Well, it's been a while since we were last here and now Brian Jack's rediculous lawsuit has been thrown out of court we're finally allowed to post our blogs on the internet again. While we were away the undoubtable top request on our email newsletter was for info on Gordon Watts & Jack America's nostalgiafest, Golden Age Wrestling. So, over the coming weeks leading up to GAW's first tour of 2013 in February we'll be highlighting the major feuds & title changes of GAW in 2012 tour by tour, as well as going over any industry changes that effected the company. For those who missed it, here is the near complete record of our show reviews (missing a few pictures is all): CLICK HERE So, first up, a review of the whole of the tour that we never managed to completely cover. ******************** MAY - HAWAII THE RISE OF THE CLAN LUGOSI http://imageshack.us/a/img339/206/erinchristophalt.jpghttp://imageshack.us/a/img703/6179/lugosi.jpghttp://imageshack.us/a/img441/8302/christianprophet.jpghttp://img805.imageshack.us/img805/2553/themummy.jpg The Clan Lugosi debuted with Dusk Octrilogy star Erin Christoph joining the roster as Erik Lugosi and introducing his 'uncle', Count Lugosi. Following his debut match Lugosi dragged a member of the crowd away and the next week the Clan introduced The Zombie Prophet (Christian Prophet) to the audience and declared that the next week they would have a challenger for the GAW World Heavyweight Title. That man would turn out to be The Mummy (The Ghost Rider on loan from CWT) but Kay Pasa went on to win the match. The following weeks saw The Mummy continue to wrestle for GAW, but the man under the bandages was noticibley bigger and had a different style to the first Mummy (it was revealed to Wrestling in Review that the replacement was in fact LWA hard man Bruiser Cassidy). CONTROVERSIAL LEROY WINTERS http://imageshack.us/a/img571/9351/leroywintersalt2.jpg Leroy Winters debuted a controversial new gimmick in May. He donned a Black Panthers hat and began spouting near racist promos! Winters managed to walk the fine line between offensiveness and, well, offensiveness pretty well. On show three of the tour he introduced Zeke King (also sporting the hat, on loan from PWI) as his 'right hand man' and the pair managed to get involved in the semi-finals of the Tag Team Tournament making it a 3Way Tag Match between The Woodcutters, Ali Ababwa & Steamboat Hudson and Winters & King. When King tapped out to Ababwa's Camel Clutch Winters was furious and beat down King. The following show he was 'banned for disorderly conduct' (he actually had an AWF PPV to attend). PROMOTIONAL WAR! http://imageshack.us/a/img846/4286/ecxw.jpghttp://i754.photobucket.com/albums/xx181/jhdTEW/AWF%20Diary/Cards/VS.jpghttp://imageshack.us/a/img843/5901/gawe.jpg In week three of the month there was some rather shocking news, Cindy Austin of Florida based hardcore promotion ECXW used a local TV interview to declare war on the nostalgia filled Golden Age Wrestling! As far as she was concerned GAW '...stands for everything that is wrong with wrestling, and must be destroyed!' All this came just weeks after ECXW received a massive fine for star X breaking into a prison! In the month of May ECXW let go of several of their stars to tighten their belts, one of them was ECXW Maximum Extreme Champion X. In a statement made to Wrestling in Review Jack America said he wasn't afraid of a little competition, especially with a 'joke of a promotion' like ECXW and that for the June tour he would be taking GAW to the home of ECXW itself, Miami. However, he did sarcasticly point out that they couldn't use the same venue as ECXW, not only because it was a dump, but because GAW just has more fans in Miami than ECXW do! The only man at the time signed to both GAW & ECXW, Thomas Beaumont, made his choice, and quit ECXW in the middle of their monthly show. He ran down Cindy Austin and enthused about the golden age of wrestling before being chased out of the building by security still in his wrestling gear! However, his outburst did make an impact on some of the fans who by late May were already pre-booking tickets to GAW's first show in Miami. GAW TITLE CHANGES http://imageshack.us/a/img88/1709/gawallamerican.jpg Beginning the month Blair Brunzell was the reigning GAW All-American Champion. However at the start of the tour Rudy Single declared he wanted gold around his waist. Everyone assumed that he meant he was targeting Heavyweight Champ Kay Pasa but on the third show of the tour he pulled some strings and faced Blair for the All-American Title. The pair put on a very impressive showing (the match was rated a B- by Wrestling in Review) but Single came out on top as the new champion. However, on the Tour Finale show Single offered an open challenge which was answered by home-town hero 'Mr Hawaii' Dwaine Kai. The pair put on an impressive match and in a shock ending Kai pinned Single clean to end the tour as the GAW All-American Champion. http://imageshack.us/a/img528/251/gawtagteam.jpg The Tag Team Tournament ended on the