Wow, hadn't realized it had been this long since I've checked in on the diary. Glad you're back from your cold. I'm back from losing my Dad (and the fun of trying to find documents and failing to find a lot of them). And I'd be watching the hell out this on WAVE-3, except I wasn't born until 1975. However I will add that once Jerry Jarrett took over Memphis and Louisville, we got 1-hour wrestling broadcasts at 12/11 central so that 2 pm slot is an hour late. I'd blame it on Dance Fever or Solid Gold, but Disco hasn't hit yet.

AGWA TV taping @ Anaheim Convention Center Arena
June 8, 1971 - Anaheim, California
Attendance - 7,800

spacer.png

Aired the weekend of June 12, 1971 on AGWA Women's Pro Wrestling:

Dark match

spacer.pngVersus 2.pngspacer.png
Jan Vallow defeated Dixie Grant by pinfall following a bodyslam and legdrop.

spacer.pngspacer.pngVersus 2.pngspacer.png
Diane Syverson (with "The Queen" Mae Young) defeated Terri Grayson by pinfall following an airplane spin.

spacer.pngVersus 2.pngspacer.png
Sister Lavender, now competing as a fan favorite (even though retaining her hippie girl gimmick) since the demise of the Dynasty back in March, defeated Jen Scott by pinfall following a facebuster.

spacer.pngVersus 2.pngspacer.png
Former Dynasty leader Tonette Kadrmas, now seemingly leaning to the babyface side as well after returning from the arm injury she suffered during the Dynasty's implosion in March, dominated her match against Yolanda Ruiz before taking the pinfall win with an overhead suplex.

AGWA Television Championship

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Joyce Becker (C) defeated Beverly "The Hammer" Shade by disqualification when Vicki Steppe ran in and attacked Becker as she had Shade pinned after knocking her to the mat with a high knee off the ropes.

NWA North American Women's Championship - Two Out of Three Falls

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Michèle Richard (with Mae Young), now getting the title match she had earned by winning the Mildred Burke Invitational Tournament, made good on her vow to upend Ann Calvello (C) and finally capture the title she had been pursuing since first challenging Joan Weston for the belt in 1967 when she defeated the veteran Calvello, two falls to one, to win the title in the TV main event (joined in progress during the second fall), thereby now making her second only to the Fabulous Moolah in the hierarchy of women's wrestling.

  • First fall - Neither Richard nor Calvello were willing to take chances against the other as they squared off and battled evenly through most of the fall, but Richard quickly seized an opportunity and trapped Calvello in an abdominal stretch, to which Calvello submitted to give Richard the first fall after just over 20 minutes.
  • Second fall - Calvello rebounded from the first fall as she caught Richard in a figure-four leglock; hard as she tried to escape from it, Richard was soon forced to submit to that hold, evening the match at one fall apiece as the pro-Calvello crowd cheered.
  • Third fall - Even though both women were hobbled by the submission holds each had put on the other (Calvello's back and one side affected by Richard's abdominal stretch, Richard's legs affected by Calvello's figure-four), Richard and Calvello were each determined to finish off the other as they tore into each other during the fall.  Calvello took the upper hand at one point and attempted to put the figure-four leglock on Richard again to finish her off, but Richard used her free foot to push Calvello off and into the turnbuckles chest-first, knocking the wind out of the veteran.  Richard then kipped up, whipped Calvello to the ropes and caught her on the rebound with a spinebuster slam, then pinned her for the three-count, stunning the arena crowd with the surprisingly clean pinfall win as Richard got up and raised her arms in the air in victory, then was handed the North American title belt by the referee while Young came into the ring and raised Richard's left arm to hail her client's win.

Aired the weekend of June 19, 1971 on AGWA Women's Pro Wrestling:

Dark match

spacer.pngVersus 2.pngspacer.png
Sylvia Hackney defeated Addie Trent by pinfall following a dropkick.

