Have you cracked Cult? Or are you still at high-Regional?
I'm in Cult, just barely and probably before I should be - but it's an owner goal, so what can you do? I've got two regions that are there, the others are hovering around the E+ pop/E to E+ Importance mark. I have a few hundred thousand in the bank, so it's a question of stabilising money loss for a while by building my audience and getting to a place where I can charge more. It should, just about, be possible, but it's a close run thing. Fortunately, both industry and economy are pretty damn high right now.

Whistler takes up the microphone with a flourish. “Travis, I already told you once; after all you've done to me this past year, it's time for war. Now I know you boys aren't interested in defending those tag titles of yours. I know your strange little reasons. “So Jackie boy and me, we put out heads together and we took a different tack.” He raps twice, hard, on the table. “One of you gets Jackie, and one of you gets this while they do. The other one gets chained to me and... well, we'll see who walks out. No skin off my nose which; I said war and I meant it, and I know the risks. “Between you and me, Travis, I want you on the other end of this chain. You've never exactly been a coward so much as a headstrong loon, so how about it? Send your boy out now and I'll see you when you're done!” Tables Match vs. w/ Black Jack Marlowe vs. Troy Tornado w/ Professor Nero In terms of the potential these two display, this match is a revelation; they show an instinctive understanding of each others' positioning, pace, and attitude that means that shots are crisp, counters and throws are perfectly timed and high-effect, and Marlowe's concentration on brawling meshes perfectly with Tornado's all-round game. They work the stip effectively, too; a particularly memorable spot has Marlowe whip Tornado to the ropes and attempt a backdrop to send him into the table, but Tornado's momentum and Marlowe's power sees Troy overshoot slightly, clipping the table and turning it over, but not breaking it. A Jackhammer attempt goes awry, too, when Tornado rakes the eyes and twists clear, hitting the ropes to deliver the Unstoppable Lariat. With Marlowe out of it, Tornado dumps him on the table, goes to the ropes, gets the nod from Nero and hits a beautiful moonsault into Marlowe and through the table. It's a moment that rapidly enters the credits sequence of News of the War and stays there. Crowd reaction is phenomenal; no one saw these two producing a match so captivating this early in their careers. Jason Azaria's commentary deserves mention, too; he praises Tornado, the HGC man, and by the time he's done no one could fault Marlowe for not getting the victory. Both men look stronger. Troy Tornado defeated Black Jack Marlowe Rating: C DOG COLLAR MATCH vs. w/ Whistler vs. Travis Century w/ Professor Nero This match doesn't have a chance of competing with the speed and dynamism of the previous, and while Whistler and Century both do their best to make the brawl as intense as they can to help, using the chain with a degree of creativity and dynamism. Century's mantras this time are not the usual accusations of overreaching pride; Whistler is branded a fool, a warmonger, and chided for not accepting the peace Century brings – which inspires Whistler to greater heights, ultimately wrapping a length of the chain around his forearm to deliver a Rebel Yell that sprays blood across the mat – and allows him the pin. At ringside, Nero nods sadly, then nods again as Whistler looks at him; a respectful sign, followed as Whistler turns away by a cruel smirk. Whistler defeated Travis Century Rating: D+ The video screen comes into play immediately following that match; a selection of Wanda Fish's more innovative ringside assaults intercut with Hatoyama's in-ring highspots and a montage of footage of both women preparing. Finally, it shifts to a live feed; Horatio Dangerous watches Wanda tape her wrists and head for the locker room door, while in splitscreen Kit Hatoyama reclines on Gilmore, both kissing with no apparent concern for the camera – which also takes in a thin coil of rope and a SHIBARI FOR DUMMIES book on the floor. Judging by fan reaction, this is better than the previous match. vs. Kit Hatoyama vs. Wanda