Tout Finale show with the combined over 50 years in ring experience of Ali Ababwa & Steamboat Hudson winning the day and defeating the ice cold team of The Arctic Alliance, Nytro & Tundra, for the GAW American Tag Team Titles. http://imageshack.us/a/img690/274/gawworld.jpg GAW World Heavyweight Champion Kay Pasa was challenged by various people for his title over the tour but ended the tour still champion. ******************** So there you have it, the May Tour of Golden Age Wrestling. He said had become obvious that if you were not American you just don't get a break in GAW. So screw America! Jack America came out and had some choice words for the pair, but was jumped by Hoss Hennessey, Jose Angel Garces & Ferocious CHI and beaten down. American Standard, Gary Woods & Kenny Foreman came to make the save and the eight men brawled until security could break them up. Jack America then challenged the forieners to tag matches on the following week's show. In week two's show Atonga & Hoss Hennessey destroyed Machine USA (Gary Woods & Kenny Foreman), leaving them requiring medical attention, but The All Americans (Jack America & American Standard) beat JAG & CHI in a match that was far greater than the sum of it's parts. However Atonga & Hennessey attacked The All Americans after their match and left the pair down and out. On this show Perle ditched his safari suit in favour of a tuxedo & top-hat and began refering to himself as the Diplomat. On the third show The Diplomat announced that the American team would not be performing this week due the the savage beating they received at the hands of his 'United Nations' and so his men would just have to face off against other American scum this week. But first he invited Alligator Stu to the ring and offered him a place in the 'UN'. Stu told him to '...stick it where the sun don't shine, mate!' and promptly got beat down by the UN. Atonga went on to beat Rick E. Waters and Hennessey beat Duane Davies. JAG & CHI faced off with Christian Alexander & Johnny Cross (on loan for the night from SWA) but lost due to the ref spotting interference by The Diplomat and disqualifing the UN team. Alexander & Cross were then beaten down by Atonga & Hennessey until Jack America in street clothes ran in through the crowd and cleared house. He then challenged the four men to a Four on Four Elimination Match on the Tour Finale show. At the start of the Tour Finale show the UN attacked Team USA captain Jack America, seemingly leaving him down and out. When the match came around only the other three members of Team USA made it to the ring, making the match a Handicap Elimination match. The UN made short work of American Standard, Woods & Foreman but just as Ferocious CHI pinned American Standard Jack America ran to the ring with a bandage around his head but otherwise fit to go. America eliminated JAG & CHI in short order and after Hoss Hennessey managed to eliminate himself by count-out while fighting both members of Machine USA on the outside it came down to Jack America vs Atonga. After the referee was knocked down, Atonga locked in a Full Nelson and seemed to have the match won but the ref was still down. Atonga broke the hold and went to rouse the ref but in that time Jack America managed to get to his feet and as Atonga turned back America hit a surprise Patriot Bomb before locking in his patented Patriot Stretch. Despite Atonga making it to the ropes Jack dragged him back and Atonga was left with no choice but to tap out, giving Team USA the victory. Following the match Hoss Hennessey walked out on the group in disgust. BEAUMONT P.I. IS ON THE CASE http://imageshack.us/a/img13/9099/thomasbeaumontalt3.jpg The start of the August tour also saw the GAW American Tag Team Champions, Ali Ababwa & Steamboat Hudson, have their title belts stolen by a person or persons unknown. So they hired Beaumont P.I. to investigate. Beaumont followed leads over the next two shows, 'interogating' early suspects 'gang-member' Lil' Swag & 'street thug' The Brooklyn Bully in the ring before uncovering who was really behind the theft, The Bootleggers, Cousin Floyd & Cousin Travis. On the final show the champs Ababwa & Hudson demanded their titles back but the Bootleggers wouldn't give them up without a fight. However, the champions managed to retain, but only due to Cousin Floyd going after Beaumont at ringside leaving Cousin Travis no choice but to tap out to the Camel Clutch. Given that they had the titles back and had delivered the thieves a beating the champs decided not to press charges. DIRK ROBERSON THINKS BIG http://imageshack.us/a/img213/7107/dirkrobertsonalt.jpghttp://imageshack.us/a/img849/9866/rudysingle.jpg Beaumont's old tag partner Dirk Robertson also began his singles career in style. Coming out with his hair slicked back, dressed in a purple robe and with the hot daughter of wrestling legend Terry Thunder on his arm, Robertson got over really well with the GAW LA crowd, most of which grew up watching Guy Lothario & Rudy Single do the exact same act in the RAWA. In