Prologue Comment: 21 more posts after this, and we hit 1,000. Who would have figured? I doubt even a great mind like Julius Caesar would predict that amount of posts. Thanks fellas At the top of the show, the WCW-ised version of Evenflow by Pearl Jam begins, meaning only one thing, the arrival of the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho. The Champion steps forth, with the WCW World Heavyweight Championship around his waist, as he gestures to the crowd, and then flicks the nWo signal. The arena goes dark, as only a gold spotlight surround Jericho as he walks to the ring, pumping his fist at anyone who cares. Once in the ring, this Indianapolis crowd voices thier disapproval for the Champion, who starts to look frustrated, before with a voice of anger he raises the microphone. "What the hell is wrong with you people?" He asks. "For the last eight or nine months, I have withstood everyone this god forsaken company could throw at me to remain YOUR WCW World... Heavyweight... Champion! And this... MY SHOW... Thursday Jericho... here in redneck central..." Which of course, earns a poignant round of hurled abuse... "Which I bring to you out of the goodness of my heart, as your paragon of good virtue, and I get this response? When you all KNOW that no one can possibly take this Championship off of m.." Just then, the slow tapping Mexican beat of 'Latino Heat' Eddie Guerrero hits, and the former WCW Television Champion steps forth beneath the curtain. He has a shrewd, devious smile on his face as he walks down to the bottom of the ramp, followed by pyros. He jumps over the top rope, and goes to each of two alternate turnbuckles to wager an indifferent but strong reaction from the Indiana fans. He stands opposite Jericho, and looks the Champion up and down with an arrogant, confident smile on his face. "Esse, you cannot possibly be seeing straight," Guerrero begins. "Just when have you stepped in this very ring with me, esse? Huh? You've been flinching the Latino faction of WCW for the past year, man..." "I beat Rey Mysterio Jr," Jericho retorts. "Esse, Rey Mysterio Jr is a great wrestler, there is no doubt about that. But look at who you are standing opposite. A second generation superstar, the best wrestler from south of the border. And how many shots have you given me at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, esse?.." "Just you listen up right now, Eddie," Jericho says. "You honestly think you can just waltz down into MY ring on MY show and defend an apology for having NEVER earned a shot at MY Championship?" "Esse, never earned a shot? By way of defences, I am one of the longest standing WCW Television Champions in history. You may think I'm a mere peasant, but the fact is I took on all comers. You are just a phoney, holmes. You claim that you take on all comers, but when a world class all around wrestler, who has battled all over the world, comes into the ring, esse, you run scared. Just like you will with Chris Benoit, no doubt." "Junior, I don't care who you are, and I really doubt you have a valid green card no less, but I don't care for your tone of voice..." "Why don't you do something about it, holmes?" "Why, I think I might.." BANG! What the heck? Curt Hennig had come from the crowd with a steel chair, and just blasted Eddie Guerrero over the back of the head! Jericho smiles, as if this was all a set up, before the Outsiders, that's right, both 'Big Sexy' Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, and 'K-Dawg' Konnan race down to the ring and continue to stomp a mudhole into Eddie Guerrero's prone body. "Just like I said... '''''''holmes'''''," Jericho says cynically, "Its' time we fight back nWo style," he carries on as the beat down continues. "People thought the nWo was splitting, but the only thing that's splitting Eddie is your ribs..." To cap off the instrumental rip offs, a similar song to Come as You Are by Nirvana burns out across the arena, as Raven, the WCW Television Champion races to the ring with his trusty kendo stick. Curt Hennig doesn't see him coming, and Raven slides into the ring and cracks the stick over the back of the head. Hall charges in, one to the ribs for him, and he joins Hennig in rolling out of the ring. Jericho and Nash realise the fire in Raven's eyes and roll out of the ring, leaving Konnan dumbfounded to cop an Evenflow DDT! Raven dares Jericho and Nash to come back into the ring, but they choose not to, walking back up the ramp way. Raven sits in the corner, and grabs a microphone, as the crowd goes nuts for him. "What the hell was the meaning of all this? What the hell was this all about?" 'Iron' Mike Tenay asks in commentary. "Fans, this is chaos, we are going to go to a break, but when we come back, let's get some fall out from this ugly altercation here on Thunder." ----------------------------------------- When we return, 'Latino Heat' Eddie Guerrero is on his backside, having barely come to, and is asking the EMTs what happened. They inform him, and point to Raven, who sits still on the bottom turnbuckle with a microphone in his hand. Guerrero looks on cryptically, wondering why Raven just saved him. To which he answers. "What about me? What about Raven? What about the crowd here tonight, and what about you... Eddie Guerrero," Raven begins. "You know, over the years I've received my fair share of beat downs, and tonight Eddie, with you the legacy carried on. That's what we call the school of hard knocks, thats what we call the most dangerous way to make a living in the world. And nothing.. NOTHING... is tougher than THIS WCW Television Championship. Every Nitro, every Thunder, every Pay-Per-View, this belt is defended. No matter the broken bones, the twists, the sprains, the contusions, the bruises, the head trauma, the inability to sleep at night due to the continual pain. No, there is no rest. For this Championship is as much a test of skill as it is a testament to your will power to defy adversity." Raven takes the Championship from his waist, and flings it across the ring, in between Guerrero and Raven. "And as the WCW Television Champion, it is my job to acknowledge the legacy of those true greats of this belt. And Eddie Guerrero, you are right. You are an absolute great of this belt. Your Championship reign was incredible." Raven begins to clap, and the fans seem to join him. Eddie looks around, dumb founded. "And while I have a legacy of being on the end of beat downs, most of those were through my own foolhardiness, my own lack of nouse, my own inability to see the forest for the trees. I blamed everyone else, but for myself. I never took accountability, and it nearly killed me. But I have turned over a new leaf, this is not Edgar Allen Poe, this is a fairy tale with a bright future, thanks to these incredible fans. Yet Eddie Guerrero, for all the acknowledgement of guilty beat downs, what I saw out here was nothing but a sinister, and cowardly taking advantage of a bad situation. You were right, you are a great of this belt, and you are a legend in this industry who should have his rightful opportunity at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. In due course... ... In due course. You see, Eddie, I saved you not through pity, but because it was the right thing to do. And much like Disco Inferno, I do not offer what I am about to offer lightly, or for charity, or for pity, but because that belt in the center of the ring, is the belt of legends, its the belt of Champions, its the belt of heroes, and its the belt of the ability to battle adversity and stay on top. And there's no greater Champion of this belt in my eyes than yourself, Eddie. So what I am here to ask you is this. I too, want to be known as a great WCW Television Champion, and I will, by all manners of methods necessary hold onto this Championship until Starrcade, at which point Eddie, I want to be tested. I wanted to be put against the benchmark. I don't want to know whether I am as good as you or not, I want to prove myself against the benchmark that I am capable of being an even greater Champion than yourself. The question is whether you will accept, a Ravens Rules fight for your life at Starrcade, the grand-daddy of 'em all." Guerrero looks around, as strangely, the crowd starts chanting his name. Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! Eddie! Guerrero starts shaking his head, and looking bestranged by the whole situation. Finally, he looks down at the WCW Television Championship, and then back to Raven, before flicking an acknowledging nod of the head, and rolling out of the ring. "So it is written Eddie, so it shall come to pass. Quote the Raven, nevermore!"
Psicosis v Jushin 'Thunder' Lyger Don't you love the sound of metallic clunk as these cruiserweights suicide dive into the steel guardrails, risking all of mother and mercy to give a great show? I know I sure do, and that's why I particularly enjoy Psicosis matches. The risks he takes are awe inspiring, and a great way to get a show off the ground, as he literally flies like a wasp stinging his opponent with some of the most acrobatic work around. However, tonight again, he wrestled an absolute legend, and despite Psicosis giving him a fearful work out, Jushin Lyger managed to defeat many near falls and find a way to stay in the bout, and eventually he was able to roll through on a small package to counter Psisocis and bravely capture a win he probably didn't deserve. Result: Your winner, Jushin Lyger
After the break, a red and yellow graphic pops up and the announcers advise that on WCW Monday Nitro, Hulk Hogan will have a major announcement. The commentators were very limited in advising what sort of announcement this would be though.
