Week 9 takes the BYU Cougars to Colorado Springs to play the Falcons of the Air Force Academy. http://goairforcefalcons.cstv.com/ The Falcons are 2-5 on the season which started with wins over Army and North Texas, but then have suffered consecutive losses to TCU, Utah, Navy, UNLV, and New Mexico. Air Force is ranked 83rd in the nation in offense (at 337.3 yards per game) and 63rd in the nation in defense (giving up 377.6 yards per game). They are viewed as having the 89th best recruiting class, the 27th best SOS, a prestige rating of below average (45), and are projected to finish 6th in the Mountain West Conference. The Falcons use a Run and Gun style offense which focuses on the speed and agility of QB Barry McCall. On defense, the Falcons employ a 4-6 scheme that allows OLB Robert Clark to shine. Head Coach Dave Wallace said that he has encouraged his team to not give up on the season and that a win this week would go a long way for the program. BYU is favored by 7 points in this conference match up.

Cougars edge Falcons 17-14 In what was supposed to be an easy game for the BYU Cougars, turned out to be one of the toughest challenges of the season. For the second straight game, BYU QB John Willis looked confused and out of sync with the rest of the team, and his stats showed it. While there has been no official word from the team, there has been some speculation that Willis is covering up a rib injury that he suffered during the UNLV game. If this is true, it would go along way to explain his 10-29 and 155 yards (1 INT) performance. While neither offense was effective today, BYU did have a 17-0 lead through the mid-way point of the 3rd quarter. But like the last few weeks turnovers and blocking mistakes allowed the opponent to sneak back into the game. One of the few bright spots of the last few weeks has been BYU FS James Scott and once again he did not disappoint. He had a spectacular game in which he had 7 tackles, 2 pass deflections, and 3 interceptions. It is still a mystery how he was not awarded the player of the game for this outstanding performance. When asked in the post-game press conference about the play of his team, Coach Hinds stated that he was mindful of the play of his offense, but felt confident that they would be able to kick it back into gear. Only time will tell.

Week 10 is an open week for the team, allowing them the opportunity to prepare for next week's match up against the Colorado State Rams. The Cougars will travel to Fort Collins for what should be a good match up between these two conference rivals. http://csurams.cstv.com/ CSU is projected to finish 3rd in the Mountain West and is listed as having a recruiting class of 59 - a SOS of 66 - and a prestige rating of below average (45). They use a balanced offense, relying on the speed and leadership of QB Robert Kidd. On defense, the Lobos run a 3-4 scheme and rely on corner back Steven Wilson to anchor the team. The Lobos are 3-6 on the season, getting wins over Wyoming, New Mexico, and UNLV. Head coach, Matthew Dow said his team his anxious to get back on to the field after last week's tough three point loss to TCU. In assessing his team's performance thus far, Coach Dow said that he knew that there were going to be struggles this year given the inexperiance of the team (8 freshman starters), but feels that the players are giving it all they have and that the team will be able to build on this over the next few years.

Cougars defense saves the day - BYU nips CSU 27-20 For the third straight week, the once powerful BYU offense was no where to be seen. While the mood of the team continues to be positive and seemingly focused, there are some who are starting to wonder what has happened to the Cougar offense that was so dominating early in the year. Much like last week, the Cougars were ineffective in moving the ball and were only able to amass 208 total yards on the day. QB John Willis, who is still denying rumors that he is playing hurt, went 16-29 for 157 yards along with 1 TD and 2 INT. One recurring theme the last few weeks as been the O-line's total inability to block their own shadow, and today was no different by allowing 7 sacks and 5 hurries. Add in another poor showing by the running backs (a combined 12 carries for 17 yards by Adame and Campbell) and it is no wonder that BYU lost the time of possession battle 36:05 to 23:55. The Cougar defense was really no better, giving up a whopping 526 total yards and multiple missed assignments and blown plays. Yet in the end, it was the defense that bailed the Cougars out of what could have been a rather nasty loss. The first big play by BYU's "D" came in the 1st quarter when BYU DT John Wade took a CSU fumble 76 yards to even the score 7-7. The sealing play of the day came in the 4th quarter when BYU OLB Samuel James picked off Robert Kidd's pass and returned it 50 yards for the go ahead score. When asked about the play of his team, Coach Hinds said that he his concerned about the way that they have been performing and expects to get things turned around in time for the game against Utah, though the question remains if his players actually believe this.

