NWA 1989: Tradition Revisited

Recommended Posts

Why NWA 1989?

As I stated following the demise of my WWF 2001 InVasion diary, I am still feeling the itch to write a real world diary. The InVasion diary was simply not working for me on a number of levels where it got to the point quickly where it was becoming more work than fun. More work than fun=no more diary. I selected to return to the NWA in 1989 because I feel that this is the diary where I have more story to tell and this is the game that is fun both in-game and on here to me. I did really enjoy my last NWA 1989 diary before I got creative burnout and also had to reset my computer. I feel that this is the honest-to-goodness best chance I have of hammering out a long lasting real world diary. So, while some may complain about angeldelayette syndrome, this is my choice. ;)

Which Avatar?

For the first time, really, I have selected the Grand Avatar for my user character. I did this so that he would stay within the background and I could focus on the wrestlers that truthfully existed back during this time period and it is working out very well for me.

When Should We Expect Shows?

Shows will, of course, be the main written thing on the diary. I am planning on running this on the timeframe I was running my WWF 2001 diary on. That means that shows should be posted every Monday, give or take. The first show itself will be posted a week from this Monday so that I have time to give to the writeup. Also, the B-Show, NWA Worldwide, will not be given a full writeup just as I did during the other diary.

User Preferences?

As of right now, I have turned off Owner Goals, Repetitive Booking Penalties, Advanced Bookings Cannot Be Deleted and "Dirt Sheet" match breakdown is hidden. All of the other things I have ticked into the on position.

Prediction Contest?

For those of you who follow my diaries, you know that I run prediction contests with prizes for the top person. This diary will be no different. The contests will run on a four month basis and include the B-Show in the contest as well. This means that the first prize will be given out at the end of the in-game year.

The DOTT game I have been playing and that we've discussed has me in a much better position to predict this time around :D Can't wait for things to begin, my friend!

NWA WORLDWIDE

Saturday Week 1 September 1989

Dick Slater vs. Ranger Ross

Even if I had never heard of Dick Slater, the name Ranger Ross doesn't fill me with thoughts of victory...

Norman The Lunatic vs. Jason Knight

Unless between the last diary and this you became a Knight fan, he's never, ever, going to win!

Kevin Sullivan vs. Steve Williams

Your a Dr. Death fan, simple. And to prove my point, you'll probably choose Sullivan! :p

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 1 September 1989

Non Title: The Dragonmaster vs. Ric Flair

Woooooooo!

Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin vs. Scott Steiner

Garvin seems more of a ready-made superstar at this point, where as Steiner's still working his way up the tag ranks with Rick.

The Samoan Swat Team vs. Dynamic Dudes

Can't see the Dudes getting a win against the likes of Samu and Fatu.

Cactus Jack vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

Jack DQs himself? Why not, no one else is going to pick Mr. Hyatt!

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Junkyard Dog

This isn't a case of 'no title changes on day one,' but more of a 'don't give JYD a title after 1985' rule.

NWA WORLDWIDE*

Saturday Week 1 September 1989

Dick Slater vs. Ranger Ross

Yay! You fixed it so that NWA has Ranger Ross (as they did in reality!) Let the jobbing begin!

Norman The Lunatic vs. Jason Knight

Heels go two up for the night.

Kevin Sullivan vs. Steve Williams

This would've been a decent draw at the time with the Varsity Club having just broken up - clear that Williams had the bigger long-term potential in front of camera.

WCW Saturday Night

Non Title: The Dragonmaster vs. Ric Flair

Not even a non-title match can convince me that Flair's going under here!

Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin vs. Scott Steiner

It's that classic poor member v strong member set-up that will usher in a Freebirds/Steiners feud

The Samoan Swat Team vs. Dynamic Dudes

Douglas and Ace sucked, quite frankly!

Cactus Jack vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

Bang! Bang! This has the makings of a bloody battle to end all battles... but it's on syndicated TV so it won't!

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Junkyard Dog

JYD is a decent foil for the heel main eventers to pick up wins but no more.

Love the idea of having arena reports to keep us up to date with what's going on in the other major feds... Although the idea of having to sit through a Haku/Bushwhacker Luke match!!! Just wow!

