Just finished Raya and the Last Dragon and boy oh boy it exceeded my lofty expectations. The world/lore is so fascinating and reminded me of a Square Enix JRPG world and also reminded me of the universe of Avatar The Last Airbender. The voice cast is stellar as well.

I hope we get a sequel or even a series exploring a romantic relationship between Raya and Namaari like Kelly Marie Tran wants. The seeds were certainly planted for that.

Just finished Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I really enjoyed it. Leo and Pitt were great and Margot as Sharon Tate was delightful. The Bruce Lee stuff was a little lame, but I did read Pitt convinced Tarantino to have them draw.

I'm a huge spaghetti western fan, so Leo's line about no one liking spaghetti westerns cracked me up. Especially since they made Eastwood into a superstar.

I've been marathoning all the Bond movies (just finished the Brosnan era) and I have to say that Sean Connery is vastly overrated. He's charismatic for sure, but his IRL attitude towards women bleeds through into his performance (also not helped by the writing) to an unsettling degree that gets worse from Goldfinger onwards. It actually reminds me a lot of Klaus Kinski's legit instability behind the scenes making his performances that much scarier (Aguirre, Wrath of God is one of the greatest films ever), except with Bond you're getting that from the hero!

On the other side, George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton are beyond underrated. Lazenby gives the most heartfelt, humanized interpretation of Bond and it's a damn shame his agent convinced him to stop after the one movie. Dalton is like a dry run for what they would later do with Daniel Craig, he's a government assassin with a personal code he abides by and an awesome death glare. Licence to Kill in particular is a great watch.

At this point we might as well call them Eastwood westerns since nearly all of the classics star him anyways. Even the ones he directed like High Plains Drifter and Unforgiven feel very Italian.

Just finished the most recent Hellboy movie and I think a lot of the detractors only complained because Del Toro a d Perlman weren't involved. I think it might be my favorite of the three existing live action Hellboy movies. It was super fun, gory as heck, and had an interesting storyline.

My only complaint is more aimed at Hellboy in general than the movie, but Nimue as a villain doesn't track with me. In most King Arthur mythos, Nimue is usually the Lady of the Lake. As in the character that gives Arthur Excalibur.

<p>Nimue being the villain does track with Hellboy's general theme of good and evil not always coming in the form we expect. I mean, this is a series where the antichrist is the hero. I believe the comics also had a better explanation where Nimue was driven to madness and turned into an embodiment of The Morrigan, a much more violent goddess from Irish mythology.</p><p> </p><p>

Speaking of Nimue, Milla Jovovich was what convinced me to skip Hellboy. I have never enjoyed her performance in anything. Even in good movies like Fifth Element she's the worst part of it. There's a million better actresses out there deserving of a break and the queen of never trying is <em>still</em> getting the part instead.</p>

<p>Yeah I'm far from a Milla fan, but she was fine in Hellboy. Despite being the big bad, she's not featured nearly as much as she could have been.</p><p> </p><p>

Just watched Pitch Black for the first time since I was like 13. Holds up real well and it's obvious why Vin Diesel's star rose a ton after it. Off the next couple days so probably gonna knock out Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick at some point.</p>

<p>There's actually a fourth Riddick in the works and a series called Merc City! </p><p> </p><p>

Anytime i have seen Vin talk about Riddick he gushes like a proud parent, so I don't think it's a case of him intentionally ignoring it for F&F. F&F just makes so so so so much money. Like it's insane how much money they make. Clearly people want them. The franchise has made over $6billion.</p><p> </p><p>

He's also done more Riddick movies than xXx <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

If I remember right, and I could totally be talking out of my ass here. I recall an article that came out years ago talking about how Vin considers the Pitch Black series to be his baby. They were the ones he was most proud of (Which I would agree with that, I really liked the Riddick movies. Though the best movie he was in was Saving Private Ryan but that was not "his" movie.).

Now for the part that I don't know if this is true or not, but I thought I read it years ago. I am pretty sure I read that the only reason why he returned to the F&F franchise was if The Chronicles of Riddick was made. Universal did distribute both films but nothing I have read since seems to jive with what I just wrote. That is I am not sure if what I said is true or not.

What is my point? I don't know. Possibly I was wondering if anyone had heard the same thing I had about him not wanting to do F&F sequels unless Riddick got funded.

What I read was they wanted Diesel to do a cameo or take part in Tokyo Drift and instead of taking pay, he wanted rights to the Riddick property because they didn't want to do anything else with it.

I stand corrected then. I just kind of assumed after Riddick got a resounding "meh" at the box office and there never being a remaster of Butcher Bay and Dark Athena for newer systems (even just more bug fixes for Dark Athena would've been nice) that he'd given up on the franchise. Glad to hear there's still plans in the works.

