The broadcast for the sixth installment of Wrestling at the Ryan hits the airwaves in a slightly different fashion than the previous five. We still have our crowdshot after the opening titles, but instead of going to the announce desk with Patrick and Sue, we instead go to the ring where all five members of The Academy as well as the Academy’s leader, Professor Jim King are all standing in the center of the ring. All five members of The Academy are wearing championship gold. Juggernaut Jones, Jack Pryde, and Phil Anders are wearing the COTT World Six-Man Championships and The Brute Squad has the MWCW National Tag Team Championships. Professor Jim King looks beside himself with happiness as he lifts the microphone to his lips.

King, “Hello everyone and welcome to another exciting edition of Wrestling at the Ryan featuring the hottest collection of professional wrestlers anywhere in America, The Academy.”

Professor King takes a dramatic pause for the boos to come in.

King, “That’s right. You can look at any company in America, heck, in all of North America and in all of wrestling and you won’t find a single collective that is as successful right now as The Academy. We are draped in championships. We have the best trio in wrestling. We have the National Tag Team Champions. We are smarter than the competition, we are better trained than the competition. We have better nutrition. We are the peak of athletic performance. We are the peak of wrestling intellect and this is just the beginning, isn’t it Jack?”

King passes the microphone to Jack Pryde.

Pryde, “That’s right Professor. Because of you and our own natural talents, we are all well oiled machine. We know how to win. We know the weaknesses of all our opponents, and we know how to exploit them. We are ready for prime time.”

Phil Anders takes the microphone from Jack.

Anders, “We’re the studs of professional wrestling. We’re who you want if you want championship pedigree. If you want the best, you better call us. We’re worth the money it takes to bring us to your town.”

Professor King takes the microphone back.

King, “Professional wrestling has always been run by men who aren’t afraid to take what they want. Men who see an opportunity and snatch it for themselves. That’s what the Academy is doing. We are taking over professional wrestling one championship at a time and Roger. You’re the National Heavyweight Champion… But only for now. We’re coming for you. We’re coming to control MWCW.”

The Academy exits the ring and now we go to the announce desk.

We settle on Patrick Santini and Sue Danes.

Santini, “We apologize for that unscheduled segment. The Academy was not supposed to start the show but as you can see, they are very full of themselves.”

Danes, “They are full of themselves, but you have to give them some credit. They are all champions. They are the World Six-Man Champions. They are the National Tag Team Champions. I don’t think we have to like them, but we do have to acknowledge that they are successful.”

Santini, “They’ve been known to use that outside interference to win though.”

Danes, “I don’t like their means anymore than you do, Patrick, but if the referee doesn’t catch it, there’s nothing I can do. That’s the way it works.”

Santini, “Be that as it may… We have a full show for you tonight. El Bandido Jr takes on War Piece in our opening contest which will be coming to you just after the break.”

War Piece vs. El Bandido Jr

We come back from commercial break with the opening contest. Last week, War Piece made his MWCW debut in a singles contest against Juggernaut Jones. That was a one-sided affair that didn’t really allow War Piece to gt any offense. The match here with El Bandido Jr. was a fast-paced affair. War Piece didn’t dominate, or even come close to winning, but he did get to show a little bit more of his offensive capabilities before he ate the Hijack Suplex and lost to El Bandido Jr.

In a bout that had decent wrestling but little heat, El Bandido Jr defeated War Piece in 5:49 by pinfall with a Hijack Suplex.

We go backstage where Mya Catalan is standing by with Ashley Keith.

Catalan, “I’m joined at this time by Ashley Keith. Ashley, last week you showed up unannounced and uninvited and attacked the National Women’s Champion Danielle Sweetheart –”

Mya is cut off by Ashley.

Keith, “I was not uninvited. Did Danielle Sweetheart send open contracts around the world for women to be able to come to MWCW and challenge her for the National Women’s Title.”

Catalan, “I believe she did.”

Keith, “That’s right sweetheart, she did. And do you know what I did? I signed one of those contracts.”

Catalan, “Wait. You did?”

