NWA World Tag Team Titles Match

The Fabulous Freebirds defend vs. Road Warriors

[The show opened with the song 'Iron Man' playing within the background as the Road Warriors made their entrance along with their manager Paul Ellering. Ellering slapped his hand with a Wall-Street Journal as he entered the ring and took in the applause from the fans for his Road Warriors. 'Badstreet U.S.A.' began to play and the crowd booed as the NWA World Tag Team Champions The Fabulous Freebirds came out. Michael Hayes and Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin played up to the boos as they came out to the ring and stepped inside looking across toward their opponents with arrogant smirks on their lips.]

[This was a barely above average tag team bout, which was a little bit of a surprise given the two teams involved. The matchup went back and forth inside the ring between the two teams with both teams using double teams on the other. Road Warrior Animal caught Jimmy Garvin with a powerslam and then looked to his corner. He tagged in Hawk and lifted Garvin on his shoulders -- Doomsday Device! Hawk makes the cover as Animal knocks Hayes off the apron: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Road Warriors (Via Pinfall @ 18:21; Road Warriors win the NWA World Tag Team titles)

[Terry Funk and Gary Hart are in a pre-recorded video shown arriving at the arena. Terry is speaking with Gary and telling him that he doesn't want him at ringside tonight. He wants to prove to the world that he can beat Ric Flair on his own without the help of the J-Tex Corporation. Gary looks worried but agrees to this.]

The Skyscrapers vs. Midnight Express

[The crowd really got into it as the Midnight Express came down to the ring. Bobby Eaton and Stan Lane entered the ring and did a little strut for the crowd and then turned their attention to the entrance ramp for the entrance of their opponents. Sid Vicious and Dan Spivey looked dangerous as they came down with Theodore R. Long yelling at the fans and The Skyscrapers entered the ring and went right after the Midnight Express with forearm smashes.]

[After an initial onslaught of several minutes by The Skyscrapers, the Midnight Express used their heads and got Dan Spivey in the ring by himself. They used their expert tag team acumen to take the advantage on him with quick tags, drawing the fans into the match early and often. Stan Lane clotheslined Spivey and Eaton rolled him up: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! The change came when Theodore R. Long tripped Lane from outside the ring and Sid Vicious was brought in. Sid dominated over both members of the Midnight Express with his power. He took down Eaton with a clothesline that sent him flying off the apron. He grabbed Lane by the throat -- Choke Slam! Sid Vicious made the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: The Skyscrapers (Via Pinfall @ 10:29)

[Woman came out to the ring once it cleared and called out the Steiner Brothers to meet their Doom. The crowd cheered as Rick and Scott came out and began walking toward the ring, waiting to see what Woman meant. They got about halfway down to the ring when Butch Reed and Ron Simmons jumped them from behind! Ron hit Scott against the guardrail and Butch took Rick down with a clothesline to the back of the head. Doom dragged Rick Steiner down to the ring and Woman kicked him between the legs! She slapped him and Doom threw him down to the mat. Woman raised her men's arms and they exited the ring as Scott Steiner slowly entered and checked on his brother.]

NWA World Television Title Match

Sting defends vs. The Great Muta

[The crowd booed as Gary Hart brought his first member of the J-Tex Corporation down to the ring. The Great Muta entered the ring with a pair of nunchaku. Muta put on a show and then blew some green mist up in the air. The crowd booed this as Muta handed the nunchaku to Gary Hart. then the music of Sting hit and the crowd went absolutely wild! Sting high fives the fans for a moment and then hits the ring, handing over his NWA World Television title belt. Sting looks across at Muta and this should be an excellent match.]

[This is a fast-paced match between two flashy wrestlers. The match started out inside the ring but it was quickly moved outside the ring. Muta hit a Moonsault Press outside the ring shocking the crowd! Muta pulled Sting up and rolled him inside the ring. Muta made a quick cover: 1 -- 2 -- Shoulder Up! Sting barely got that shoulder up! Muta used a few kicks to keep Sting off his game. He took down the Stinger with a hard chop to the chest. He sent Sting to the ropes -- tilt-a-whirl backbreaker! Muta pulls Sting to his feet and goes for a body slam but Sting falls behind him! Sting wraps his arms around Muta's waist -- German Suplex! The crowd gets into it here. Sting pulls Muta to his feet and whips him into the corner -- Stinger Spl -- NO! Muta moved out of the way and Sting's head hit the ring post behind the turnbuckle! Sting staggers and Gary Hart climbs on the apron. The referee falls for the distraction as the nunchaku are tossed into the ring. Muta catches Sting with the nunchaku! He heads to the top turnbuckle as Gary Hart drops down -- Moonsault Press! Muta grabs the tights: 1 -- 2 -- 3! What an upset win and a brand new NWA World Television Champion!]

