Yes, Cena has been the "funny guy" at times, but he was still built like a video game character and was never portrayed as goofy or cowardly in the ring. Santino's a small comedy wrestler that's over as an underdog. How quickly do you think fans would cool on his shtick if he actually won a world title? It would make Rey Mysterio's title reign look like one for the ages. How is he still a comedy underdog if he's champion?

You have the new GM outraged. Outraged that someone the likes of this clown managed to somehow sneak himself into being World/WWE Champion. Santino continues to be Santino in the ring, all the while BARELY escaping with the title as he GM throws everything he/she can at them.

Slowly but surely people begin to realize Santino's not as dumb as he is funny, and his wrestling style's to his benefit instead of his detriment. How do you adapt to wrestling someone like Santino? You underestimate him, not realizing the talent he actually has. Eventually, he'd be taken serious by the competition and the GM, and Santino crosses the line to becoming both serious and goofy in the ring, at the same time.

It's doable. You just gotta work for it.

Edit: To further comment, I could see this going for a 5-6 month run or so before someone finally beats him. A Jericho type heel, solid in the ring, capable of holding a good, fun match with Santino. Santino becomes your lower tier main eventer. Not feuding over the US title anymore, but not winning the big one. He can challenge for it and even feud over it, and be believable in a chance at winning it for a second time, but his main role becomes elevating a heel from the mid card to his level so they can break into the main event. This also gives your current heels someone to work solid matches with and get wins over, that won't hurt them, but isn't just some jobber.

It would be like Hurricane winning. They could get away with it since these workers are talented in the ring and comfortable speaking and acting on camera.

It's not like you're giving Funaki or Spike Dudley the title. Big difference.

Not that I would go through with it though. I think there are better options on the roster at the moment.

How is he still a comedy underdog if he's champion?

He doesn't have to be a strong champion.

Good lord, people are actually arguing for a Santino run at the World title and even thinking he should win it or be considered to win it.

Santino is an undercard comedy figure. People popped big for his being the last man against Bryan in the Chamber because it was a novelty, a cult undercard act actually hanging on until the end. Remember when Triple H had that famous Raw match with Taka Michonoku back in 2000, where he had the entire building thinking that Taka had a real chance of beating him for the WWF title? That's what was happening with Santino; people got caught up in the notion that this undercard guy might actually pull off the huge upset.

If Santino had won then, you'd have the same people thinking Santino should get a run at the title convinced that Santino winning was a great idea because the fans were going crazy for it at that moment. But guess what? After the PPV is over and the pop has died out, you've got to go on TV with Santino as your world champion. And you might have gotten the initial pop out of people from seeing Santino wearing the big gold belt, but then reality would have set in and you'd realize an undercard comedy geek is your world champion.

Seriously, the next time you get caught up in the pops an undercard comedy geek is getting, take a step back and just think for a minute and try and put that reaction into perspective. A pop for an undercard geek is not the same as a pop for a main event talent.

And I'm not even touching the completely retarded comparison of John Cena to Santino.

You'd think the Zach Ryder US title reign or the current Santino reign would be enough of a clue that you can't really be a comedy champion without making your challengers look bad. It's Carlito running into a wall in miniature; how can a fan take a heel seriously when the heel can't even beat up a comedy act? How do you sell Bugs Bunny-style outwitting and a deliberately weak babyface champion without changing the fundamentals of wrestling entirely (or just having ratings nose-dive)?

Not to disparage Santino in particular or comedy wrestling in general, but it has its place, and that's not in the main event. It gets a big pop because seeing Santino as a potential fluke royal rumble champion is fun for the crowd the same way it was fun the first time Mysterio wrestled a big guy in WCW. But once the novelty wears off, what's left isn't particularly viable.

Eh, Miz and Daniel Bryan come to mind when people talk about wrestlers who they believe have absolutely no chance at being a World Champion.

It just takes some effort as one of the other posters said earlier.

It's not really about whether Santino could be World Champion in my eyes, it's the fact one minute has was so close, then next, nothing. Jobbing in seconds to Bryan the next night, rarely being in a serious match since, apart from his very brief programme with Swagger. The guy had momentum, and at the very least seemed a legitimate World Championship contender... although admittedly not at Wrestlemania, which was the next ppv.

However, what harm has it done Santino? Given that he's currently more popular than he was in January, none. He serves his purpose, he gets a pop, sells merchandise, and is good relief on a 3 hour show. And if he ever does get close again he has form, and it begins to look less flukey.

The ahem may actually be to the US Title. Santino has had a handful of good defences. Swagger had none. Ryder had a couple. And that's half a years history of a top title...

Anyway, tonight:

Sheamus

Bryan

Jericho

Rhodes

Layla

Goldberg... Er, Ryback

Okay, two of those don't have matches last I looked, but I'm sure they will.

Trying to avoid spoilers, so not reading anything during the time of the event yet.

Feel the need to say Sin Cara NEEDS to be fired for his actions tonight. Period. If he still has a job after what he did, I'll refuse to watch anything he's involved in.

You must really hate television wrestling. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Granted on a PPV that isn't expected. As I seem to be on my own on this one, maybe I wasn't paying attention.

How boring was that match? I think people cheered just because it was over. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />
