I find it bemusing that movie studios often consider a movie to be a failure if it doesn't gross spectacularly domestically - even though it may have huge success abroad. Like Pacific Rim, for instance.

Dredd was the same way, but it's already developed a cult following that's pushing heavily for a sequel. I went and saw Dredd twice in theaters. I know my $10 each time didn't go far, but at least I contributed :p

Speaking of Dredd. A few months back, my roommate and I watched The Road with Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee. We felt so emotionally crushed and just drained after watching it that we had to put Dredd on just to watch mindless violence.

Though that is becoming less true every year. I wish I could find this article I read late last year that talked about how the trend is moving away from US domestic being the big measuring stick of a movies success. It than looked at how that trend not just affecting what is determined a successful movie release but also the types of movies that are being made. It had a large focus on how Asian movie market trends are becoming almost as big of a factor as the US market.

Also speaking of the foreign markets, I am still shocked a movie about Captain America has made over 450 million outside of the United States.

Oh and yeah Days of Future Past was awesome and is easily the best X-Men movie.

<p>Yeah, the Road novel is pretty disturbing, but it's still in some ways less grisly than the movie, because it's more brutal to actually see this stuff than to read it described in a way that isn't focused on cataloging the brutality. The man goes out of his way to hide that there are cannibals around from his son, whereas in the movie it's pretty hard to miss.</p><p> </p><p>

It's a great book, and somehow not McCarthy's bleakest or most mind-bending.</p>

Just watch the "Everything Wrong With..." series on the LOTR. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

He feels like an actual character and has some agency (he actually solves a lot of problems, instead of just being rescued 100% of the time), whereas in the movie it's all just Elijah Wood being pale and having big eyes. I especially like the ending of RotK where the hobbits return home and Merry and Pippin are seen as big heroes by the locals because they've literally grown bigger than everyone and have served the kings of Rohan and Gondor so they've got cool armor and weapons, while Frodo becomes an under-appreciated recluse who has magical PTSD and can't go back to his old life.</p><p> </p><p> I don't enjoy any choice Jackson made that lengthened the story- the "is Aragorn dead?" scene in Two Towers, the whole subplot with Arwen, basically everything he did with the Faramir character, the over-reliance on CGI in the third film... still, compared to the mess that is the Hobbit trilogy, they were pretty great.</p>

<p>Saw Days of Future Past today. Liked it a lot, it was a great flick and most certainly around the same level as X2, but I still had some issues with it:</p><p> </p><p>

1. Major continuity issues. <span style="color:#FFFFFF;">While it was great to see them correct the huge errors of X3 in the end, they sadly followed the trend of First Class with too much that didn't fit with the first movies, most notably (but not exclusive to) the first Wolverine movie. And while I agree that it was a bad movie that itself messed around with continuity a bit, completely ignoring it (after The Wolverine from last year achnowledged it) seemed harsh... my very biggest problem being that when Wolverine travels back in time and finds himself in New York, he's supposed to be at war in Vietnam! Oh, and there's of course the issue with Bolivar Trask being a non-dwarf black middle aged man in X3...</span></p><p> </p><p>

2. Events unfolding between First Class and DoFP. <span style="color:#FFFFFF;">Nothing at all happened with mutants in 10 years?? Oh, except of course </span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><em>several major characters being killed off off-screen for no good reason at all</em></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;">. Especially Emma Frost and Banshee being offed bugs me, with the latter even causing continuity issues - since his </span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"><strong>daughter</strong></span><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"> was in X2!</span></p><p> </p><p>

3. Too many characters. <span style="color:#FFFFFF;">A problem several of the movies has suffered from, with X3 and the first Wolverine being the worst offenders. But why was the scene with Havok and the other mutants in Vietnam included at all? Why was Quicksilver in the movie, if not just to mess with Marvel's Avengers plans? Since his relationship with Magneto was only briefly hinted at, his presence didn't really seem needed. I'd rather have had more screen time for the future mutants, Blink especially. Love me some Blink.</span></p><p> </p><p>

But an intense movie where the stakes seemed that much higher than in the other movies of the series. Solid action scenes, with especially the ones from the future blowing me away. I can't wait to get it on bluray, hopefully in an extended cut with the many cut scenes re-inserted, and it will be interesting to see where they go from here.</p>

<p>Godzilla thoughts ((SPOLIERS)):</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#FFFFFF;">It was one long tease to a relatively short John Cena match. </span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;">

