The newsletter includes, as usual, the results from the King of the Ring event. But there will be a further post with an elongated transcript for the actual King of the Ring match, just in case anyone happens to be interested! First of all, here is the longer match write-up from the King of the Ring battle royal.
After the rules of the King of the Ring match were announced to the live crowd, it was time to see who had drawn #1. Petey Barnes came out as the #1 entrant. Eric Future was #2. The two Future X partners stared at each other while the crowd spurred them on to fight it out. Barnes looked ready to go, but Future kept backing off, motioning that they should wait and work together. Eventually Barnes reluctantly agreed, only to be sucker punched by Future. Future was on the front foot until the third entrant arrived. Adam Matravers drew #3. The crowd went wild as the former ROF star made his return to the promotion. He immediately helped Barnes, who was teetering over the top rope. Most fans in the audience seemed to remember the history Barnes and Matravers had together as The Show Stealers, former tag champs in ROF. Future didn’t know what had hit him as the Show Stealers worked him over, and a double dropkick sent him flying out. Eric Future eliminated. Matravers and Barnes high fived as the crowd cheered…and then went at it at a fierce pace until… Razor Valentine came in at #4. The martial artist took Barnes down straight away with a brutal spinning heel kick. He then went to work on Matravers. Valentine actually did a great job of keeping one man grounded at all times to avoid being double teamed throughout the 2 minutes. Johnny Highspot entered at #5. The High and Low man entered riskily by coming off the top turnbuckle to land a cross body on Matravers. The four men in the ring continued to duke it out until Nigel Svensson entered at #6. The Wigan student immediately made his presence felt and mainly worked over Razor Valentine, whilst the high-fliers in the ring went after one another. Jonni Lowlife was next in at #7. To everyone’s surprise he went straight after his High and Low tag team partner Johnny Highspot. The two were involved in some high paced action before Highspot clotheslined Lowlife over the top. Lowlife hung on but was on the ring apron and tried to suplex Highspot out from there. But as he did so, Highspot pulled Lowlife with him and both were eliminated. Johnny Highspot and Jonni Lowlife eliminated. They walked to the back in good spirits together though. Walter Morgan entered at #8. He went straight over to help Nigel Svensson, landing some heavy duty blows on Razor Valentine. The pair then switched their attention to Matravers and Barnes, who were still going after each other on the other side of the ring. As the four men battled near the ropes, Valentine saw his chance to eliminate Morgan quickly. He charged towards the Wigan native, only for Morgan to backdrop Valentine out of there. Razor Valentine eliminated. Don Henderson drew #9. The Highland Hitman came in all fired up and went after Svensson straight away, whilst Morgan was still battling Matravers and Barnes. These five continued to fight it out whilst guest wrestler Insane Machine entered at #10. Machine, who is a colleague and sometime partner of UK Dragon in WLW, showed some great moves to the ROF crowd and mainly went after the tiring Barnes and Matravers. Henderson was desperately trying to hold out against Svensson and Morgan. Jack Giedroyc entered at #11 to a huge pop. At this point, Henderson was hanging on for dear life against Svensson and Morgan, and Giedroyc snuck up behind them and not only helped get Henderson out of there, but also eliminated Svensson in the process. Don Henderson and Nigel Svensson eliminated. He and Morgan then went at it. Meanwhile Insane Machine had managed to floor Matravers and was beating down Petey Barnes. Sander Laine came in at #12. The young Hungarian, making his first major show appearance since joining ROF, showed some great technical skill as he went up against Matravers. With Barnes isolated from Matravers, Insane Machine managed to get ‘X Factor’ up and over the top rope to the floor. Petey Barnes eliminated. Rolling Johnny Stones entered at #13. He started wailing away on everyone he could find, but soon paid for that approach when everyone turned back his way to get their revenge. However after a moment the wrestlers went back to trading blows with each other – Stones with Matravers, Morgan with Giedroyc, Laine with Insane Machine. Keith Adams entered at #14. ‘The Law’ immediately went over to help Sander Laine against Insane Machine, and the