WCW Monday Nitro Live! May Week 3, 1998 - Episode #138– “Outsider”

WCW Monday Nitro comes on the air to a savage attack backstage at the Norfolk Scope already in progress. Bret Hart is being beaten down by Konnan and the Macho Man Randy Savage while Syxxx shouts insults at the Hitman. When Bret starts to fight back, Syxxx looks around and grabs a pipe and swings hard at Bret's left arm. Bret drops to the ground screaming and clutching his arm in pain. Booker T & Chris Jericho come charging down the hall with officials and medical personnel which causes the nWo to run away.

We go into the arena where the fans are in shock and so are Tony, Mike & Larry who welcome us to the final edition of WCW Monday Nitro before this Sunday's Slamboree on pay per view. The announcers point out that last week Syxxx promised Bret that he would not make it to the ppv and perhaps the nWo has just made good on that threat. We hope to have an update later on about the condition of the Hitman. But tonight, in our featured contest, Chris Jericho & Lex Luger will battle for WCW as they take on The Outsiders. Also Rey Mysterio Jr will face Super Crazy and if Super Crazy can win, he gets Eddie Guerrero this Sunday on pay per view. Let's get right to the ring with our opening contest on Nitro featuring Alex Wright.

ALEX WRIGHT W/RICK RUDE VS KAZ HAYASHI

Kaz gets in some hope spots through the match but the large part of this match is dominated by Wright. The only time that Wright is in trouble is when his cockiness and dancing lands him in trouble which Rick Rude is visibly frustrated at. Finally Rude yells “finish this” and Alex gets serious and drops Kaz on the back of his head with a German Suplex for the three count.

After the match, Rick Rude grabs a mic and looks at Alex and says that last week he nearly beat Bret Hart, but the reason Alex did not is because Alex forgot who he is. Alex Wright beat the hell out of Curt Hennig just like he beat the hell out of this peon. Maybe it is time for Alex Wright drop the goofiness, drop the dancing, drop trying to be entertaining and embrace his birthright. Alex looks pensive as Rude tells Wright “let’s go talk.” Wright follows his friend with the announcers wondering what is going on.

We go to a video package on The Steiner Brothers who have promised to lay it all on the line this Sunday on ppv when the challenge G.T.T. for the World Tag Team Championship. The video highlights the storied history of WCW’s greatest tag team. And the announcers put over that it all could come to an end at Slamboree. Stick around, more Nitro after this time out.

Monday Nitro returns to an ambulance in the back. Bret Hart is sitting in it and with him is Booker T & Chris Jericho and now Lex Luger. Paramedics are tending to the Hitman telling him that he needs to go to the hospital. That his arm may be broken. Jericho goes to join Bret, but Booker stops Chris. Booker says that he will go with Bret to make sure the nWo doesn't finish the job at the hospital. But this Sunday, Savage's ass is Booker's for what he has done tonight. Booker tells Jericho & Lex that they have a job to do tonight. Bret, through pain, tells Jericho and Lex to make WCW proud. Booker gets in the ambulance with Bret and it speeds off into the night.

The Nitro girls dance and Kimberly is finally back with them as Raven’s Nest is not anywhere near the crowd. The dance routine focuses on Kimberly and the girls hug her when it’s done.

Chris Benoit w/Woman comes out for the next match. As he walks down the ring, the Nitro Girls walk up the ring and Benoit and Kimberly look at each other and high five. A sign of the unison in their shared hatred of Raven. Woman smiles at this and encourages her man to go to the ring for a match with Dave Taylor.

CHRIS BENOIT W/WOMAN VS DAVE TAYLOR

As one would expect this is a very technical style match that spans a commercial break as both men use submission and mat based holds. Taylor is able to ground Benoit with a knee to the back of the neck that Benoit sells as Taylor tries to rip his head off. Eventually Benoit is about to reverse the old “Regal Stretch” and turn it into a Crippler Crossface and the Brit has no choice but to quickly submit.

