As they've moved much closer to realistic though you're kind of in the uncanny valley, which is why you're getting the reaction you're getting about them. I agree that they're much better renders, but artistically they've moved much further away from looking cartoonish. I'd actually take it as a compliment. If you're going to have a light set that accentuates details so strongly, you might want to try making the characters look more animated/cartoonish.
