Also, Chigurh - this is one of those things the book can get into better than the film, because it actually can be inside someone's head - doesn't think of himself as a killer. Fate is the killer - look at what he says about the silver dollar during the sequence you're thinking of. The conversation he has with Moss' wife? He doesn't understand - because she's asking him to be active, not just an instrument of Fate. (He may be a touch psychopathic in the clinical sense.)