After the match, Benoit and Woman go to the entrance set where Mean Gene is standing by but before Benoit can be asked a question, Ric Flair & Arn Anderson come out. Arn and Ric congratulate Benoit and confirm that the Horsemen will ride again and that Chris Benoit and Woman are foundations of the most elite group that everyone thought was dead. And this Sunday on pay per view, the Crippler will Cripple that cry-baby Raven and take the US title. Benoit says this Sunday, the games end. This Sunday, the talking is done. This Sunday, the whining is done. And this Sunday, Raven’s neck will snap all thanks to the Crippler. The four put up 4 Fingers as Mean Gene tells us to stick around, Nitro is back in a moment with the World Tag Team Champions, G.T.T. - we’re live from the Scope on TNT.

Nitro returns to a commercial for Slamboree focused on Chris Benoit vs Raven for the US Title.

Mean Gene is in the locker room and he calls in the WCW World Tag Team Champions G.T.T. who come over looking ready for battle. Mark LoMonaco says that the world better spend the next six days watching all of their tapes of the Steiners’ to get ready for their farewell. This Sunday at Slamboree all the good times come to an end. The boys from Michigan take their final bow because these belts are all that matters in this world. Devon says that they came to WCW to prove to dismantle the tag team division and honestly, they are surprised at how easily G.T.T was able to conquer this division. This is a division that is drenched in history with names like The Andersons, the Rock N Roll Express, the Midnight Express, Arn & Tully, the Hollywood Blondes and, yes the Steiners. LoMonaco says and the one thing that they all have in common is that they were once great teams but those days came to an end. And this Sunday, the Steiners will join the relics of the past. Enjoy it, six days from now - Rick and Scott take their final bow, Devon says Testify as the champs walk off and Gene, in disgust, throws to the next match which is Rey Mysterio vs Super Crazy with the Cruiserweight Title shot this Sunday on the line.

REY MYSTERIO JR W/EDDIE GUERRERO AND CHAVO GUERRERO JR. VS SUPER CRAZY

This match is all about the struggle between Rey’s desire to do the right thing and not be played and give Super Crazy his match and his role as being subservient to Eddie Guerrero. Everytime Super Crazy gains an advantage either Chavo or Eddie causes a distraction to prevent it. Rey eventually has no choice but to have this match and both he and Super Crazy put on a Lucha Style clinic. The finish comes when Super Crazy misses top rope moonsault as Rey rolls out of the way and that propels Chavo onto the apron. Eddie slides in behind Super Crazy and nails a Brainbuster onto the Cruiser Title and slides out. Eddie orders Rey to cover Super Crazy and after a long pause, Rey does so. 1...2….3.

WINNER BY PINFALL: REY MYSTERIO JR

After the match, Eddie celebrates while Rey looks broken hearted. Eddie orders Chavo to hold Super Crazy up. Eddie demands that Rey nail Super Crazy with the belt and when Rey says no, Eddie says that Rey must hit Crazy or unmask in front of the world. Just as Rey is about to hit Super Crazy, JJ Dillon comes out. JJ says that he was watching backstage and saw what happened. Now he cannot reverse the referee’s decision, but he can make a match. This Sunday at Slamboree, Eddie WILL defend his Cruiserweight Title against Super Crazy and La Familia are barred from ringside. There is any chicanery in this match, Eddie Guerrero will be disqualified and will lose the title. Eddie is furious but he has no choice but to accept his fate this Sunday on pay per view.

RANDY SAVAGE W/ELIZABETH VS JERRY LYNN

This match is clearly a big opportunity for Jerry Lynn to show what he can do and early on, he seizes this opportunity by stunning the Macho Man and nearly securing a pinfall with a Cradle Piledriver. Elizabeth trips Lynn as he charges Macho and that’s the end of the offense of Lynn as Savage just mercilessly beats Jerry from then on before dropping two Elbow Drops for the eventual three count.

WINNER BY PINFALL: RANDY SAVAGE

Oooh yeah.

We go to a video package of Brian Adams’ WCW debut attacking Goldberg. We are told that this Sunday on pay-per-view, Adams will challenge Goldberg for the Television Title. When Nitro comes back, Goldberg - Da Man - will be in action against Wrath in a TV Title defense. Don’t go anywhere.