Fish Bad news for Philly Pro's fledgling women's roster; the two obvious top talents and figureheads are at sixes and sevens in the ring, unable to communicate fluidly despite Hatoyama's fluent grasp of English and Fish's solid understanding of Japanese. That – and the primarily-airborne nature, never Philly Pro fans' dearest desire – prevent this from being what it should have been, though it remains above the level of most TV opening contests. After ten minutes of evenly-matched action, Fish manages to keep Kit down with a DDT and goes to the ropes, landing a corkscrew moonsault to carry the day. Wanda Fish defeated Kit Hatoyama Rating: D- The Man In Black hits next, and a man who has been loved and loathed by the Philly Pro fans emerges, making his way carefully down to the ring. “A lot of you remember,” he says, “that I came here first after my knee injury looked like it ended my career. “Well, guess what? Over in Japan... I screwed up my knee. “I knew I'd done it when I accepted Rocky's challenge. But I'd had the surgery. Figured I'd be ready. “This morning... the docs didn't clear me. “This ain't an excuse. I told Rocky he gets the match, and whatever you think of me – and frankly, I don't care – I stick by my word. But it's not tonight.” “You WHAT?” Chris Rockwell arrives on the scene fast, microphone in hand. “Pete... I can't believe this. “You know what wrestling you to an actual finish means to me. I mean, I'm sure you do. I did my best to make that pretty damn clear. “You're telling me... what? I still have to wait to prove I am what I say I am?” He waves his free hand at the crowd in attendance. “I set out to be Chris Rockwell to prove something to myself. And I like to think that whenever I come out here, whenever I show the world what it is to be Chris Rockwell, I show that anyone can achieve. Whatever you're good at, guys... I set out to do this as well as I can. In your life, there's something like that. And you can do it just like I did. “I need to beat you, Pete. I need to know I can.” Hall shrugs. “Sorry.” “Fine,” Rockwell sighs, after a long moment. “I set out to be Chris Rockwell before I knew it was possible. I can live without knowing... for now. But Pete – I want you at your best and back competing soon. Please, please – don't make this worse than it has to be. I will come looking for you if I have to. This is going to get done – and you need to understand that. “Right now... Right now I'm throwing out an open challenge. Someone come out here and test yourself.” And, just as happened in January a year ago, Horatio Dangerous emerges to answer Rockwell's challenge... vs. w/ Chris Rockwell vs. Horatio Dangerous w/ Jack Giedroyc The match is virtually a mirror image of the previous one, crowd reaction at the same level – though in fairness to those involved, they produce that reaction with five less minutes to play with. This time, Rockwell, gets the upper hand in the end, after Dangerous fights hard – even desperately – for some time; after Rockwell takes him down and transitions to the Fujiwara armbar, the camera settles in on Dangerous' face, where desperation is shown clearly; he holds out a long time, trying various methods of breaking the hold, all unsuccessful, before, finally, he nods to Fair and Fair calls the match for Rockwell. Chris Rockwell defeated Horatio Dangerous Rating: C- w/ vs. Joel Bryant w/ Herb Stately vs. Ricky Dale Johnson As RATM's No Shelter hits and the HGC star emerges to face Bryant, Azaria is audibly thrown, opening with “I, uh... I didn't prepare for this...” Cowboy Ricky Dale in HGC, Sidewinder in NYCW, Johnson gets his surname and ditches his Western theme finally here, though it's still a far cry from the RDJ persona he'll eventually return from injury with in TCW. Bryant challenges him well as Azaria smoothly transitions into his usual face-sympathetic role now he has a popular HGC man to cheer for, but Ricky has an answer for everything, powering out of Bryant's holds, clubbing him down before he can set up suplexes, and demonstrating a wide range of explosive shots. It looks for the longest time like he's got this won, and he goes to the second rope to set up for the Leaping Lariat; Stately promptly grabs his ankle, the launch doesn't work, and Bryant snatches him out of the air