Cverse XL: HYPE

Recommended Posts

As I’ve already mentioned I’m working on a mod for the Cverse.

It’s a brilliant, lively game world with plenty to do in it but it’s always frustrated me slightly that at the bottom end jobs and development is so hard to come by.

Yes people have employed Dusty Bin in 0/0/0/0 companies and for fun but very rarely do people like him, Devastating Don or Ultra Fly get serious jobs and therefore they just sit around gathering dust.

This mod adds over 30 small companies to the Cverse and gives lots of bottom-feeding talent either a job or the opportunity to get one.

Some of the companies have the chance to grow and develop due to money, product or talent and some of them are doomed to wither and die but all of them contribute to making each game more dynamic and changeable. It’s unlikely the likes of Smasher and Mauler or Vikki Victoria will ever be main eventing The Supreme Challenge but they might just catch on at APW or MAW if they’ve had the chance to actually work and get some exposure.

Things I’ve completed:

All companies added to the database

All logos and banners completed

All rosters set (some details to be refined)

97 events completed.

Event logos for some existing companies (WEXXV, VWA, NYCW, ECW)

Company challenges and hiring rules (word doc - not in-game)

Most alter egos added (about 30). Pictures included where necessary

Things I’m going to get done:

Complete 46 event logos

Complete alt pics for alter egos

I’ll also be adding challenges. Each company will come with a set of rules to allow a certain scenario with hiring rules and a goal to achieve. We’ve seen that people want rules and specific things to achieve and hopefully this will help do that.

So, plenty to do but it’s keeping me busy at least. Can’t wait to get the full game and some time so I can continue with testing

All logos, pics and data will be fully available to use for private games, mods and diaries. Just let me know that (hopefully) you’re enjoying it.

I'll post all company logos over the next few days...

Sounding interesting dude, will definitely play this mod when you release it... just wondering a few things... 1) how many UK companies do you have? as i bet there's a lot of UK workers out there unemployed in the new game! and 2) do all the companies you've created have back stories as to why they were created as companies or are they just chucked in to make the numbers up? I'm hoping the former! :)

Absolutely. There are currently 6 new UK companies. i cant decide whether to open HIW or not. On the one hand theyre my favourite cverse company but Im not sure I can remove Dark Angel and UK Dragon from 21CW with a clear conscience. And you cant have HIW without those two!

Here are the UK companies and their in-game backstories:

British Samurai was one of the great losers from Jeff Nova’s buyout of British wrestling as Ring of Fire ceased to be. Guildford 6 was his response (with 5 others) as he set up a new company with a new crowd in a new part of the company.

Instead of just recreating ROF Guildford 6 is a realistic, work-rate based company where the titular 6 take on fresh challengers every show. This is not about storylines, this is purely about accomplished fighters defending their reputation. Should any of the 6 lose to a challenger they will be replaced on the roster by their vanquisher.

So far that hasn’t happened but as some of them age it must be a matter of time.

http://imageshack.us/a/img842/7013/camdenundergroundbanner.jpg

When Jeff Nova bought out all competition in the UK he created a great product that made him lots of money. He also alienated people who wanted something else which is why Camden underground was always going to happen sooner or later.

Like a modern-day Malcolm MacDowell Percy Usher-Soames realised that what the kids want is going to sell regardless of how unpopular that is.

CUG features plenty of blood in dirty, underground rock clubs where the fans can get up close to the action and no one minds warm cans of beer.

Percy is also very happy to spice up his shows with some very non-PC women’s content and bands that are a benefit from being based in one of the world’s very best live music hotspots.

21CW are polished, modern and accomplished. Back garden Wrestling are none of those things. They’re sloppy, thrown-together and cheap.

In certain people’s eyes that does make them more authentic though and there’s certainly an argument that skinny guys hitting each other with barbed wire in car parks is a more thrilling sight than Joss Thompson jawing with Eddie Cornell on TV. Again.

http://imageshack.us/a/img717/5893/bigtop.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img803/681/bigtopbanner2.jpg

Larger than life characters travelling around together to wow ignorant punters out of their hard-won money. It’s no surprise that wrestling and carnivals grew up together. What is surprising is how far apart they’ve grown.