pair of ROF mainstays managed to get the guest wrestler over the top rope, albeit with great difficulty. Machine held on to the top rope on the apron as they pounded him, but eventually had to give in. Insane Machine eliminated. Morgan and Giedroyc were battling hard, and Morgan nearly had Giedroyc out, only for Giedroyc to skin the cat. Matravers was still hanging on in there and having a fascinating battle with Stones. The final man entered at #15 – JD Morgan. Morgan immediately went to help Giedroyc against Walter Morgan, but Giedroyc was so beaten down at this stage that they never really got to double team to get Walter out. After getting rid of Insane Machine, Laine and Adams went after one another, and Adams soon got the advantage, lifting Laine over the top rope to the floor. Sander Laine eliminated. Giedroyc was up by now but left the Morgans to it whilst Keith Adams was on his own. Adams put up a brave fight against the DAVE man, but Giedroyc had too much for him and eliminated the real-life law man. Keith Adams eliminated. Meanwhile Matravers had Stones down in the centre of the ring. He made a fatal error, going up top to execute a high risk move. No sooner had he reached the top turnbuckle than Giedroyc knocked him off, sending Matravers to the floor with a nasty bump. Adam Matravers eliminated. The bell immediately rang to signify that the final four men - Jack Giedroyc, Walter Morgan, JD Morgan and Rolling Johnny Stones - were in the ring and eliminations were now by pin or submission only. Unfortunately for Giedroyc, he was still leaning on the ropes checking out the prone Matravers when Walter Morgan snuck up behind him and rolled him up immediately for a pinfall. Jack Giedroyc eliminated. Giedroyc was out of it, and the 2 Morgans and Stones were left. The three men then went on a typical triple threat match for the next few minutes, with each getting in their shots. That was until Walter Morgan got JD Morgan in the Wigan Wrench. JD struggled to get to the ropes, but no sooner had he done so and Walter had to break the hold, than Stones nailed a brainbuster on the hurting JD and was able to pin him. JD Morgan eliminated. It was down to Rolling Johnny Stones and Walter Morgan. The two men battled it out for a few minutes, with each trying to score numerous pinfalls. Stones eventually went for another brainbuster, only for Morgan to counter into an inside cradle for an incredibly near fall. However Stones was getting the upper hand and finally did nail his brainbuster for the clean pinfall. Walter Morgan eliminated. Rolling Johnny Stones was the 2009 King of the Ring.
And now here are the Short Fuse show results and ratings for September.
Good to see Merle back on top. I maintain it's impossible to run RoF for any length of time without marking for Merle...
O'Curle is great. Now it remains to be seen whether or not he can maintain the kind of ratings UK Dragon was getting at the top of the card as champion. That's the acid test for him now.
I know High and Low had that shock (albeit short lived) Tag reign but for me that felt like a shock for a sake of being a shock and there still the mid-level team who gets an occasional title shot, just to stop things from becoming repetitive.
It wasn't really a shock for the sake of it. The original plan at the event they won the belts was for G-Force to win the titles in the 3-way match with Warriors of Honour (the then champs) and High and Low. Matt Gauge broke his ankle just before the event, so I had to change plan. The second incident that occurred at the same time was that Burning EXILE's short term deal was up and he wanted a guaranteed midcard title run. He'd already asked for that (and got it) on his previous renewal, which is when he was Talisman champ. I didn't realise that I'd have to give him a 2nd reign, hoping the title he was already holding at renewal time would do him. I'd already played hot potato with the Talisman title previously and didn't really want him to drop and regain that belt quickly. So with the tag title picture being a bit messed up, I decided that would be the belt he'd get in tandem with Greg Gauge, setting up his disappearance (because I had to drop him before he wanted a new title every 3 months!). And at the same time I didn't really want EXILE and Gauge to beat Warriors outright for the gold in case it made the Warriors suddenly seem weak. So yeah...that was the reasoning behind the ultra quick High and Low title reign. And to give them an albeit brief moment on top because I felt they were probably the most deserving wrestlers on the roster who had never held an ROF title to that point.