I definitely had to sign Ranger Ross. He is an important staple of the NWA at this point. ;)

And I am glad you like the Arena Reports. I am going to be bringing in things like that from the old PWI era, of which I have some magazines dating back to 1993. So instead of website stuff it will be like reading the old magazines.

I decided that this is going to be one of those give-or-take weeks since it is the first card of the diary. I have decided to go ahead and place a 24 hour warning for predictions for the first cards here. I am looking to have the card posted tomorrow. You still have until Monday to get your responses in for the Dream Match poll. The following have already made their predictions for the actual cards:

bgbuff

nick21985

jhd1

smurphy1014

Timber

rjhabeeb

Ritchardo

Thank you for the predictions and comments and I hope that everyone enjoys the diary!

Apologies if I'm being a bit thick, but what is the dream match poll? Anyway, can't wait for the show, my friend! :D

NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair vs. WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan

In in-ring terms Flair would win every time but Hogan's got that extra something, brother that takes it to a whole 'nother level. Whatcha' gonna' do!?

NWA United States Champion Lex Luger vs. WWF Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior

I was never a huge Luger fan but that may be due to my lack of WCW viewing.

NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) vs. WWF World Tag Team Champions The Brainbusters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard)

I have to admit to never seeing a Freebirds match. Arn, on the other hand, is great.

NWA: Sting vs. WWF: Andre The Giant

This is a tough one. Even though I didn't watch WCW Sting is one of those people that can never be imitated (try as Ole might). Andre was cool, but Sting just edges it.

NWA: Terry Funk vs. WWF: Randy Savage

Everyone knows I'm no Terry Funk fanatic...

NWA: The Road Warriors (Animal and Hawk) vs. WWF: Demolition (Ax and Smash)

Ooooooooh whaaaaaaaat aaaaa rushhhhhhhh!

NWA: The Skyscrapers (Sid Vicious and Dan Spivey) vs. WWF: The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart)

I don't think I've ever seen someone say they dislike Bret Hart and Neidhart has an awesome beard.

NWA: Ricky Steamboat vs. WWF: Ted DiBiase

Everyone has a price, for the Million Dollar Man, hahahaha!

NWA: Bob Orton vs. WWF: Roddy Piper

Despite having one of the worst Scottish accents I've ever heard, Roddy Piper could make you laugh.

NWA: The Steiner Brothers (Rick and Scott Steiner) vs. WWF: The Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty)

Mullets galore!

I guess I'm a WWF man through and through! :D

In the old Apter magazines, aka Pro Wrestling Illustrated, The Wrestler, etc. they would occassionally take the top guys from the two top companies, generally WCW and WWF and say who they thought would win. So every about 4 months or so I am going to do the same and get votes from people on it.

This intrigued me, so here we go. NWA 1989 was a little ahead of my time (although I did have a lot of 89/90 PPVs at one point) so I won't predict until I'm a bit more up-to-date with who was doing what and so on. A dream match poll is good, though - and a nice way of keeping us up to date with what's going on elsewhere:

NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair vs. WWF World Heavyweight Champion Hulk Hogan Because it's Hulk, and his whole shtick was not losing to people like Flair

NWA United States Champion Lex Luger vs. WWF Intercontinental Champion The Ultimate Warrior Because in my universe no-one ever beat the Warrior

NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes and Jimmy Garvin) vs. WWF World Tag Team Champions The Brainbusters (Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard) Because the 'busters were awesome

NWA: Sting vs. WWF: Andre The Giant At this stage in Andre's career he was being used to put Warrior over, and the same would happen here

NWA: Terry Funk vs. WWF: Randy Savage Both actually tied up in heated World title feuds right here, I believe, but Savage was the champion more recently

NWA: The Road Warriors (Animal and Hawk) vs. WWF: Demolition (Ax and Smash) Demolition grew into the role of RW knock-offs, and A&H weren't what they had been by '89, but still...