Big Top wrestling in Ireland is trying to change that with shows based on circus staples (strongmen, clowns, acrobats) as well as some more modern acts. Smash them all together and Ringmaster Papa O’Keefe’s company are certainly amongst the more striking evening’s entertainments.

In ring the sheer variety of types of worker mean that every match is unique and to highlight that Big Top use a high amount of gimmick matches.

http://imageshack.us/a/img163/6761/bglitz.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img7/6769/blackpoolglitzbanner2.jpg

Russian Oligarches eh? These days you can’t move without one buying up cherished sporting traditions. Smertin is no Abramovic but he is still a very rich man creating his own private plaything.

Unfortunately as is so often the case with the nouveau riche Smertin has somewhat missed the mark with B-Glitz. There are spangles, smackdowns and stars but everything has a slightly tawdry feeling in the chicken-fat scented town in Lancashire.

B-Glitz treads a fine line between family entertainment and stag-party thrills leaving the average punter somewhat confused but Smertin’s deep pockets ensure B-Glitz will almost certainly succeed sooner or later.

http://imageshack.us/a/img834/4571/pictko.jpg

http://imageshack.us/a/img545/3794/pictbanner1.jpg

Scotland’s place in British accomplishments is often highlighted by themselves. In wrestling however their record is patchy at best. The independently wealthy Robert Etchinson is trying to change that by running a promotion that takes itself seriously and puts on serious sporting spectacles rather than overblown vignettes.

PICT use Scots whenever possible but are equally willing to get foreigners in to make up the numbers. It’s just that if those workers are English they tend to get a rather heated welcome. There is yet to be an English babyface in the company entirely due to the potential audience reaction.

Thanks for the feedback chaps. I havent done tag teams yet but Im sure we can find room for a Psyko Dalek.

In the interests of openness here are the current European companies:

http://imageshack.us/a/img17/9651/alphapd.jpg

When you’re from Scandinavia you’re either ALPHA or you’re no one. The ALPHA Norwegian himself – Bam Bam Johansson – set up the region’s foremost wrestling promotion purely to allow other ALPHA people to be with and watch other ALPHA performers destroy the opposition and each other.

The company is full of huge, overly-muscled nutcases who ride motorbikes, fight sharks, get cool tattoos and swig bottles of unlabelled, Scandy spirits.

Bam bam’s brother Hercules also pointed that that a good way to look even more ALPHA is to stand next to skinny little non-ALPHA guys so there are now some of these weedy types in the company too. They’re only there as fishfood though. Does anyone seriously think the likes of them can go toe to toe with Bam Bam himself?

http://imageshack.us/a/img13/7775/51526958.jpg

Their full name is the slightly unwieldy überquerengeschlechtkuriositätenkabinett Berlin but everyone just calls them U Berlin. In celebration of modern Teutonic society U Berlin glories in slow, technical wrestling, large amounts of beer and a totally un-self-conscious approach to adult relations. It’s not that they go out of their way to be risqué but our German friends are very clear about their sexuality and if you mix large amounts of attractive people and beer together things are going to happen. Why not just be open about it?

To be very clear – in 21st century Germany there are no villains but there are clashes of interests. Germany’s success isn’t due to them being patient or putting up with being second best. Everyone in U Berlin knows exactly what they want and are not afraid to be very direct about getting it. Whoever that puts them in conflict with.

http://imageshack.us/a/img812/7697/iqke.jpg

IQK is a pure, intense promotion that features women not just prepared but ultra-keen to use any moves they can to win and beat their opponent into submission.

They were set up by Eva Berlin and Alpha Female and the pair’s no-nonsense attitudes pervade the company in-ring. All business, no messing.

http://imageshack.us/a/img594/9899/eurotrash.jpg

After setting up the juggernaut that is now 21CW Tyler Baker spent time enjoying his money around the fleshpots of Europe. It was whilst in Faliraki knocking back B52s with teenage girls that he decided he might stay forever.

