NWA 1989: Tradition To Innovation

NWA FALL BRAWL

Sunday Week 4 September 1989

The Wild Samoans vs. The Road Warriors

Norman The Lunatic vs. Flyin' Brian

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Fabulous Freebirds defend vs. The Steiners

Mike Rotundo vs. Steve Williams

NWA United States Heavyweight Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Tommy Rich

Sid Vicious vs. Z-Man

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

I would give solid predictions for all of these, but for the most part, it's just a common sense thing. The only ones to really "defend" is the Tag titles match, just because I think the Steiners will get cheated out of the belts here and get them later; and Rotundo/Williams, because I feel there's more and better things to be done with Mike than with Williams as far as a possible US/TV title push.

[...With everything that has gone on, it is looking like we are going to make a profit this month. That is a wonderful thing considering one of my goals from Mr. Turner is to increase the financial balance by 5,000,000. But I am still not completely happy with things so far. There is always room for improvement and when I do my end-of-month review with Mr. Turner I am planning to bring up a way to help the company...]

[...That way? I am planning on designing and building a developmental company. NWA would be the parent company to this promotion and they would serve as a way to develop the skills of new wrestlers so that they can get ready for the prime time. We already have men like Dory Funk, Jr. and Ole Anderson who I think would be prime candidates to go down there and train the up and coming generation...]

[...Looking across the wrestling scene, there are several wrestlers who I would just love to bring to the NWA. Some of them are on written contracts right now, though, with other companies. That would include wrestlers like Bret Hart, Arn Anderson, Tully Blanchard, Curt Hennig, Rick Rude and Jake Roberts. If word ever got out that any of these men were available, I would look to make them a high money offer to be part of the NWA. Other wrestlers on the more indy scene or within Japan that may be offered either a full-time contract or a developmental deal when we open that new territory would be: Chris Benoit, Chris Candido, Davey Boy Smith, Dynamite Kid, Kerry Von Erich, John Tatum, Mark Callous and more...]

[...Our two biggest competitors right now are Verne Gagne and the American Wrestling Association and Vince McMahon and the World Wrestling Federation. Both of those companies have had their major events this month: AWA with Desolation and WWF with Saturday Night's Main Event. The major matches that occured on Desolation were: Wahoo McDaniel and Nikita Koloff defeating Jerry Blackwell and Baron Von Raschke and, well, not much else. They honestly didn't hit on any other decent matches and that is a shame for Verne but it is good for us. WWF on the other hand...]

[...WWF's Saturday Night's Main Event had several matches that the crowd in the arena seemed to enjoy, including Hulk Hogan defeating The Superfly to retain the WWF World Heavyweight Title, Roddy Piper defeating The Macho Man, The Brainbusters defeating The Hart Foundation to retain the WWF World Tag Team Titles, Honky Tonk Man defeating Shawn Michaels and Rick Martel defeating Dusty Rhodes....]

[...Speaking of Dusty Rhodes, it's a shame what they're doing to him over there in the WWF. The man is a 3-time former NWA World Heavyweight Champion and he has held numerous other titles around the world and they have him out there in polka dots? That'll put butts in the seats...]

[...Finally, we do have some new friendships to report on that I have noticed backstage: Butch Reed and Jason Knight seem to have bonded. Rip Morgan and Nitron have bonded as well. Also, Gordon Solie and Scott Steiner seem to be getting along a lot better...

These warnings are helpful :D

I'm glad you like the warnings. I'm going to be doing them for every show both in this diary and in my USPW diary. I feel they make sure that people don't forget to put up their predictions through a busy and hectic lifestyle. I definitely know that putting predictions on a wrestling diary on a message board isn't and shouldn't be someone's high priority. lol.

Thanks a lot for your predictions and welcome to the diary. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to post them. Enjoyed reading your comments.

John Tatum! Really?:D

Yep. Ole Hollywood John Tatum is a definite possibility. Maybe look into 'Rugged' Rod Price as well and be the first to form the Coast To Coast Connection.

