MMA: Trivia, facts, questions and fun stuff.

Not sure if a straight up trivia thread would go down as well as the wrestling ones here, so I figured I'd make this thread as a place for answers and fun facts/stories just as much as trivia questions.

I'll get it started, feel free to chime in with trivia, 'Who Am I?'s' and questions!

*** Chuck Liddell: Fought his first UFC fight against Noe Hernandez billed as a wrestler. After the bout, then UFC matchmaker John Peretti told Chuck that they weren't really looking for more wrestlers at that time, and to try and keep his fights standing from then on. Good advice eh? :)

*** The tattoo on Chuck's head reads 'Koei-Kan', the style of Karate he first practiced as a kid.

*** Igor Vovchanchyn: One of the most well-liked and respected MMA fighters of the NHB era, Vovchanchyn made a name for himself fighting in the no holds barred tournements in Russia in the 90's. Between January 23rd and March 30th 1996, he competed in THREE 8-man tourneys, finishing off all NINE opponants with strikes. Wow.

*** He competed in 10, one-night tournements in his career, winning all but two. Both his tournement losses saw him reach the finals and lose to much bigger, fresher men, one being Mark Coleman.

*** There's a story that is still told to this day, that as a child/teen Igor had huge anger issues. When he reached mid-teens his temper got worse and the villagers would ring a large bell in the center of the village as a signal for everyone to run inside and lock their doors as Igor rampaged. Unfortunatelly this much-loved MMA folktale was more of a 'Chuck Norris fact' than a true story.

*** Bas Rutten: MMA legend Rutten did not take up martial arts untill he hit his 20's. Prior to that he was a clothing model.

*** Tank Abbott: Was never a 'Pitfighter' as the UFC claimed - it was a moniker that they came up with for him on the night of his UFC debut. He was actually an accomplished amateur wrestler and boxer, but this was never mentioned and it is assumed that the UFC were unaware at the time. The idea was that the UFC wanted to prove that a barroom brawler (or Pitfighter) would be dismantled by a traditional martial artist, hence why Tank was matched with Jon Matua who was versed in the art of Kapu Kuʻialua, or Hawaiian bone breaking. Tank punched him into a mild seizure in under 20 seconds.

*** Ironically, had Tank's true credentials (however weak) been announced, he would have been recognised as the first wrestler/boxer hybrid in the UFC.

*** There has never been a UFC champion who has fought his entire career in the UFC. The closest are Tito Ortiz and Brock Lesnar, who have had one fight each outside of the organisation.

*** Kazushi Sakuraba holds the dubious honor of being the only fighters to lose in a UFC tournement, then come back to win it.

*** Contrary to popular belief, Royce Gracie was not chosen to fight in the UFC because he was the most unthreatening-looking of the Gracie clan. Royce was never supposed to compete in the UFC at all. Family champion Rickson was pegged to fly the flag, however was ostricised when UFC founder Rorion Gracie discovered that Rickson had been teaching 'Gracie Jiu Jitsu' privately without his permission. Rorion had trademarked Gracie Jiu Jitsu at the time.

TRIVIA QUESTIONS!!!

- Aside from appearing on The Ultimate Fighter, what to Joe Stevenson, Travis Lutter, James Wilkes and Amir Sadollah have in common?

- I have appeared in a UFC video game. I am a real person. I am a professional MMA fighter. I have never competed in the UFC. Who am I?

- It's a well known fact that Fedor Emelianenko's only 'loss' in MMA came at the hands of a cut he recieved from Tsuyoshi Kohsaka in Block B of the RINGS 'King of Kings' tournement. However, if he'd gone on to win Block B, who was the winner of Block A that he would have faced in the finals?

Question 3: It's the fabled fight-that-never-happened with Randy Couture, yes?

To the other two, no idea.

Facts: PANCRASE actually held the first show registered by Sherdog.com as an MMA event, in September 1993. PANCRASE's rules early on are often ridiculed as MMA, since, a-la pro wrestling, strikes with closed fists weren't aloud to the heads, and all PANCRASE fighters entered into a 'gentleman's agreement' not to utilise ground and pound.

Ken Shamrock is the only fighter to have fought more than 3 times in 1993, having fought on both cards, amassing a 2-2 record. He beat PANCRASE founder and shoot-wrestling legend Masakatsu Funaki in the healine of PANCRASE, via an arm triangle choke.