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngVersus 2.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Georgia Hase & Judy Sowinski (with Mae Young) defeated Samantha Sheridan & Laurie Reid when Hase pinned Reid following a knee lift.

spacer.pngVersus 2.pngspacer.png
Vicki Steppe forced Margo Vincent to submit to an elevated hammerlock.

NWA World Women's Lightweight Championship

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Julie Patrick upended Barbara O'Leary (C) to win the belt when Patrick dropkicked O'Leary off the second turnbuckle to get the title-winning pinfall.

NWA World Women's Tag Team Championship - Two Out of Three Falls

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Renée Martel & Claire Lepage (C) avenged the attack on them by Paula Steele & Patty Stevens (with Mae Young) two weeks ago as they defeated the Queen's Court duo in the TV main event, two falls to one.

  • First fall - Steele powerslammed and pinned Lepage while Stevens ran in to hold off Martel and keep her from breaking up the pin.
  • Second fall - Stevens was counted out after getting double-dropkicked out to ringside by Martel and Lepage.
  • Third fall - Steele was dominating the match in the third fall as she pounded away at Martel when France Gall, whose pre-match attack on her by Steele resulted in Gall's loss of the NWA World Women's Lightweight title to Barbara O'Leary at the final night of Mildred Burke Invitational Tournament V, came to ringside and began berating Steele for the attack and causing her to lose the title because of it.  When Steele spotted Gall and threatened to go out after the slender French beauty and finish what she started against her, Martel seized the opportunity, hooked Steele's arms from behind and fell forward, catching Steele in a backslide pin as the referee moved into position and made the three-count while Lepage ran in to keep Stevens from interfering with the pinfall.  Following the winning pinfall, Martel and Lepage got out to ringside, grabbed their title belts and went to join Gall in celebrating retaining their title as the fans cheered while Young went into the ring and protested in vain over Steele getting distracted to cause the pinfall loss, which the referee disregarded as he pointed out that France did not physically interfere in the match, while an irate Steele kicked at the bottom rope and made threats against Martel, Lepage and Gall, who taunted the burly heel and retorted that the pinfall loss served her right for attacking Gall in the first place.

Post-taping dark match
NWA United States Women's Championship

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Judy Arnold (C) defeated Baby Rocco (with Mae Young) by disqualification when Michèle Richard ran into the ring and attacked Arnold while she had Rocco tied up in a spinning toehold; Ann Calvello, armed with a folding chair, ran in post-match to even the sides and cleared Richard out.

I do not remember Stella Mae as I started watching wrestling in '84 in earnest and WCCW didn't appear on local TV in Vegas until '85..

Did watch her debut, though, on WCCW after reading your post.

She was a real foul mouth! 😀

The Garvin-Val relationship I only found out about when reading up on Val before making her a personality on my AWA shows.

Thanks to the availability of AGWA Women's Pro Wrestling in the Kansas City metropolitan area (via WDAF-TV, on the Missouri side of the metroplex) and its resulting popularity with KC wrestling fans (who watched it alongside local NWA member Central States Wrestling's TV show All-Star Wrestling, with which the AGWA program was carried as a companion show there), Renée Martel and several other AGWA stars would make their Kansas City debuts with CSW in short order...

In her home office at her estate in Columbia, Fabulous Moolah was going over some business papers during a few days off from the ring after returning home following another WWWF tour, but she also had other things on her mind that were distracting her from her work and she was less than pleased about it.  She was still stewing over those mental distractions when Donna Christanello came into her office to check on her.  "Hey Lillian, the girls are still waiting for you out at the ring to start another training session," Donna said as she came in and saw Moolah still at her desk.

When she got no answer from Moolah other than a brief, distracted-sounding grunt, Donna, figuring Moolah had her head in her work, decided to try something different to get her attention.  "Hey Lillian, Burt Reynolds just came to the estate in a limo and he asked about flying you out to Hollywood with him for a movie premiere," she said to her mentor and boss.  When she again got no answer from Moolah beyond another brief grunt, Donna decided to go for the jugular.  "Lillian, I just got word from the girls that they're all going on strike for more pay," she then said.

