UFC 41: Couture vs. Jackson

UFC Heavyweight Championship Match

Randy Couture © vs. Quinton 'Rampage' Jackson.

In what could possibly be one of the best possible matches of 2002. Randy Couture is the 4th best Heavyweight on the planet and #15 in the P4P in the world. Quinton Jackson, who has fought at 205 decided to fight in the heavyweight divison after struggling with his weight in Pride. He has one three fights since 2001. The key to this matchup will be whether Couture can get Jackson to the mat. Randy has had three straight title defenses and the key was getting the fight to the ground. If Jackson stays on his feet he should be able to control, but on the ground, Couture is a machine.

Co Feature

Dan Henderson vs. Oleg Taktarov

One of Randy Couture's teammates, Dan Henderson has also moved from Pride to the UFC. He made a statement in his first match by knocking Elvis Sinosic out in the first round. Oleg is a tough fighter who once won the UFC 6 tournament. He is coming off a loss against Matt Lindland and if Henderson is smart he will come in using the same gameplan as Lindland. This should be a war.

Frank Mir vs. Kevin Randleman

Mir and Randleman is a classic match of wrestler against grappler. Randleman had a tough time against Nogueira so expect Mir to use the same gameplan take the fight to the ground and go for a limb. Randleman will have to stay on his feet where I think he has the advantage

Kenneth Alexander vs. Joe Stevenson

Two lightweights make their promotional debut. Joe comes in riding a winning streak in the local shows and Alexander will be a tough foe. Joe will want this fight on the ground but Alexander is strong in muay thai so expect him to clinch and keep the fight on the feet.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Bobby Hoffman

Big Nog had a great debut submitting Randleman, a man Hoffman lost too. But no MMA math here as Hoffman notched a nice win over Ricco Rodriquez and holds a win over Pete Williams. Nog is on a two fight win streak and his ability on the ground will be the difference.

Robbie Lawler vs. Jason Lambert

Robbie Lawler came into the UFC with a big TKO win over David Menne. It was an impressive debut. On the other side Lambert had a tough debut, not making weight and getting subbed by Evan Tanner. It was a tough debut and Lawler will look to make it two in a row for Lambert.

Murila Rua vs. David Menne

Rua is the #4 Middleweight in the world and a win over Menne could put him in line for a shot at Anderson Silva. Rua destroyed Hallman in his UFC debut after beating Rodrigo Gracie in Pride. Menne has been up and down losing to Silva, beating Fryklund and losing to Lawler. A win puts him back in the mix and maybe a rematch with lawler.

Elvis Sinosic vs. Jason Brilz

Both men have had a tough go and this could be a loser leaves UFC. Both men will look for the takedown.

UFC 42: Serra vs. Hughes

Match #1: Mark Hughes (+190) vs. Matt Lindland (-240)

Round 1: Lindland, much like most of his fights he will try and take the fight to the ground. After circling and trying to setup the takedown he gets it with two minutes left in the round. Lindland smothers him for the win in the round.

Round 2: Lindland sidesteps a jab and then hits a barrage of counter strikes. They clinch and Lindland goes for the takedown but doesn’t get it. He then gets underhooks and takes Hughes down again. Lindland moves to side control and looks to mount. Too easy to get to mount and goes for an armbar but it is well defended. Lindland wins the round.

Round 3: Hughes again tries to strike with Lindland and Lindland wants none of it and takes him to the ground again. He gains side control and sinks in an arm triangle. Somehow Hughes is able to get out. Lindland throws strikes from side control as the round ends.

All three judges have scored it 30-27.

Matt Lindland wins by unanimous decision!

Official Result: Matt 'The Law' Lindland defeats Mark Hughes (Unanimous Decision in 5:00 of round 3). The match was rated as being Average.

Match #2: Alessio Sakara (+400) vs. Phil Baroni (-510)

Round 1: This match was put together under short notice as Kurt Angle was injured and his fight with van Arsdale was moved to UFC 43. Baroni quickly hits a kick to the ribs. Baroni continues to circle looking to counter and hits a nice left. The round ends, not a lot of action. 10-9 Baroni.

Round 2: Sakara counters a flurry of punches with a jab. The crowd is booing the round as both men continue to circle and clinch up and some small strikes are landed by Sakara. The round ends with boos for the crowd. I guess Sakara takes it.

Round 3: Baroni fails to land a flurry but Sakara counters with a jab. Baroni presses the issue but Sakara counters with a left. Baroni dodges a strike and connects with a series of strikes to the head. Sakara goes for a left jab that is countered by a big right the knocks Sakara out!!!

Official Result: 'The New York Bad Ass' Phil Baroni defeats Alessio 'Legionarius' Sakara (Knock Out (Punch) in 2:42 of round 3). The match was rated as being Poor.

Match #3: Frank Trigg (-400) vs. Ricardo Almeida (+310)

Round 1: They clinch up and Trigg goes for a takedown but Almeida blocks it. Trigg goes for another takedown but he can’t get it. Trigg goes for a muay thai clinch and gets it. From the clinch he hits a knee to the side of the head and its enough to knock Almeida out!!!

Official Result: 'Twinkle Toes' Frank Trigg defeats 'Cachorrao' Ricardo Almeida (Knock Out (Knee) in 3:21 of round 1). The match was rated as being Good.

