Wednesday, week 1, January 2003

Rhodes Fieldhouse, Searcy, AR.

(Pre show) Potter defeated Robert Roode in 8:59 by submission with a Sharpshooter. C-

During an in-ring promo, Tony Schiavone tells the crowd that tonight, we will see Ken Shamrock vs Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Jerry Lynn in a triangle match! D+

I'm hoping this creates a decent main event as a one off.

Abyss announces that he has decided to give himself a challenge tonight, and if he cannot win the match in under 5 minutes he'll admit defeat. He introduces Alex Shane as his opponent.E

Abyss v Alex Shane - five minute hardcore challenge match

Abyss defeated Alex Shane in 2:26 by pinfall with The Black Hole. D-

Abyss dominated as expected, and we see a slight improvement in his match.

A video plays hyping America's Most Wanted vs. The Legion of Doom. D

Jay Lethal v Nigel McGuinness

Jay Lethal defeated Nigel McGuinness in 3:39 by pinfall. E+

The match suffered due to Lethal and McGuinness not clicking.

Tatanka and Chris Candido are in the ring, and are squaring off, unhappy about something. The argument soon turns physical, and they are joined by Ultimo Dragon and Frankie Kazarian for a wild brawl, with the chaos spilling out all around ringside. Eventually a number of officials and other wrestlers have to hit the ring and pull them apart before they kill each other. D-

Samoe Joe v Matt Striker

Samoa Joe defeated Matt Striker in 3:59 by submission. D

Joe was as dominant as Abyss earlier as he continues his return from injury.

Mysterio and Lynn attack Ken Shamrock backstage, and leave him down and out. C-. More main event set up, and a surprise move by Rey.

Caribbean Cool v Special K ('Special' Steve Corino & Kid Kash)

Caribbean Cool defeated Special K in 6:47 when Carlito defeated Kid Kash by pinfall with a Stunner. D

Carlito is celebrating in ring following his victory, when Steve Corino appears. He gives the signal, and Kid Kash, Chris Harris and James Storm beat the living crap out of Carlito. D

Legion of Doom v America's Most Wanted

America's Most Wanted defeated The Legion of Doom in 9:51 when James Storm defeated Road Warrior Hawk by pinfall with a Death Sentence. America's Most Wanted win the NWA TNA World Tag Team titles. C-

A pleasing match, especially when one considers how often these two teams have met of late.

CM Punk v Psicosis - cage match

CM Punk defeated Psicosis in 12:41 when CM Punk escaped the cage. E

Very disappointing, this was the worst match of the fued, so it's a good job this ends it!

A music video airs hyping the promotion, including shots of Ken Shamrock, AJ Styles, and Jeff Jarrett. C

NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Ken Shramrock v Rey Mysterio Jr v Jerry Lynn

New Year Nightmare

Sunday, week 1, January 2003

Trojan Arena, Troy, AL.

"It's all about the wrestling"

A pay per view with no build up, it's all about the action in the ring.

(Pre Show) Jimmy Yang defeated Frankie Kazarian in 9:55 by pinfall with a Corkscrew 450 Splash. D

The two worked well together, although Kazarian was off his game.

Doug Williams v Jay Lethal

Jay Lethal defeated Doug Williams in 7:36 by pinfall. D

These two are great in the ring together, although Lethal's performance was very disappointing. That may now hold his good run back now.

TNA LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP

Mickie James v Sara Del Ray

Mickie James defeated Sara Del Ray in 10:24 by pinfall with a Laree DDT. Mickie James makes defence number 14 of her TNA Ladies title. E+

I need to look at the women's division, as their ratings have drop significantly of late. James continues to show her in ring dominance and remains undefeated in TNA.

Sheik Abdul Bashir v Ultimo Dragon

Ultimo Dragon defeated Sheik Abdul Bashir in 11:47 by pinfall with an Asai DDT. C-

A decent match and the show is on an upswing. Bashir and Dragon worked excellently together.

Air Paris v Psicosis

Air Paris defeated Psicosis in 12:48 by pinfall with a Moonsault Press. C

A good match, especially as Psicosis was slowed by an injury.

Caribbean Cool & Legion of Doom v Special K & Cocky Connection

Caribbean Cool and The Legion of Doom defeated Special K and ****y Connection in 17:01 when Road Warrior Animal defeated Johnny Devine by pinfall with a Top Rope Powerslam. D+

Animal was tiring towards then end of the match.

NWA TNA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

America's Most Wanted v No Nonsense

America's Most Wanted defeated No Nonsense in 19:16 when Chris Harris defeated Samoa Joe by pinfall with a Death Sentence. America's Most Wanted make defence number 1 of their NWA TNA World Tag Team titles. C-

The crowd thought the match went on for too long, although I'm not so sure.

Chris Candido v Potter

Chris Candido defeated Potter in 15:31 by pinfall with a Top Rope Leg Drop. B-

Best match of the night so far... will anything top it?

TNA X DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP

AJ Styles v Shane Douglas

AJ Styles defeated Shane Douglas in 17:44 by pinfall with a Styles Clash. AJ Styles makes defence number 7 of his TNA X Division title. C

Styles on the up and up.

Jeff Jarrett v Rey Mysterio Jr

Jeff Jarrett defeated Rey Mysterio Jr. in 14:39 by pinfall with The Stroke. B-

A match to equal the Candido v Potter match. The main event is going to have to go some to top these two...

NWA TNA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

Ken Shramrock v Jerry Lynn - 30 minute ultimate submission match

Ken Shamrock defeated Jerry Lynn in 30:00 by two falls to one. Ken Shamrock makes defence number 6 of his NWA TNA World Heavyweight title. B

Wow, a match that lifted the entire crowd, and TNA's best match to round off it's best show to date. All with zero build up.

Show rating: B-

The show is considered a success and should boost TNA's popularity.

Attendance: 5000 (sell out)

Downside agreement is the minimum you must pay a worker for that month.

i.e.

$800 per appearance, $2000 downside would mean that if you only used Tenay twice, you'd be required to pay him for his two appearances ($800 each, equaling $1600, PLUS $400 to make up the difference). Of course, if you use him 3 times (or more) then you don't have to worry about that, since his PPA money would be greater than the downside. So it could best be explained as a Monthly Minimum Wage.

Not sure why you'd do an entire night of 0 build up matches (unless you'll recap some of them on TV and hopefully build towards something).

Two small gripes:

Every match had a clean finish (so the loser of the match doesn't have anything to fall back on, should you try and build).

And you should have kept at least Punk & Psicosis out (to sell the cage match -- especially Psicosis). And if you had to have Punk, then have him lose, still feeling the effects of the cage or something. Still want to see where things go long term, but those are comments on the show itself.

Thanks for that CQI. The downside will be redundant then, as he is my commentator, will be on $1000 per show (4 Impacts and one pay per view a month) and only have a $1500 per month downside.

I never even considered Punk and Psicosis selling their cage match, nor every match being a clean finish. I certainly will need to consider these sorts of things in future.

The reason it was a zero build up pay per view is that is the second pay per view in two weeks, and starts the building up to the February pay per view, Survivor. Rather ironic how it was rated my best show to date!

In other news, TNA has signed the following wrestlers.

Shame to see Dragon go, especially after winning his last two matches. Is he gone already, or does he still have a week left with you? If he's still there for a week, a worker getting a big win over him would be great. They could claim that they beat him so bad that they ran him out of the promotion.