Eurotrash is Mr Baker’s expression of what his life is and what he wants it to be. Like an episode of the legendary 90s Antoine de Caunes show an average Eurotrash show features nudity, fighting, hilarious foreign trends and some very bad music.

This of course leaves Greece and most European nationalities aghast but delights the strong UK tourist population who fit in a show between all day breakfasts at Jez’s Cafe next door and sleeping it off on the beach.

I can't decide whether Eurotrash, ALPHA, Blackpool Glitz or Camden Underground looks the most fun. Great stuff!

Well hopefully theyll all be ok!

Any promotion gonna be in Hawaii:)

I really want to play this mod

Yep. It's Return to the Islands (as a successor to Welcome the the Islands in the 7-s cverse mod)

http://imageshack.us/a/img12/2559/rtti.jpg

Camden Underground looks amazing. It's just begging for a band stable.

I hadnt thought of it. But it will be in now :)

My Dad was born in Guildford London! I knew there was something about you.... ;) hahaha

This mod is probably THE most exciting mod around (apart from rw or LondonVerse) Those are the top 3 anyway! Keep it up man!

Guildford is the town I was born in. :)

They're supposed to reference the Guildford 4. Never knew we had so many TEW players from the home of the Stranglers. Although claiming its in London is a bit of a stretch

Thanks for the comments chaps

Canada:

http://imageshack.us/a/img442/4967/1000ib.jpg

It has long been known that Dunton Hall (The Smartest Man in the World) is a closet wrestling fan amongst his many and varied interests and many have suspected he would invest in the grappling world to go up against Jeff Nova’s UK hegemony. So it came as a big surprise that when he finally did set up his own company it was in Toronto, Canada.

1,000 Islands is in many ways light-hearted. They feature some extremely gimmicky action in and out of the ring and have not bought their way to success with huge signings as some might have suspected. Instead Hall appears content to be based in one of the nicest cities in the world and to grow organically.

Having said that Hall is not the kind of man to fail and his deep pockets mean that 1KI have resources of a company much larger than they actually are.

http://imageshack.us/a/img818/1531/cninja.jpg

Larry Wood is one of the most inscrutable men in the wrestling world but setting up Canadian Ninja was out there even for him.

They are a small company running out of Calgary that tour around the interior of the country. Their shows are an odd mix of Eastern martial arts mashed together with Canadian mountain toughness with some outlandish characters thrown in. It’s very early in their existence and anything could happen but in their favour is the uniqueness of their shows.

http://imageshack.us/a/img15/8978/fngfj.jpg

In a response to modern wrestling being so modern, well-produced and exciting FNCF is the direct opposite. Biff the Bruiser is an old-school man and set the company up to prove that you can put on great shows with just a cage and a supply of legitimately tough men who will fight until they can’t any more. The style is raw but intense. Toughness here isn’t knowledge of 100 different moves it’s spitting out teeth and coming back for more.

Their shows tend to take place in dirty, scuzzy venues where the fans are just as likely to scuffle with each other as the actual workers. In fact it’s not unusual for particularly boisterous members of the audience to be invited into the cage itself to put their money where their mouth is.

http://imageshack.us/a/img818/6488/mqrfg.jpg

Montreal Quebecois Revolutions is an old-fashioned, traditional wrestling company in the ring. Go to one of their shows and you instantly know who’s the good and bad guy as you see some decent if limited grappling. The only real difference between MQR and NYCW is a few hours’ drive and the fact that all MQR shows are conducted entirely in French. Anyone speaking English is likely to be asked to leave the building extremely quickly.

Make no mistake this is an organisation that is militantly proud of their region. Jean-Pierre Baptiste was increasingly involved in politics after his retirement and was tempted back purely to generate funds for the Quebecois Seperatist movement.

Reluctantly Baptiste has started to employ non French speaking workers but these are kept entirely silent whilst on active duty.

Australia:

http://imageshack.us/a/img534/9633/desertiii.jpg

Desert Trios is a very strange combination of badlands hard-men (think mad Max 2) and luchadors with very dodgy accents.

