Announcers: Jim Ross & Jim Cornette

    TV Rating: 1.33

Jim Ross welcomes fans to a new era of WCW with the debut episode of Saturday Night, and introduces his new co-host, Jim Cornette. They discuss WCW's withdrawal from the NWA a few days prior and announce that the NWA has stripped Sting of the World Heavyweight Championship as a result. But against the expectations of pretty much the entire wrestling world, they don't announce a match or some kind of tournament to determine the first ever WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Instead, they announce that the WCW Board of Directors has decided that when the first champion is crowned, they want there to be no question that he's the most deserving of the honor. So WCW will be without a World Champion until they can determine how to best accomplish that goal. However, they do announce that that champion will be crowned at the Great American Bash PPV in June! (99)

WCW World Television Championship: "Z-Man" Tom Zenk makes his fourth defense of the TV title, pinning Bobby Eaton with a superkick in 14:03 after botched interference by Eaton's friend Larry Zbyszko. (69)

Ricky Morton surprisingly announces former Four Horsemen Tully Blanchard as his mystery partner for a WCW World Tag Team Championship match with dominant champions Doom that starts right now. (68)

WCW World Tag Team Championship: Doom looked dominant here as usual, but Morton and Blanchard's individual tag experience did keep them in it for a while. Doom eventually retains at 9:33 after Blanchard turned on Morton when Ric Flair came to ringside and whispered something in Blanchard's ear. (76)

Potential future star Dustin Rhodes started 1991 off on the right foot, pinning veteran Buddy Lee Parker with a Running Bulldog in 5:49. (61)

Tony Schiavone announces WCW's Top 10 Singles Wrestlers of the week, with the list topped by Sting.

    1.) Sting

    2.) Ric Flair

    3.) Lex Luger - U.S. Champion

    4.) Barry Windham

    5.) Ricky Steamboat

    6.) Arn Anderson

    7.) Z-Man - TV Champion

    8.) Sid Vicious

    9.) Dustin Rhodes

    10.) Terry Funk

    (71)

With Diamond Dallas Page in their corner, The Fabulous Freebirds make quick work of Keith Hart and Joey Maggs, with Garvin securing a win for the veteran team with a Piledriver in 4:41. (60)

Jim Ross interviews Sting, who discusses his thoughts on the WCW World Heavyweight Championship situation. Sting says that no matter what method the WCW Board of Directors decides on to crown the first champion, he's sure he'll come out on top! (77)

A solid match between Terry Funk and Dutch Mantell came to an abrupt end at 8:13 when Funk was attacked by a debuting "Stunning" Steve Austin after a distraction by Madusa. After the match, Austin puts a pretty good beating on Funk before referees and other officials can pull him off. (76)

WCW United States Championship: With all the other Horsemen also in the building, it seemed obvious Lex Luger would have to contend with more than Barry Windham to retain his United States title. That never came to fruition though, as Windham was left to fend for himself, succumbing to a Powerslam in a bit over 15 minutes. Luger makes his first successful defense in 15:27. (84)

As Windham is recovering from his loss, Sid enters the ring and helps him to his feet. Ric Flair and Arn Anderson soon join them and Flair begins to scold Windham for losing the match. Windham takes it at first but eventually gives into his anger and shoves Flair.

This prompts Tully Blanchard to run in and take out Windham's leg from behind with a chair. After hitting Windham in the leg with the chair again himself, Ric Flair locks in a Figure Four as Windham shouts in agony.

Lex Luger rushes back to the ring to try and stop the assault, but Sid pounds him to the mat as soon as he enters and then hits a Powerbomb. Sting, the Steiner Brothers, Ricky Morton and Dustin Rhodes rush out next and manage to clear the ring of Horsemen as the debut episode of WCW Saturday Night goes off the air. (82)

Junkyard Dog beat Ken Wayne. (51)

Michael Wallstreet and Mr. Hughes of the York Foundation defeated The Lightning Express. (57)

After the match, Mr. Hughes takes out the Lightning Express for lasting nearly a minute longer than Alexandra York had calculated with her computer. (48)

Big Van Vader demolished The Italian Stallion and Joey Maggs. (45)

The Steiner Brothers got the better of the makeshift team of Kevin Sullivan and Moondog Rex. (69)

Following their loss, Kevin Sullivan attacks his partner Moondog Rex for "not getting the job done." (57)

Announcers: Jim Ross & Jim Cornette

    TV Rating: 1.28

Jim Ross and Jim Cornette open the show by announcing two big matches for the first ever Superbrawl PPV, Sting vs. Stan Hansen and Ric Flair vs. El Gigante. An irate Ric Flair rushes out to complain to Ross and Cornette about how Gigante isn't worth his time and how it's a "TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE!!" that he wasn't simply awarded the new WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Or at least put in a match for the vacant title for Superbrawl! (88)

