Victory Wrestling Association: Saving Grace

Wrestling has long been an under-appreciated sport on the European continent, not able to compare with the established soccer and rugby leagues amongst others. This was hit even harder in May 2007 when Luis Figo Manico decided to close the doors of his hugely popular Ultimate Combat Ring. European wrestling is rocked, but from the demise of one promotion came the birth of two new ones. Two new ones that are direct competition to the newest and most well-funded of Europe’s young promotions, the Victory Wrestling Association. This could be Europe’s opportunity to compete with the well-established American, British, Japanese, Mexican, Canadian and even Australian markets that it’s lags horribly behind.

Whilst Ultimate European Wrestling and European Wrestling All-Stars were born out of the departure of Manico and his promotion, VWA was set up without the politics and hostility that surrounds the other European companies. Swiss businessman and multi-millionaire, Albert Thorp personally invested one million dollars of his own fortune to get the VWA off the ground. A smart business man, Thorp decided to create his own unique style mixing various popular elements of other companies; this ‘ultimate hybrid’ style also dictated that no tag teams or alliances were made. Ironically, the company based around this style of each star being somewhat neutral and not being tied to an alliance is born out of Europe’s neutral zone, Switzerland!

The melting pot of wrestling concepts that forms the basis of the company is also a melting pot of wrestlers with stars coming from South Africa, Germany, America, Sweden and countless other countries. This international feel and the youthfulness of many of these workers count greatly towards what could be an impressive future for the VWA. Only time will tell whether the youthful exuberance and talent of people like Landon Mallory and Sebastian Koller, coupled with the experience of stars such as Randy Haute and Griffin can forge a legacy within the European and possibly even the world wrestling arena. Can they lead to a reinvention of Europe as a wrestling hotbed or will they ultimately stumble and not get out of the blocks?

Victory Wrestling Association has the chance to be European wrestling's saving grace; can it live up to that bold ambition or will it stand on the edge of greatness only to collapse under the weight of it's own lofty expectations?

VWA Into The Fire

VENUE: BREMEN HALL, GERMANY

ATTENDANCE: 300 (SELL-OUT)

Sebastian Koller opens the show in the ring, promising to wow the crowds with a rock and rollin' performance. He makes note of the fact van Cleer has held the belt before, but promises that the belt isn't slipping from his grasp again. Tonight, title defence number six will be just that, another defence of his hard-earned crown. (E+)

RANDY HAUTE vs LANDON MALLORY

The crowd are very much into the first match of the night. Mallory starts very well, with some big power moves before Haute swings the momentum with his chain wrestling skill. Zoning in on the South African's legs in an attempt to subdue him, Haute soon gains a solid advantage with Mallory hobbling around the ring seeking a reprise.

Following a baseball slide to take Landon to his knees, Haute attempts to seal the deal but is shocked as Mallory draws energy from nowhere to stand up, step aside and line up for a shoulder charge. Randy shows his experience though to avoid it and then cheaply rolls-up Mallory with a fistful of tights to score the three count.

WINNER: RANDY HAUTE (E)

---

Randy Haute is walking backstage, a strut to his step following his earlier victory. Haute runs into Jasmine Perlot who is walking through the backstage area. He asks if she just saw his match; she tries to ignore him but he continues to pursue her, stating that she he'd happily pin her down too - Perlot continues to ignore him unphased by his arrogance. Throughout the whole encounter, Haute fails to notice Perlot's client, Wild Child, sitting in a parked car listening in on the conversation with a smug grin across his face. (E-)

KRONOS vs ANTONIO ARIAS

This one was over before it really began as Kronos unleashed a series of power moves, leaving the much smaller Arias struggling for breath and certainly unable to utilise his speed or high-risk maneuveres. The deal is sealed when Kronos plants the Spaniard with massive powerbomb and covers him for the three count.

WINNER: KRONOS (E-)

---

Griffin and Jasper January are in the locker room, both stretching out in preperation for their matches. Griffin offers some veteran words of advice to the young Belgian telling him to focus his mind completely on his opponent. January nods but doesn't appear to have been too moved by the Swede's words, turning to him and simply saying that he doesn't need advice. Tonight, he's going to go out there and win - and that maybe Griffin should take his own advice onboard! Griffin looks less than impressed at the youngster's cockiness. (E)

MATTHEW MACKS vs JASPER JANUARY

Macks really takes this one to January; the crowd rallying behind him as he shows dominance in the air early on. January attempts an early fightback with some brawling but is easily taken back down by a picture-perfect dropkick. However as the match wears on, it's clear the pair aren't too comfortable with each other and the match soon becomes a little disjointed as a botched suicide dive leaves Macks gasping for air on the outside. January is able to stall, but the crowd don't really like it and he has to fight to gain the momentum once Macks returns to the ring. Going up top, though, he manages to land a moonsault before finishing the Irishman off with a Leap Year and pinfall.

