title shot or one more win away from getting a lightweight title shot. He was also in line to replace Ferguson or McGregor if either of them is forced out of UFC 257.

Edgar and Magomedsharipov to headline UFC Fight Night 184

Edgar and Magomedsharipov to headline UFC Fight Night 184

Sunday of Week 2 of November 2020

The UFC goes to Idaho for a Fight Night that will be headlined by a pivotal fight in the featherweight division as former champion and future of Hall of Famer Frankie Edgar takes on Zabit Magomedsharipov.

Frankie Edgar is coming off a controversial fight against Alexander Volkonovksi at UFC 254, one that he lost on the night, but where the result was turned into a no-contest when Volkonovski failed a post-fight drug test for PEDs. It puts Edgar back in a viable position to make his way back up the featherweight ladder and a win over Zabit Magomedsharipov, a rising star in the featherweight division, would prove once and for all that Frankie still has what it takes to take on the best.

But Zabit Magomedsharipov is a rising star for a reason and, despite a quick loss to Max Holloway at UFC 249, he was soon back on the winning trail with a dominating win over Brian Ortega, and a win over a legend like Frankie Edgar would be enough to put a fighter like Magomedsharipov within reach of a title shot and possibly give him a chance to avenge his stunning loss to Holloway.

In another great featherweight fight, Charles Oliveira takes on Dustin Poirier. Oliveira, like Frankie Edgar, is coming off a loss that turned into a no-contest due to his opponent failing a drug test; he’ll be coming into this fight with victory in mind, and a win over Poirier would put Oliveira back on track to resume his rapid rise towards the featherweight title.

For Dustin Poirier, a perennial member of the top ten, a win over a fighter like Charles Oliveira would cement his status as a genuine contender and possibly put him just one keystone win away from a title shot.

The women’s flyweight division will have two of its best in action when Katlyn Chookagian battles Montana de la Rosa, and it’ll be de la Rosa, who has won her last two fights, who’ll feel she has the most on the line because if she can beat a fighter like Chookagian, de la Rosa could be in line for a title shot. Katlyn Chookagian will be looking to spoil those hopes and put herself in the mix for a title shot.

Over in the women’s strawweight division, Livia Renata Souza tangles with Tecia Torres, in the light heavyweight division, Misha Cirkunov faces Ion Cutelaba, and the main card opens with a lightweight clash as Renato Carnerio finds himself being tested by the veteran Clay Guida.

This great night of action hits Idaho on Saturday of Week 2 of January 2021.

This fight wasn’t the best way to start the night off because it was rather poor. Outside of a moment early in the second round when Rosa caught Alpar with a beautiful kick to the head that rocked Alpar; Rosa couldn’t get the finish. Most of the fight saw Alpar keeping Rosa pressed up against the fence or otherwise clinched up with her, with the two women exchanging short punches. It went the distance and Alapr won by split decision.

Lightweight: Chris Gruetzemacher (14-3) vs. Magomed Mustafaev (14-3)

The first round was hard fought and it mixed striking and grappling. Both fighters landed some heavy blows and, heading into the second round, it felt like a fight that could go either way. The second round followed a similar pattern but as the round went on, Gruetzemacher was noticeably slowing down, and, just past the half-way mark, Mustafaev landed a powerful right hook that dropped Gruetzemacher, with the requisite ground-and-pound getting Mustafaev the TKO victory.

Max Griffin came in as the underdog but he also came into the cage looking a lot bigger, and he put that size to devastating use as he dropped Santos in ten seconds and then pounded away on him to get the finish in just 36 seconds.

Middleweight: Marcelo Guimaraes (9-2-1) vs. Makhmud Muradov (24-6)

Muradov opened up the first round with a beautiful right uppercut that dropped Magrao; Muradov tried to finish Magrao off, but, in his haste, he gave Magrao the opening to break free from side-control; Magrao scrambled his way into ending up on top of Muradov, who had to pull Magrao into half-guard. Muradov was on the defensive for the rest of the round, and he was able to keep Magrao from delivering any significant damage.