Keith, “I sure did. I’ve got myself a guaranteed opportunity now at the National Women’s Championship. I’ve watched every episode of Wrestling at the Ryan. I’ve heard everything Danielle Sweetheart has said. I’ve heard the way she’s called herself the best women’s wrestler on the planet. That’s quite the statement to make, especially when she’s never been in the ring with me. She calls herself the Queen of Hearts and the Real Queen of Wrestling and that’s cute and it looks good on a t-shirt, but standing in front of you, Mya Catalan, is the real queen of wrestling. This is my world and I’ve let Danielle Sweetheart live in it but it is time for the fairy tale to come to an end. Danielle, I’ll see you soon.”

St. Louis' Most Wanted & Harvey Robbinfield vs. The National Guard

Our next match pits the National Guard, who made their unsuccessful debut last week against St. Louis’ Most Wanted – who was successful in their debut, and “The Omega Man” Harvey Robbinfield. Harvey took the heat from the National Guard to try to build some sympathy and anticipation for the tag to the two big men. The comeback was done by Jake Jackson, who used his bulk and power to bump the National Guard all over the ring. The tag to Papa Swoll came and Swoll hit his Boom Shakalaka on Bubba West and that was all she wrote.

In a bout that had decent wrestling but didn't have much heat, Harvey Robbinfield and St. Louis' Most Wanted defeated The National Guard (The Silencer, Desert Storm and Sgt. Bubba Lee West) in 7:49 when Papa Swoll pinned Sgt. Bubba Lee West with a Boom Shakalaka.

At the conclusion of the match, Papa Swoll calls for a microphone. Mya Catalan hands it to him but does not enter the ring.

Swoll, “I really shouldn’t be doing this, I know there are a couple matches left in the show and time is important, but man, me and Big Jake and Harvey are feeling good. We’re feeling real good. It’s been great to be here in MWCW and get these big wins the last two weeks.”

Jackson takes the microphone from Swoll.

Jackson, “That’s right. Last week we let everybody know that we got aspirations on being National Tag Team Champions, but with big Harvey, the Omega Man, we’ve also got our eyes those World Six-Man Titles. “

Harvey didn’t say anything, he just nodded his head in agreement and the three men left and we go to commercial break.

Peta vs. Marjorie Oxford

We come back from commercial break on Peta’s entrance. The young Blackfoot wrestler from Canada came out with a lot of fire. Marjorie Oxford, the daughter of legendary tag wrestler Robert Oxford. The match was a good standard heel-babyface match. Peta got the early shine on Marjorie before Oxford used a handful of hair to steal the advantage and get some good solid, technical-minded heat. She used a particularly nasty backbreaker that got her a near fall.  Peta made a big comeback, lots of back elbows and a big back body drop that Marjorie Oxford almost touched the lights on the bump. Peta hit her Soo [brainbuster DDT] and got the victory.

In a decent match, Peta defeated Marjorie Oxford in 6:52 by pinfall with a Soo.

Roger Monteiro.pngAce Youngblood.pngWild Red Stallion.pngMalachi Thunderbird.pngMicah Thunderbird.png

We go backstage to the First Nation’s locker room. All five members of The First Nation, none of whom are wrestling on tonight’s broadcast. Roger Monterio, the National Heavyweight Champion, is in the front and center. He’s flanked on either side by Ace Youngblood and Wild Red Stallion with the Thunderbird brothers behind him.

Monteiro, “We had the goal of being the top group in MWCW and in wrestling. The goal of having the National Heavyweight, Tag Team, and World Six-Man Championships among all of the other goals we have. We want to be the top attraction all over the world. We know we can be. We know that we have the talent, the ability, and the work ethic to do so.  We came up short last week for the National Tag Team title tournament. That happens. Sometimes it’s not your night, we’re not going to cry over a loss or say it’s unfair. No. The Thunderbirds are better than that and we are better than that. We’re going to collect ourselves, we’re going to study the footage and we’re going to put ourselves back in positions to keep winning more and more gold. We promise all of our fans that in the coming months, you’re going to see all five of us draped in championships.”

