World Championship Wrestling

January Week 2 1983

Announcer: Gordon Solie

Interview

Gordon Solie welcomes us to Georgia Championship Wrestling. He introduces the NWA World Champion Ric Flair who has the studio audience in hysterics. He says he's here to confront Butch Reed after Reed was talking smack and stating his title credentials at a midweek 'spot show'. You can't call out the 'Nature Boy' and get away with it!

Grade: 83

Chief Joe Lightfoot vs Butch Reed

Reed has an impressive array of powerhouse moves and slams to rough up opponents of any credentials and Lightfoot never stood a chance. An impressive Gorilla Press Slam picks up the win.

Winner: Butch Reed

Rating: 42

Post-Match Interview

Reed, having barely broken a sweat or out of breath, joins Solie and Flair at the desk and instantly gets in the face of the World Champion. Flair retorts that Reed isn't fit to shine his shoes but presents an 'opportunity' since he isn't getting a title shot. In 2 weeks he'll put up his three thousand dollar gold rolex and two thousand dollars in cash up against Reed. If Reed wins he gets the goods and a future title shot. If he loses, he can't challenge for the title whilst Flair is champion. Reed agrees!

Rating: 79

Interview

After the break Mr. Solie is joined by Bruno Sammartino Jr. and The Masked Superstar. Solie recaps a brutal and unexpected assault by Zybyzsko on Bruno Jr. at a midweek show to explain the plaster on the youngsters head. Superstar says that he isn't in the interest of helping others normally but won't stand by while Zybyzsko continues to sully the good Sammartino name. He's got the back of Jr.

Rating: 39

Thunderbolt Patterson vs The Iron Sheik (Time-Limit Challenge)

Thunderbolt is an 18-year veteran of the game with multiple title reigns including tag reigns with Tommy Rich, Wahoo McDaniel and Jerry Brisco among others but he isn't as spritely as he once was and once Sheik locks in his camel clutch few, if any, survive. Sheik picks up the submission victory.

Winner: The Iron Sheik

Rating: 50

Paul Orndorff vs Terry Gibbs (Time-limit Challenge)

Gibbs isn't as experienced as Patterson but has youth on his side and presented a different challenge in this second time-limit oriented affair. Orndorff put the work in and, despite not knowing what Sheik's time was yet, had a target to work towards and ended things with a stiff lariat and the 3-count.

Winner: Paul Orndorff

Rating: 53

Post-Match Interview/Announcement

Mr. Solie stands at the desk in the middle of Sheik and Orndorff with the official times. The Iron Sheik won his match in a time of 6:05. Paul Orndorff won his in a time of 6:09 which grants Sheik a shot at the National title. Orndorff offers to shake the hand of his opponent but Sheik slaps it away and walks off touting his greatness.

Rating: 66

Mr. Solie recap segment

Gordon stands at the announce desk and recaps, with minimal highlights, a night of action recently at Gainesville which included action with GCW regulars Buzz Sawyer & Ole Anderson, Larry Zybyzsko, Tommy Rich as well as the likes of Dick Slater and Paul Ellering.

Rating: 60 [/Quote]

Bill Dromo & Ken Wayne vs The Moondogs

Rex and Spot are a bulky and formidable heavyweight duo for any team to come up against. Dromo & Wayne had no chance here and The Moondogs win here in swift succession.

Winners: The Moondogs

Rating: 44

Post-Match Interview

Rex & Spot cut a wild and manic promo that resembles something along the lines of them wanting the vacant National Tag Titles and they'll be here next week if The Armstrongs wish to continue staking their claim.

Rating: 37

Hype Video Package

We're then treated to a highlights package to Pink Floyds

of Jake Roberts decimating opponents and looking terrific in the process.

Rating: 67

Jake Roberts vs Brian Blair

Brian Blair stands ready in the ring to take on the massive 6'6 frame of Jake Roberts. Blair remains competitive in the early going but eventually Roberts' guile and strength prove too much and wins his debut in very convincing fashion with a running knee strike.

Winner: Jake Roberts

Rating: 64

Interview

Dusty Rhodes appears to the delight of the studio audience and in chatting with Mr. Solie calls out Murdoch for his rudeness and brushing him off last week. Murdoch appears but again dismisses Dusty with Murdoch saying he's simply accompanying his friend Dick Slater to ringside.

Rating: 74

Ricky Rude vs Dick Slater

Ricky Rude is a 24-year old rookie who already looks like he may have a promising future and he gave it as well as he could here but 'Dirty Dick' is named for such a reason and is one of the nastiest brawlers in the game but it was his snug sleeperhold that ended things here with the rookie unable to escape and submitting.

Winner: Dick Slater

Rating: 60

Post-Match Shenanigans

Slater knocks over Mr Solie's desk and claims he was told that Georgia was the home of 'tough guys' that couldn't be found in the Mid-Atlantic but he's unimpressed and that he and Murdoch could tear this place to the ground if they so desired just like he's doing back with Crockett. He then got in the face of Rhodes and knocked the cap off Dusty's head but he was surprised with the arrival of Roddy Piper! An all-out brawl took place across the studio involving all four men as Piper appeared to be out for blood on Slater. The brawl continued as Mr. Solie ended the broadcast.
