TITANS Need Not Apply: A 1991 WCW Diary

Recommended Posts

Gigante is irrelevant imo, unless you have a thing for him. No hard feelings against the guy, I just prefer other bigger men.

Gigante was definitely an attraction, but I'm not sure what if anything I'll do with him long-term.

Comments: Two of my all-time faves. Would be totally awesome if SID won too.

Sid is in my top 5 of all-time. That may sound silly to some, but he just had "It" in my opinion.

Larry Zbyszko vs. Bobby Eaton

Comments: I hate Larry

LOL, I remember that from my WWF diary.

Looking forward to your Superbrawl card. A lot of matches on this one but I understand that.

Yep. With no world champion 'til June, so therefore no clear main event for the show, and some of my better guys still needing to be built up, I had to go with quantity over quality a bit. Otherwise I would've had to blow all my best matchups on the first PPV.

The Steiner Brothers © vs. Kevin Sullivan & Dan Spivey

Thrown together match is thrown together. Either The Steiner Brothers win because they're The Steiner Brothers or they lose so they can be elevated to face Doom.

This is a perfect example of what I meant above. With no world champion, I really felt I had to get all my titles on the show. And since I was a little light on mid-card tag teams on the heel side, I had to throw Sullivan and Spivey together.

WCW Superbrawl should be a great one. Looking forward to reading it and seeing how my picks do.

Thanks again for your in-depth predictions, angeldelayette!

WCW United States Championship

Lex Luger © vs. Sid Vicious

A bit of a shot in the dark here, but I suspect Lex would provide better matches so he'd be a more ideal champion.

That was definitely something I considered when deciding on a winner in this one.

Big Van Vader vs. Junkyard Dog

If you're gonna build Sting, you gotta build his monster too.

Definitely! Vader's one of my all-time favorites. Shame how little he accomplished in the WWF. Thanks for reading and predicting again, Gorilla!

Havent read any shows yet just the opening post with your stipulations and all i can say is....wow..... i look forward to this!!

Thanks, The_Monk!

Very tough "rules" you've set yourself but should be interesting..... I actually like stipulation 1 as i often do that when playing with e cavet if i do sign anyone they come is a manager (i love making Jake the Snake a leader of a faction and the mouth piece for it)

Man, Jake would have made a great manager!

I possibly wouldnt do you're third stip either as i feel those paths have yet to be written but kudos for you giving it a go :-)

Yeah, I considered leaving it off but ultimately decided it was worth it for the extra challenge. Thanks for reading, The_Monk!

WCW United States Tag Team Championship

The Steiner Brothers © vs. Kevin Sullivan & Dan Spivey

Comments:

no other reason than i really like this pairing and think they could become special

I kinda just threw them together to give the Steiners an opponent for the PPV, but I think there's some potential there too!

"Stunning" Steve Austin w/ Madusa vs. Terry Funk

Comments:

I love funk, but this is the start of big things i feel for Austin.....especially if Larry wins TV gold, eventual face turn for larry and Austin can take out another legend

Good thought on Zbyszko as a future target of Austin!

The York Foundation (Michael Wallstreet, Terry Taylor & Mr. Hughes) w/ Alexandra York vs. The Lightning Express (Brad Armstrong & Tim Horner) & Tommy Rich

Comments:

Best heel faction going currently...let them ride high for a bit

Yeah, I really feel like WCW could've done more with it. Thanks for predicting, The_Monk!

DIARY UPDATE:

Okay, so as is prone to happen with one's hobbies, real life has gotten in the way quite a bit recently and I just didn't have as much time to devote to the diary as I would've liked last week. The good news is, I've had a little more time this week and so Superbrawl will be going up on Friday. I know I said when I started this diary that I wasn't going to bump it just to update if I was running a bit behind "schedule". However, I was way more than a bit behind here, as Friday will be 12 days from the day I posted the predictions card for Superbrawl. I can't guarantee that something like this won't happen again, you know real life and all, but my desired turnaround time between posting the PPV predictions card and the PPV itself is more like 3 to 5 days. So you should mostly expect that going forward.

Bobby Eaton vs. Larry Zbyszko

Anyone wondering whether Bobby Eaton and Larry Zbyszko were actually enemies now or just friends caught up in a misunderstanding, had their question answered early and often in this one, as Zbyszko used every dirty trick in the book against Eaton. Eaton did his best to overcome all of the cheating, resulting in a solid opening match, but Zybszko would grab the victory by grabbing a fistful of Eaton's tights in a rollup at 10:30. Zbyszko advances to face Tom Zenk for the WCW World Television Title later in the night.

Although not quite the unmitigated disaster of Sullivan's first two attempts to find a partner to take down the Steiner Brothers, the third try was definitely not the charm either. Spivey and Sullivan worked well together for first time partners, but not nearly well enough to overcome the experience and brotherly chemistry of the Steiners. With Spivey incapacitated outside following a wicked Steinerline from Scott, Sullivan succumbs to the Steinerizer at just under the 10 minute mark. The Steiner Brothers make defense number five of their WCW United States Tag Team Titles.

Alexandra York had predicted a victory in under three minutes for her guys in this one. That may have sounded a bit on the hopeful side on it's face, but her confidence was shown to be warranted. Not because of the great wrestling ability of Wallstreet and Taylor or the strength of Mr. Hughes though. It was warranted because she had an ace in the hole. Tommy Rich was the unfortunate victim of that ace, blindsided from behind by his own partner, Brad Armstrong! Tim Horner began the match with Mr. Hughes but was quickly flattened, barely managing to drag himself to his corner to tag in Rich. Rich charged at the much larger Hughes, but Armstrong wasn't far behind, driving his shoulder into the back of Rich's knee to put him on the mat. A running splash from Hughes quickly followed, proving York's prediction correct at 2:37.

whRMMqh.jpg

<hr>

As Armstrong celebrated with his new friends, Horner slowly struggled back to his feet in the corner. Seeing this, Armstrong pounced, drilling his now former partner back down to the canvas with a fury of hard right hands. Then, at Armstrong's request, Wallstreet and Taylor would hold Horner down as Hughes delivered multiple running splashes. Finally, Armstrong added the ultimate insult to injury, spitting on his former partner before leaving with his new ones.