Magrao went for a takedown early in the second round but the best he could do was push Muradov back up against the cage, so Magrao used this position to grind Muradov against the cage and wear him down. Eventually, Magrao did get Muradov down, although it was only in a seated position, but this gave him the chance to work for a guillotine choke though he couldn’t get the hold applied.

Magrao was soon going for takedown in the third round, and again he had to settle for pressing Muradov back up against the cage. This time, however, he was eventually able to take Muradov down, with a leg sweep, and, in the process, Magrao took the back of Magrao; in swift order, Magrao was able to get both hooks in, secure a rear naked choke, and force the tap.

Trizano gave Quarantillo a lot of trouble in the first round, going for takedowns early and then maintain a striking attack thereafter, with Trizano even busting Quarantillo open above the eye, the result of a well-place punch. Later on, in the round the cut was checked, but the fight was allowed to keep going. Quarantillo went for a takedown of his own when the fight resumed, and Trizano was ready for it as he caught Quarantillo in a guillotine off the takedown, but the round ended before he could force the tap.

Not dissuaded by how the first round ended, Quarantillo was soon angling for another takedown of Trizano in the second round, but this left him open to the counterstriking of Trizano, who landed a fast right head kick that had Quarantillo on unsteady legs. A second head kick dropped Quarantillo; Trizano went for the finish, and, as Quarantillo tried to avoid getting struck, Trizano swiftly grabbed the arm of Quarantillo and cranked down with a kimura to get the tap.

This fight was a competitive striking battle, but once it hit the ground, Lahdemaki’s experience in the ground game was to prove decisive and an arm triangle secured her the victory.

Alexandra Albu was the favourite going into this fight, but her performance suggested that the oddsmakers got this one seriously wrong. Most of the first round saw her pressing Kassem against the fence, with Kassem getting in some strikes here and there, but it would be early in the second round that Kassem landed the most important strikes of all, dropping Albu almost right away with a vicious right cross, and then hammering Albu with punches that gave the referee no option but to jump in and stop the fight.

In this battle of the hard hitting heavyweights, ‘Rumble’ finally got the explosive finish that fans had been waiting for ever since he returned to the UFC; with de Lima on rubbery legs late in the first round, Johnson knocked him out cold with brutal right uppercut that went through de Lima’s guard like a hot knife through butter.

Although Matt Brown had his moments, which were the only really exciting moments of the fight, most of this contest saw Luque control Brown in the clinch and smothering him against the cage. With just over a minute to go in the round, the referee ordered a separation; Jandiroba tried to take Hill back down, but Hill reversed things and took Jandiroba down, with Jandiroba left turtled up on her hands and knees, fending off punches for the remainder of the round.

It went to the judges and, while Hill getting the unanimous decision wasn’t a bad call, two of the judges gave Hill the second round, which was completely inexcusable. In any event, Hill was happy with the outcome, and she had no hesitation in naming Cortney Casey as her next desired opponent.

The first round was dominated by Oezdemir, who used his wrestling to keep Santos pinned up against the cage, where he worked him other with dirty boxing, while using his wrestling to neutralise Santos’ efforts to use dirty boxing of his own. The second round was mostly a striking battle with Oezdemir making good use of legs kicks on his opponent, and was Santos starting to limp a little late in the round. Santos tried to use his own wrestling to take Oezdemir down but ended up getting taken down with a great looking sweep.

There was a buzz in the air from the fans, with the returning Alexander Gustafsson taking on a legend of the sport who had been experiencing a career resurgence in recent times, having gone unbeaten in his last four fights, drawing one of them and winning the other three in decisive fashion.

Preliminary Card

kPxAxJh.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgmUaX1AI.jpg

Women’s Flyweight: Viviane Araujo (8-3) vs. Wu Yanan (10-4)

The night got off to an explosive start with Wu Yanan delivering a devastating first-round finish, dropping Araujo with a fantastic right cross and then pounding her out with a series of blistering right hands.