Winner: The Great Muta (Via Pinfall @ 17:50; The Great Muta wins the NWA World Television title)

[The Theme to 2001: A Space Odyssey began to play and the crowd went wild as 'The Nature Boy' and NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair came out and headed right down to the ring. He got on the microphone and spoke about the main event tonight. Tonight, a legend, Terry Funk and the man Ric Flair are gonna walk that aisle and step inside the ring going one on one. Terry, I want you to take a good look in the mirror before you walk that aisle because you are looking at the man who is going to carry the NWA into the '90's as NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Tonight, the limousine is ready, the champagne is on ice and it's all waiting for the victory party for the Nature Boy. Whooooo!]

Match #4

Varsity Club vs. Steve Williams and Junkyard Dog

[The fight song for the University of Syracuse began to play and the crowd booed as the Varsity Club came out in their wrestling singlets. Mike Rotundo and Kevin Sullivan looked focused as they slipped inside the ring and began discussing strategy. The fight song for the University of Oklahoma broke into the song and out came 'Dr. Death' Steve Williams and the JYD Junkyard Dog. The crowd began barking, getting into the JYD character. The bell sounded and the match was on.]

[Mike Rotundo and Steve Williams start things out and we see some great amateur wrestling between the two. Waistlock takedowns and reversals become a normal thing within the early-goings of this match as both men jockey for position. Rotundo turns things first as he takes Dr. Death down with a couple of punches and makes a quick tag to his partner. Rotundo sends Williams to the ropes and then drops down. Williams jumps over and is taken down by a clothesline by Sullivan! The Varsity Club utilize their tag team experience with quick tags and goading JYD into the ring so they can cheat behind the referee's back. The momentum turned when Sullivan was taken down by a clothesline from Dr. Death! Williams crawled toward the corner and made the tag.]

[JYD came in and hit Sullivan with a clothesline! Rotundo was taken down by a clothesline. JYD gave a headbutt to Sullivan and a body slam to Rotundo! JYD sent Sullivan to the ropes -- back body drop! JYD tossed his head back and barked to cheers from the crowd. Williams tagged himself back in and JYD gave him a little look. Sullivan tagged out to Rotundo. Rotundo ducked a clothesline from Williams -- kick to the gut -- butterfly suplex by Rotundo. He flips over and makes the cover, putting his feet on the ropes: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

NWA United States Title Match

Lex Luger defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

[Our semi main event and this is a great one as these two have been feuding for awhile now. Ricky Steamboat lost his cool in one match and got disqualified after hitting Lex Luger with a chair. The challenger Ricky Steamboat comes out first and the Dragon is always a big hit with the fans. Steamboat climbs the turnbuckles and makes the hawaiian love sign before dropping down. He goes over and talks to referee Randy Anderson while focusing his attention on the entrance. 'The Total Package' Lex Luger walks out wearing the NWA United States title around his waist. Luger flexes halfway down the ramp and then continues down to the ring. He steps inside and walks right up to Steamboat, shoving the Dragon!]

[The Dragon responded to the shove with a chop to the chest! Luger threw a forearm! Steamboat with a punch! The two began exchanging blows back and forth with neither man wanting to back down! Luger grabbed Steamboat by the head and rammed him head-first into the turnbuckle. Luger climbed up and began throwing punches! After the third, Steamboat began moving forward and dropped Luger backward, ramming his head on the turnbuckle! Luger staggered around and Steamboat dropped the United States Champion with a dropkick! Steamboat caught Luger with a body slam and Luger rolled out of the ring to catch a breather.]

[Luger paced for a moment or two until he was caught with a springboard crossbody outside the ring by Steamboat! The Dragon played to the crowd and then pulled Luger up. He whipped Luger toward the stairs but Luger reversed! Steamboat hit the stairs hard with his back! Luger interrupted the count and then came over to Steamboat. He lifted Steamboat up and dropped him chest-first on the guardrail! The crowd booed as Luger flexed. Luger grabbed Steamboat and rolled him inside the ring. Luger dropped an elbow on Steamboat inside the ring and made the cover:]

...Shoulder Up!]