NWA: The Skyscrapers (Sid Vicious and Dan Spivey) vs. WWF: The Hart Foundation (Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart) If only because, at this point in their careers, the Harts were the designated jabronis while the Skyscrapers were getting a push

NWA: Ricky Steamboat vs. WWF: Ted DiBiase Again, Steamboat is fresh off a World title reign so would be the logical pick

NWA: Bob Orton vs. WWF: Roddy Piper Plastercasts allowed? Even if they were, Piper would pull something out of the bag

NWA: The Steiner Brothers (Rick and Scott Steiner) vs. WWF: The Rockers (Shawn Michaels and Marty Jannetty) It'd be a great match, but while the Steiners were on the cusp of a big push, the Rockers were actually even further away from one than the Harts, which is saying something

So I make that a tie. Demands a tie-break, really :p

[The show opens near the broadcast booth as fans go wild here for NWA's World Championship Wrestling! The camera zooms in on two men: Gordon Solie and Gary Hart.]

Gordon Solie

"Hello everyone, Gordon Solie here and welcome to World Championship Wrestling. I'm here with the manager of the J-Tex Corporation Gary Hart. Gary, you asked for some time to talk about your client Terry Funk."

Gary Hart

"That's right, Gordon Solie. As everyone saw at the Great American Bash, Ric Flair CHEATED in order to retain the NWA World title. Not only did he cheat but he injured my man Terry Funk. Therefore in less than a week at Fall Brawl, Terry Funk will be unable to compete in the tag team main event. I have spoken with the NWA Board of Directors and they have seen fit for me to name Terry's replacement. That man is none other than Dirty Dick Slater. Dick has a history with Ric Flair and he is looking to take it to the man who cheated him out of a bounty several years ago. Of course all of this is dependent on Ric Flair even making it to Fall Brawl."

[Gary releases a laugh and moves to walk off.]

Gordon Solie

"Some auspicious words by Gary Hart. Now, let's head up to ring announcer Gary Michael Cappetta and the opening bout here on World Championship Wrestling."

[The focus turns up to the ring.]

Non Title

The Dragonmaster vs. Ric Flair

[Our opening match is a contest featuring the man who many believe to be the greatest in the world. If you don't believe it, just ask Ric Flair and he'll tell you. The Dragonmaster is a good martial artist and in the early moments of the match he kept Flair back with those martial arts kicks. One kick came too many though as Flair caught it and drove an elbow right into the knee. Flair spent the next few minutes working on the knee of The Dragonmaster, making Gary Hart more and more irate at ringside. Flair lit up the chest of The Dragonmaster with those hard knife-edge chops and then took him down with a kneebreaker. Flair hooked the legs -- Figure 4 Leglock! The Dragonmaster fought and fought against the Figure 4 but Flair is the master of that hold and The Dragonmaster had no choice but to submit!]

Winner: Ric Flair (Via Submission @ 7:25)

Match Rating: B-

[As Flair released the hold, he was attacked from behind by Dick Slater and The Great Muta. Slater set Flair in the corner and Muta nailed him with a handspring elbow! Slater pulled Flair in, setting him up for a Piledriver.]

[it's Sting! Sting hits the ring, throwing punches on Muta and Slater! Sting with a discus punch on Slater! Slater falls outside the ring. The Dragonmaster comes after Sting and Sting catches him with a spinning spinebuster! Sting hooks the legs -- Scorpion Deathlock! Sting hooks his finisher on The Dragonmaster and points toward The Great Muta! Could he be next in this hold?]

[The attention returns to the broadcast booth area where Jim Ross is standing with the NWA World Television title belt sitting on the broadcast table.]

Jim Ross

"Ladies and gentlemen, as many of you witnessed on pay-per-view, there was a controversial double pin in the match between Sting and The Great Muta at the Great American Bash. With that in mind, the Board of Directors of the NWA has informed me that the NWA World Television title has been held up pending further review. We will have more on this situation as it develops. But for now let's head backstage and to my colleague Bob Caudle who is standing by with the Steiner Brothers and their manager Missy Hyatt."

[Jim looks to the camera and nods and we head backstage.]

[And we do head backstage where Rick Steiner is jogging around, releasing barks. Scott is standing beside Bob Caudle with Missy slightly off to the side twirling a piece of hair.]

Bob Caudle

"Thank you, Jim. I am here with the Steiner Brothers and their manager Missy Hyatt. Scott, tonight you have a one on one contest with one half of the NWA World Tag Team Champions: Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin. Your thoughts as we head toward that match."