Dan Spivey squashes Pez Whatley with a Spivey Spike. (61)

El Gigante defeated Mando Guerrero in 5:03 by submission with a Clawhold. (40)

In their debut match in WCW, The Hardliners(Dick Slater & Dick Murdoch) had no trouble with Norman The Lunatic and The Italian Stallion. (68)

Tony Schiavone's at ringside for a post-match interview with WCW's newest team The Hardliners, but Lex Luger hijacks the interview to challenge Sid Vicious to a match at Superbrawl. Luger says Sid may have won the battle when he Powerbombed him last week, but he'll win the war if Sid's got the guts. (78)

Tony Schiavone announces WCW's Top 10 Tag Teams of the Week with WCW World Tag Team Champions Doom topping the list. (71)

1.) Doom - WCW World Tag Team Champions

2.) The Steiner Brothers - WCW United States Tag Team Champions

    3.) The Fabulous Freebirds

    4.) The Young Pistols

5.) Arn Anderson & Sid Vicious

6.) The York Foundation (Various Combinations)

    7.) The Lightning Express

    8.) The Renegade Warriors

    9.) The State Patrol

    10.) The Royal Family

    (82)

Joey Maggs gave Terry Talor more than he bargained for in a decent match, but fell to a Flying Forearm Smash in 6:03. (63)

Shocking everyone in attendance, Tracy Smothers defeated Butch Reed with a suprise roll up in 7:21. (66)

Doom doesn't take too kindly to Smothers' method of victory or the Young Pistols' post-match celebration, and a brawl ensues. (55)

In a stiff brawl that would have been the match of the night if not for the outstanding main event a few matches later, Stan Hansen nearly takes Ron Garvin's head off with a Lariat for the win in 8:36. (81)

Tony Schiavone gives an update on Barry Windham's condition following the Horsemen's attack on their former member last week, and announces that he'll be out indefinitely with a knee injury. He also announces that Ricky Morton has found another partner and they will face Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard at Superbrawl. (64)

In his in-ring WCW debut "Stunning" Steve Austin pinned veteran grappler Mike Graham with a Stun Gun. (54)

After the match, Terry Funk tries to exact revenge on Austin for attacking him last week, but a distraction from Madusa once again allows Austin to take the advantage, putting Funk down with the Stun Gun. (81)

Ricky Steamboat and Buddy Landel wrap up the show with a superb match that saw Landel in control for a large portion before ultimately falling to a Diving Crossbody in 16:14. (89)

    TV Rating: 0.10

The Steiner Brothers defeated another makeshift team featuring Kevin Sullivan, with Scott pinning El Cubano. (66)

In a repeat of last week, Kevin Sullivan attacks El Cubano for not "getting the job done." The Steiners decide to put a stop to it this time though, and pull Sullivan off. But Dan Spivey blindsides them from out of nowhere and takes them out with vicious clotheslines. Sullivan is giddy at this turn of events as he drops to his knees to "praise" Spivey. (59)

Dutch Mantell defeated Dustin Rhodes in 7:45 by count out when Rhodes rolled him back in from the outside but couldn't beat the 10 count himself. (55)

Big Van Vader wins his second handicap match in as many weeks, beating Dino Casanova and Ray Lloyd this time. (36)

As Vader's leaving the ring, he's stopped by Tony Schiavone. Schiavone compliments his impressive victory but Vader is highly annoyed, screaming that he wants a real challenge before storming off. (60)

Michael Wallstreet defeated Brad Armstrong in 16:02 by pinfall with a handful of tights when he realized Alexandra York's predicted time of victory was about to pass. (65)

Armstrong complains to Referee Mike Atkins about Wallstreet's dirty deed, but he's cut short by a Mr. Hughes attack. With Armstrong's partner Tim Horner out licking his wounds from the beating they took from Hughes last week, Armstrong quickly succumbs to a huge running splash as Main Event comes to a close. They also announce a championship match for the show as, WCW World Television Champion Tom Zenk defends the title against the man who tried to help Bobby Eaton take it from him two weeks ago, Larry Zbyszko. (95)

Tommy Rich used a Sitout Suplex Slam to seal a victory over George South in 5:47. (61)

Gordon Solie hosts a WCW Magazine segment, wherein he announces three more matches for the inaugural Superbrawl PPV. After instigating a post-match brawl with the Young Pistols following Tracy Smothers' surprise victory over Butch Reed last week, Doom will be forced to defend the WCW World Tag Team Championship against the Young Pistols. Vader will get his wish for some "real competition" when he faces the Junkyard Dog. And after two run-ins with Steve Austin, both going the way of the youngster thanks to distractions from his valet Madusa, Terry Funk has been granted a one one match with "Stunning" Steve Austin. (63)

