Tigerkinney's Anime Reviews

Welcome to Tigerkinney's Anime reviews

I don't pretend to be the oracle when it comes to anime (especially when it comes to the technical aspects such as the quality of the animation itself), but I do have a genuine love for it.

I would say my anime tastes are fairly broad (so it's not going to be reviews of say just Mecha series), only things I'd say I don't really watch are Yaoi (Boys Love- Have no problem with it, just not something I personally desire to watch) , children's anime (mind you those shows don't really see the light of day outside Japan) and long running 'shonen' such as Naruto, Bleach, One Piece etc (Not a snobby thing, I'd just rather spread my anime appreciation to lots of different shows, than watching the same thing over and over again :p)

You won't be seeing any hentai reviews either... there may be a few series that push towards those boundaries and has strong levels of ecchi fanservice (e.g Rin) , but nothing that can be considered to be what basically equates to an animated porno.

Some of my older reviews are in my honest opinion not all that good (roughly around Page 30 of this thread they get significantly better) and some might even be ripe for a total re-review at some point. But maybe I'm being harsh on myself, they were certainly effective enough to get this thread of the ground. :p

Review structure:

Genre: This lists the genre(s) that the anime fits into.

Studio: The anime production studio(s) that produced the anime, Director: The principal director of the anime, Writer: The head screenwriter, Source: This shows whether or not the anime is an original screenplay, or adapted from a manga, light novel, game etc. Where things get a little more complicated in regards to the source material (e.g inspired by but not a direct adapatation) I will add notes.

Original Broadcast: This shows when the anime was originally broadcasted on T.V in Japan, Episodes: This shows the amount of episodes the anime ran for, with OVA episodes in brackets.

For Anime films- Original Broadcast is replaced with the cinema release date in Japan and the episode count is replaced with the running time.

Synopsis: This outline's the main plot of the series, whilst trying to keep any spoiler content to an absolute minimum.

Recommended Viewing Age: This gives a general guide to how suitable the anime will be for younger viewers and outlines any possibly objectionable content to be found in the series. Maturity of course differs amongst individuals, and the viewing age is just a loose guideline, for example it's of course up to you whether or not you feel that your mature 12 year old sibling is OK to watch that ultra violent 18 certificate series :p

Action Level: This gives a guideline, as to how much action can be found in the anime. It's basically there to warn people who aren't keen on slower paced and/or talky anime.

Moe/Kawaii Level: This gives a guideline to the level of cutesy/moe situations and characters to be found in the anime. I don't mind 'moe' myself and aren't ashamed to admit that I like some series that have a heavily 'moe' vibe to them, but I know for anime viewers the whole 'moe' thing is a big turnoff. If you watch a series that I told you was a 'moeblob' fest and you complain about it, don't say I didn't warn you :p

Animation Quality/Art Style: This is a critique on the art style and animation quality to be found in the anime. I will fully admit that I'm not an expert when it comes to animation quality, but I feel like I've watched enough anime now, to give a reasonably informed opinion. Personally I hope people appreciate, my humble viewpoint rather than some animation expert, getting all pernickety over frame rates etc.

Music: This is where I comment on the OP and ED's in the anime, and on the OST soundtrack. For me the music is the least important thing when it comes to judging an anime (story first, then art and animation, then the soundtrack). However well judged openings and endings and a good soundtrack, can help lift a series from good to great.

Plot and Characters: This is where I comment on the themes explored in the anime's plot and give an outline on what to expect from the principal characters, whilst of course keeping any spoilers to a minimum.

Analysis: This is where I give my opinion on what I liked and didn't like the about the anime, and hopefully gives some (whether you agree or disagree) some justification as to why I think the anime is super duper great, a stinker or somewhere in between.

Closing Verdict: Can't be bothered reading the rest of the review, this short paragraph condenses my opinion into just a couple of sentences!

Is The Dub Any Good?: If the series comes with an English dub and I've seen the dub version, I will give my opinion on it. Long time readers of these reviews, will be aware that I don't necessarily always favour the English dub but will know that I have no time for sub only snobs/elitists who declare every dub to be terrible, when that clearly isn't the case and hasn't been for well over a decade. In all honesty whilst not all English dub 'hit it out of the park' most are at the very least passable.

Ratings Guide :

So this is the third grading system I am on. This new rating guide (inspired by a Puroresu reviewer on the internet, that uses the same kind of rating system), still provides the reader with a quick glance rating but isn't as 'exact' as a number or letter grade system.

It's a five tier system, with the tiers being:

Highly Recommended: This doesn't necessarily mean that the anime is flawless but is a series/film I would whole heartily recommend that people at the very least check out, even if it's not usually their cup of tea.

Recommended: Strongly recommended to fans of the genre, and comes with a milder recommendation to those who don't normally like this kind of thing.

Mildly Recommended: Flaws are becoming considerably more noticeable, however viewers who generally like this kind of thing should still get a strong amount of enjoyment from watching the anime.