Luis Montero Jr. vs. Disturbed

We come back from commercial break with a classic lucha-style match. Luis Montero Jr. is one of the two luchadors in MWCW who are getting a push (El Bandido Jr. being the other). Montero is as classic of a luchador as you’re likely to find. It’s in his blood. For what it’s worth, he’s also become an integral part of the MWCW staff and is said to be the lead agent/producer. Disturbed, the Canadian luchador who made his name in OLLIE but has been touring WLW recently. With both of them having been in OLLIE for so long, Montero and Disturbed had a great back and forth contest that ended when Montero made Disturbed submit to a Texas Cloverleaf.

In a bout that had decent wrestling but little heat, Luis Montero Jr defeated Disturbed in 7:11 by submission.

Coco Malloy vs. Steffi Chee

We come out of the last commercial break for the main event – which pits the young Coco Malloy against Steffi Chee. The veteran Chee is clearly looking to get back on track but also to establish that she should be the champion and not Danielle Sweetheart. Chee controlled most of the match. Her offense was targetted on the neck and Coco Malloy sold her ass off for the veteran. The comeback from Malloy was big and full of energy but then Chee cut her off again and looked like she was about to put her away when Coco slipped out and rolled Chee up for the surprising victory.

In a decent match, Coco Malloy defeated Steffi Chee in 6:09 by pinfall with a quick roll up.

We come out of the opening titles with another wide shot of the crowd that has become a staple of the MWCW production team. We slide over the crowd, around the people in the front row and then come to rest at the broadcast table where Patrick Santini and Sue Danes are waiting to welcome us to the seventh episode of Wrestling at the Ryan.

Santini, “Hello and welcome back to Griffin Sports Mid West for another exciting edition of Wrestling at the Ryan. I’m Patrick Santini and I’m joined with, as always, my broadcast partner Sue Danes. We have a big night of professional wrestling planned for this evening. We see the Griffin Sports Mid West debut of Rachel Watkins and Alice Armstrong. Both women are highly touted prospects for the future and I can’t wait to see what they can do.  Harvey Robbinfield takes on Daredevil Aero in what should be a very good contest between two young men looking to build momentum in their MWCW careers. The Diamond Dogs, a highly successful Australian duo that have won championships in Oceania and Japan are making their North American debut as they take on The Prime Studs and in our main event, Ashley Keith makes her in ring debut in MWCW as she takes on Skye Hermosa. That’s a lot of action tonight Sue, what are you most looking forward to?”

Danes, “That’s a great question. I am really curious to see what’s going to happen between Rachel Watkins and Alice Armstrong. Armstrong is a former standout track and field star from the University of Nebraska. She’s big and strong and Watkins is significantly smaller but I’ve seen some footage of her and she could be a shining star in our women’s division. We know Ashley Keith has a future National Women’s title shot but if Skye Hermosa can upset Keith tonight, she could also earn herself a title shot. There’s so much to be excited about tonight.”

Santini, “There certainly is, Sue. So let’s go to the ring where Mya Catalan is ready to introduce our first contest.”

"The Rainbow" Rachel Watkins vs. "Big Al" Alice Armstrong

Alice Armstrong was out first. She’s got some name value in the Mid-West because of her time at the University of Nebraska. Watkins was out second and came out with a whole lot of energy, clearly trying to make sure she was getting the babyface reaction. There was a significant size difference in the match, with Alice having a seven inch height advantage and over thirty pounds in weight difference. Armstrong controlled the contest with simple, but effective power moves. Watkins fought from underneath for the entire match and it built to a fiery comeback where Armstrong bounced around the ring for her. Watkins went to the top rope and went for a big crossbody, but it was countered into an Armstrong Slam for the victory for Alice.

In a bout that had a decent reaction from the crowd but sub-par wrestling, Alice Armstrong defeated Rachel Watkins in 6:14 by pinfall with an Armstrong Slam.

We come back from a commercial break and Mya Catalan is standing in the ring with St. Louis’ Most Wanted. The two big men are all smiles.

Catalan, “I’m joined here in the ring by Papa Swoll and Jake Jackson, St. Louis’ Most Wanted. Gentlemen, since debuting in MWCW a few weeks ago you have built a lot of momentum and have yet to be defeated either here on Wrestling at the Ryan or on MWCW Live. How does this momentum feel?”