[The crowd cheered when Steamboat got that shoulder up! Luger went into a reverse chinlock and worked on wrenching it on Steamboat. The crowd began clapping and stomping their feet. They began working on getting Steamboat back into this. Steamboat worked his way to his feet and twisted around -- belly-to-back suplex! Both men lay on the mat and the referee began his ten count. Both were slow to get up and Luger threw a forearm smash. Steamboat fired back with a chop! Forearm! Chop! Chop! Chop! Steamboat picked up Luger and dropped him with a body slam! He looked to the turnbuckles and then climbed up. He perched atop the turnbuckles and waited for Luger to get to his feet. Steamboat leaped -- RUNNING FOREARM SMASH! Luger nailed Steamboat with the Running Forearm! Luger makes a cover:]

NWA World Heavyweight Title Match

Ric Flair defends vs. Terry Funk

[The crowd rose in boos and a few cheers as the man from the Double Cross Ranch in Amarillo Texas Terry Funk came out. He is the challenger tonight and he has the branding iron in his hand. He slips into the ring doing his best to ignore the crowd as he leans back in the turnbuckle and listens to the sounds of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The crowd rises in cheers and chants of 'Whooooo' as the NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair walks out from the back. He gives a little strut down the aisle and releases a 'Whooooo' before he steps inside the ring. He looks across toward Terry Funk, who makes a 'belt' motion around his waist. Flair shakes his head at that. The belt is lifted in the air by referee Nick Patrick and then placed outside the ring. He calls for the bell and this main event is under way.]

[The match began with a little bit of stalling between both men. Flair would avoid a tie-up and do a little strutting across the ring. Then Funk would avoid the tie-up and do his own strutting across the ring. The first ten minutes were spent with the little bit of stalling before they finally locked up and Funk backed Flair up in the corner. Flair reversed things by placing Funk in the corner and lit up his chest with chops! Three straight chops from Flair and Funk grabbed Flair, turning him around in the corner and threw punches! Funk picked up Flair -- inverted atomic drop! Flair staggered for a moment and then fell face-first onto the mat. Funk dropped down and made the cover: 1 -- Kickout! Funk gave a few stomps to the body of Flair and then rolled him outside the ring. He followed the Nature Boy outside and ran him face-first into the ring post! The crowd booed Funk who just smiled and continued his vicious assault. He grabbed the cord for one of the television cameras and wrapped it around Flair's throat, choking the life out of the Nature Boy! Referee Nick Patrick came outside to break things up, showing some leeway in not DQing Funk right away. Funk rolled Flair back into the ring and made a cover:]

...2...

...Shoulder Up!]

[Flair got his shoulder up at the very last moment before a three count could be registered! Funk pulled Flair to his feet and whipped him hard into the turnbuckle. Funk followed Flair in -- high knee -- Flair moved! Funk hit his knee on the turnbuckle and then grabbed it in pain! Flair drops down and takes out the knee of Funk from behind, releasing a Whoooo that gets echoed by the crowd. Flair gets up and grabs the leg giving it a hard yank and Funk yells out in pain. Flair places several boots to the back of the knee and then drags it over on top of the bottom rope. He leaps up and comes down on the knee. Funk grabs it, twisting and writhing on the mat. Flair pulls Funk up -- snap mare takedown. Flair bounces off the ropes -- running knee drop! The Nature Boy releases another Whoooo that is echoed again. Flair makes the cover:]

[...1...

...2...

...Kickout!]

[Terry Funk kicked out hard of that Ric Flair pinfall attempt, showing that he still has some gas left. Flair pulls Funk up and hooks him -- delayed vertical suplex! Funk hits the mat hard and Flair gets to his feet. He exits the ring, reaching in and grabbing Funk by the leg. He raises it up and brings his knee crashing down on the edge of the apron! He pulls Funk out completely and Funk can barely stand on that knee. He goes to whip Funk to the stairs but Funk reverses! Flair's knees catch the stairs and he trips over them, falling to the blue protective mats below. Funk holds onto the ring and limps over. He moves around the steps and rolls Flair back inside. He joins him inside and whips him toward the turnbuckle -- Flair flips up and over the turnbuckles! Flair goes running along the apron but he gets caught by Funk -- Sleeperhold! Funk locks in the sleeper while Flair is outside the ring and Funk is inside the ring! Referee Nick Patrick steps over to break things up. As things are broken up, the referee takes a punch and down he goes! Funk releases the hold and sees the referee down.]

[Funk exits the ring and moves over, grabbing the NWA World Heavyweight title belt! He pushes Flair inside the ring and joins him inside. He raises the belt and brings it smashing over Flair's face! Funk slides the belt away and moves to referee Nick Patrick, working to revive him. Nick Patrick doesn't revive right away so Funk moves back to Flair. He rolls Flair outside the ring onto a table that is set up at ringside. Funk hooks Flair between his legs. He's going for the Texas Piledriver! He lifts Flair up but his knee gives out! He has to release the Nature Boy! Flair brings Funk up and over and down onto the blue protective mats! Flair grabs Funk and rolls him inside the ring. Flair moves Funk to the center of the ring and grabs the legs -- Figure 4! Flair locks in the Figure 4! Referee Nick Patrick starts to come to as Flair cinches the hold in tighter and tighter. Terry Funk is fighting the hold! He's trying to turn the hold over. Flair sits up some so the hold is given more pain. Terry Funk -- gives up! Funk gives up!]

