The Cougar Chronicles - BYU's Quest for #1

Recommended Posts

With not much to do in my life other than to read law briefs - I have tried to find a little enjoyment during the winter months here in Omaha. I stumbled upon a posting for this game over at the OOTP message boards and, after messing around with the demo for awhile, decided this was a game that I just had to have. So now that I have become rather addicted to Bowl Bound College Football (BBCF), I thought I would share with you how my team (The BYU Cougars) does during the 2006 season and beyond - provided that I don't get fired. :) *** The following posts will be changed to reflect "Take 2" of the 2006 season and beyond. A hard drive failure, coupled with a lack of a saved season file, compels me to give this another shot. Thanks for reading ***

Since Creighton does not have a football team, I thought I would fall back to my Mormon roots and play with the BYU Cougars :) I will play out all of my games and while I will use the "suggest play" feature to get play calling options, I will make all the calls on offense and defense. I will be using mods as I can find them. I will be using "ICY's" real NCAA teams mod, and hope to find additional player faces and player icons that I have used before. I have 8 conference games that have been selected for me and I am allowed to choose three non-conference games. I think I will schedule weak teams so as to build up my win total. I know that this will hurt my strength of schedule (SOS), but I think if I can get bowl eligible, than I might get some prestige points. *** any help on finding additional mods would be greatly appreciated ***

Here is a breakdown of the team. We don't have much in the way of star players, but we do have a few guys that should make a difference. The team is lead by QB Chris Saunders and has a few receivers that should make good targets. The defense may be a problem though. Not too much to work with. I have scheduled my three non-conference games. I will open the season by playing Nevada at home on week 1 (should be an easy win). The next week I play at home against University of Louisiana-Lafayette (should also be another easy win). My final non-conference game comes during week 15 when I play Toledo. All three non-conference teams are listed as having a SOS of 92+ (yes they are bad). I just hope that my strategy does not backfire on me. A loss to one of these teams would be horrible for the program. I will begin the season not ranked (no surprise there) and have been given a conference projection of 5thd place. I have a prestige rating of 50 (average) and a SOS of 103 (YIKES). The team expectations:
The alumni think that this is close to a .500 team if all goes right. We expect a 5th place finish in conference and a win over Utah.
I will run a "Run & Gun" offense attack and will play a 4-3 defense. The team only has 8 seniors, so I will be playing a lot of sophomores and juniors - which might help the team in the long run.

Well first up are the Toledo Rockets: http://www.nevadawolfpack.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10000&KEY=&SPID=4082&SPSID=45380 Nevada is projected to finish 7th in the WAC and are listed as having a recruiting class of 101 - a SOS of 101 - and a prestige rating of low (30). The Wolfpack run a Vertical Passing offense and rely on the QB Ricky Tate. On defense, Nevada use a 3-4 scheme, anchored by DE Karl Jones. Nevada head coach, George Foster, expressed his team's chances this week as being good, despite the overwhelming media consensus that this will be a blowout. Coach Foster stated that his team was "fired up" to start the season and believed that his players would show that they are a legitimate football team. BYU is a 10 point favorite.
We just learned that SS Joseph Ibarra is interested in visiting our game this weekend against Nevada. He is a 4-star rated player ranked No. 207 in the nation. He rates as the 12th best SS and No. 35th in the West region.
BYU Tops Nevada A crowd of 43,400 fans were on hand to enjoy the opening of the 2006 college football season. Despite the best efforts of the young N. Texas team, BYU showed today that they were clearly the better football team. BYU out gained N. Texas 496 to 223 in total yards, and saw flashes of greatness from QB Chris Saunders who threw for 318 yards on 29-48 passing and two touchdowns. BYU struck first with a 10 yard TD pass from Chris Saunders to Johnny Roth. N. Texas responded quickly by tossing a 68 yard bomb on the following possession. BYU made it 10-7 at the end off the 1st quarter when Chris Wells kicked a 34 yard FG. The 2nd quarter saw BYU put another 3 points on the board when Wells kicked a 35 yard FG. BYU went in to the half leading 13-7. The second half began with BYU driving the length of the field only to have QB Chris Saunders get picked off at the goal line. The teams traded punts, yet BYU was able to capitalize on a N. Texas turnover to put up a quick 41 yard FG, and then ended the 3rd quarter with a 33 yard TD pass to Daniel James. The 4th quarter contained no scoring. In his post-game conference, Coach Hinds expressed his satisfaction with his offense, stating that
The team executed its plays well, Saunders looked great, and that overall the team responded to his challenge to start the season the right way.
While it is obvious that the Cougars are still in early-season form, there were signs of great things to come. QB Saunders looks to be the real deal, and fans are already bringing up past BYU QB's as a comparison. While BYU fans are not ready to forget the greatness of LaVell Edwards - they are excited to see passion and enthusiasm back in the BYU football program.