The Wild Samoans vs. The Road Warriors

most dominant team of all time.

Norman The Lunatic vs. Flyin' Brian

pure mis-match of size - but don't discount the heart of Pillman. On a side note, I once almost "stole" Brian's bengal jacket because he "disappeared" with some chick at an after party....but Zenk rescued the coat.

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Fabulous Freebirds defend vs. The Steiners - going with an upset - maybe by DQ/COR to further the feud and buy some time for another team to rise up to challenge the birds

Mike Rotundo vs. Steve Williams - draw (maybe even double dq) between the college all-americans. set up an "amateur rules" match

NWA United States Heavyweight Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Tommy Rich -- "Somebody say sum'in 'bout a US title match!!??" On this night, Wildfire is no match for the total package

Sid Vicious vs. Z-Man -- major upset. Zenk outlasts the massive Vicious. Maybe some interference by Spivy backfires - good way to set up Pillman-Zenk vs Skyscrapers for the next show

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

loved this feud when it happened real time - thought it was one of the Horsemen's finest hours. alas it was cut short and Sting kicked out so 4 horsemen could go back heel. Honestly thought they left so much unfinished potential on the table for short-sightedness. Horsemen vs Freebirds? Horsemen vs Sullivan and Forces of Darkness?? I'm sure you will do us proud and give us some of those would-be classics!

Location: Charlotte Coliseum, Charlotte, NC (Mid Atlantic)

Attendance: 26,041

There was a feeling that a number of the angles used did not reach the standards set by the in-ring action.

This show can be considered a success, it should have increased our popularity.

Pre Show: In a bout that featured great action and a good crowd, Ricky Steamboat defeated Kevin Sullivan in 10:10 by pinfall with a Flying Body Press...B

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/samu5.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/fatu7.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/animal3.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/hawk3.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/paulellering.jpg

The Wild Samoans vs. The Road Warriors

[The show went immediately into the entrances of the opening bout as we were welcomed to the show by our announcers for this evening: Jim Ross, Gordon Solie and Paul E. Dangerously. The Road Warriors were accompanied as always by their manager Paul Ellering. The opening match itself lived up to the title of Fall Brawl. It wasn't so much a match as a fight. Not a lot of psychology shown in this match and at times it drifted toward just punches thrown and headbutts by the Wild Samoans. Road Warrior Hawk was kept in the corner of the Wild Samoans during the bout and they double-teamed him in the corner. Fatu nailed Hawk with a savate kick and made a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout!...]

[...The Wild Samoans tagged in and out in their corner, wearing down Hawk until he ducked a double clothesline from them and came back with a double clothesline of his own! He managed to tag out to Animal at that point and Animal came in like a house on fire! Animal press-slammed Fatu out of the ring and then pointed toward Hawk! He tagged in his partner and lifted Samu on his shoulders in a feat of strength -- Doomsday Device! Samu flipped onto his back and Hawk made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Road Warriors (Via Pinfall @ 11:11)

Match Rating: B-

[...The crowd went wild with the pinfall made by the Road Warriors and Paul Ellering entered the ring to celebrate with them. The celebration was short-lived though as both Road Warriors were attacked from behind...]

[...Teddy Long led The Skyscrapers into the ring. Sid Vicious and Dan Spivey attacked The Road Warriors but they didn't have the advantage for long. The two teams turned into a brawl inside the ring and the fun police came down to break things up.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[As the fun police worked to break things up inside the ring, the focus turned down to the interview area where three men walked out and moved to stand together...]

[...Gary Hart led out members of his J-Tex Corporation and he had the microphone...]

Gary Hart

"Sting! Ric Flair! Tonight, my two men here will earn shots at your respective title belts. Terry Funk is going to take out the NWA World Champion and The Great Muta is going to take out the NWA World Television Champion. The Great Muta is a master in all of the martial arts. He is the most unique wrestler in the business today. Terry Funk's qualifications come without being said. Tonight, Sting and Ric Flair? You're gonna be taken out."