WCW Television Championship Raven v 'Das Wunderkind' Alex Wright The commentators spoke about how Alex Wright over the last two or three weeks had gone back to Germany, in between limited calls to the US, to compete in an All Europe Wrestling Championship Tournament. The commentators hyped how Alex had managed to win the tournament final, over Doc Dean. Initially he was quite impressive with his springy style, including various drop kicks. But inevitably, the tireless Raven wore him down on the mat, with various hammer locks to try and stifle the quick work of Alex Wright, and brought him around easily for the Evenflow DDT for another impressive victory. After a few near misses with the Kenka Kick narrowly missing, Rick Steiner started to build momentum and seemed to be getting electric hot. He climbed the ropes, looking for the Bulldog, but Scott Steiner came across, and low blowed his own brother! He then stepped on the middle rope... FRANKENSTEINER on Rick Steiner! What the hell is this? Vincent threw Scott Steiner a black spray can, and he immediately sprayed the nWo on his brother's back, as Taz put his boot nonchalantly on the back of Rick Steiner for the pinfall. Result: Your winners, Masahiro Chono and Taz
"What is going on? Why has Scott Steiner done this to his own flesh and blood?" 'Iron' Mike Tenay asks. Scott Steiner then takes 'Dog Faced Gremlin' Rick Steiner, and puts the unconcious brother into the Steiner Recliner, wrenching his neck back. The crowd boo emphatically, as the cameras get up in Steiner's face. Vincent and Scott Steiner both shout out for the crowd to shut up, and eventually, Scott Steiner lets his brother go, but not before kicking him hard to the ribs. Vincent utters to the camera that this 'nWo style', back. This night is turning into a complete and utter disaster! The electric synthed simmering theme of Bret 'The Hitman' Hart hit, and the Hitman stepped forth through the curtain, seemingly without schedule given that he was in his social clothes, a Toronto Maple Leafs hockey jumper and black jeans. He asked one of the production crew for a microphone, and raised it instantly. "Cut the music, please, cut the music!" Finally the music died down. "What the hell was that, Scott Steiner? What the hell was that? That man is your brother. This is the sort of bull [beep] that I have been talking about since day one. This sort of.." Finally, Scott Steiner has had enough, and raises a microphone. "You shut the hell up! You shut your pie hole, Hart," Steiner says. "Did you not hear what Chris Jericho said on Nitro, pal? Tonight is the beginning of the resurgence of nWo style. Whether pieces of [BEEP] like you and Rick here get it, I really could care less. This is the rebirth of a new era, man. And it's time losers like you Bret Hart understood it." Hart responds, "You've got a lot of nerve, Scott. A lot of nerve. Why did you do it?" "A lot of nerve, Scott? Who the hell is Scott? You will call me now by the name, Big Poppa Pump," he says as he raises his right bicep and pumps it with a kiss. "I am the reflection of perfection, the genetic freak, the big bad booty daddy. Look at me, I am perfection. And that's what makes you envious. So you want to know what just went down, let me make it real simple. My friend here, Taz..." The crowd boo, as 'The Human Suplex Machine' Taz merely folds his arms... "There's an old saying in this business. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. And tonight, that's what I've done. And frankly Bret Hart, when my brother there wakes up, you can tell him that while the Steiner Brothers were renowned as a world class wrestling tag team, these rednecks haven't seen anything yet. Because this is a dawning of a new era, Taz and myself, the Human Suplex Machines. And what's more, you can tell your old lady that too. Because being the genetic freak, there are certain truths about my physique, certain legends. Tell your old lady that I am her hook up... Holla, if you hear me." Bret Hart goes to walk to the ring, but a number of WCW Road Agents and Security Workers crowd around Hart, and force him back, as we cut to a break.
'The Man of 1000 Holds' Dean Malenko v The Fallen Angel v 'The Innovator of Offence' Chris Kanyon Quite easily the best match on the card, despite Lyger and Psicosis earlier in the evening. This was perhaps one of the best matches in Thunder history. This kind of match should probably be reserved for Pay-Per-View, and these three men should probably be reserved for Championship opportunities. But in WCW, with such a cluttered roster, it's a tough world where each man fights to put on the fight of his life to get spotted, and to be given an opportunity. And that's exactly what this was about. Men defying submissions, beating impossible counts, countering moves like it was going out fashion, double teaming and being brutalised, and being thrown around inside and outside the ring like a rag doll. The Fallen Angel was particularly vibrant from the top rope, planting his superiors with many spiking moves from the top. His quickness around the ring, coupled with Malenko's ability to control tempo and momentum and build psychological story telling elements that keep the crowd on the edge of their seats, and Kanyon's all around ability to innovate and pull the spectacular out of nowhere kept this classic just that, an absolute Thunder classic. Malenko though appeared to have the match won when the Fallen Angel was out on the outside knocked down on the floor, courtesy of a DDT on the outside from Kanyon. Malenko took advantage of Kanyon re-entering and hit a snap suplex to the inside. He then hit a snap leg drop, and immediately found a way to hook over Kanyon. Kanyon screamed and hollered, as Malenko tightened the hold. Kanyon though somehow grabbed Malenko's right boot, and rolled him through, into an ankle lock! Right in the middle of the ring, Malenko tried to strain to the ropes, he tried to twist out of it, but Kanyon had such a good vertical base that he simply couldn't do it. The Fallen Angel got up, and quickly jumped on the apron, and hit a springboard elbow towards Kanyon, who quickly let go of Malenko, and grabbed Angel mid flight for a stunning DDT! Kanyon then picked up the Fallen Angel, and dropped him with a stomach breaker. Malenko somehow got on his feet and ran at Kanyon, tilter whirl back breaker from Kanyon, and again now into the Ankle Lock! Malenko tried, he tried, he tried to use his technical excellence to counter, but he could not... he tapped and Kanyon won a phenomenal match! Result: Your winner, Chris Kanyon
Backstage, Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner enters the nWo dressing room for the first time. There is a collective round of applause, and various nWo hand signs. The World Heavyweight Champion, 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho, and the Outsiders, along with 'Easy E' Eric Bischoff are the most pleased with this coup, and begin to embrace Steiner. "My God!" Eric Bischoff says, looking at the physique of Steiner. "Genetic freak indeed. Chris Jericho, I love this rebirth of the nWo style..." "Chico, welcome," Hall says, slicking back his hair and putting his tooth pick behind his ear. "I don't even need a survey chico, for this right here... this is TOOOOOO SWEEEEEEEEEEEET!" "It's sweet all the way up here," Nash says pointing high, "And all the way down here," pointing low. "Down where?" Hall asks. "You know where," Nash replies. Nash begins to leave, turning back and announcing "I'm going to go and Jackknife Perry Saturn to hell and back, watch my back..." Hall smiles, "That's why they call me the original bad guy," as he nods, as Nash heads to the ring and we head to a break.
'Big Sexy' Kevin Nash v Perry Saturn Perry Saturn started this match off fast and physical, trying to take Nash down with various drop toe holds and drop kicks. It was excellent work from Saturn. But Scott Hall ambled down to ringside, as Nash tried to find a way back in. It was even again, as Nash and Saturn tried to fist fight, and Saturn, realising the pointlessness of the exercise quickly reverted to hit and run tactics. Nash eventually raked the eyes of Saturn, as Scott Hall distracted the referee. Nash then hit his tilter whirl slam on Saturn, and tried to cover. He covered, but the referee was still arguing with Hall. After about seven seconds, Hall eventually left the apron, and the referee counted...1....2... NO! Kick out from Saturn, Nash went to argue with the referee, but as he did, Saturn inside cradled him...1....2...3! Result: Your winner, Perry Saturn
Scott Hall immediately proclaims his innocence to 'Big Sexy' Kevin Nash, who merely lays in the ring on his stomach, seething at Perry Saturn as he starts back tracking quickly up the ramp, and acknowledging the delirious crowd at this major upset here on Thursday Thunder. Nash has a look of anger on his face as he finally raises, and stands next to Hall. Kidman eventually got the pin on Finlay with the Shooting Star Press for an impressive title defence. Result: Your winners, and STILL WCW Tag Team Champions, Thrillapalooza
After the match, we cut to the back, where in the hallway of the arena, the former World Tag Team Champions, Rey Mysterio Jr and Chavo Guerrero Jr, are seen looking on at the match on a small monitor. Chavo turns to Rey and nods in acknowledgement of the work of Thrillapalooza, who are beginning to impress. But I can't do it here, Jim Neidhart actually.. shock horror, produced a fairly good match. He really hammed it up for the Giant, selling hard, and then coming back hard with the fans support for some tough elbows, and quick hit and run offence against the Giant. The Giant appeared to be getting frustrated as the Anvil found various ways to take down the Giant, showing the strength that Neidhart is acclaimed for. However, he tried the elbow off the ropes once too often, and ate a Chokeslam for afternoon delight, I mean afternoon tea. Result: Your winner, the Giant
Backstage, 'Mean' Gene Okerlund, thankfully back from the despicable attack from the Outsiders some two months ago, is flanked by two WCW Security Personnel as 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho, the WCW World Heavyweight Champion walks onto the Thunder Interview Center, clearly excited with the events of this evening. "Lionheart Chris Jericho, tonight has been..." "I know, great, just like myself," Jericho says as he looks skyward in a reverent look. "... A disgrace," Okerlund continues. "When a man does that sort of work on his own brother, it leaves a lot to be desired." Jericho looks shocked, and looks to muscle in on Okerlund, before Security step forward. "Not anymore!" Okerlund says. "This type of rubbish here in World Championship Wrestling has to stop.." "Says who, Junior?" Jericho says. "If a few announcers and a few other non entities like Rick Steiner have to be cast aside from the greater good of professional wrestling, so be it? Are you going to cast the innocent card? Play it more time, will you Sam, for old time's sakes? You have been in professional wrestling for twenty years, and where has tradition, honour and the like got anyone? The nWo explosion has created a new benchmark in professional wrestling, it has built a new plethora of fans, it has opened our eyes to the fact that professional wrestling has nothing to do with chivalry, it has to do with this," he says, pointing at his WCW World Heavyweight Championship. "That's the mark of respect, that's where the power lies. Frankly, Geno-Machino, if you, or any other old timer has a problem with what's about to happen... I won't even care for the blood that you think is soaking my hands. Because what it is being done in this nWo revolution Junior, is what is needed..." "Is that some kind of threat to the traditions of professional wrestling, of the code of honour held high in that dressing room?" "If that's the way you want to see it Geno-Machino, so be it. It's not of any concern to me." "You see Chris Jericho, this is why the entire World Championship Wrestling locker room is supporting Chris Benoit at Starrca.." "Just hold on for a second there, Junior. The whole WCW locker room? Well as we showed you earlier with Big Poppa Pump Scott Steiner, you might want to be careful who you choose to trust. Because as I have learned often the hard way, it's important in this business to keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. Who should you trust, Geno-Machino? Think very careful about who you trust, and who you endear your support to. I can't make my warning any more clearer.." "Again Jericho, Is that some kind of threat?" "You say tom-aaaa-tos, I say tom-aarrrt-o. As far as Chris Benoit goes, that bottom feeding trash bag is going to be shown for once and for all, in the epic show down of show downs at Starrcade who is the greatest wrestler to walk the face of this planet. You see, when I knock the rest of his three teeth out of his redneck mouth, and ram them down his throat, and proclaim the New World Order as the order of the day, it will be a great day for professional wrestling. The fact of the matter is this. I am YOUR ... WCW World Heavyweight Champion. I am the greatest sporting athlete on the face of the planet. I am your paragon of good virtue. And my millions, and millions of Jerichoholics around the world can unite as one, as I win the ultimate war to settle the score. Whose going to stop me? Eddie Guerrero? That guy was plucked like a pinyata earlier on. Whose next? Greenberg? That punk can't even earn a World Heavyweight Championship shot. Ric Flair? Pullleaaaase. Rick Steiner? You can consider him retired as far as I'm concerned. Junior, the world of wrestling is about to change. And there's nothing you, or Edward Scissor Teeth Benoit can do about it. Because after this match at Starrcade, you can start to acknowledge me as the messiah of professional wrestling. The showcase of sexiness. The... Greatest... Athlete... OF ALL TIME! You can say Geno-Machino that you're on the side of tradition. But frankly my dear Watson, what is more traditional than a great, legendary fighting athlete? What is more traditional than the victor of the greatest show down of technical wrestling skill of all time? Oh, you can mark that down, right here, right now, I will win at Starrcade. And just because the ring will change colours and become black, and just because chronies like yourself and Tony Skee-O-Varn-Ay may be out of a job, the revolution will bring honour to professional wrestling. Everyone else with a future... many of them will have a chance to sign over their contracts to the nWo Corporation. Those who don't, like you, will be flushed down the toilet in oblivion. The best thing about it all Geno, there's nothing... NOTHING... you or anyone else can do about it," he says elated. "Because I have everything... EVERYTHING... under control. The destiny of professional wrestling is all in my hands. Not yours... Not Flair's.. Not even Hogan's... And I will never... EEEEVVVERRR let that meddling Anderson or Flair cause us concern ever again. That's not a threat Geno, that's a guarantee. Signed sealed and delivered, at Starrcade... the WCW Death Warrant. YEAH BABY!" Jericho gives a condescending smile of arrogance, as Okerlund shakes his head in disdain.