"Huh...what?!" Moolah said as she turned in her desk chair, Donna's last comment having finally caught her attention.  "The girls are doin' what?!"

"Gotcha," Donna quipped with a laugh.  "You were so wrapped up in your work, I had to try something to get your attention."

"Darlin', do me a favor, okay - don't gimme a heart attack by sayin' stuff like that," Moolah said in response.  "What's up that y'all needed to get my attention?"

"The girls are waiting for you out at the ring in the barn," Donna reported.  "They're all geared up to go for another session."

"Ah, well - you and Toni take care of that, okay?" Moolah said.  "I got a lot of stuff on the desk to take care of right now and I got stuff on my mind too."

"Okay, wait - by 'stuff on your mind', I hope you don't mean you're still stewing about Renée Martel and that tag team ti—" Donna started to say, but Moolah cut her off.

"Don't—please, don't say it," Moolah interrupted, not wanting to be given another reminder of the continued success her archrival Renée was having with the NWA World Women's Tag Team Championship since first winning it back in March.  "And no, that's not what's on my mind right now."

"Okay, so what is on your mind then?" Donna asked.

"It's the new business I've been givin' to the Vachon brothers up in Montreal ever since they started their own company back in May to compete with Johnny Rougeau," Moolah said.  "When I got wind of it, I made an offer to them to send some of the girls up to wrestle for the Vachons from time to time, to give some competition to the girls' division Rougeau has in his promotion and - well, just stir things up up that way."

"And how's that going?" Donna then asked.

"In exchange for booking my girls out to them, I asked the Vachons about sendin' their sister Vivian down here to wrestle for me," Moolah said.

"And?" Donna wondered.

"She's with us now, isn't she?" Moolah said with a grin, gaining some satisfaction over poaching Vivian from Mildred Burke's group of wrestlers.  "Meanwhile, the Vachons' first event with my girls wrestlin' for them up in Montreal went pretty well for them - they drew a couple of thousand or so when Betty* and Mahala** went up to face the Sisters of Love last month.  Not a bad number for a promotion less than three months old."

"True, but from what I've been hearing, Rougeau's still drawing the bigger numbers so far," Donna pointed out, "and Rougeau has the advantage of using Quebec girls in his girls' division.  They're trained very well from what I also heard and they've been getting rave reviews, especially the ones appearing for Mildred Burke when they go wrestle for her."

"Oh, please, don't remind me," Moolah quipped.  "Those Quebec girls - especially that Martel girl - pretty much kicked my ass when I went against them, same as the Japanese girls when I went to Japan, that's why I had to get dirty against them.  I also really wasn't happy when Martel won that tag team tournament Burke held back in March."

"Which I know you weren't happy about because the NWA decided to recognize the winners of that tournament as—" Donna began to say.

"NO!" Moolah snapped tersely, cutting Donna off again.  "Toni and Patti are still the real champions, not those two impostors!  Nobody's gonna tell me otherwise, not even old man Muchnick!"

"Even though Muchnick told you to stop claiming Toni and Patti as the 'real' champions back in April after he got wind of what you were doing?" Donna said matter-of-factly.  "Lillian, you gotta face the facts - the NWA recognizes Martel and her partner as the champions, not Toni and Patti.  They didn't like that you wouldn't let other teams outside our group challenge for the belts, that's why your claim to the belts got revoked and given to Burke instead.  Lipping off at Muchnick for his stripping recognition of your claim didn't help your case either."

As she listened to Donna's lecture about the NWA World Women's Tag Team title, a thought crossed Moolah's mind.  "Okay, okay, I get it," she then said to Donna.  "Just wonderin', is Paula out at the trainin' ring?"

"She was when I left to come here," Donna said.  "You need her?"

"Yeah, go get her and send her over here," Moolah replied, sending Donna on her way.

A few minutes later, Paula Kaye arrived at Moolah's office.  "Hey Lillian, you wanted to see me?" she asked as she stepped through the doorway.

"Sure did, darlin'," Moolah said after turning around in her desk chair.  "You remember the first time you wrestled up in Montreal?"