[...Gary pats his charges on the shoulder and they head out as we head back to the ring...]

Match #2

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikeshaw2.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/brianpillman.jpg

Norman The Lunatic vs. Flyin' Brian

[This was definitely a battle between Goliath and David inside the ring. Luckily, the chemistry was in their favor and these two did a decent bout, though it fell somewhat below average. Flyin' Brian tried to use all of his high flying techniques on Norman but had a hard time bringing the larger man down. Brian went for a crucifix but Norman fell backward on top of him! Norman bounced off the ropes and leaped -- Karachi Krunch! This one is over: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Norman The Lunatic (Via Pinfall @ 8:17)

Match Rating: C-

Match #3

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match

The Fabulous Freebirds defend vs. The Steiners

[because we ARE the NWA, we spend more time on our wrestling action than our competitors. That is no more true than tonight as we head right into the NWA World Tag Team Titles match. Two very good tag teams in this bout. What the Steiners lack in experience teaming together they make up for because they are brothers and know each other in a way that no other can. There wasn't a whole lot of selling going on but both teams got in some great power and technical moves. Michael Hayes hit Rick Steiner with a Bulldog and made a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Pinfall broken up by Scott! The referee moved in to get Scott out of the ring and Jimmy Garvin came in and the Freebirds dropped a double elbow on Rick!...]

[...The match continued with the Freebirds in control, using several restholds, showing that the match was going to go on for awhile longer. Jimmy Garvin got Rick Steiner into a Sleeperhold and was slowly putting the Dog Faced Gremlin down. The crowd got behind the Steiner Brothers with Scott egging them on while on the apron. Rick managed to fight his way back to his feet and he dropped Garvin with a back drop! Both men lie on the mat and referee Randy Anderson began the mandatory ten count. Rick started crawling toward his corner. Jimmy Garvin grabbed his leg to prevent him from getting there but Garvin got a boot to the face and Rick reached out, making the tag! In came Scott with a Steinerline to Michael Hayes and then one to Jimmy Garvin! Scott got the crowd pumped and excited! He made a signal and then sent Jimmy Garvin to the ropes -- Frankensteiner! He moved over and made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- Pinfall broken up by Michael Hayes! Hayes pulled Scott to his feet -- Steinerline from Rick Steiner! Down goes Hayes! Scott pointed to the top turnbuckle and Rick climbed up. Scott pulled Garvin up and lifted him on his shoulders -- Top Rope Bulldog! Scott makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Steiner Brothers (Via Pinfall @ 16:40; The Steiner Brothers win the NWA World Tag Team Titles)

Match Rating: B

[...The crowd goes absolutely nuts as Missy Hyatt enters the ring, handing the Steiner Brothers the NWA World Tag Team Title belts! She raises their arms in victory! What a huge win for the two brothers from Michigan! The Steiners climb the turnbuckles, raising the belts for all to see and Missy claps along with the crowd.]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikerotundo.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/SteveWilliams2.jpg

Mike Rotundo vs. Steve Williams

[After the ring was cleared from the celebration by the Steiner Brothers, the next match was set up. This one was clearly going to be a technical classic from the outset as both men looked to prove that heir schools: Syracuse and Oklahoma respectively have the better wrestling program. Rotundo was the one who broke from the mat wrestling first. He used a rake to the eyes to gain the advantage. But then he went right back to control on the mat where he hoped he could negate the size and power advantage of Dr. Death. The match was definitely not a short one and there were several momentum bursts from both men. As the match neared its climax, Dr. Death accidentally bumped into referee Tommy Young, knocking him down. Williams went to check on Young as Rotundo rolled out of the ring. Rotundo grabbed a chair from ringside and slid back inside. He waited for Williams to turn -- CLANG! He hit Williams over the head with the chair, driving his opponent down to the mat. Rotundo tossed the chair out of the ring and revived the referee, making a cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Mike Rotundo (Via Pinfall @ 15:24)