The Ragin Cajuns will travel to Provo, Utah for a week 2 match up. http://www.ragincajuns.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=15400&KEY=&SPID=7585&SPSID=67390 The Cajuns are projected to finish 7th in the Sunbelt, and are listed as having a recruiting class of 112, a SOS of 82, and a prestige rating of low (30). They utilize a "Balanced Offense" relying on the QB Ronald Knight. On defense, the Cajuns run a 4-3 scheme and have a solid DT in Steve Walker. The Cajuns are 0-1 on the season, coming off a a blowout loss to #10 Oklahoma by a score of 61-7 during week 1. Head coach, Robert Pate, expressed concerns with his team's inability to stop the run during their first game and said that the team had focused on that aspect during practice this past week. Coach Johnson did put to rest rumors that star running back, Randall Baldwin, might not make the trip to Provo due to an unspecified infraction of team rules. Coach Johnson said "I spoke to Randy and expressed what I want and expect from all of my players and was assured that those rules and expectations would be met." BYU enters into this game ranked #22 in the nation on offense, and ranked #48 in the nation on defense. The Cajuns enters into game ranked #77 in the nation on offense, and ranked #118 in the nation on defense. BYU is favored by 25 points. Cougars Thump Cajuns 53-10 BYU is off to a great start on the year. Week 2 action saw the Cougars easily handle the Cajuns of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. While BYU fans did have a scare (falling behind 10-0) during the 1st quarter, the Cougars quickly broke out of their slumber and put up 53 unanswered points to turn the game into a complete rout. QB Chris Saunders was once again the center of attention; throwing for 300 yards and 4 scores. With the BYU passing game doing so well, it allowed A. Grant to turn in another 100+ yard game. While critics will easily dismiss the 2-0 start as being nothing more than a product of an easy schedule, Cougar fans will gladly take the record and stats as they advance to the start of Mountain West Conference games. Despite BYU's great start, there have been some questions about the play of preseason 1st team starter Harlan Carter. For whatever reason, he is clearly not living up to the expectation or hype. BYU fans are hoping that he will come alive once conference play begins.

They use a Run and Gun style offense utilizing the talents of QB Miquel Gardner and a 4-6 defensive scheme that focuses on DE David Weaver. Cougars victorious over Horned Frogs 37-17 BYU moved to 4-0 on the young season with a 37-17 win over the TCU Horned Frogs before a crowd of 43,887. While the score would seem to indicate an easy victory for BYU, this was a much closer game than the Cougars would have liked. TCU jumped out to an early 10-0 lead through the 1st quarter, due to a 39 yard TD pass from Gardner to Chan and than followed that up with a 45 yard FG by Odom. BYU came back strong in the 2nd quarter, scoring twice on passes from Willis - the first coming on a 20 yard catch by Snyder and the 2nd on a 5 yard reception by Burgess. While the momentum was seemingly favoring BYU, the Horned Frogs marched down the field in the close seconds of the 1st half and took the lead on a 16 yard reception by Sanders. After what can only be described as a passionate plea from Coach Hinds to his team, BYU reeled off 23 unanswered 2nd half points to win the game going away. BYU kicker Daniel Abbott contributed by hitting field goals of 20,36, and 44 yards in the 2nd half and QB John Willis connected on a 3 yard pass to TE Gary Burgess and a 12 yard reception by Donald Scott. While the tremendous performance by QB John Willis will, and rightfully so, garner much of the discussion of the game - it was once again apparent that the BYU running game may not be up to the challenge of facing better run defenses. The Cougars RB's were limited to 64 yards on 23 carries - though the team's overall rushing line is bolstered by Willis' 53 yards on 6 carries. Adding in a O-Line performance that was hardly worthy of quality play, 4 sacks and 10 hurries allowed, and there seem to be noticeable weakness in BYU's ability to keep the RB's moving forward and the QB off of his butt.