to convert it into the One Shot Drop, getting the pinfall immediately afterward. Joel Bryant defeated Ricky Dale Johnson Rating: C+ w/ vs. w/ Demon Anger w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Tom Gilmore w/ Kit Hatoyama Anger never once, throughout this match, goes for a pin; as Azaria sings his praises, switching back effortlessly to a heelish, pro-Hollyweird attitude, he simply assaults Gilmore, hitting him with vicious assault after vicious assault, seemingly setting out to leave Gilmore crippled. Early on, while Gilmore can still muster some level of counter-attack, Goldworthy slips Fair something, obviously bribing the corrupt official. In time, however, that's just not enough; after Gilmore's offence stalls out, Anger just carries on, smearing blood over the canvas, crushing him with shot after shot, punishing him with five consecutive Demon Slams. In the end, even Jay Fair stops the match in sympathy for Gilmore, awarding a win to Anger. Satisfied, he leaves as Kit rolls into the ring, checking on Gilmore. After nearly a minute, Gilmore makes it back to his feet. Demon Anger defeated Tom Gilmore Rating: C- Bluegrass Blues hits and Man Mountain Cahill appears, backed up by Emma Chase. “I booked this time,” she smiles, “because no one would agree to give my client a match. “This is Philly Pro. It's the third company in the United States to hit Pay-Per-View. And this man beside me is a former Tri-State champion – the belt you're about to see defended. “And we couldn't get a match on the first Pay-Per-View. It's like someone doesn't want this company to succeed. “Fortunately, there are always new volunteers to enter Cahill's Corner. Equally fortunately, in the over seven thousand here tonight – there's still only one real man, right at my side.” She pauses and glances back over her shoulder, biting her lower lip, as she says that before shaking her head and getting back to it. “Still, someone else thinks he is. Simon?” Once again, a big man hops the rail. This guy's wearing kickboxing gloves; he sheds his shirt without a qualm, an impressive physique showing through. Squaring up against Cahill, he draws a leg back for a kick- Cahill's fist gets there first, bowling him over. Lifting him up, he suplexes him, then lifts him again for a Cahill Crunch. After that, the big man lies still. Cahill nods in satisfaction and glances back to Chase for approval. She gives it in a smile, and the two exit... PPPW Tri-State Championship vs. Brent Hill © vs. Human Arsenal This contest goes nearly nineteen minutes before the end, and at no point does it look like either Hill or Arsenal is clearly the better man – both of them are just performing on a stellar level relative to much of the roster. It's difficult to say who to root for, as Arsenal refuses to cheat and it's just a case of two very capable wrestlers pulling out everything. Even with Fair down after Hill unintentionally suplexes Arsenal on top of him, Arsenal won't cheat... But Charlie Thatcher will. He's in the ring fast and on Hill just as fast, wiping him out with a huge boot. Arsenal stares at him, incredulous – and somehow, blood still staining his face and chest, Tom Gilmore makes it down the aisle, baseball bat in hand. Thatcher pulls up short as Fair comes to, then goes for Gilmore, who manages to swing before he's wiped out. Both men go down, and Fair, seeing all the confusion, calls a double disqualification to Arsenal's evident frustration. Brent Hill went to a double DQ with Human Arsenal Rating: B- While not the best show Philly Pro has produced, their first Pay-Per-View is a remarkable success, with more than one match producing above expectations. Next on SWF 24/7: Shooting For The Big Time. Show Rating: C
Well PPV's grade didn't exactly match the level of your diary, but I'm sure it made your fictional accountant have a heart attack from the shear amount of money you just made.
If I'd reversed Gilmore/Anger and Bryant/Johnson I'd probably have gotten a much better grade, but I didn't expect Bryant/Johnson to deliver as well as he did. We made a loss on the month overall, but we pretty much doubled ticket sales on the PPV and it definitely helped absorb a lot of the cost. It's going to be close, I think - but we can do it, so long as the shows stay strong.