Big Van Vader vs. The Junkyard Dog

vWqO8fH.jpgcfJhZ8g.jpgVbw2xvC.jpg

Vader nearly jumps out of his boots as the bell tolls for this one, wasting little time unleashing his fury on Junkyard Dog. Junkyard Dog is a future hall of famer no doubt, but he's surely never been so easily dominated in his entire career. Vader tossed him from pillar to post, nearly prompting Referee Mike Atkin to stop the match on multiple occasions. After a brutal four minutes, that surely seemed like an eternity to Junkyard Dog, Vader mercifully puts him out of his misery with a Vader Bomb.

Ui5FcTQ.jpg

<hr>

Not satisfied with the carnage he'd unleashed on Junkyard Dog in their match, Vader continues his onslaught after it. A second Vader Bomb wasn't enough to satiate him. Neither was a third. A fourth might have been, but luckily for Junkyard Dog, the Renegade Warriors and a handful of jobbers rushed to the ring to save him.

HktU8Sv.jpgCnBwdrZ.jpgaEAU14t.jpgDfpaF8F.jpgB4WFE2v.jpg

They couldn't save themselves though, as Vader handily took out all five men in a matter of 30 or 40 seconds.

Lex Luger © vs. Sid Vicious

oRBtWPx.jpgcfJhZ8g.jpgu2wal4l.jpg

The last time these two men went head to head it was Luger getting the better of Sid in the Danger Zone with Paul E. Dangerously. It was very evident that Sid still had that in mind, as he Pearl Harbored Luger from behind while he adjusted his knee pads before the bell. It paid great dividends too, since it kept Luger on the defensive for the bulk of the match with Sid able to keep him grounded with clubbing forearms, clotheslines and the occasional slam. The champion wasn't gonna go down without a fight of course, reversing an Irish Whip and delivering a back body drop to a thunderous ovation at 8:44. Luger followed that up with two big clotheslines to stumble Sid and then an Irish Whip of his own for a Powerslam on the rebound. It only resulted in a two count, but both Luger and the fans were fired up as he called for the Torture Rack. Sid would connect with a knee to the midsection to reverse the attempt though, and take Luger down into a headlock. Luger reversed that into a headscissors but Sid impressively kips up out of it, and as Luger rushes back to his feet, Sid goes for a big clothesline. Luger ducks it but turns right around into a poke in the eyes. Referee Nick Patrick issues a warning but Sid brushes him off, kicks Luger in the midsection and hits a Powerbomb for the three at 11 minutes and 41 seconds. Sid Vicious wins the WCW United States title.

Steamboat and Pillman worked very well for a team of necessity rather than one of intention, and had little trouble dispatching the Freebirds. Diamond Dallas Page tried to interfere a few times, but was always quickly thwarted by one of Pillman, Steamboat or Referee Randy Anderson, and the end result was Garvin pinned by Steamboat with a Diving Crossbody in 11:09.

Doom w/ Teddy Long © vs. The Young Pistols

If anyone thought the Young Pistols had a chance in this one due to Tracy Smothers' victory over Butch Reed on Saturday Night earlier this month, or due the Young Pistols holding their own in a one-time brawl with Doom, they were sorely mistaken. While not quite a squash match, it was very one-sided for a match with a major title on the line, and Doom easily took it by pinfall after a Diving Shoulder block from Simmons to Steve Armstrong in 9:55. Doom make defense number seven of the WCW World Tag Team titles.

Paul E. Dangerously is in the ring next for a special Superbrawl edition of The Danger Zone, where he's joined by The Four Horsemen.

Dangerously: Ladies and gentlemen, my name is Paul E. Dangerously, and this is The Danger Zone! My guests this evening are none other than THE greatest group of professional wrestlers EVER assembled on the face of this planet! Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome, THE FOUR HORSEMEN!!

The Horsemen make their way to the ring to a mixed reaction, as Ric Flair praises the new United States champion Sid Vicious all the way to the ring.

Dangerously: Welcome, gentlemen! And congratulations to you, Sid, on your championship victory earlier tonight!

Sid nods in approval before Flair takes over the spotlight.

Flair: That's right, Paul! And big Sid's victory is just STEP ONE, in our quest to own EVERY major championship in WCW! Cause these guys right here, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, are THE greatest tag team in wrestling today, and it is just A MATTER OF TIME, until they have the gold, around their waists, to PROVE IT! And that just leaves.......the NATURE BOY!! I have been, SIX TIMES, the heavyweight champion of the world! And I'm here to tell you, that number seven is RIGHT around the corner!

Dangerously tucks the mic under his arm to applaud Flair before continuing.

Dangerously: Now, Nature Boy, I would be remiss if I didn't ask you about your match tonight with the giant that is El Gigante. So tell me, what's your strategy?

Flair: My strategy is simple, Paul. My strategy, is that I AM, THE NATURE BOY, RIC FLAIR, and I AM, the best thing, goin' today!!

Flair ends the segment though, by actually addressing El Gigante.

Flair: But I do have one thing to say to El Gigante. GIGANTE! I'm sure you've heard the old saying, THE BIGGER THEY ARE, THE HARDER THEY FALL! And when you're the Nature Boy Ric Flair, they fall just a little....bit.....harder! I will CHOP YOU DOWN TO SIZE, BIG MAN, and once you fall to the Nature Boy, you're not gettin' back up! WOOOOOOOO!!!

