A New Era

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k235/Bigpapa42_2006/WWE/Logos/Banners/WWEBanner.jpg

If you have wrestling professional wrestling for any length of time, chances are that you watched the WWF/WWE at some point. Whether you tune in now as a regular viewer or

I am not so presumptious as to claim that this how the WWE "should" be run. Far from it. They seem to be doing pretty well in many ways, and I realize there are practical considerations - mainly financial ones - behind much of what they do at this point. But this is basically an exploration of what the WWE could be if they didn't have those practical considerations limiting them and a little gradual shot of old school booking ideals.

I want to keep the WWE feeling like the WWE. At the same time, I want to change some things. Its going to be a careful balance, and I don't want to change things too quickly. Much like Generation Supreme, the basic purpose of the project is to try to create a new generation of stars. The majority of those stars are already within the WWE. There will be some additions, but I hope to not make WWE into something that doesn't resemble the WWE anymore. Anyone brought in from outside the current WWE structure will be brought in for specific reasons. Just like "reality", look and entertainment skills will matter as much or more than actual in-ring skill.

There is going to be a "backstory" to this one, but its going to be a bit different in its approach. Its from a fan's perspective. "The Mark". Any backstage stuff that's brought up will be through "The Mark", and much like any fan reading rumors, the legitimacy of it will be questionable. While I will throw a bit of autobiographical bits into "The Mark" - such as the thoughts on historical stuff - it is mostly going to be a fictional character.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k235/Bigpapa42_2006/WWE/Logos/Banners/WWEBanner.jpg

So why the real world and the WWE?

Well, my year-long Supreme Wrestling Federation diary fed my love for the CornellVerse. There remain two CornellVerse promotions which really interest me to do a diary about - Total Championship Wrestling and Burning Hammer of the Wrestling Gods. I have ideas for both that I would like to explore at some point, but the timing doesn't feel right for either. To do either as I would like, it would require a fair amount of work in regard to match write-ups and that's just not something I want to commit to at this point.

An aspect of writing the CV that I always enjoyed was the fill-in-the-blank approach to the characters. Most of the characters give you an outline and some pieces, and its up to the writer to fill in the rest. I had some great fun and success with that with some character in my diary - notably Rich Money - and managed to leave a few others relatively blank (half the huge bloated roster, honestly). But doing a real world diary is pretty much the opposite - you have to mold you approach to what is already, for the most part, established. That actually appeals.

Since I first discovered TEW just before TEW2008 was released, it did a curious thing - it rekindled my interest in wrestling. It helped expand it, as I've become a fan of Japanese wrestling as well.

Part of the reason I wanted to do a WWE game is simply to put my money where my mouth is. As I watch, I often find myself thinking the typical "this is what I would do".

Another part was a desire to deal one of the most interesting aspects of doing a real world diary - the already-established characters. This aspect is one of the advantages and disadvantages of any real world diary, to me. Its an advantage in that most notable workers have established characters and personalities that a writer can use and build off of. You are not starting from scratch, for the most part. At the same time, it's a disadvantage because it puts expectations in the minds of the readers. Most readers know how a Stone Cold, Vince, or Cena sound, so if you don't capture it, it doesn't feel "real". This is especially tough when writing out promos. So I'm taking advantage of this factor and minimizing the disadvantage by going with a "recap" style for promos and matches.

This is probably going to look and feel fairly similar to my Generation Supreme diary. The booking style will be similar, but I will try to avoid some of the pitfalls I managed to hit with that one. I'll start with a graphic layout for the shows similar to what I used for Gen-S, though I may scale that back over time to something more simple. As a whole, a buzzword for this diary is going to be "streamlined". Don't look for major match write-ups for most shows, outside of the pay per views. I want something that is going to be fairly relaxed to write out a show. I still make no promises of how long this thing will run. I've set a likely-unmatchable standard for myself with my previous work, so I doubt this will live up to it in most ways. Be warned.

So what does this mean for Generation Supreme? Pretty much nothing right now. Gen-S is on hiatus. If this goes well, I guess it could seal the fate of that project. But if this project is as laid-back and streamlined as I intend, then it could be possible to both at once.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k235/Bigpapa42_2006/WWE/Logos/Banners/WWEBanner.jpg

Although I toyed with the idea of doing this project on EWR 4.2 for various reasons, I am running the game on TEW 2008. The data I am using is based on Futurelegend112's New Power Rising, but "Franenstein'd". It been adjusted, added to, and everything else. It probably wasn't necessary, but that's the problem I always run into on real world mods. It plays quite nicely, but I am finding workers jumping in overness quite quickly in the first month. My guess is that it will make for fairly easy good grades. It it becomes overt, I'll probably simply stop posting the show grades. I know some readers don't like that, but I prefer to have the focus on the storylines rather than the grades the game gives... That was part of the reason I almost did this on EWR.