Swoll, “It feels great. It feels exactly how me and big Jake planned it to be. We know we have what it takes to be champions here in Midwest Championship Wrestling and in the Confederation of the Territories. We know we can be National Tag Team Champions or with our boy Harvey who is about to whoop on Daredevil Aero, the COTT World Six-Man Champions. Hell, maybe we’ll challenge for the World Tag Team Titles too. Me and Jake, we’re going to be champions sooner rather than later.”

Jackson, “Yes we are. We’re loving life here in St. Louis and here in Midwest Championship Wrestling. We’re having a blast, Mya, and we’re going to keep having a blast and we know it’s only a matter of time. We know as soon as we get a chance to challenge for some titles, we’re going to win some titles. Until then, we’re going to keep winning matches. We’re going to keep showing people exactly what we can do. “

Catalan, “Thank you for your time, gentlemen. We’re going to take a quick commercial break and then we will back for our next match.”

Aero got enough offense in to not be squashed and allow Robbinfield to sell, but the match was Robbinfield’s. He hit his Omega Driver to get the win.

We head backstage to where Mya Catalan is standing by with National Heavyweight Champion, Roger Monteiro.  Monteiro is wearing a First Nation tank top and his left shoulder is heavily taped up.

Catalan, “I’m joined at this time by National Heavyweight Champion, Roger Monteiro. First, Roger, let me ask about your shoulder. What happened?”

Monteiro, “Just a minor injury. Nothing to cry about, nothing that’s going to keep me from fulfilling my obligations as National Heavyweight Champion.”

Catalan, “Well that’s good. You’ve recently defended your championship at an MWCW Live Event against Charlie Thatcher, is that where you injured your shoulder?”

Monteiro, “Yes it is, but I don’t want to focus on my injury. I want to focus on how I’ve been a fighting champion, just like I promised. How I’m not running from anyone. How I show up night in and night out because that’s what a champion does. It doesn’t matter if I’m banged up, we’re all banged up. It doesn’t matter if I’ve got to catch a flight from Japan to get back here. This is what I signed up for, it’s what I’ve waited my whole professional career for. I’ve spent my entire career working to get here, working to get to the top of the mountain, to be the standard bearer for a company and I’ve finally done it.”

Catalan, “You certainly have and no one can take that away from you.”

King, “Sure they can.”

Professor Jim King - Copy.pngJuggernaut Jones.png

Both Catalan and Monteiro turn to where Professor Jim King is walking into frame with the big Juggernaut Jones standing behind him.

Catalan, “Professor King, this is scheduled time for Roger Monteiro —”

King holds up a hand.

King, “I don’t care who was scheduled for this time. What I care about is that Roger Monteiro is out here telling lies.”

Monteiro, “I haven’t told a single lie.”

King, “Yes you have. Anytime you call yourself the top of the mountain or the standard bearer or whatever tired cliche you have to say. You and I both know that the real standard bearer is this man. It’s Juggernaut Jones. Your win over him was a fluke. You don’t deserve to be where you’re at, you got lucky and when Juggernaut gets his chance to wrestle for the championship again, he’s going to prove it.”

Monteiro, “Oh we’ll find out.”

Catalan keeps her body in between Monteiro and King/Jones.

Catalan, “I’m going to go ahead and end this now so we don’t risk any physicality. Back to you Pat and Sue.”

The Diamond Dogs vs. The Prime Studs w/ Professor Jim King

Our semi-final contest was the only tag team match on the evening. The Diamond Dogs, who are former APW and SAISHO Tag Team Champions were making their North American debut here thanks to the talent trading agreement between SAISHO and MWCW. They took on The Prime Studs. While the Prime Studs aren’t the National Tag Team Champions, they seem to be the team from The Academy that has the most plays run for them and it really showed why here. They worked as a cohesive unit against The Diamond Dogs, who worked flawlessly together as well. This was the most competitive match up of the show so far and it ended when Jack Pryde hit Motty Kuroda with the PrydeFall.

In a bout that had decent wrestling but little heat, The Prime Studs defeated The Diamond Dogs in 10:28 when Jack Pryde pinned Motty Kuroda with a PrydeFall. Phil Anders was the weak link, struggling to keep up with everyone else's in-ring performance.