Week 12 - The only game that really matters!!! There is nothing like a good rivalry game, and the Cougars and Ute's have been doing this for many years. In an annual tradition that often forces families apart (at least for that one day), and brings out the "Saints" and "Sinners" banter, the game this year has been given the extra boost of seeing the BYU Cougars go up against the #14 Utah Ute's on a special ESPN telecast. http://utahutes.cstv.com/ Utah is projected to finish 1st in the Mountain West and is listed as having a recruiting class of 65 - a SOS of 77 - and a prestige rating of average (50). The Ute's use a smash mouth offense, relying on the speed and power of senior RB Paul Singer who has accumulated 1200 rushing yards through the first 8 games of the year. On defense, Utah runs a 4-6 scheme and relies upon OLB Robert Cox to anchor the team. The Ute's have the 14th best offense in the nation and boast the 7th best defense. The Ute's are 8-0 on the year and are currently ranked #14th in both the coaches and media poll, 12th in the Championship series poll, 4th in the computer rating, and 4th in the RPI rating. When asked this week about the rumors being circulated concerning the vacant position at the University of Florida, head coach William Gallagher said that he not trying to look past this game and will worry about such matters at a later time. The Ute's come into the game as 10 point favorites.

Ute's Pound Cougars 27-13 The first 30 minutes of the game showed that BYU was more than able to compete with the Ute's - the last 30 minutes showed why the Ute's are a top 10 team in the nation. On what was a cold, rainy day, the Cougars and Ute's featured a war of attrition. Neither side seemed willing or able to move the ball on offense, as the first 4 scores of the game came on either FG or on turnovers that led to a short-field situation. BYU struck first, capitalizing on a Utah fumble that set up a 2 yard pass from BYU QB John Willis to TE Terry Owen. Utah and BYU than traded FG so that the score was 10-3 at the half. The third quarter began with Utah kicking a quick FG and than on the ensuing drive, forced a BYU fumble. The Ute's did not waste any time taking advantage of this opportunity as they were able to catch the BYU secondary out of position and completed a 53 yard touchdown pass that put the Ute's up 13-10 at the end of the third quarter. Any hope that BYU had of keeping the game close were quickly dashed when the Ute's fired off two quick touchdowns (separated by another BYU turnover) that finished the game for good. While the defense of BYU held all conference RB Paul Singer to 83 yards on 29 carries - they just could not come up with the big defensive plays when they needed to late in the game. BYU QB John Willis was once again minimally effective - passing for 144 yards on 18 for 37 attempts and the question still remains as to what has happened to the John Willis of the first half of the season. The BYU running game was also not able to get anything going against the Ute's defense, with Joseph Adame being the top rusher - getting 41 yards on 14 carries. In what has been an otherwise good season for the BYU program, this loss illustrates that the team still has much to learn and develop if it hopes to be able to compete for the Mountain West title.

Week 13 will find the Cowboys of Wyoming coming to Provo for the Cougars last Mountain West match up of the year. http://wyomingathletics.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/wyo-m-footbl-body.html Wyoming is projected to finish 9th in the Mountain West and is listed as having a recruiting class rank of 74 - a SOS of 21 - and a prestige rating of low (35). The Cowboys use a balanced offense, relying on the speed and power of RB Rodney Smith who has rushed for 876 yards thus far on the year. On defense, the Lobos run a 3-4 scheme and rely on DE Jeffrey Carlson to anchor the team. The Lobos are 5-5 on the season (3-4 in conference), getting wins over W. Michigan, Hawaii, New Mexico, TCU, and Air Force. Head coach, James Peters stated that his team was "fired up" for the game against BYU and that his team had already exceeded expectations and has "nothing to lose". It will be interesting to see how BYU responds after their loss last week to Utah.

BYU Dominates Wyoming 38-16 In the final home game of the 2006 season, the BYU Cougars put on an offensive display that their fans will not soon forget. Racking up a season high 610 total yards, the Cougars were led by senior John Willis who completed a season high 43 passes (58 attempts) for 457 yards and 5 touchdowns. The BYU running game also showed signs of life as Manual Campbell rushed for 97 yards on 24 carries as well as catching 6 passes for 52 yards and 2 TD's. While the Cougar offense will get most of the press, the BYU defense was also in top performance has they held the Cowboys to 198 total yards on the day. The Cougar D-line was able to force 2 fumbles, 4 sacks (3 by DT Michael Murray), and 1 interception. While the Cougars were able to win this one easily, there were a two areas that they struggled with once again - penalties and turnovers. In what has become a common theme for the program, the Cougars were once again heavily penalized and had great difficulty holding onto the ball. BYU was called for 10 penalites (83 yards) as well as 5 fumbles, losing 3 of them. While the team has performed very well for Coach Hinds during his 1st year, it is obvious that discipline is something that he will have to instill in his players for the next season as they have not shown it as of yet.