GOLDBERG © VS WRATH

Wrath gets in a surprising amount of offense early on, even stunning Goldberg by lifting him up into a Pump Handle Slam when Goldberg quickly tried to Spear Wrath. But, “Da Man” is just too much of a powerhouse and soon Goldberg does Spear Wrath and set him up for the Jackhammer. Just as Goldberg gets Wrath up, Brian Adams jumps over the barricade and into the ring and blasts Goldberg from behind ending the match in a disqualification.

WINNER BY DISQUALIFICATION AND STILL WCW TELEVISION CHAMPION: GOLDBERG

LEX LUGER AND CHRIS JERICHO VS THE OUTSIDERS

A wild brawl starts the match before the Outsiders control the ring and keep Luger from the hot tag as Nash and Hall really try to break the Total Package. That changes when Nash throws Lex into the corner and runs with a big boot, but Lex ducks and Nash crotches the rope. Lex is able to tag Jericho just as Nash tags in Hall. Hall and Jericho share near falls. The finish is Chris Jericho nails a Double Knee slam (Codebreaker) on Hall after Hall gets posted a turnbuckle and covers.Nash sees this and tries to run to break up the count but Luger lifts Nash up into the Torture Rack. The ref counts three and Chris Jericho has pinned Scott Hall.

WINNERS BY PINFALL: LEX LUGER AND CHRIS JERICHO

Lights go out. In the darkness a series of Crows screaming can be heard all through the Scope. When the lights come back on, a crow is perched on the turnbuckle looking Kevin Nash right in the face.

All of the nWo are startled and don’t see...

The World Heavyweight Champion Sting right behind them on the floor with a baseball bat. Sting wallops Konnan in the back with a bat as Jericho and Luger begin to ready for combat in the ring. The nWo tries to retreat but Sting is holding everyone off and pushing them closer to the ring. All of the members of the nWo end up on the apron and that is when Sting points his bat directly at Kevin Nash. Sting charges the nWo on the floor as Luger and Jericho charge the Outsiders in the ring. Tony, Mike & Bobby scream that we’re out of time and remind everyone to tune into Slamboree this Sunday as Nitro goes off the air.

As Rick and Scott are overwhelmed at the support, the brothers walk down the hall getting pats on the back and wishes of good luck here tonight. Seemingly the entire locker room, with the exception of the World Tag Team Champions, are in the corner of The Steiner Brothers.

Big man match where Adams gets some shots in on Goldberg, but Goldberg is too powerful for the challenger. The finish of the match comes when Goldberg goes for a Spear but Adams is shielding the TV Title that he grabbed from the time keeper when they were on the floor and blasts Goldberg right in the head as he charges knocking Goldberg out and forcing the ref to call for the bell.

After the match, Goldberg is busted open and Adams gets on top of the former Falcon and delivers rights and lefts into his open wound. Adams makes Goldberg stand up and he is out on his feet as Adams charges with the belt and nails Goldberg who falls in a heap, out cold. Adams takes the title with him as officials check on Goldberg and the announcers reinforce that Brian Adams is not the TV champion.

Mean Gene asks them how do they feel about the fact that their careers as team is on the line tonight against G.T.T. and Scott says sometimes you have to risk it all to achieve it all. They’re all in tonight and the Steiner Brothers will become the World Tag Team Champions. Rick goes to agree with Scott when Mark LoMonaco & Devon Hughes walk into the shot. The tag champs clap for the Steiners and say that all of this is touching. The reaction that Rick and Scotty had when they arrived was touching. But you know what will be more touching? The farewell that G.T.T. will show the Steiners tomorrow night in Boston when they are retired. Time’s up, boys. It’s a new generation’s time to shine. G.T.T. walk off laughing as Gene tells us that match is still to come here at Slamboree.

Super Crazy gets several near falls and they end up on the floor where Eddie hits a Frog Splash from the top rope to Super Crazy on the floor. When Eddie rolls Crazy in, the champ climbs to the top to deliver another Frog Splash but Crazy shakes the ropes and Eddie is crotched. Super Crazy climbs up for a Huricanranna but Eddie holds onto the top and Crazy hits the mat hard. Eddie cradles his opponent and puts his foot on the ropes for leverage, which the ref doesn’t see...for the 1...2...3.