At a time when my company was stumbling, when the head of Creative at the time wanted to step down... “I can't really apologise for what I did, is I guess what I'm saying. “In the middle of 1998 the scene was very different from a couple of months before. Not just that there was another pay-per-view company – because to look at the numbers, y'know, HGC was doing about a third the business we were doing – and, actually, dropping, but there were reasons for that – but at the same time, Sam Strong's company was pulling in fifty times the audience Philly Pro had. They were definitely on the way up, no question, but... y'know, there was a long way to go. “Ah... At the same time, our company's just lost the head of Creative, in part after Sam and I had a... disagreement... about the immediate direction. And we're two weeks from the Supreme Challenge, so here I am staring down the barrel at the biggest show of our year and we've kind of come off the rails. “So I can talk about how Philly Pro wasn't, y'know, in any real sense a... a threat, a competitor... but I recognised then and I recognise now that Horatio had done pretty damn well with them. He didn't have the money that HGC had. He didn't have the same level of name power that it started out with, although by that time, with Sam Strong going into his first retirement and Rip Chord leaving to start up SCCW, and BLZ Bubb leaving because... Honestly, I never inquired, so I don't know... “Their clout was starting to dwindle a bit, y'know, though Sam had some young guys he was doing surprisingly well and bringing up. Horatio brought in a lot of his talent, but most of it was still talent in the raw, workers who needed shaping. He was just starting to bring in some finished products for support around this time. “It seemed perfectly logical to me to offer him our new open position, and from the context I still maintain it was. But told as part of Philly Pro's story...” He smiles for a second and nods as if conceding something. “Well, I guess I get to play the villain here. But that's fair, y'know; it's a fascinating story. And I did make the offer.” -- “I thought about it for a long time,” Dangerous agrees. “In the end I phoned up Two Eagles, who was the guy I knew best in something near SWF creative. “We talked for a long time about the pros and cons of it all. Yes, he was sure Richard would agree to me bringing my sons with me, which would have got them where they ended up years ahead of time. “Yes, I'd have a lot more limiters on me. I'd have less freedom. But on the other hand, the talent they had... my work would look better just because of who was doing it. Christian Faith in his prime. Bruce, already right on the edge of superstardom. My old buddy Major Reginald. Phil Roberts. Sean McFly – who I never did get to work with. Sam Keith, who I wanted to wrestle so badly for so long. Mr Supreme. A chance to grapple with the Masked Patriot gimmick...” He smiles. “Though I always preferred Whistler to that particular Patriot. “It was a very, very tempting offer.”

Read through the whole thing and may I say "wow". This is phenominal. It tells the story of PPPW so well that I think Ryland should be reading this to make it part of the CVerse canon. Even the Dangerous family being created is so well written that it doesn't make me even realize they're NOT in the C-Verse. The storylines are really well written and thought out and now I see where all the hype for this diary comes from. Top work Phantom. Eddie Chandler vs. John Maverick w/ Floyd Goldworthy - Unfortunately it isn't Eddie's time to shine yet. Cool pairing here as these two later form Elite. All ya need is Dan DaLay Human Arsenal vs. The Natural Anyone noticing a trend of future Canadian workers being jobbed out? Charlie Thatcher & Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy & Helen Bach vs. Ricky Dale Johnson & ???? RDJ. Mystery Guy. Yeah I'll take that.

We're sadly well past the point where I can claim even pseudo-canon as far as we've already gone - the East Coast War officially ends when Johnny Martin unites the straps this past March, and thus far none of the four main players are out of business. (In fact, XFW are probably really glad we've gone Cult - less pressure on them through the regional battles, which are HELL to lose when you're at war with three other companies.) That said, I really like this continuity - though I feel sorry for Rapid Pro's main belt, held by Cousin Ezra since Steve Flash left for Canada. In C-Verse canon, Braun takes it off Flash and holds it until it's unified. (Also in C-Verse canon, Chris Rockwell has already been Tri-State champ). I'm currently watching Rip Chord's newly forming SCCW with great interest. Whistler originally wins the vacant title for the first time - I suspect it'll be Rip, but I'd laugh if we duplicated Whistler's win, and I also have to give Whistler a lot of love following this diary so far.