'The British Bulldog' Davey Boy Smith v 'The Master of the Diamond Cutter' Diamond Dallas Page Davey Boy has underperformed in his WCW stint, there is no doubt. Perhaps its the years of abuse and injuries catching up with him, but you know what? Tonight he thought if Neidhart can do it, so can he. If ever there was a 'work the crowd' note thrown out, this was it, as Davey Boy bumped hard and tried to lift the crowd with various challenges and taunts, and they responded to the British charismatic. Page for his part, of course wrestled the heel role to perfection, hamming up the crowd and controlling large parts of the match through despicable means. Finally, Davey Boy got on a real roll, and the crowd, as hot as ever, really got in behind him. It really appeared we were going down memory lane with Davey Boy, of course he'll never be as vibrant as he was as a tag partner of the legendary Dynamite Kid, but he was throwing himself around the ring with an all too rarely seen vigour. And he seemed to be setting up for the Running Power Slam, and indicated as such to the crowd. However, as he did so, Kimberly Page, the formerly estranged and now reunited wife of Diamond Dallas Page, jumped on the apron and sprayed hair spray into Smith's eyes. Page slowly got his wits, and with Smith prone from not knowing where he was was extremely open for the Diamond Cutter. Davey Boy tried to guide himself around the top rope, pulling on it tersely to keep his balance and when he felt Page's presence held on tighter knowing the only way to be Diamond Cut was to be free of all available guides, including the top rope. But Page was too cunning, and moved outside to the apron and clotheslined Davey Boy. Smith fell into the middle of the ring, and Page sprung to the top rope and hit a springboard Diamond Cutter! That's it, goodnight nurse! Result: Your winner, Diamond Dallas Page
Post match, as Kimberly Page holds up the arm of her husband, 'The Master of the Diamond Cutter' Diamond Dallas Page, the former WCW Television Champion Disco Inferno races to ringside, and the Page's flee the ring. Inferno raises the microphone, "Meet me ..." he says, with his eyes gripping in extreme anger, and his voice deepening to a sharp seriousness, "At Starrcade. One on one. The ultimate grudge match. That is, if you've got a set that does NOT... belong to your wife..." DDP reacts badly, and jumps into the ring, and the two men go toe to toe, Page goes for a Diamond Cutter, but Disco slips out at the last second, and then goes for a Chartbuster, but Page held onto the top rope to prevent himself from being pulled down. Inferno smiles and dares Page to keep coming, as we fade to black...
Another fantastic show mate, but one bit stood out. The Goldberg - Arn Anderson segment. Brilliant stuff. Truly brilliant. I wish real wrestling companies would do more stuff like that. Rather than just have people in matches they need to build up their character. Having Goldberg talk in the way he did, with the stuff Arn said back, it makes Goldberg more of a character that fans can relate with and get behind, and it means that Benoit has the rub of ending the streak without Goldberg losing any heat. Brilliant stuff. Also really enjoyed the way you're handling Hogan after the "Reverse Fingerpoke of Doom", his explanation was great and you are using him perfectly, and the segment with Flair and Bischoff was fantastic, a really entertaining bit of writing. Also, really enjoyed the Chono thingy. I like this character you are giving him, his sadistic, vicious, hard hitting guy who just doesn't give a crap. Good stuff there. And finally, Bret's promo was great, and a great way to set up a Starrcade match with Sting. It really does look like being the biggest show of the year for you, and that says something. I particularly enjoyed the comments on Masahiro Chono. Truth be told, a lot of the time throughout putting this together, maybe moreso than the writing component which often came some time after it was booked, I'd find myself on youtube or dailymotion 'researching', and I got a whole new appreciation for some of these wrestlers. Chono is definitely one. I still don't think I've really given him or Muta enough light, which is sad, because I really do admire what they can bring to WCW. Moreso after Starrcade and into 1999 the booking transforms somewhat into a more complex myriad of depth into those types of characters, to try and roll out a more vibrant roster. I suppose, much like I said before, I really don't want to have anyone on my roster who you'd define as a jobber, or worse, non important. Maybe it's the business experience with strategic execution, but I try to put things together with the characters that... well, gives them a reason and a benefit to the company. So I'm really glad that's being picked up by the readers up and down the card. In some ways, its actually a tribute to you, as I refuse to believe that there's any better execution and manipulation of a roster than in FMTA, every time I go to tip I find it increasingly hard to narrow down my selections because frankly you build your roster so well that everyone has a chance, and to me is booking brilliance. In all seriousness...z, great work my friend. Hope you sweep award season like you deserve. YOUR THE KING OF THE WORLD!
Dude, did you accidentally take one of MY pills? :p Thanks again sister, nice to see you around. ------------- Alright, personal views on the show. Yep, its true, I haven't done away with everything that WCW did. Big Poppa Pump in wrestling annals will go down as a very, very controversial character, no doubt. I personally enjoyed the Steiner Brothers, but I always thought of Scott as the more ... capable riser so to speak. I suppose the difference is we wait till the end of 1998 to turn Scott, and there was a lot of subtle and not so subtle maneuvering to build the friction. Some things with the booking can appear super obvious, so while it appeared for a while again that the Steiners had found a happy median and that it was the Outsiders who were in severe trouble, its nice to be able to slightly dodge the route of 'apparentness' and go with something a little intriguing. I hope you all enjoyed the build to Raven-Guerrero, it's one of my more favoured personal promos with Raven. Whilst it doesn't really state much, and maybe doesn't change things the way a lot of other promos do, it perhaps gives a little credence to the performance through 1998 of Eddie Guerrero, and also just as much to the value of the Television Championship. I have deliberately tried to keep it relevant, I was dismayed with the whole 'throw it in the trash' thing, which I found disrespectful to the legends who have held this historic belt. For me, as a booker of this it is a great opportunity to join a growing legend if you are able to secure and hold this belt. Not just one diary reaching 1000 posts though eh, mate? Now that is an achievement to be very, very proud of and if anyone deserves it, it's you. Tonight's show is brought to you by some of my Kiwi memoires...