Result: Wu Yanan beat Viviane 'Vivi' Araujo by TKO due to strikes in 3:05 of Round 1

t70Fpl8.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgo6FOD01.jpg

Women’s Bantamweight: Veronica Macedo (6-4-1) vs. Ketlen Viera (10-2)

Vieira had a size advantage in this fight, which she put to good use, using lots of clinching against the fence as well as clinch work in general to control Macedo and dominate the fight. There was some good action, albeit almost entirely one-sided, and, when the fight went the distance, the outcome was quite obvious.

Although her post-fight interview was the standard stuff, everything about Katlen Viera exudes ‘star power’.

Result: Ketlen 'Fenomeno' Vieira beat Veronica Macedo by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

4yiXlAa.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgDDXHsXm.jpg

Lightweight*: David Teymur (8-2) vs. Khama Worthy (15-6)

Worthy, who came in massively over the weight limit, dominated the first two rounds, controlling Teymur with grappling, keeping him pressed up against cage in either a standing or sitting position, or smothered on the ground. The third round followed the same pattern and Worthy was looking worthy of the upset victory, but one slip was to prove costly; Worthy was in the half-guard of Teymur and, when he tried to secure side-control, it let Teymur scramble his way free. Teymur ended up with a hold of Worthy, who was kneeling, and Teymur managed to sink in a rear naked choke and a weary Worthy was forced to tap out.

Result: David Teymur beat Khama 'The Deathstar' Worthy by submission due to a raer naked choke in 4:53 of Round 3

wPzQrR2.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgkawQpeW.jpg

Welterweight: Claudio Henrique de Silva (14-1) vs. Michael Pereria (24-11, 2NC)

Pereira dominated the first two rounds with a pressing attack that was filled with a lot of striking and a little grappling. The third round saw Pereira follow that same strategy, and, like in the previous, fight, the dominant fighter seemed to be well on their way to victory. But, also like in the previous fight, a small mistake would prove costly; de Silva hit a quick takedown and, despite his best efforts, Pereira couldn’t get back to his feet. de Silva swiftly took the mount, and, after a little more work, managed to lock in an armbar and get the submission.

Result: Claudio 'Mineiro' Henrique da Silva beat Michel 'Demolidor' Pereira by submission due to an armbar in 3:33 of Round 3

mJFWIWG.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg7PW402Z.jpg

Heavyweight: Tanner Bosser (17-7-1) vs. Salimgirey Rasulov (19-7)

Rasulov was the favourite going into this fight but he was also going into the fight at a big weight disadvantage, and, for the first round, the bigger Boser was able to physically dominate his smaller opponent. But the superior grappling, and superior stamina of Rasulov enabled him to take control of the fight in the second round and dominate from thereon out.

Result: Salimgirey 'Tank' Rasulov beat 'The Bulldozer' Tanner Boser by unanimous decision (29-27, 29-28 and 29-27)

MEBOIqz.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgqSWGFjB.jpg

Featherweight: Kevin Aguilar (17-3) vs. Ryan Hall (9-1)

Although Hall is noted for his dangerous ground game, he had no chance to employ it in the first two rounds as the precise striking of Aguilar meant that Hall was kept at bay, and even rocked, and then dropped a couple of times. In the third round, Hall finally got a hold of Aguilar and took him down, but Aguilar showed excellent defence as he managed to defend against numerous submission attempts and, try as he might, Hall just could not get the submission he needed, and, when the fight was over and went to the judges, Aguilar was given the unanimous decision victory.

Aguilar gave a good post-fight interview; the guy can talk. And he used his mic time to challenge Sodiq Yosuff.

