Genre: Comedy, Science Fiction

Studio: Studio Pierrot Director: Toshiyuki Katou Source: Manga by Yoshihiro Togashi

Original Broadcast: January-April 2011 Episodes: 13

Plot: Unbeknownst to it’s inhabitants, Earth is home to hundreds of extra-terrestrial species other than it’s own. One such alien who visits Earth, is the prince of the planet Dogura, who after crash landing, forcibly moves in at the apartment of first year high school student Yukitata Tsuitsui (who has been recruited to the school to join it’s Baseball programme). Yukitaka’s life is about to be turned upside, not necessarily because the Prince is from another planet but the fact that Prince Baka has the galactic reputation of being a notorious prankster.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Frenzied comedy series such as Level E usually either have noticeably low budget artwork or a very unique art style- so it comes as a slight surprise that Level E with it’s near enough Bishonen/Bishojo character designs is surprisingly conventional when it comes to the art style displays.

The opening title sequence with it’s neon colouring is a little more stylized than the art and animation of the series itself, but beyond that background art in particular is little more than functional but somehow the series manages to carry off a deceptive elegance.

Music: Opening song Cold Finger Girl, sung by Chiaki Kuriyama- has a really cool and spunky garage rock vibe that does manage to capture Level-E’s spontaneous nature. Curious fact, Kuriyma played the role as Gogo Yubari, the schoolgirl Yakuza bodyguard in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill Volume 1.

Ending theme (Yume) Mugennokanata by ViViD is more energetic rock. It’s a decent song but suffers from not being as striking as the opening track and it might have been nice to see a little more of a stylistic contrast between the opening ending themes, other than both being straight ahead rock.

There is a also an approriately cheesy theme song for the Color Rangers, whilst the next episode previews feature that classic instrument for visitors from outer space- the theremin.

Action: There is a little bit of action here, with one arc featuring a Power Rangers spoof (the afforementioned Color Rangers), but every action sequence is in effect played for laughs, so Level E isn’t the series for thrilling or serious action.

Drama: Level E doesn’t really have a plot, other than various people getting caught up in the various pranks that Prince Baka thinks up. The series is made up of 2 to 3 episode mini-arcs and one off episodes, with a revolving door of supporting characters, the only constant throughout is Prince Baka.

There is the ‘Men In Black’ style thread of the various alien races visiting earth, and throughout it does tease that there is some tension between different aliens- which does give some of the situations a bit of an edge and have you guessing to some degree whether or not it is one of Baka’s pranks.

Comedy: Baka of course means idiot/Stupid in Japanese and the name of the main character reflects what everyone else thinks of the Prince, due to being on the end of his nauseating (for them) pranks. These include baseball playing high school student Yukitata who finds himself playing frustrated straight man to Baka. Long suffering Captain Kraft,Baka’s head bodyguard whose loyalty to the Doguran Royalty clashes with his frustration towards Baka’s aggravating personality and a bunch of elementary kids that find themselves being turned in Power Rangers clones.

Moe/Kawaii: Though Level-E is not a dark and serious show, it’s not cutesy and/or moe either.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): There’s a sprinkling of partial nudity but other than that Level-E is near enough fanservice free.

Analysis: Level E is adapted from a little known, long forgotten mid 90’s manga by Yoshihiro Togashi, more well known for long running shonen Yu Yu Hakusho and Hunter x Hunter. So instantly questions are raised as to why an anime adaptation has suddenly appeared long after the manga had finished, and one that only lasted for 16 chapters at that. Is this is a case of desperately raiding mediocre source material from the scrapheap for inspiration?

I can’t comment on the manga, but the anime adaptation proves itself to be a comedy gold mine, with Prince Baka being a supremely entertaining antagonistic lead. Of course if you were someone on the end of Baka’s pranks, you would feel as frustrated as the various characters on the end of Baka’s ‘trolling’.

Yukitama the baseball playing student serves as a decoy protagonist and perhaps some people will be left frustrated by the curveball of the Men In Black style plot of aliens living among us does not get further expanded on. However what the sci-fi/alien element does is give some credence to how Baka is able to pull off the various pranks that he does.

As great as a characters as Baka is, the rest of the supporting cast don’t really get a chance to develop beyond being the Prince’s proverbial comedy punching bags but in all honesty that matters little and it wisely remains focused on being comedic and eccentric throughout.

That being said Level-E does suffer a slight dip in quality for some episodes during it’s middle portion, after the superb set up with an opening arc and a closing arc that manages to give the series a fitting ending. Level E’s comedy is at it’s strongest when it has a frustrated straight man to rail against Baka and the absurd situation they finds themselves being pulled into, whether it’s Yukitaka or Captain Craft. The elementary school power rangers are hit and miss, with their episodes generally amongst the weakest of the series.

Closing Verdict: Level-E begins with a premise of being like an anime Men In Black, but that’s one of several curveballs thrown throughout a series that keeps you guessing throughout just what it’s a brilliantly annoying main character Prince Baka has in store for his various ‘victims’. It could be a little more consistent, but at it’s best Level-E is a brilliantly funny and clever series.

Is the Dub Any Good?: Funimation have done the dub for this series, with Vic Mignogna in the main role of Prince Baka. I can’t however comment on the dub, other than seeing a short trailer clip, I watched the series on Crunchyroll which is a sub only site.

I have the final episode of Level E on my DVR (I'll probably watch it within the next few days). I personally have found it pretty hit or miss, and would probably give it a 5 or a 6 out of 10, but different strokes and all that. I think you've given those who have not seen it a good idea of what to expect from the series. I do definitely agree with your assessment that the show is strongest when the Prince has Yukitaka or the Captain to play off of, and weakest during the Color Rangers stuff.