'Latino Heat' Eddie Guerrero v Curt Hennig Strangely for the start of play of late, we go straight to a match at the top of WCW Monday Nitro. And it's a very, very good match to start proceedings off. Curt Hennig in this match is like Barcelona's Xavi... controlling the tempo beautifully. It's quite clear he's leading in this match, with some well executed mat basics intertwined with some corner brutality. All in all, it's a good, well balanced match, when Guerrero starts to get any momentum basic holds like hammerlocks from Hennig are easily executed to take control of proceedings. It always seemed to keep Guerrero struggling to get maximum control, as he was always going in shoulder first to the mat. It was excellent technical wrestling from a guy who is revered to being one of the ultimate in ring perfectionists of his time. Even at this belated stage of his career he is very, very slick, as he was showing Guerrero. Not only was the tempo controlled nicely, but they really had a grip on the crowd, and despite it starting off slowly, and continuing to meander along, the frustration and despair built the crowd up to get in behind Eddie Guerrero. This seemed an odd reaction given some of his recent antics, but it appears these crowds are just beginning to gain more and more respect for Eddie in the ring, irrespective of some of his antics. Infact, in some recent conversations on various discussion boards it appears his controversial antics are more or less endearing him to fans even more so. Finally, after eight minutes, Hennig seemed to hook Guerrero in around the waist to go for the Hennig-Plex, but Guerrero dead weighted him by holding his feet, and instead, from the go-behind position re-gripped, lifted Hennig, dropping him face first with a tremendous counter move. Hennig got up, holding his head, and Guerrero was able to execute a bridging german suplex...1...2.. No. Guerrero then sent Hennig into the corner, and as Hennig moved as Guerrero charged, Guerrero stopped, and laughed, as he expected it, and quickly leapt to the top rope for a springboard bulldog. He arched his back from the agony of the match and slowly, but surely, climbed the ropes, looking for the Frog Splash. But Hennig raced ove rin desperation, and climbed the ropes also. The two men pounded each other with rights and lefts on the top rope, before finally Guerrero was able to elbow Hennig off. Hennig stayed on his feet, but Guerrero came down with a hurricanrana into a roll through pin cover...1...2....3! What a great match, one of the best openers in recent times on Nitro! Result: Your winner, Eddie Guerrero
"What a fantastic opening to WCW Monday Nitro," Tony Schiavone exclaims, as 'Latino Heat' Eddie Guerrero poses from the top turnbuckle for his fans. "Later on tonight, we will see two very tag team matches. Fans, first we will see 'Dog Faced Gremlin' Rick Steiner with a yet to be announced partner take on Masahiro Chono and Rick's deceitful brother, Scott Steiner. And in tonight's main event, Ric Flair and Chris Benoit of the Four Horsemen will take on the World Heavyweight Champion Chris Jericho and Diamond Dallas Page, and fans, this match will be a pivotal match in the ultimate match of the year to take place at Starrcade between Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship. What a great night that promises to be, but right now, here on Monday Nitro, wow what a start that was!" "These hameneggers don't know what hit them Schiavone, that was outstanding," Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan says. "Wait a minute! What the hell!" 'Living Legend' Larry Zbysko exclaims as Curt Hennig pulls 'Latino Heat' Eddie Guerrero off the top turnbuckle and starts pummeling him with hard right hands. Guerrero tries to fight back, and even gets an irish whip in on Hennig, and an athletic leapfrog, but before Hennig can come back, Guerrero is blasted in the back with a lead pipe by 'Big Poppa Pump' Scott Steiner! Debris begins to fill the ring ad nauseum, as Scott Steiner, with a white hair-style, and a white outfit puts the dangerous Steiner Recliner on Guerrrero. Hennig is on all fours in front of Guerrero mocking him. Yes! Yes! Here comes Raven! Raven races into the ring, and throws a hard right at Hennig, who drops to the mat and rolls out, and very quickly, Scott Steiner rolls to the mat. Raven goes to check on Guerrero who is gasping for air from the heinous attack from Steiner. -------------------------------- A graphic pops up that later tonight, Hulk Hogan will be here on Monday Nitro for a very special announcement. -------------------------------- After the break, backstage 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper, in his Scottish kilt and black leather jacket is seen entering the arena from a black limousine. In his right hand is a black suitcase, and he appears anxious to keep a firm grip of it. What is the meaning of all this?
'Dog Faced Gremlin' Rick Steiner and a Yet To Be Advised Partner v Masahiro Chono and 'Big Poppa Pump' Scott Steiner Rick Steiner seemed intent to try and fight off Chono, who was protecting Scott Steiner, on his own to get his hands on his brother and rip him limb for limb. But just as Chono softened up Rick Steiner enough for Scott to wish to come in, Rick Steiner's opponent revealed himself as being.... OH HO BOY! Business just picked up. The largest athlete in professional sports, the Giant is in the house! Chono and Scott Steiner looked extremely apprehensive, and waited in the corner. Rick Steiner tagged the Giant in, and the Giant straight away charged in, but Chono and Scott Steiner ran back, ducking a double clothesline, and turning around around to hit a double drop kick. But this had little impact on the Giant who simply shook his head, and then raised his fist in defiant anger and screamed loudly. This caused Chono and Big Poppa Pump to decide to leave the ring. When referee Charles Robinson asked what was going on, they complained that they did not intend to face this freak tonight as it was not part of the match contract. Charles Robinson then started counting, as Rick Steiner cursed and taunted his brother for being a gutless coward. It had no effect however, and as Scott Steiner and Chono went through the curtain, Rick Steiner ran after his brother as the referee finished his 10 count... but as Rick Steiner went through the corner... CRACK! It was a set up, steel chair from Taz! Result: Your winners, Rick Steiner and the Giant
As 'Big Poppa Pump' Scott Steiner, Masahiro Chono and 'The Human Suplex Machine' Taz kicked a mudhole on 'Dog Faced Gremlin' Rick Steiner, the big bad Giant came rumbling up the ramp. Through the curtain he went, and he sent Chono down with a crippling slap. Taz ducked one, and then Big Poppa Pump sprayed black spray paint into the eyes of the Giant, who fell to one knee. Blindly he kept trying to swat, like he was swatting flies, but realistically it was only the arrival of Doug Dillenger and The Fun Police that stopped any ensuing carnage. What a cowardly set up! From about five feet back, the WCW World Heavyweight Champion 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho was seen. He was laughing, and admiring the handy work on his nWo colleagues. But as the cowardly Big Poppa Pump, Taz and Masahiro Chono walked away, the 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair stood to the side of Jericho. Jericho's look of good humour talked to one of repugnance. "What the hell do you want, Junior, on MY show... Monday Night JERICHO!" Flair's ageing face creased with a smile, before he let out his beloved... WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! "Tonight pal, we go to school. For tonight, you're going to find out why diamonds are forever... and so is Ric Flair, and you'll find out why... I'm the dirtiest player in the game..." He pats Jericho on the shoulder condescendingly as he says cynically, "Champ!" Jericho looks frustrated at the lack of respect as Flair walks off, strutting his way off the scene. For this was the same kind of match that these two teams have intermittently had with each other over the past three or four months. Harlem Heat controlled the match with their extra power, and special mention also to Booker T who looked in incredulous form it must be said. And then, watch a hot tag, a sense of face desperation amongst the crowd, but for extra sizzle and shizzle add an extra suicide dive to the outside from Rey Mysterio Jr, and a slightly prolonged comeback stanza from Rey and Chavo to highlight their high flying and their relevance in the tag division. Harlem Heat also made a defiant stand at the end, but with a very quick set of chain spots between Rey and Booker, Rey was able to get the pinfall following a tilterwhirl into a stunning DDT. Top move. Good match, goodnight. Result: Your winners, Rey Mysterio Jr and Chavo Guerrero Jr
Backstage, in the New World Order dressing room, 'Big Poppa Pump' Scott Steiner is far from happy. "What the hell was that, huh?" He says as he pokes Curt Hennig in the chest. "You're the experienced man here, right now, I want answers! How the hell did the Giant get into that match? I thought you'd take care of things." "Whoa whoa, calm down man," Hennig says, clutching an ice bag to his head. "Incase you didn't notice, I was out there getting my [BEEP] handed to me too." "I came to the nWo bro to roll with the bling, not nearly get my head taken off by the Giant. I came here to... say, what the hell is that?" He says as he sees Kimberly Page bending over in a black, tight hugging shiny dress to apply make up to her toes. "Hey you, hoochie," he says. "Incase you haven't heard, I'm the Genetic Freak. And I'm your hook up. Holla, if you hear me!" 'The Master of the Diamond Cutter' Diamond Dallas Page hears this and gets in the face of Big Poppa Pump, but then begins to smile. "One day bro, when you're as successful as me, you can have a beautiful wife like that too. Oh yeah! Bada-bing.. BOOM-BANG!" He says as he thrusts his pelvis. "One day? To hell with that, I'm going to show my freaks why I am the Genetic Freak...!" Page looks on in shock, and scratches his head as Big Poppa Pump walks out. "You know, as I stand here in Phoenix, Arizona," he says, allowing a cheap pop, " I can tell you that there is not one fan in this crowd who should have to pay and then stand for that [BEEP]. The fact is, the man you were facing Konnan is a fantastic wrestler who deserves far better than that. I must say, for the first two or three minutes of that match, he was all over you, and frankly, I was impressed. Till you pulled that cheap [beep]. So here's what I'm proposing we do, lets have ourselves a little tag match. You, Konnan and Bagwell, against Steven Regal and a partner of his choice... Oh, wait a second, I'm out here in my ring attire, so... I guess you're going to find out why I'm the Excellence of Execution, the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be!" Hart drops the microphone and storms his way to the ring, much to the joy of the crowd. Konnan and Bagwell were very quickly overpowered by Hart, who then tagged in the menacing Regal to get revenge. And did he what. He went to town on Bagwell, who ended up trying to please for respite. But to no avail, for this fiery Brit, was on a roll. After Konnan tried to make a save on a pinfall, Hart clotheslined him out, and Regal, fittingly, ended the match using a variation of Hart's own Sharpshooter, which Bagwell tapped eagerly too. Result: Your winners, Bret Hart and Steven Regal