The developers behind the Riddick games Starbreeze have been circling the drain for the last few years. They've had to lay off countless employees and even though Payday 2 was their main source of income, they were in such a bad spot they stopped production on new content for awhile and when they returned they went back on their "free content forever" promise for Payday 2.

Koch Media stepped in at some point semi recently and helped them out of their hole fully financing the development, release, and post release content for Payday 3.

I'm not sure if they still have the rights to the Riddick games or not, but they have sadly not been in a position financially to remaster them.

Just watched Detective Pikachu finally. Probably one of the best video game movies I've seen. Granted there aren't many good ones.

In no particular order the best video game movies:

Detective Pikachu

Sonic the Hedgehog

Mortal Kombat(2021)

Silent Hill

I did watch Warcraft and loved the visuals, but I don't remember a single thing about the plot.

People say good things about the most recent Tomb Raider, but haven't gotten around to watching that one yet.

New Tomb Raider is solid. I really enjoyed it.

The Prince of Persia movie is decent. Whitewashing (and for Jake Gyllenhal, of all actors!) aside, Ben Kingsley puts in a great performance and the action scenes are well done, even almost resembling the games at a couple points. "It almost resembles the source material" shouldn't really be praise but for video game movies it's practically a glowing recommendation.

If we're counting straight to video animated movies, Mortal Kombat: Scorpion's Revenge is fantastic. It's a fun reimagining of the plot of the first game with a great voice cast. Especially Joel McHale as Johnny Cage who is just perfect.

I own that animated MK movie but have yet to sit down and watch it. They have a sequel coming out later this year too

I saw some news about that a couple weeks ago. I can't wait! I also just learned that the director for both Scorpion's Revenge and the sequel was the director and a storyboard artist for several of my favorite Avatar: The Last Airbender episodes which explains so much.

He was also a producer on the amazing 2011 ThunderCats reboot! Still gutted it got cancelled

Saw Promising Young Woman. The character of the Dean didn't ring true to me. Great movie overall though.

Yeah, I went from apologizing to my girlfriend for renting it during that climactic scene, to praising the film's end and the journey throughout. Glad to have watched it.

With a baby on the way in a month and a half here, we watched Fatherhood on Netflix this past week and I was... not ready for that. Was in tears pretty much the entirety of the movie. Even with Hart's antics here and there... I am an emotional guy, so not too much of a surprise honestly. Just don't know what I would do without my love on this step of our lives...

Went for a pallet cleanse after that, so dove into five movies in the past week...

Luca (Little Mermaid/Finding Nemo mix... I'm a big bromance guy, and this was cute for what it was, but not very consequential)

Raya and the Last Dragon (very good, love the message, but damn.. are these the lamest dragons of all time? Even their flying is just rain bouncing. Designs are awful in terms of dragons as well. Definitely not their answer to How To Train Your Dragon)

Onward (My favorite of the three. Brotherly bonds are a special thing, I'm happy to say I look up to my older brother in complete opposite ways as these leads. I will remember this one for awhile.)

Nobody (As a Better Call Saul fan, it was pretty great to see our guy Jimmy get a John Wick style flick. I found it more realistic as he wasn't god-like, and often got whooped. That scene at the end was incredibly unrealistic though, and you'll know what I mean if you've seen it.)

Ingrid Goes West (Coming off the heels of this one just last night. My old roommate and I have been meaning to see it for years, but the stars aligned as he has always been an Aubrey Plaza fan. WandaVision turned him into an Elizabeth Olsen fan, and here we are... Wyatt Russel from Falcon and Winter Soldier, and even Pom Klementieff from Guardians 2 join this one, ironically. I do not approve the message the film leaves, but damn it was an enjoyable, slightly predictable ride.. until the 3rd act. :D)

Watched a few movies the last week

Onward- Made me cry a couple times. My dad passed a few years ago and I still haven't recovered. It quite frankly turned my life upside down. My brother and I, who I have always been really close with, are currently at odds and have barely spoken in like nine months. It's really bad. This movie was fantastic though.

Luca- Fun movie with a strong message. Fairly predictable, but the voice cast is fun.

Red and Red 2- I have a massive crush on Mary Louise Parker and honestly just watched them for that reason. They were fantastic though. Super fun action and great comedic timing. Bruce Willis and Parker had pretty strong chemistry as well. Also, normally I can't stand John Malkovich, but he's an absolute treat in both movies as Marvin.

Layer Cake- Another movie that's just fun. It has some great comedy, some out of nowhere backstabbing, clever dialogue, and Daniel Craig is great. Had to use subtitles though because there were some super thick accents that I just could not decipher.

I watched one of the suggested movies here ("Soul") and was happy I did. Though the supernatural elements are a bit weird, the message was really heartwarming.

Also finally watched Joker now that it's on netflix and I totally understand where that Oscar came from. Amazing acting.