fact, it was RAWA legend and new GAW World Heavyweight Champion Rudy Single who took the brunt of Robertson's tongue-lashing. However, Single is not one to take things lying down and even offered Robertson a title match... but only if he could defeat 3 other legends over the next few weeks, and that night he would be facing former GAW All-American Champion Blair Brunzell. Robertson managed to defeat Brunzell by throwing some kind of white power in the legend's eyes (this kayfabe would keep Brunzell out of action till the September tour but in reality Brunzell had been trying to work through a bicep injury for a while and just need to take the time to rest), and Rudy Single came out after the match to tell Robertson that he would be facing another legend next week, and chances are he would now be out for revenge, the other Bullet, B. Brian Browne! On week two's show Robertson managed to defeat Browne with a surprise roll-up after playing possum while Jess distracted Browne from the outside. Rudy Single once again came out to reveal the final hurdle for Robertson, a man who was a multi-time champion on his native continent, European Legend, Lukas Meunecker. Robertson once again managed to defeat his opponent on the third show of the tour, this time using the belt of his robe to choke Meunecker and wear him down while the ref wasn't looking, before hitting his new finisher, the Fabulous Back Breaker (Backstabber) and getting the pin. Rudy Single came out, actually looking impressed. He told Robertson he was a man of his word and accepted Dirk's title challenge. On the tour finale show the title match actually featured as the semi-main event and Robertson put on an impressive display against the RAWA legend. At one point the two men almost seemed to be having a 'cheat-off', both using underhanded tactics to try and take the advantage. However Single's experience won out in the end and after 'accidentally' shoving the ref at Robertson Single managed to hit the Flying Elbow Smash to retain the title. It should be noted that by the end of the month Dirk Robertson went from being considered to be in the lower card to being firmly considered ready to hang with the upper members of the card by the fans, despite his non-legend status. The feud followed the usual format of Kinsella vs Law & Binks vs Pasa on show one, Kinsella vs Binks & Pasa vs Law on show two, a face vs heel tag match on show three where the teams fell apart and finally a Fatal 4Way Match in the Main Event of the Tour Finale show, the winner of which would be declared #1 Contender to the GAW World Heavyweight Title. After a pretty long by GAW standards match (20mins) Shay Kinsella came out on top after hitting the Urbana Native (Superkick) on all three opponents before covering Revolver Binks for the win. Rudy Single had stayed at ringside to provide guest commentary and after the match got into the ring and offered his hand to Kinsella who, after encouragement from the crowd, shook it. Rudy raised Kinsella's hand and the crowd cheered... suddenly Kinsella hit the Urbana Native on Single, dropping the legend to the mat. Kinsella picked up the GAW World Heavyweight Title, looked at it while the crowd booed and dropped it on to Single's fallen body. At this point Kay Pasa realised what was going on and chased Kinsella out of the ring. The show ended with Kay Pasa raising Rudy Single's hand to the applause of the crowd. INDUSTRY CHANGES August saw some changes in the lay-out of the US scene as first the touring, crazy, high-flying Wrestlasaurus X was opened by El Maritchi, then in week 4 Wrestling Without Borders, booked by retired former GAW World Heavyweight Champion 'Dr Texas' Terry Rapada, closed its doors. It seemed that after initially throwing money at the promotion owner Maxwell Zimmer lost confidence and offered to sell the promotion to Rapada. The pair put on impressive performances, with one or both of them headlining every night of the tour: The first show saw the pair wrestle with the GAW World Heavyweight Title on the line, but the referee declared the match a draw when both men were counted out brawling on the outside. It took the lockeroom emptying to seperate the two men. The second show saw Kinsella team with Canadian Hoss Hennessey to beat the team of Rudy Single and Lukas Meunecker with Hennessey pinning Meunecker with a Jacknife Powerbomb. From this point on Hennessey never left Kinsella's side. The third show saw Single & Kinsella pick opponents for each other as a 'warm-up' for their second title match at the Tour Finale show. Unsurprisingly, Kinsella chose Hoss Hennessey to face Single. Single took a hell of a beating but managed to use his experience and the fact that he is not above cheating, even as a good guy, to win the match. In return Single went for a leftfield choice and chose CWT star and local legend Smokin' Stevie Gunn to face Kinsella. Gunn and Kinsella put on a brilliant match (well deserving of its main event slot) and Kinsella looked strong throughout but a miss-timed interferance from Hennessey