Terry Funk vs. "Stunning" Steve Austin w/ Madusa

JVRsPOc.jpgcfJhZ8g.jpgZVeEoQW.jpgw/YHB4s2A.jpg

Prior to the match, Gary Michael Capetta introduced Terry Funk's brother Dory Jr., who is sitting in the front row at ringside as a special guest of Ted Turner for Superbrawl.

uwkYGUy.jpg

From the onset, it was obvious that Austin's youthful cockiness going into this one was unwarranted, as the near 20 year age difference between these two was practically unrecognizable. Funk never missed a beat, matching his much younger opponent move for move, and going a long way to show Austin why he's considered a legend in the first place. But Austin showed something to. He showed why he's considered one of the hottest prospects in wrestling, defeating Funk cleanly by pinfall with a Stun Gun at 9:57.

iVb604f.jpg

<hr>

Not satisfied with simply beating Funk, Austin made his way ringside, grabbed a steel chair and leveled a recovering Funk with a wicked shot to the head. He was about to take another shot at him too, but luckily Dory hopped the rail at ringside and Austin retreated. Or so Dory thought. Almost the instant Dory turned his back to check on his brother, Austin slid back in the ring and drilled him in the spine with the chair, prompting vigorous applause from Madusa and roaring disapproval from the crowd.

"Nature Boy" Ric Flair vs. El Gigante

CIBDAdH.jpgcfJhZ8g.jpgzoujzW0.jpg

El Gigante's not much of a wrestler, as anyone with eyesight could tell you. However, it's been said that Ric Flair could have a decent match with a broomstick, and that saying was put to the test here. This match was just constant shenanigans with Sid, Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard all at ringside.

u2wal4l.jpgJSSA1cL.jpg

But even if it hadn't been, Gigante would've had very little chance against Flair. That was evident, as Flair ran circles around Gigante, dodging most of his lumbering strikes while striking quickly with chops of his own. It was evident, as Flair never failed to duck out of the ring at the perfect moment, any time Gigante had managed even a tiny bit of momentum. And it was evident, as Flair always managed to go exactly to, but never past, the limit of what Referee Nick Patrick would allow. But Flair didn't become World Champion six times by taking chances, which is why he had Tully Blanchard and Sid distract Patrick so Arn Anderson could hit Gigante in the leg with a pipe. A Figure Four from Flair followed, sealing the submission victory at 8:46.

ShSfql1.jpg

<hr>

As soon as the bell rang, Sid, Anderson and Blanchard joined Flair in the ring as they assaulted Gigante with the pipe Anderson had used to help Flair win the match. Another shot to the leg by Blanchard then preceded another Figure Four by Flair. Gigante was in obvious agony and who knows how long it would have went on had Sting and Lex Luger not charged the ring.

N6IN5ol.jpgoRBtWPx.jpg

Even though they had the numbers advantage, the Horsemen wasted little time in bailing out of the ring before Sting and Luger could get there.

Not much to say about this one, as despite attempted interference on Mantel's behalf by Black Bart,

Rhodes had little trouble coasting to victory with a Running Bulldog at 8:12.

Ricky Morton & Jeff Jarrett vs. Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard

UfjW8rq.jpgAL6j4IC.jpgcfJhZ8g.jpgJSSA1cL.jpg

After an early-match rush of offense by Morton and Jarrett, things quickly settled down in the Horsemen's favor. Anderson and Blanchard showed no signs of rust as a team, making it their mission to isolate the less experienced Jeff Jarrett. It mostly worked, but Jarrett definitely showed some potential for future success and never looked out of place with the three veteran workers in the ring with him. The story of the match though, was Ricky Morton and his attempts to get revenge on Blanchard for turning on him on the debut episode of Saturday Night earlier in the month. However, those attempts were mostly thwarted by the often underhanded but always intelligent tactics of the Horsemen, delaying that inevitable confrontation until after the 13 minute mark. Morton got a lot of offense in on Blanchard in a short amount of time at that point, and it looked like he might ride that wave of momentum to victory. But Blanchard had other ideas, snatching a pinfall victory from the jaws of defeat with a foreign object he pulled out of his trunks at 15:38.

For our final interview segment of the night, Missy Hyatt interviews Sting about his main event match with Stan Hansen, and asks his thoughts on the Horsemen and their attempts to end El Gigante's career earlier in the night.

Sting: I've just got one thing to say to Stan Hansen, Missy. HANSEN, don't think I've forgotten about what happened a couple weeks ago on Saturday Night. DON'T THINK, that I've forgotten, how you tried to help Flair, take out El Gigante that night. Because I remember. I REMEMBER, Stan Hansen, and I'm holding YOU, personally responsible for what happened here tonight even though you weren't involved. Because the Stinger NEVER FORGETS, who did him wrong. And he certainly, NEVER FORGETS, who does his friends wrong. Hansen, you will pay!

Hyatt: And what about the Horsemen?

Sting: Well, Missy, as far as the Horsemen are concerned, I'm gonna do ALL of my talkin' WITH MY FISTS! OOOOOOOWWW!!!!

"Z-Man" Tom Zenk © vs. Larry Zbyszko

nvQnfSj.jpgcfJhZ8g.jpgNvbkCvJ.jpg

With Zbyszko having already wrestled Bobby Eaton earlier in the show, you'd have figured that this match was Zenk's to lose. Zbyszko isn't nicknamed "The Living Legend" for nothing though, so Zenks' perceived advantage never really came into play. Zbyszko looked well rested, both mentally and physically, easily outsmarting both Referee Mark Curtis and Zenk while frequently cheating his way to an advantage. Apparently Bobby Eaton had seen enough of Zbyszko's cheating for one night though, rushing down to the ring late in the match when he saw Zbyszko taking a turnbuckle pad off behind Curtis' and Zenk's back. Unfortunately, Eaton's run-in only served as a distraction to Curtis, who forced him to the back thinking he might help Zenk given what happened earlier. Eaton's ejection and shouting match with Curtis then temporarily distracted Zenk, allowing Zbyszko to attack and ram him head first into the exposed turnbuckle. Zbyszko followed it up with a Piledriver for good measure, winning the WCW World Television title by pinfall at 10:20.

