Minnesota Timberwolves: Rewriting history (1989 - ... )

Recommended Posts

Intro:

I started following the NBA three years ago and kind of started rooting for the Timberwolves then, mainly because I felt sorry for them. I also started liking double-double machine Kevin Love. I don’t know why, but I always prefer underdogs over favorites (like the Miami Heat). I’m still following them and things are looking brighter since the arrival of Ricky Rubio. If they can keep him and Love for a few years I think they’ll be making some playoff runs.

I also want to play through some years when Larry Bird and Michael Jordan were still active, and since the Timberwolves were founded in 1989 this seems like a good year to start in.

This is the first game I start, so I will be learning the game as I play. My goal is to do better than the Timberwolves in real life:

- .397 Win/Loss percentage

- 8 playoff appearances in 24 seasons

- 1 conference final

A look at the team:

Budget:

Team Budget: $10.780.000

Salary Cap: $9.800.000

Current Salary: $3.225.952

CENTERS:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/02_BradLohaus_zps86f78d1f.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/01_GaryLeonard_zps02f3c7f5.gif

Lohaus is a big man that can shoot, but I’d prefer to have a better rebounder at center, and his inside shot isn’t good either for a man that’s basically on the inside all the time. Leonard is just bad. He’s a decent defender, but that’s it.

POWER FORWARDS:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/03_SteveJohnson_zps2f7e172f.gif

I’ve only got one PF at the moment, which is not enough, clearly. Johnson isn’t really starting material, but he’ll have to do I guess. It’s good that he’s a bit of an all-rounder.

SMALL FORWARDS:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/08_TonyCampbell_zpsf3c23e7c.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/09_TyroneCorbin_zps14da6135.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/05_DonaldRoyal_zps780194d5.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/04_TodMurphy_zps7973d860.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/07_SamMitchell_zps8420c0ac.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/06_ScottRoth_zps1fc9d83c.gif

Campbell and Corbin are both very usable, Royal, Murphy, Mitchell and Roth are all decent backups, but six small forwards is a bit too much. I’ll probably trade at least three of them away, in first instance for a power forward, and if possible for some extra backup at front- and backcourt.

SHOOTING GUARDS:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/10_AdrianBranch_zpsb6071f71.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/11_DougWest_zps45382957.gif

Both are of equal value I suppose. West is better on offense, but Branch is better on defense.

POINT GUARDS:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/12_PoohRichardson_zps629fc06e.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/13_SidneyLowe_zps19516721.gif

Richardson is my best player at the moment I guess. He’s an awesome passer, and a great scorer and defender as well. It’s also nice that he’s got a pretty cheap 4-year contract. Lowe is a good defender and a decent ball handler, but he won’t score much I think.

Closing thoughts:

My team is pretty weak on rebounding and inside offense. We’ll get crushed by teams with a great center or a great power forward. I’ll need to find some good big men for up front in next year’s draft I guess. My backcourt is pretty solid, but could use a better backup point guard.

This looks pretty cool, I myself have been running an NBA league from 1946 onward so I love these historical leagues. It should be cool to see how this turns out.

Maybe you should start your own dynasty ;)

But I agree, this looks great. Are you able to play from '89 to '13 with the real life draftees?

Nice I like the pics you added to the player files. Dumb question but I don't see support for that in the game in the player editor. Is there a way to add pics in the game or are you editing them in after doing a screen print.

I am also playing a Sonics 1980 game that I am just more messing around with but it is interesting going back to the season after they won and seeing Gus Williams sit out that year. I am fairing better than they did that year so far and have managed to get a lot of draft picks to rebuild the team around Sikma.

Anyway good luck getting the T-wolves off to a more successful franchise, I will be watching and reading.

I add them to the game. I read somewhere in the development journal how they have to be named.

They have to be named firstname_lastname.jpg (Example: michael_jordan.jpg) and have to be put in the folder: ...\GDS\Fast Break Pro Basketball 3\images\photos

The size the photo's are shown in-game is 56 x 77.

This is quite the challenge. I mean, Pooh Richardson and Brad Lohaus are probably your two best players. That's ridiculously unfair.

But, hey, build through the draft and make some smart signings and who knows, the T-Wolves could end up becoming a dynasty.

1989-1990 Preseason

Free Agency

Since there are no free agents, there’s not much to say about it.

<hr/>

My Trades:

LA LAKERS GET:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/06_ScottRoth_zps1fc9d83c.gif

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES GET:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/1989-1990/Players/Mark_McNamara_zpsf77c1cea.gif

Why?

I have too much SF’s and needed another Power Forward. I knew I wasn’t going to get any good quality players, so I settled for a below average player with a one year contract.