Winner: Ric Flair (Via Submission @ 29:43; Ric Flair retains the NWA World Heavyweight title)

Match Rating: A

[Flair slowly releases the hold and slides back. He uses the turnbuckles to climb to his feet as referee Nick Patrick gets the NWA World Heavyweight title belt and hands it to Ric Flair. Terry Funk slowly begins to pull himself to his feet using the ropes. He looks across toward Ric Flair -- and offers a hand! Could this be? A show of sportsmanship? Flair looks to the hand for a moment -- and then shakes! Funk raises Flair's arm and then turns and limps away, leaving Ric Flair to his moment inside the ring. But Flair is not alone.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/NWA/sting4.jpg

[it's the Stinger! Apparently, Sting has come out here to share in this moment with the Nature Boy. Sting points to Flair and raises his arm. What a way to end the evening. Two great friends celebrating each other's successes in the center of the --

...Oh...

...No....

Sting just turned and clotheslined Flair to the mat! What in the world is going on here? Sting pulls Flair up and sends him into the turnbuckle -- Stinger Splash! Flair, who just wrestled for nearly thirty minutes, falls to the mat. Sting grabs the legs -- Scorpion Deathlock! The crowd turns violent, booing this sudden turn of events! Doug Dillinger and other security team members hit the ring as Sting grabs the ropes for leverage on the Scorpion Deathlock. What in the world has possessed Sting to do this? Sting is left staring at the NWA World Heavyweight title as we fade to black. We'll see you for World Championship Wrestling!]

Will be a damn fine match, but not Scotty's time just yet. Muta won't be THIS transitional a champ.</p>

NWA WORLDWIDE*

The Dragonmaster vs. Ole Anderson

I'll take Ole over Dragonmaster every day of the week.

Dan Spivey vs. Flyin' Brian

A DQ by Spivey and a total beatdown of Brian after the match.

Buzz Sawyer and Dick Slater vs. Midnight Express

Midnights are so much more over.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Scott Hall vs. Steve Williams

I'll predict the upset here.

Cactus Jack vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

Hotstuff was a better wrestler than Cactus Jack.

The Iron Sheik vs. Shane Douglas

Former World Champion vs. a Dynamic Dude

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Terry Funk

Need to keep Funk strong for the 3 way feud for the World title.

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Scott Steiner

Muta wins his first defense of the belt.

I smell upset here!! Sawyer-Slater would be an interesting challenge to the Road Warriors, I'd think they need a few wins over lesser teams to build up, but then again Midnight Express is in a slump and still feeling the effects of thier match with Skyscrapers. Play into the fact that Sawyer was one of Paul Ellering's original Legion of Doom and you could have a winner here. We all know there are not many teams to match the Road Warriors, Sawyer-Slater could serve to give them some defenses in between the major teams. As TME losses mount up, could they be looking to change their style and return to rule-breaking ways?

Eddie's fireball could be the difference -he made a good challenge for Muta as well (fire vs mystic spit)

could be a save by someone like Gilbert to build toward their match?

Saturday Week 1 October 1989

The Dragonmaster vs. Ole Anderson

I can see Ole being used as the bait in a Flair trap - will need a build if Sting's to get anything out of it in game terms.

Dan Spivey vs. Flyin' Brian

Poor Brian is continuing his recent slump - a heel turn could do him wonders

Buzz Sawyer and Dick Slater vs. Midnight Express

A bounceback for the Express in the meantime although they'll be treading water for a while I think maybe a feud with the Freebirds is in the air? I actually like Olympia's reasoning and can definitely see that playing out.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING

Saturday Week 1 October 1989

Scott Hall vs. Steve Williams

A few months of jobbing and then repackaging before Hall can look to rise through the ranks

Cactus Jack vs. 'Hotstuff' Eddie Gilbert

Toss a coin time... Hotstuff to shade it and boost his profile towards the TV title charge

The Iron Sheik vs. Shane Douglas

I smell a humbling. A Sheik win to give him a TV main event against Flair in a week or two and a mini-feud to worry about

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Terry Funk

I can see Funk pairing off with Sting in the short term to give him the rub running into Starrcade, and to recover from the Muta loss - Funk'll need some momentum to do that and Bam Bam doesn't seem to be going anywhere just now

NWA World Television Title Match: The Great Muta defends vs. Scott Steiner

I've never known Angel to hot potato a belt before and I doubt he's going to start now after giving Muta a huge win over Sting. The build will continue but I definitely think that Teddy Long will be a factor here