Scott Steiner

"First of all, Bob, thanks for having me. Tonight, when I get done with Jimmy Garvin they're not gonna be calling him Gorgeous any more. We are two of the top wrestling stars from the University of Michigan and we're going to prove it starting tonight."

Bob Caudle

"Alright, thank you, Scott. Let's head to the ring."

[And we do just that.]

Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin vs. Scott Steiner

[A pretty decent match that showcased both men in this contest. Of course Garvin is one half of the NWA World Tag Team Champions along with Michael Hayes as The Fabulous Freebirds, while Scott Steiner is teaming with his brother Rick. Garvin tried to outwrestle Steiner early on but Steiner quickly proved his technical skill. Steiner took down Garvin with a tilt-a-whirl suplex for a two count. Garvin came back and hit Steiner with a hard vertical suplex and went for a DDT. Steiner grabbed the ropes and kept himself from falling! Steiner picked up Garvin and sent him to the ropes -- Frankensteiner! What a move from Scott Steiner! Scott makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3! A big upset for Scott Steiner!]

Winner: Scott Steiner (Via Pinfall @ 6:43)

[As Scott Steiner celebrates, we head backstage for these prerecorded comments from the two men known as The Road Warriors, who are suspiciously without their manager Paul Ellering.]

Animal

"Take a good look right here everyone at two of the baddest men walking this stinking, rotting planet! That's right, Hawk and I are willing to take on any comers in a fair fight and sometimes we just might fight dirty. But fighting dirty is exactly what the Samoan Swat Team did at the Great American Bash when they kept my brother Hawk here inside the steel cage and it was a five on one assault. We are going to correct that at Fall Brawl, though. Tell 'em about it, Hawk."

Hawk

"WWWEEELLLLLL! SST, you made the biggest mistake that you could have made: you let me live. You didn't kill me inside that cage and that is what is going to come back to haunt you. But you won't have to wait until Halloween Havoc for a haunting. At Fall Brawl...OHHHHHHHH What a rush!"

[Road Warriors both flex for the camera and we head back to the ring.]

The Samoan Swat Team vs. Dynamic Dudes

[Paul E. Dangerously leads his Samoan Swat Team down to the ring for this contest against the athletic and fast pace of the two surfers in the Dynamic Dudes. Both Johnny Ace and Shane Douglas tried to use their speed early on during the match but it was negated by the sheer power of Samu and Fatu. Samu took Ace outside the ring and hit him with a vertical suplex outside on the pads. Inside the ring, Fatu took Douglas down with a headbutt. Samu entered the ring and the two men looked toward Douglas -- Double Savate Kick! Fatu made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Samoan Swat Team (Via Pinfall @ 6:19)

[As soon as the bell sounded, the Road Warriors hit the ring! Hawk went after Fatu and Animal went after Samu! These two tough teams are brawling in the ring and up the aisle, folks! It's a pier four brawl right here in the Charles Koch Arena! Officials have come out doing their best to seperate these two teams but there won't be any seperating them at Fall Brawl in less than a week.]

[We head backstage once again for some more prerecorded comments. This time, Gordon Solie is standing by with one of the members of the Varsity Club: Mike Rotundo.]

Gordon Solie

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Gordon Solie backstage here with Mike Rotundo. Mike, you will be meeting a former member of your Varsity Club: Steve Williams at Fall Brawl. Do you have any comments as we are little more than a week away from that encounter?"

Mike Rotundo

"I would think that someone with your high esteem amongst everyone back here would be smarter than that, Gordon. I am not going to be meeting Steve Williams. I am going to be destroying him. You see, he is an Oklahoma graduate. Everyone knows that the University of Oklahoma only produces losers. Unlike the great wrestling school of University of Syracuse. You see, Gordon, at Fall Brawl, I am going to prove that Orange always wins out."

[Mike smiles and gives a confident laugh and we are taken back up to the ring.]