No-one knows who in blazes thought this would be a good idea but it probably wasn’t someone who’d ever seen Priscilla: Queen of the Desert. Or ever visited Alice Springs. Or Australia.

Thrown together trios of wrestlers who really should know better in 2/3 falls matches is just a weird sight in a hard-drinking desert town. But admittedly not one that that fades quickly from memory.

http://imageshack.us/a/img827/6494/61699183.jpg

Runanga Aneatanga are a pseudo-cultural company seeking to show off the majesty, pride and warrior ability of the Maori race and Kiwis as a whole.

They employ locals and Pacific Islanders wherever possible and the action is kept to a basic, serious tone with very little posturing, storylines or hype.

It’s a decent enough time-killer for those put off by the OTT nature of ZEN but whether they are interesting enough to have a serious future is as yet unclear.

http://imageshack.us/a/img38/5083/athemp.jpg

Athletic Empire is a riposte to the likes of Desert Trios and RAW which present Australia as limited stereotypes. AE instead plays up the Aussies rich history of sporting achievement by presenting bouts as real sport between world-class competitors.

AE’s fans tend to be militantly certain that their beloved company really is putting on athletic shows to the extent they will simply refute the fact that some of their favourite wrestlers can also be seen in other companies.

In the ring athleticism, speed, power and strength are prized with some great feats of sporting prowess showcased.

http://imageshack.us/a/img6/5562/62753742.jpg

Do BB count as a wrestling company? Kind of I suppose. The Australians are of course quite an attractive, carefree and fun nation. Gerard Knights put two and two together and decided that a women’s-only skin-over-skill company might make him a few dollars.

Unfortunately this noble idea has been somewhat kyboshed by the fact there are very few ladies in Australia with any wrestling ability whatsoever. Not to be put off Knights has thrown money at the problem and convinced some of the ladies involved with the business in other roles that it can’t be that hard and they might as well throw each other around in bikinis.

What could go wrong?

Thanks. I just might ask some people to have a go before I release it.

Ran my first year's trial last night with mixed results. One company had fantastic grades (into the 60s) which is too high. About 12 closed within a year (oops!) and the rest were about right.

Most rosters are set (a few are left quite bare so they'll be different every time) and I've started setting individual roles, gimmicks, momentum, etc.

Adding events takes absolutely ages.

Alter egos is not going to be fun at all.

But it works at least. It's certainly playable now.

Anyway - here's the companies in the USA:

Baltimore Wild

http://imageshack.us/a/img213/9759/bwild.jpg

Women’s wrestling has exploded in the last few years in the USA and beyond with varied and interesting opportunities for lady-grapplers to seize. B-Wild is a statement that women can do anything men can and maybe do it even better.

Their in-ring product is striking featuring stiff blows, direct confrontation and lashings of blood. Make no mistake B-Wild is a Hard Core promotion with two very capital letters.

How different they are is especially noticeable given that being based in Baltimore they’re just down the road from QAW. Given the rivalry between the companies and the difference in product it’s likely that workers will move between the two.

Calories 500

http://imageshack.us/a/img521/3262/cal500.jpg

It’s true that the USA is home to a number of large people. Within the country the Midwest could be said to be home to some of them. And within the Midwest Indianapolis is the capital of FAT.

Cal-500 doesn’t hide from this fact – it embraces it by showcasing wrestling featuring only very large individuals. No it doesn’t lead to the the fastest of high-flying matches but it does show the fans that they aren’t so different and maybe, just maybe they could do this at home.

If you like to see larger-than life men slowly shuffling around each other and a ring tested to it’s limits then Cal-500 is the place for you.

OLD

http://imageshack.us/a/img266/2092/oldxlg.jpg

Fabulous Frank has tried to leave the wrestling business a few times but keeps coming back because of the great money even an old has-been can make if he’s willing to make some sacrifices.

Original Legends Deathmatches is based on that fact. Veterans who need a few dollars go through the sort of matches DAVE would have thought twice about putting on and the fans get a great night out watching their heroes bleed for them.

The company is based in the Everglades for tax reasons and a lot of the workers they use tend to hang around to enjoy the sunshine.