"Sure, that was a couple of years ago," Paula replied.  "Lost against some girl named Julie somethin' or other when you sent me up to Johnny Rougeau."

"Listen, how'd you like to head up to Montreal again?" Moolah then asked.

"Yeah, I'd heard you were supplyin' to the Vachon brothers up that way now," Paula said.  "You sendin' me up to wrestle for them?"

"Actually, no, darlin' - I got a different plan," Moolah said.  "I'm gonna get in touch with Rougeau instead and see about bookin' you there," she added as a devilish grin crossed her face, related to the plan she had in mind...

Before the Forum supercard results get posted (and to allow time for any further predictions to be made), Renée Martel and Claire Lepage get interviewed on the July 31 edition of Superstars of the Mat regarding their upcoming match against Paula Kaye and Kitty Adams (they also did a similar interview in French for Sur le Matelas when that show aired that same weekend):

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

INTERVIEWER:  This coming Monday night, August 2, All-Star Wrestling returns to the Montreal Forum for a star-studded night of wrestling action, with a bell time of 7:30 PM.  In the main event, Johnny Rougeau will challenge for the World Heavyweight Championship held by the mysterious masked Mr. X; in the co-main event, Jacques Rougeau will take on the notorious Abdullah the Butcher in a match to determine a number-one contender for the Canadian Heavyweight Championship; the Canadian Champion himself, Marcel Martel, will defend his title against the Cuban revolutionary, Fidel Castillo, who will be accompanied by his manager, Eddie "The Brain" Creatchman; Michèle Richard will defend her North American Women's title against former champion Ann Calvello; and the team of Paula Kaye and Kitty Adams will challenge for the World Women's Tag Team Championship held by my guests at this time, Renée Martel and Claire Lepage.  (Martel and Lepage come into the scene)  Claire, you and Renée have a strong challenge ahead of you from two ladies with notorious reputations in the sport.

CLAIRE LEPAGE:  You're right, ______, Paula Kaye and Kitty Adams have reputations in wrestling, for being two of the dirtiest fighters in this sport.  Neither of us have ever faced either of them in the ring, but we've talked with those who've faced them and they told us what kind of wrestlers Kaye and Adams really are in the ring - and a friend of ours, Julie Painchaud, once fought Kaye in Montreal a couple of years ago.  Julie won that match, but it didn't come easy for her because Kaye had to cheat her way through that match and she even used a weapon again Julie a couple of times in the match, so she knows from experience what Kaye's all about and we'll know what to expect from her when we get her and Adams in the ring.

INTERVIEWER:  And Renée, you and Claire also found out something else of interest about those two.

RENÉE MARTEL:  We sure did - we found out that Kaye and Adams are both trainees of the Fabulous Moolah.  It's bad enough that those two are dirty fighters like Claire said, but knowing that Moolah taught them what they know about fighting dirty in the ring, that makes it a whole lot worse.  Because of that, Claire and I are going to have to be on our guards when we step in the ring against them on Monday night, because when we face them, it'll be almost like facing Moolah herself - and Claire and I both know it from experience from each of us facing Moolah in the past.

INTERVIEWER:  We also learned from a previous pre-taped interview sent by Kaye and Adams that aired here last week that they're determined to not only win the World Women's Tag Team belts from you, they intend to take the belts and bring them back to Moolah for her to claim.

MARTEL:  That's right, they said it themselves - and the reason they said it is because of something we found out, that Moolah's been going around for the last while claiming that her other girls, Toni Rose and Patti Neilson, are the "real" champions, not me and Claire.  Well, if that's so, Moolah, then why were you and your girls stripped of that recognition as the champions by the National Wrestling Alliance - and why did the NWA put on a tournament for the belts, hosted by Mildred Burke and which Claire and I won?  Ah, that's right, Moolah - it's because you wouldn't allow anyone from outside of your circle to challenge for the belts!  You were basically holding the title hostage, Moolah, while your girls were acting as closet champions and defending the belts only against whoever Moolah felt like allowing to make challenges, and the NWA saw that and told you to start allowing other teams to challenge for the title, but you refused to listen and you ignored their warning, so you paid the price when the NWA stripped you and your girls of the belts.