More at a late date, if I CBA...

Question:

We all know that Shane Carwin's demolition job on Gabriel Gonzaga holds the record for the UFC's fastest knockout. Who can lay claim to the unofficial fastest knockout crown within the UFC?

UFC and later EF matchmaker has had a varied career since leaving MMA. Can anyone name two of the sports that Peretti is trying/has tried to poularize?

Question 3: It's the fabled fight-that-never-happened with Randy Couture, yes?

Correct!

Facts: PANCRASE actually held the first show registered by Sherdog.com as an MMA event, in September 1993.

There are I think 24-26 Shooto events with verified MMA fights listed in Sherdog's fightfinder before Sept 93. There are some in Brazil and I think one in America as well, but the Shooto ones are the only ones I know for sure.

Funaki, Minoru Suzuki, Kazuo Takahashi, Vernon 'Tiger' White, Katsuomi Inagaki, Ryushi Yanagisawa and Takaku Fuke all fought four times in 93. Mostly against each other in Pancrase, who 'toured' on a monthly basis at the time, having shows in September, October, November and December '93.

We all know that Shane Carwin's demolition job on Gabriel Gonzaga holds the record for the UFC's fastest knockout. Who can lay claim to the unofficial fastest knockout crown within the UFC?

I'm thinking Ludwig.

UFC and later EF matchmaker has had a varied career since leaving MMA. Can anyone name two of the sports that Peretti is trying/has tried to poularize?

Some bizzare amalgamation of MMA and American football was one of them. Geez. I know Art Davie tried to start up X-Arm or whatever it was called, was he involved in that too? Or maybe that San Do thing with three guys fighting at the same time. They all seem about as stupid as each other, so thats what I'm going with :D

Question:

we all know?? this is incorrect to my knowledge.

his KO of gonzaga was mid to late first rd after being a bit rocked himself. no where near the fastest KO. that belongs to to Todd Duffie, 7 seconds.....

LOL, I didn't even see that! As soon as I saw "fastest KO", my mind snapped to the Ludwig fight as it's a popular bit of MMA trivia.

For those who don't know, Ludwig knocked out Jon Goulet in about four seconds, however the timekeeper screwed up, so the official time recorded was 11 seconds. Oops.

Carwin/Gonzaga was 1:09

...I guess while we're at it, Shamrock was 5-1 in 1993 as well. Beat Funaki, Takahasi and Fuki in Pancrase, then beat Smith and lost to Gracie at UFC 1, then beat Dutch kickboxer Andre van den Oetelaar at Pancrase 4.

One of my favourite MMA-related stories.

British MMA fighter Lee Murray, a UFC veteran who took Anderson Silva to a decision in a great fight, masterminded the largest ever robbery in British history, stealing £53,000,000 (about $100,000,000) in cash.

He fled to Morocco, where he was eventually imprisoned, however there is no extradition treaty between there and the UK. He has attempted numerous escapes, including smuggling saw blades into his cell in biscuits (seriously), losing weight to squeeze through bars and scaling prison walls.

He was freed a couple of years ago when he gained Moroccan citizenship, but was re-arrested when the UK issued a formal request that he be tried in Morocco for the crime.

He is reportedly living in luxury in prison, as his wealth allows him to buy and sell prison guards as he pleases. Items found in his cell have included laptops (with internet access), designer clothes, DVD's, videogames, TV's and FIVE KILOS of drugs including heroin and marijuana.

If it sounds like a movie...well, it's being made into one as we speak :D

**BONUS MURRAY FACTS**

-Was nearly killed when he was repeatedly stabbed outside the Funky Budda in London when he was trying to stop a fight between to party guests.

-Beat Jorge Rivera in the UFC and signed a long term contract with Zuffa which was terminated when his criminal past prevented him from securing visa's for the US.

-Creamed Tito Ortiz in a huge brawl outside China White in London after UFC 38.

BOOM, HEADSHOT!!!!

(gathered from another forum;))

UFC 1:

- Zane Frasier was invited because he beat up Frank Dux in the lobby at a Karate competition.

-Gerarld Gordeau was invited because he was from the same gym as Ernesto Hoost and the organizers couldn’t afford Hoost.

-Ken Shamrock was recruited after one of his students had applied, they decided they wanted the teacher instead

-Big John McCarthy applied, but was told that Royce would be the only one to represent Jiu-Jitsu. He could enter after Royce was done with it.