On the dub: I think it's solid for the most part, as I usually find to be the case with Funimation. It does feel weird to watch Edward Elric make such an ass of himself, though...<img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I wouldn't be as down on it as you were with the 5 or 6 but I even mentioned in my summary that it was inconsistent, so a7/10 really is a more reflective score on how good a series Level E actually is. When it's good, it's excellent but I'll freely admit at least a quarter of the episodes are mediocre.

From the few clips I have seen of the dub, it looked to be the usual solid stuff from Funimation. I've said it before, but when it comes to English dubs Funimation tend to be the most consistent.....they don't always hit it out the park and do amazing dubs but for the most part they are good.

I tend to find the L.A based dubbing studios such as Bang Zoom! tend to be hit and miss. We've had some really great dubs to come out of the L.A studios such as Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex, Code Geass; but they're also more likely than Funimation to pull out a mediocre dub, such as the dub for Puella Magi.

The Canadian scene, I don't really have much of an opinion on- Death Note was an excellent dub, but then near enough the same actors did an average at best dub with the first series of Shakugan No Shana.

Especially the fight scene where we see (spoiler) Fabiola doing a CHUN LI SPINNING BIRD KICK <img alt=":o" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/redface.png.900245280682ef18c5d82399a93c5827.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Dub has the same cast as the original, at least from the characters we've seen so far (No Balalaika yet). So good news on that front there.

Original Broadcast: April 2002-September 2002 Episodes: 24 (+ 3 recap episodes* & 1 short OVA)

* The first two recap episodes were part of the original broadcast, the final recap only appeared as an OVA.

Notes: CLAMP are an all female collective of mangaka. Chobits also takes place in the same ‘universe’ as two other CLAMP manga that have been adapted into anime, Angelic Layer and Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles. In terms of chronology Chobits falls between the former and the latter. Some characters do appear in more than one series (as a major character in one and then as a minor/guest character in the other) and each story stands alone, so there is no need to watch them in the order they originally written/broadcast.

Plot: Farmboy Hideki Motosuwa moves to Tokyo from Hokkaido, to attend cram school after failing his college entrance exams. Whilst in the big city he notices that everyone has Persocoms- computers designed to look and act like people, leading Hideki to bemoan the fact that he is flat broke to be able to afford one.

However Hideki finds a cute looking female Persocom lying in the trash. When Hideki finally works out how to start her up, all she is able to do is say ‘Chii’ and mimic his movements. Hideki ends up calling the Persocom after the only word she is able to say.

It appears that Chii is a broken Persocom without an operating system, but overtime Hideki gradually finds out that Chii is a very special Persocom, whilst inevitably growing closer and closer to her, as he teaches her everything from scratch.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Chobits came out during the period where Anime was switching over from traditional cell animation. Everything is clean looking with pleasant pastel colours, but compared to the anime around now the background art looks flat. The character designs definitely have that early 2000's look about them, but are pleasant enough to look at and are in keeping with the mood of the show.

Animation quality is generally solid and the series makes good use of face faults during the more comedic scenes. Face faults can enhance the comedy and make scenes stand out when used well, rather than coming across as a cheap trick and Chobits manages to do just that.

About five years ago, Chobits probably wouldn’t have looked too dated but as animators have become more skilled with the digital tools now at their disposal, the depth and quality of background art in particular for standard budget TV anime has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years.

Music: The disco tinged pop of the opener ‘Let Me Be With You’ by Roundtable featuring Nino is incredibly infectious. The closing themes (both sung by the Japanese seiyuu for Chii, Rie Tanaka) admittedly aren’t as memorable but do compliment both halves of the series well. With the closing song for the first half of the series Raison d’etre being more cheerful and upbeat, whilst Ningyo-Hime has a more darker rock-ballad feel to it in keeping with the darker more dramactic tone of Chobits second half.

Chobits also features an excellent background soundtrack, with each piece of music able to compliment the scene that it accompanies, this is particularly evident in the memorable ‘Dark Chiis theme’ a slice of epic techno that really adds a sense of urgency to some of Chobits most powerful scenes.

Action: There’s a little bit of violence but in general Chobits is more of a sci-fi drama, than a sci-fi action series.

Drama: The budding ‘romance’ between Hideki and Chii is at the heart of the story and of course brings up questions both within Hideki and the viewer, whether or not it would be truly viable to fall in love with something which acts human but isn’t. As Hideki’s feelings gradually grow for Chii, she also seems to be developing feelings and their fate seems to be somewhat guided by a series of ‘childrens’ books that Chii takes up reading.

There is also the mystery behind Chii and just how powerful she actually is as a Persocom, this ends up tying in with the romance element of the story and as the mystery becomes unravels, the viewer will begin to wonder if Hideki is getting into an increasingly dangerous situation, if he continues to fall for Chii.

The central couple are supported by a core of supporting characters, who have their own subplots which end up enhancing the story because they have had experiences with persocoms that shape their view of them, whether that be in a positive or negative light- these include Hideki’s landlady Chitose Hibiya, his neighbour and cram school class mate Hiromu Shinbo, their cram school teacher Takako Shimizu, Minoru Kokubunji a wealthy 12 year old genius who and a persocom expert, Hideki’s work colleague Yume Omura and the baker Hiroyasu Ueda.