WINNER: JASPER JANUARY (E-)

GRIFFIN vs CUB BALOWICZ

This one starts with a bang as the pair's contrasting styles collide; Balowicz pummeling away at Griffin's ribs only to be pushed back by a series of brutal knife edge chops. Balowicz eventually gains the upperhand in that contest and looks to land an early finish as he swings his left hook. It fails to connect though and he's dropped to the floor into a chickenwing crossface; the Swede having caught his arm.

This doesn't last though as Balowicz is able to make it to the ropes, regain his focus and take control once more despite Griffin's best attempts to take him back to the mat. He manages to hit a Swinging DDT for a near fall, before the dazed Griffin walks straight into a Knock Out Left Hook and the pinfall.

WINNER: CUB BALOWICZ (D-)

VWA EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP

SEBASTIAN KOLLER vs WALKER VAN CLEER

There isn't anything to choose between these two upstarts - the large majority of the match is spent going back and forth, momentum shifting from Koller to van Cleer and back with neither managing to truly dominate. The Dutchman looks most likely to score the win for the majority, managing a couple of near falls.

However, as the match wears on and with both men visibly tiring, Koller is able to steal in and take control like a champion should; dropping his challenger with a superkick. As van Cleer stumbles back to his feet, he is taken straight back to the mat with the Hamburg Rock City and like that Koller succeeds in his sixth title defence, much to the delight of the packed house.

WINNER: SEBASTIAN KOLLER (E+)

In The Spotlight: Wild Child

HOMETOWN: STUTTGART, GERMANY http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v205/rdarnz/VWA/Flags/germany_zpse10e94e0.png

THEME MUSIC: WHERE IS MY MIND BY PIXIES

TITLE HISTORY: NONE

SIGNATURE MOVE: WILD THING

Wild Child has lived a somewhat dysfunctional life so far - living with drug-addicted parents in the rough streets, he didn’t have the easiest of upbringings. However, through these troublesome years he showed great strength, learning to fend for himself and most of all he became somewhat obsessed with his dream of becoming a wrestling superstar. Challenging other kids his age to brawls in his backyard, he started to hone what would one day become his craft; the hardcore craft that is.

Fighting in makeshift rings, propped up by whatever scrap he could find, and often using this same scrap as weapons, he and a small group of friends emulated what they were seeing from some of the cult promotions so rampant in America - blood, violence and pure determined insanity. However, as his friends started to move on, seeking to get university degrees and good grades - no doubt prompted by their parents, the young Wild Child was left languishing and for a while, he did what his name may suggest and roamed the neighbourhoods as a wild child.

Finally though, his calling was to come - spotted by a young promoter who was coming through the area on tour, he was snapped up - his passion for the industry blatantly clear even if the way he was going about getting into it wasn’t recommended. For almost a year, the promoter took the young German along to all his venues as he hosted independent shows, often giving him tasks like setting up the ring, but all the while the youngster was able to gain valuable experience and eventually debuted on the independent scene as a crazed youngster that many teenagers seemed to relate to.

To this day, Wild Child remains that crazed, almost psychotic youngster willing to inflict pain in innovative new ways, willing to throw his body out there, take the perilous risks only a maniac would. With his persistence and willingness to risk all, he came to the spotlight within VWA with another nutcase, the ‘Irish Daredevil’ Matthew Macks and this feud still hasn’t seen its last broken table, crazy ladder jump or whatever else these two can dream up. Suspended from the company after being caught smoking something he shouldn't in 2011, he has since teamed up with the young French beauty, Jasmine Perlot, who is trying to lead him onto a safer path. Maybe this young man can be turned around and maybe the maniac that resides within him can be put to rest?!

WILD CHILD vs NIGHT SPYDER

In a very low-key start to the night, Night Spyder takes it to Wild Child with some acrobatic skills on display from both men. Wild Child has a lot of the early going, shifting momentum after a huge hurricanrana sending the Finn to the outside; followed by a suicide dive that left both men staggering back to their feet and stumbling into the ring to avoid a count-out.

