NWA 1989: What? This Again?

Recommended Posts

NWA WORLDWIDE*

Saturday Week 4 September 1989

Cactus Jack vs. Ranger Ross

jobber

Bill Irwin and Scott Hall vs. Midnight Express

Named team over random pairing

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Jason Knight

Squash

Al Perez vs. Steve Williams

Williams is more important

Non Title: The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Dynamic Dudes

Dynamic Dudes just lost to Samoans so I don´t see the mgoing over tag champs even in non-title match.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 4 September 1989

Cactus Jack vs. Scott Steiner

Close one but Steiner have had more TV time so far.

Varsity Club vs. Dynamic Dudes

Varsity Club has feud going on so they win here

Buzz Sawyer vs. Junkyard Dog

Buzz is pretty much a jobber to me until he proves otherwise

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Road Warrior Animal

I could see this one going either way but Animal is the one who has feud going on

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

Well I was wrong last weak but I stubbornly try again so heels win via cheating.

NWA WORLDWIDE*

Cactus Jack vs. Ranger Ross

Did Ranger Ross beat anybody that even reached midcard?

Bill Irwin and Scott Hall vs. Midnight Express

Skyscrapers feud precludes any thinking about an upset here.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Jason Knight

Ugh. This match barely qualifies for the prestige that is NWA Worldwide.

Al Perez vs. Steve Williams

Williams still have the name recognition.

Non Title: The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Dynamic Dudes

The Dudes are duds.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Cactus Jack vs. Scott Steiner

I think that the introduction of Doom comes during this match.

Varsity Club vs. Dynamic Dudes

Give me Sullivan and Rotundo

Buzz Sawyer vs. Junkyard Dog

Mad Dog is one of the best brawlers in the history of the business.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Road Warrior Animal

The Freebirds doing what they know best, interfering in a match and then beating down their target.

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

Have to keep 2 main event heels strong.

Saturday Week 4 September 1989

Cactus Jack vs. Ranger Ross

Unfortunately, we're only building him up to lose to Steiner on WCW.

Bill Irwin and Scott Hall vs. Midnight Express

Woo Midnights! They're gonna topple Skyscrapers!

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Jason Knight

I predict death.

Al Perez vs. Steve Williams

Al Perez will not even get to have his claim to fame of being the Black Scorpion in this universe.

Non Title: The Fabulous Freebirds vs. Dynamic Dudes

While I do think that if you want, you could in time make something out of Shane Douglas, the Dynamic Dudes are simply Just Jobbers. Piling a lot of matches on Worldwide this week though, even if they are pretty much all squashes.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 4 September 1989

Cactus Jack vs. Scott Steiner

Keeping the Steiners strong isn't a bad thing. Scott is a future World champ long before Cactus gets to be here, if the game goes that long >_>

Varsity Club vs. Dynamic Dudes

See above regarding the Dudes. Food for thought: I'd love to see you break off both of these teams and make a team of Douglas and Rotundo.

Buzz Sawyer vs. Junkyard Dog

Just something to keep him from having low momentum in the VC feud.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Road Warrior Animal

Because he is iron men.

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

Oooo, tough one to call... gonna go with heels to keep things even before Fall Brawl.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 4 September 1989

Cactus Jack vs. Scott Steiner

I'm in two minds on this one - Doomterference could play a factor and Cactus is at the right part of the card for an 'upset' but I reckon Scott will edge it

Varsity Club vs. Dynamic Dudes

No shock here though...

Buzz Sawyer vs. Junkyard Dog

JYD is munching his way through the lower orders - the better the build, the better the rub when he's stopped.

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Road Warrior Animal

And this is why I ended up going for Scott Steiner in the other close to call tag/singles match! Freebirds will play a part here but a loss to Bigelow is not the end of the world for the tag specialist either.

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

I'm calling non-finish as all hell breaks loose to take us into Fall Brawl

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpg

[The show opens with the arrival of the NWA World Heavyweight Champion 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair! The crowd goes wild as Flair enters the ring. He reminds everyone that they are just 24 hours away from Terry Funk and Ric Flair walking that aisle one more time for the NWA World Heavyweight title. But following the match there is going to be one huge celebration and many women are gonna get a chance to ride Space Mountain. Whooooo. Ric got interrupted by the presence of Terry Funk, coming out without Gary Hart presence at his side. Funk called Flair a banana-nosed loser. He said that tonight they are going to get a preview of what is going to happen at Fall Brawl when Terry Funk pins Ric Flair right in the center of the ring. This confrontation was all verbal and both men left and headed to the back.]

Cactus Jack vs. Scott Steiner

[Our opening contest was definitely one that was above average as these two men looked to get wins though neither technically has a signed match at Fall Brawl. Steiner took down Cactus with a Steinerline and an overhead belly-to-belly suplex! Cactus wasn't one to give up though and he came back with a rake of the face and tied Scott Steiner to the tree of woe, hitting him with a running dropkick to the face! Missy provided a bit of a distraction to Cactus. This let Steiner recover. He caught Cactus with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and then sent Cactus to the ropes -- Frankensteiner! He made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Scott Steiner (Via Pinfall @ 9:50)

Match Rating: C+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/woman3.jpg

[As Scott Steiner made the pin, Missy Hyatt was grabbed from behind! It's Woman! Woman began clawing at the face of Missy Hyatt as she yelled for help! Scott exited the ring and came after Woman, who let go of Missy and escaped through the crowd. Scott checked on Missy and helped her to the back.]