Sting vs. Stan Hansen

N6IN5ol.jpgcfJhZ8g.jpgI4Dn4fY.jpg

Just like Sid had done to Sting's friend Lex Luger earlier in the night, Hansen attacks Sting before the bell, knocking him off the apron to the floor with a knee as he enters the ring. He follows Sting to the outside and rams him into the steel barricade, then the ring steps, before finally tossing him under the bottom rope as Referee Nick Patrick called for the opening bell. Hansen was dripping ambeer all over the mat as he relentlessly pounded on Sting, showing no regard for any of Patrick's warnings to break. When he finally did slow down a bit to catch his breath a couple minutes in, Sting made him pay by raking his eyes to get back on his feet. Now Sting isn't known as a brawler, but drastic times call for drastic measures, and the Stinger had no choice but to get down and dirty if he wanted any chance of getting out of this one in one piece. So down and dirty he got, and what resulted was a fairly entertaining brawl where Sting looked a little more comfortable than one might have expected in such a match. But having gotten involved in the Horsemen's business earlier in the night, Sting unfortunately had more to worry about than just Hansen. As the hard-hitting match passed it's twelfth minute, Ric Flair made his way to ringside.

CIBDAdH.jpg

Now this obviously attracted Sting's attention. But much to Flair's frustration, it actually seemed to energize the Stinger to know Flair was there, as every time he laid into Hansen he would look to Flair and smirk. Smirk as if to say "you're next!" This really got under Flair's skin after a few minutes, so he made his move, jumping into the ring and blatantly attacking Sting in front of Referee Nick Patrick. Sting wins a pretty good match by disqualification in 16:19.

6fL59iz.jpg

<hr>

As Sting began to get himself a piece of Flair, Hansen joined in to make it two on one. The advantage was short-lived though, as Lex Luger came rushing out to even the odds.

Seeing Luger rushing toward the ring, Flair made himself scarce, leaving Hansen on the wrong end of a Stinger Splash and a Torture Rack to close Superbrawl.

Post-show notes:

- Obviously nothing about this card screams "one of the greatest ppv events of all-time" as I had Jim Ross refer to it in the show intro, but that was just his style for show intros during this time period, complete hyperbole.

- Sting is a little tricky to write promos for in 1991. I watched dozens of them for research and there was just no consistency to them, either in style or quality. Sometimes he would speak at a regular pace and sometimes he would talk a mile-a-minute. Sometimes he would scream the entire time and sometimes he would speak calmly. And still other times he would go back and forth between calm and yelling, a la Randy Savage. Then on top of all that, he didn't really have a catchphrase in this time period either.

- Funnily enough though, I got this in the segment notes in Sting's interview segment, "Sting invented a new catchphrase that will likely boost his ability on the microphone as he now has a go-to line."

- The Sting vs. Stan Hansen match suffered from a "definite lack of psychology".

- Bobby Eaton's face turn was a complete success.

- Brad Armstrong's heel turn was a complete success.

- I could have turned Tommy Rich like they did in real life, but Brad, or Bradley, Armstrong is such a good worker that I decided to mix it up and give him a bit of a push. He's certainly not gonna be the next Steve Austin or The Rock, but he's just too good to be stuck in a tag team going nowhere with Tim Horner. And no offense to Horner, who's a decent worker in his own right.

- Lex Luger sustained a Finger Sprain as a result of a small botch by Sid, but he'll be back at 100% in just four days.

- Michael Wallstreet sustained a hip sprain in the 6-man tag but he'll be back at 100% in just three days.

Several predictors correctly guessed the winner in 12 out of 13 matches with most of the misses being in either the Luger vs. Sid match or one of the matches relating to the Television title. And even though the winners of some of these matches were pretty obvious, that's not easy to do, so congratulations!

Reminder that this round of the prediction contest will run through Clash of the Champions in March, so there's ample opportunity to gain ground if you're behind or miss a couple shows. Thanks so much to everyone for reading, predicting and commenting!

lol in all seriousness, great show and happy you're back. Sid going over Luger for the US title is really intriguing. I love both guys - and (spoiler alert!), one may or may not just be WWF bound in your parallel universe that a young Shane O' Mac is running! <img alt="" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/cool.png.f00d2562b2c1d873a09323753efdb041.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

I was planning on posting February, Week 2's WCW Saturday Night and WCW Main Event today but there's been a change of plans.

I've decided that before this diary goes any further I'm going to implement a change in format for weekly television. Instead of posting one week of television at a time, I'll be borrowing from The Final Countdown's excellent Heart and Soul diary from 2016, and posting an entire month of television programming at a time in a single post. With this change, the weekly television programming will lose all wrestler photos for matches and angles. This is a tough pill to swallow as I really do like the way shows look with the worker photos, but this will save me tons of time and energy that I hope will allow me to advance the game at a much faster pace. I really enjoyed writing my last diary for TEW 2016, but it took me roughly seven real world months to advance just 11 months in the game. Sure, I had to take a couple multi-week breaks for personal reasons during that seven months, but that's still an absurd amount of time for so little overall progress.

Proceeding this way also means I'll have to drop the prediction contest for weekly television episodes. However, I will still post the prediction contests for PPV and Clash of the Champions shows. Really though, the weekly television matches tend to be very predictable anyway and some weeks there aren't even enough prediction worthy matches to bother in the first place. Besides, I think it's a lot easier for readers who want to predict to keep up with one round of predictions per in-game month than five.

Note: Any predictions made for the February, Week 2 card I posted a few days ago will still be counted, so feel free to give that a shot if you're interested.

I'm also making one more change to the diary that's unrelated to the format change. I will no longer be limiting myself to only posting shows on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This sounded like a good idea on paper, but why limit myself if the next show/s is ready earlier than expected? This would just be one more thing slowing down my overall progress with the diary. I still won't post shows on the weekend though, and my originally stated intention to not post shows past 6 pm EST still stands. If a show/s hasn't been posted by that time, then you can be sure that it'll be at least the next weekday before it's up.