LEPAGE:  And unlike you and your girls, Moolah, ever since Renée and I won the title, we've been fighting champions and we defend our belts against any team looking for a shot against our title - and that includes any team under Moolah's control.  If Kaye and Adams want a crack at our belts, they're welcome to try, but they're going to be in for a fight against us on Monday night at the Forum and Renée and I are going to send them back to Moolah empty-handed because we don't intend for our title to get taken hostage by Moolah like it was when she controlled the title before - and Moolah, you and your girls can take that to the bank!

INTERVIEWER:  Alright, thank you both, Renée and Claire - so fans, mark that date on your calendars if you haven't done so already, it's this Monday night, August 2 at the Forum in Montreal as Renée Martel and Claire Lepage defend their World Women's Tag Team title against Paula Kaye and Kitty Adams!  Tickets are on sale at the Forum and Paul Sauvé Arena box offices and at selected retail outlets around the Montreal area, so make sure to get yours while they're still available!  More action coming your way right after these messages!

Eddie Auger defeated Ben Sharkey by pinfall.

Antonio Baillargeon defeated Del Skinner by pinfall following a flying dropkick.

Raymond Rougeau defeated Gerry Gosselin by submission with a sleeperhold.

Gino Brito and Michel "Le Justice" Dubois (with Eddie "The Brain" Creatchman) were both counted out while brawling outside the ring.

NWA North American Women's Championship

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Michèle Richard (C) left her title defence against challenger and former champion Ann Calvello with the belt still around her waist, even though Calvello gave the champion all she could ask for and more, when Calvello was disqualified for accidentally clotheslining the referee after Richard, the intended target of the clothesline, ducked down.  Despite the controversial ending, Richard and Calvello were nowhere near done with each other as they continued brawling around ringside and back up the aisle toward the locker room area while arena security and other referees tried in vain to separate them.

ASW Canadian Heavyweight Championship

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Marcel Martel (C) fended off attempted interference by Fidel Castillo's manager Eddie Creatchman late in the match after battling back against Castillo before putting the figure-four leglock on the Cuban grappler, who held on for a few moments before eventually giving up, giving Martel the title-retaining win by submission.  As Martel was getting the Canadian title belt handed to him by the referee, however, Michel Dubois ran out to the ring and attacked the champion, leading to a two-on-one when Creatchman joined in the attack until Gino Brito came from the locker rooms and ran in to go after Dubois, enabling Martel to fight off Creatchman as the fan favorites ran Creatchman and his men out of the ring.

NWA World Women's Tag Team Championship - Two Out of Three Falls

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Renée Martel & Claire Lepage (C) were set to take on the rulebreaking Fabulous Moolah-trained duo of Paula Kaye & Kitty Adams, and would retain their belts as they won the match, two falls to one, when Kaye and Adams were disqualified.