[We are taken backstage to the locker room where Eddie Gilbert and Ricky Steamboat are shown talking. Eddie wishes Steamboat good luck on his match at Fall Brawl. Steamboat graciously accepts the well-wishes and tells Eddie that he's going to win the U.S. title in less than 24 hours.]

Match #2

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikerotundo-1.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/kevinsullivan.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/johnnyace.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ShaneDouglas3.jpg

Varsity Club vs. Dynamic Dudes

[An average quality tag team match that several fans used as their bathroom break/concession stand break. Neither team really stepped up and showed a dominance in this match. Rotundo and Sullivan used some mat wrestling to keep the Dynamic Dudes down. Shane Douglas scored a two count on Rotundo after a double dropkick but Sullivan broke things up. Sullivan was tagged in and he hit Douglas with a body slam and a Double Stomp. He made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: Varsity Club (Via Pinfall @ 6:07)

Match Rating: C

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/missyhyatt.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/luger.jpg

[Missy Hyatt is shown backstage getting her injuries looked at by a couple of trainers back there. Lex Luger enters the picture wearing the NWA United States title. Luger flexes for Missy and then tells her he wants to ask her out on a date. She politely declines him but he gets a little more aggressive with his stance and Missy cowers back some from him. Luger sucker-punches the trainer and then walks off angrily.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg

[Another backstage segment. This time Ric Flair and Sting walk up to each other within the hallway. Ric asks Sting where he's been and why he hasn't been returning calls. Sting says he could ask Ric the same thing. Where has he been when the J-Tex Corporation has been attacking the Stinger? Or maybe he's just been sitting back and watching. Ric said he hasn't been watching. That he was held back by security. The two argue for a minute more and then go their seperate ways. Definitely an uneasy alliance right now.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/buzzsawyer.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/JunkYardDog.jpg

Buzz Sawyer vs. Junkyard Dog

[some good hard-hitting wrestling in this one but the crowd was only a little into the match itself. Buzz Sawyer tried to draw them in by bringing JYD outside the ring and ramming him head-first into the guardrail. Buzz yelled at some of the audience members, riling up some people in the front row. Back inside the ring, JYD caught Buzz with a headbutt and started to rally crowd support with barks going throughout the crowd. JYD shot Buzz into the ropes and then picked him up, raising him on his shoulder -- Big Thump! The running powerslam! JYD makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Junkyard Dog (Via Pinfall @ 6:28)

Match Rating: C+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/mikerotundo-1.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/kevinsullivan.jpg

[The crowd booed as JYD secured the three count but the boos came because The Varsity Club came in the ring and attacked JYD! Kevin Sullivan took down JYD with a clothesline and then began stomping on him along with Mike Rotundo. Rotundo caught JYD with a gutwrench suplex. Then the crowd cheered.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/SteveWilliams2.jpg

['Dr. Death' Steve Williams came running in from the back! Kevin Sullivan was clotheslined over the top rope. Mike Rotundo got caught -- Oklahoma Stampede! Williams checked on his partner, JYD. What a match this should be tomorrow at Fall Brawl!]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/MichaelHayes7-1.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/jimmygarvin-1.jpg

[A pre-taped interview is shown with the NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds. They talk about how Chicago is no match for walking down Bad Street Atlanta Georgia. And that's exactly where the Road Warriors are going to get caught at Fall Brawl. When they meet in that dark alley, the Freebirds are going to take care of business.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/bambambigelow.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/animal3.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/paulellering.jpg

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Road Warrior Animal

[Another hard-hitting contest here on World Championship Wrestling. Both men are adept at brawling and that is what we saw early and often in this contest. The hard-hitting didn't just stop inside the ring. The two men brawled outside the ring as well with Bigelow ramming Animal into the ring post! Bigelow rolled Animal back into the ring and headed to the top turnbuckle -- Diving Headbutt -- MISSED! Animal rolled out of the way and Bigelow hit head-first on the mat! Animal showed his strength by lifting Bigelow up in a military press and slamming him down to the mat! He sent Bigelow to the ropes -- powerslam! Animal climbed the turnbuckles, something odd to see him doing -- Flying Shoulder Tackle! Animal made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Road Warrior Animal (Via Pinfall @ 7:55)

Match Rating: C+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/NWA-1.jpg

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/terryfunk2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/greatmuta.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/garyhart.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/ricflairc.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg

Terry Funk and The Great Muta vs. Ric Flair and Sting

[Our main event of the evening and what a main event it is as four of the top performers in our business step in the ring to do their craft. The matchup was a pretty back and forth contest in the early-goings. Though there was obviously some arguments between Flair and Sting from their argument early on. A little miscommunication led to Funk and Muta having Flair inside the ring and beginning to double up on him. Funk and Muta made swift tags with Muta getting in some karate style kicks on Flair and Funk focusing his attention on the leg and knee of the Nature Boy. Funk whipped Flair into the turnbuckle and Flair flipped up and over. Muta caught Flair with a stiff savate kick as Flair came running down the apron and Flair fell out of the ring. Sting grabbed Flair from ringside and helped him back into the ring before he could be counted out.]