Match Rating: C+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[The crowd was not happy about Rotundo's victory and it showed in their shouts and screams of disapproval. The crowd did cheer as one of their favorites came out from the back but he was not alone...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/bambambigelow.jpg

[...Bam Bam Bigelow threw a punch that knocked the JYD to the floor out by the ramp. These two looked like they had been brawling for several minutes before the action came out to the entrance ramp. Bigelow picked up JYD and body slammed him down to the floor! JYD looked hurt! The fun police come out quickly to break things up as Bigelow looks down at the Junkyard Dog to boos from the crowd. These two will have to settle their differences in the ring sometime soon!]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/tommyrich.jpg

NWA United States Heavyweight Title Match

Lex Luger defends vs. Tommy Rich

[Our United States Heavyweight Title match was next and the crowd was really looking to see the Total Package finally get his comeuppance and maybe Wildfire Tommy Rich is the man to do just that! Rich showed that this match was not going to be some easy defense for the U.S. Champ early on, taking down Luger with an exploder suplex. He caught him with a running elbow smash and made a cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! Luger was not about to be dominated though and once he took control he didn't want to look back. The Total Package dropped Rich with a military press slam and then a neckbreaker. The crowd booed when Luger played to them. Luger sent Rich to the ropes -- powerslam! Luger got up and flexed for a moment before he picked up Rich -- Human Torture Rack! Rich fought for about thirty seconds before he had no choice but to submit.]

Winner: Lex Luger (Via Submission @ 13:14; Lex Luger retains the NWA United States Heavyweight Title.)

Match Rating: C+

[...Following the sound of the bell, Luger did not release the Rack! Rich was in obvious pain but the referee couldn't get him down! Then another wrestler came running down from the back...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/rickysteamboat2.jpg

[...Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat entered the ring and Luger dropped Rich from the Rack so he could turn his full attention to Steamboat. Luger flexed in an attempt to intimidate Steamboat but the Dragon was having none of it. As Steamboat moved in, the fun police joined the two in the ring and kept them seperated. The crowd booed that but Doug Dillinger had his men there to keep these two from fighting. Luger left the ring with his NWA United States Title intact.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[The focus turned down toward the interview area where the crowd went nuts as 'Theme To 2001: A Space Odyssey' began to play!...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg

[...Ric Flair and Sting walked out to a huge crowd ovation here in Charlotte, North Carolina, Ric's hometown. Ric had the microphone first...]

Ric Flair

"I heard that there's a party going on here in Charlotte, North Carolina tonight! Whoooo! Terry Funk, Great Muta, I want you to take a look at the two thoroughbreds here in the NWA today. You have the NWA World Television Champion in the Stinger here and the NWA World Champion in Ric Flair. Do you know what that means? That means that we are the two best wrestlers in the business today. Not Terry Funk, not The Great Muta, not The Dragonmaster, not anyone in the J-Tex Corporation. Right here in my hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina we're gonna prove Whooooo what's causing all this, pal. Tell 'em Stinger!"

Sting

"I think you said a mouthful there, Ric. This is your hometown, your state of being. Tonight, we are going to make sure there's a party right here in Charlotte, North Carolina when we beat Terry Funk and the Great Muta in the center of the ring. Tonight, it's gonna be showtime! OOWWWW!"

[...Sting and Ric give a high five and then head to the back to get ready. We have one more match to go before the main event...]

Match #6

Sid Vicious vs. Z-Man

[This is the NWA debut of the man known as the Z-Man but he has some serious competition in one of the Skyscrapers with Teddy Long at ringside. The Z-Man used his speed early on to keep Sid off-balance. The Z-Man hit two dropkicks in a row to bring down his much larger adversary and he made a quick cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout sent the Z-Man flying! The Z-Man got up near the corner and he took a clothesline over the top rope to the floor below! Sid grabbed referee Nick Patrick and got his attention as Teddy Long put some boots to the head of the Z-Man at ringside! Teddy Long grabbed the Z-Man and tossed him back in the ring...]