"Oh no, King! Godzilla getting stomped by the two monsters! How's he going to get out of this one??!?"</span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;">

"Godzilla kicks out at two!!!" </span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;">

"Godzilla hits the Attitude Adjustment! Vintage godzilla! 1...2...3!!!!!"</span></p><p> </p><p>

Non spoiler thoughts:</p><p>

It was a pretty slow movie with lots of problems but still enjoyable at the end. I won't be running out to see it twice or anything though.</p>

The phrase "Never let the truth get in the way of a good story" doesn't quite apply, but it's close enough. Prof X being alive, and the re-shuffling of Wolverine's backstory, are valid points (although I'd forgotten both, so didn't bother me while watching) but I'm STUNNED people are complaining about Trask. He was a non-character in X3. I guess you could have renamed him, but comic fans would probably complain about that too</span></p><p> </p><p> 2. <span style="color:#FFFFFF;"> Banshee was at least 16 in First Class, so he was probably early 20's when killed. Perfectly natural age to knock someone up. Not that it was ever stated she was his kid. Just another non-character with similar powers. If anything, it's an indictment of comic book movies going for cheap pops by throwing in all of these fan service nods (Hank McCoy on a TV in X2 is another example) when there's a good chance they're going to rewrite/recast these characters in the future.</span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"> I do agree that 10 years is a long time for so little to have happened. Seems like they only chose that time to have the JFK thing in it. Which was a cute footnote, nothing more. </span></p><p> </p><p> 3. <span style="color:#FFFFFF;"> Havok & Co was pointless, but Quicksilver was awesome. Fun. Sure, you could have had another character do the same thing, but would it have really been 'better'?</span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"> </span></p><p><span style="color:#FFFFFF;"> I liked the movie. 5 out of 7 thumbs up. Beast still looks ridiculous (although the new prosthetics gave Hoult room to act this time) Mystique came off a little wooden and flat to me, and it never quite got me 100% emotionally engaged with things.</span></p><p> </p><p> Having watched most of the X-Men films within the past couple of months, I just want to see more mutants opening doors with their powers. I think it's X3 where Magneto turns a doorknob with him, and I found it delightful.</p>

Earlier today I realized that the first two Mighty Ducks movies were on Netflix. So I did what anyone from my generation would do, I watched both of them back to back. Twenty years later and I still have so much fun watching them. Strangely, I'm following up this double feature with a Hatchet 2 and Hatchet 3 double feature.

Never watched any of the movies, really should change that. I am extremely nostalgic about the 100% unrelated cartoon. Stupid fun doesn't even begin to describe that series. Plus it had Tim Curry AND Tony Jay! How can you not crack a smile at listening to those two try to out-ham each other?

I LOVE THAT CARTOON! I was/am pretty much a sucker for anthromorphic super heroes though...especially of the duck variety. Darkwing Duck is still regular viewing for this guy.

I had no idea the critics hated the Mighty Duck movies. They have super low scores on Rotten Tomatoes. I love them though. Twenty years later and I still want a Charlie Conway jersey...

Was an awesome movie.

To be honest, I was a bit dissapointed - given the amount of hype it has received. Was it fun and entertaining? Sure, sure. And Chris Pratt was charismatic and charming as hell to watch in that role. But ultimately, it felt a bit flat to me; the villain was lackluster, too many characters had no real purpose and merely served to set up future installments and waaay too many of the "funny" lines (especially from Raccoon) where... well, unfunny.

That said, it was still a good and fun movie. I probably just had too many expectations for it, after all the hype. And unlike Marvel's other movies, I knew nearly none of these characters beforehand, which, I guess, meant that I was less engaged in them.

But I'll repeat: Chriss Pratt, the guy owned the role. He has a big future.

I really enjoyed Guardians, I thought it was very good though not an all time classic or anything of the sort.

Pratt and Batista killed it though I can't help but feel the movie would have only benefitted from an extra 5-10 more minutes because some people who ended up having pretty big roles near the end didn't really get established much if at all. Nebula specifically wouldn't have been much of a problem to me if (spoilers in white) she didnt come back when Drax instakilled her. But the long, extended fight with her sister was always a foregone conclusion and they should have made her mean more than she had to that point, especially the part where she refuses help after being beaten and about to fall to her death

Fun movie, but yeah, I'm hearing all of these reports that it's amazing and truly special, and I don't quite see that. Probably my second favorite Marvel movie though. Took me a while to warm to Batista's performance. Very stilted, but once I realised that was the point, I dug it.