Comedy: The way Chii often mimics Hideki is both funny and endearing, further comedic situations are mined from Chii’s naivety and lack of common sense, whilst country boy Hideki is also shown to be socially naive and has a habit of talking to himself out loud plus like so many anime protagonists he has the unfortunate knack of ending up in embarrassing situations.

Hideki’s, best friend Shinbo also has a miniature mobile persocom (an equivalent of a laptop) called Sumomo, that has an over-enthusiastic and hyperactive personality, with her antics including leading Hideki and Chii in wake up exercises. It has to be said that Sumomo is going to be one of those characters that you’ll either love or hate.

Moe/Kawaii: Warning! Warning! Chobits is very moe. Seriously if you can’t stand cutesy moe characters, then you’d probably want to give Chobits a very wide birth, because in Chii you have one of the most ‘moe’ characters in the history of anime. Even after she develops a vocabulary beyond saying ‘Chii’ she retains a childlike naivety and tends to refer to herself in the third person.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): There is some nudity and a fair amount of sexual innuendo, for starters Chii’s switch on button, happens to be where her lady parts would be. There are more fanservicey series than this, but the general innuendo means this should really only for older teens and up.

Analysis: Chobits has a very intriguing premise, centred around the possibility of romance developing between a human a machine and it is something that is handled with a good deal of sensitivity as the story progresses.

Thing is the main overarching plot and the dramatic elements of Chobits doesn’t really kick into gear until about half way into the show, by which point a good number of people could have been turned off by the incessant cuteness, with the first half mostly focused on Chii doing cute things. That being said if you don’t think all things Moe is the anime equivalent of demon spawn, then Chii’s antics are very endearing whilst the comedy is admittedly cliched but consistently funny.

Admittedly had Chii not developed beyond saying only ‘Chiii’ then it would have even got old for even for the most ardent defender of cutesy anime. Hideki meanwhile is your stereotypical male protagonist- book dumb, a virgin that is easily ‘turned on’ but awkward around the opposite sex but generally a ‘good egg’. However his interaction with Chii is genuinely heart warming and it is interesting to see the naive country boy Hideki learning the ways of the world, whilst he in turn he teaches and helps Chii grow as a sentient being.

In a way Chobits almost feels like two separate series at times, and the two sides to the same coin are delivered equally well- on one hand you’ve got an endearing comedy, whilst on the other you have an equally intriguing sci-fi drama but it’s such an awkward mix that it doesn’t quite come together.

Had they seeped in the more dramatic/darker elements of the story a little earlier, then perhaps the unique mixture to be found in Chobits would have come together a little better. By the time, Chobits gets down to being more serious it's very likely a number of viewers may have switched off for it being too cutesy and those who liked the care-free first half may end up disappointed by the more though provoking second half.

The subplots of the supporting characters do help to enrich the story, especially in the more drama focused second half, but some of the ‘connections’ do come across as being a little too convenient.

Now I’m not sure if it ends the same in the manga, but the ending though satisfying to a degree, also left me feeling as though the creators lost their bottle in delivering an even more powerful conclusion to the series.

Closing Verdict: All the components that make up Chobits are handled well but a series that mixes together endearing romance, cute comedy, intriguing sci-fi and sensitive drama with a sprinkling of fanservice was always going to be a hard thing to pull together but had it not been for pacing issues then Chobits might have been able to pull this awkward mix off.

Mildly Recommended

Is the Dub Any Good?: Chobits features a very strong dub from Bang Zoom! with Crispin Freeman and Michelle Ruff putting together good performances in the main roles of Hideki and Chii, whilst the likes of Wendee Lee (Shimizu), Steve Blum (Ueda) and Sandy Fox (Kotoko) do equally fantastic work in supporting roles. In fact I would say that everyone here is at least good in their role and whilst I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend watching the English dub over the original Japanese track , I will say it’s at least as good as.

Genre: Comedy, Action

Studio: Gainax Director: Hiroyuki Imaishi Source: Anime Original

Original Broadcast: October -December 2010 Episodes: 13 (+ 1 OVA)*

* The 13 episodes are nearer to twice that, as the format of the series is more like that of American cartoons, with two separate stories for most of the episodes. OVA episode is a compilation of 1-2 min vignettes.

Plot: Badly behaved angels, the Anarchy sisters Panty & Stocking are kicked out of Heaven and sent to Daten City a purgatory between heaven and Hell, that is besieged by ‘ghosts’. Under the guidance of the Reverend Garterbelt, they are tasked with collecting enough coins to earn their way back into Heaven by defeating the ‘ghosts’ with their special powers (which includes turning their lingerie garments into weapons), however will be able to keep their focus, with Panty’s promiscuous ways and Stocking’s sugar addiction.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Panty & Stocking’s main art style is one more commonly associated with western style animation, invoking comparisons to Cartoon Network cartoons of the late 90’s/early 2000’s (most notably the Powderpuff Girls).

There is however some art-shifts away from the Western cartoon style, the ‘transformation sequences’ switch to a more conventional Bishojo style, whilst the disposal of the various ‘ghosts’ throughout the series are real 3D model explosions. One episode set in the neigbouring town of Little Tokyo, has a complete art-shift towards an uglier, realistic style.

Music: The self titled opening track performed by Hoshina Anniversary is short, repetitive and obnoxious- and totally in keeping with the feel of the show. The ending song Fallen Angel by Aimee B is a nice, catchy J-Pop song with a bit of a reggae groove- it’s pleasant but doesn’t necessarily match the content of the show.