[...Sid Vicious dominated the majority of the rest of the bout, focusing in on the back of the Z-Man. He took down the Z-Man with a big boot and then an elbow drop. He picked up the debuting wrestler and wrapped his hand around his throat -- Choke Slam! The pinfall was academic as Sid put his boot on top of the Z-Man's chest: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Sid Vicious (Via Pinfall @ 11:56)

Match Rating: B

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

[The crowd booed the victory by Sid Vicious, hoping for the Road Warriors to come out but they didn't. Instead, the fans were treated to a video...]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpg

[...The video was of the on-going feud between the four men in our main event! What a great tag team bout this should be right here at Fall Brawl and that tag team bout is...next!]

Match #7

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

[The crowd booed heavily when Gary Hart led the two members of J-Tex Corporation: Terry Funk and The Great Muta out to the ring. Hart tried to cover his ears so he wouldn't hear the boos but the announcers could barely hear themselves and they knew it would only get louder. 26,041 people rose in unison when 'Theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey' began to play. Chants of 'We Want Flair, We Want Flair' grew to a fevered pitch inside the arena. Sting came out first and stopped near the top of the entrance and then pointed toward the curtain...out came the NWA World Champion and the crowd nearly blew the roof off the place! 'Whoooo's' filled the arena as Ric Flair shook hands with Sting and then pointed toward the ring. The two of them nodded and charged the ring! Terry Funk and the Great Muta quickly exited the ring but Flair and Sting went out after them! Flair caught up with Funk near the guardrail and laced his chest with a chop! The bell sounded somewhere in the background as all four men battled on the floor! Flair grabbed Terry Funk by the head and ran toward the ring post -- blocked! Funk grabbed Flair's head and sent him head-first into the ring post! Funk tossed Flair inside the ring and joined him in...]

[...Funk went to work on Flair early in this bout though they seemed to be pacing themselves with some slow work in the beginning. Funk did a lot of playing to the Charlotte crowd, who booed him in return. No one was sitting down in the audience. Funk lifted Flair and dropped him with a brainbuster. He made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- Shoulder up! Flair knew exactly when he needed to get that right shoulder up and he waited until the last possible moment to expend that energy. The crowd started a 'Flair, Flair, Flair' chant in the background as Funk tagged out to Muta. Muta used some stiff karate kicks to bring Flair down to the mat. He put Flair's body near the turnbuckle and then climbed up -- Moonsault -- Nobody home! The Great Muta landed hard on his chest and the crowd popped here in Charlotte! Flair pulled himself up in the turnbuckle but Muta got up as well. Muta came over but Flair kicked him in the gut and turned him around so he was in the corner! Flair laced up his chest with chops again and again with the crowd chanting 'Whooooo' with each one! Flair grabbed Muta by the head and brought him into his own corner, ramming him head-first into the turnbuckle and tagging out to Sting!...]

[...Sting whipped Muta into the ropes -- dropkick connected! Muta crawled backward and tagged out to Terry Funk. Sting met Funk with punches near the center of the ring! The two men exchanged blows and Sting raised Funk up and dropped him with a press slam! The crowd went wild! Sting beat his chest and released an 'OOOWWWW' that was echoed throughout the crowd! Sting picked up Funk -- irish whip into the corner -- reversed! Sting hit his back against the corner and Funk followed in with a corner clothesline! Funk made a quick cover with his feet on the ropes: 1 -- 2 -- the referee stopped as he saw Funk's feet on the ropes! Funk argued with referee Tommy Young but it was of no consequence. As Funk went back on the attack, the announcers talked about Sting being one of the most resilient wrestlers in the business today! Funk and Muta tagged in and out in their corner, keeping a fresh man in while Sting remained inside the ring for his team. 'We Want Flair, We Want Flair' became a chant through the crowd! Muta tossed Sting outside the ring and Gary Hart threw in a few kicks for good measure while Muta had the referee distracted! Flair dropped down from the apron and walked around to save his friend. He helped Sting to his feet and back in the ring before he moved back to the corner. Muta looked down at Sting and picked him up, irish whipping him into the corner. Muta followed in with a handspring back elbow -- missed! Sting fell out of the way and Muta hit the corner! Sting pushed to his feet and Muta went for a kick but Sting caught the leg! Sting shook his head back and forth and turned Muta around -- atomic drop! Sting grabs Muta -- back suplex! This seems to have taken a lot of the energy out of Sting and he looks to make a tag. Ric is stretching his arm out to Sting! He wants to be tagged in so bad! The fans give Sting strength with their claps and cheers. Muta tags in Terry Funk! Funk runs over and Sting ducks a clothesline and rolls into the corner and tags out to Flair!...]