-One of Teila Tuli’s teeth that Gordeau kicked out just missed John McCarthy’s wife when it flew into the crowd. She got up and left the event immediately.

-Art Jimmerson tried to back out when he found out the details of the event but they threatened to sue him because they had already started promoting him.

- The promoters considered adding an electric fence and an alligator-filled moat around the Octagon.

Other Events:

- At Vale Tudo Japan '95, a 154 lb Japanese fighter named Yuki Nakai took on UFC 1 finalist Gerard Gordeau in the first round. Gordeau gouged his eyes so bad that Yuki suffered permanent blindness in one of them. He still won the fight by heel hook and his next fight by armbar before losing to Rickson Gracie in the finals. Rickson said after that he purposely never hit Yuki in the face out of respect. Yuki refused interviews for many years out of fear that it would have a negative impact on MMA.

- At UFC 9, Zane Frasier kneed Cal Worsham while he was running at him in the chest breaking three ribs, one punctured his lung narrowly missing his heart which was badly bruised. In the hospital he was told that his survival was in question.

To this day it is the worst injury ever incurred at a UFC event. Worsham still won the fight

- At UFC 12, Tank Abbot got into a backstage fight with Wallid Ismail

- At UFC 28, Josh Barnett and Gan McGee had the first and only UFC Super HW fight

- At UFC 36, Matt Hughes fought Shooto’s former MW (167 lb) Champ, Sakurai, because the current Champ had trouble getting a visa. The Champ was Anderson Silva.

- At UFC 39, Ricco Rodriguez stopped Randy Couture, making it the ONLY fight in UFC history (as of UFC 95) to be stopped in the 5th round

- At UFC 47, Mike Kyle bit Wes Sims on the chest during their fight.

-At Vale Tudo Japan ’97, Enson Inoue was DQ'd against F. Shamrock because his brother Egan ran into the ring

At PRIDE 9, Matt Serra’s opponent was injured by the pyrotechnics and the match was called off. Serra was never invited back.

At PRIDE 22, during the stare down, Rampage gave Igor Vovchanchyn a note that from “his mother” that said “Please don’t hurt my son”

- At PRIDE Critical Countdown Absolute, during the stare down when the ref finished the rules, Josh Barnett said to Mark Hunt “and no flying ass drops”

- At PRIDE Final Conflict 2004, Big Nog was stuck in traffic, so ‘lil Nog did his walk in for the opening ceremony

- PRIDE's "Shockwave" is not translated correctly. The real name is "The Man Festival"

- At Shooto 3/18, Hansen threw his mouth piece into the crowd to celebrate his victory…and hit Caol Uno’s mom in the head

-At IFC 11, Rich Franklin vs. Aaron Brink was ruled a “no contest” when Brink got his leg stuck between the mat and the cage

- At ADCC, Jeff Monson stripped bare naked (in front of everyone) in protest to the judge’s decision to DQ him. You can use a can opener for positioning, but not as a submission, his opponent (pe de Pano, I think) tapped when he did it so they ruled it a submission attempt and DQ'd him. He maintained he was positioning.

Gracies:

- The Gracie family first got noticed when Rorion did a 1989 Playboy article claiming to be the baddest man on the planet and issuing the "Gracie Challenge"

- Royce was the Gracie chosen for UFC 1 for two reasons. They wanted someone smaller to prove a point, and Rickson and Rorion had a big falling out over Rickson teaching from his home instead of at the Academy.

- Rorion Gracie was the fight scene coordinator for Lethal Weapon 1 (triangle at the end)

- Due to his uncontrollable temper, Ryan was reportedly banned by the family from fighting until he got treatment and became more stable.

- Tito called out Renzo Gracie after becoming the >200 lb Champ

- Rickson does have an official loss. At the 1993 US Sambo Championships he lost to Ron Tripp via uchi-mata in 45 seconds. Rickson claims he was misinformed of the rules

- Although Rickson has long been considered the family Champ, Rickson says Royler actually has the best technique in the family and only beats him because of his size advantage.

- Rickson actually only has 2 wins by armbar (both Takada fights) “Rickson by Choke” would be more accurate

Other Talents:

- Dan Severn is also writer for Penthouse

- Aaron Brink is a former porn star

- Jeff Monson worked as a family and children’s counselor

Ulracher apologized.