Much like the front page on my Gen-S diary, the idea is to keep this one updated with all the roster, brand splits, etc. It is currently a work-in-progress - obviously the "Other Promotions" section is not yet correct.

Woo!!! First post! In any case, have you "fixed" some of the stat inflations (and in rare cases, deflations)? Sometimes, even in TEW2008, it's too damn easy to get A* shows.

The mod I checked had the Rock's Performance stats higher than Lance Storm's. That's just wack. And the Rock had a B- in Puroresu. WTF?

Also, Lance Storm had a B- in Entertainment. I don't know why, but Lance Storm was never a B- in Entertainment.

I as waiting to see if it was ok to post

but IMO Lance Storm was a B- before

also I like the look of this and never read Generation Supreme (mostly because it was soooo long when I joined GDS) but I've skimmed it and I like this so far. The only thing I noticed bad is that you had ROH and PWG at #3

also did you have the old IC title there on purpose? I like that more :D

I'm a Lance Storm Fan, but there's no way he's a B- in Entertainment. First off, it would mean he was pretty good at the mic. He was okay, but wasn't great. I would give a C- to C+. Second, his charisma never really shines on TV. I would give it around a D+ to C-. As for his Acting... he's not a good one. Around D- to D+.

I'm looking forward to this. I didn't get into Generation Supreme, because it was already REALLY long when I started reading '08 dynasties. I'm on board here.

I like the open admission that it's a lot easier to play armchair quarterback, and computer game jockey, than to actually book this stuff in reality. A nice dose of humble pie is always a good thing.

Cheers!

Whoa, that's a lot of responses right off the bat. Thanks guys...

I tried to have things basically reflect how the CV is set up, and yet try to stay realistic at the same time. I though the mod was pretty good on Performance skills, but a bit low on Psychology for some. There are still some guys who have inflated stats, or could be tweaked further, but I basically gave up on it after awhile. There is always going to be subjectivity when it comes to ratings in RW game or mod, and I decided not to bother focusing on that aspect after awhile.

Yeah, just wanted to get the main page posts up before anyone posted anything. Thanks for waiting.

The other promotions post is off right now, because I started putting it together based on the EWR game. I will be adjusted to reflect what the TEW game has soon enough.

As for the IC title, yeah, its intentional. But not the way one might think. I prefer Reaper's renders to any of the title cuts I could find, so I used the renders I could find. The ones he's done are for the older WWF titles, so I made do. I have considered making a request of Reaper to render and/or redo the WWE belts, but that's a huge ask and I wanted to wait to make sure this thing gets rolling first.

Awesome.

Thanks, Fin. Glad to have your support on this one, too.

*Starts up a chant* This is awesome! *clap, clap, clapclapclap* This is awesome! *clap, clap, clapclapclap* This is awesome! *clap, clap, clapclapclap*

I'm hoping it turns out awesome, but time will tell. Thanks.

I'm looking forward to this. I got left behind with Gen-Supreme, so hopefully I can keep up with this. Push Sheamus! (and if you could give him his indy ring name of O'Sheanasse(sp?) (SOS), I'd mark out :p)

Sheamus is a guy I have hopes for. Definitely.

And I think the "getting left behind" thing is a problem with any project that gets big and lengthy. Think I might try an approach in this one which could help in that regard.

Cheers!

Good to have you.

Yeah, I'm going to end up doing some things which I know would not happen in reality, for various reasons. The real WWE has to have practical business considerations in mind, so they do need to keep merchandise sales in mind when they go to turn someone heel, for example. You don't need to do that in a game. I will try to respect some of those considerations, but I won't completely limit myself by them either.

Thanks for all the responses already, folks. Great to see this thing already has a following, well before it even deserves one. Might be a little bit yet before I get the first show posted. This one is intended to be more relaxed than Gen-S was, so I'm intending to take my time with things.

Wow, I really did not expect this to come up this fast...Gen-S didn't even get through it's first week of hiatus, before this comes up! :p

Well, in any case, you know I'll be following. I'll be curious to see if getting predictions right will be as easy as it was for Gen S. ;) Cause, you know, another differance between RW and CV that I think I've found, is that I seem to be more likely to push a lower carder up the rankings in real world mods then in the C-Verse. Take, say, Freddy Huggins for example - I know he's talented, and he has fine potential, but I somehow doubt I'll be pushing him much throughout the year, even if I know he could do well with enough momentum. On the other hand, put a guy like say, Brian Kendrick in the same position as him, and I'd probably be all for pushing up the card..or, atleast, I would, if it wasn't CONSTANTLY being suspended and fined for drugs in my games... :p By chance, do you find yourself in the same situation, being more likely to push an up-and-comer you've watched on TV, then you are with one in C-Verse?