The soundtrack composed by Taku Takahashi of Japanese hip hop group M-flo, consists mostly of electronic beats, that blend in well with the energy and mood of the show. A track called Fly Away, that is performed during the stripper pole transformation sequence is particularly striking and sounds just like the sort of thing that would be heard in some sleazy strip club. The insert pop song D City Rock, with a music video parodying various pop artists is fun and energetic.

Action: Panty can turn her panties into a gun, and Stocking can turn her stockings into a sword, so that they can take down the ‘ghosts’..... There is plenty of action here, with plenty of explosions and very much of the over the top and cartoony variety.

Drama: Panty & Stocking pretty much follows a monsters of the week format and there’s really not much more to say about the paper thin plot, other than what has already been said in the synopsis. The story does get a little more meat and continuity added to it from around Episode 6, with the introduction of the Anarchy Sisters, counterparts from Hell the Demon Sisters (Scanty & Kneesocks) and the reveal of a big bad.

The main characters are as shallow as the plot. Panty is a SLUT and has no qualms bragging about it, Stocking dresses like a Goth and is obsessed with sweets, Garterbelt is an African-American priest with an Afro that is implied to be gay and a kiddy fiddler, their sometime sidekick Brief is a geek hopelessly inlove with Panty, whilst their pet ‘dog?’ Chuck is a rip-off of GIR from Invader Zim, that just ‘barks’ his name and gets abused.

Comedy: The comedy in Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is of lewd and crude and highly likely to offend anyone that is a prude. This series takes vulgarity and turns it up to 11 with endless toilet humour and controversial sexual subject matter, obviously designed to elicit a reaction of disgust and/or shock.

Beyond the shock and vulgarity however, there is also plenty of parody humour (especially of western pop culture), for instance one episode is based around a parody of transformers, whilst another features Panty & Stocking in a music video with references to a variety of real life pop stars. There’s even briefly a bit of social commentary randomly thrown in, the aforementioned Little Tokyo episode with the ‘ugly’ art style is based around the day in the life of a typical Japanese salaryman.

Moe/Kawaii: Because of it’s western art-style and main characters with ballsy rather than cutesy personalites, Panty & Stocking will practically have those who dislike ‘moe’ with a passion rejoicing that such a series has dared to come along and fly in the face of the moe trend within anime.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): Apart from the Bishojo transformation sequences, that feature Panty & Stocking writhing around on stripper poles before removing their garments, for a series that features plenty of mentioning of sexual acts, it doesn't actually feature all that much fanservice- it’s pretty much just dirty talk and off screen suggestion. In all honesty though the main art style they had going for here doesn’t really lend itself to fanservice.

Analysis: If there is ever a series to vehemently split opinion amongst the anime fanbase, it’s this series right here. And believe me there are plenty out there who either think this is the most refreshingly awesome thing to happen to anime in recent years or a steaming pile of turd that could only possibly appeal to the lowest common denominator.

The pro-camp, jerk off to the ballsy decision to go with a ‘western’ animation style and shout about how it’s like one big middle finger to all the moe/bishojo shows that tend to saturate the anime market. The anti-camp, feel that the western style animation is a sacrilege and moan about the virtually non existent plot, episodic format, shallow characters and over-reliance on vulgar humour.

So which side is right?

Both are so blind to the faults of their own argument, that both end up being horribly wrong. Now I’m pretty sure when Gainax decided to make this series, they weren’t particularly looking to make some kind of anti-moe statement, they were just looking to do something different and fun....a crudely over the top take on American style cartoons- even down to the half episode format.

The plot and the characters are paper thin, but this is a show that doesn’t really need a deep plot and characters to work, it was never going to be the goal of this type of show and whilst admittedly the show overdoes the toilet humour and perhaps tries too hard at times to be shocking, beneath the endless poop and sex jokes, some sharper more observational humour and some genuinely amusing parodies do manage to seep through. Plus the show rightfully doesn’t take itself seriously at all- with the fight scenes being gloriously over the top.

The series best ‘joke’ is actually saved for last with a WTF? ending, that teases a second season (that thus far has never come). The genius of ending the series in such a way, is that the series is done by Gainax, who are infamous for their messy nonsensical endings and it’s clear that they are having a little rib at themselves.

In all honesty the quality of Panty & Stocking from episode to episode is very hit and miss, actually it’s very hit and miss within the same episode, this is a series that can manage to be awesome and abysmal at the same time. The series highlights being Panty & Stocking first showdown with their Demon Sisters counterparts (the irony is that the Demon Sisters are actually more ‘moral’ than the ‘Angels’) and the aforementioned Transformers spoof. Lowlights would include the first half of the opening episode, that see’s them battle a giant turd and half an episode dedicated to some weird adventures featuring their deformed pet Chuck, which in all honesty is the most pointless character in the series and not even remotely funny.

As for the animation style, different and being original doesn’t necessarily mean better. From my personal standpoint, part of the reason I generally prefer anime to western animation is because in general I prefer the art-styles prevalent in anime.

However I’m not going to condemn Gainax for trying something different either and they actually manage to mimic the cartoon network style pretty well. It’s not something I think should become an overwhelming trend in anime, but it’s always welcoming for different art-styles to be employed and experimented with.

Closing Verdict: Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is neither the greatest thing to happen to anime in recent years nor the worst, as extreme opinion would have you believe. It’s just an anime from a studio trying something different, having some fun by being as vulgar as they possibly can and ending up with a show that in near enough equal measure can be as awesome as the fanboys say and as atrocious as the haters would have you believe.

Mildly Recommended

Is the Dub Any Good?: The content they have to work with might not always be all that great, but one cannot fault Funimation’s English dub of the show, and you can tell they had fun this doing without the performances degenerating into becoming sloppy and unprofessional.