ROF Talisman Title Billy Robinson © vs Nigel Svensson Svensson appears to the home-grown future of your promotion and may well go on to be a key figure and I predict he will hold this belt sometime during next year, but I think he'll come up short in first title challenge. Future X & Adam Matravers vs Warriors of Honour & Kevin Jones It's highly likely that we will see the death of Future-X and the rebirth of the Showstealers in this match, and the Warriors/Jones will be there to take advantage of the tension in the opposite corner. Don Henderson vs Rolling Johnny Stones 100 % agree with what Apu said ROF Tag Team Titles G-Force © vs Par Excellence Routine defence for G-Force, what exactly did the french twins do to earn a title shot ? JD Morgan vs Walter Morgan (Draw) I'm going to go a draw between these two, with a final blow-off match being set up next month. I'll stick by my guns regarding this feud and that Walter ultimately needs to come out on top, as he has more of a long term future, but you've done a fine job of stretching this feud out to last through the entire second half of the year. ROF Championship Merle O’Curle © vs UK Dragon O'Curle will cement his second title reign by beating the former champion.
Routine defence for G-Force, what exactly did the french twins do to earn a title shot ?
Not a lot, if I'm honest. Don't much like running the same matches month after month, so just threw them in there for a change at this stage, although they've had the better win/loss record of the other teams (i.e. not High and Low or Warriors of Honour) in the Short Fuse shows over the past few months, so I could theoretically say that they've moved upped the ranks. And their in-game momentum is good - they both have around C momentum, which is equal to the current champs and the Warriors, and far better than High and Low. But then I know that in-game momentum doesn't always translate to diary momentum! :) I warn you now - I'm a few months ahead in game - and the tag situation doesn't exactly improve too much! It's my current game bug-bear - well, that and not really being able to afford to move up to cult!!

Billy Robinson has been champion for over 6 months now, and holds singles victories over each of his opponents in this match. Both Kevin Jones and Nigel Svensson have quietly been building momentum and earning respect over the past few months and are genuine challengers. For Don Henderson it is another chance – the Last Man Standing bout at Holocaust in July was his last one-on-one shot at Billy Robinson. But now he gets another go in the 4-way. Can he take his chance? Eric Future vs Petey Barnes Future X has slowly been falling apart in recent months. Eric Future tagged with Greg Gauge, to Petey Barnes’ chagrin. Future then suckered Petey Barnes at King of the Ring when they were drawn 1 and 2 in the match, and was upset at Barnes and former partner Adam Matravers teaming up on him. Things came to a head last month when Future walked out in a 6-man tag, causing a defeat for his team, when he thought Barnes was again showing preference to former partner Matravers over him. Now he wants to face Barnes, a match which Barnes has reluctantly accepted. Which of the Future X members will come out on top? ROF Tag Team Titles 4-way Elimination G-Force © vs High and Low vs Par Excellence vs Warriors of Honour Whilst Future X battle amongst themselves, 4 steady teams battle it out over the tag championship. Morgan is sore at missing out on the ROF Championship match – this time last year he was defending his ROF title in the main event and a year on he isn’t even in the match. He is looking for a victory to boost his position in ROF again. Matravers meanwhile has impressed on his return to ROF. But a strong showing in the King of the Ring match ultimately meant little, his match with UK Dragon at Molotov was stopped and declared a draw, and he was on the losing side in 6-man action last month when one of his partners walked out. Rolling Johnny Stones is still hungry for the gold that has so far eluded him on his ROF return, and has taken part in the two best matches of the year in ROF. G-Force to continue to retain untill the reformation of The Showstealers. Barnes beat Future proving that he doens't need him anymore but Matravers takes a lss to Morgan and decides to go back to tag team action. O'Curle continues to dominate against any odds.