Result: Kevin 'The Angel of Death' Aguilar beat Ryan Hall by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 and 29-28)

iVD3u89.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpg59JDi3P.jpg

Middleweight: Derek Brunson (20-8) vs. Andrew Sanchez (11-6)

Result: Derek Brunson beat Andrew 'El Dirte' Sanchez by TKO due to strikes in 4:00 of Round 2

Main Card

w3NDAJa.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgbja65vg.jpg

Bantamweight: Casey Kenny (15-2-1) vs. Petr Yan (15-2)

If Petr Yan was feeling any stress from coming in as a late replacement, he didn’t show it in the main card opener. Yan landed a number of crunching leg kicks, the impact of which you could almost feel all the way back in the nosebleed section. But it was punch, a brutal body punch, that led to the finish, as Yan dropped Kenney with vicious right hand to the body, and Yan unloaded on Kenney until the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

Result: Petr 'No Mercy' Yan beat Casey Kenney by TKO due to strikes in 2:59 of Round 1

iMymWE3.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgo0yg6wt.jpg

Welterweight: Colby Covington (15-3) vs. Jorge Masvidal (35-14)

The crowd were loud for Covington, who was the home favourite, but that was as loud as the crowd would get for this fight because, like a lot of grudge fights, this one failed to excite because nobody was taking any chances. Apart from a couple of minutes in the second round when there was a decent exchange of striking, the entire fight was Covington clinching with Masvidal and keeping him pressed up against the cage with Covington doing just enough to avoid the referee ordering too many separations.

If you were expecting fireworks, you got a damp squib instead and, such was the banality, that one judge actually gave a 10-10 round because so little happened, and 10-10 rounds are exceedingly rare.

Covington won, by majority decision, but, really, nobody won, and, in fact, we, the fans, lost.

Despite his less than enthralling performance, Covington was still very mouthy in his post-fight interview, demanding a fight with Leon Edwards, with Covington guaranteeing that he would be victorious over Edwards in less than five minutes.

Result: Colby 'Chaos' Covington beat Jorge 'GameBred' Masvidal by majority decision (29-28, 30-27 and 29-29)

mtVOvlQ.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgwf4l4JC.jpg

Middleweight: Jarod Cannonier (13-4) vs. Ian Heinsch (14-3)

Jarod Cannonier was making his return to action after a lengthy layoff due to injury and the early returns weren’t too promising; although Cannonier was landing some good shots, the striking of Heinsch was just that bit better and Heinsch seemed to win the first round quite comfortably. Cannonier came on stronger in the second round, but so did Heinsch, who was in no mood to back down. At the half-way mark of the second round, Heinsch took Cannonier down and dominated him for the rest of round; Heinsch delivered a number of knees from side-control, and it was not looking good for Cannonier, whose corner was getting him really fired up between rounds.

And it was all for naught because Heinsch landed a superb head kick almost immediately in the third round, Cannonier unable to stay standing, despite his best efforts, Heinsch then battering Cannonier with some heavy shots and the referee didn’t wait too long before pulling Heinsch away and calling the fight off.

Result: Ian 'The Hurricane' Heinisch beat Jared 'The Killa Gorilla' Cannonier by TKO due to strikes in 0:35 of Round 3

lUqQHZk.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpgXYjRhyg.jpg

Welterweight: Carlos Condit (31-13) vs. Lorenz Larkin (24-7, 1NC)

Lorenz Larkin got a big reaction from his home crowd, and Larkin, who was making his big return to the UFC, was hoping to reward the fans for that support and make his UFC return a successful one.

The first round did not bode well for Larkin that regard as Condit timed his head movement and counter-strikes to perfection, with ‘The Natural Born Killer’ able to avoid a lot of Larkin’s strikes whilst then landing a punch or kick of his own. Larkin did have some success in the stand-up, but, for the most part, the first round was a decisive one for Condit.

It didn’t get any better for Larkin in the second round as Condit had him rocked early when he countered a right hook with a nice high roundhouse kick. Larkin was in trouble; Condit followed up with a right uppercut, but the blow didn’t fully land. Condit locked up a Muay-Thai clinch, but Larkin wrested free and it was perhaps looking like Condit was slowing down just a little. The fight continued at a decent pace, and while Larkin was also slowing down, he didn’t take any serious damage, although he was clearly down two rounds heading into a crucial third and final round.