[Flair continued to take an assault for several more minutes as Funk and Muta kept a fresh man in the ring utilizing tags and switches when the referee was distracted. Funk whipped Flair into the corner and Flair threw some shadow punches before falling face-first down on the mat. Funk grabbed the leg and went for the Funk Spinning Toe Hold! Sting came in and dropped Funk with a one-handed bulldog! The crowd exploded at that but the referee had to pull Sting out of the ring. Both Flair and Funk were crawling toward their corners. Funk made the tag to Muta and Flair made it to Sting!]

[sting came in like a house on fire! He clotheslined down Muta and then took Funk over the top rope with a clothesline! Sting pulled Muta up and sent him to the ropes -- back body drop! Muta lands hard on the mat. Outside the ring, Ric Flair approached Terry Funk and lit up his chest with chops! The referee got distracted trying to break this fight up. Gary Hart slid into the ring and caught Sting with a clip to the knee! The crowd booed! Hart exited the ring and yelled for Muta to get up! Muta climbed the turnbuckles -- Moonsault Press! He connected and turned it into a pinfall as Gary Hart got the referee turned around:]

[...1...

...2...

...3!]

Winners: Terry Funk and The Great Muta (Via Pinfall @ 20:10)

Match Rating: A

[What a main event and what a finish! Who knows how this would have gone were it not for Gary Hart's interference! Funk and Flair battle through the crowd! Funk is throwing punches and Flair is taking him down with chops to the chest! Muta and Sting battle inside the ring! We're out of time! We'll see you at Fall Brawl!]

NWA FALL BRAWL

Sunday Week 4 September 1989

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Fabulous Freebirds defend vs. Road Warriors

I say this mostly because if the Warriors do take the titles, the only team that will get them away from them will be the Skyscrapers. I do think that feud is coming up, but I don't want it to be for the titles.

The Skyscrapers vs. Midnight Express

Because ad loves me... right?

NWA World Television Title Match: Sting defends vs. The Great Muta

I'm going no contest. Sting can drop the belt that way, and won't be losing it, thus keeping him strong to make a run for one of the higher belts.

Varsity Club vs. Steve Williams and Junkyard Dog

Mike Rotundo has a good future in line for himself if you give him the right push, and I think this is a good starting off point for it.

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

With my prediction that Flair retains, Luger keeping this belt keeps it interesting because there's something for the faces to strive for.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Terry Funk

Funker rules, but Ric Flair retains the belt because no one is better to carry the world title, really. At least until Flair turns heel.

Something tells me I'm going to be wrong on a lot of these, but I have logic behind them all.

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Fabulous Freebirds defend vs. Road Warriors

like to see a Warrior title reign - like their early days in GCW or even the AWA, Could have a number of good title feuds with Scrapers, Varsity, rematches with Freebirds, and of course against J-Tex

The Skyscrapers vs. Midnight Express

NWA World Television Title Match: Sting defends vs. The Great Muta

little payback for the tagteam loss

Varsity Club vs. Steve Williams and Junkyard Dog

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Terry Funk

like to see a change in history and keep the Flair face run going longer. I thought the Four Horsemen Fever could have had some legs to it with several heel stables to feud with, instead of the quick and easy kick Sting out angle that was done so quickly. Think it showed desparation and lack of creativity on the bookers of the day.

NWA FALL BRAWL

Sunday Week 4 September 1989

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Fabulous Freebirds defend vs. Road Warriors

I could see this one going either way so I just picked the team that I liked more.

The Skyscrapers vs. Midnight Express

Bigger is better

NWA World Television Title Match: Sting defends vs. The Great Muta

Sting would be ready to go for the main belt so I expect him to drop the TV title soon and Muta is a good choice as next champ.

Varsity Club vs. Steve Williams and Junkyard Dog

Not sure about this one but Williams and JYD has been getting some nice wins lately so I´d say that you continue to built them up.

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

I have already predicted two title changes so I go with Luger retaining here.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Terry Funk

Flair keeps the belt.

NWA World Tag Team Titles Match: The Fabulous Freebirds defend vs. Road Warriors

Maybe this diary will keep me from thinking of Rocco when I think Road Warriors.

The Skyscrapers vs. Midnight Express

The 1st team to face the Road Wariors for the belts.

NWA World Television Title Match: Sting defends vs. The Great Muta

Sting needs to get away from the TV title and shoot for something bigger.

Varsity Club vs. Steve Williams and Junkyard Dog

Varsity Club needs to be built into semi-serious contenders for the Tag titles.

NWA United States Title Match: Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

Steamboat should be waiting for his shot at the World title. The US title would complicate that.

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match: Ric Flair defends vs. Terry Funk

Give me Flair. The Nature Boy pulls it out.