Savage is cocky but that proves to be a mistake because Booker blasts Savage with a series of Haymakers and then nails a Front Slam (Book-End) for a close two count that is broken up by Elizabeth quickly hopping on the apron to distract the ref and Booker. This allows Savage to get back into control but the Macho Man cannot put Booker down. Booker battles back and goes for the Harlem Hangover but misses. Macho flies off for the Big Elbow...1...2...Booker barely kicks out. Booker battles back and clotheslines Savage over the ropes before falling in the ring, still hurt from the battle. This sends Savage into a frenzy. Macho Man throws David Penzer down and steals his chair while Elizabeth again gets onto the apron. Savage throws it into the ring and slides in and prepares to nail Booker but the referee grabs the chair and fights with Savage for the chair. This distraction allows Elizabeth to reach into her purse and sneak up on Booker and spray hairspray in Booker’s eyes. He rolls around screaming in pain as Elizabeth leaves the ring, Savage quickly rolls Booker up. The ref never saw a thing and has to count the 3 count.

The story of this match is G.T.T. isolating Rick for a large portion of this match but the heart of the Dog Faced Gremlin is in full effect as he kicks out of near fall after near fall. Eventually the champs, arrogantly allow Rick to tag in Scott - confident that Rick is spent. From there Scott tries to hold his own, but the numbers game is the differing factor. Yet, like his older brother, Scott kicks out of pin attempt after pin attempt. Finally Scotty backdrops Devon out of the ring and the comeback begins and soon Rick is back in and all four men brawl. When the champs set up Rick for the Death Drop, Scott is able to trip LoMonaco as he charges the ropes. Rick delivers a brutal Steiner-Line onto LoMonaco knocking him out of the ring and Scotty sets up Devon on his shoulders while Rick flies off with the Bulldog. Rick covers..1...2...3! The Steiners win the titles and stay a team!

This is a wild brawl that goes all over the arena and see’s the Nest get involved early until Mongo shows up in the back with a pipe and lays waste to the entire Nest leaving them back there. From then on, this match is one on one as Benoit and Raven punish each other. At one point Benoit sets a table up on the top rope, places Raven on it and does a German Suplex from the top of the table into the ring for a near fall. Raven battles back and he and Benoit trade near falls. The finish comes when Raven grabs a Kendo Stick from outside and prepares to waffle Benoit with it in the ring. Unable to stand it, Woman gets in the ring and grabs the stick from the champion. The distraction of this move allows Benoit to nail Raven from behind but Woman tells Chris she wants to hit Raven. Benoit holds the champion as Woman swings the kendo stick….and Raven ducks. Woman slams the stick into Benoit’s face. She is stunned and Raven shoves her to the mat and grabs the stick and hits Benoit one more time directly across the eyes and then nails the Evenflow DDT. 1...2….3.

As the announcers are stunned, Woman crawls seductively to Raven and ends up in his arms. The two lock lips as Benoit, struggling to see out of one eye, is starting to sit up right - realizing what is going on. With Woman’s encouragement, Raven nails Benoit one more time with the DDT. And Raven and woman walk away hand in hand while Dusty screams “what the hell is going on here? She set him up!”

The announcers are stunned as they speculate that Woman’s return to WCW was all a set up from the beginning. We see officials check on Benoit and slowly help him from the ring as he holds onto his eyes and goes to the back. The announcers point out that Raven has taken out Diamond Dallas Page by using Kimberly against him. Has now taken out Chris Benoit by, apparently, stealing Woman from him. What will the United States Champion do next? Well we have to turn the corner now to our next match. The biggest match in the history of Chris Jericho’s career. He gets Scott Hall one-on-one..next. Lets go to the ring.

