I mean, half of Smallville apparantly knew of his powers already due to some slip-ups when he was a kid - and for the rest of the movie, he does nothing but expose his powers to people who knew who he was... who determines that the world is ready now? How does he know without just taking a chance and risk it? And why was his own father not worth that risk when some random sailors he doesn't know all that well are? And the tacky ending, where an undercover Superman as Clark Kent gets a job at The Daily Planet... I mean, good job using "Clark Kent" as your secret identity when an investigative trip to Smallville could find dozens of people knowing what you can do... and how does someone with zero qualifications land such a high profile job nowadays?

Apart from that, I didn't quite feel the Lois Lane/Superman chemistry in the same way as in the old, campy movies. But it was a beautiful movie filled with spectacular and intensive action, I'll give it that.

I loved the Krypton stuff. Russell Crowe; Action Scientist. Just being a bad ass in a wacky alien world. Dug it.

The rest of the movie didn't do it for me. The film skipped forward and back in time so much, I felt we never got to know Superman. Never got in his head. We were looking at snapshots, not a cohesive story.

Problem with the stuff on Krypton and how the movie broke it's own rules:

Spoiler:

Jor-El was a bred scientist right? Like from birth. And Zod and his crew wore born soldiers, right? That was the whole point of what Jor El was trying to fight against, the conservative ideals of Kryptonian government basically breeding people into their entire lives. Kyrptonians have no control or choice over their chosen paths. They are decided at birth. As his planet falls in part due to it's own arrogance, Jor-El wishes for Kal-El to not be bound by this system, to go to earth so that he may find his own way, right?

So why was the by-birth egghead Jor-El just jackie channing through every single member of Zod's army on Krypton when he was trying to to his rocket?? Not a single one of them even remotely put up a fight against him! He just dispatched them with ease! This would be the equivalent of Niel Degrasse Tyson just mowing through the UFC middleweight division on his way to a goal. These are Krypton's ELITE fighting force that took siege of the government in am extremely short elapsed time. And not ONE of them was a serious threat to Jor-El in open combat??? Sorry, no. Not buying it.

Sure, maybe he's been "bucking the system" and training a bit, but he surely should have nothing on a lifetime soldier, let alone the elite ones. I'd have understood it if Jor-El outsmarted Zod and his crew but he didn't. At ALL. He just fought his way through them one by one and by sheer physical force pushed his way to the rocket and got his kid and the codex off of Krypton. He ultimately died in the process but not through a lack of fighting skill, but because Zod was in a murderous rage. Made zero sense and broke the movie's own rules right there in the beginning. Poor writing. Took me right out of the movie.

I can buy that the sun can make an alien fly around earth and be invincible. Hell I'll even buy that in the age of background checks that the alias Clark Kent can be used in a high profile job as his feats of heroism can be written off as exaggerated legend. And I can buy that a stupid pair of glasses is enough to throw off his friends of who he really is. It's suspension of disbelief. The movie establishes rules and as long as they follow rules I won't bat an eyelash at the unrealistic stuff.

I CAN'T get past stuff like that crap with Jor-El. When it's the primary driving force behind the main character origin and you crap all over it like that because why? I heard rumors that Crowe signed and bitched about rewrites on-set that he wanted fight scenes. I don't know if it's true (I doubt it... he's a pro and would understand the charcter I'd think as long as it was explained to him properly) but it would explain how an otherwise tight movie craps all over itself in essentially on sequence. Maybe they thought they needed a fight scene because the next 40 minutes were about to be super boring? I don't know. Either way the movie crapped on itself bigtime for no real reason in that scene and took me right out of it.

The father Kent thing: The thing that baffled me most is that he's actually going back to save the damn dog. I mean: wtf? But thinking about it made me realize that saving that damned dog before the eyes of Kent is probably one of the factors that got him to care about the humans. Sure, he looks human enough, but it was crystal clear that Klingon's were vastly different in a way. Saving those people at the end, and the earth in general, while being mistrusted by them at first, was kinda like Mr. Kent saving that dog. But the exposure was also much grander. There was the childhood 'mishap', but people (children even) tend to attribute that one thing as a miracle (as you could see in the movie), whereas it happening multiple times, in front of 50+ (adult!) people - given the number of cars - leads to him being incarcerated/excluded from society. I'm pretty sure he would've been 'caught' right there, which would've ultimately doomed mankind, given the context of the movie.

