Shun Skywalker tried his best to get in the head of Minoura and Lee, reminding them of their time together in Masquerade (and trying to gaslight Jason Lee into thinking Minoura was the reason Masquerade was divided). Both guys work as the biggest man in the room. Despite having challenge for the Dream Gate for years and years, tonight was not Yoshida's night as he came up just short yet again. To put a question mark on his claim that flash pins are not legitimate, KAI caught Yoshida with the Authorized Gannosuke Clutch for the finish and to put a bow on this feud. Things only got worse for Takashi Yoshida. Naruki Doi and Kota Minoura entered the ring and announced that their unit will indeed be starting with three people: Naruki Doi, Kota Minoura... and Kaito Ishida! Yoshida, a blubbering mess, noted that he was very macho and deserved a place in the group. Doi disagreed, noting that new DoiYoshi was a lot of fun but it was time to move on. Instead, we had a shorter, but well-worked, clean title change.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:14px;"> </span></div><span style="font-size:14px;">Yuki Yoshioka looked like a star immediately upon stepping through the curtain. Questions circulated wondering how Yoshioka would look and how the crowd responded to his first match since the apuestas in December. It turned out that physically Yoshioka was in the best shape of his career, the Korakuen Hall crowd bought into him. Yoshioka’s sound wrestling was his hallmark out of the Class of 2016, and everything he did in the match showed that he earned the Susumu Yokosuka future comp.</span> <span style="font-size:14px;">SB KENTo & H.Y.O had easy chemistry and at points felt like a long-time Twin Gate Champion team, which was somewhat remarkable given that their title win was almost all H.Y.O and that was their first real match of a team. R・E・D remained in control of Dragon Dia for the vast majority of the match, getting Yoshioka the key hot tag and the finish. Dia & Yoshioka’s had some nice combinations.</span> <div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:14px;text-align:justify;">Dragongate isn’t dipping their toes in the Unit Shuffle pond with some simmering and slow shake-ups. R・E・D less than 24 hours ago had a moment where they held all four DG championships, and now KAI is their sole champion. The 2022 Unit Shuffle is a cannonball in the deep end, covering nearly the entire promotion in one dive. The work here was strong, Dia and Yoshioka will stick together and show a bit of longevity before their bigger feuds in the future.</span></div></font></font> <font face="Open Sans"><img alt="" src="https://i.imgur.com/WMiO8BK.png" style="max-width:100%;"> <img style="max-width:100%;" src="https://i.imgur.com/kJfpk5W.png" alt=""></font> <font color="#121212" size="1" style="font-family:Open Sans;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;">Kaito Ishida vs. Takumi Hayakawa</font> <font style="font-family:Open Sans;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;">2. Where the remainder of the FUTURE class is having competitive matches against veterans or facing their inspirations, Hayakawa is fodder for established roster members to have an easy night.</span></div></font> <img src="https://i.imgur.com/GdumbDz.png" style="max-width:100%;" alt=""><img src="https://i.imgur.com/YiGhSkF.png" style="max-width:100%;" alt=""> <img alt="" src="https://i.imgur.com/cV2HSGT.png" style="max-width:100%;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/KgCEEVg.png" style="max-width:100%;" alt=""> <font color="#00b616" size="1" style="font-family:"font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;">Natural Vibes</font><font size="1" style="font-family:Open Sans;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;color:rgb(18, 18, 18);"> (Jacky "Funky" Kamei & U-T) vs. Strong Machine J & Kenichiro Arai</font> <font style="font-family:Open Sans;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;">3. The first second-generation wrestler in Dragon System history, SMJ was booked as an absolute monster as a rookie, but since has been snakebit by injuries and a lack of evolution. The Strong Machine J we saw in Korakuen was virtually the exact same as we saw in his debut three years ago.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:14px;"> </span></div><span style="font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="text-align:justify;">He fits teaming with Kenichiro Arai, Jae and K-ness remarked on commentary about their complementary styles. However, when you have someone so trapped in cement on the opposite side of a Natural Vibes team brimming with life and excitement, slumming it with Araken brings these simmering issues to the surface. The work here was solid. JFK and U-T have had great matches since JFK’s elevation in November. Kamei got a rare finish with Yoshino’s move and SMJ remains exactly where he was yesterday, six months ago, and since his debut.</span></div></span></font></font> <img style="max-width:100%;" src="https://i.imgur.com/PBterto.png" alt=""><img alt="" src="https://i.imgur.com/iYN1JxT.png" style="max-width:100%;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/nYf5Qas.png" style="max-width:100%;" alt=""><img alt="" src="https://i.imgur.com/Lez2bTa.png" style="max-width:100%;"><img alt="" src="https://i.imgur.com/2OtOj8c.png" style="max-width:100%;"> <img alt="" style="max-width:100%;" src="https://i.imgur.com/9JnZ76n.png"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/QMCSOyf.png" style="max-width:100%;" alt=""><img alt="" src="https://i.imgur.com/km2I1KW.png" style="max-width:100%;"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/Pn9l17w.png" style="max-width:100%;" alt=""><img src="https://i.imgur.com/QSSfwSe.png" style="max-width:100%;" alt=""> <font size="1" color="#121212" style="font-family:Open Sans;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;">Dragon Kid, Ben-K, Keisuke Okuda, Kagetora, Ultimo Dragon vs. Masaaki Mochizuki, Don Fujii, Shuji Kondo, Yasushi Kanda, Gamma</font> <font style="font-family:Open Sans;font-style:normal;font-weight:normal;color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;">4. It’s a bigger roster, but the company doesn’t want a long-time native fan disappointed that they bought a ticket but didn’t get to see their favorite wrestler. There used to be match ones with teams of Kenichiro Arai, Punch Tominaga and Yosuke Santa Maria, but now these matches feel like everyone getting some exercise after a holiday meal. No one really took the match off. High End and the veterans all did trademark offense and everything flowed. If there are matches in wrestling that are difficult watches for small detail work or huge backstories, then you need to have easy matches where the viewer can turn their brain off. He has quickly improved, has the certain pluck one’d want to see in a Dragongate teenager, and he worked really well with Shimizu.</span> <span style="font-size:14px;">The former Masquerade is in an interesting position because it’s not very clear what the road forward is with La Estrella. Unfortunately, Okuda, who oddly enough was Fuda’s main inspiration for entering the pro wrestling field, ate him up in this match. It didn’t seem like Okuda was in the mood to give this kid anything. This match just didn’t fit the Dragongate spirit. There was no heart. As in, Fuda started turning blue. Okuda locked on his signature sleeper hold that normally leads to a penalty kick and the pin, but the penalty kick never happened. Okuda wrenched in this choke and Fuda went out immediately. Referee Yagi did a poor job of officiating, as Fuda’s arm dropped three times and Yagi still refused to call for the bell. It’s hard to put into words just how good Don Fujii is. Every once in awhile, he gets something to do and he always owns it. He is going to turn Shoya Sato, the 29-year-old judo standout, into a formidable player sooner rather than later. They’ve been paired off with one another for a month now, and each time, Sato comes a little closer to putting down the veteran. Fujii got caught in the cross armbreaker, but used his 20+ year career to his advantage, flipping Sato over and pinning him with Fujii’s rarely used Gedo Clutch.</span></div><div style="text-align:right;"><font color="#121212" face="Open Sans"><span style="font-size:14px;"> </span></font></div><font color="#121212" face="Open Sans"><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="font-size:14px;text-align:justify;">Takuma Fujiwara continues to jump off the screen. His bumps are hellacious. It’s not like this group of veterans need any help making their offense look great, but Fujiwara takes their offense to the next level. He violently flew across the ring after a Shuji Kondo shoulder block. His offense, while nowhere near being fully developed, is already incredibly interesting. He moves around the ring like a junior heavyweight, but once his body fills out and he’s able to bulk up, he’ll have the perfect body type to succeed in this promotion.</span></div></font><div style="text-align:right;"> </div><font face="Open Sans"><div style="text-align:right;"><span style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;">The intensity that was on display from the entrances through the post-match when Fujii jumped the rookies from behind, only to have the rookies chase him down and stomp a mudhole in him in the entryway, was all beautiful. It was the culmination of multiple stories, starting with the transformation of VerserK to Antias in January 2018. After two years of total domination, the heel unit, then led by Shingo Takagi, was passed down to the new generation of T-Hawk, El Lindaman, and Eita. T-Hawk, at the time, was a fledgling main eventer, who despite multiple opportunities to prove himself, was still not reliable on the biggest stages. Lindaman, as brilliant as he can be, was at a low point and looked like he was plateauing in the midcard. Then there was Eita, an unproven commodity who had failed to capitalize on his white-hot run in the summer of 2016. The future of Dragongate was being passed the baton and it didn’t look like any of them were ready for it.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"> </div><span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">Five months later, T-Hawk and Lindaman would split from the company, making an already-struggling unit totally meaningless. Eita trudged along as their leader throughout the summer, but it seemed Dragongate had hit an all-time low with their lead heel unit.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"></div> <span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">In an effort to make it his own and remove himself from the stench that was left by the OWE split earlier that year, Eita rebranded Antias in September 2018 and quickly recruited freelancer Kazma Sakamoto and returning Dragongate icon PAC to join his ranks. Almost overnight, the unit—now known as R・E・D—felt like it had life.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"></div> <span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">Dragongate was at a tipping point in 2018 and the heel unit represented every problem that the promotion could be facing in the immediate future. The veterans involved were stale, but the youth weren’t ready for the challenge.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"> </div><span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">In 2022, there are no more reservations about the future of this promotion.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"> </div><span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">The youth, which in this case we’ll recognize as H.Y.O, SB KENTo, Shun Skywalker, and Hip Hop Kikuta, are all ready for this spot. The match, which was primarily wrestled by H.Y.O and Skywalker due to their partners refusing to tag in because of their prior antics, concluded with Minoura whacking Skywalker across the face with the R・E・D box. Of course, this wasn’t to signal a Minoura heel turn. It was comeuppance for the month of torture that Skywalker had put the rest of Masquerade through.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"> </div><span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">Skywalker demanded an apology from Minoura, but Minoura refused. Skywalker’s performance here was enthralling. He’s now in the highest pantheon of wrestling psychopaths. He’s every bad stereotype of a deranged significant other.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"></div> <span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">Shun Skywalker is the living embodiment of gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"></div> <span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">H.Y.O was thrilled, but Eita and Ishida refused to get excited about their title win. This led to a confrontation in the ring with the members of R・E・D with Ishida claiming that H.Y.O was now out of the unit, but at that moment, the rest of the heels jumped Ishida and Eita. Skywalker joined the fray, turning heel and proudly aligning himself with H.Y.O and R・E・D.</div></span><div style="text-align:right;"></div> <span style="color:rgb(18, 18, 18);font-size:14px;"><div style="text-align:right;">The heels attempted to conclude their show-closing promo, but GM Ryo Saito noted that SB KENTo, the current Open the Brave Gate Champion, had yet to wrestle. 23. Hey everyone! I have been super busy at work lately and haven't had as much time to book and write. I'll get to the Korakuen Hall shows soon. In the meantime, I highly suggest you check out this 2022 Dragongate Primer written by my friends Case and Mike over at Voices of Wrestling. Everything you need to know about this glorious promotion and a great way to learn a bit more about the wrestlers featured in this diary. There's also some great matches linked in that article.