Mediocre: Not the worst anime, but not exactly good either. Can't really recommend it but if you like this sort of thing, there are worse ways to spend/waste your time.

Avoid: Whether it's a tedious bore of a series/film or hilariously incompetent, these are the anime that have little to nothing redeeming about them.

Genre: Supernatural Fantasy, Comedy-Drama

Studio: P.A Works, Director: Seiji Kishi, Writer: Jun Maeda

Source: Anime Original Original Run: November 2009- May 2010/Episodes: 13 (+ 1 OVA)

Notes: There is an accompanying Light Novel/Manga by the same writer Jun Maeda....but rather than the anime being based on these potential source materials, they expand upon the Angel Beats! universe away from the anime itself.

Plot: Average High Schooler Yuzuru Otonashi wakes up one night in the middle of an unfamiliar school, with no memories other than his own name. He meets Yuri Nakamura, a feisty high school girl who just happens to be holding a sniper rifle. If that's not bizarre enough, Yuri then tells Otanashi that he is in fact dead and they are in the afterlife. An afterlife where she is the leader of a guerilla group fighting against fate/god/the student council president they call Tenshi (Angel). Yuri wants Otonashi to join her guerilla group the Afterline Battlefront/Shinda Sekai Sensen (SSS) but Otonashi isn't convinced and wants to hear Tenshi's side of the story....however when he does confront Tenshi, she stabs Otonashi in the heart......

Being dead anyway Otonashi recovers from the 'stabbing' but gradually the reasons behind both the SSS and Tenshi's motivations are revealed, especially when Otonashi himself begins to gradually get his own memories back, which could themselves be the key to ending this never-ending battle he has been thrust into.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The characters are very much in the Moe/Bishojo style (think K-On! or Haruhi as series in a similar style) with the background art up to a good standard. Nothing groundbreaking or spectacular but all in all Angel Beats! was a pleasing series in a visual sense.

The real highlight of the animation was the performances of Girls Dead Monster (an all girl rock band, that serve as a special wing of the SSS), and as much as I like K-ON! (which I will post a review up of a later date) the animation of the musical performances in that are lacking in comparison to the animation that was on show here.

Music: The opening song My Soul, Your Beats is an emotive piano lead track, that really fits the 'heart' of this anime. One episode features a rockier alternate take by Girls Dead Monster....and because it's a well crafted song, it really works in this version too. Girl De-Mo as they are known for short contribute a few insert songs, they have a general indie-rock sound and though in general the songs don't quite reach the ear-worm status of Ho-Kago Tea Time from K-On!....I enjoyed them enough to purchase 'Keep The Beats' the Girls Dead Monster album. Weak link amongst the music is the ending theme, an entirely forgettable ballad.

Action: Angel Beats! is not what you would call an action anime as such, yet there is a fair amount of action scattered throughout the anime. The battle scenes with Tenshi, are themselves pretty unique with the fact that Tenshi can suddenly turn her own hands into various types of knives.

Drama: It probably won't seem like it at the start, but by the end Angel Beats! is one of those series that will tug at your heart-strings, or at least it's supposed to. Much of the plot and character development is dealt with in character flashbacks, explaining why they are stuck where they are in the afterlife and I'm not ashamed to admit that some of these back-stories were actually rather touching and made you truly sympathize with the plight these character find themselves in.

Comedy: You would think reading the synopsis that this series could be a bit on the grim side seeing as it deals with a version of the 'afterlife', but amongst all the dramatic emotion that gradually pours out , there is a consistent vein of comic relief waiting round the corner. The show makes repeated 'light' of the SSS ridiculous schemes in order to defeat 'Angel', with an array of OTT 'death' scenes that result in plenty of physical comedy that is kept fresh by various little twists. If anything Angel Beats! despite the initial set up, has more of a comedic focus at the start, and it's as the series progresses it moves towards the focus being more on the emotional drama.

Particular comedy highlights are the episode, where the SSS try to rig an exam and the OVA episode where everyone has to be really intense for the entire day. The comedy in Angel Beats! is one of it's strongest and most consistent elements

Moe/Kawaii: Bishojo girls with emotional baggage.....yep this series is Moe alright. Lets look at three prime examples, the co-main protagonist Yuki, who on the surface is a feisty Haruhi clone but underneath is vunerable, her nemesis the quiet, demure and fragile Tenshi and Yui (a groupie/eventual band member of Girls Dead Monster), who is loud and obnoxious on the surface but once you see her backstory she becomes 'Moe' incarnate.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): There are Bishojo girls in school uniform, with short skirts but there's not really any fanservice as such, at only 13 episodes (+ 1 OVA) episode long they didn't really have time to pad it out with something like a Beach/Onsen episode (that are often an excuse for fanservice).

Analysis: Co Main Protagonist Yuki Nakamura, starts off as a Haruhi clone- she basically looks like Haruhi with a different hair colour, and she's the 'feisty' leader of a club, the SSS which sounds rather similar to SOS brigade. Then again if you're going to do a clone of a character, why not clone one as awesome as Haruhi, though the main reason I've put this as a Pro and not a con, is that after a while, Yuki does develop a personality of her own and breaks free from being a Haruhi clone...

The series also could have been rather jarring switching between comedy, emotional drama and even a bit of action, but overall it did a pretty good job of blending these elements together. And though the comedy was often enjoyable and the action refreshingly unique, it was the character development leading to a genuinely emotional finale that proved to be the real strength of Angel Beats!

As good as some of the character development was, it wasn't the case for all the characters...for what in the end was something of an over-sized cast for just a 13 episode series. The characters that did have depth, were dealt with rather well but there was a whole plethora of characters I just couldn't care about/weren't developed properly. Also as good a job as they did blending the comedy and drama together, the plot itself was rather jumpy and in the end the series felt 'rushed' and would have benefitted from a longer run of episodes.

Closing Verdict: Charming main characters, consistent comedy and an ending with genuine 'heart warming sentiment' lift Angel Beats! into being a pretty good series, in spite of the rushed plot.

Is The Dub Any Good?: I watched this as the English dub version, and I didn't think it was the greatest dub recording i've heard, but then again I didn't think it so bad, that I had to drop it for the sub. I thought Brittney Karbowski did a good job as the 'feisty' SSS leader Yuki Nakamura and I think out of all the main characters, hers is the performance that needed to be nailed on right for the dub to have worked out OK.

I've seen that listed on Netflix, but i haven't watched it. This review leads me to skip it as it's not the kinda stuff i watch. That's a good thing, i won't waste my time and i get a good review.

Keep posting them. I'll check in from time to time.

But that review was designed to make you, go out and watch it! :p

Fair enough though, I did say in my ratings guide in the opening post, that a 7/10 series is 'good if you like that sort of thing' and it's just nice to know that you're going to be on board with reading these.

Next review will be something, very much different to Angel Beats!

Genre: Supernatural Mystery, Crime Drama, Action, Black Comedy

Studio: Brains Base, Director: Takahiro Omori, Writer/Source: Light Novels by Ryohgo Narita

Original Run: July- November 2007/ Episodes: 13 (+ 3 OVA)

Plot: Baccano! is an action-packed mystery set in 1930's America which involves a pair of insane -yet highly succesful- serial robbers, civil war in the mafia, blood-thirsty cults dressed in white, immortals from the 1700s, and above all, alchemists. Whether taking place in the gold mines of California or the mafia-infested New York, aboard the haunted Flying Pussyfoot in 1932 or a lonely ship at sea in 1711, this fast-paced series links countless characters and a myriad of plots simultaneously under the single name of Baccano, an Italian word meaning "ruckus". With the various plots presented in no particular order and switching back and forth within each episode, Baccano! leaves the viewers to put this story together themselves.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The character designs here are recognisably manga/anime, but lean more towards having a more realistic design to them, in terms of their proportions....a good decision as Moe/Bishojo girls with big eyes and big boobs wouldn't have worked here. In general the animation/art quality is pretty good, being smooth and consistent throughout the series.

Music: Opening song 'Guns and Roses' is a jazzy number, that fits the 1930's prohibtion era that much of the story takes place in, it's not the sort of thing I would feel the urge to download and stick on my i-pod but it does suit the mood of the anime well and works brilliantly with the opening titles, where the multitude of characters are introduced. Unfortunately closing theme 'Calling' is just some dour ballad....which for me doesn't even fit in at all with the general feeling of this series.

Action: Much of the Baccano! cast are involved with some kind of crime family or another, so you would expect to see some action. Thankfully it doesn't disappoint in that aspect, with it's fair share of shoot-outs, knife battles, fist fights etc.....Plenty of violence going on here with this one and it really earns it's 18 (in the UK) certificate as some of the action/violence gets pretty graphic/bloody.

Drama: With a huge cast of characters, Baccano! is a series that see's a whole multitude of people take the 'leading role' , if anything there is no actual lead just twenty or so characters who could perceived to be the lead at any given time during the series. The chaotic plot that jumps between several timelines per episode, means that the series is very much more 'character driven' than 'plot driven' (at least in the traditional sense of having a focused plot that gets you from A to B). It's the decisions and actions made by Baccano's multitude of characters that move the show along, whether those actions are about 'Love', 'Revenge' or purely 'survival'.

Comedy: The main 'comic relief' of the series comes from a pair of dim-witted but lucky thieves named Isaac and Miria. They're at the lighter end of the comedy scale in relation to much of the humour generated by Baccano! as there is a rather strong streak of 'Black' comedy running throughout the show, something that is really brought to the fore by the OTT sociopath Ladd Russo.