Keith, “I’m feeling no different than how I’d normally feel. I’m ready to show all of MWCW why I’m going to be the National Women’s Champion, why Danielle Sweetheart can’t hope to pin me or make me submit. She keeps calling herself the Queen of Hearts of the Queen of Wrestling, but there is only one queen of pro wrestling and it’s me. I’m the best in the sport. Skye Hermosa vs. Ashley Keith

The main event was given almost fifteen minutes of time and they did good work within the time. Hermosa came out hot and Keith ended up taking a powder to slow it down. Keith took control after the powder and worked a very technical style, lots of holds focusing on Hermosa’s neck and her knees to soften her up for the Proton Lock that she uses to honor her uncle and cousins. Hermosa sold well and made a big comeback, but ultimately Ashley Keith locked in the Porton Lock and got the submission victory.

In a bout that had good wrestling and a decent reaction from the crowd, Ashley Keith defeated Skye Hermosa in 14:19 by submission with a Proton Lock.

He sat on one of the cross beams of the split rail fence and inhaled the crisp morning air. February in Lawton was relatively mild, all things considered, with an average temperature of about 63, depending on which weather service you believed and Roger trusted the Weather Channel, or trusted it about as far as he could trust a weather service. He thought the weather business was a bit of a scam, it was the only business you could consistently be wrong in and still be employed. He shrug the thought off and looked out at the cattle grazing in the pasture. His family had raised cattle as long as he could remember. Probably as long as they had been forced to give up their ancestral way of life and conform to the accepted lifestyles of the American population at large. Roger’s family had lived in Lawton for over a hundred years. Generations of Monteiros raised in the same homes they live in now.  He loved this land. He loved being Numunuu. No matter how long he was away from home, he always came back. He visited with his parents. His grandparents. His siblings. He was a Kotsoteka. No matter where he went, he would always be a Kotsoteka.

Roger slid off the split rail fence and turned back towards the house. It was a simple ranch house that had always been slightly too small for the size of his family, but his family had always prided themselves on being a family that would rather be outside than inside. As a child, he could remember his mother sitting at the picnic table behind the house preparing meals or knitting or talking with his aunts and grandmothers. His father and uncles worked the herds. His siblings had all done jobs.  It was a close knit life. He looked over at the horse corral. Only his horse was in the corral. His Appaloosa that he had trained himself. Training your own horse was important in his family. It formed a bond. A thing that could be relied upon. The horse had to trust you and you had to trust the horse.

Roger’s eyes slid past the small sweat lodge and off towards the road. Lawton was a proper town with all of the modern conveniences of a town but the Monteiros had always been a traditional family. They tried to keep what it means to be Comanche alive.

Roger ran his fingers through his long, dark hair. It had been too long since he had been home. His shoulder and collarbone ached from the bad bump he had taken when working with Charlie Thatcher. He probably should have taken some time off to rest it, but he wouldn’t. He was in the most successful ride of his career. He couldn’t afford to take time off. Exodus 2010 wanted him for another tour and Patrick Santini had entrusted him to be the face of the company, at least for the beginning of it. He had waited his entire career for a moment like this. It is what he had dreamed of when he and his father and brothers and grandfathers would sit around the television and watch wrestling. While SWF and HGC and then TCW had dominated the television of Roger’s youth, his family had an extensive collection of Texas Wrestling League tapes. One of his uncles had every SCCW ever held on tape. His family liked good ol’ fashioned Southern and Wild Western wrestling. When wrestling had come to Lawton, they’d all been there. They cheered the heels and booed the bad guys and rooted for blood.

When Roger was thirteen, he had told his father that he wanted to be a wrestler. He had been nervous. His family was a traditional family. His family stayed in Lawton. They lived and worked together. They had meals together. They didn’t leave to pursue careers, especially not far fetched ones like wrestling. His father had, surprisingly, been supportive. He wanted his son to pursue his dream. He wanted his son to travel the world. Roger wanted to make his family proud. He knew that there wasn’t a chance he was ever going to reach the popularity of a Nicky Champion or even a Running Wolf. He didn’t have the size or the physique. He was a junior heavyweight and in the United States, they wanted big strong Indians. Good looking ones who looked like the fever dream of a promoter. Roger had understood he wasn’t that. So he didn’t try to be. Where as Nicky Champion had been the epitome of entertainer, Roger worked at being good in the ring. Where Running Wolf was all power and no real substance, Roger could do anything in a wrestling ring. He could fly, he could brawl, he could chain wrestle. He could talk. He could sell. He was small enough to work big, mean heels and sell for them – that is what had gotten him work originally. His willingness to sell. He had flown around the ring on the independents for every big heel that any independent promoter had thrown at him and he had made them all look good and despite never receiving any real interest from one of America’s Big Three, he found himself in demand. Not for any name organizations of course, but for anyone trying to start up he had been there.