Backstage, we can see Hulk Hogan leaving his dressing room in his red and yellow, complete with red and yellow boa feather lancing over his neck and shoulders and flowing over to his chest, as the crowd pop enormously for this fabled legend, noticing he is on his way to the ring, after the break. ---------------------------------- As we return to WCW Monday Nitro, we pan around the corner which seemingly instantaneously pop to their feet as American Made bursts out loudly through this packed Arizonian crowd. Kids are lifted up onto their fathers shoulders in yellow and red attire, as the original legend himself, the Icon, Hulk Hogan comes through the curtain, and he goes to either side of the stage twice, waving his hand to his ear to gauge the enormous reaction from this pro-Hogan crowd. The transformation in crowd reaction to him is nothing short of miraculous, it almost seems all sins are forgiven. Red and gold pyros burst behind Hogan as he continues to walk purposefully to the ring, tapping various fans hands in the entrance way and around ringside, before climbing up the steps, and into the ring. Once in the ring he has approximately 47,485 waves of his hand to his ear, before giving us the Apollo Stretch, and finally, the beloved ripping off of the shirt. Almost forgotten, standing in the middle of the ring is veteran interviewer, 'Mean' Gene Okerlund, and Hogan moves over to Okerlund, and continues to nod for his fans, as Okerlund begins the interview. "Hulk Hogan, it sure is good to have you back in WCW!" Okerlund exclaims. "Well you know something Mean Gene! They said that Hulk Hogan was dead but we're not even down and out brother. Hulk Hogan has not missed one second of Monday Nitro brother, waiting, waiting, waiting for a moment like this right here with all my little Hulkamaniacs right here in Phoenix, Arizona, brother!" The fans, of course, with the Arizona comment plugged in also, absolutely go nuts. "These fans certainly agree Hulk, ... well, welcome back," Okerlund says. "You and I have a lot of history together Hulk, and I know you have a very special announcement here tonight on WCW Monday Nitro." "Well you know with so much momentum flowing to the WCW Mean Gene, on December 27 brother make sure the tanks are topped off, make sure the Harley's got the wheel to the ground brother, because when we get done with all the dirty work brother, I'm going to make sure we're headed in the direction brother, the right direction towards what all these Hulkamaniacs deserve, man." "Speaking of that Hulk, there's been much speculation that tonight, you are going to resolve some issues heading forward here in your time with WCW. You said there were two things to fix, one of which you took care of at World War III by saving the career of 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan - would you care to tell us what number two is?" Asking a man what a number two is, is probably one of those occasions when the saying 'nothing ventured nothing gained' is really not applicable. Anyhow... "Brother, that night in our nations capital, as I looked up at the lights and I saw the embers burn out of my heart and the heart of all the little Hulkamaniacs when I pondered the most difficult decision of my entire life, brother, was the most painful night of my career. I had told each and everyone of these Hulkamaniacs to take my vitamins and say my prayers brother, but when push came to the shove, instead of mounting that Harley one more time and taking the challenge to the heart, I cowardly bowed down and took the sword on the shoulder from the New World Order corporation, dude. You were there Mean Gene brother, that night in 1996 when brother Hulkamania died. But I made a vow that night in my dressing room, as I listened to the chorus of boos I realised that sooner or later, in my heart of hearts brother, that the landslide would bring me down, dude. And it did. It did that night in our nations capital." "You're referring to Slamboree..." "You're dead right Mean Gene brother, so what I want to do, right here, right now in Phoenix Arizona is get Bill Goldberg..." GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG! "That's right my Hulkamaniacs, I want Bill Goldberg brother to walk down the aisle, face to face, and face up to the challenge." Crush 'Em hits, as the frenzied fans take up the challenge once more... GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG! GOLDBERG! This guys popularity is unrivalled here in WCW. After what seems an eternity, Bill Goldberg makes his way through the curtain, and to the bottom of the ramp, where he is consumed by the blazing pyros. In a haze of steam they burst into oblivion, and with smoke pouring out of his nose, he pumps his left and right arms and continues to storm his way to the ring, as this capacity crowd is energised to the extreme. Once in the ring, Goldberg pulls on the top rope, checking his flex and strength, before spitting on the mat, and turning to face Hulk Hogan. Hogan looks to the left, Goldberg to the right, and then back to each other, and then Hogan looks to the right, Goldberg to the left. Hogan has a bristling look on his face, as Goldberg stands stoic, as Okerlund lifts the microphone. "Well you know something Bill Goldberg brother," Hogan continues, "That night in Washington DC at the Slamboree Pay-Per-View, my life hit the cross roads. As I walked through the valley of the shadow of doubt, I take a look at my life and realised brother..." He says before pausing, and looking to the crowd once more, who begin to chant for Hulk, before Hogan continues. "That I was nothing but a coward, brother. I realised that Hollywood was dead. I realised that I had allowed Hollywood to consume me, and to take away the very best of me. And brother, as I left that ring, I realised that I wanted to ensure that I was remembered as something more. Brother, I have wrestled in Tinsel Town, I have wrestled in Japan, I have wrestled up there in New York brother, and I have sold out arenas the world wide. But brother, I have never, ever been a coward enough that I had to do what I did that night, brother. So tonight brother, I want to do two things. The first thing is to apologise to all my Hulkamaniacs and to you.. Bill Goldberg. Brother, there is no doubt whatsoever that you are the future. There is no doubt in my mind that when I look into your eyes, I see a young Hulk Hogan. Brother, I see a face that is going to transform this industry once more, like Hulkamania did. When I hear this capacity crowd right here in Phoenix, Arizona..." Of course, another cheap pop. Niiiiceeee. "I realise brother that the Goldberg phenomenon is something special. And brother, there may be no stopping it. But you know something brother, apologies are all well and good but as I stepped foot on my Harley last night to go for one last ride across the desert, and I looked down at the chain dangling and reflecting in the golden sunshine of the winter night, I realised brother that it came down to actions. Because Bill Goldberg, that's why these fans love you, man. It's all about what you do, brother, it's all about your accomplishments..." Hogan puts out his right hand, and Goldberg shakes it. "But you know something brother, for all your achievements, there's still one thing you're yet to do, brother. And that's put 70,000 [beep]s on seats, for what I'm about to offer you brother is the ultimate icon versus icon match in the history of professional wrestling, man. You see, right now, the power of professional wrestling still lies here," he says pointing at the palm of his hand, "sooner or later, that's going to change brother. And what I got to know Bill Goldberg is if that time is now, or whether Hulkamania still is wild today as it has been for all those years, brother. So what I'm going to ask you, Bill Goldberg, the greatest professional wrestling of the early part of the 21st century no doubt man, is whether you are the greatest icon living today, right here, right now. Are you the greatest icon of the end of the 20th century too, dude. Bill Goldberg! Brother! Will you face me, one on one... at Starrcade?!" Goldberg looks to the crowd who are chanting for him once more, and then very quickly turns back to Hogan... "Hulk Hogan! It would be a pleasure. So I've just got one thing to say to you.... ..." Hogan looks concerned, as the stand off continues, before Goldberg returns to the microphone. "Hulk Hogan! YOU'RE NEXT!" The crowd goes wild realising they have just basically seen the inking of the proverbial agreement for Hulk Hogan-Bill Goldberg, the grudge rematch of the year, which will go down at Starrcade! After Goldberg leaves the ring, Hogan continues to play the 'ear' card to the crowd, and apollo flexing for them also, as we fade to a break. Psicosis ran to it, and used it as a springboard for an immense hurricanrana on Kanyon. Dragon took it and then swung it at the head of Kanyon, causing referee Nick Patrick to call for the bell. However, after Kanyon recovered, Kanyon and Saturn asked for the match to be restarted, as a table and ladders match, with the winner being the team that put another through a table. Nick Patrick shrugged his shoulders, but restarted the bout. This was a bad mistake on the part of Psicosis and Ultimo Dragon, because this all of a sudden became the Extreme Innovators domain. With a lot more liberty in the match, coupled with their reckless wills to innovate, this became a spot fest with high impact. There was numerous near misses as table after table was broken, either as a weapon or as a near miss. After nine minutes of air sucking adrenalin, Saturn dove off the top rope with a splash on Ultimo Dragon through the table, for the win! This was a classic match. Malenko brought it and then some, and so many times it appeared he was in a position to put on the Texas Cloverleaf, but the resilience of Raven shone through time and time again. Finally, Raven was able to stabilise his legs from the brutality of the submission holds being applied by Malenko, and from this wide vertical base was able to hit some more impact type moves. He then hit a very original move by his standards, coming off the top steel cable with a moonsault like spin into a leg drop across the neck of Malenko. This was the sort of desperation Raven had to use to try and conquer the Horsemen. Finally after a spot where Malenko missed a neckbreaker, but took Raven down with an arm drag takedown, followed by another, and then went for a bridging German Suplex only for Raven to instead grab onto Malenko's head, and hit an instinctive jaw breaker, with Malenko stumbling around Raven somehow was able to hit the Evenflow DDT for a miraculous win. Result: Your winner, and STILL WCW Television Champion, Raven
After a quick recap of the match, we hear the Scottish bag-pipes, which can only mean one thing, the arrival of 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper! Piper walks through the curtain, and surveys the scene with a t-pot pose a bright smile. After some pyros burst out at the bottom of the ramp, he marches slowly to the ring, looking intent, and holding onto the briefcase like he's protecting Fort Knox. Once in the ring, he takes the microphone from David Penzer. "Eric Bischoff! As you well know, the more you think you have the answers pal, I change the questions. You see, over the last couple of months I haven't been on TV too much. And I guess you're all wondering what I've been doing." Piper looks down at his briefcase and smiles. "Well well well! I have no idea what this is..." suddenly, its like a light goes on in his head. "Wait a second! It's what I've been up to. You think I've been hibernating Bischoff, guess what pal, I've been back on the horse man, I've been lassoing you in from a distance. You see, I got to thinking, what is the thing that would hurt Eric Bischoff the most. And it became very easy to figure out. Which I guess is why they call you Easy E, huh? You see, I got to realise, that you like to control things. I ... I... no... Should I? Ok, I will. I think it's a compensation effect, Bischoff, because I bet you when you're at home with your old lady its not you who wears the pants in the house! Yeah, that's right pal, I hear you're a bit frisky like that. Sonny Onoo and Bobby Walker told me so. So I got to work out how I could... ha! Destroy you. I got to realise it, why? Because I'm so quick man, I'm so quick that I could spit into a wind, duck and let it hit the old lady behind you. I'm so quick that I can turn the light out and be in bed asleep before you even knew it. Bischoff, I'm quite sure you're quick too, from what your old lady says, but I'm quick in a different sense..." Suddenly, he