Moe/Kawaii: One thing Baccano! definitely is not is cute- There's a few characters that show 'Moe' traits without ever being considered 'Moe Blobs', and one of them is not actually a female as is usually the case, but a young man called Jacuzzi Splot that leads a small time gang of delinquents, that despite being the leader of said gang is 'shy and easily intimidated'. The other character who could be construed as being 'Moe' is the beautiful yet mute assassin Chane Laforet.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): The 18 certificate, earned by this series has everything to do with the bloody violence and nothing to do with Baccano! offering up anything beyond the most minimal level of fanservice, if any at all really.

Analysis: The way the plot is put together with Baccano! is very original, taking non-linnear storytelling onto a new level, by creating a jumbled jigsaw puzzle of a series that gradually comes to together with each passing episode. And with so many different 'lead' characters there should be at least a couple that you should really be able to invest in and 'connect' with. In fact the very unique thing about Baccano! is that it's asking you the viewer to choose who the main characters are, leading to an ending at the end of the main 13 episode run that is both very clever, yet so obvious at the same time.

The very things that make Baccano! so good, are also it's main weaknesses. There are so many plots/characters darting about within each episode, that the multi layered non linnear plot can become a confusing mess. This is particularly the case within the early episodes, when the rather unique style of story telling can really throw you for a loop. Once however the series settles into it's stride, or rather you the viewer settle into the series....it does suddenly switch from being frustrating to engaging.

Closing Verdict: I had seen a lot of high praise for Baccano! before I watched, with many praising it as one of the best anime's of recent times...

Well here's the thing, as much as I did like the series, I also feel it's somewhat over-rated. Yes the storytelling is original but I think the slightly OTT praise this series got, when it came out was due to the fact it felt unique in an art-form that admittedly can at time fall back on some of the same old cliches. It's a good series, in fact it's a very good series, one I would recommend people to watch, it's just not the flawless 'masterpiece' many have talked it up to be.

Is the Dub Any Good?: The consistently good Funimation studio pull off a really classy dub here, with much of the cast bringing their A-Game and with the series mostly taking place in 1930's New York...it actually feels more 'natural' with the English dub track, than with it's original Japanese soundtrack. Particular standout performances for me were J.Michael Tatum and Caitlin Glass, as the aforementioned dim witted thieves Isaac and Miriam and Bryan Massey as the sadistic Ladd Russo.

Genre: Space Western, Crime Fiction, Science Fiction Noir

Studio: Sunrise, Director: Shinchiro Watanabe, Writer: Keiko Nobumuto, Source: Anime Original

Original Run: October 1998-April 1999. Episodes: 26

Plot: Set in 2071 with the entire solar system made accessible through the invention of Hyperspace gates, grizzled ex-cop Jet Black is the captain of the Bebop, partnered with the care-free but skilled martial artist Spike Spiegel, the pair work as Bounty Hunters throughout the solar system, struggling to maintain a living, desperately relying on their next bounty to keep them going.

Along the way the Bebop picks up more crew members, Ein a genetically alterered dog, mysterious femme fatale Faye Valentine and the eccentric cyber-hacking genius Edward. Throughout the series the crews past slowly catches up with them, affecting not only themselves but their relationships with the crew aboard the Bebop.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Cowboy Bebop is still recognisably anime, but it has a style all it's own- this should come as no surprise from a director (Watanabe) who has tended to shy away from anime cliches and generic art styles. And though this series came out in the late 90's, the quality of the animation still holds up well to today's standards.

Music: I'm personally not a fan of jazz or blues, which much of the Yoko Kano's score is based around but it just fits in really well with the effortessly cool vibe this series manages to carry off. Opening song Tank! by the Seatbelts is a rousing yet cool opener that really sets the mood and closing song The Real Folk Blues is a stirring bluesy rock track.

Action: Not every episode of Cowboy Bebop is an all out adrenalin rush, but over it's 26 episodes it does see a fair amount of action in a variety of forms, you've got Kung-Fu, gun fights, spaceship 'dog fights', vehicle chases. The action on offer throughout this series certainly is diverse.

Drama: As the series develops the past of each character slowly comes to fruition and it's later on with the characters hardened layers peeled away, that you really become invested in and care about what will happen to each member of the Bebop crew.

Comedy: The three main protagonists of the show Spike, Jet and Faye all have their 'snarker' moments, whilst Edward provides comic relief of a 'quirkier' kind. Most of all though the script just has a real effortless/natural wit throughout. The series is rarely laugh out loud, but there are often lines/situations that can't help but consistently raise a smile.

Moe/Kawaii: I'm not sure 'Moe', was even thought of when Cowboy Bebop originally came out, and thankfully there's not even a hint of it here. I've got nothing against Moe (in fact I have a bit of a weakness for it) but could you just imagine if this series was done with a crew of moe-blob girls (then again Moretsu Pirates isn't that far off from being that very thing:p).