[...The crowd goes wild as Flair enters the ring and gives a strut while Funk begs off! Flair backs Funk into a corner and laces him up with chops! Funk's chest is beet red! Flair slams Funk out of the corner and bounces off the ropes -- kneedrop! The crowd goes wild for every move that Flair makes! Flair makes a cover and the crowd counts along: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! The Great Muta enters the ring but so does Sting! Referee Tommy Young moves to pull Sting out of the ring and Muta turns to Flair -- Green Mist! Muta hit Flair in the eyes with that blinding green mist! Flair tries to wipe his eyes to no avail. Muta exits the ring as Funk gets to his feet. He grabs Flair and whips him into the turnbuckle -- Flair flips over the top of the turnbuckle, landing on the apron and then falling outside the ring. Gary Hart moves around to where Flair is trying to get up but he is met with a wall of Sting! Hart backs off as Sting helps Flair up and into the ring. Terry Funk grabs Flair and pulls him in between his legs. He raises Flair but Flair blocks the Texas Piledriver! Flair elevates Funk up and over to the mat! The crowd is absolutely nuts! Nobody is sitting down as Flair gets to his feet and turns toward Funk! Flair ducks a punch thrown by Funk and grabs the leg -- shinbreaker by Flair! Funk grabs his leg in pain and Flair brings it over to the ring post! Flair exits the ring and takes the leg -- SLAMMING it against the ring post as the crowd goes wild! Flair enters the ring again and releases a 'Whooooo,' strutting for the crowd here in his hometown! Flair pulls Funk to the center of the ring and hooks the legs -- Figure 4 Leglock! Flair put Funk in his finisher! The Great Muta comes in but Sting cuts him off! Sting pushes Muta in the corner -- Stinger Splash! Muta falls to the mat and Sting hooks the legs -- Scorpion Deathlock! Sting and Flair each have their finisher on their rival! Referee Tommy Young checks on Terry Funk and it looks like -- Funk has passed out! Funk has passed out in the Figure 4 Leglock! Tommy Young calls for the bell!]

Winners: Ric Flair and Sting (Via Referee Stoppage @ 27:52)

Match Rating: A

[...All 26,041 people within the crowd are on their feet! Flair breaks the Figure 4 and Sting breaks the Scorpion Deathlock. The two have a look at each other and embrace in a hug! This was once a major rivalry but these two men have shown respect for each other tonight! Sting raises Flair's arm! Flair raises Sting's arm! The two pose in each corner and Flair struts, bouncing off the ropes and turning toward Sting. He releases a 'Whooooo' that is echoed by the crowd. Sting smiles at him and releases an 'OWWWW!' that is also echoed by the crowd! The two winners of the main event match stand tall together as the show comes to a close. What a night! Good night everyone!]

Nitron vs. Jason Knight

The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Dynamic Dudes

Birds get back on winning track after losing titles.