opens up the briefcase and pulls out a document. "You see this here, Eric Bischoff? This right here is a contract. And it's the official contract for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at Starrcade. Now, there's a few things you already know. First, Chris Jericho will defend his World Heavyweight Championship... should he make it that far... at Starrcade against Chris Benoit. Secondly... we know that the match will decide the fate of the New World Order and the Four Horsemen. You see, if Benoit loses, the Four Horsemen are history and vice versa with Jericho. But here's a couple of extra curve balls. These past two months I've been working as a consultant to the WCW Executive Committee, yeah..! That's right, yet another group who has your [beep]s in a purse! And ... after some advice from... well, a certain good looking devil you know as... Yours Truly, we decided on two extra points. Firstly, if there is any interference, it will be an AUTOMATIC disqualification, and the Championship WILL change hands. And for the offending wrestler, why, it's a lovely trip to the unemployment line. YAY! But wait! There's more! Ring now, for a free set of steak knives and... Drum roll please.... Dazzaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz The match, will be an ... ULTIMATE IRON MAN MATCH! So let me explain that one to you Bisch, your man Jericho, will go one on one with the best conditioned athlete in WCW, in a match that lasts 60 minutes, with the most falls or submissions deciding who gets the gold." Piper starts laughing and jumping up and down beside himself. "Oh, I knew this would be good! I love it I love it I love it! Why, hic hic, that's great Roddy. Yes, I know, thank you Roddy. Save your adulation Roddy, it's all in a days work. Guess what Bischoff? Ha! The second you thought you knew the answers...ha! I changed the question!" Piper holds the briefcase in the air, before dropping the microphone to the mat as we faded to a break. Built around a lot of stop holds such as sleepers etc, particularly when Page and Flair were involved. Flair and Page are the masters of building psychology even off just raw basics, and the crowd were getting behind some of the most basic ring work known to man. The true success of the match though was the four minutes that Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho got in the middle of the match on even ground. There were two previous stints where Benoit was bashed down, and defiantly held his own but no more, but this four minutes was special. It featured some quick athletic chain wrestling followed by counters upon counters upon counters. This was some of the finest technical wrestling possible to see in 1998. You could sense the frustration on each other's faces, and the immense respect and acknowledgement of their respect opponents prowess was obvious. Frustrating, but obvious. The ending came with Flair and Jericho in the ring. Flair went for his fabled low blow, but Jericho caught his hand, and put him into a hammerlock, and then into an atomic drop. Flair turned around, and Jericho raked his eyes, rendering Flair a useless mule. Benoit came in, but the referee held him back as Page came in for a Diamond Cutter on Flair. Benoit though pushed past the referee, and the two men, Jericho and Benoit had a fury of punches in the middle of the ring, tense, tiring, sapping action, before referee Charles Robinson forced Benoit finally from the ring. With Flair struggling, Jericho went for the cover...1...2.....thr... NO! Flair got his shoulder up. Page ran in again, but this time, Benoit came charging in also, and threw Page to the outside. Benoit went to the top steel cable, and hitting a diving swan dive into the chest of Page, forcing the two men into the steel barricades. This time, Jericho went for the low blow, and a schoolboy roll up with his feet on the ropes...1...2...3! The dirtiest player in the game cannot believe it! Mate I was trying to predict for Nitro but my internet connection kept going down and I couldn't. This is what I wanted to say about the Thunder show- 'Great show. The way you have brought the nWo's importance back around is fantastic booking, I really love it. Scot Steiner's turn was great as well, thought it worked excellently. Plus, the slow build for the Outsiders split is owrking and you've handled Disco incredibly well. On any other week, the Raven & Eddy segment would be the best thing of the show. The way you have made the TV Title seem so important is absolutely fantastic booking, I'm really, genuinely impressed. Brilliant, brilliant, brillaint stuff. It's a great promo from Raven and I just love the whole thing. However, that show BELONGED to Jericho. He has always had the potential to run a show on his own, as he has proved in the WWE for the last couple of years, but thta promo before the main event was flat out genius. I absolutely adored it. It was incredible, and one of the best promos I've ever seen on here by anyone.' Then you followed that up with Nitro! Steiner is looking really good out of this turn, but again, two things stood out from Nitro. One was the match stipulations for Benoit vs. Jericho. Loving it. An Iron Man will be great and with the chance to get rid of the nWo once and for all is brilliant. That show, however, was about the return of Hogan. I loved that whole segment. It felt really authentic, like i was watching it live. Hogan came out of it really well and it gave Goldberg a good rub. Loved it. WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Ultimo Dragon (c) v Lenny Lane You can't have a division with guys like Rey, Chavo, Lyger & Psicosis tearing the house down with Lenny Lane the champion The Outsiders v The Extreme Innovators (Perry Saturn and 'The Innovator of Offence' Chris Kanyon) The Innovators are on a roll and the Outsiders can't get along 'Your Olympic Hero' Kurt Angle* v 'Lord' Steven Regal I liked Bret helping Regal out. That is one jacked card, my friend. Jacked, jacked, jacked.

I'm surprised the Jericho segment you refer to came across so strongly, I remember typing it up and thinking... this just doesn't quite grab me the way the other promos do, and so, I kind of deleted what I had and started again on the premise that if Chris Jericho is the World Heavyweight Champion, and he is the defender of the nWo, then he really needs to go more to a more pugnacious threatening heel, and I wanted to remind people what types of thugs the nWo really are. Yep - Starrcade is looking nice, in my eyes. Currently we have confirmed Jericho/Benoit, Hogan/Goldberg, Flair/Bischoff, Disco Inferno/DDP, Raven/Eddie Guerrero, Hart/Sting. In a nutshell I've always been booking towards this moment, perhaps in the middle of the year this story looked befuddled and ordinary but the intention was to make Starrcade very, very special, as I believe Starrcade should always be made to look. I think the end-card will have something for everyone :p
WCW Cruiserweight Championship: Ultimo Dragon (c) v Lenny Lane The Outsiders v The Extreme Innovators (Perry Saturn and 'The Innovator of Offence' Chris Kanyon) 'Your Olympic Hero' Kurt Angle* v 'Lord' Steven Regal 'Big Poppa Pump' Scott Steiner v Wrath WCW Television Championship: Raven (c) v 'Cutback' Lash Le Roux 'Macho Man' Randy Savage v Sting 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair v WCW United States Champion 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit All I can say is.... Photobucket
Hey bud, heh, all to be revealed on Flair/Benoit at the top of the show. One very quick note on Lenny Lane, his performances in the TEW scope of things are very encouraging for what has essentially been a comic cannon fodder wrestler. He's got that "looks set to rise up the card" value on him currently too. I'm kind of glad he does, because I was disappointed when Standards & Practices disposed of Lenny and Lodi, in real life, they were doing a very good job in the tag division but it lasted but such a short time.

First of all, Ultimate Iron Man!!!??? I seriously cannot wait to read that. I think I might have to start from the end and work my way down the card its going to be that good. I don't think I could wait til the end. Hogan/Goldberg just adds even more star power to the card which was brilliant anyway and I loved the segment. I enjoyed the opening match. Bet that got the crowd pumped for the show. Great work with Piper aswell mate. Tonight's show proudly brought to you by.... Long live the funky backing music After blue and white lightning like pyros explode with a chorus of Thunder like sounds into the atmosphere of this arena here in Mobile, Alabama, and we pan around a highly excited crowd, we hear the click of hooves, and the familiar Four Horsemen theme. As we look up at the ramp, we can see 'The Enforcer' Arn Anderson, Bill Goldberg, 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair, 'The Man of 1000 Holds' Dean Malenko and 'The Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit, the reigning WCW United States Champion who in a couple of short weeks gets the shot of a life time at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship at the Georgia Dome at Starrcade against 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho. The Horsemen roll down the ramp, dressed in smart, luxurious almost dress attire, which is to be expected of the Four Horsemen as no one else can roll like a Horsemen can, the lifestyle and prestige of the unit is something to behold, and they all know it. Forget the New World Order, no one rolls like a Horsemen, and frankly nothing beats the eliteness of the group, nothing beats the history. The Four Horsemen are a wrestling legacy. Above the ring is a steel cage, which hangs perilously above, suspended to torture 'Macho Man' Randy Savage and Sting within it's confines later tonight. Once in the ring, the four active wrestlers gladly hold up their four fingers for the crowd, while 'The Enforcer' Arn Anderson waits for the theme music to die down before raising his microphone. "You know it's real clear to me, as I stand here in Mobile, Alabama," he begins, awaiting for the reactive cheap pop, "As I criss cross this country with my friends and esteemed colleagues the Four Horsemen that the people of this country have taken the Four Horsemen in their hearts! And as I look around, minding the fact that I don't really want to be the one to blow my own horn, but I can't help but wonder if the assembly of people behind me is probably the greatest assortment of professional wrestlers ever gathered under one alligned banner. So Mobile, Alabama, I just want to tell you that it sure does feel special being here live on Thursday Thunder, because I can tell you just over a year ago, Ric and I, we never thought this would happen again. Speaking of Ric Flair, come on down baby!" Flair struts forth and... WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! And don't the crowd love that? "Arn BY GOD The Enforcer Anderson! Is it true that the Four Horsemen are here tonight to party in Mobile, Alabamaaaaaaa? WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Is it also true, that at WCW Starrcade, at the Georgia Dome, on the red hills of Georgia, that the dream of all dreams brother, the dream of all dreams will come true when we lay rest to the nWo? Could it be also true Arn Anderson, that at Starrcade I get a chance to destroy Eric Bischoff, the lowest coward on the face of this planet bar none... BAR NONE! Is it true? You're damn right it is. You see, at the very first Starrcade event, they said it was a Flair for the Gold. But brother, I've walked the aisle many times in my career, and I've faced the biggest and the baddest brothers from Andre the Giant, to Wahoo McDaniel, till the silky skills of Ricky The Dragon Steamboat to Sting himself! Bur brother, I've never ever experienced the fear of trepidation that's going to quiver through the mind of Chris Jericho! Because pal, this man to my right, the Rabid Wolverine, is without a doubt the finest wrestler I have seen as I live and breathe today! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! Bar none... BAR NONE! And as I ..." Just then, the familiar music of the corrupt leader of the New World Order himself, 'Easy E' Eric Bischoff hits, and the corporate mouth piece walks forth in a black leather jacket, blowing cynical kisses to the crowd. With an arrogant smile, the ultra heel continues to the ring. He stands in front of 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair with a condescending smile on his face, as he puts his right hand out to shake Ric Flair's hand. Of course, the Nature Boy has no ambition to do so, so Eric looks at his hand, and thrusts it forward again. "Come on Ric! Let's bury the hatchet! Come on, what do you say?" Flair turns around, and then turns back to Bischoff and spits in his face. Bischoff stands there, with his hand still out, slowly watching the spit dribble down his cheek. Finally, he washes it off, and then moves forward and slaps the Nature Boy to his face! Before Flair can retaliate, Bischoff quickly raises the microphone again... "I wouldn't do that if I was you!" He says. "Why? What are you going to do? Fire me? I'm already fired. Go on, fire me! I'M ALREADY FIRED! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" "So you keep telling us, Ric, but if I'm not mistaken, you are standing in my ring, and I could well have you arrested. You see Ric, I'm not licensed by the Alabama State Wrestling and Boxing Commission to partake in any... any... ANNNNY professional wrestling action, so if you hit me pal, it'll be akin to common assault. So really Ric, what are you going to do? Again pal, I'm one step ahead of you." "You're a low life son of a [BEEP], Bischoff!" Bischoff feigns disinterest by yawning, and then rolling his eyes in the back of his head. "You're like a broken record, pal. Get with the times, Ric," he says as his smile widens. "You see, I too was a great Four Horsemen fan. Yeah, that's right, I was a Four Horsemen fan..." HORSEMEN! HORSEMEN! HORSEMEN! HORSEMEN! HORSEMEN! "That's right, a GREAT Four Horsemen fan! But that was 1988, and this is now, Ric, ten years on, and it's time for a change of scenery. And what you've failed to realise is this. The New World Order is the greatest opportunity for this promotion to become the elite sporting event across the globe. You mightn't like our corporate approach, and our corporate philosophy, and you may not like that we have to do certain things to ensure top dollar returns for our shareholders... including your pal Ted himself, but I have neither the time, nor the energy to stand out here and listen to you hypocritically talk anymore, pal. You see, Ric, you escaped one ... out ... at World War III," he says as he begins to clap his hands cynically. He continues to clap, as Flair gets further and further incensed. "It was great. Why, suffering succatash, you double crossed me. It was the double crosses of all double crosses, Ric. It beat what that financially crippled fool from up in Connecticut did in Montreal even. I'll give you that. It was something special I gotta admit. But you know something Ric, you say you're the dirtiest player in the game. Is that right?" "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! You're damn right it is, pal." "That's nice, it really is," he says as his face turns serious. "But Ric, do I look like I'm playing to you? You see, Ric, as your Four Horsemen stand here in the middle of this ring, and you try and selfishly take all the glory from the boys in the back, who... while they don't know it yet, have the ability to be led to the riches like pigs to the trough after Starrcade when Chris Jericho ends Chris Benoit in the Ultimate Iron-Man Match, I look at things very differently. I look at bottom lines... I look at ratings... I look at selling merchandise... I look at share performance. Things you don't like to talk about at your parties, but secretly deep down you crave for me being the man behind the desk driving the New World Order to accomplish all the corporate goals that our conglomerate requires of us. You talk of morals, you talk of ethics, I talk of success, Ric. And that's the difference between you and me in 1998, I am successful, yet you still come out here 10 years past when the four fingers meant anything." The crowd boo in unison, by God to these people, the Four Horsemen is a legend, an enduring legend of hope, of honesty, of success in itself. "But you see Ric, I'm not out here to badger you. I'm not out here to kiss your [BEEP]. Frankly, I leave that sort of chaos to the guys up North. Oh, by the way, Hi Vince... incase anyone here is still wondering, Kane beats Billy Gunn tonight, and Mabel.. Mabel, is that his name? You know, the whale. Anyway, that dude beats the Godfather. Riveting. Truly. And of course, our recent jobber Jeff Jarrett beats Ahmed Johnson by DQ. Now we all know the results, let's do something... interesting here on Thunder. You see Ric," Bischoff says as he pulls something out of his coat pocket, "I come armed too. It seems a lot of friendly folk have been having a laugh on old Bisch lately on contracts and terms of agreements and this and that, well, Ric... This here, this is a copy of a contract made by the WCW Executive Committee earlier tonight. You see, I too have stroke. Anyhow, this agreement... is for tonight. And .... God, I love this job, do you Ric.. do you love the fact I love this job so much? Oh, I think you will, I think you'll enjoy this as much as I do. You see Ric, would you like a shot at becoming the Seventeen time World Heavyweight Champion? Well... consider it done, pal. Because tonight, you will face Chris Benoit, for a shot at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. That's right, Chris, you'll have to go through your mentor to take up your shot, ..." Bischoff smiles and waves, as he goes to leave the ring, but he stops on the apron, away from harm and raises the microphone once more, "If either of you two throw the towel, or are assumed to be giving less than 100%... Well then, Ric you don't get your shot at me, and Benoit, you can go wrestle the whale Mabel for all I care, because you will be... FIRED!" Bischoff smiles, as his theme hits, and he begins walking up the ramp, much to the frustration of the Four Horsemen. ----------------------------------- After the break, 'The Master of the Diamond Cutter' Diamond Dallas Page stands by in the New World Order dressing room with 'Big Poppa Pump' Scott Steiner and 'The Human Suplex Machine' Taz. "Yo, Genetic Freak," Page says, calling Big Poppa Pump over. "I've got a little something on my mind," Page says. Big Poppa Pump gulps as Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan on commentary reminds the fans of how Big Poppa Pump looked his wife up and down like she was a piece of strudel. "Taz... If you would..." The menacing power house from Brooklyn walks over, folded arms, standing next to Page. "Taz, I want you to take care of something..." "Hey! Hey!" Big Poppa Pump retorts. "You know I didn't mean anything by that.. incident. Besides, I'm the genetic freak, I've got my peaks to satisfy all my freaks. Holla if you hear me." "What?" Page asks, looking quizzically. "Wha.. Seriously, what? Look, nevermind. Taz, I want to appoint you as the bodyguard to Poppa Pump here, you see Poppa, when you joined the nWo it came with some... flak. Some unfriendly fire, and bro, if anyone crosses you, what's going to happen, Taz?" Taz brings in a deep breath through his nose before deeply saying, "I'll choke them the [BEEP] out." Page smiles, as Big Poppa Pump looks on extremely interested in that finally, instead of being slapped around by Taz, he's there to protect him. But Ultimo Dragon always seems to have that troubling Dragon Sleeper in his kit bag, and once he gets in a go behind position, it's nearly always goodnight Annie, and that's basically what happened here. Despite some courageous and swift chain wrestling from Lenny, who rose in the estimatino of many fans tonight, he was basically another walking victim. Result: Your winner, and STILL WCW Cruiserweight Champion, Ultimo Dragon
Backstage, as the Four Horsemen disperse into their dressing room, the WCW United States Champion 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit walked over to 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair. Benoit put out his right hand, and shook the hand of Flair. "Tonight, Ric, tonight we will get to see an epic match," Benoit proclaimed. "The fans around the world, watching, as two great Horsemen ride Thunder off into the sunset. Because what this is all abouuuuttt is respect, honour, prestige. The best of the best..." "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! You're damn right Chris, the best of the best. But pal, if you expect me to back down in the slightest..." Flair says as he grips tighter and his eyes widen and his teeth grit, "Well, you'll find why Diamonds are Forever, and so is Ric Flair!" "I wouldn't have it any other way," Benoit says, continuing to lock in the handshake, and staring at Flair as we fade away before they start making out. Of course, they didn't, but you know those love-all scenes where two grown men stare at each other indecently for a long period of time... 'sif you'd look into another man's eyes for minutes at a time. ---------------------------- Meanwhile, Bill Goldberg, who is lagging behind and still signing an autograph for a child notices Hulk Hogan turning the corner of the hallway, doing the same thing. Goldberg finishes the autograph, and hands it to the kid before calling you. "Hulkster!" Goldberg says with his deep rasty voice. "Well you know Bill Goldberg," Hogan says. "Can you hear that?" The crowd are booming in the background. "Fifteen thousand people, all on the edge of their seats brother," Hogan says. "And as I rode down the Highway on my Harley, from the snow of the north brother to the sun of the south dude, I got a vision man. I got a vision of fifteen thousand people here tonight, cheering and chanting for you, brother. And it's exactly what you deserve brother, because it's like I've said since the beginning man, the more things change, the more things remain the same. And as I rode down here and I thought about Hulkamania brother, the saying of your prayers, the taking of vitamins, brother I thought about you. I thought about wrestling you in front of seventy thousand people in Atlanta, brother. I thought about Starrcade, man. And I thought about the beginning of a new era in professional wrestling, dude. But brother, this era is not over just yet. I won't let it, brother. And as much as I respect you dude, I've got one question for ya. WHATCHA GONNA DO... WHATCHA GONNA DO BROTHER, WHEN HULKAMANIA RUNS WILD ON!" Goldberg nods respectfully as Hogan pats him on the shoulder, walks off and signs another autograph. The Extreme Innovators individually and collectively have been on a roll, and there were some spots that were simply subliminal as they innovated ruthlessly to create double spots that wowed the crowd. Saturn really enjoyed dishing it up to Nash who he beat at Nitro. Curt Hennig joined Vincent at ringside, and he was watching a slowed down version of the match as the Outsiders resumed control and dominance. Hennig went to argue with referee Nick Patrick, but as he did so, he accidentally clipped the foot of Scott Hall, allowing Kanyon to drop toe hold him, and then go for a quick pin fall, which Hall kicked out of at two. Hall though went over to Nash, and began arguing with him, asking him what he was doing. Nash proclaimed his innocence, allowing Kanyon to hit a school boy roll up for another two count. Nash slapped the back of Hall, tagging himself in, and Nash then went to town clearing house, and setting Kanyon up for the Jackknife Powerbomb for the win. Result: Your winner, the Outsiders
After the match, as 'Big Sexy' Kevin Nash had his arm held aloft, Scott Hall entered the ring and got in Nash's face. Nash, still not comprehending why the change in attitude in Hall had come about, looked shocked and dismayed, but then just brushed off Hall and strode over the top rope to the back, shaking his head in disappointment.