I would go as far to say, that Jamie Marchi as Panty and Monica Rial as Stocking were perfectly cast for the roles. I would also say that this one of those occasions where I would strongly recommend the dub over the sub- the potty mouthed dialogue actually feels more natural coming from the voices of Americans, rather than the original Japanese cast.

Studio: Gonzo Director: Koichi Ahata, Writer: Fumihiko Shimo Source: Anime Original

Original Broadcast: April-September 2004 Episodes: 24 (+ 1 OVA)

Notes: OVA episode (called Burst Angel Infinity) released in 2007-a prequel episode to the main story, it’s just the standard 24 minutes in length and must have been done when they decided to release a complete series box-set of this series.

There was is also a coinciding Manga released round the same time as the anime, that is also a prequel story involving the main protagonists.

Plot: In the near future science involving humans and mechanics has been progressing, technology the underworld has been using for it’s gain, and amidst this Tokyo has become riddled with crime. In response to this up-rise in criminal activity, RAPT (Recently Armed Police of Tokyo) was formed to ruthlessly enforce the peace.

Kyohei Tachibana, a culinary school student who one days dreams of being a patissiere- gets caught up in a shoot out between a silver haired girl and a mechanically enhanced gangster. Needing the money to save up for a trip to France, Kyohei answers an advert to be employed as a personal chef.

He ends up being employed by a band of mercenaries, consisting of four girls- Sei the cool headed leader, the feisty Meg, child genius Amy and finally Jo- who just happens to be the mysterious silver haired girl involved in the back alley shootout.

Working for an international syndicate known as Bailan, the four mercenaries are assigned to investigate a series of cases involving mutated monsters with glowing brains. Who/what is behind these monsters?- Jo couldn’t really care less, all she cares about is kicking ass and making sure that Meg is safe from harm.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Now this is where Burst Angel will garner most praise and attention, because this is a series that came out near enough a decade ago and still manages to stand up in quality to much of today's series. There is some conspicuous CGI with the mechas, but that’s to be expected for a series of this age. The CGI animation is actually very good and for the most part blends in pretty smoothly with the traditional 2D artwork, and the main thing is that the mecha fight set pieces are smoothly animated and are truly outstanding.

The background artwork is beautifully rendered with vivid colours and has real depth in it’s detailing, whilst the character designs are attractive and not at all dated. Overall what you have here is a series so visually attractive that it earns at least some respect for the eye candy alone.

Music: Opening song Loosey by THE STRiPES is one of those so bad it’s good numbers- a Japanese rap song complete with gratutious Engrish. It does end up being very catchy and it’s energy actually prevents it from being a totally horrendous match for the show.

Ending song Under The Sky stand in contrast to the unforgettably silly opener- a not bad but fairly forgettable rock ballad. The song was reworked into an English version for the dub- it’s actually an OK adaptation but feels somewhat needless.

The BGM soundtrack is a unique mix of pumping rock and spaghetti western, that actually manages to match the mood of the show.

Action: Lots of Mecha fights (very well animated Mecha fights at that), lots of explosions and a super athletic protagonist in Jo who shoots up the opposition with a pair of twin Desert Eagles. What’s really cool is that Jo’s mecha (Django) employs the same two guns strategy and fights like an extension of it’s pilot.

Drama: Burst Angel is a semi episodic series with the various cases involving the glowing brains dealt with in single or double episode arcs, though towards the end of the series the main plot begins to come together and moves away from the somewhat ‘monster of the week’ format.

Whilst our heroes are assigned to investigate the glowing brain monsters, there is also the feeling that RAPT aren’t the answer to Tokyo’s problems and that their methods are too controlling- as expected these elements are brought together by the end of the series.

Kyohei serves as a decoy main protagonist (can’t help spoiling things here) for the first episode, and it’s the mysterious silver haired girl Jo that is the series main protagonist. Kyohei is pretty much just the wimpy tag along and his importance to the story diminishes as things get more serious.

Jo is a girl of few words, but with extraordinary fighting capabilities- so extraordinary in fact, you have to wonder if she is actually human. She is however not completely devoid of feeling/emotion and feels a duty to protect Meg, who has a habit of getting herself captured- despite this unfortunate habit she maintains a feisty attitude and cares deeply for Jo- so much so that she probably see’s Jo as more than a friend.

Sei is the older sister/leader/cool head of the group- who sometimes clashes with the more gung-ho Jo, whilst Amy the adult-child genius hacker rounds out the four girl band.

Comedy: Whilst I wouldn’t label Burst Angel a comedy, it does provide plenty of lighter elements. Kyohei’s wimpyness is often played up for somewhat comedic effect, and the semi-light tone is enhanced by a number of quirky supporting characters, these include a transvestite friend of hacker genius Amy, whilst an ‘alternative’ (face piercings and all that) looking guy, features in a running gag of him getting up in the action.

Moe/Kawaii: Whilst this isn’t the darkest and heaviest show (despite the slightly distopian world that is set in), the series isn’t really all that moe/cutesy either. Amy somewhat serves as the ‘Token Mini Moe’ of the series- she’s just cute enough not be too obnoxious as the precocious child and besides her laptop is in the form of a plushie toy.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): Fanservice is fairly regular, without being too in your face- except for the obligatory filler beach episode (well it’s actually a water park this time, same difference). Meg’s regular attire is a slightly stripperish cowgirl outfit, whilst Sei regularly rares outfits that show of underboobs cleavage.

