I was raised by my grandparents, and they never let me order wrestling PPVs. BUT there was a channel on the old cable tuner that let me listen to the PPV audio with scrambled visuals, and I happily listened to every WCW, WWF, and ECW PPV like I was listening to a radio broadcast.

 

What I'm saying is, I'd have been planted right by the scrambled TV for this version upcoming version of Spring Stampede. Looking good!

WCW Monday Nitro Live! April Week 3, 1998 - Episode #134– “Savaged”

WCW Monday Nitro opens without a recap or an opening video. Instead the show goes live into the Target Center in Minneapolis where Rowdy Roddy Piper is in the ring. An interview set is set up and Piper introduces his special guest tonight - the WCW World Heavyweight Champion (for thirteen days that is)..Sting. The crowd cheers but the cheers quickly turn to jeers when Piper produces a cardboard cut out of Sting wearing a kids version of the WCW title belt. Piper mocks Sting (including doing a high pitched version of Sting’s voice) as “Sting” confirms that Roddy Piper is a real man. “Sting” tells Piper that Roddy Piper is a better champion and that “Sting” is scared to death of the Hot Rod. Suddenly the lights start flickering but when they come back on Piper is sitting on his bar stool laughing. When Piper begins to “interview” again, the lights flicker and Piper looks scared. Then the lights go out again. When they return, Piper is standing up looking to the sky but Sting, the real Sting, is sitting on the very barstool that Piper was just sitting on.

 

 

Piper turns around, screams and bails from the ring just as Sting charges him. Piper goes running up the aisle to escape the champion.

 

 

Tony, Mike & Larry put over the fact that Rowdy Roddy Piper is scared to death of Sting and promise to start Nitro after this time out.

The announcers put over what we just saw and tell us that tonight Bret the Hitman Hart will be in action against Konnan of the nWo, WCW Television Champion Goldberg is here and in our featured contest Booker T will go one on one against Scott Hall. But we go to the ring for our opening contest here on Nitro.

This all serves to be a distraction as Alex Wright sneaks from under the ring with a chair and blasts Hennig from behind. Wright continues to wallop Hennig with the chair until Malenko gets back into the ring and chases Wright and Rude away. Malenko checks on the man that just defeated him as Nitro goes to commercial.

Monday Nitro returns to a video of a sit down interview that Mike Tenay did with Rick & Scott the Steiner Brothers. The Steiners said that they lost the titles in a tables match and the last year has been a trying time for Rick & Scott, but Ricky is recovering and soon the Steiners will return. And when they return, things will change.

Jericho & Lynn get so close to becoming new tag team champions in this match. G.T.T takes the two for granted early on but soon Jericho and Lynn, making their first outing as a team, are in complete control and keep Devon from getting a tag. Jericho and Lynn use classic tag wrestling and aerial maneuvers to get several close falls. The mistake comes when Lynn holds LoMonaco while Jericho charges but Mark duck’s and Jericho collides with his partner. Hughes throws in a tag belt and LoMonaco slams it into Jericho’s head while the ref is distracted for the 3 count.

After the match we see Barbarian & Meng come out to the ring. The two teams get nose to nose yet again and then pushing and shoving as it is clear that the Faces of Fear want the titles. After refs establish order, James J Dillon comes out on crutches and says that the titles will be on the line at Spring Stampede between G.T.T., the Faces of Fear and the team that was just cheated out of the titles - Jericho & Lynn in a Triangle Match. G.T.T. is incensed at this news.

The Wolfpac runs the show down here and in thirteen days, at Spring Stampede, Bret Hart will be Syxxx’s bitch. Bret tells Syxxx to come down here and say that to his face but Syxxx walks away into the fans.

The girls are scared when suddenly Diamond Dallas Page, Chris Benoit & Mongo run out with chairs. The three run the Nest off with Raven smirking as Page gets his wife the hell out of danger. Benoit & Mongo challenge any of them to a match. Raven says Sick Boy and Riggs are up. The announcers tell us that the impromptu match will be next when Nitro returns. Don’t go anywhere.