As for Kal-El 'owning' in fights: I didn't quite see it like that. It's true you would expect him to lose, but come on... The message is supposed to be that choice of action backed by heart/love is stronger than inscribed/programmed will. It's symbolic. To be frank: movies like that are always symbolic. It's frickin' superhero movies. Who cares? It's like those endless, pointless discussions on intra-superhero power levels (who would kick who's ass in a fight: batman or deathstroke?, etc). Pointless.

However, a movie should bring an internally consistent narrative, that much is true. I explained why I believed it in this post.

I suspend disbelief normally except when I notice bad writing. And I am not sitting here saying that no one should enjoy it. I can tell you it took ME out of the movie. I'm sorry, under no circumstances should that stuff have occurred. There's ways to create an action sequence within the rules they set up for themselves. They chose instead to go "ehh screw it you're all morons anyway." Took me right out of it.

Star Trek: Into Darkness had too much of this as well. Upon a second viewing I noticed it even more than I did the first time.

Captain America 2 is awesome. Not as much joking around as Avengers and Iron Man but it's probably the best pure action movie of the marvel line thus far. Tons of hand to hand combat, some really great fight sequences. Cap and Winter Soldier have just enough superpowers to do new and creative things but not so much that it was like fantasy action. much more brutal and real than we've seen from the Marvel stuff thus far. I really enjoyed it.

I like some jokes. The kebab-snippet at the end of the credits of Avengers had me rofl for about half an hour. I do get people getting upset because they were talking about food during the 'final battle', which is of course... completely ridiculous. Then again, the true superhero movies are always ridiculous. :p That's why I prefer Batman: it has a cloak of realism.

Yea there's a giggle or two to be had during Captain America 2 but it's definitely not the jovial yarn that other Marvel films have been. This is much more of a hardcore action film without blood and guts. I mean there is some dramatic moments here and there but the core of the story is generally told through suspenseful action sequences. Cap's not a jocular character he takes this "fighting for the fate of humanity" stuff kinda seriously. In an era lacking in original action films it was a welcome change of pace.

That's not to say no action movies come out anymore. There's quite a few. But they're (generally speaking of course...I'm aware there's exceptions...) either "Taken" rip offs or they are nostalgic throwbacks ala The Last Stand, Expendables, Escape Plan, Bullet to the head, etc. This era of action film has had a bit of an identity crisis. Captain America didn't feel like a rip off. It felt fresh and exciting. And for such a lengthy picture to move so quickly... I really can't say enough nice things about it. Go see it.

I think it's nice to see that there's a middle way between the goofy jokes of Avengers and Iron Man on one side and the dark and serious tone of The Dark Knight on the other side. Cap 2 was serious, without being overly so. I liked that.

I keep on seeing commercials for Oculus and it looks like it could be either really good or just terrible (With the WWE being behind it, I would bet that it will probably be a stinker.). Anyway, I have to say Karen Gillan cannot pull off a decent sounding American accent. She sounds terrible in those commercials. There is too much of her real accent seeping in and while I love her natural voice I can't stand her "American" voice.

I was reading a review of Rio 2 and decided to watch some of the music on youtube. For some reason I'm in love with Gabi the frog and her voice. It's just perfect. I'm not the type of guy who pay attention over cute stuff but that hit me strong.

Does anyone here us Trakt.tv to keep track of movies that they have watched for their respective home theatre devices? I've just started using it and was wondering if there was a way to add entire collections / lists to your watched list without having to click watched on each movie? Anyone know?

 • 2 weeks later...

Well there's one super hero we know the Rock is not playing. Ray Fisher has officially been cast as Victor Stone/Cyborg. Apparently he's more known for theater, not film. I've never seen anything he's done, but he at least looks the part.

I'm still holding out hope that the character the Rock signed on to play is Black Adam.

Apparently Jason Momoa is also signed on, but no character has been announced. A lot of people think he's playing Aquaman. I'd be ok with that, even if I imagine they'd have him keep his hair brunette instead of dying it blonde.

Plus I think The Rock would overshadow the character meaning instead of it being Cyborg in the movie it be The Rock as Cyborg.