Devil Women

http://imageshack.us/a/img846/497/71094128.jpg

After the demise of BSC women’s wrestling has taken great steps forward to be treated as much more acceptable. Devil Women combines this trend with the fact that Latina women are extremely wilful, assertive and hot.

DW sees independent-minded but fearfully angry beauties take their personal issues to the ring. The seats in the front few rows are actually cheaper due to the necessity of dodging thrown items. And whatever you do – don’t get caught staring at the girls.

Spokane Suicide Society

http://imageshack.us/a/img560/886/sssys.jpg

There are three things human beings are fundamentally scared of: darkness, surprises and heights. That’s why it’s so much fun to ride rollercoasters and jump out at people.

SSS delivers against two of these thrills as their athletes take absurd risks by launching themselves off of any nearby object with no warning whatsoever. The in-ring action lacks storytelling and structure but the whole company makes up for it in thrills, speed and insane, death-defying leaps.

They were set up by career leaper Air Attack Weasel and he continues to be amongst the most foolish men in wrestling.

Lone Star Wrestling

http://imageshack.us/a/img211/9641/lsw.jpg

With the lack of a good old-fashioned rasslin’ company in Texas Jamaican businessman Harry Chadwick decided there was a gap in the market he could exploit.

Given Harry’s background it’s not the most authentic Southern company there’s ever been but with played-up storylines, cowboys, injuns, and Mexican invasions there’s certainly a lot going on. Some older fans are disgusted by what they see as a perversion of their beloved sport but there just might be a space for this new take on an old favourite.

Chivas LA

http://imageshack.us/a/img547/1637/chivasla.jpg

Within the last few years LA has suddenly become a hotbed of wrestling. Maybe it’s the presence of Tommy Cornell in the city but there is certainly diversity these days.

Chivas LA are the smallest of all promotions based on the Latino component of the city. Rudy Velasquez runs the company with his partners hector Galindo and Jesus Chavez and the crowds tend to be heavy on men who look exactly like them.

Given the weight of competition there might not be space for Chivas long-term but their blend of hard-hitting realistic fights and daredevil risk-taking will be fun whilst it lasts.

Hi NRG

http://imageshack.us/a/img89/411/hinrg.jpg

Sometimes the strangest concepts catch on. Provincetown on the tip of Cape Cod is a beautiful town in an amazing setting. It’s also home to a thriving gay community of very body-proud men.

Whilst on holiday the Australian bodybuilder/wrestler Nighthawk decided that he wanted to spend more time with these like-minded people and set up a small company tailored for the very specific audience. Everyone in Hi-NRG is in fantastic shape and their shows focus on dramatic and hilarious storylines punctuated with small burst of high-octane, thrills in the ring.

There are no real Hi-NRG superfans – it’s just a fun place to go before dinner, drinks and dancing but it does offer an opportunity for work for toned workers who don’t mind an alternative crowd who aren’t afraid to speak their mind.

Return to the Islands

http://imageshack.us/a/img12/2559/rtti.jpg

It’s been many years since there was last an important wrestling company in Hawaii but one night late over cocktails Clark Alexander and local industry personality Smooth C decided that that was something that needed fixing.

Return to the Islands may not feature any of the original Welcome to the Islands clan but with Alexander himself lending star power and a constant, rich base of itinerant fans there could well be an opportunity to build a new following.

Action wise it’s a fairly old-school product and there are no barriers going to be broken here but it’s entertaining and the setting makes everything seem better than it actually is.

Youth Action

http://imageshack.us/a/img41/3313/41960846.jpg

Young people are the lifeblood of wrestling so why are there so many people in it in their 30s or older? Youth Action are trying to change this with the believe that the only people who understand what the kids want are the kids themselves.

The whole company is made up of those in their early 20s at the most and focus on exciting, modern matches and storylines that deal with issues of the fans. Can I get that boy/girl into bed? Can I get enough money to pay my rent? Can someone around here buy me a drink? Why is it all so unfair?

Time will tell how the turnover of new faces alters the fans loyalty but there are always more young people looking for a chance. Which is kind of the point in YA.