Junkyard Dog defeated Black Bart in 7:51 by pinfall with a Powerslam. (55)

Despite repeated interference attempts by both Diamond Dallas Page and Michael "P.S." Hayes, Brian Pillman defeated Jimmy Garvin in 15:07 by pinfall with an Air Pillman. (70)

In a pre-match interview with Tony Schiavone, Ricky Morton names newcomer Jeff Jarrett as his partner for Superbrawl to take on Arn Anderson and the man who betrayed him just two weeks ago, Tully Blanchard. (70)

Ricky Morton and Jeff Jarrett show some great chemistry in their win against The State Patrol, as Jarrett pins Parker with a Swinging Neckbreaker. (57)

Paul E. Dangerously hosts "The Danger Zone" segment in the ring with Sid Vicious as his guest. Vicious says he's got no problem flattening Luger again at Superbrawl, but only if Luger puts the U.S. Title on the line. Sid doesn't have to wait long for his answer as Luger storms the ring and clotheslines him over the top rope. Luger grabs the mic from a frightened Dangerously and agrees to put the title on the line as Sid slowly backs away. (71)

WCW World Television Championship: Larry Zbyszko beats champion Tom Zenk in 13:29 but by disqualification after Bobby Eaton accidentally hits him with a foreign object intended for Zenk. Tom Zenk retains the title as it can't change hands on a disqualification. (72)

We open the final WCW Saturday Night before Superbrawl with some tag team action, as The Fabulous Freebirds made quick work of Art Barr and Pez Whatley in 4:38 with a Michael Hayes Bulldog to Whatley. (50)

Bobby Eaton gets his first win this year, beating Norman The Lunatic with an Alabama Jam. (61)

After his victory, Eaton is confronted by Larry Zbyszko as he's leaving the ring. Zbyszko accuses Eaton of costing him the TV title last week on purpose as revenge for Zbyszko accidentally costing Eaton two weeks before that. Eaton insists it really was an accident but the argument quickly turns heated and they have to be separated. (81)

Sid Vicious toys with Hector Guerrero before pinning him with back to back to back Powerbombs, all the while loudly taunting Lex Luger that it was a preview of his fate at Superbrawl tomorrow night! (55)

Jim Ross and Jim Cornette announce the breaking news that Larry Zbyszko will face Bobby Eaton at Superbrawl with the winner advancing to face Z-Man for the WCW Television Championship later the same night. They also announce that Dustin Rhodes has been given his requested rematch with Dutch Mantell for Superbrawl. (68)

With their tag match coming up at Superbrawl tomorrow night, Ricky Morton and Arn Anderson face off in singles action tonight with Morton getting the win by DQ after Jeff Jarrett woke downed Referee Mark Curtis just in time to catch Arn Anderson in the act of using brass knucks that were passed to him by Tully Blanchard. (79)

Missy Hyatt interviews "Stunning" Steve Austin and Madusa and asks Austin if he's sure it's wise to go after a man like Terry Funk. After all, Funk's considered a legend for a reason. Austin agrees that he's a legend and says that's exactly why he chose him as his first target, vowing to make a name for himself if he has to take out every legend in the business to do it! And it all starts with Terry Funk at Superbrawl! (61)

In a potential preview of things to come at Superbrawl, Ron Simmons avenged Butch Reed's loss to Young Pistol Tracy Smothers two weeks back by dominating Young Pistol Steve Armstrong this week, winning with a Spinebuster in 5:14. (71)

    (70)

Ric Flair comes out to start the main event segment, joining Ross and Cornette on commentary to scout his Superbrawl opponent El Gigante up close.

He didn't get a whole lot of "scouting" done though, as the match between Hansen and El Gigante almost immediately disintegrated into a street fight and both men were counted out in just 5:56. (78)

Gigante and Hansen continue to fight after the bell until Ric Flair comes from the commentary position and hits Gigante with the bell on Hansen's bullrope, bringing the giant to his knees. Flair gets Gigante back in the ring with help from Hansen, and after hitting him with the bell once more, tries to lock in the figure four. Sting comes to the rescue though, brandishing a steel chair and scaring both Hansen and Flair away. (90)

Stan Hansen - 88 vs. Ron Garvin - January 12th episode of WCW Saturday Night

Arn Anderson - 77 vs. Ricky Morton - January 26th episode of WCW Saturday Night

    Chemistry discoveries for the month:

    - Michael Wallstreet and Mr. Hughes have absolutely zero chemistry as partners.

    - Mr. Hughes and Alexandra York are a good pairing who play well off each other.

    - Ricky Morton and Jeff Jarrett showed excellent chemistry as a team.

    - Ric Flair and Rick Steiner showed absolutely no chemistry as opponents.

    - Brian Pillman and Michael Hayes just don't click at all as opponents.

New protege relationships for the month:

    - Larry Zbyszko has taken Joey Maggs under his wing as a protege.

    Worker comments/promises for the month:

    - Scott Steiner says The Italian Stallion is a waste of time.

    - Stan Hansen says Madusa is pretty good in the ring and that I should "push the kid."

    - Sting thinks Sid Vicious has a bright future and he's willing to put him over to help get him to the next level. He'll only do it once though and it has to be in the next two months.

    - Ricky Steamboat says Brad Armstrong is turning into a good worker that's worth getting behind.

    - Harley Race likes what he's hearing from Diamond Dallas Page and says there's money in his promos if given air time.

    Other notes for the month:

    - I always thought Barry Windham was an odd fit for the Horsemen, so I wanted to replace him right away. Enter Tully Blanchard.

    - I didn't plan on bringing in The Hardliners so early, but losing The State Patrol with Parker going to AJPW forced my hand.

    - I figured Steamboat and Landel would pull a pretty good score for the main event of the January 12th episode of Saturday Night, but 89? WOW!!

    - I was also surprised by the Stan Hansen vs. Ron Garvin match from that same show since I got a warning that Garvin couldn't even go the 8 minutes I booked it for.

    - I don't really like to have TV titles defended on PPV, but WCW did it in real life and with no world champion until June, I'm gonna use it as my secondary singles title for now. After that I'm not sure.

    - 71 for The Hardliners versus the Guerrero jobbers on the January 27th Main Event show? I'd almost be satisfied with that score for a WCW Saturday Night main event!

  3. Stan Hansen vs. El Gigante

Ricky Morton w/Jeff Jarrett vs. Arn Anderson w/ Tully Blanchard

Ron Simmons w/ Butch Reed & Teddy Long vs. Steve Armstrong w/ Tracy Smothers

    Thanks for predicting again, Munit!

    Damnit I missed a show.

WCW Saturday Night January, Week 4 Predictions Card:

    Stan Hansen vs. El Gigante

Ricky Morton w/Jeff Jarrett vs. Arn Anderson w/ Tully Blanchard

Ron Simmons w/ Butch Reed & Teddy Long vs. Steve Armstrong w/ Tracy Smothers

Not a problem, Jaysin! At least not on the prediction contest front. With over a dozen matches on the card for the upcoming Superbrawl PPV, you could be predicting for the first time in the diary and end up in first place by a wide margin.

    Stan Hansen vs. El Gigante

Ricky Morton w/Jeff Jarrett vs. Arn Anderson w/ Tully Blanchard

Ron Simmons w/ Butch Reed & Teddy Long vs. Steve Armstrong w/ Tracy Smothers

    Thanks for predicting again, Gorilla!

No one's losing to El Gigante in this timeline lol

A guy like Hansen by pinfall? Probably not, but matches can end in other ways.;)

Keep up the good work :)

Thanks, Stannis! And thanks for predicting again!

Just in case you snatch Taker :D

    Aren't you forgetting something, Trevor?

Ricky Morton w/Jeff Jarrett vs. Arn Anderson w/ Tully Blanchard

The young inexperienced Jeff Jarrett tries to counteract some Tully shenanigans on the outside but its all for nothing

Really enjoying your super specific predictions and thoughts, Reggie!

    Stan Hansen vs. El Gigante

Ricky Morton w/Jeff Jarrett vs. Arn Anderson w/ Tully Blanchard

Ron Simmons w/ Butch Reed & Teddy Long vs. Steve Armstrong w/ Tracy Smothers

    Thanks for predicting again, Element!

    1991 WCW? I'm on board!

Thanks for joining in, Josh! I appreciate your readership!

    Stan Hansen vs. El Gigante

Ricky Morton w/Jeff Jarrett vs. Arn Anderson w/ Tully Blanchard

Ron Simmons w/ Butch Reed & Teddy Long vs. Steve Armstrong w/ Tracy Smothers

    Thanks for predicting again, Satyr24!

Glad to see Morton and Jarrett show excellent chemistry as a team but what happens when Robert Gibson returns from injury? Will he be the odd man out? Will the 6 man tag team title come back? Will they name their team the Double J Express? Make sure you tune in and find out.

Haven't decided just yet, but it's a good problem to have as far as I'm concerned!

    Looking forward to following along!

Thanks, bonnie! Happy to have your readership!