Jericho and Hall lock up and Hall paint-brushes Jericho who stands up and deck’s the Outsider and is on top of Hall immediately. Jericho scores with the Lionsault for a near fall but Hall catches Jericho when he does a Cross Body and nails Jericho with the Fall-Away Slam. From then Hall starts beating down the young lion but Scott Hall cannot get a win which clearly frustrates him. Hall nails a back elbow but the force sends Jericho through the ropes and to the floor. On the floor Hall is lured in by Jericho who sends Hall knee first into the steps. They go back into the ring where Jericho hits a top rope dropkick and locks in the Liontamer. Hall nearly gets to the ropes before Jericho drags him back into the center ring. Hall is able to turn over and use his leg strength to kick Jericho into a corner. Hall backs up and when Jericho charges, he does a drop toe hold and Jericho collides head first into a second turnbuckle. Hall lifts Jericho up and nails the Outsider’s Edge for a tough 3 count.

After the match, as Scott Hall poses, even he must give a little respect to the fight that Jericho just had. Syxxx finally says that he has this and as Buffer announces him to the world, Syxxx enters the ring while the nWo departs.

SYXXX VS BRET HART

This is a fantastic technical match that sees Bret control early trying to secure the Sharpshooter, but his arm continues to give out. Eventually Syxxx throws Bret shoulder first into the ringpost on the floor and dominates the second half of the match and even locks in the Buzzkiller but Bret ties his legs up into the rope. This brings the nWo charging to the ring but they are stopped when Davey Boy Smith & Jim Neidhart jump the barricade with chairs.

The nWo can’t believe it as Davey & Neidhart hold them off and this allows Bret clips Syxxx’s knee and lock in the Sharpshooter, with his injured arm Bret is barely able to hold on but he does. With no one to save him, Syxxx quickly surrenders.

I agree with Jay I feel like i enjoyed woman more as a heel. Which is why i like the pairing of woman and Raven. I think they fit well together. Sidebar I just remember watching Woman and Miss Elizabeth accompanying Ric Flair to the ring and thinking how Flair is the man.

And tonight, the new champions will be here as they defend their tag team titles against Stevie Richards & Riggs of the Nest. And in our main event Lex Luger will go one-on-one with Kevin Nash who, in twenty-seven days, will challenge WCW World Heavyweight Champion Sting for the title at The Great American Bash. Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero come out gloating about Eddie’s win last night. Behind them is Rey Mysterio looking increasingly sad, his head down low. The announcers put over how despicable Eddie’s actions were at Slamboree and how tortured Rey has been. Eddie orders Rey to hold the ropes open for him and Chavo as they enter the ring for their tag team match.

A lot of high spots in this one but the cousins Guerrero deploy excellent chemistry as they both cheat to keep themselves in the match and use distractions of the ref to get their way while Rey is forced to watch. The end comes when Chavo nails a Snap Brainbuster onto Blitzkrieg and Eddie flies off for the Frog Splash onto Blitzkrieg for the 3 count.

After the win, Eddie forces Rey into the ring and orders Rey to hand Eddie his championship. Rey goes to do so but then Eddie says “no..holmes...give it to me on your knees”...Rey looks murderous but goes to do as he is told.

That is when Dean Malenko comes out to the ring with a microphone and asks Rey what is he doing? Dean looks at Rey and says “I know you lost a match to him, but this? You’re on your bended knee for *him*? What has happened to you?” Rey looks emotional and goes to speak, but shakes his head. Eddie snaps his fingers and tells Rey to get out of the ring which Rey does. Eddie looks at Dean and warns Dean that Dean may not be cleared to wrestle this week and that is the only reason that Dean is not out on his ass right now - because Eddie doesn’t hit an injured man, don’t make the mistake of sticking your nose in La Familia’s business again. Eddie walks away with Chavo cheering and Rey looking like a lost soul as the announcers tell us to stick around, Nitro will be right back from Boston.

WCW Monday Nitro returns with a “Great American Bash moment” and it is the first War Games match at The Great American Bash tour on July 4, 1987 in Atlanta, Georgia where The Road Warriors team defeated the Horsemen. The Great American Bash is in twenty-seven days from Baltimore - and only on pay-per-view.

Brian Adams comes out with the WCW TV Title around his waist like he is the champion. While he walks to the ring, a small lower-third screen shows pre recorded comments where Adams says he beat the hell out of Goldberg and that makes him the champion now. He’s the TV Champion because he can be and if Goldberg doesn’t like it, come do something about it.