However, following this Randy Haute made his presence known skulking down to the ring with his eyes on Jasmine Perlot. This distracted Wild Child who walked straight into a head scissors takedown and locking in the Spyder's Web; that he succumbed to after fighting to reach the ropes and failing. Haute meanwhile, snuck away following the bell walking backwards up the ramp eyes still fixed on Perlot.

WINNER: NIGHT SPYDER (F+)

---

Backstage, Randy Haute is approached by a fuming Wild Child who berates him over his ongoing stalking of the latter's manager. Haute defends himself stating that Perlot is an attractive individual like himself and that she chose him. Wild Child is sturrgling to control his temper as Haute continues to deny any wrongdoing, but what neither man sees is Jasmine Perlot sitting round the corner listening in with a sly grin on her face. (E-)

MODERN DAY WARLORD vs JASON DEMPSEY

Despite the utter contempt the crowd displayed towards the big Norwegian, Modern Day Warlord got the job done. He didn't quite dominate his opponent, as the Englishman was able to give him the run around and several times had the advantage; however size did end up being the difference maker and Warlord's powerful Big Foot was enough to drop Dempsey to the canvas for a pinfall at the ten minute mark.

WINNER: MODERN DAY WARLORD (E)

KRONOS vs THUNDERBOLT

Kronos once again demonstrated his ability to dominate an opponent with clubbing blows and gut-wrenching tosses and slams. Thunderbolt; the victim of the assault struggled to entertain any sort of counter attack or even defensive manouevere in a highly one-sided affair with Thunderbolt proving his talent selling everything thrown his way. A massive powerbomb from Kronos confirms the inevitable after nearly seven minutes of dominance.

WINNER: KRONOS (E)

ANTONIO ARIAS vs LAURO GIORDANO

The aerial combat and speed of Lauro Giordano left Arias struggling to cope; the Spaniard unable to ground his feisty opponent, and definitely unable to take him to a more comfortable position on the mat. Giordano wrapped this one up after a rather awkward contest with a pinfall after nailing the Fall Of Rome.

WINNER: LAURO GIORDANO (E+)

WALKER VAN CLEER vs RANDY HAUTE vs CUB BALOWICZ

Moving on, the three way face off for number one contendership comes tearing out the blocks with Balowicz, Haute and van Cleer not holding anything back; all three men determined to stake their claim at the title. Balowicz held the upper ground early on with his rough, brutish style subduing any attempts to take him to ground with the match resembling a fight more than anything else.

However, following his failure to capitalise on his dominance, he is eventually dropped to the canvas by Haute who manages to tie him up but not for long as the pair stumble back to their feet after Cub has escaped the leg lock and are double clotheslined to the outside. Walker then lives up to his nickname, hitting a High Elevation Cross Body to both men from the top to the outside before managing to roll Randy back into the ring for the three count.

WINNER: WALKER VAN CLEER (E+)

---

Directly following the match, van Cleer grabs a microphone and proclaims himself the number one contender once more. He says that Sebastian Koller better watch his back because you can fool this Dutchman once but you don't get to fool him twice. He then lays down the challenge to the champion to defend his VWA European title once more and this time he guarantees there will be no deja vu - the result will be different. (E+)

VWA SWISS CHAMPIONSHIP

LANDON MALLORY vs JASPER JANUARY

The main event of the evening has the crowd pumped; January serves to pump them up more, dominating the early proceedings with a string of acrobatic handsprings and various other eye-catching moves. Mallory to his credit was able to withstand the majority of the Belgian's attacks and eventually take control.

The big South African uses his larger frame to subdue Jasper, hitting back at a couple of clothesline attempts with shoulder charges that send his opponent staggering backwards, clearly winded. The momentary lapse in concentration as January tries to collect himself is enough for Landon to nail him with the Springbok Ram and roll him up for title defence five.

WINNER: LANDON MALLORY (E+)

---

Mallory remains in the ring following the match, celebrating another successful defence of his crown. Out of nowhere, Cub Balowicz appears with a maniacal grin across his face - he slides into the ring and without giving Landon a chance to react lays him out with his trademark Knock Out Left Hook. He stands over the fallen champion, eyes fixed on the belt that is now lying on the canvas a couple of feet from the South African's fallen body. (E+)