Week 15 – the final game of the regular season for the Cougars, sees BYU traveling to the state of Ohio to face the Akron Zips (2-8) of the Mid-American Conference. http://www.gozips.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10800&KEY=&SPID=4319&SPSID=47122 The Zips were projected at the start of the season to finish 12th in the conference – and they have willingly obliged by currently residing in last place. They are listed as having a recruiting class of 97th best in the nation – a SOS of 22nd – and a prestige rating of very low (25). They use a vertical passing offense that relies on WR Arturo Irvin. Irvin leads the team in receptions (45), receiving yards (671), and receiving touchdowns (3). The Zips run a 3-4 scheme on defense, led by ILB Kelly Hall – who leads the team with 94 tackles. The Zips have posted wins against Central Florida and Toledo, and were blown out in their only other match up against a ranked team when the lost to Texas 55-13 on week 1. During his weekly press conference, Coach Jason Sorensen said that he was pleased with how the team has continued to challenge each week, despite the lack of victories that they have enjoyed this year. When asked about the rumors that his future was in jeopardy despite the fact that he still has three years left on his contract, he said “I love being a Zip and hope that I can continue to be a part of this university”. Athletic Director Casey Foster had no comment when asked about the matter.
BYU Akron 418.2 (32) Team Off 331.1 (87) 340.4 (25) Team Def 385.7 (79)
Cougars zap Zips 34-0 BYU ended the regular season much the same way they started the season - by beating up on a weaker opponent. Playing in a heavy rain most of the day, the Cougars were able to overpower the Zips and control the flow of the game. BYU racked up 468 total yards, led by QB John Willis' 24 for 38 passing and 268 yards as well as RB Manual Campbell's 126 yards on 31 carries. The defense was led by FS James Scott who had 9 tackles and 1 INT as well as ILB Christopher Williams who recorded 8 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble. Penalties and turnovers were once again a problem for the Cougars as they were called for 8 penalties that resulted in 55 lost yards. They also fumbled the ball 3 times (losing it twice) and were intercepted once. I can only hope that it was related more to the weather than anything else, but I have my doubts. Player of the game honors went to RB Manual Campbell who rushed for 126 yards on 31 carries as well as catching 4 passes for 49 yards and 1 TD. It will be fun to see how this freshman does over the next few years of play - he could be something really special.

Playoff Games - Recap: No real surprises during the first week. All the higher seeds won their respective games with the exception of Pitt – which I thought was rated higher than they should have been (SOS 109). Here is how the games played out: Purdue put up 542 total yards as they cruised to the easy victory. QB Leonard Wilson was 14 of 15 for 249 yards and RB Nick Wahl rushed for 251 yards on 36 carries. POG was Wahl. Utah put up 579 yards as they crushed Hawaii. QB Simpson was 15 for 25 for 376 yards and RB Paul Singer rushed for 156 yards on 29 carries. POG was Singer. Oklahoma amassed 635 total yards on the day. Heisman Trophy winner Jonathan Dehart passed for 432 yards on 33 of 38 passing and was named POG. LSU was up against a tough RedHawk team today, but they were able to out gain them 470 to 330. LSU QB Trenton Reilly was 26 of 35 for 278 yards and RB Larry Shepard rushed for 121 yards on 17 carries. POG went to LSU OT Reggie Harris. Texas was simply amazing – they put up 742 yards  !!! Texas QB Hugh Davis threw for 550 yards on 31-43 attempts. Texas RB Brian Payne rushed for 177 Yards on 29 carries. POG was Davis. Florida shut down ASU, only allowing the Sun Devils 105 total yards (compared to 499 by Florida). QB Steven Morales was 24 of 44 for 321 yards and RB Ronnie Simmons rushed for 147 yards on 30 carries. POG went to FS Lester Staples of ASU – NOT SURE ABOUT THAT CHOICE !!! In the only “upset” on the day – Auburn topped Pitt in OT. While Pitt did out gain Auburn 549 to 376, they had 6 turnovers compared to Auburn's 2. Passing leader was Pitt's Floyd William who was 19 for 35 – 265 yards. The rushing leader was Karl Maloney who gained 223 yards on 30 carries. POG was Maloney. K-State won the yardage battle 497 to 395. KSU QB David Albright passed for 270 yards on 14-41 attempts. KSU RB Kevin Berger rushed for 147 yards on 13 carries. POG was KSU DE Earle Rogers – 2 sacks, 2 stuffs, 6 tackles.