This is a wild brawl from four guys that are able to do it. Early on the ref allows the four men to brawl up the aisle where Mongo does a Tombstone onto the floor on Riggs. But during the confusion, Saturn nails Benoit near the ring before sliding over the barricade. This allows Sick Boy to take charge and get some near falls before Benoit made the hot tag to Mongo who cleans house. Soon, Riggs is back in and Mongo nails the Tombstone one more time for a three count.

<b>SCOTT HALL VS BOOKER T</b><span style="font-weight:normal;">

 

The story of this match early on is Scott Hall realizing how good Booker T is and trying to end things early but Booker, ever the babyface, will not stay down. After going for the Outsider’s Edge, Booker is able to slide down and deliver a German Suplex to Scott. From there Booker really starts to take control of this match and nails the Harlem Hangover for a near fall. Scott Hall takes the match back and hits the fall away slam and then the Outsiders Edge. He covers 1...2...Booker T kicks out. When Hall charges to nail Booker again, Booker grabs Hall and delivers a Book End. This brings Randy Savage and Elizabeth running down the ring. Savage gets on the apron and Booker decks the Macho Man. While this is going on, Elizabeth slips Hall a loaded purse, when Booker comes over to grab Scott, Hall nails Booker in the head. Booker slides the purse out of the ring and covers for the 1...2..3.

Savage drops three big elbows before busting Booker open with a chair. The show ends with Macho Man spray painting Booker on the back with the nWo letters in white spray paint. Savage sneers down at his victim looking like a man possessed as WCW Monday Nitro goes off the air.

A tough match for Jericho as Meng just pummels the younger star for most of the match. Once Jericho starts his comeback, Barbarian gets nervous. When Jericho is able to floor Meng with a Superplex and signals to go for the Lionsault, Barbarian slides in and nails Jericho in the face with a big boot. The ref calls for the bell signaling the disqualification.

LoMonaco and Hughes promise to keep these titles in six days on pay-per- view.

Ric Flair says but Texas is a terrific place to bring some sanity back to WCW. Ric promises that he and Arn will be on hand this Sunday at Spring Stampede. And they wink as they walk away. Gene tells us not to go anywhere, when Nitro returns Goldberg is in action. Don’t go anywhere.

A commercial for Spring Stampede airs as Nitro returns from break. The commercial focuses on Sting vs Piper with Kevin Nash lurking in the background wondering if Big Sexy will cash in on his “golden ticket”? WCW/nWo Spring Stampede airs live THIS SUNDAY on pay-per-view.

Tony, Mike & Bobby welcome us to Hour #2, but as soon as they begin to speak we see Mean Gene being brought out by Diamond Dallas Page, Chris Benoit & Mongo.

 

 

They escort him to the ring where Page is seething and pacing in the ring. The three look around for Raven’s Nest but they’re not there. Benoit and Mongo say they are tired of the games with the Nest and last week was the last straw. Page rips the microphone and paces like a crazed man. He says that last week the Nest decided to make all of this personal. Deadly personal. Raven sicced his nutbag group on DDP’s wife? Tonight Kimberly is here, but she is backstage with a fleet of cops….

 

 

 

Raven’s voice is suddenly heard and everyone looks around until Raven’s face is shown on the video screens around the arena. Mongo points towards a screen as Page watches the camera pan back and the entire Nest is with Raven but they’re not in the arena...they’re in front of a big house. Page’s eyes go wide as Raven says that it is too bad that Kimberly is in Arizona and not here in Atlanta. Raven tells us that the house in the background is the home of Kimberly and Page. Raven says that this Sunday at Spring Stampede when the US Title is on the line, yes it's personal - but Raven will be the cause of and will feel Diamond Dallas Page’s pain as Raven rips Page’s most prized possession from his hands. And since Benoit and Mongo want in on the fun? They can have Saturn and Riggs on Sunday.

 

Stevie hands a torch to Raven who lights it. Raven says, since Kimberly is not there - maybe they should take this to another level. Raven hands the torch to the Nest who starts walking towards the house. Raven says the only way to live in the world is to burn it all down. “See you Sunday, Dallas. Quote the Raven, Nevermore.” The video ends as Page, Benoit & Mongo have already bailed from the ring and are racing to the back. Gene is disgusted and throws us to commercial.