Tornado has handed his title belt to Nero who carries it slung over his shoulder; by contrast, Travis Century wears his proudly. Nero leans in one corner, arms resting lightly on the ropes; Tornado stays close behind Century, tyre iron held loosely in his hand. Century has no microphone, but as ever, a hush settles through the Asylum. “So you come for me again,” he begins. “Whistler, you talk of war – and you have no understanding. By taking the toys of the false idols from circulation, we promote peace. You, a former soldier, chafe at this – but it's the devil's work that you do. I tell you again that no matter what you do, these trophies will never be offered for competition-” Nero, microphone in hand, cuts in. “Not quite true.” A puzzled expression crosses Century's face, and he turns to stare at the Professor. “You see, Travis...” The Professor smiles. “You've been an excellent spiritual advisor, and I truly do thank you for it. Your efforts are well-meant and I'm sure that you've inspired these people in your own way.” Behind Century, a hooded figure rolls into the ring. “So I'd love to continue to take your advice, to seek still to save my soul... But I'm afraid I'm just set in my ways.” He nods past Century's shoulder, and Century turns – and gets speared from the second turnbuckle by the newcomer! Tornado steps forward and brings the tyre iron down on Century's skull. The newcomer grabs the downed preacher and hefts him across his stomach before dropping down into a backbreaker and immediately springing back up, pitching Century back over his head with an explosive T-Bone out of the backbreaker. “Wait a minute,” Azaria mutters. “I've seen that before. Scouting tapes of Eddie Chandler in DaVE, Tom Gilmore with the Stones...” The figure picks himself back up and, by now, the hood has fallen back from his face. “That's him!” Azaria yells. “That's Dog Fyte! DaVE's most vicious darling!” Dog Fyte and Troy Tornado continue to deliver an astonishingly severe beating to Century as Nero watches, applauding quietly. The tyre iron comes into frequent play. After almost two minutes Rockin' in the Free World begins to blare through the Asylum sound system – and Whistler charges out, chair at the ready. After a tense moment, Nero smiles. “Sure,” he tells Whistler. “We're done with him.” Presenting the second tag belt to Dog Fyte, the new Disciples make their way back up the ramp as the camera settles on Whistler standing protectively over his long-term enemy's body. “My God,” Azaria offers, apparently stunned. “The shortest fuse and the hottest temper on the East Coast is under Nero's control.” vs. w/ Eddie Chandler vs. John Maverick w/ Floyd Goldworthy A fairly short match without a great deal of spark, in part due to Chandler and Maverick both having little exposure in the Lakes and in part due to the lack of momentum Chandler carries going in. It's a good, solid even contest throughout, with Goldworthy finally tipping the scales; he waves something toward Chandler, a photo by the looks of things, that's gone before the camera can get a look at it – but Chandler did, and he pulls up short, leaving him open to a boot to the gut and the Deadly Silence. He's just picked up his Big Mac when Stately appears at the other side of the table. “Hey,” Stately says urgently as Cahill watches him, Big Mac stuck halfway to his mouth. “Look, I wanted to warn you, man... Look at what's happening. Karloff's got two massive buddies. Remember what I always used to tell you when Goldworthy came looking to tag you two? Well, it's even worse. “You've become just another big man, Ronnie. You shouldn't be – you're the best of all of 'em, and not just in Philly Pro either. “She doesn't have a plan, does she? She's just going to leave this to happen to you, Ronnie! She'll have her hooks into someone else and leave you to rot.” Stately's urgency hasn't dropped. “Come on, man. You and Joel – you can rule this company. But you need someone who cares looking out for you.” There's a sound at the door. Stately glances up then leaves hurriedly in the other direction. Cahill watches him go, then shrugs and turns back to his burger. In a little under the fifteen minute time limit Arsenal brings the Natural down with an Ammo Dump. Human Arsenal