I've skimmed most of this stuff, but we can update this factoid with BJ Penn's stoppage of Diego Sanchez.

- I have appeared in a UFC video game. I am a real person. I am a professional MMA fighter. I have never competed in the UFC. Who am I?

And as for the only question I feel like answering because I heart him: Herb Dean, although retired MMA fighter may be more accurate.

These are the one's I'm posotive aren't true.

UFC 1:

-Gerarld Gordeau was invited because he was from the same gym as Ernesto Hoost and the organizers couldn’t afford Hoost. Just not true

-Ken Shamrock was recruited after one of his students had applied, they decided they wanted the teacher instead Ken *was* a student at the time, he was chosen via a recomendation from Pancrase, as well as his look and marketability

-One of Teila Tuli’s teeth that Gordeau kicked out just missed John McCarthy’s wife when it flew into the crowd. She got up and left the event immediately. Almost, it actually flew past the table where some sponsor/investor type people were sitting. I guess she could have been there as well

-Art Jimmerson tried to back out when he found out the details of the event but they threatened to sue him because they had already started promoting him. Jimmerson agreed, pulled out and haggled for more money ($20,000 guarenteed to be exact). He *did* decide to lay down for Gracie after seeing Zane Frasier being strechered out and Gerard Gordeau's foot being bandaged up with teath still inside it though

- At UFC 36, Matt Hughes fought Shooto’s former MW (167 lb) Champ, Sakurai, because the current Champ had trouble getting a visa. The Champ was Anderson Silva. Wishful thinking - Sakurai was brought in after huge demand by fans online at the time

- At PRIDE Final Conflict 2004, Big Nog was stuck in traffic, so ‘lil Nog did his walk in for the opening ceremony Had to stick the DVD in to be sure, but it's Rodrigo (Big) not Rogerio. To be fair, he looks so much younger anyone could be forgiven for making the mistake. The taletale sign is the ears.

Gracies:

- The Gracie family first got noticed when Rorion did a 1989 Playboy article claiming to be the baddest man on the planet and issuing the "Gracie Challenge" Only Rorion was in the US when the Playboy article was done. He used it when trying to pitch a show called "War of the Worlds" to people in the TV movie industry. The article was actually about the Gracie Challenge, which had existed in Brazil for years, where the Gracies were already very well known due to the Gracies in Action shows

- Royce was the Gracie chosen for UFC 1 for two reasons. They wanted someone smaller to prove a point, and Rickson and Rorion had a big falling out over Rickson teaching from his home instead of at the Academy. By all accounts, only the second part of that is true

- Due to his uncontrollable temper, Ryan was reportedly banned by the family from fighting until he got treatment and became more stable. Nobody was ever able to ban Ryan from doing anything

- Dana White owns 10% of the UFC, not Zuffa Nope, White owns part of Zuffa. UFC is a brand, not a company. Dana owns 9% following the recent sale to Flash Ent

- Igor Vovchanchyn had such a temper as a teen that whenever he was in a bad mood, the the villagers rang the local church bell so everyone would be warned to avoid him. Nope. I actually asked Igor (through a translator, he speaks very little English) about this at an It's Showtime! even in Amsterdam a few years back. He's also spoken about it in a few interviews he's done since retiring from MMA. He runs a resteraunt in the Ukraine now, btw.

I'm still not wrong. >_>

Like you said though, Herb's not technically an MMA fighter anymore ;)

Ah, who am I kidding, Herb totaly fits :-p

I'll rephrase the question:

We have appeared in UFC video games. We are real people. We are/were professional MMA fighters. We have never competed in the UFC. Who are we?

Bonus points: Can anyone name the other playable characters who are not professional MMA fighters/refs that have appeared in UFC games? I think there are 7.

- Aside from appearing on The Ultimate Fighter, what to Joe Stevenson, Travis Lutter, James Wilkes and Amir Sadollah have in common?

To answer this one as well, it was that they all lost their first fight after winning the Ultimate Fighter competition.

Stevenson lost to Josh Neer at UFN 4 by decision.

Lutter lost to Anderson Silva by triangle/elbows at UFC 67

Amir Sadollah lost to Johny Hendricks by TKO at UFC 101

Wilkes lost to Matt Brown by TKO at UFC 105