.Richards & Riggs really give the tag champs a run for their money and do a terrific job isolating Rick for a big portion of the match. Rick takes some brutal punishment and even kicks out of a double powerbomb. Eventually Rick gets back into it with some Steiner-Lines before Scotty makes the hot tag. Scott cleans the house and the finish comes; Scott Steiner nails the Steiner Screwdriver on Stevie for the pinfall.

Sting is a big freaking deal in WCW but, this place we’re in right now - Boston - Big Sexy has been a big freaking deal in this part of the country for the last 5 years. Nash walks to the back with the announcers wondering if the nWo really isn’t here tonight. But they talk about how focused Nash is at the pyro explodes and Hour #2 kicks off. We go to Tony, Bobby & Mike at the announce booth who plug tonight’s main event. We go back to last night where Jim Neidhart & Davey Boy Smith made their WCW debut protecting Bret Hart. The announcers throw to our next match which is Neidhart & Davey Boy w/Bret Hart against Wrath & Mortis.

DAVEY BOY SMITH AND JIM NEIDHART VS MORTIS AND WRATH

This match is about showcasing Davey Boy & The Anvil as both men show devastatingly powerful moves that send Mortis flying around the ring. When Wrath tags in, he is able to hold his own but eventually Davey Boy nails a Powerslam onto Wrath for the three count.

Raven and the Nest jump over the barricade and enter the ring looking at Curt Hennig and tells him to back off for a min. Raven goes into a diatribe about how his entire world has been nothingness. Has been pain. Has been blackness and despair. But, finally a light has been shined in his life. His queen has arrived and Benoit? Raven feel’s your pain. Raven then points to the crowd which begins to part like the sea as Woman sits on the shoulder of Reese who walks her to the ring. Woman’s make-up is black, her hair looks wild and she’s in leather. Reese steps over the barricade with her on his shoulder and places her right on the apron. The Nest holds open the ropes and she gets in and kisses Raven. She gets to the floor as Raven prepares to defend his US Title against Hennig.

Hennig and Raven have a match that starts off as a brawl but then turns into a scientific contest proving that Raven is indeed a good technical wrestler. Hennig nails a Hennig-Plex for a near fall but Raven kicks out. Raven begins to fight back, but every time it seems Hennig has an answer for the US Champion. Soon both men hit the ropes and collide head first leaving them both down and Woman reaching over the barricade where Kidman hands her a Singapore Cane. The finish of the match sees Woman, in full view of the ref since it is Raven’s Rules, nail Hennig from behind with a Singapore Cane right in the head which causes Hennig to stumble into a Evenflow DDT as Raven stands up again. Raven covers while Woman stands in the corner smiling, 1...2...3.

DDP grabs a folding chair and swings at every member of The Nest that attacks him before spearing Raven on the floor and choking Raven while delivering brutal punches. Woman jumps on Page’s back and gouges his eyes which distracts DDP. DDP goes after Woman and that allows Reese to throw Page into a row of chairs. Raven grabs Woman and they go running for their life as Page gets past the big man and gives chase.

LEX LUGER VS KEVIN NASH

Early portion of the match sees Nash dominating with power moves but they only minimally damage The Total Package. Without the nWo at ringside, Nash becomes vulnerable as Lex battles back and works on Nash’s neck to prepare for the Torture Rack. The finish comes when Lex charges but Nash nails a big kick to the face. And then Snake Eyes. Nash calls for the Jackknife and puts Luger in it when suddenly a dummy that looks exactly like Kevin Nash falls from the top of the ring into the center of the ring and is hanging in the center of the ring right in front of Nash. Nash falls backwards on his ass from the surprise. And when he goes to inspect the dummer, Luger sneaks up behind and lifts Nash into the Torture Rack. Nash has no choice but to surrender.

After the match, Lex Luger leaves Nash alone with this macabre doppelganger. Nash tugs at it and it falls to the mat. Nash looks up and scans around and soon we see Sting at the top of the arena right where dummy came from. Nash looks murderous as Sting smirks and walks off into the darkness - message sent as Nitro goes off the air.