  4. Some really good promos in your first show, Trevor! Writing promos was my favorite part of the '91 WWF diary I did for TEW 2016. Doing them for Savage and Warrior in particular was great fun. Anyway, let's give this prediction thing a shot:

    Haku Vs. The Big Bossman

    Crush Vs. Shawn Michaels

Power & Glory Vs. The Hart Foundation ©

"The Demon Of Death Valley" The Undertaker Vs. Tugboat

The Mountie Vs. "The Birdman" KoKo B. Ware

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper Vs. Mr. Perfect ©

"The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase Vs. "The Texas Tornado" Kerry Von Erich

"Macho King" Randy Savage and "Iraqi Turncoat" Sgt. Slaughter Vs. "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior

  5. I actually know very little about WCW during this time frame, besides the most commonly known stuff. With that said, I'm really digging this diary so far.

    Thanks, Reggie!

I don't know how he's behaving thus far in your game, but I'm holding out for a Buddy Landel push later in the year. IRL he's only about a year or so off from sorting out his life, was still young and still capable of going in the ring from what I've seen from his SMW run.

I havent' had any trouble out of Landel so far, and he's definitely underrated in my opinion. He didn't have the best look, but other than that he was great. I saw him in person several times for SMW events at one of the local high schools and he never failed to entertain.

  6. Ric Flair vs. Rick Steiner

    WCW World Television Championship

"Z-Man" Tom Zenk © vs. Larry Zbyszko

    Brian Pillman vs. Jimmy Garvin

Glad to have you back this episode, Element!

    WCW World Television Championship

"Z-Man" Tom Zenk © vs. Larry Zbyszko

I see a DQ finish with no title change

You think so? Thanks for predicting again, Satyr24!

    Ric Flair vs. Rick Steiner

If it were Scotty, I'd pick otherwise.

    WCW World Television Championship

"Z-Man" Tom Zenk © vs. Larry Zbyszko

    Train keeps a-rollin'!

    Brian Pillman vs. Jimmy Garvin

Maybe a botched Hayes interference finish.

Thanks for predicting again, Trevor! I'll be checking your diary out later this evening when I'm back from running some errands.

    Ric Flair vs. Rick Steiner

    WCW World Television Championship

Z-Man" Tom Zenk © vs. Larry Zbyszko

Thanks for joining in, Reggie! I appreciate your readership!

    Brian Pillman vs. Jimmy Garvin

Flyin' Brian, God rest his soul, could have been a megastar.

    Absolutely!

  7. You're seriously bringing back a ton of great memories.

Such an amazing roster as well, you have a ton of different options here.

I love me some Dan Spivey btw (and I have no clue why).

    Thanks, Munit!

Yeah, even with the restrictions I've placed on myself there are literal tons of great guys to sign and push.

Spivey was awesome as Waylon Mercy in 1995 for the WWF. That character had a TON of potential.

    Another good show my friend!

    Thanks, Jaysin!

Missed the predictions this time ink but I'll catch em next time. Good show.

No problem, Element. There will be plenty points available before this round of the prediction contest is over.

    WCW Saturday Night Predictions Card:

    Ric Flair vs. Rick Steiner

    WCW World Television Championship

"Z-Man" Tom Zenk © vs. Larry Zbyszko

    Brian Pillman vs. Jimmy Garvin

  8. Come on let's be honest when we think of Bam Bam we don't think of the Lawrence Taylor stuff we think of his ECW stuff :D

At the end of the day, it's your choice I'm still going to follow and enjoy the show but I've always seen Bam more WCW then WWF

I can remember his work as a member of The Jersey Triad, Fighting Raven and Hardcore Hak, Mike Awesome more then the stuff he did in WWF but maybe thats just me

Here's the thing though, other than the third list of exemptions, the only point of view taken into account is what Ted Turner's hypothetically would have been on January 1st, 1991. From his point of view, Bigelow had just left WCW after a second mediocre four month run in less than 2 years, both of which had paled in comparison to his WWF run a few years before that. Therefore, in this hypothetical scenario, I just think Turner would have considered Bigelow to be one of "Vince's guys" since Vince had accomplished more with him in one try than WCW had in two.

However, I could definitely see the argument that since Bigelow had been in WCW twice since the last time he was in the WWF, and Turner's got new guys running the show, that he would want to take another crack at someone as talented as Bigelow. It's all just so subjective.

    WCW Saturday Night Predictions Card:

    Ricky Steamboat vs. Buddy Landel

    Butch Reed vs. Tracy Smothers

    Stan Hansen vs. Ron Garvin

    Thanks for predicting!

    Ricky Steamboatvs. Buddy Landel

Would love to see you do the unthinkable and turn Ricky heel like he wanted to in '91/'92 WWF!

    Butch Reed vs. Tracy Smothers

Two undercard guys with good potential at this point imo.