Early in the third round it became clear that Condit’s slowing down in the second round was a stamina issue, that Condit wasn’t pacing himself. Condit was, however, able to clinch up and force Larkin back up against the cage, but Larkin, who was tiring as well, still had enough about him to create some space and break free.

Condit was looking ragged as Larkin, who needed a finish, came forward. Yet, despite his obvious tiredness, Condit still had something left, and a vicious right cross landed on the counter floored Larkin. Condit jumped at his chance to get the finish, but Larkin was able to hang on and see the round out, but it was a very hollow moral victory, because there was no doubt what the result of the fight was going to be.

And, to no shock, although the fans still booed a little, Carlos Condit was declared the winner by unanimous decision.

Condit’s post-fight interview saw him challenge, somewhat unexpectedly, Court McGhee.

Result: 'The Natural Born Killer' Carlos Condit beat Lorenz 'The Monsoon' Larkin by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27 and 30-27)

mYyFJSS.jpgjd3Ws5b.jpghkV6NC1.jpg

Welterweight: Nick Diaz (27-9, 2 NC) vs. Geoff Neal (14-2)

In front of his home crowd, Nick Diaz got a huge ovation from the fans, and this gave the fight a great atmosphere. This didn’t get to Geoff Neal, however. But what did get to Neal, about ninety seconds in, was a jab-left hand combination that had Neal backing off and instinctively covering up. Diaz went for the finish, but Neal still had enough about him to stay out of range, and he seemed to be able to have cleared his head.

Neal began firing back with leg kicks, but one of them landed low, which caused the fight to be paused so that Diaz could be given some time to recover. Once the fight resumed, Diaz was back to coming forward and pressing the attack, and Neal was once more on the defensive.

The two fighters exchanged punches and Diaz was continuing to dominate and was easily winning the round. Then, with just under thirty seconds to go, Diaz landed a fantastic right cross that dropped Neal. With his opponent down, Diaz began unloading a series of piston-like punches on Neal, who was taking a beating, and with Neal offering almost nothing in the way of defence, the referee pulled Diaz away and the fans erupted as the crowd favourite had delivered the popular finish.

The normally rambunctious Diaz was very complementary towards his defeated opponent, with Diaz praising Neal for being a tough opponent who can take a good punch.

Result: Nick Diaz beat Geoff 'Handz of Steel' Neal by TKO due to strikes in 4:54 of Round 1

UFC Welterweight Champion: Kamaru Usman © (17-1) vs. Nate Diaz (21-12) for the UFC Welterweight Championship

The atmosphere for the main event was great, with Diaz, the home favourite, getting, like his brother had in the previous fight, a huge ovation from the fans, all of whom were dying to see their guy upset the odds and become the new UFC Welterweight Champion.

The enthusiasm of the fans was soon dampened when Usman took Diaz down early in the first round, the champion taking the challenger down with a powerful Greco-Roman slam. Diaz was trying to manoeuvre Usman into the guard but Usman having none of that, and the champion was content to land short punches, none of them delivering anything in the way of damage, but they were enough to keep from being stood up, at least until the round was almost over. There was only enough time left for Usman to clinch up with Diaz again, and the round ended with the fans hoping for both a better showing by their favourite, and for some action to get excited by.

Right away in the second round, Usman was moving in close, looming for another clinch, and the champion achieved this without taking any significant damage. The world class wrestling quickly grabbed double underhooks, Usman using them to control Diaz, and then work for a trip, which Usman duly achieved. The champion ended up in side-control, which put Diaz on the defensive. As with the first round, Diaz tried to manoeuvre Usman into the guard, but, also as with the first round, Usman blocked these efforts. The action slowed enough for the referee to order a stand-up, but Usman was swift to retake control of the fight, clinching up with Diaz, backing him up against the cage and smothering him there for the rest of the round.