Cactus Jack vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

[Missy Hyatt comes out for the second time this evening, this time accompanying Eddie Gilbert, who gets a decent crowd response. Eddie is taking on the vile and hated Cactus Jack. Eddie keeps Cactus inside the ring for the first few minutes, bringing him down with some pure wrestling takedowns. He gets an early one count and Jim Ross points out that Eddie has been working with Sting and Ric Flair in recent weeks. Eddie takes down Cactus with a body slam and then a leaping stomp. Cactus pushes things outside the ring and rams Eddie's head into the guardrail to boos from the crowd. Cactus climbs up on the apron and leaps -- flying double axehandle! The crowd boos and Missy tries to step over and check on Eddie but Cactus begins chasing her! Missy takes off running, sliding in the ring and then back out. Cactus is taken down with a clothesline by Eddie Gilbert in the middle of the ring. Eddie makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout!]

[...Gilbert pulls Jack up and sends him into the corner. Gilbert climbs up and begins raining down punches on Jack's head! The crowd counts along and it reaches ten before Gilbert drops down and hip tosses Jack out of the corner. Jack gets up quickly and runs to clothesline Gilbert -- ducked! Gilbert takes out the knee of Cactus Jack! Gilbert pulls Jack to the center of the ring -- Figure 4 Leglock -- No! Cactus with a roll up: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! Cactus gets to his feet first and pulls Gilbert up. He sends 'Hotstuff' toward the corner -- reversed! Cactus hits chest-first into the corner. Gilbert rolls him up: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert (Via Pinfall @ 10:59)

NWA United States Title Match

Lex Luger defends vs. Junkyard Dog

[it's main event time here on World Championship Wrestling and what a main event we have in store for you. It's an NWA United States title defense as Lex Luger defends the belt against the fan favorite Junkyard Dog. The two men met in the center of the ring to start the match and JYD absorbed a punch from Luger! JYD grabbed Luger -- Headbutt! Luger fell to the mat and then rolled to the outside. The stalling tactics were used early and often by Luger, much to the dismay of the fans here at ringside and watching at home. After about five minutes, Luger gained control inside the ring with a rake of the eyes and brought JYD back into the corner. He threw right hands, punching JYD in the corner. A kneelift to the solar plexus and then a picture perfect vertical suplex from the United States Champion. Luger posed to boos from the crowd who really don't seem to like the Champ. Luger dropped down into a cover: 1 -- Kickout!]

[Luger picked up JYD and tossed him in the corner again. He threw punches and then whipped him across -- reversed! Luger hit the corner and came running out -- back body drop by the Dog! Luger crawled into the corner and began calling for a timeout! There are no timeouts inside the squared circle, Lex! JYD came over quickly and grabbed the arms of Luger -- rapid fire headbutts! JYD grabbed a staggering Lex Luger -- body slam! The crowd really gets into it as they thought that JYD was going to go for the Thump Powerslam. JYD picked up Luger again and raised him up on his shoulder! He is going for the Thump! Luger grabs the top rope! JYD tries to pull Luger away from the top rope. Luger's body swings around and hits referee Nick Patrick! Nick Patrick falls to the mat and JYD releases Lex Luger to go check on the referee.]

[As JYD checks on referee Nick Patrick, Lex Luger slides out of the ring and moves around grabbing up a chair from ringside! Luger slides inside the ring and waits for JYD to get up. JYD slowly rises and turns -- KEE-RACK! Luger floors JYD with the chair! Luger slides the chair out of the ring and pulls JYD up. He props him up some and then bounces off the ropes -- Running Forearm! Luger makes a quick cover as the referee looks over: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Lex Luger (Via Pinfall @ 20:14)

Match Rating: B

[The fans boo the ending as Luger cheated to win here. However, the boos only get louder when Luger gets up and puts the boots to JYD! He lifts JYD onto his shoulders -- Human Torture Rack! What a feat of strength by Lex Luger! But the match is over, as is evident by the sound of the bell. But who is that coming down to ringside?]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/rickysteamboat2.jpg

[it's Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat! The Dragon hits the ring and Luger drops JYD, exiting stage right! Steamboat stares down Luger from inside the ring as Luger grabs the United States title belt and holds it up to boos from the crowd! Luger and Steamboat WILL meet again. But that's all we have for you tonight. We'll see you Wednesday night for Fall Brawl!]