    Stan Hansen vs. Ron Garvin

Wanna be a trend-setter? Make this a shoot fight lol

You should definitely check out my 1991 WWF diary then! ;)

  9. I really like this format!

    Steamboat

    Smothers[

    Hansen

Thanks, Stannis! And I appreciate you reading and predicting!

    Ricky Steamboat vs. Buddy Landel

    Butch Reed vs. Tracy Smothers

    Stan Hansen vs. Ron Garvin

Thanks for reading and predicting, KnowYourEnemy!

Great first show, ink625. Good to see Tully Blanchard back with the Horsemen. However, I disagree with you about Barry Windham being an odd fit for them. I assume this turns Windham into a face?

Thanks! As far as Windham goes, I don't know, maybe "odd fit" wasn't the best choice of words. He's certainly got the skills for it, I do know that much. But I guess I really just prefer him as a face and think he works better in the down to earth, hard-working, Texan role. And yes, he's definitely a face now, which admittedly also played into the decision, since I'm a little light on depth on the face side at the moment. I plan on fixing that fairly soon, but I didn't want to bring in tons of guys right off the bat.

With Parker headed to AJPW, will you be keeping Dale Veasey aka Lt. James Earl Wright? He doesn't seem to have much of a fit with the company outside of the State Patrol.

Yeah, I'll probably hang onto him as a job guy for a while, since he's got a few decent skills he could pass on to someone on the way up.

Sorry that you missed out on 'Sweet' Stan Lane. Having a return of the Midnight Express would definitely be a boost to the tag team division. But a lot of those wrestlers were definitely looking for more money than they deserve. Though isn't that what usually happened to WCW?

Well I guess I can let the cat out of the bag now, but yeah I was definitely bringing back the Express. One of the best teams of all-time! As far as the money goes, it likely wouldn't have been any kind of long-term detriment to the company, but I don't wanna start down that path or I'll have a roster of 200 by May '91.

Curious as to why Tommy Rich wasn't Ricky Morton's partner, other than for the storyline? The two of them had just beaten The Fabulous Freebirds at Starrcade 1990 the previous month.

Eh, it's just one of those "regime change" things, where I decided to ignore the recent past to do something I preferred. I'm definitely gonna do something with Rich, but I'm not 100% sure what just yet. Although I do have a few ideas.

If I'm making too many comments, sorry about that. But I would be remiss if I didn't mention the top ten thing. It's little touches like that which make a diary stand out for the time period. I appreciate that.

It's just the opposite, I really appreciate all the comments! The more the merrier!

    Ricky Steamboat vs. Buddy Landel

Tempted to pick the other Nature Boy but Steamboat is just that much better.

    Butch Reed vs. Tracy Smothers

I remember both wrestlers for tag teams more than singles wrestlers. Though, I think Hacksaw had a better singles run.

    Stan Hansen vs. Ron Garvin

Toughest pick of the night. I like the Man With The Hands Of Stone but Hansen just lost the United States title. Though I wonder if Hansen might lose due to being loyal to AJPW.

Unfortunately you're right, his loyalty to AJPW will require me to be very careful with how or how much I push him. They aren't exactly taking it easy on guys over there. Thanks for predicting again!

  11. I mean, don't get me wrong: I'm even more interested now in seeing who you're going to try and pick up, push and make stars out of. I'm thinking there might be a few guys from Japan and Mexico who you'll be considering...

For sure, but they may be a ways away. I'm certainly gonna sign some guys and use them right away, but I'm not gonna replace the entire roster in 3 or 4 months either. Although it is very tempting because that's a fairly top-heavy roster in that third post above.

I do love this time of year in both WCW and WWF. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it, especially with the restrictions you put on yourself. It would be so difficult for me to live up to them.

While there's definitely no shortage of great workers available for me to sign, so many of them aren't really a "fit" for WCW and many others need a lot of work from where they are when the save starts, so it's gonna be tricky for sure.

    WCW World Television Championship

Tom Zenk © vs. Bobby Eaton

I go back and forth on this one. So when that happens, why not pick a time limit draw? Of course, that's a staple ending for Television title matches. It might lead to a future rematch.

Yeah, it's crazy how often they used that ending, but I thought it worked well for the more "sports-based" feel they were going for at the time.

Thanks for reading and predicting, angeldelayette! Hope you'll follow along!

WCW United States Heavyweight Championship: Lex Luger © vs. Barry Windham

WCW World Tag Team Championship: Doom w/ Teddy Long © vs. Ricky Morton & A Mystery Partner

I'm likely wrong, but my assumption is you might run with a "they aren't as experienced together" excuse due to the mystery partner.