Diaz came out with some needed aggression in the third round, but it was to no avail as he soon found himself once more getting clinched with and then pushed back up against the cage. Usman kept Diaz up against the cage, grinding him against the harsh steel of the octagon, slowly wearing down the challenger to his title, all the while engaging in some dirty boxing. After a stalemate ensued, the referee ordered a separation with about a minute to go in the round; Usman, not content to coast, came in for a takedown attempt, but, as he shoot in, Usman found his neck getting snatched up into a guillotine choke; for a moment, the fans roared, finally brought to life by some serious excitement. But the fans enthusiasm was immediately dampened when Usman pulled free off Diaz’s grip, and the remaining seconds of the round saw Usman smother Diaz on the mat.

In between rounds, it was clear that the fans were not enamoured with what they were seeing; not only was their favourite getting dominated, but the domination wasn’t even exciting to watch, the main event of the evening definitely being a fight for the purist.

Diaz opened up the fourth round with a sharp body shot, but it was off-target; Usman quickly shot in for another takedown. Like in the previous round, Usman’s neck was ripe to be grabbed, which Diaz swiftly did, Diaz securing a tight guillotine choke. Usman struggled to break free, but, unlike in the previous round, Usman could find no escape from the grip of Diaz’s choke and, seemingly out of nowhere, going totally against the grain given how the fight had been unfolding, Usman was tapping out and the fans burst into life, going absolutely crazy as the home favourite, who was being thoroughly dominated, had delivered a submission out of nowhere to hand Kamaru Usman his first loss in the UFC, and, with it, claim the UFC Welterweight Championship!

Result: Nate Diaz beat 'The Nigerian Nightmare' Kamaru Usman by submission due to a guillotine choke in 1:14 of Round 4 to win the UFC Welterweight Championship

UFC go overseas for first PPV of 2021; Darren Till to challenge Israel Adesanya for UFC Middleweight Championship

Saturday of Week 4 of November 2020

The UFC’s first major event of 2021 sees them travel to the UK, to the North of England, as UFC 258, Merseyside Mayhem, will see home favourite Darren Till challenging Israel Adesanya for the UFC Middleweight Championship.

Israel Adesanya has been a dominant champion and a dominant fighter in the UFC; undefeated, Adesanya captured the interim middleweight crown in a Fight of the Year candidate against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 236 before claiming the official middleweight title with a TKO win over Robert Whittaker at UFC 243. After a lacklustre win over Yoel Romero, Adesanya made up for that with a sensational and stunning 38-second one-sided destruction of the then-undefeated Paulo Costa at UFC 252.

Adesanya looks to build on that momentum with another successful title defence, but to do that he must travel to hostile territory and take on the UK’s best middleweight, Darren Till, in Till’s backyard.

Darren Till is the UK’s best middleweight and the top contender to the middleweight crown. Till achieved that distinction with successive wins over Derek Brunson and Yoel Romero, with Till’s win over Romero not only being a better fight than Adesanya’s but also more decisive, with Till having put in a lot more effort than Adesanya, the champion seemingly content to do the bare minimum when facing Romero.

Till has done more than enough to earn his shot at the undefeated Adesanya but Till must be at his absolute best and put in the performance of his life if he hopes to achieve his dream and become UFC Middleweight Championship.

In the co-main event, fellow countryperson Molly McCann must also be at her absolute best as McCann faces the daunting task of wresting the UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship from perhaps the best all-round female fighter in the world, Valentina Shevchenko.

Since claiming flyweight gold, Shevchenko has looked nothing short of incredible with devastating, sometimes destructive wins over Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche, Katlyn Chookagian and Joanne Calderwood. Shevchenko has seemed to be a class above all of her challengers and the results have borne that out. Next in the firing line is a challenger with proven firepower and some devastating finishes of her own to bring to the table. But that challenger is tasked with doing what nobody else has come close to doing and that’s finding a way to defeat a champion who appears to be set for a long reign as divisional queen.