It had baffled him, though. He could understand why USPW or SWF didn’t want him. He wasn’t big enough for their oversized rosters. He was too undersized for the Eisens wet dreams of guys like Rocky Golden and Jack Bruce and even Christian Faith. He wasn’t the Sam Strong-esque face that you needed to be to be at the top of the USPW ladder. He could have done well in TCW but they had never shown any interest. He had assumed that he would have gotten a break in a place like CZCW or MAW but neither of them had ever come calling. He had been ready to call it quits and settle back into his familial home and the life everyone else in his family had when Exodus 2010 had called. It was the tours of Japan that had reinvigorated him. The tours of Japan that breathed new life into his lungs. He was working with guys his size. He was tearing down the house and that would have been enough.

Then Patrick Santini had called.

Roger exhaled and walked towards the corral. He should ride.  Whisper hadn’t had a proper work out in too long and he owed it to her to give her one. His body ached, it always hurt, wrestling hurt, but that wasn’t an excuse. She didn’t know that and it wasn’t fair to her to take it out on her.

He had been shocked when Santini had called him. He and his wife were starting a promotion out of St. Louis. It was going to be a territory. They were going to work all around the Midwest. Three shows a week, every week. They had a TV deal on a real television station. Santini wanted Roger and not just as a guy on the roster. Not just to tear the house down. In that very first phone call, Santini had told Roger that the plan was for Roger to be the first champion. Roger was going to set the pace. And he wasn’t going to be alone. Santini laid out his plans to have a stable built around Roger. He was going to bring in Ace Youngblood, the veteran that Roger had worked with on many an independent show, to be both an agent and a talent. Wild Red Stallion, the big Lakota that Roger had met on a spot show in North Dakota was coming in and these twin brothers who had just graduated from the Piledriver School of Wrestling, the Thunderbirds, were also going to come in. A group of First Nation wrestlers that were going to be the key babyface group.

Roger had been hesitant at first. He didn’t want the First Nation to be stereotypes. He didn’t want to feud cowboys or be the stoic Indian or whatever people assumed he was supposed to be. He didn’t want Wild Red Stallion and the Thunderbirds pushed too far too fast because they were all big and strong and look liked Sam Strong or Jerry Eisen had created them in a laboratory. Patrick had assured him that that was not the case. They were going to get to be themselves. They were going to get to tear the house down and be put in positions to get over. They were going to feud with Professor Jim King and his cadre of talents. The goal, Santini had explained, was to get a manager who could get heat so that as guys came in and out they could get put with King and immediately get the rub.  Santini told Roger that he was going to be unleashed. He was going to be able to be the Roger Monteiro he had dreamed of back on his living room floor watching Rip Chord and Chief Two Eagles in a strap match. He was going to be put in a position to be the guy. So Roger had said yes.

Patrick Santini was a man of his word and Roger respected that. Roger wasn’t part of the inner circle. He wasn’t Patrick’s right hand man. He wasn’t Sue or Ace or Luis or Steffi or Mya. Those were the people that Patrick leaned on professionally. Ace and Steffi ran drills for the rookies. Luis was the lead agent. Mya was the assistant booker. Sue gave ideas, but in fairness to Sue she still had a full commitment with Griffin Sports for all of the sports she covered. Roger wasn’t in those meetings. He didn’t need to be. He got his marching orders and he did what he was asked, but he had never felt quite this good. He was on top. He was being trusted to carry main events and carry the ball. He went out to meet-and-greets for locker sponsors. He was wrestling full time. It couldn’t last forever, but he was going to make it last as long as he could.
