UFC 2001: Zuffa Purchase

Recommended Posts

The new sport of mixed martial arts has been trying to break into mainstream. But constant pressures have forced SEG to sell their company the Ultimate Fighting Championship to two brothers, Lorenzo Feritta and Frank Feritta.

As of January 1, 2001 they installed their friend Dana White as the UFC President and I was given the task of match maker and day-to-day operations.

The mandate of the company is bring the company back to PPV and to profitability.

I started with a lucky dip.

Anderson Silva (185) vs. Lance Gibson (205)

Antonio McKee (170) vs. Tiki Ghosn (170)

Frank Trigg (185) vs. Dennis Hallman (185)

- Frank Trigg has been talking a lot of trash saying that Hallman cannot stop his takedowns. It will be interesting to see if he can back up the talk.

Match #1: Frank Trigg vs. Dennis Hallman

Round 1: Hallman quickly circles for a jab but Trigg quickly shoots for the takedown and he succeed. Hallman succeeds in pulling guard and Trigg for the first few moments basically holds the position. Trigg passed into half guard. Trigg continues to move into mount. He mounts Hallman and locks in an armbar attempt. It’s too much for Hallman as he taps.

Official Result: 'Twinkle Toes' Frank Trigg defeats 'Superman' Dennis Hallman (Submission (Armbar) in 4:18 of round 1). The match was rated as being Decent.

Statistical analysis

- No punches thrown by Trigg

- No punches landed by Hallman

Match #2: Antonio McKee vs. Tiki Ghosn

Round 1: Not a lot of action in the first ½ of the round. They clinched once but were broken up. Finally with two minutes left, McKee scores a takedown. McKee eventually gets to a mount and goes for an armbar but as he locks in the round ends. 10-9 McKee.

Round 2: They end up with little action in the early going. They clinch again and McKee lifts him up in a Greco roman slam! Nothing comes from that as Tiki has good defense, eventually they are stood back up. 10-9 McKee.

Round 3: Tiki finally starts to press the action throwing a lot of strikes, but McKee blocks and gets out of the way, Tiki continued to press the action and throw a big overhand right that was blocked. 10-9 Ghosn.

Judges score the fight 30-27 and 29-28 (2) for Antonio McKee

Official Result: 'Mandingo' Antonio McKee defeats Tiki Ghosn (Unanimous Decision in 5:00 of round 3). The match was rated as being Very Poor.

Match #3: Anderson Silva vs. Lance Gibson

Round 1: Silva quickly starts with a jab right cross combo and then another jab. After slipping past a jab, Silva hits a big leg kick to the left thigh. Silva hits a three strike combo and forces him up against the cage. Big strikes from Silva and Gibson falls to the mat, but that doesn’t stop the onslaught! The referee jumps in for the save.

Official Result: Anderson 'The Spider' Silva defeats 'Fearless' Lance Gibson (TKO (Strikes) in 2:44 of round 1). The match was rated as being Great.

Match #4: Ricco Rodriquez vs. Matt Lindland

Round 1: The commentators discuss the large weight advantage to Ricco in the bout and wonder if Lindland sound be fighting at 205. Not a lot of action as they trade jabs. Ricco misses a few strikes and Lindland is able to counter nicely. Ricco then takes Lindland down! Ricco moves to side control and knees Lindland in the side. He looks for the mount. He mounts him but time expires. The late rally I give it to Ricco 10-9.

Round 2: Not much action in the beginning as they box a bit, Ricco goes for the takedown but Lindland stops it and Ricco eats a right for his trouble. They clinch up and Ricco tries to slam Lindland but to no avail. Lindland hits a few jabs. The round ends. Not much to score on but 10-9 Lindland.

Round 3: We hear the corner telling Lindland to hit Ricco with everything he has. Ricco presses with strikes but Lindland avoids and counters with jabs scoring points. They continue to trade jabs and at the end of the round Ricco hits a takedown! That may have won the fight. Ricco 10-9 in my books.

All three judges score the fight 29-28 for Matt Lindland! The fans boo believing Ricco was robbed! The commentators call this judging an absolute disgrace!

(OCC: I didn’t think it was that outlandish. Ricco has two takedowns and not much else. Lindland landed more strikes)

Official Result: Matt 'The Law' Lindland defeats 'Suave' Ricco Rodriguez (Unanimous Decision in 5:00 of round 3). The match was rated as being Average.

Hoffman tries a guillotine but can’t get it and round ends. 10-9 Williams

Round 2: The commentators remark that Williams looks really tired. Hoffman worked the jab and Williams kept trying to push him up against the cage but Hoffman is the fresher fighter and stops him. Williams goes for a big KO punch but Hoffman moves and counters with crisp jabs. Hoffman throws a flurry but they are covered up. Hoffman hits a couple of strikes at the end of the round. 10-9 Hoffman.

Round 3: Williams is tired and jabs. He misses a left and Hoffman counters with a barrage of rights and Williams can only cover up! Williams collapses, hurt and Hoffman continues to pound. Hoffman is pulled away and he wins it! TKO

Liddell hits a big strike to the body and Sinosic goes for another takedown and SPRAWL. Liddell fires a right hand right on the button! Sinosic goes down immediately but recovers before Chuck could pounce. 10-9 Liddell

Round 2: Sinosic throws a strike and misses and counter with a huge head kick and Sinosic goes down. He follows him to the ground. No much action as both try for position. They stand them up and Sinosic goes for the takedown but Liddell sprawls again. Round ends, 10-9 Liddell.

Round 3: Both men look tired. Sinosic attempts two takedowns and fails. The third attempt is blocked. Liddell hits some rights as Sinosic is on his knees and Liddell transfers to the back and pounds away. Liddell goes for a RNC but cant get it. Liddell 10-9

Match #2: Maurice Smith (+190) vs. Ibragim Magomedov (-250)

Round 2: Smith’s corner is telling him to use his counter striking. IM goes for a leg and tries a kneebar but Mo defends it well. IM is in Mo’s guard and throws some punches that are dealt with. Mo backs to the cage and gets up still in a clinch and IM knees the thigh. Mo tightens the clinch as IM hits some short shots to the body. Mo uses dirty boxing before they separate. Tough to call 10-9 IM.

UFC 33: Ortiz vs. Lindland

Pre-match hype

Tito Ortiz, the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion has been hyping his title defense against Matt Lindland. He taunted Lindland extensively calling him over-rated and a sucker for believing his own hype. It is going to be interesting.

Round 2: Silva’s corner is telling him to stand and trade with Menne. Silva moves out of the way of Menne’s jabs and continually kicks the body. Not a ton of action as Menne continues to try and press the issue in the fight, but Silva is definitely the quicker fighter and counters easily. 10-9 Silva.

Round 3: They get into a clinch and Menne hits some strikes to the head as Silva is looking very tired out there. They are still in the clinch and Menne continues to use some dirty boxing to inflict punishment. Silva tries for a kick but Menne counters with a jab. Silva hits a nice kick to the shin but when Menne goes for a jab Silva counters with a sharp punch to the face. 10-9 Silva.