The aforementioned Water Park episode, features the most blatant levels of fanservice, with Sei wearing a particularly revealing swimming costume. It’s also in this episode that the girls (Sei in particular) breast sizes inexplicably level up a few cup sizes.

Analysis: Burst Angel is one of those series that looks good but has a somewhat mediocre plot and plenty of filler. There’s no episode that is particularly bad (even the aforementioned blatant filler of the waterpark episode is watchable) but for the most part the series plods along in a semi-episodic manner with a plethora of filler side stories before the real meat of the story kicks in and when it does kick in, it’s fairly generic and predictable stuff.

The visuals as I’ve already said are worthy of high praise and the fight scenes are often exhilarating but the plot that holds the show together is unable to match the high standards set by the visuals. When I saw that the production studio for this anime was Gonzo, I was not the least bit surprised as it has all the hallmarks of a typical Gonzo anime- Impressive visuals, CGI Mecha’s, action packed fight scenes, mid level fanservice- all there to paper over a shallow generic plot.

The main characters are to their credit fairly likeable and engage you enough to care about their plight- particularly the central ‘couple’ of Jo and Meg. Whilst it is never confirmed that they are more than just close friends, there are subtle, sensitively handled hints throughout. Despite only really coming ‘alive’ when she gets involved in a fight, there is enough humanity to Jo to present her as more than just an emotionless stoic, whilst Meg strikes a nice balance between spunky and vulnerable.

The working relationship behind Jo and Sei is also intriguing, and there is always that slight feeling that Sei could ‘turn’ at some point and that relationship prevents the show from becoming completely predictable. A minor gripe when it comes to Sei- is that she's supposed to be 19 but looks and act's more like she's at least 25- it's certainly not something that hinders the enjoyment of the show though and inexplicably mature teenagers is just a gripe you can level at anime in general.

Again whilst it’s not necessarily a bad thing that the show isn’t one hundred per cent serious all the time, perhaps the fairly light tone in spite of the somewhat distopian scenario does prevent it from reaching it’s full potential. This is summed up in the supporting character of Takane- a loud mouthed bike riding cop from Osaka that wears an outfit resembling a school uniform. Despite the silly attire, she actually serves as a fairly interesting character at the start and you’re unsure if she’ll serve as an ally or a hindrance to the heroes. However once her arc is completed, she regularly returns as a recurring character, where she is near enough reduced to comic relief.

Despite the predictability the story does become more engaging down the final stretch and oddly enough despite complaints that the show may have been paced with previous filler arcs, those filler arcs do somewhat build up an affinity for the main characters before heading into the meaty stuff.

Closing Verdict: Burst Angel is a visually appealing and enjoyable action packed show but one that is lacking depth or that spark to take it to that next level. In that regard it’s comparable to something like Kiddy Grade in half-way delivering on it’s potential- another Gonzo production.

Is the Dub Any Good?: Funimation did the dub for this, and pretty solid it is too. Monica Rial (whose voice is naturally high and squeeky in real life) gets to play against type in the main role of Jo - if I didn’t see the cast list I would have never have guessed it was Rial doing her voice. Equally Colleen Clinkenbeard also gets to play against type, as the character Maria- getting to play sinister and creepy on this occasion.

The Osaka dialect is translated into a Texas one for this show and Caitlin Glass does get to ham it up a bit as loud mouthed Takane.

The likes of Jamie Marchi (Meg) and Greg Ayres (Kyohei) do end up playing to type, but they are safe hands in these type of roles sassy girl (Marchi as Meg), wimpy guy (Ayres as Kyohei).

Of course I'm not implying that you should cater to my tastes but that since you review a larger range of genres there is bound to be a few thing that don't catch my attention an it just happens to be that you reviewed a few of those back to back. I still check out the reviews but since I've haven't watched them or plan to watch them I don't comment on them.

Second reason is that I've been preparing as much as I could this last monthfor college as a Freshman. Haven't had too much time to watch anime apart from a random episode with whatever free time I can make.

About your diary I can't really comment on it snce I don't follow it. I enjoyed your BHOTWG and I like your puro style writeup and all but I'm just not a fan of the ThunderVerse at all. A number grade makes it kind of difficult since you can have decent shows get a higher score simply due to not doing anything wrong compared to a show that does thing more exciting but without the safe structure that the more boring show has.

The other idea would be a 6 phrase system

Must Watch

Almost Perfect

Great

Decent

Bad

Unwatchable

Lastly this is in case you actually make a site you could a multiple score system.

Plot

Animation/Art

Music

Charaterization

other

other

Composite Score

Reviewer Score

This way people could find it easier to find an anime to their liking.
Yeah I like that grading system. Simple to understand and not too negative for fans of the lower graded shows to call you a hater. Of course the shite category will be pretty empty except for a couple of shows.

The show I believe would fit in the X-category would be Dead Leaves. I personally loved the animation style even through the chaotic pacing was a little too much to actually pay attention too. It felt like something to just lean back a enjoy instead of paying attention.

Honestly, I think there is just a general lull in participation on these boards in total.

Not really that surprising when you factor in there hasn't been a recent game release ( TEW 13 coming out end of last year) and its summer.

Also, looking at the TEW boards and this board as well, there are far fewer active diaries and topics than seems usual.

So, most likely you aren't getting the same level of feedback simply because there isn't the same level of traffic going through the boards right now, or if they are, its mostly just skimming occasionally to topics that might be of interest to them. ( I know I am guilty of this. After a good 7-8 years of serious participation on the boards, I am now more of a lurker.)