WCW World Television Championship: Tom Zenk © vs. Bobby Eaton

Dustin Rhodes vs. Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker

    Terry Funk vs. Dutch Mantel

Thanks for predicting Gorilla Monsoon! Hope you'll follow along!

    Important Note:

Okay, so I intended to start posting shows in this diary this week, but in my haste to get started I overlooked a bit of an issue with the mod I'm using and fixing it has got me a few days behind. So the first show will now be posted Monday, assuming no more mod problems arise. I apologize for a delay right off the bat, but better I found the problem now than 2 or 3 months into the save.

  12. Just started a WWF 1991 diary myself, so REALLY looking forward to this! Best of luck, dude!

Thanks, Trevor! I had a really good time writing a 1991 WWF dynasty for TEW 2016 and I expect you will too. With the right free agent signings you could easily assemble one of the best rosters in wrestling history. Thanks for your predictions and good luck with your diary!

    Some thoughts:

I firmly believe that Big Boss Man, Road Warriors, Roddy Piper, Shane Douglas, Ted DiBiase and Texas Tornado would be fine to hire. They might be ‘Titans’ now, but they’re all have NWA history, Mid-Atlantic history or JCP history.

As for the free agents… Bad News Allen is Canada / Japan for me, Blackjack Mulligan is a southern name, Kamala is from Georgia, One Man Gang worked in the South and Wendi Richter is kind of useful if you’re going to do anything with women’s wrestling. None of those mean much to WCW though in the long term so, so its whatever.

I don't really disagree with anything you said in principle, and yes, I think you could easily justify taking quite a few workers off my exempt lists. However, I put a lot of thought into who should or shouldn't be "eligible" to be hired, and decided that if I wasn't going to be really strict, then there didn't seem to be much point in having any restrictions at all. Which I understand is an entirely different conversation in and of itself.

The third section is mostly fine. Jacqueline did work for WCW, and Ivory was an indie girl for years on end so I’d relent on those if women’s wrestling matters to you at all.

Well, the third section is really it's own thing that has nothing to do with who they did or didn't work for and when. Like I mentioned in the opening post, it was kinda just tacked on at the last second for a bit of an added challenge.

Anyway, I do appreciate the feedback and thanks for checking out my diary!

  13. I absolutely love booking this time. The idea of crowning the first WCW World Heavyweight champion is just too exciting to not pass up. Can't wait to see this evolve :)

Thanks, Munit! I just hope I can do it justice. I rarely missed WCW growing up, but generally preferred the WWF, so I'll have to do a bit more research than usual for this one to ring true.

What a unique ruleset/game world. Have fun.

Thanks, Texasrangers13! I really wanted to try something different to mix things up a bit and it's definitely gonna be a bit tricky. But there's still so many great workers I can sign that I should never be short on talent even without the WWF guys.

Loved your 91 WWF diary and can't wait to see what you do here!

Thanks, Element! Glad to have you back!

    Diary Show Posting Schedule

Shows will only be posted on weekdays between 11 am and 6 pm EST. No shows will ever be posted outside those time frames, so if it's a potential posting day and it's past 6 pm EST with no new show posted, then you can be sure that nothing will be posted until at least the next weekday. This keeps me from having to give constant updates about potential posting times on the occasions where I've fallen behind, and prevents other diaries with actual show updates from being "bumped" down from the top of the board unnecessarily. I will sometimes post other stuff outside of these scheduled hours though, such as feedback requests and prediction contest related info.

TITANS Need Not Apply: A 1991 WCW Diary

Extremely frustrated with the company's recent performance, and tired of playing second fiddle to Vince McMahon and the WWF, WCW Owner Ted Turner made two moves in the early morning hours of New Year's Day, 1991.

The first was to fire Jim Herd from his job as Executive Vice President of WCW and replace him with Jim Ross. It was no secret that practically no one involved with WCW cared much for Jim Herd, and when you pair that with the fact that business had been on a steady decline since the spring of 1990, replacing Herd with the well-liked and more than qualified Jim Ross was a no-brainer.

The second was to go back to the last thing that showed any semblance of actually working, and reinstall Ric Flair as head booker of WCW, a job he had just resigned from in February 1990. So why would Flair agree to go back to a job he had just quit less than a year earlier? Because the only reason he quit that job in the first place, despite business almost immediately trending up once he had it, was because he absolutely could not get along with then WCW Executive Vice President Jim Herd, who ultimately had final say on any decisions Flair made.

Convinced he'd made the two best decisions he possibly could've made for the future of the company, Turner wrapped up the first day of 1991 by giving Jim Ross and Ric Flair one "rule" they must follow as a condition of their new jobs:

    N2TYfSa.jpgLGqiWsl.jpgCIBDAdH.jpg

Turner: Oh, I can't believe I almost forgot this. I don't want you to hire any Titans.