Week Six brings the UNLV Rebels (3-1 on the year) to Provo for an intriguing Mountain West match up. http://unlvrebels.cstv.com/ The Rebels are projected to finish 7th in the Mountain West and are listed as having a recruiting class of 82 - a SOS of 50 - and a prestige rating of below average (40). They run a vertical passing offense and rely on RB Steven Burton and QB Brian Rainey. On defense, UNLV uses a 4-6 scheme and count on OLB Grady Freeman to shut down the opposition. The Rebels have posted home wins against Troy, UTEP, and Wyoming and experienced a tough loss at Pittsburgh. Head coach, Clifton Hernandez, who is in the final year of a 4 year contract, expressed optimism that his team will be able to move the ball against the defense of BYU and that he had a gut feeling that Steven Burton was going to have a breakout game. When asked about contract negotiations with the school, Coach Hernandez said that he loves being a part of the TCU program and that he hopes that the details can all be worked out.

Cougars squeak out 23-19 victory The challenges keeping getting tougher, but the BYU Cougars showed the crowd of 43,981 fans that they were able to rise to the challenge. In a game that saw 4 lead changes and numerous missed opportunities, the Cougars out gained the Rebels 580 to 395 in total yards. The BYU running game, which had been a source of worry over the last few weeks, once again found its legs. Thanks to Manual Campbell's 92 yards on 20 carries and QB John Willis' 103 yards on 8 carries, the Cougars were able to control the ball for 31:15. While Willis' had a big game on the ground he also put up good numbers through the air. Willis' completed 26 of 48 passes for 388 yards and 2 scores (and two picks). His targets of choice today were Jerome Snyder who caught 8 passes for 143 yards and Donald Scott who caught 7 passes for 133 yards. Despite these outstanding numbers, the player of the game was awarded to BYU free safety James Scott who had 9 tackles, 4 stuffs, and 1 pass deflection. BYU is now 5-0 on the season and has started to get some votes for the top 25. If they can continue to perform well, than it is a legitimate possibility that they could see national recognition in a few weeks.

Week 7 will bring the Cougars toughest challenge to date as they travel to California to square off against the San Diego State Aztecs (2-4) http://goaztecs.cstv.com/ The Aztecs are projected to finish 5th in the Mountain West and are listed as having a recruiting class of 66 - a SOS of 8 - and a prestige rating of below average (40). They use a Run and Gun offense that uses the athleticism of QB James Johnson and run a 3-4 scheme on defense, led by OLB Kenneth Hoffman. The Aztecs have posted wins against Buffalo and Colorado State and have lost to #2 LSU, NC State, Navy, and TCU. During his weekly press conference, Coach Richard Robinson, in response to questions about the health of QB James Johnson who had suffered a concussion during the team's loss to TCU last week, assured the press that Johnson was feeling better and had been cleared to play this week.

Aztecs dominate Cougars 23-20 The Aztecs of San Diego State dominated the BYU Cougars today before a crowd of 43,202. The Aztecs dominated on both sides of the ball as they put up 535 yards of total offense and limited BYU to 302 yards. The Aztec defense was swarming the ball today as they intercepted 2 passes, forced 2 fumbles (recovered both), and sacked the QB once. San Diego State jumped to an early 1st quarter lead with a 28 yard field goal by Robert Austin and followed that up with a 21 yard pass from QB James Johnson to his brother Irvin Johnson. The 2nd quarter began with the Aztecs putting together a 12 play, 87 yard drive that was capped by a 4 yard pass to Brian Burnette. BYU did make a small push as they were able to spring RB Joseph Adame for a 35 yard touchdown run, but the Aztecs responded back with a 11 play, 62 yard drive that was capped by a Robert Austin 23 yard field goal. The second half saw the Aztecs kick another field goal to push their lead to a score of 23-7. While BYU did put a late 4th quarter charge together - a 6 yard fumble return and a 3 yard touchdown pass – it proved to be too little too late. The loss drops BYU to 5-1 on the season and hurts their chances to break into the top 25 in the national polls. The player of the game honors went to BYU free safety James Scott who had a tremendous day in the loss. He had 10 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, 2 forced fumbles, 4 stuffs, and 2 pass deflections and his quickly gaining support for national recognition.