⦁    First fall - Both teams came into the ring confident, but it was the scientific team of Martel and Lepage which excelled in the first stanza when Lepage scored the pin on Adams after flattening her with a flying bodypress.
⦁    Second fall - Kaye and Adams, who each made reputations for their illegal tactics (as taught to them by Moolah), poured them onto Renée and Claire during the fall with doubleteaming, kicking and punching, but the way the sly challengers evened things up was when Kaye, taking advantage of a referee distraction by Adams, made use of an illegal foreign object to knock Lepage loopy and pin her, putting the heels only one fall away from winning the coveted title.
⦁    Third fall - Martel surprised everyone in the third fall by recovering immediately from a vicious doubleteaming attack by Kaye and Adams and rallied against the heel duo before catching Adams in a sleeper - but while the referee was occupied monitoring the hold, Kaye, over in her team's corner, inserted another foreign object into the kneepad on her right knee, then waited for her moment.  Back in the ring, just as Adams was going into dreamland thanks to Martel's sleeperhold, Kaye then struck as she ran into the ring and drove her right knee with the foreign object-loaded kneepad hard into Renée's left side, targeting the ribs and forcing Renée to release the sleeperhold.  Lepage, who saw Kaye stuff the object into her kneepad moments earlier, ran in and went after Kaye, but Kaye, who was prepared for any attempted intervention, drilled Claire with a punch and knocked her to the mat before turning her attention back to Martel while Adams, who managed to shake off the effects of the sleeperhold, stomped on Lepage, then picked her up and threw her through the ropes and out of the ring before joining Kaye in double-teaming on Martel again.  As Kaye and Adams each grabbed an arm on Martel to keep her from escaping, Kaye repeatedly drove her right knee into Renée's left side while Adams drove her right knee twice into Renée's abdomen to knock the wind out of her, making it harder for Renée to scream in pain as she kept getting hit by Kaye's weapon-aided hard knee strikes to her ribs, forcing her down to her knees.  As the fans began reacting negatively to the heels' vicious attack on Martel with loud boos and jeering, the referee quickly disqualified Kaye and Adams when they ignored his five-count on them, then he tried to force Adams to let go, only for Kaye to run over and kick the referee in the stomach with the point of her boot, then clobbered him and sent him to the mat as well before she went back to attacking Renée's ribs with more knee strikes.

When Lepage tried to get back into the ring, Adams, who saw her coming, ran over and knocked Claire back out to ringside before she returned to helping Kaye to double-team Martel, who was clearly in distress by this point as the fans began to get agitated over the attack and were almost on the verge of rioting - but help soon came when Ann Calvello, armed with a hockey stick obtained from the locker rooms, ran out to the ring and cleared Kaye and Adams out, sending the heels (who were forced to drop Renée to the mat when they say Calvello coming) running out to ringside as Calvello swung the stick at them.  Moments later, Marcel Martel, Renée's father, also ran out to the ring to check on his daughter and her condition while Calvello, still armed with the hockey stick, kept a sharp eye on Kaye and Adams while daring them to come back in; trouble soon broke out at ringside as several angry fans began pelting Kaye and Adams with crumpled-up popcorn bags and drink cups, causing the heels to turn on the ringside fans nearby and attack them as well as fights broke out at ringside before arena security were forced to intervene and break up the fights between the heel duo and the angry fans, some of which cursed out Kaye and Adams as they were escorted back to the locker room area by several security guards.  Soon after, a first aid technician came to the ring to check on Renée, who was still down on the mat and appeared to be injured, while Lepage also came back into the ring to check on her friend and tag team partner out of concern*.

Winner to get Canadian Heavyweight title shot

Following a brief intermission to allow the fans to cool down in the wake of the previous match, Jacques Rougeau and Abdullah the Butcher fought to a no-contest when a brawl between both wrestlers got out of control, forcing the referee to disqualify both Jacques and Abdullah; as a result, no top contender for the Canadian title was decided.

ASW World Heavyweight Championship

spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png
Johnny Rougeau used a sleeperhold on Mr. X (C) (with Eddie Creatchman) while a substitute referee checked on X after the original match referee was knocked down in a collision at one point after X whipped Rougeau into him; when X's arm fell three times during the check, the substitute ref called for the bell and declared Rougeau the winner and new champion, then got the World title belt to hand over to him as the crowd cheered in celebration.  Moments later, however, the original ref came to and overruled the decision, declaring that while Rougeau had indeed won the match, it was only by disqualification due to X whipping Rougeau into him; as a result, X retained the title on the technicality as a gloating Creatchman snatched the belt away and handed it back to the revived X, who raised it above his head to the chagrin of the fans.

* A couple of followup posts (one a behind-the-scenes post, the other a TV interview post), dealing with the ramifications from the outcome of the Renée/Claire vs. Kaye/Adams match (in what basically amounted to a shoot attack by Kaye and Adams on Renée), will be posted in the next little while - and the Fabulous Moolah will be involved.