Yeah, I didn't intend to jump in so quickly. But I ended up starting the front pages on another site (hence the main logo, which has "Be the Booker" on it), with the idea to do it on EWR, but decided to do the same project on both sites. Figured there wasn't any harm in starting it up and building a bit of hype before the first show.

I think its easier to come into a RW with set ideas of who should be what. Based on a skillset and bio, would most people look at John Morrison a likely world champion? But when you've seen what he can do in real life and how the fans take to him, suddenly it becomes far easier. At the same time, I think I'm more likely to "fight" against an unplanned worker getting over. In the CV, I rolled with it - Pistol Pete Hall being an example in my Gen-S. But if someone I didn't really plan to push had a high destiny in this game and started to get over - let's say Goldust - I would be less likely to just adapt my plans to it.

Nice Banner ;)

Great to see you start the dynasty up, I've been waiting to see what you'd do with the WWE, as it seems like we're going in different orders :p

Thanks. I'm definitely looking forward to your SWF diary when you finally get it going.

Not the biggest fan of real world mods, but I'll be definitely following this one closely. :)

Good to have you, FI.

I think my previous project is going to bring in some readers who normally stick to CV work. If I can hook them with this project, I'm hoping it might get them looking at some of the awesome RW diaries here.

The Mark

Volume 1

September 2009

They say it was epic.

They say it was an all-timer.

Of course, "they" say a lot of things.

It never has been and never likely will be confirmed. But there is simply something too deliciously fun about the image of the first-family of professional wrestling having an all-out brawl like a pure white trash brood. Of course, the simple fact that it is so amusing makes it unlikely to be true. It is most likely the delirious invention of some keyboard warrior... like myself...

I have been a fan of professional wrestling for more than 30 years now. I have not followed consistently through that entire period, as there have been stretches where I barely followed. And I was honestly little more than an inattentive kid in those early years. Like so many others, I can thank my father for breeding a love of wrestling into me. I can thank him for that, much as I can thank him for my receding hairline.

The one constant through all those years was the WWF/WWE. I have watched plenty of other promotions, but the E was always there as my first choice. As young as I was, I remember when Backlund lost the belt to The Iron Sheik. I was a Hulkamaniac. When I left and came back, it was always coming back to the vision of Vince McMahon. When other promotions, big or small, caught my eye and drew my attention, it was always just a temporary thing.

Through the first half of 2009, I found my attention waning again. The product just appealed to me less and less. The PG era, so maligned by Internet fans, was the cause. It was not the lack of naughty language nor the taming of the Divas. It was the short title reigns, the lack of blood, the simplification of characters and storylines. Simply put, the WWE product was no longer aimed at me. They were worried about hooking the 8 year old kid that lives down the block, not me. I put up with it for awhile, but it started to wear on me. I gradually realized I was spending more effort complaining over what I disliked about the product instead of enjoying any of it.

By mid-year, I would have bet that this mark would no longer be watching the WWE by the end of 2009. Whether it was another temporary absence or the end of an era in my life, it seemed unavoidable. Then something happened... The heel turn of CM Punk.

The turn itself was the dream of every mark – this Mark included. It was more than Punk turning heel – it was him doing so in a very well-booked turn. Not a Hogan-level epic heel turn, but the kind of good and drawn-out booking that I ceased to expect from the WWE anymore.

That was not the only “good” thing happening in all of the three brands at that point, but it stuck out. There was also the tag team division getting some attention, with Chris Jericho and Big Show as champions. The return of D-X did little for me, but they put on a really good match with Legacy at SummerSlam, with Triple H and Michaels making Rhodes and DiBiase look really good. At Breaking Point, Legacy actually went over the veterans. What was going on?

I liked where things were going again. Not that everything was suddenly perfect – Raw still felt like a mess, with the guest host thing annoying me endlessly. At least I was doing more enjoying and less complaining.

So what does all of this have to do with a likely-fictional argument of the McMahon family?

Well, the rumor about the fight said it was everyone – Shane, Stephanie, Linda, Paul, and even Shane's wife – against Vince. The topic was simple – the degree of control that Vince still maintained over everything in World Wrestling Entertainment. They all wanted him to cede some control. Especially on the creative side. The beneficiaries of that would be Stephanie and Paul – aka Triple H And possibly the fans...?

That is the worst nightmare of most marks – Triple H with more power.

Did the fight really happen? Is the upturn related to Stephanie and Triple H having more creative power? The rumor popped up at the start of the summer, so the timing would actually coincide with things making a turn for the better, too.

Maybe Triple H running World Wrestling Entertainment wouldn't be the worst thing...?