Mexico:

Quema de las Libelulas

http://imageshack.us/a/img850/7744/qll.jpg

Burning Dragonflies are amongst the smallest of the new breed of Mexican companies that put a twist on traditional Lucha principles.

That’s fitting as QdlL only employ amongst the smallest workers in the first place. It’s all based on speed and excitement with a hefty dose of fun thrown in.

QdlL certainly aspire to be a bigger company but it’s refreshing these days to see a Lucha company that isn’t a giant US-style monster of a company.

Skull society

http://imageshack.us/a/img198/2563/skullqt.jpg

For legal reasons US ex-pat/fugitive Herb Mackintosh is reluctant to have his name bandied around but it’s his money that funds the mysterious Skull Society.

Action in the ring is as athletic and fast as other Mexican styles but doesn’t have anywhere near the same lightness of heart or joy. Skull society shows are only mentioned to a very few influential fans and the lure of a secret does the rest. People have been known to fall out very seriously over withheld information.

Everyone in the Skull Society wears a mask with no exceptions at all – even those fans who have managed to hear about the show conceal their identities.

Japan:

Double Dragon

http://imageshack.us/a/img838/936/24348217.jpg

In recent years tag wrestling appears to have taken somewhat of a backwards step but Double Dragon is very much an attempt to halt that slide.

They run shows featuring tagteams only (except in special cases) and even though they’re a small and young company appear to have attained an in-industry reputation for being a great place to show off as a team and as a result have picked up teams from beyond the borders of Japan as well as using new and old teams from the nation itself..

ZEN - Japan

http://imageshack.us/a/img856/9508/zenjx.jpg

After the success of ZEN in New Zealand of all places it was only ever a matter of time before Halloween Knight’s brainchild was replicated elsewhere.

Given the typical wrestling style in the country Japan was seen as an interesting spot to try and hit the jackpot again and Knight signed a deal in 2012 for the company’s name to be used by Shino Ko as a franchise.

So far it’s been run as a very similar company but obviously entirely in Japanese. There has been relatively little interaction between the companies as yet but rumours are they will share more talent in the future...

Cutting Edge

http://imageshack.us/a/img843/7364/cuttingedgelogo1.jpg

Wrestling is serious business in Japan of course. It’s taken as a real sport and bouts are intense, physical and confrontational.

Cutting Edge is none of these things. They are basically aimed at a far younger, transient and dissatisfied generation of Japanese fans who have become used to consuming global media and entertainment.

Cutting Edge as a result is far closer to soap opera than traditional puro and features young, good-looking workers in heavily acted, involving storylines with the minimum of actual wrestling.

Phoenix Girls

http://imageshack.us/a/img268/5339/96527804.jpg

Joshi is seen as serious business around the world these days but Phoenix Girls is a very odd example.

Product wise its a bizarre mix of old-fashioned puro with a lot of comedy thrown in. There are involving Junior-style matches with custard pies and double-takes thrown in liberally and all done by ladies. With the lone exception of the owner and booker the cross-dressing American Vikki Victoria.

Bizarre.

PAIN

http://imageshack.us/a/img405/3469/painsjs.jpg

Dick the Devastator was a legendary figure as a competitor around the world including Japan. It was during his time in the company that he realised there was a niche for entertaining the growing tourist trade in the country with stereotypical product.

Increasingly casual observers of Japanese culture are familiar with Takeshi’s Castle and Ninja Warrior over puro and Westerners venturing to a wrestling show were confused and surprised by seeing something so unusual.

PAIN is a blatant and somewhat xenophobic attempt to entice these foreign fans in with gimmicky, zany and extravagant storylines, matches and challenges.

Sweet!

Apparently not running in administrator mode has meant that all the work I've done is wasted and there's no way to recover the files for sharing.

Amazing

Obviously this puts me quite far back as I've got to do everything all over again (which is probably going to be really enjoyable).

Obviously if anyone has a clever idea as to how I can get around this please let me know otherwise this means release is likely going to be right into Jan 2013.

Sorry all...