I completely agree that it feels like two different series at times, but like you, I enjoyed both the lighthearted and serious aspects. I´m not commenting much (if any) on this one simply because I have only watched handful of anime and thus simply don´t have anything to say about the reviews (since I haven´t seen the shows yet) and the ones that I have seen have been reviewed so long time ago that it would feel pretty pointless for me to put my own opinion on them (espesially since I rarely have strong opinions in the first place). :)

That said I have picked plenty of anime series to watch simply because of your reviews including Angel Beats, Sacred Blacksmith, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (currently watching, seen the first 4 episodes so far).

As for the grading system, the current one works well enough for me. After all it just gives general idea to begin with since I seem to have little bit differend taste than what you do. :)

Well I've decided to switch to the new Grading system, because I just feel more comfortable with it. Admittedly the C Grade might cover too big a range, with shows that don't quite make the B Grade (Very good) at the top end and those that just about pull themselves above the D Grade (Mediocre) at the bottom end. But I think people should be able to ascertain where each show stands from the closing verdict for each review.

I am currently editing the old reviews with the new grades, plus I've made a few tweaks to the format.

The Moe section is now Moe/Kawaii and Fanservice is now Adult Content (Fanservice etc) though that segment is mainly to discuss about fanservice titillation, I do also sometimes talk about other content that would keep the series out of reach of a younger audience.

Strengths & Weaknesses is now called Analysis- as I feel one word to describe the segment just looks better, and overall is now Closing Verdict.

The process is also proving useful in editing out typos and spelling mistakes.

@Dragonmack: You do have a point about activity being down in general, and I must admit that when it comes to reading other diaries etc, I also have tended to become more of a lurker, rather than a commentator. So I shouldn't really complain when I'm getting a lack of response to my work.

@Final Countdown: Though of course I am pleased that you understood my sentiment about 'not writing for feedback, but how it can keep you motivated.

Following on from what you said about Chobits. Looking back at some of your previous comments, it seems that in general we have similar taste/expectations when it comes to anime.

@Zergon (not Timber): You're currently watching Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (one of my personal favourites)- are you watching it in chronological order or the original broadcast order. Chronological makes more sense, but the broadcast order is good fun, in being able to piece stuff together.

I think you meant me and not Timber. ;) If not then... well I answer anyway :D

I´m currently watching the first season so that´s original broadcast order, right? Might watch the second season too or at least parts of it depending on how well it can capture my interest (to be honest that second season being the first season with linear order but with new episodes slotted in still confuses me but guess I best to see for myself. :p). I have to say that the first episode (the one where they shoot a movie) was the most random way I have ever seen a show start so far. That said, overall I have liked the show a lot, just watched the fifth episode and noticed that you weren´t kidding when you said that action scenes come rather surprisingly and the action scene was quite shocking (even more so to me since it involved my three favorite characteres from the show).

Genre: Emotional/Psychological Drama, Romance

Studio: Zexcs Director: Hideki Tachibana Source: Visual Novel developed by Makura

Original Broadcast: January-March 2008 Episodes: 12

Plot: Takuma Hirose a high school student suffering with blindness(caused by a childhood trauma) has moved to the countryside to live with his uncle. He meets a Hayami Kohinata a girl, who is treated like a pariah by the rest of the village and consistently bullied at school.

Otoha a spiritual being then grants him eyesight, in order for him to seek to find out the reason behind the animosity towards Hayami and resolve the problems between her and the rest of his classmates. He will of course face great resistance and the dark past that has a hold over the Village, holds connection to his own tragic past.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The art and animation for H2O is unremarkably average. The background art is nice and captures the sleepy yet ever so slightly creepy atmosphere of the village, but never really takes your breath away. Whilst the generic Moe/Bishojo character designs look like they were probably lifted straight from the Visual Novel it was adapted from and plonked straight into the anime. If ever an anime looked like it was blatantly adapted from a visual novel, this would be it.

Music: Opening song 'One Winged Icarus' by Yui Sakakibara, comes replete with folky flute and works with the countryside setting of the series. Ending song 'Kazahane' by Haruka Shimotsuki is a generic 'ethereal' ballad (more flute!)- not particularly memorable or original but in keeping with the mood of the series.

The BGM is fairly minamalisitc, often relying more on background sounds to enhance the mood and atmosphere, otherwise it's plaintive piano with the occasional sung ballad thrown in. The soundtrack isn't outstanding but it does it's job.

Action: There is some violence but it’s not portrayed as thrilling action- it’s all part of the emotional drama.

Drama: The H20 in the title has nothing to do with water, it is a reference to the names of the three main ‘heroines’ in the series.... Bullied Outcast Hayami, her former best friend Hinata ;and the spirit girl Oyama that grants Takuma his eye-sight back.

As it turns out all three girls have a connection with one another that connects with the villages past. We find out why Hayami is despised by the village, especially by a fourth main girl Yui Tabata that leads the bullying towards Hayami at school.

As the series progresses Takuma manages to help resolve the issues between the girls, but as the issues are resolved they continue to face resistance from a village under the influence of the strict and controlling village head/Hinata’s Grandad- who seems determined to make Hayami suffer till the last- to the point that he will reveal the reasons behind the trauma that caused Takuma’s blindness and why Hayami Kohinata is connected to that.

Comedy: For the most part H2O is a tragic melodrama, designed to tug with your emotions but it does also contain a fair amount of comedy. Much of that comedy is of the typical fanservice/harem variety (you know the kind- the main male character, just so happens to accidently fall into one of the girls breasts etc)... Whilst one episode, centred around Otoha just decides to be completely random and briefly turns the show into a magical girl show.