You're even clutching at straws here for anything remotely kawaii (cute), I suppose some people may find stumpy legged dog Ein Cute- I'm more of a cat person myself.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): Buxom beauty Faye Valentine, is a character who is fully aware of her 'assets' and uses them to her advantage, making her a character that provides moments of fan-service but they never feel like fan-service of the gratuitous kind, it's all done in the context of the story being told with the character that she is. Meanwhile Judy a big boobed blonde bimbo, who host's a TV show for Bounty Hunters called 'Big Shot'- is a blatant spoof/dig at characters in anime who are just there to provide blatant fan-service.

Analysis: Cowboy Bebop blends together influences from many different genres: Crime Drama, Science Fiction, Western, Martial arts and even blaxploitation, to make a unique whole. And whilst each episode tends to focus more a particular genre (the episode Mushroom Stomp is a obvious homage to blaxploitation movies) the series never feels like it is just jumping around different genres unable to find it's true voice.

It's with the gradual development of the main characters, that the series truly comes alive and though each episode can easily be enjoyed as a stand alone by itself....it's in the series second half, with the loose plot threads gradually weaving together that you come to the realisation that you aren't just watching a good/entertaining series you're watching something truly great.

Personally I found the character of Edward to be a bit jarring at first, because initially they just didn't really seem to fit in with the 'cool' vibe that the series had going on. I thought 'Edward' was going to be a bit of a 'scrappy' but in the end the character did manage to grow on me and I found myself actually caring about the character by the end.

Also as good as Cowboy Bebop is at subtlety piecing together episodes that can be seen as stand alone stories in themselves, not everyone of those episodes is a 'home run'. To be honest I'm really clutching at straws here to find a glaring weakness.

Closing Verdict: I'm sure most anime fans, would be aware of this series and how it's universally praised as one of the best of all time, so I will fully admit that I'm not actually saying anything new here, and i'm not going to surprise anyone by going against the general consensus just for the sake of being 'controversial' with my opinions.

Basically the bottom line here, is that Cowboy Bebop deserves it's reputation. Even if you're not a really an 'anime' fan, this series is a must-see for anyone who just appreciates good storytelling no matter how it's presented.

Highly Recommended

Is the Dub Any Good?: The original Japanese version isn't bad, but the general opinion is that dub is actually the superior version to go with. I too would have to agree with this general sentiment, mostly because the characters aren't actually Japanese and they feel more natural speaking English. Now that point would be rendered useless, if the English cast's performances weren't noteworthy of praise. But to this day the English dub of Cowboy Bebop is seen as real benchmark in quality. Particular praise goes to Steve Blum who is engaging as the enigmatic 'lead' Spike Spiegel and Wendee Lee who's multi-layered performance as the hard on the outside/not so hard on the inside Faye Valentine is something of a show stealing performance.

Interesting to read your thoughts on Baccano. I've never seen it myself, but one of my friends recommends it very highly. And while you don't seem quite as in love with it as he is, your overall positive review reinforces the idea that I should finally watch it.

I liked your Bebop review, but I don't have much to say about the series that you haven't already heard a thousand times before. For me, it stands alone as the best anime I've ever seen.

As you said it's hard to say anything new on a series, that has probably been reviewed about thousand of times before and apart from the truly misguided, everyone pretty much comes to the same conclusion.

There are a couple of series I personally enjoy more (that I will of course get round to reviewing) but I certainly wouldn't begrudge anyone being of the opinion that Cowboy Bebop is the greatest anime they've ever seen.

I'll have to check out Baccano. I've never been a fan of Cowboy Bebop. just never did anything for me. The reviews are good, keep them up.

How can you not like Cowboy Bebop- sacrilege! :p

Seriously though I just appreciate that you are reading and enjoying my reviews- that's all that matters :).....I don't expect everyone to agree with my opnion's wholesale.

Genre: Swords & Scorcery Fantasy, Romantic Comedy, Fanservice

Studio: Manglobe, Director: Masamitsu Hidaka, Writer: Masashi Suzuki, Source: Light Novels by Isao Miura

Original Run: October-December 2009. Episodes: 12

Plot: 44 years prior to the start of the story, the land was ravaged by the Valbanil War. One of the most dangerous 'weapons' during the conflict was the 'Demon Contract' a process that involved humans sacrificing their own bodies to become powerful demons. Realising the damage caused by the 'Demon Contracts' the surviving nations declared peace with one another and banned further use of the devastating Demon Contracts.

Cecily Campbell as 3rd generation Knight from Housman (an independent trade city) is proud of her heritage and wishes to protect her city just as her ancestors did before her but despite her determination she is a weak fighter and when she fights a 'mad' veteran of the Valbanil War in the market she finds herself overmatched and facing defeat- she is lucky then that a mysterious blacksmith wielding a katana named Luke Ainsworth come to her rescue.