Finally, it's gonna take me a few days to get the new format just to my liking, and a few more days to update the previous shows in the diary to that new format, so I probably won't be ready to continue the diary until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. I really hate to take a week long break after I just went 11 days between January, Week 4 TV and Superbrawl, but it'll be a lot easier to change this now than it will later. Hopefully anyone following along and or commenting/predicting will stick around!

P.S. Sorry for writing a book on this guys! It was not my intention, but that's just my nature with these types of things.

Makes sense with the new format fella, ive often thought of doing a dynasty but the time factor has always put me off. But your right the way its done on Heart and Soul is brilliant and if i ever did do one thats the route i would go so cant wait for you to get back on track

The formatting change makes sense. I've been considering doing the following, especially with my kids going back to school Tuesday and it being all online/at home. However, I think it will add to your diary. A summary post allows you to get into the grove of telling the stories. I look forward to seeing it.

I'm gonna have to agree with Lev and Monk that I think that would be a worthwhile format change. The worker pics are nice but if I had to pick between that and faster progress then it's a landslide for progress.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the words of encouragement! And from the work I've done updating my previous month's shows, and what I've done for the February shows so far, I can now say with certainty that this diary is gonna move a lot faster with this new format. I can easily see myself getting through an entire in-game year every 2 or 3 months.

And with that said, the entire month of February TV and a predictions card for Clash of the Champions XIV should be posted tomorrow!

Aired February 2nd, 1991

1,900 in attendance at the Laredo Civic Center in Laredo, Texas

Announcers: Jim Ross & Jim Cornette

TV Rating: 1.35

Jim Ross and Jim Cornette welcome fans to the show, recap SuperBrawl, and announce a huge main event for the night. In a rematch from Superbrawl, new United States Champion Sid Vicious will defend the title against the man he won it from, Lex Luger. They also announce a rematch for the Television Championship for next week, as "Z-Man" Tom Zenk gets his rematch against new champion, Larry Zbyszko. That last announcement draws out Bobby Eaton, who challenges the winner to a Television title match at Clash of the Champions XIV later in the month, citing Zbyszko cheating to beat him in their number one contender match at SuperBrawl as the reason why he deserves it. (80)

Ricky Steamboat defeated Barry Houston in 3:37 by pinfall with a Diving Crossbody. (70)

The Minnesota Wrecking Crew, WCW's newest tag team, defeated Pez Whatley and Mike Graham in 7:54 when Crewman #2 pinned Mike Graham with a Double Underhook Suplex. (54)

Missy Hyatt interviews Sting next. Sting lets everyone know that his friend El Gigante is gonna be out of action for a long time as a result of the Horsemen's actions at SuperBrawl. Sting says first it was Barry Windham and now El Gigante, but he's not gonna stand by and let the Horsemen run roughshod over WCW. He's gonna take them out one by one, and he's starting at the top with Ric Flair! (99)

The Hardliners won a decent match against The Renegade Warriors in 9:14 when Dick Slater submitted Mark Youngblood with a Figure Four Leglock. (70)

Tony Schiavone is with "Stunning" Steve Austin and Madusa for a pre-match interview. Austin gloats about taking out the Funks at SuperBrawl and says he's just getting started. "Every man in WCW better have eyes in the back of his head, because Stunning Steve Austin and Madusa, have just begun checking names, off my ass whoopin' list! And it's a loooong list!" (64)

Steve Austin defeated Hector Guerrero in 4:40 by pinfall with a Stun Gun. (40)

Buddy Landel defeated Joey Maggs by disqualification in 4:23 when Vader ran in and attacked both men, but attacked Landel first. (54)

Vader continued his onslaught post-match, squashing both Landel and Maggs with a Vader Bomb and tossing Referee Mike Atkins out of the ring. As Vader was leaving, Gordon Solie met him at ringside to ask him what the meaning of that was. Vader fumes that he still hasn't been given a real opponent to face since he's been here, and Junkyard Dog was nothing more than a washed up has-been. He pushes Solie aside to leave, vowing to interrupt one match per week until he gets what he wants and saying he won't wrestle again until then. (54)

Tony Schiavone announces this week's Top 10 Singles wrestlers of the week, with Sting topping the list yet again after his victory over Stan Hansen at SuperBrawl.

1.) Sting

2.) Ric Flair

3.) Sid Vicious - U.S. Champion

4.) Ricky Steamboat

5.) Larry Zbyszko - TV Champion

6.) Lex Luger

7.) Vader

8.) Steve Austin

9.) Dustin Rhodes

10.) Stan Hansen

(95)

WCW United States Championship: In a rematch of the United States Championship match from Superbrawl, Lex Luger took a shot at winning his title back from Sid Vicious in the main event. It was a solid if unspectacular match, that had any chance to move past that ruined when Ric Flair ran in and attacked Luger just short of the 10-minute mark. Luger wins, but by disqualification, meaning Sid retains the title. (80)

Flair and Sid double-team Luger post-match as Sid hits a Powerbomb before Flair locks in a Figure Four. Sting hits the ring though, backing Sid into the corner with a flurry of punches and hitting the Stinger Splash. Flair takes that time to release the Figure Four and try to take out Sting's leg from behind. A hobbled Luger gets up to make the save though and the Horsemen retreat. (99)

Z-Man wins a warm up for his Television Championship rematch with Larry Zbyszko next week, pinning Lt. James Earl Wright in 5:53 with a Superkick. (52)

Gordon Solie interviews Ricky Morton and Jeff Jarrett. Morton wants another shot at Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard after they cheated at SuperBrawl, but Jarrett is able to convince him they're not ready and need more experience as team. (75)

Arn Anderson defeated The Italian Stallion in 5:42 by pinfall with a DDT. (78)

Gordon Solie is with Alexandra York, who introduces Brad Armstrong, known from now on as Bradley Armstrong, as the newest member of the York Foundation. Armstrong says it was a no-brainer to join the York Foundation and says he was disgusted every time he looked at Tim Horner because of how much of his career he wasted teaming with him. "I was going NOWHERE, as long as I was trying to drag Tim Horner's good for nothin' carcass with me, but now, with Ms. York at my side, I'm going all the way to the top!" (56)

