Music by Period Poll Nominations

This seems like a fun thing to do... We, as the all-knowing hive mind of GDS, will determine the best song from each decade in each genre of music. We will make nominations, then vote in a tournament type fashion. First, we must nominate periods to poll in. To start: Best Rock Song: 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's Best Rap Song: 80's, 90's, 00's Best Pop Song: 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's Best Rock Group: 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's Best Rap Group: 80's, 90's, 00's Best Pop Group: 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's Best Music in a Video Game: 80's, 90's, 00's Best One Hit Wonder: All Time Best Solo Artist: 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's I'd start with those as they'll no doubt be interesting. I wasn't sure: Should we split rock into sub-genres? Like, should we have a metal poll, an alternative poll, etc.? I don't think so, as that'd be tough to separate in some cases... Go ahead, suggest styles and periods, and also any ideas or suggestions for the whole polling process... This is all off the top of my head, but I'm sure it'll come together! :D

Great idea... but I was thinking whether to just keep it to the actual era... because some songs get horribly misclassified, and some are really their own genre and unique. Especially some of the earlier stuff, some things become very hard to classify when they are setting the scene. Some things are easily pigeonholed as rock, or metal, or pop, or rap, but some things are just confused and that's their brilliance.

If we had Metal and Rock as genres, and it were the 70's, where would Led Zeppelin go? How in the blue hell could we separate Indy and Mainstream in a lot of cases? (The Killers are a Top 40 band, but still pretty indy sounding...) Hell, what are the Beastie Boys? Rap? Rock? Pop? So, I suggest we only split by the most distinctive genres: Rock, Rap, and Pop. Everything should fit in there somewhere... Right?
Linkin Park even for a more up-to-date band.. they are like raprock. Slipknot is considered Rapcore yet I see them as Metal. It's so hard to say an exact Genre for anything now days.
Yeah it does get very confusing, I've seen people group Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit and Korn all as Nu Metal. Actually, I think I've also seen Slipknot in the same group too.

ATTENTION! You can continue suggesting poll categories, but I think now we can start an actual poll! I've randomly determined the first category will be Best Music in a Video Game: 90's. You may nominate up to 3 GAMES, not songs. Nominate by PMing me. I'll update this post with nominations so you don't double-up. I'll start with my own choices: 1. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Gen) 2. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64) 3. GoldenEye 007 (N64) 4. Cannon Fodder (Amiga) 5. Metal Gear Solid (PS1) 6. Final Fantasy VII (PS1) 7. Parappa The Rapper (PS1) 8. Bust A Groove (PS1) 9. Super Mario World (SNES) 10. Crash Bandicoot (PS1) 11. Tekken (PS1) 12. Paper Mario (N64) 13. WCW Nitro (PS1) 14. Twisted Metal 2 (PS1) 15. Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES) 16. Donkey Kong Country 3 (SNES) 17. Yoshi's Island (SNES) 18. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (GEN) 19. Mortal Kombat (ARC, GEN) 20. Grand Theft Auto (PS1, PC) EDIT: I believe the cut-off will be 32, so get those noms in!

I think we'd need to be VERY careful about some of these categories and how we define them. Some of these things are bound to spark arguments to get the whole thread off track otherwise. Like I would immediately throw out the One-Hit Wonder completely. Too many sticking points. Like take a Billy Ray Cyrus. Do you include him in the category because of the crossover of Achy Breaky Heart or (properly) DQ him because of genre hits like Busy Man and Some Gave All? What about someone like The Rembrandts who hit pretty well in 1991 with Just The Way It Is Baby before they scored the smash that folks tend to count as their one and only? Or Spandau Ballet who may have been one-hit wonders in the U.S but had overwhelming success in Europe? Just too many ways it can turn ugly and become an invitation to Adam locking it on us. And the Pop categories. Again they could be thorny because of the changing perceptions of time. In the 60's and even some into the 70's, "Pop" would have been seen almost totally as the bubblegum stuff. Your Leslie Gore, your Little Peggy March or later on stuff like Green Tambourine by The Lemon Pipers or The Jackson 5. Nowadays pretty much anything that isn't all loud and crunchy seems to get shunted into "pop". And that would not do justice to the soft rock of the 70's and 80's, the more mid-range stuff of like a Matchbox Twenty or a whole lot of artists that seemed to get lumped into "pop" these days.

I'll leave everything up there, and when we get to those polls we can decide if they're workable or not. With proper guidelines, things should work out.

ERGH! I've gotten 2 PM's and a post in here that have been incorrect. This is nomination time. If it's on the list, it's nominated! No need to double up! So, if you see it already listed, list something else! (Also, via PM if you don't mind... Don't want to clog up this thread!)
I'd also like a best Techno song. 2000s only please, none of that 90s crap techno.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uqm891_egE
You've confused me there. You don't want any 90's crap Techno but then you've linked to The Prodigy - Voodoo People. Are you using that as an example of "crap 90's Techno" or do you think Voodoo People was released in the 2000's? Either way you're wrong!