Back from the break we see “During the commercial” as Diamond Dallas Page, Kimberly, Chris Benoit & Steve McMichael race toward a car. Kimberly is crying as they power walk to the back. The four hop into the car and it speeds out into the night.

A back and forth match that Dean really schools Wright in, but Dean cannot put Alex away. Wright takes control and seems close to beating the Man of 1,000 Holds until a distraction by Curt Hennig which allows Malenko to nail Wright from behind and lock on the Texas Cloverleaf for the submission victory.

nWo paid advertisement brings us back featuring Syxxx & Nash mocking Bret Hart & Sting. Syxxx says he will prove that Vince McMahon’s patron saint is a fraud this Sunday on PPV. Nash promises that he will be lurking and will be very interested in Piper and Sting.

In the ring Rey Mysterio calls out Eddie Guerrero who finally comes out to the ringside area with his nephew Chavo. Rey challenges Eddie for one more shot this Sunday at the Cruiserweight Title in a ladder match. Eddie laughs it off and says no and begins to walk away. That is when Rey says that he knew Eddie would say no because he is a coward. That cowardice is the reason that Eddie has his nephew doing his dirty work. And that cowardice will be Eddie’s undoing or it will lead to permanent humiliation for Rey Mysterio, because here is the offer that Eddie can’t refuse…

 

Rey Mysterio vs Eddie Guerrero this Sunday in a ladder match for the Cruiserweight Title. And if Rey cannot win, not only will Eddie Guerrero win, but Rey Mysterio will leave WCW.

 

Eddie goes to accept but Chavo speaks to his Uncle and Eddie makes a counter. He says as great is it would be to run Rey out of WCW forever, it will be more fun to make Rey be in Eddie’s debt. So, Eddie will agree to the match but instead of Rey quitting WCW, how about this? When Eddie wins this match and holds onto this title, Rey Mysterio Jr must join La Familia and do whatever Eddie Guerrero demands. From here on out, Rey will be under the control of Eddie Guerrero. Those are the terms. Rey hangs his head but he really has no choice, Rey accepts the terms and the match is made.

Luger and Bret work well as a team early on but, soon Konnan and Syxxx take Luger and start beating him down and cutting Luger off from Bret. After some close near falls, Syxxx goes for the Buzzkiller but Luger reverses out and locks on the Torture Rack. Konnan rushes in and punches Luger in the lower back. Both Luger and Syxxx crawl to their partners and make the tag with Bret cleaning house. Bret goes for the Sharpshooter on Konnan but Syxxx stops it and Luger recovers enough to clothesline Syxxx to the floor and take off after him. Konnan locks the half Boston Crab but Bret is able to power out, flip Konnan over and lock in the Sharpshooter. With Luger keeping Syxxx at bay, Konnan has no choice but to tap out.

Piper starts going on a long silulogy about why Piper is the hero here and how Sting will fall this Sunday at Spring Stampede. Piper says that he doesn’t care if Nash does indeed cash in his so-called “golden ticket”, Piper will beat his ass too.

Nash comes out and says that 1) Kevin Nash has not decided to cash in his golden ticket on Sunday, but if he does - lets get something straight right now. Roddy Piper is not man enough and he does not have the size to do anything against Big Sexy. And let’s make it clear, if Piper or Sting is the World Champion, when Kevin Nash decides to be champion and bring their trophy back to the nWo - there is not a damned thing that anyone can do about it. Kevin Nash says he is the hunter and he will...

 

Just as Piper and Nash look to get close to coming to blows the lights flicker and then cut out entirely. When they return, World Champion Sting is in the ring with bats pointed at both Nash and Piper. Piper, startled, bails from the ring. Nash is more hesitant.

 

 

Sting looks at both men and then at Mean Gene and grabs Gene’s arm. Sting looks at Nash and says “Nash you’re not the hunter...you’re the hunted.” Sting then turns to look at Piper and says “and you? On Sunday, you’ll have to kill me to stop me and if you don’t? Piper….you’re a dead man.”

 

Sting has spoken as both Nash and Piper are equally stunned and worried. Piper and Nash eye each other nervously while Sting hooks himself back up. The World Champion ascends to the heaven’s with Tony Schiavone telling us not to miss Spring Stampede this Sunday as Nitro goes off the air.