The Young Pistols defeated El Cubano and George South in 7:06 when Tracy Smothers pinned South with a Doomsday Dropkick. (55)

Dustin Rhodes and Ron Garvin have some pre-match words for Dutch Mantell & Black Bart, but Rhodes had the final word, "I guess we learned at Superbrawl, Dutch Mantell, that even a low life like you has friends. Well, I've got friends too, Dutch, and mine has hands of stone. What's Black Bart got? I 'spect we're about to find out he's got nothin'!" (67)

In the main event of Main Event, Dustin Rhodes and Ron Garvin beat Dutch Mantell and Black Bart in 10:27 when Ron Garvin submitted Mantell with a Sharpshooter. (63)

Aired February 9th, 1991

2,000 in attendance at the Grambling Memorial Gym in Grambling, Louisiana

Announcers: Jim Ross & Jim Cornette

TV Rating: 1.36

Jim Ross and Jim Cornette open the show by announcing the Main Event of Clash of the Champions XIV, which will be live on TBS on Thursday, February 28th. It will be Sting teaming with his best friend Lex Luger to take on "Nature Boy" Ric Flair and United States Champion, Sid Vicious! (99)

Ricky Morton and Jeff Jarrett got a little more of the experience together that Jeff Jarrett said they needed on their road to an eventual rematch with Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard, defeating Mando Guerrero and Moondog Rex in 6:30 when Jarrett pinned Moondog Rex with a Forward Russian Leg Sweep. (65)

Dustin Rhodes and Buddy Landel fought to a no-contest next, when Big Van Vader kept his promise to interfere in one match a week until he gets a "real" opponent, trying to attack both men at 5:07. (40)

WCW World Television Championship: In our second Superbrawl championship rematch in as many weeks, Tom Zenk was unsuccessful at winning back the TV title he lost to Zbyszko there, falling to a Larryland Dreamer in 10:13. Larry Zbyszko makes defense number one of the WCW World Television title. (78)

After the match, Bobby Eaton comes out and lets Larry Zbyszko know that he's been given a WCW World Television Championship match for Clash of the Champions XIV. Zbyszko is furious, vigorously kicking the ropes as Eaton looks on with a smirk. (76)

Black Bart wanted another shot at Ron Garvin after Garvin and Dustin Rhodes beat he and Dutch Mantell on Main Event last week, but the end result was the same. Only this time, Garvin beat Bart by pinfall instead of submission, winning with a Knockout Punch from his "hands of stone" at 4:48. (48)

As Ron Garvin is about to leave the ringside area, he's confronted by Madusa. Steve Austin hops the guard rail and tries to attack from behind, but Garvin sees it coming and turns to catch him in the act. Austin makes a step toward Garvin to attack anyway, but thinks better of it. (52)

WCW's Top 10 Tag Teams of the Week are announced next, in a clip featuring Missy Hyatt.

1.) Doom - WCW World Tag Team Champions

2.) The Steiner Brothers - WCW United States Tag Team Champions

3.) Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard

4.) The Hardliners

5.) The York Foundation (Various Combinations)

6.) The Young Pistols

7.) Ricky Morton & Jeff Jarrett

8.) The Fabulous Freebirds

9.) The Minnesota Wrecking Crew

10.) The Renegade Warriors

(65)

The Hardliners stay undefeated in WCW, picking up a win over The Young Pistols in 9:46 when Dick Slater submitted Steve Armstrong with a Figure Four Leglock. (77)

After their match, The Hardliners speak with Tony Schiavone at ringside and challenge The Steiner Brothers to a United States Tag Title match at Clash of the Champions XIV. Dick Murdoch had the final words, "All we've heard about since we got here, is how tough the Steiners brothers are. What a load of crap! All I see when I look at you two BOYS, are a couple kids lookin' lost, in a real man's world. If ya got the guts, you'll put those belts up at Clash of the Champions. And if you do, you can take it to the bank that we're gonna take 'em from ya!" (61)

Dan Spivey was in Kevin Sullivan's corner for his main event bout with Sting, but even Spivey's shenanigans couldn't deter the Stinger from victory. With Referee Nick Patrick down after an Irish Whip gone wrong by Sting, Spivey came in and grabbed Sting from behind, holding him for Sullivan. Sullivan then pulled a metal spike out of his tights and took a swing at Sting, but he missed and took out Spivey instead. This allowed Sting to attack and down Sullivan with the Stinger Splash, before locking in the Scorpion Deathlock for the submission victory at 16:22. (82)

Bobby Eaton beat George South with an Alabama Jam in 5:14. (71)

The Minnesota Wrecking Crew defeated Hector and Chavo Guerrero in 6:34 when Crewman #1 pinned Chavo after a Wrecking Ball. (53)

WCW World Tag Team Champions Doom obliterated Art Barr and Keith Hart in 4:02. (44)

Freshly heel Brad Armstrong, with Alexandra York and Mr. Hughes in his corner, defeated youngster Joey Maggs in 4:42 with his new finisher The Strongarm Stretch. (44)

Tommy Rich tries to attack Brad Armstrong post-match, but Mr. Hughes gets the better of him to protect Armstrong. (59)

Diamond Dallas Page is interviewed by Missy Hyatt next, where he cuts a promo on Brian Pillman, ending it with a challenge. "Congratulations, Pillman! You've officially defeated every wrestler that The Diamond Exchange has to offer. You beat Hayes! You beat Garvin! And then you beat them BOTH in a tag match at Superbrawl! I mean, GOOD GOD!! That's VERY impressive! But there's one member of the Diamond Exchange you haven't beat. You haven't beat ME! You haven't beat D.D.P.! So what do you say, Pillman? Me and you at the Clash?" (57)

Brian Pillman defeated Dutch Mantell in the main event, winning with an Air Pillman in 10:25. (66)

Aired February 16th, 1991

TV Rating: 1.35

In his first match since being destroyed by Big Van Vader at Superbrawl, the Junkyard Dog scored a victory over Nick Busick in 5:41 by pinfall with a Powerslam. (71)

United States Tag Team Champions The Steiner Brothers defeated Lt. James Earl Wright and Mando Guerrero in 6:02 when Rick Steiner pinned Guerrero with a Steinerizer. (69)

As the Steiners celebrated, they were attacked by The Hardliners. Murdoch and Slater got the upperhand too, laying out both Steiners with Piledrivers.(61)

The Renegade Warriors beat El Cubano and Rip Rogers by DQ in 4:54 when Big Van Vader continued to make good on his promise to ruin one match per week until he gets a suitable challenge, and wiped out all four men. (38)

WCW's Top 10 Singles wrestlers is almost identical to last last time. The only change was Steve Austin and Vader switching places with Austin moving up since he's actually been winning matches instead of refusing them like Vader.