defeated The Natural Rating: C Backstage again in the interview area, and Ricky Dale Johnson looks at the ceiling briefly, collecting his thoughts, before looking back down at the camera. The drawl he sports in HGC is diminished, a Texas accent still audible but not emphasised. “I came here to wrestle,” he begins. “Nothin' special, nothin' fancy. Just came here to wrestle. It's how I've always made a living. I like to think I do it well. Saw this as a place I could come to just forget the distractions and get down to it. “I didn't come here as part of Money's twisted agenda. Didn't have an agenda of my own, neither. “And I spent Sunday morning in a hospital talkin' to Tom Gilmore. When I met him the first time, they called him Angry. I didn't think much of it, but yesterday, while he was getting' himself back together enough to leave the hospital... Man, he was furious. I don't much envy Anger his next few weeks. “Now I asked to go up against a coupla Money's boys tonight. Figured I needed to prove where my loyalties don't lie – and I invited Tom to tag with me. “He couldn't make it, but he knew a feller was willing to join me. Rich, Charlie – this boy does have an agenda. Same one Tom has. Same one I think I might have ta run with until we've sorted things out. “He don't like you, and Tom don't like you, and the three of us are of a mind to break your little mob up. Folks round here should recognise him, but up til now he's been biggest in Canada. Here he is... Alt by FINisher “...STEVE FLASH!” w/ vs. Charlie Thatcher & Rich Money w/ Floyd Goldworthy vs. Ricky Dale Johnson & Steve Flash With only ten minutes to go, this match had little chance to live up to Arsenal and Carvill's showcase, but the four men in the ring all go to the limits of their abilities, Flash using his startling new appearance as well as his technical arsenal to stymie and stun Money with mind games and matwork. Johnson and Thatcher start to slug it out toward the end of the match, the new HGC International Champion losing slightly on each exchange to Thatcher's power but coming back as he pulls the crowd into it. But one man is seldom a match for two monsters – and Karloff, up on the apron, cuts off the setup for Johnson's Leaping Lariat with a fist before throwing Johnson all the way to the floor. As the Golden Age concede a DQ loss, Ricky Dale Johnson ends the program glassy-eyed and concussed. Ricky Dale Johnson & Steve Flash win by DQ Rating: D An awkward finish drags the show down overall, leaving the episode to bolster Philly Pro only in its weaker areas. Next on SWF 24/7: War reaffirmed. Show Rating: D
Holy **** It's ****ing Steve ****ing Flash! Holy ****ing ****!

^ What he said.
I'm glad to see it had the right effect. I've been trying sporadically to sign Steve since he left Rapid in... *checks* February, citing an interest in focusing on Canada. A chunk of that is... well, those reactions match my own, in this era (and especially on the East Coast). Part of it is FIN's kick-ass alt, which has been writing stories in my head since I saw it first. (Side note: Steve Flash's theme, as anyone who saw Comradebot's NYCW diary knows, is 'Spirit in the Sky'. While he wears the paint, however, it's 'Cry Little Sister' from The Lost Boys.)

Good work for making it work. Great choice on the music for him, BTW. Love that.
I've loved that Flash alt since I first saw and just couldn't find a way to make use of it. Good work for making it work.
It was always planned to be literal 'warpaint', hence the shirt name. Originally I had vague plans of grabbing Gonzales, Frankie Future, Steve and Johnny Martin to run a direct East Coast War invasion angle, but first off I didn't wanna outright kill those feds and second, there's no way Johnny Martin will sign for someone not called Phil Vibert. ;) I don't yet know how long he'll have the paint. Might not be for long, might be forever as far as Philly Pro goes - I can't really predict angles anymore. They get out of hand.

Steve Flash! Nuff Said. Never thought I'd see him in this diary but now with PPPW growing you might have to go back and rewrite some of the stuff because I don't see DaVE outliving PPPW =P. Not with the HGC Connection and DaVE now. Do you have a working agreement with HGC btw?