Moe/Kawaii: Big doe eyed girls with emotionally charged back-stories, this anime clearly has Moe intentions. Hayami Kohinata is the ‘woobie’ you’ll want to protect/willing to fight back, whilst the spirit girl Otoha is cheerfully cute.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): There are plenty of series with stronger levels of fanservice but it is there- with the obligatory beach episode and a fair share of accidental fanservice situations, such as panty shots (prevalent in the first episode).....

There’s some bathing nudity and Hinata just happens to be pretty well endowed. One of the supporting girls in the series though, is revealed to be a cross-dresser and in fact a boy, you’ll have a hard time working out who it is though until the reveal.

Analysis: Never before has an anime made me wish I could transported into it, and do illegal acts of extreme violence to the characters. The way Hayami is made to suffer by the entire village for something which is not her fault, will make your blood boil, and in Hinata’s Grandfather you have a villain that will have you begging that he is made to suffer like Hayami only a million times worse- unfortunately the resolution for this evil f**kwit is nowhere near satisfying enough. The villagers that follow this evil f**kwit blindly and the useless teacher that turns a blind eye to the bullying will also piss you off no-end and have you wondering if they’re all too retarded to realise how screwed up things have become in their village- all because of the say-so of one seriously bitter and twisted old man.

You’ll also hate Hinata and Yui at the start of the series too, for the way they treat Hayami- but the series does do a good job of revealing their reasons behind why they acting like they are. Hinata actually turns herself round from being a character you wish would die a horrible death (like the majority of this retarded village) into one of the most sympathetic characters in the series.

Despite the fact that I really HATED a lot of the characters in this series- I realise that’s the point though. Not all anime should be filled with immediately likeable characters- sometimes it’s about playing with your emotions and then giving out a rewarding experience when things get resolved or we find out the reason why certain characters may be acting in a manner that places them in the bad light- and there are times that H2O succeed particularly well at this- as hinted to Hinata’s character development from bitch (with faux nice girl demeanor) to one of the most sympathetic characters in the series is handled very well, whilst Hayami should immediately have your sympathy once you see the crap she has to put up with.

Where H20 fails is with the consistency of pacing and not having enough conviction in being an emotional drama. The opening episode suffers from constant mood whiplash between a blind Takuma fumbling round and falling into clichéd fanservice situations and Hayami being treated like shit.

Here’s the thing with fanservice, I’m not someone who looks down on an anime for having it and I certainly have nothing against anime such as Sekirei (fanservice lead series- which know what they are and aren’t pretending to be something else). It’s when fanservice- seems shoe horned in for no reason, other than just being there, that frustrates me and H2O is one of those shows. It’s like they don’t have enough faith or conviction behind the story that they are telling.

By the time episode 2 comes round, Takuma can see all of a sudden (something which doesn’t even get queried by anyone else in the village), but it does settle down into being an emotional drama (despite the shoe-horning of a beach episode) that gradually gets better as we learn the reasons behind some the unreasonable actions of some of the characters, and by around the half way point, the show seems to be hitting its stride, with what looks to be a major turning point in the story...

And then suddenly out of nowhere we get a random comedy focused episode that seems completely out of sync with the rest of the series. The expected follow up from the episode before then doesn’t happen, It then suddenly switches back to emotionally led drama- with more focus on the reasons behind the trauma behind Takuma’s blindness.

By this point the reasons behind the emotional drama are starting to feel a little too forced, and whilst Takuma acted with reason and could see the wood for the trees for most of the series, it takes just a few words from Old F**kwit- Head Retard of the Village of Extreme Retardation for Takuma to start acting unreasonably/stupid himself. In the end, the whole story just ends up pissing you off, not just several of the characters.

The lightly supernatural element of the series with the spirit girl Otoha, who's appearances serve as a catalyst for Takuma to take action- neither really enhances nor takes away from the series. Otoha herself is one of the more likeable characters but that doesn't take much, when the village is full of idiot's not just one.

Closing Verdict: H20-Footprints in the Sand tries, and at times does achieve the emotional response and sympathy towards the storyline and characters that it is pleading for. But the random pacing, plot-holes and needless fanservice/comedy causes this anime to fall apart.

If you are really into this type of Moe Melodrama and don’t mind random fanservice, then you probably will get some enjoyment out of this show, but I really couldn’t recommend it to anyone else. Then again you might also enjoy this if you're a masochist for watching shows, where you feel like going postal on the majority of the characters.

Avoid

Is the Dub Any Good?: The series was licensed by Kadokawa USA, but Kadokawa shut down it's U.S subsidiary- cancelling the U.S release. Whether this meant, that an English dub was going to be done or not, will never actually be known and at this stage for a mediocre/ largely forgotten Visual Novel adaptation it seems highly unlikely there will ever be one.

I've seen H2O on Crunchyroll, not really my cup of tea. Good to see that you're keeping the level of variety high. I've gone on to watch more than a few shows after reading your reviews. It's tough to get a good idea of what's out there wh en there's just a tiny caption of what might or might not be what the show is about. <img alt=":)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/smile.png.142cfa0a1cd2925c0463c1d00f499df2.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Good stuff bud.

It's like the good anime is more pleasurable to watch (obviously!), but the bad to mediocre stuff is actually more fun to review <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

The DVD purchases I make, are tending to be a bit more random at the moment too, as I'm tending to exchange stuff, rather than buy new at the moment- financial reasons dictate that policy but it's also another good way to ensure that the anime I watch remains random and eclectic.