1.) Sting

2.) Ric Flair

3.) Sid Vicious - U.S. Champion

4.) Ricky Steamboat

5.) Larry Zbyszko - TV Champion

6.) Lex Luger

7.) Steve Austin

8.) Vader

9.) Dustin Rhodes

10.) Stan Hansen

(89)

Back from a commercial break and Dustin Rhodes is with Gordon Solie. Rhodes says he's can't believe a man the size of Vader would be such a baby when he doesn't get his way, but he knows a guy who would love to give Vader exactly what he wants at Clash of the Champions! Buddy Landel interrupts and challenges Rhodes himself to a match at Clash of the Champions, wanting to finish the match they didn't get a chance to when Vader ruined it last week. Rhodes agrees. (62)

Stan Hansen made his first appearance since losing to Sting at Superbrawl, getting back to form with a win over Hector Guerrero with a Lariat in 4:04. (78)

Ron Garvin is interviewed by Gordon Solie and announces he'll face Steve Austin at Clash of the Champions. Garvin said Austin's tricks with Madusa may have worked on Terry Funk, but he's got him all figured out now. "Austin, you made the rookie mistake of using your entire playbook too early, and you will pay for messin' with the man with the hands of stone, at Clash of the Champions!" (61)

Ricky Morton and Jeff Jarrett got a little bigger win in their quest for tag team experience this week, defeating the Minnesota Wrecking Crew in 11:01 when Jarrett pinned Crewman #2 with a Forward Russian Leg Sweep. (71)

Tony Schiavone interviews Larry Zbyszko next, who has some words for his Clash of the Champions opponent, and former friend, Bobby Eaton. "I've had some time to think about it Bobby, and you know I'm glad you're getting a shot at my television title at Clash of the Champions. Because for as long as we've been friends, and for as many miles as we've rode together down the road, I've just been waitin' for you to give me the excuse, to knock that stupid lookin' mullett off your head. And you've given it to me. So I just want to say, thank you, Bobby Eaton!"(77)

The final match of the night was more a showcase for the Horsemen than a true "main event," as all the other Horsemen were ringside to watch Tully Blanchard systematically dismantle a hapless Art Barr, finishing him with a a Slingshot Suplex in 6:51. (77)

Tony Schiavone catches up with the Horsemen before the show goes off the air, asking Flair about his match with Sid against Sting and Luger at Clash of the Champions. "STING, I was willin' to let EVERYTHING that happened between us last year go. I was gonna FORGET IT ALL! But then you had to go and stick your nose, in the Horsemen's business! And I'M NOT, gonna let THAT go! And as for you Luger, after Clash of the Champions, you'll be nothin' MORE, than a pile of MUSH, to be scraped off big Sid's boots! WOOOO!!!" (97)

Buddy Landel pins Mike Graham with a Corkscrew Elbow Drop in 6:15. (57)

Brian Pillman is with Missy Hyatt next, and says he's hesitant to accept DDP's challenge for Clash of the Champions since Page isn't a wrestler. Ultimately he decides to go through with it though, reasoning that Page is a grown man capable of making his own decisions. (61)

The Fabulous Freebirds defeated The Italian Stallion and David Kash in 8:15 after a Bulldog from Hayes to Kash. (58)

Paul E. Dangerously interviews The York Foundation next, informing Bradley Armstrong that Tommy Rich has made a challenge to him for Clash of the Champions XIV. Armstrong agrees to face Rich but at Clash of the Champions XV in March, and only if Rich can beat Terrance Taylor at Clash of the Champions XIV. (56)

(99)

Z-Man defeated Ken Wayne in 5:55 by pinfall with a Super Kick. (62)

Black Bart defeated Gypsy Joe in 4:56 by pinfall with a Diving Leg Drop. (40)

"Stunning" Steve Austin and Madusa are in The Danger Zone with Paul E. Dangerously next. Austin is unimpressed by Ron Garvin's claim last week that he already has Austin's entire playbook figured out, telling Garvin "I don't normally do this, but to borrow a phrase from one of the all-time greats, just when you think you have all the answers, Steve Austin, changes the questions!" (54)

After getting the "real challenge" he so desperately wanted for Clash of the Champions, courtesy of a friend of Dustin Rhodes, Big Van Vader was finally back in the ring in an official match, beating both Renegade Warriors in a handicap match in less than five minutes. (60)

A short segment announcing WCW's Top 10 Tag Teams of the Week is followed by a pre-taped Steiner Brothers promo where they accept the challenge of The Hardliners for a U.S. Tag Title match at Clash of the Champions. They don't stop there though, as Scott addresses WCW World Tag Team Champions Doom too, "And Doom, don't think for one second that just because we're holdin' these U.S. Tag titles, that we've forgot those World Tag Titles you took from us last year. As far as we're concerned they're ours, and some day soon, we're comin' to get 'em! "

2.) The Steiner Brothers - WCW United States Tag Team Champions

3.) Arn Anderson & Tully Blanchard

4.) The Hardliners

5.) The York Foundation (Various Combinations)