Bob Orton and Dick Slater vs. The Road Warriors

expect another visit by the Skyscrapers and bench-clearing brawl.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

The Skyscrapers vs. The Road Warriors -- have to think the first time will end in DDQ/DCOR. Could get a lot of mileage out of this feud (with singles and 6-man tags) - expect Scrapers to dominate the LOD like no one before in this first encounter (remember their real match where they tossed the warriors around like rag dolls). But in the end, Roadies will have their hands raised

Mike Rotundo vs. Z-Man -- Rotundo on a roll. Z-man was robbed against Sid Vicious.

Non Title: Bill Irwin vs. Ric Flair

Michael Hayes vs. Ricky Steamboat - Steamboat building for a US title shot, so gets a win over the Freebird

Nitron vs. Jason Knight

Hurray for jobber matches!

The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Dynamic Dudes

Rebounding from the title loss.

Bob Orton and Dick Slater vs. The Road Warriors

Even though Orton and Slater aren't jobbers, they're not the Road Warriors.

The Skyscrapers vs. The Road Warriors

The ref will call the match, when he loses control.

Mike Rotundo vs. Z-Man

I can definitely see Dr. Death playing a role in this outcome.

Non Title: Bill Irwin vs. Ric Flair

Yeah, this is a tough call....

Michael Hayes vs. Ricky Steamboat

I see the Freebirds continuing to work the tag division. Steamboat, though, is headed towards the US title. Nothing against Hayes, but Steamboat needs the momentum more.

NWA World Television Title Match: Dick Slater gets a shot against Sting©

Sting just main evented a PPV, but is only TV Champ. It will be tough to get that belt off him, without hurting him too much, or helping his opponent too much. I've always liked the Ultimate Warrior strategy, where if he wins a higher belt, he forfeits the lower one. I suppose for you NWA types, the Steiners did that with the US Tag Titles.

Glad to see Olympia back on the boards and picking in this diary!

NWA POWER HOUR*

Thursday Week 1 October 1989

Nitron vs. Jason Knight

What the hell? How does anybody know who will win this match?:D Shoot I will just go with the majority.

The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Dynamic Dudes

I really disliked Shane Douglas before he went to ECW.

Bob Orton and Dick Slater vs. The Road Warriors

Orton and Slater are a good team but they will not beat the LOD.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 1 October 1989

The Skyscrapers vs. The Road Warriors

DQ win by the LOD

Mike Rotundo vs. Z-Man

You know I like this match up a lot. I thought Tom Zenk's run in the NWA/WCW was really good.

Non Title: Bill Irwin vs. Ric Flair

Because there is no way Flair loses this match.

Michael Hayes vs. Ricky Steamboat

NWA World Television Title Match: Dick Slater gets a shot against Sting©

As long as I do not have to listen to his very bad theme song, "The Man called Sting", I am happy.

Nitron vs. Jason Knight

It's a job off - I'm plumping for Nitron to take the win even though Knight's been doing more work lately

The Fabulous Freebirds vs. The Dynamic Dudes

Tough one to call - both teams are at a cross-roads just now, going for the Freebirds but won't be too surprised to see Douglas and Ace get the win either

Bob Orton and Dick Slater vs. The Road Warriors

Slater and Orton don't have a chance against the LOD juggernaut!

The Skyscrapers vs. The Road Warriors

Surprised to see this so early given away on free TV, I supsect Teddy Long chicanery!

Mike Rotundo vs. Z-Man

Rotundo to continue his streak - I expect Mike to be the one to get the nod for inheriting Sting's TV Title

Non Title: Bill Irwin vs. Ric Flair

If Irwin wins clean, I'm donating my left testicle to nuclear science

Michael Hayes vs. Ricky Steamboat

New US Title number one contender needs to keep building with wins

NWA World Television Title Match: Dick Slater gets a shot against Sting©

Sorry Dick, not tonight.

Although I'm fairly certain I'll be wrong, I'll never pick against the Warriors. So there. Unless they face Bam Bam. Or The Bulldogs...

He wasn't going to beat Sid but a victory over Rotundo isn't outside the realms of possibility.

Can't see Sting dropping this title unless a) it is to a really big name or b) it is because he's moving on to a 'bigger' title.