Cecily is impressed by Luke's Katana a weapon she has never seen before and asks him to make one for her, but he is reluctant to do so and he is initially unimpressed by Cecily despite coming to her rescue. In the meantime a mysterious cloaked figure has emerged and Demon Contracts are on the rise once again.

Animation Quality/Art Style: The general quality of the animation is up to a decent standard and the character designs are easy enough on the eye. But the generic Moe/Bishojo style caused a struggle to take this swords and sorcery series seriously.

Music: Opening song Justice of Light by Mayumi Gojo is a generic J-Pop rock song, listenable but nothing to write home about. Closing song Miracle Happy Day, sung by one of the original seiyuu Aki Toyasaki is a cutesy pop song, that I found to be really jarring following a cliffhanger at the end of an episode.

Action: Being a swords and sorcery series, there are of course Sword fights, and sword fights with magical swords to boot, and despite the generic bishojo character designs that aren't ideal in my opinion for this sort of series, the action in itself is in fact quite thrilling and it increases when the series drops the ‘comedy’ for the final arc.

Drama: The opening few episodes are basically a slice of life comedy-drama set in a fantasy setting, built around the stereotypical anime relationship of a Tsundere and a jerk-ass, there are hints to the bigger storyline, re the role of demon-swords and the in these early episodes, but both the plot and the development of the characters only begin to truly kick in way past the half-way point. In fact despite being only 12 episodes, Sacred Blacksmith can easily be divided into three opening, middle and ending arcs.

Comedy: The opening two third of this series, are hard to take seriously, or more like the creators weren’t taking it all that seriously. Cecily starts off as an incompetent ditz, who couldn’t fight her way out of a paper bag and there is much emphasis on a certain part of her body (more on that later). In fact until the final arc, Sacred Blacksmith may as well be perceived as being a slice of life comedy, dressed up in fantasy clothing.

Moe/Kawaii: Cecily has moe traits, but the real ‘moe’ character is Luke’s ‘Pixie like’ assistant Lisa.....she becomes even more moe, when the characters back-stories get revealed in the final (more emotional and more serious) arc. The middle arc also features our heroine getting involved with an exiled princess and her crew of all female bodyguards, that only serves to ramp up the series moe-blob quotient.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): It will not go un-noticed by viewers that Cecily has a rather big pair of 'assets', and it certainly doesn’t go un-noticed by the creators of this series either (without actually reading the light novels, I’m not sure who’s to blame here, the original writer or the makers of the anime) With the constant mentioning of how big her assets are (at least during the first two thirds of the series) it was like the writers of the script were stuck in some lame 1970's sex comedy. And of course they don’t just talk about Cecily’s knockers either, the armour she wears, brings focus to them, and if that's not enough we actually get to see them in all their glory a few times throughout the series.

Analysis: The main problem with Sacred Blacksmith as an anime, is that it’s confused as to what exactly it wants to be, or just how it wants to approach the material. The opening two thirds are hard to take seriously. It's almost as though the Swords and Sorcery fantasy genre is being lampooned, which would be fine but the comedy itself isn't really strong enough either. And though I don't mind a bit of fanservice, it's usually a tell-tell indicator that the story being told isn't all that strong in the first place.

The curious thing about Sacred Blacksmith though is, when it does turn more serious in the final third, dropping the comedy and de-emphasising the fan-service....it does get alot better and suddenly the story reaches a new potential and it gets a whole lot more interesting. Problem is that just as you suddenly getting into the plot, it suddenly ends abrubtly leaving you with a bit a non-ending- though I get the feeling they were leaving it open for a potential second series.

Closing Verdict: I can’t help feel that Sacred Blacksmith is a series where an opportunity to make something much better has been missed. The final arc, when it turns more serious and shows the potential the series could have had, at least makes it a watchable series but still far from one I would recommend. Admittedly only being 12 episodes also hurt the pacing of the series, and perhaps had it been given a longer run, it could have made a better fist of blending together the more serious drama and rapid character development of the final arc, with the more comedic focus of the first two thirds.

Mediocre

Is the Dub Any Good?: It's a Funimation dub, so you know the standard here is going to at least be 'serviceable' and that's exactly what it is. Cherami Leigh is fairly charming in the lead role of Cecily Campbell, but I just get the feeling everyone else was sort of 'phoning it in' with this one, as though they know what their dubbing, really ain't that good in the first place.

It's not an all time classic or anything, but I enjoyed Sacred Blacksmith more than you did. I'd probably give it a 6.5 or 7 on a scale out of 10. I definitely get what you're saying, though. It's the last 4 or 5 episodes that really earn it that score, and without them I'd probably second your 5 out of 10. Up to that point, it had been fairly mediocre. I probably wouldn't have made it that far in if I'd had to pay to watch, but fortunately I have the Funimation Channel.

I like the tone and style of your reviews. Short enough to be palatable but detailed enough to do justice to each series you look at. Evn though I miht disagree here and there, you talk about the things you like and dont like. This may seem like "duh... it's a review" but unfortunately many reviewer become too self-important and feel the need to FIND things to complain about rather than just talk about their feelings and thoughts in an interesting manner.