Molly McCann had quite the 2020 with first round wins over Ashlee Evans-Smith and Jennifer Maia, the win over Maia being especially noteworthy as McCann knocked the durable Maia out cold in just 55-seconds. It was a win that not only put McCann on a five fight winning streak but also in position to challenge for flyweight gold and, with it, become the first female UFC champion from the UK. Such a victory would make history, but to do that McCann must overcome what seems to be an insurmountable obstacle, a champion who appears to have no equal.

In a welterweight encounter, British fighter Leon Edwards takes on the dangerous Dong Hyun Kim. Edwards’ last fight saw him knock out James Krause, whilst Kim enters 2021 off of knockout wins over Rafael Dos Anjos and Alexey Kunchenko. Edwards will be the fan favourite but he must be careful or he could fall victim to a devastating knockout artist and find himself on the wrong end of a highlight reel finish.

In the women’s flyweight division, Joanne Calderwood tries to bounce back from her unsuccessful challenge of Valentina Shevchenko when she faces Paige VanZant. VanZant might be known for her looks, but Calderwood can’t take her opponent too lightly or it’ll be VanZant who walks away the winner.

Former middleweight champions collide when Chris Weidman takes on Robert Whittaker. For both men, a win here is imperative in maintaining their title hopes, and a decisive victory for either Weidman or Whittaker could put them in line for a shot at whoever emerges from the main event as UFC Middleweight Champion.

And the main card opener is a flyweight fight as Aleksander Doskalchuk meets Joseph Morales.

All this action and great undercard will take place on Saturday, Week 4 of January 2021 in the North of England.

UFC signs deal with HBO; ‘UFC’s Fight Night on HBO’ to begin early next year

UFC signs deal with HBO; ‘UFC’s Fight Night on HBO’ to begin early next year

Saturday of Week 1 of December 2020

The UFC today announced a deal that would see live specials broadcast on HBO, with the first special to take place in February next year. Full details of the deal were not disclosed but it is understood that it calls for between two and four shows per year on HBO. The main event of the first ‘UFC’s Fight Night on HBO’ is one of the biggest non-title fights that the UFC could put on, and it will be a rematch between Ben Askren and Robbie Lawler.

The main event is a highly anticipated rematch, and it’s one that fans hope will have a more decisive outcome than the first fight between Askren and Lawler. That first fight, which was Askren’s UFC debut, took place at UFC 235 in March of last year. It ended in highly controversial fashion with the referee stopping the fight when Lawler appeared to have rendered unconscious by a bulldog choke; Lawler, upon the fight being stopped, immediately protested, claiming that he was not unconscious at all. Although Lawler was, quite clearly, very conscious, replays did appear to show that his arm went momentarily limp whilst being held in the choke.

The decision, as controversial as it was, stood, and Askren remained the winner.

Since that fight, there have been calls for a rematch and now the ‘Ruthless’ one will have his chance to right what is, in his mind, an egregious wrong. For Askren, it’s his chance to prove without a shadow of a doubt that he can beat Lawler and, in the process, stake his claim to being one of the top welterweights in the world today.

In the co-main event, former featherweight champion Jose Aldo will take on former bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw. For Dillashaw, it’s his first step towards redemption, with this fight being his first since completing a lengthy suspension for failing a drug test. Dillashaw will undoubtedly be under a lot of pressure in this fight, but the former champion is used to being under pressure, being under the spotlight, even if this is a spotlight unlike any other that he’s known. But he is facing a former champion who is widely regarded as one of the best the sport as ever seen; Aldo is hoping to make a statement and move up the bantamweight ladder, and a win over Dillashaw would make quite the statement indeed.

Irene Aldana will face Pannie Kianzad in a battle of rising stars in the women’s bantamweight division. In the women’s strawweight division, former champion Jessica Andrade continues her attempts to climb back up the ladder when she faces the always exciting Michelle Waterson. And the opening fight of the main card should be a cracker as it will see Dominick Reyes take on Sam Alvey.

It’s a great main card, supported by a loaded preliminary card that includes the UFC debut of Olga Rubin. All this action takes place on Saturday of Week 1 of February 2021 in Colorado.