'Lord' Steven Regal v 'Your Olympic Hero' Kurt Angle At the top of the match, WCW's head doctor came to the ring and advised Kurt Angle to leave the ring. The neck-braced Angle shrugged off the doctors warning. He then proceeded to battle a good mat match with Regal, before trying to lift him for the Olympic Slam. However, Angle's neck gave way and he dropped to the mat. Regal covered the struggling Angle and got the victory. Result: Your winner, Steven Regal
Post match, 'Lord' Steven Regal looked back in disdain at 'Your Olympic Hero' Kurt Angle, who was grasping at his neck. Regal you could see consciously thought about attacking Angle post belt, but in the end, even he could see that that would be too much, and left the ring with his look of contempt. The EMT's came to the ring, and tried to stabilise Angle's neck once more. They appeared to be getting him onto the stretcher, when Masahiro Chono rushed the ring, and threw Angle off the stretcher. Angle got up gingerly... Kenka Kick! Angle's neck snapped back again. What the hell is wrong with Masahiro Chono?
Wrath v 'Big Poppa Pump' Scott Steiner Wrath and Scott Steiner were brawling an average match, one where momentum stopped and stalled and never really went anywhere. Taz threw a lead pipe into the ring for Scott Steiner, as Taz distracted referee Billy Silverman. Steiner clubbed it over the back of the head of Wrath, and then put on the Steiner Recliner. With Wrath out, the referee called for the bell. Result: Your winner, Scott Steiner
Backstage, Disco Inferno runs into Kimberly Page in the back hallways. He puts his arm against the wall over her, and gets in her face. "Where ya going, toots?" He asks. She doesn't answer, looking fearful, and looking left and right for help. Disco's look of rage though turns to despair, and he removes his arm from the wall. "Go on, leave," he says softly. She does so, as Disco watches her run away. "Why does my heart hurt so bad?" He asks himself, as we fade away to a break. BAM! That's why! So Raven can throw him head first into it. Overall, despite a quick twenty second period of stiff kicks from Lash Le Roux, Raven was all over him like a rash, setting him up for the Evenflow DDT. Result: Your winner, and STILL WCW Television Champion, Raven
Backstage, Pamela Paulshock stands by with WCW United States Champion, 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit, who paces backwards and forth behind her, looking concerned. "Chris Benoit, in a couple of short weeks, you stand to have a shot at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Many are saying it's due recognition of perhaps the best in ring professional wrestler alive today. But that match is reliant on if can get past Ric Flair tonight, here on Thunder." Benoit continues to look floor bound, with his hands on his hips in a tea-pot pose, pacing backwards and forth. "Chris?" Finally, Benoit snaps out of it and heads to the microphone. "Pamela, the whole situation stinks to high heavens," Benoit says. "I've been through it all. I've been stretched in the dungeon by Stu Hart, I had a real life altercation over a Woman here in World Championship Wrestling. I've wrestled as the Pegasus Kid, and I've gone to the land of the Extreme. But nothing, NOTHING... prepares you for the shock of your life to find you must face your idol, your mentor, the man you one day aspire to be." Benoit goes to leave, but then turns back and looks crazed at Pamela, and then into the camera. "But even Ric Flair knows, nothing... NOTHING... stops a man's will to become the next... World... Heavyweight... Champion!" Benoit's teeth grit, as his eye's pierce the camera as we fade away.
Steel Cage Match 'Macho Man' Randy Savage v Sting An intruging match as the two defeated contestants from the World Heavyweight Championship match at World War III confront each other. These two have had a terse relationship largely since Savage came to WCW. Yes, they were allies, but one never really trusted each other. And so to start this match off, each man was skeptical to meet and tie up, before finally they did and Savage pushed Sting into the corner. The match was largely confined to an old school type of match with much corner work, some chain wrestling, and some mat wrestling. Basic scoop slams and suplexes were also involved, but it didn't involve the intracity of some of the modern athletes. You wouldn't say this was an 'all out' match, more your work the crowd type fixture. Savage was more inclined to use the cage as a weapon, and the madness of that man's mind made this extremely difficult for Sting to survive from, let alone win. The man was losing face paint and skin folds as much as Billy Ray Cyrus lost the plot with Achy Breaky Heart. Don't tell my heart, my achy breaky heart, I just don't think you'd understand... Understand what? That this song of a steaming pile of you know what? Savage kept Sting down for extended periods, and this built the face faith from the crowd who kept pushing for Sting to make a comeback, but time and time again his comeback was thwarted by Savage and deceitful tactics. Finally, Savage had enough, and he went outside, and slid under the ring to pull out a steel chair. He climbed back in the ring, and looked set to slam it over the head of Sting, but Bret 'The Hitman' Hart raced down to ringside, and grabbed the key from the ring attendant, and got into the cage, and before Savage could use the chair, pulled it from his hands. Sting got up, inside cradle...1...2.....thr... NO! Both men rolled back up, ducked clothesline from Savage by Sting, SCORPION DEATH DROP! There's the cover...1..2..3! Sting wins! Result: Your winner, Sting
Post match, as the cage rose, Sting looked on confused. His face paint nearly eradicated by the verocity of the match, he couldn't quite work out what Bret 'The Hitman' Hart's presence was. Hart though asked for a microphone to help explain himself. "Ever since I've come to the WCW," Hart began, "I've been dismayed at these types of moments. I've been dismayed by the lack of unity in that dressing room out the back, a dressing room that I believe is holding back some future greats through the nepotism and lack of honour that abounds it. It has got to the point where I almost wish the New World Order win the fateful match at Starrcade," the crowd begin to boo, "To give the WCW and all it's great fans a new start. A new start away from politicians like Randy Savage.... And you... Sting. Yeah, I came ouuuuuut here, and you think I've come to save your [BEEP]. No, I've just come out here because unlike you Sting, I've never changed. I've never stopped believing in what I believe in. Truth, honesty, trust, honour, passion. The elements that combine to make me the Excellence of Execution. And Sting, come December 27th, when I lock you in the Sharpshooter, you're going to have a very good chance to think. To think about the trash that you are, to think about the disregard for these great fans that you secretly have. To think abouuuuut how you can't even make my Sharpshooter, which you disrespectfully reterm the Scorprion Death Lock, as deadly as I make it. And you want to know why? Because I am the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever wi.." Sting snatches the microphone from Hart, and looks at him, as he still gasps for air from the match. "You said to mail my answer through the pony express about the match?" Hart smiles and nods. Sting turns to leave, but then turns around and stiff kicks a stunned Hart to the head! Hart rebounds over the top rope to the floor! "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! At Starrcade, it's SHOWTIME... FOLKS!" Hart looks on in dismay, grasping at his jaw, as we fade to a break.
Non Title Match WCW United States Champion 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit v 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair At the start of the match, the two men exchanged a handshake, before going to work on a grueling match. A match that was in many ways largely confined to the match, and featuring some of Ric Flair's fabled basic spots, including the nose flop, the roll over dive throw from the top rope, the stumble along the apron to the top rope, the low blow, and the strut. It's the same old routine for over 20 years, but it's still legendary, and it still evokes outrageous responses from the crowd. Benoit was asked to be the ring leader in this one, and more than anything, with the mat wrestling featuring a lot of reversals and technical grips and holds, it highlighted just how dangerous, and how brilliant a wrestler he had become. Time and time again he had the veteran Flair, who has seen it all, gasping for air, trying to find a solution, trying to go through the memory vault of thousands of hours of professional wrestling to find a way out. And often, he did. After a great spot of mat wrestling, and some of Flair's fabled spots, Flair tried to take the match back to a vertical base. Flair was struggling with his joints from the horrendous submission holds Benoit had tendered on him, but he still tried to get Benoit into the corners for his reverse knife edge chops. But he found a man of his own heart, who repeatedly turned Flair back in and chopped him just as hard. The crowd was getting... well, rabid, off the back of the chops which could be heard through the arena. Several near falls with inside cradles, suplexes followed by pins, bridging suplexes followed, before Benoit finally got the wrist lock in place for the German Suplex. He hit one, then another... and then... Wow, another! With Flair dazed, Benoit picked him up with a front chancery lock, into a ... front face buster, sit out style. Very innovative, and amazingly destructive. Showing no mercy for his mentor, Benoit went high... Diving Headbutt! He went for the Crippler Crossface, and Flair had the where-with-all to try and bite the arm of Benoit, but Benoit merely slapped his mouth hard, and reapplied it, causing Flair to tap quickly. Result: Your winner, Chris Benoit
Post match, 'Rabid Wolverine' Chris Benoit sat in the middle of the ring, allowing air to get into his lungs to expand his rib cage and lungs from the hellacious chops he had received. Finally, 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair came to, and the two men embraced in the center of the ring. What the.. What the hell? Finally, the cage comes into play, as it's dropping... quickly! Flair and Benoit go to leave, but are too late! What the hell is that? Backstage we can see 'Easy E' Eric Bischoff lowering the cage, as 'Big Poppa Pump' Scott Steiner, 'The Human Suplex Machine' Taz, Curt Hennig, 'K-Dawg' Konnan, WCW World Heavyweight Champion 'Lionheart' Chris Jericho and 'The Master of the Diamond Cutter' Diamond Dallas Page all head ringside. They enter the cage door, while Vincent keeps guard. Once the nWo is in the cage, Vincent locks the door. The beat down ensues! Benoit and Flair stand no chance! This is chaos! Both men are cut wide open... Oh my... What the hell is Big Poppa Pump doing... he's raking Flair's head against the cage. Hello Nurse Ryan Lynn! Bischoff looks distracted, and drops the remote control for a second, and it's picked up by 'The Enforcer' Arn Anderson! Bischoff struggles to get it back, but Anderson's stronger grip keeps hold of it. Anderson starts raising the cage, as Bill Goldberg, 'The Man of 1000 Holds' Dean Malenko, Hulk Hogan and 'The Total Package' Lex Luger race down to ringside, causing the nWo to disperse through the crowd, but the damage has already been done.