6.) Ricky Morton & Jeff Jarrett

7.) The Young Pistols

8.) The Fabulous Freebirds

9.) The Minnesota Wrecking Crew

10.) The Renegade Warriors

(67)

Dan Spivey defeated Bob Holly in 5:59 by pinfall with a Spivey Spike. (61)

In a small preview of Clash of the Champions coming up in just five days, Bobby Eaton teamed with Dustin Rhodes to face their individual Clash opponents, Buddy Landel and WCW World Television Champion Larry Zbyszko. And in a potential sign of things to come, it was Eaton picking up the victory for his team, pinning Zbyszko right in the middle of the ring with an Alabama Jam at 12:08. (74)

After almost a week of teasing, Jim Ross announces that this coming Thursday at Clash of the Champions, full details will be revealed on exactly how the first ever WCW World Champion will be crowned. (100)

It was time for the main event, and if this match was any indication of what Flair and Sid could expect from Sting and Lex Luger at Clash of the Champions, then the Horsemen were likely in trouble. Sting and Luger looked more comfortable working as a team than even the Freebirds did, and from start to finish it was their match to lose. Or win in this case, which they did when Luger submitted Jimmy Garvin with a Torture Rack at 8:38. (87)

In a post-match interview with Tony Schiavone, Sting and Luger are asked about Ric Flair's comments from last week about Sting sticking his nose in the Horsemen's business lately and about their tag match at Clash of the Champions this Thursday. Neither man minces words, but Sting was especially fired up about Flair's claim of Sting always getting in Horsemen business, "The reason I'm ALWAYS gettin' in your business RIC FLAIR, is because your business, is ALWAYS the business, of EVIL! If you're not takin' someone's leg out with a crowbar, you're diggin' at their eyes with your slimy little fingers! If you're not using someone's tights for leverage, you're crackin' them in the skull with brass knuckles! And if you're not payin' someone off to distract the referee to help you beat some poor guy, you're paying someone else off to take they guy out backstage beforehand! In other words, Ric Flair, if you're not cheatin', you're not breathin', and as long as I'M breathin', I'm gonna keep doin' my best, to make sure you NEVER see any peace!" (92)

Gordon Solie previews Clash of the Champions XIV in a WCW Magazine segment, and confirms that Tommy Rich has accepted Bradley Armstrong's stipulation that he must first beat Terrance Taylor at Clash of the Champions XIV to get a shot at Armstrong at Clash of the Champions XV. (88)

Kevin Sullivan gets a win over Joey Maggs with a Devil Stomp in 4:59. (64)

The Young Pistols beat Lt. James Earl Wright and Doug Somers in 8:23 when Tracy Smothers pinned Wright with a Doomsday Dropkick. (57)

Mr. Hughes defeated Al Madril in 5:23 by submission with a Running Splash. (31)

Tonight's main event of Sid Vicious vs. Junkyard Dog is announced to be a United States Championship match, a rarity for an episode of Main Event. And that match is coming up next! (69)

WCW United States Championship: If there was any doubt going into this one that Junkyard Dog was in the twilight of his career, it was certainly gone afterwards. Absolute domination from bell to bell by Sid, as JYD thuds to the mat on the wrong end of a Powerbomb at 4:48. Sid Vicious makes defense number two of the WCW United States title. (65)

Top 5 In-ring Performances for this months television:

Stan Hansen - 95 vs. Hector Guerrero - February 16th episode of WCW Saturday Night

Sting - 94 w/ Lex Luger vs. Fabulous Freebirds - February 23rd episode of WCW Saturday Night

Ricky Steamboat - 91 vs. Barry Houston - February 2nd episode of WCW Saturday Night

Ricky Steamboat - 88 vs. Rip Rogers - February 17th episode of WCW Main Event

Sting - 83 vs. Kevin Sullivan - February 9th episode of WCW Saturday Night

Chemistry discoveries for the month:

- Sting and Kevin Sullivan don't click at all, and it made their match on the February 9th episode of Saturday Night awkward.

- Stan Hansen and Hector Guerrero have excellent chemistry as opponents.

- Lex Luger and Sting have great chemistry as partners. Duh!

New protege relationships for the month:

- None.

Worker comments/promises for the month:

- Ricky Steamboat offered to put over El Gigante. The offer is good for 3 matches over 5 months.

- Sid thinks Dick Slater is a waste of time, claiming he doesn't connect with the fans.

Other notes for the month:

- For this time period I wasn't sure about the "ass whoopin'" line from Austin on the February 2nd episode of WCW Saturday Night, but I figured they could've just bleeped it anyway since the show was taped.

- Terrance Taylor suffered an Iliolumbar Ligament Sprain in his match with Chavo Guerrero on the February 17th episode of Main Event. His match with Tommy Rich for Clash of the Champions XIV is still on though, as he'll be back in six days.

- Dick Murdoch turned up so drunk to the February 23rd WCW Saturday Night taping that he had to be sent home as he was in no condition to work. I fined him as this was his first offense, although I kinda doubt it will be his last given his "Scumbag" personality trait and the fact that he's a drinker. He was very unhappy, but his partner Dick Slater, Barry Windham, Dusty Rhodes and Terry Funk were elated with my decision.

- The 89 I scored for the February 23rd episode of WCW Saturday Night's is now my highest show grade of the save so far. The 87 match grade for the Sting/Luger vs. Fabulous Freebirds main event from that show is now my second highest match grade of the save.

- Jim Cornette seems to be clique building, having forged an alliance between Kevin Sullvian and Jim Ross, who now have a strong friendship.

- The Jim Ross and Jim Cornette segment on the February 23rd Saturday Night where they confirm a major announcement for Clash of the Champions regarding the crowning of the first ever WCW World Champion, was my first 100 rated angle or match of the save.

- Brad Armstrong's new finisher the Strongarm Stretch is basically just the Crippler Crossface.

Thanks for the heads up Gorilla! Not sure how I missed that. I'm also not sure how missed the fact that I'd accidentally left Flair vs. El Gigante from Superbrawl on this COC card. They've both been fixed now.
