TF?!? Which other promotion outside WWE and AEW could have given him a multi-million dollar contract in the US? Should he have cut his paychecks and gone to the indies to make someone in the IWC happy?

And that's not just CM Punk is something applicable to any other wrestling superstar with big name value; imagine Randy Orton leaving WWE and going to MLW for a dime lol

All I have said is that Punk waited until AEW was a place to be to sign on. I am not saying or inferring anything else. He was probably smart to wait and it probably did his own personal brand some good. But being smart to wait doesn't not make you a bandwagoner. I still think he is one and he would probably admit that he is too.

He got a text message from The Young Bucks in 2019 about joining AEW. Instead of replying to it, he sent a tweet about feeling disrespected by people who text him instead of showing him the proper respect by calling him. It's obvious that the way he handled this, combined with the timing of his arrival, rubbed some people the wrong way. He obviously didn't want to gamble his own reputation on AEW being a success. Maybe he was prudent to hold out but that doesn't change the timing of his arrival and the implications of it.

Also his time away from the industry pretty much obliterates those "CM Punk is an egomaniac" arguments.  The man stepped out of the spotlight for seven years and not a peep was heard from him the entire time.  Hardly a man who can't stand being out of the spotlight huh?

Apart from that Colt Cabana podcast that spawned several lawsuits, yeah, not a peep from Punk haha. I don't think he's an egomaniac, I don't think he really cares about the spotlight either. But he did do things between 2014 and 2021. He did fight in the UFC, he did do ComicCon, he did appear on WWE Backstage. He did do some acting. He didn't just do absolutely nothing at all.

WFT??? 😂😂😂 He refused to wrestle outside WWE for years because no other promotion was even close to his level! Be real, you can hate CM Punk all you want, but he's objectively a wrestling superstar.

Who could have afforded him? MAYBE only NJPW could have had the "economic" means at their disposal.

And why would CM Punk should have gone to ROH, Impact, etc.? It would have made no sense for him.

The thing is, your post proved the point I was making haha - that Punk was too high and mighty to think he should wrestle elsewhere until AEW was firmly established on TV and very much a place to be for wrestlers. Once it was a wagon going places, that was when Punk got on for a ride. I'm not hating on the guy for pointing this out, I am pretty sure he would agree with me if he read what I have written here.

I would assume by grabbing the brass ring and becoming the face of the company, doing the things Punk complained about (''I'm not on the collector cups, cover of the program, barely promoted, not on the poster of Mania, not on the signature etc) but that's me seeking the explanation rather than fact.

They put several people in that position on the card whilst Cody was off solving racism, slathering heat proof gel all over his back and trying to help make QT Marshall a thing. That torch had been passed around a lot of people before they finally handed it to Cody. And it wasn't really Punk's torch anyway, it was John Cena's and then it was Roman's.

I thought maybe he was referring towards the growth of alternative wrestling companies and the general pro-wrestling anti-WWE revolution in the mid 2010's. But, even then, that wasn't a revolution started by Punk. He re-signed with WWE after the pipe bomb and then laid down for Triple H, that's hardly the Che Guevara of wrestling haha. He then refused to wrestle anywhere else after walking out until he found a suitable bandwagon to jump on. What a revolutionary haha.

I thought it was a pretty crap promo all things considered.

And jeez is enough to kick out at 1 (!!!) from a devastating finisher from your WORLD CHAMP to be elevated? To me it simply goes to detract from the finisher itself: how can the best shot / one of the best shots of a 120+ kg world champ not be enough to keep midcarders of maybe 90 kg shoulders to the ground? It's ridiculous, it's wack, and it took all credibility away from the Muscle Buster itself.

I didn't mind it during the match as a sort of adrenaline rush on Hook's part. But when he got hit with another one after the match and got up within like 2 seconds to ask for more, I was thinking that maybe they had gone too far. Like, yeah, get back up but use the ropes, take your time more, make a bigger deal of how much of a struggle it is to get to your feet and ask for more. He's still a kid with a lot to work on and I'm sure he knows that.

I just hope that Deonna Purazzo doesn't fall prey to the "AEW Women's Division big debut" curse that we've seen time and again. See also: Ruby Soho, Taya Valkyrie, Athena, etc.

The same curse seemingly applies to the many number one free agents they have signed too. Sometimes, I don't think they get that you have to avoid pinning some wrestlers. Or maybe they get it but don't care. Still, not much has come from the signings of Ethan Page, Jay Lethal, Keith Lee, Brian Cage, Malakai Black and Andrade El Idolo.

Unless TK gets off the sniff and finally admits there are improvements needed (getting a team to help book for example) rather than saying "its great, we're great, that's great... Great, great, great!" Then AEW will continue losing its audience and will just become a "do you remember that promotion..." story.

He has given other people power at various points though.