Keep it up, sir!

Good reviews. I haven´t watched much anime so far (about ten different shows) but I´m wanting to see more and with not much knowledge about them I might well pick one of those reviewed shows next to go alongside with School Rumble that I started watching after you mentioned it in your diary. :)

With a more decisive ending, rather than one that had me going 'is that it?' I probably would have stretched up to a 6.

That's exactly what I'm aiming for, I want to give enough detail/opinion without waffling on for hours whilst practically giving away the plot of the entire series.

You've started on School Rumble :) Be nice to hear your opinions on it, well after I've posted up my review for the series. Pointing some people towards a few series they haven't seen before is part of the reason why I started up the thread, and likewise readers own recommendations/requests could point me towards checking out a few new one's myself (as I've not seen every anime going- far from it).

Dear Mr One Star,

It is occured to me that you have finally found this thread of mine. I'm actually wondering what took you so long, maybe you were feeling unwell and couldn't lift your finger to click on a mouse.

Well you've finally done it, you've managed to muster up all that effort to give me another one star vote. Feel proud of yourself, this must go down as your greatest achievement!

K-On!

Genre: Slice of Life Comedy, Music, 'Moe-Blob'

Studio: Kyoto Animation, Director: Naoko Yamada, Writer: Reiko Yoshida, Source: Manga by Kakifly

Original Run: April-June 2009. Episodes: 13 + 1 OVA

Plot: Yui Hirasawa has just entered high-school and wants to join a club, but having never been any good at anything in her life is undecided on which club to join. Fortunately for her the Light Music club are desperate for anyone to join, even a clueless ditz like Yui or their club will dispanded. So with enticement of delicious snacks and assurance that no actual musical ability is necessary Yui joins the Light Music Club.

Yui becomes the guitarist (something it turns out she had the natural talent for all along) and along with bassist Mio Akiyama, drummer Ritsu Tainaka and keyboardist Tsumugi Kotobuki- the girls form a high school rock band with dreams of one day making it to the Budokan. As the series progressed the four girls (with the guidance of music teacher Sawako) the four girls spend their school days practicing, performing and just generally hanging out together. During the girls second year of high school they recruit a new member, Azusa Nakano who becomes the bands second guitarist.

Animation Quality/Art Style: There is no doubt that part of why K-On! has been a huge success, is that the moe character designs are just so easy on the eye- every band member is just do damn cute! That being said the real strong point, is the effort you can see Kyoto Animation have put into the backgrounds- K-On! really is a gorgeous looking series.

The only disappointment is that though the band performance sequences are animated pretty well, they are often interspersed with cut away scenery shots- more than likely the reasoning here is that things like musical performances are alot more time consuming and therefore more expensive to animate.

Music: Part of how much you like this series, depends on how much you enjoy catchy Power-Pop, as that is exactly the music that Ho-Kago Tea Time play. Personally I love their songs, and for me both the opening theme Cagayake Girls and the ending theme Don't Say Lazy are excellent, as well as insert songs such as Fuwa Fuwa Time.

Opening Theme, Cagayake Girls

Closing Theme, Don't Say Lazy

Outside of the songs of Ho-Kago Tea Time, the incidental score is also rather perky, which is in-keeping with the general 'feel good' vibe of this anime.

Action: Well there is Ritsu's barrel roll in one of the episodes- but seriously, this is a Slice of Life Comedy, if you're looking for action- look elsewhere.

Drama: There's nothing too 'heavy' here this is definitely a light-hearted comedy series and alot of the time it appears as though not much is happening. But there is a story to be told here, a pretty simple one really- one that is ultimately about four (later five) girls and their blossoming friendship.

Comedy: If there is ever something that fits ‘Your Mileage May Vary’ trope to a tee, it’s people’s tastes in comedy. Personally I find K-On! to be pretty funny- with the comedy coming from various things such as Yui’s Airheadness/clumsiness, Azuza wanting to get serious when all the others just want to goof off and eat cakes, Ritsu's ribbing of the shy Mio and Sawaka's cosplay fixation.

Moe/Kawaii: Basically K-On! can be summed up as four 'Moe-Blob's form a band and then along comes 'Azu-nyan' and the moe factor is rocketed up even more. If you really don't like Moe at all, then this really is not the series for you.

Adult Content (Fanservice etc): Very mild - most of it involves the more fuller figured Mio- such as Mio in a maid outfit, Mio in her swimming costume etc. K-On! plays more on being cute rather than ‘sexy’- which is actually a good thing, seeing as we’re talking about a slice of life comedy set in a girls high school.

Analysis: As I said the music of Ho-Kago Tea Time is really good (though musical taste is a subjective thing) and though it often seems to be a series where not much happens- the whole thing just has a real heart-warming quality about it.