left Kinsella reeling and gave the Tennessee legend Stevie Gunn the chance to hit his Both Barrels finisher to win the match. And so at the Tour Finale show the pair faced off for the final time. It was a particularly intense match and it could have gone either way a number of times, with Kinsella constantly working over Single's right knee, even Hennessey got in on the action and wrapped Single's knee around the ringpost several times while Kinsella distracted the ref. But finally, after the referee had to ban Hoss Hennessey from ringside, Rudy Single looked to have the match won. But as he ran the ropes to hit his patented Flying Elbow Smash on a dazed Kinsella Single's right knee gave out from under him and he crashed to the mat. Kinsella shook off the cobwebs and, after applying a rest hold for a minute, stood an obviously in real pain Single up, gave the crowd a cocky smile and Urbana Natived his way to becoming the GAW World Heavyweight Champion! It was later confirmed that Rudy Single had, in fact, sustained a legitimate injury, the punishment being to much for the forty-six year old's over-abused knee joint to take. The injury would lead to Rudy Single being out of in-ring action for the rest of the year. Jack America told Wrestling in Review that it was a real shame that Single was injured, in fact he was due to retain the title but apparently when Single felt his knee go he knew he was done for a while, maybe for ever, and told Kinsella to go for the pin. Jack said he had no problem with Single making that call, anyone who's been in that ring knows that sometimes things just have to go with the flow for the best. Waters), The Bootleggers (Cousin Floyd & Cousin Travis), The UN (JAG & Ferocious CHI), Team OZ (Alligator Stu & GAW All-American Champion Dwaine Kai) and debuting team, The Hart Stoppers, Adam & Kyle Hart (aka Newton Cambridge & Kosmo Supreme). The final team to enter was a late entry comprised of Beaumont, P.I. and his new sidekick Vito (Vercetti), The #1 Detective Agency. On show one: The #1 Detective Agency defeated The UN The Eastside Wrecking Crew defeated The Flying Bullets The Street Survivors defeated The Hart Stoppers The Bootleggers defeated Team OZ On show two: The Eastside Wrecking Crew defeated The #1 Detective Agency The Street Survivors defeated The Bootleggers On show three: The Eastside Wrecking Crew defeated The Street Survivors And on the Tour Finale show The Eastside Wrecking Crew defeated GAW American Tag Team Champions Ali Ababwa & Steamboat Hudson, ending the legends' four month run with the titles. In an interview with Wrestling in Review Ababwa & Hudson were both very open with their praise of the way Jack America was running things in GAW, and thought the way Jack was slowly transitioning things to the younger stars while still keeping the legends relevant and pushed hard could only lead to good things for GAW in the coming months. Hudson added that he in particular wanted to publicly thank Jack America for giving him the chance to run with a title for a while, just once before he considers hanging up his boots for good. When questioned if that meant Hudson was retiring he told WiR that it wasn't far off, but there is still life in the old sea-dog yet! THIRD TITLE CHANGE! http://imageshack.us/a/img88/1709/gawallamerican.jpg And in a 'Lottery Month' of random title defenses for GAW All-American Champion Dwaine Kai following his team's elimination from the Tag Team Tournament. On show two Kai successfully defended his title against former tag partner Ferocious CHI, The Diplomat having 'rigging the vote', but failing for a second week to get close to a title with the word 'America' in it's name. On show three the champ successfully defended his title against Cousin Floyd in a surprisingly good match that showed the pair have excellent chemistry in the ring. But on the Tour Finale show Kai was brought short by the cunning of 'Simply Fabulous' Dirk Robertson and his 'lurve thang' Jess Thunder. Kai looked to have the match won and went to run the ropes and hit The People's Legdrop but Jessica Thunder pulled down the top rope and Kai went crashing to the outside. After recovering and fetching Kai back into the ring at the 9 count Robertson went for the Fabulous Back Breaker but Kai reversed it and went for the Honalulu Hop (Book End) but then Robertson reversed that and hit his patented backbreaker for the win to become the new GAW All-American Champion. When asked by Wrestling in Review why Jack America had decided to have all the titles change hands on the same night his answer was simple... because people don't expect it! At the start of the month both of The Devastators and Crash decided to return to action after a very short time away from the ring. The Devastators went on record as saying that '...watching TV all day ain't what it's cracked up to be brother!' and Crash apparently has spent so long away from the day-to-day running of his wrestling school that the place practically runs itself and he found himself actually getting in the way.