He let The Young Bucks have booking power and that gave us the Dark Order minions skit. He let Cody have booking power and that gave us the Anthony Ogogo weigh-in, Cody solving racism and randomly putting loads of gel on his back to go through a flaming table. He let Brandi Rhodes do her stupid Nightmare Collective storyline which was obviously her idea and was entirely self-serving. He's let Jimmy Jacobs turn AEW into comedy skit central with all sorts of wacky character presentations and stupid pre tape vignettes. Sonjay Dutt clearly has input on things, he's supposedly a part of the creative team according to an official AEW press release. Kenny Omega apparently books the women's stuff sometimes. Tony reportedly gave Collision to CM Punk and Bryan Danielson who turned it into Clash Of The Champions with its 20 minute TV matches and a more old school presentation. Jericho has spoken at length about his booking power and his professional relationship with TK. It's known that QT Marshall used to put together the TV layouts and do some bits with the creative. Moxley has said he shoots from the hip on his promos and does a lot of his own stuff. Big Swole said the whole culture is that talent have to pitch stuff so there's obviously some freedom and an opportunity to be an active part of creative if that is what a talent wants. Janela has backed this up and said he simply wasn't confident enough in pitching his own stuff to succeed in AEW.

Sorry for the wall of text. 😂 But yes, all that is to say that Tony doesn't do it alone. Finding the right team and getting the right people around you is obviously very hard in pro wrestling.

I would be shocked if MJF left.

I wouldn't be. He's 27-years-old and wrestling is a short career, WWE is the place to be and he's pretty much done it all in AEW now. I expect that he will stay because AEW have done right by him but he might think that the time is right to have his shot on the bigger stage.

  8. Continental Classic has been good so far. I’m interested in whether they’ll go all the way with Brody King. The real interesting thing is that it’s hard to call a winner, unlike the G1 Climax where you know only a handful might win the tournament since it’s for the title shot at the Dome. Literally anybody could win this Triple Crown.

  9. The stipulation that winning the C2 meant you won a belt to be defended in ROH and NJPW STRONG was super odd. Why would any AEW talent want to win that? Well done on surviving that grueling tournament, you’re off to our developmental brand’s TV tapings and a much smaller feeder league for a Japanese promotion. Always sounded pretty dumb, just give them a trophy and parlay it into a World title shot.

  10. Somehow I doubt that The CW decided within the span of ten days not to pick up NWA and to pick up WWE NXT instead. I'm no expert on the subject but surely negotiations of this nature take place for a solid six months before they ink the deal?

I bet Hausman heard that The CW were picking up wrestling, listened to Corgan talking on Busted Open, and then ran with the assumption that the two stories were mutual and called it an exclusive.

Personally, I'd let him go, see what he does outside of AEW for a year, then bring him back with a new twist.

He wouldn't come back if you let him go. If Sammy Guevara was a free agent, I think he would be debuting on NXT on The CW within a matter of weeks. Failing that, I think he would be a great fit for NJPW and could pick up dates in TNA. The guy can really go when the bell rings, just imagine what he could do with Mike Bailey, Hiromu Takahashi or Taiji Ishimori. Imagine Sammy Guevara versus Will Ospreay...

No, if AEW were to let him go or to try and send him away to AAA or CMLL, I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that Sammy would think twice about whether he wants to re-up his contract with AEW when it comes due. I already think Ricky Starks is on his way out and I don't think it's crazy to assume that WWE would make some sort of move for Sammy Guevara.

Tony has got to stop putting these big matches on AEW Collision on Saturday. Omega vs. MJF could draw a huge PPV and they'll be lucky to get 500k to watch it Saturday.

Why even do it now anyway with Omega and MJF face? Shouldn't they turn Omega heel first?

It was never a good idea even when Punk was on Collision and there was a brand split. Now with Punk gone, AEW is just throwing away big matches.

Collision is the C-Show now and should be used primarily for recaps and feature underneath matches, not (arguably) the two biggest stars in the company.

There's no problem doing it but, yet again, it was not been built properly and it was not promoted adequately. 3 days build. I know they had bits and pieces on Dynamite but it should have been announced a month ago and they should have been in the town two weeks ago doing local media to sell tickets. They won't make the kind of gains from it that they should be making because they refuse to put in the hard yards to make it happen.

I don't know, but if you have to clarify what your initials stand for because it may not be palatable to advertisers or broadcast partners, maybe you picked the wrong ones. To each their own.

I understood this in 2017 but with six years under their belt now, it's not as though Impact Wrestling has helped them make massive inroads in a commercial partnership sense. Their owners pretty much had to buy a TV channel just to get Impact Wrestling on the air.

I saw this tweet yesterday and I swear to god that I had completely forgot she is in this company lol

Hasn't wrestled an AEW singles match after that stinker with Britt Baker. Yet another instance of the women's division in this company being a lot worse than the internet will ever let on.