    Ross: Titans, sir?

Turner: Yeah, you know Titans. As in Titan Sports. You know, McMahon's guys. I don't want any of 'em here. I'm sure some of 'em are great guys or gals, but I want to build our own thing here. And just so we're clear, I mean wrestlers, referees, announcers, managers, agents, interviewers, the lot of 'em. If they're McMahon guys, I don't want 'em.

Flair: Uh, that's not gonna be easy, Ted.

Turner: I'm confident you two can handle it! Don't let me down!

So first things first, I want to make it clear that I know this scenario is a bit ridiculous. It makes no sense from a business standpoint to refuse to employ people who can help your company improve and grow. Especially if those are your exact goals. But I was looking for a way to shake things up a bit and this is what I settled on.

So you're probably wondering what qualifies someone as a McMahon guy, or "Titan", for the purposes of this diary? Well that's actually really simple, if not a mouthful to explain. A worker will be considered a McMahon guy, or "Titan", if they meet one of the following three criteria:

1.) They're employed by the WWF when the save starts on January 1st, 1991. A few examples of workers who fit this criterion are Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. Please click "spoiler" for a complete list of workers who meet this condition.

3.) This final criterion isn't realistic at all, since Ted Turner can't predict the future and therefore workers who meet the first two criteria would be the only workers in 1991 that would be "WWF" guys to him. However, this one was added purely for an additional challenge were I to make it far enough into the future for most of these guys to debut. Anyway, onto the third and final criterion:

    - Male wrestlers, whether active at save start or yet to debut, who fit neither of the first two criteria, but who would go on to hold at least 2 WWF/E World, World Heavyweight(Big Gold Belt) or Universal Championships.

    - Female wrestlers, whether active at save start or yet to debut, who fit neither of the first two criteria, but who would go on to hold at least 2 WWF/E Divas, Women's, Raw Women's or Smackdown Women's Championships.

*****Workers who worked for WCW before working for the WWF will be exempt from this criterion, e.g., Steve Austin and Triple H. Also, prior work as a jobber is not considered for this criterion, which allows for both Mick Foley's exclusion from the list, and Edge's inclusion on it, for a couple examples.*****

My goal with these restrictions is threefold:

1.) To make the game a bit more challenging.

2.) To force myself to use some different workers than I otherwise would, because without these restrictions there's little doubt that I would sign all the usual suspects away from the WWF at the first opportunity. And if I add Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Undertaker, Ted DiBiase, Jake Roberts, Mr. Perfect and Shawn Michaels to my WCW roster, then I might as well have just started a WWF save.

3.) To keep my roster size from getting out of control, which should directly increase the likelihood of this diary lasting longer than my 1991 WWF diary did on TEW 2016. Because what happened there was I burned myself out trying to manage a huge roster of all the great WWF guys I already had, and the absurd amount of WCW workers that I also signed. And that just led to a save that ended up being way more work than fun. And when a save is more work than fun I lose interest in a hurry, and that save and it's accompanying diary are out the window. I don't want that to happen here.

  18. This is probably something stupid I'm missing, but..

Can someone tell me how to designate a picture as a 'free picture' to get it to show up in the editor? I get how to import free pictures from other databases, but I don't see how to designate a picture as a free pic?

1.) Copy the pics you want to use as free pics into the game's people folder. It should be roughly(exactly??) here:

    Program Files(x86)>GDS>TEW2020>Pictures>Default>People

**If you're not using the Default database, then the Default portion of that file path would be the name of whatever database you are using.**

You can name them whatever you want, but I recommend something like "Free Worker 1", "Free Worker 2" , etc. Just something that's easy to track for you.

2.) Once that's done go into the main editor and select "Free Pictures" from the dropdown menu.

3.) Click the "Add New Item" button and click on the picture on the top left of that new pop up. This will bring up a list of all the pics in the folder where you copied the free pics you want to use earlier.

4.) From that list select the first file name of a pic you want to use as a free one and click "Use This Picture." Then you just fill in the info for the type of worker you want the pic to generate with and click "Save" or "Save and Continue."

If you choose "Save" the window will simply close out. However, if you choose "Save and Continue," the game will automatically select the next unused free pic in the folder, allowing you to skip the step of manually selecting a picture every time.

  19. I haven't tried it yet, but the newest patch(1.11) lists these fixes:

    - Added a limit to how much popularity a company could gain per month, based on size, to limit the exploiting of constant schedules.

    - Altered the rules so that when a company uses a constant / heavy frequency schedule of events then the fans recognise that and attendances for those events use the figures for weekly events, not annual.

    - Added attendance penalties for over-saturation of shows in a single region for companies of Medium size or above to stop the tactic of sitting in one place and running many shows in a row.