Match #4: Mirko Filipovic (-870) vs. Andrei Arlovski (+690)

Round 1: Cro Cop counters an errand jab with several big punches pushes AA up against the cage. Cro Cop senses blood and continues to pound until AA collapses and CC finishes it!

Official Result: Mirko 'Cro Cop' Filipovic defeats Andrei 'The Pitbull' Arlovski (TKO (Strikes) in 0:39 of round 1). The match was rated as being Good.

Match #5: Duane Ludwig (+160) vs. Caol Uno (-210)

Round 1: Uno’s first fight since losing his title to BJ Penn. He catches a body kick and takes Ludwig down to the mat. Uno gains side control easily. Uno goes for an Americana, but Ludwig stops it. Uno goes for an armbar and gets it and it’s deep but somehow Ludwig gets out of it. Uno rolls and takes Ludwig’s back. He gets the RNC but he can’t get Ludwig to tap before the round ends. 10-9 Uno.

Round 2: Ludwig has to stay on his feet. Ludwig gets some nice strikes on the feet and this round is able to stuff three of Uno’s takedowns. Ludwig wins the round by getting the better of the striking.

Round 3: I can’t tell what Uno’s corner men are telling him, but I think its safe to say he wants the fight on the ground. Uno takes him down with a Greco-roman throw. He throws some elbows but Ludwig deals with them. Uno gets to side control and looks for a kimura. This time there is no escape for Ludwig and Uno gets back on the winning track.

Official Result: 'Uno Shoten' Caol Uno defeats 'Bang' Duane Ludwig (Submission (Kimura) in 3:48 of round 3). The match was rated as being Good.

Match #6: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (-230) vs. Sean Sherk (+180)

Round 1: Sherk quickly avoids some strikes and goes for the takedown and he gets it. Sherk quickly grabs an arm and goes for a kimura! He has it and Pretty Boy Mayweather taps out!

Official Result: 'The Muscle Shark' Sean Sherk defeats 'Pretty Boy' Floyd Mayweather Jr. (Submission (Kimura) in 2:01 of round 1). The match was rated as being Great.

Match #7: Royce Gracie (-820) vs. Kazuo Misaki (+650)

Co-Feature

Round 1: Gracie is back! Winner of three of the first four UFC tournaments. Gracie uses some kicks and goes for the takedown and gets it. Gracie gains side control. He gets an armbar! Misaki somehow gets out. He gets another armbar but Misaki is saved by the bell. All Gracie.

Round 2: Gracie quickly goes for a takedown but Misaki stops him. Misaki is keeping him at bay with his jab. They clinch up against the cage and Gracie secures the takedown. Gracie gets a guillotine and its over.

Official Result: Royce Gracie defeats 'Grabaka Hitman' Kazuo Misaki (Submission (Guillotine) in 4:51 of round 2). The match was rated as being Average.

Match #8: Matt Serra © (-200) vs. Matt Hughes (+150)

UFC Welterweight Championship Bout

Round 1: Serra finds himself pulled into a wrestling match and Hughes goes for the takedown but Serra stops him. Serra then reverses fortunes and gets the takedown. Hughes tries to sweep but he can’t. He then goes for a guillotine from the bottom but Serra gets his head out of there. Serra is trying to move from half guard to side control but Hughes’ defense is very strong. Hughes goes for another guillotine but Serra blocks it. Serra continues to try and improve position but Hughes’ defense is too strong and the round ends. Serra takes it with the takedown.

Round 2: Hughes again looks for the takedown but Serra stops him and gains control of the wrestling. Hughes uses some dirty boxing to gain control and go for another takedown. Serra doesn’t allow himself to be takedown down. Serra goes for a takedown but can’t get it but does manage to push Hughes against the cage. Hughes reverses the position and unloads with short strikes to the body. He ends the round pounding the body. 10-9 Hughes.

Round 3: Hughes tried to use his strikes to setup the takedown but Serra countered very well and was able to control the exchange on the feet. Hughes did make an attempt near the end of the round for a take down but Serra stuffed it and wins the round 10-9 Serra.

Round 4: Hughes again goes for the take down but Serra is able to stop it. Hughes strieks with the jab and constantly goes for the takedown and Serra’s takedown defense is epic. However the round ends and it goes to Hughes. 10-9. I have it all even after 4.

Round 5: Hughes kicks him in the leg and goes for a takedown but once again he can’t get it. Serra goes for a jab but Hughes counters with a series of lefts to the head. Hughes shoots for the takedown but Serra avoids it. Hughes fakes a takedown and Serra goes into sprawl but as he does that Hughes hits him with rights and lefts to the head before Serra can cover up. Once more takedown attempt is stuffed and the round ends. 10-9 Hughes.

The official scores are being reported now.

Judge #1 scores the contest as 48-47 to Hughes.

Judge #2 gives a score of 48-47 in favour of Serra.

Judge #3 scores the contest as 48-47 to Hughes.

The winner, by split decision, is Matt Hughes!

Serra has been robbed blind by the judges there in my opinion! (OOC note: The commentators gave three rounds to Hughes)

Official Result: Matt Hughes defeats 'The Terror' Matt Serra (Split Decision in 5:00 of round 5). The match was rated as being Abysmal.

Fight of the Night: Sean Sherk vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Frank Trigg called out Royce Gracie!