Despite the music being good, there isn't enough of it and admittedly too much time is spent with the girls doing not much at all really (except drink lots of tea and eat even more cake). Curiously despite being a series where not alot happens, the story also moves along too fast, with two years of high school covered in just a 13 episode series, and one where we get two episodes of the same thing- the band goes on a training camp- where they end up doing pretty much the same thing they do back at school- goofing off eating cakes!

Closing Verdict If you really dislike 'Moe' , are looking for lots of action or something with a bit of ‘depth’ then K-On! isn’t for you but as a slice of life comedy, it is very well crafted. But if you’re open to K-On! rather heart-warming blend and like power-pop music, then this a series that is difficult not to enjoy.

Mildly Recommended

Is the Dub Any Good?: I did suffer through one episode of the Animax dub- which is just terrible. Bandai then did a more official dub for the American DVD release of the series- though it's not bad and the five leads all do an admirable enough job- the original Japanese version is much better and feels alot more natural- part of that is because some of the comedy just can't quite be translated all that well and the fact that the seiyu also sing the songs.

Genre: Slice of Life Comedy, Music, 'Moe-Blob'

Studio: Kyoto Animation, Director: Naoko Yamada, Writer: Reiko Yoshida, Source: Manga by Kakifly

Original Run: October 2010- March 2011. Episodes: 24 + 3 OVA

Notes: The second series of K-On!, literally was titled K-On!!, with the extra exclamation mark showing that it was the second series.

Plot: The original four members of the Light Music Club/Ho-Kago Tea Time (Yui, Mio, Ritsu & Tsumugi) are in their final year of high school and whilst their enthusiasm for their club and their determination to one day play the Budokan is still there- they also all want to make it into college and preferably all at the same one. Meanwhile underclassman Azusa just doesn't want them to go, in fear of never seeing them again.

Animation Quality/Art Style: Nothings changed from the first series, which is a good thing, as the quality was already up to an excellent standard...especially for a slice of life series, with little in the way of 'set piece' action sequences.

Music: If you liked the music in the first series, you'll like it here too. Both opening themes Go Go Maniac and Utauyo Miracle are really energetic, whilst the closing themes Listen and No Thank You are just really well crafted pop-rock. The perky incidental score remains- so like the art style/animation of the first series, they haven't fixed what wasn't broken in the first place.

First Opening Theme, Go Go Maniac

Second Opening Theme, Utauyo Miracle

First Closing Theme, Listen

Second Closing Theme, No Thank You

Action: Well there is the episode where they have the School Race and Mio pulls out something utterly ridiculous to win (which is very funny I may add) the race- but yeah.....no mecha's, samurai or anything that could shake up K-On!'s moe moe world has suddenly made an appearance.

Drama: The emotional attachment to the characters should have grown stronger and the fact that the girls also have more to think about this series (they're in the final year of school and in order to make it into college, some of them have to take it more seriously) makes for a little more variation in the drama. It's not drama with lots of plot-twists and thrills but anyone who has had built up close friendships during their time will be able to resonate with the story being told here and I'm not ashamed to admit that the final episode (of the originally broadcast 24) brought a tear to my eye.

Comedy: The comedy element hasnt really changed from the first series, as in the material is pretty much the same but somehow I found this second series got even funnier, as though the more familiar you become each characters nuisances, the funnier the jokes become. Think of it as those times, when you're with your friends and you have those in-jokes that are really only funny to you....it's like that for people who have seen both series of K-On!

Moe/Kawaii + Adult Content (Fanservice etc): See my review of the first series- nothing's changed here.

Analysis: The comedy has got stronger as you become more familiar with the characters and despite still plodding along at a leisurely pace (even more so with the extended 24 episode run) the story has more resonance too, leading to a genuinely emotional finale.

Despite being a series about a school rock band, there still isn't enough emphasis on that element, and the disappointing thing about that is that the songs are good. If you're coming into K-On! thinking that the emphasis will be on the music, you will be sorely disappointed. It's a moe slice of life comedy, that happens to be centred around a school rock band, that actually practice once in a blue moon and do about two performances during the entire series.

Closing Verdict I'll be honest, if you weren't charmed by the very much moe based charms of the first series, then you won't enjoy this second season. However for me the second season, manages to be even better than the first because it plays to it's strengths more as a truly warming slice of life comedy.

Is the Dub Any Good?: Since Bandai went under, Sentai Filmworks has taken on the American license. Thus far no dub has been made for K-On!!- and it remains to be seen if one will be made and if they use the same cast. I'd be surprised if a dub doesn't get made, though even if they stick with the Bandai cast or go with another cast, they will always struggle to match up to the performance of the original seiyu.

Really liking the reviews so far but some references, especially in the first piece where you keep referring to Haruhi without explaining who that is, might go over the head of people who are not real Anime aficionados or just somewhat (like me) and haven't delved in deep (yet).