<hr/>

WASHINGTON WIZARDS GET:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/05_DonaldRoyal_zps780194d5.gif

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/_Prologue/07_SamMitchell_zps8420c0ac.gif

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES GET:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/1989-1990/Players/Mel_Turpin_zpsf36a32d7.gif

Why?

Since I wasn’t getting anything decent for just Royal or just Mitchell I decided to put them in a package and try to get some quality. PF was the position that I needed a better starter, so I started going through the teams from A to W and the last team on the list had the best option. Could’ve gotten a better PF, but he had a 4-year contract of $1.5M, so I decided to pick someone a bit cheaper. Turpin is a decent player and will hopefully give us some of the much needed rebounding skills.

<hr/>

Other trades:

Indiana trade SF Chuck Person to Philadelphia.

Philadelphia trade PG Johnny Dawkins to Indiana.

<hr/>

Preseason Results:

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/1989-1990/Other/1_PreseasonResults_zps9248efc5.gif

Quite hopeful results, as you can see everything stands and falls with Richardson’s performances. In the blowout loss to Cleveland he only played for 15 minutes for some reason and it showed in the result. In the preseason predictions we are last in our division. I hope to prove those predictions are wrong.

Well you defended the home court in the pre-season and your right it looks like as Pooh Richardson goes so do the T-Wolves. How are you in terms of the salary cap with the current line up and how many contracts are just 1 year deals? A couple of good drafts and a top notch FA signing and you might be in business.

I like the trades you did. Turpin is definitely serviceable and good on the boards. That was a good find and you didn't give up much for him.

Thanks for the tip on the pics, I will have to try that.

I am still learning how to post stuff on this with graphics etc, but I like the way you were able to frame the stats. If you copy from word/excel/notepad, they do not keep the proper spacing. When I have time I will have to tinker with that stuff more.

I'm still 5.7M below the cap. Steve Johnson, Mark McNamara, Adrian Branch and Sidney Lowe have one year contracts. Unless they truly impress me this season, I don't think I'll keep any of them.

1990 Round 1 Draft Pick (Atlanta)</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Why? </strong></p><p>

I’m not going to win any titles this year, so I should be looking for ways to improve my team next year. The hawks offered me this trade and they had a 2-6 record at that time, which means this could become a pretty early draft pick. Another reason was that my backup SG Doug West was doing better than Branch. </p><p> </p><p>

Well, the preseason-predictions prove to be true up until now. Were in last place in our division, but at least we’re not the worst team in the NBA. Washington and Detroit are worse and we could slip past Denver as well if we get a good run now. In comparison to the real life Timberwolves we’re doing great however. They had a 22-60 (.268) record this season. </p><p>

Another less positive remark is that the Atlanta Hawks draft pick I got in a trade might not be as good as it seemed the day I made the deal. They’re a borderline playoff team at the moment.</p></div><p></p><p></p>

We did surprisingly well after the trade deadline. I gave some of my worst players less minutes and added a few to those deserving more. I also made it so that players could play at more than one position. This helps me avoid using really bad players like Sidney Lowe too much for example. I have a 15-13 record after the trade deadline, which give me some hope for next season. By the way, you might have noticed that Pooh Richardson was out for a few games (from 21-37 to 23-39) and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.</p><p> </p><p>

I mainly base myself on their performance rating when deciding how much minutes a player gets to play. That and the skills they have of course. I feel the ‘averages’ in the statistics don’t say all I need to know about a player. A player may be underrated because he doesn’t get many touches or chances in a game, yet if he scores more of those than the guy who thinks he’s Kobe Bryant taking 30+ shots a game, scoring 25 points… That’s why I like the sabermetrics better. </p><p> </p><p>

So, about the players themselves then… Pooh Richardson is clearly my PG for the next few years. Unless I get a very high draft pick or a trade I can’t refuse of course. He can score, he can pass and he gets me some steals as well. Doug West did much better than expected, which was a pleasant surprise. Steve Johnson also had a good season for a man of his caliber. McNamara, Leonard and Long didn’t really give me what I wanted out of them. </p><p> </p><p>

<hr/></p><p>

<span style="font-size:14px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Standings:</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

Pretty funny considering the Detroit Pistons won the NBA championship this year in real life with those players (Dennis Rodman, Isiah Thomas …). They have a .171 WL percentage, which puts them in third place on the worst teams ever list (in the year 1990 of course, there have been worse teams later on). </p><p> </p><p>

I’m pretty satisfied with my own performance. We have 11 more wins than the real life Timberwolves, which is quite a lot I think. My home record (25-16) is very good, but I suck on the road (8-33). We leave 4 teams behind us and finished with the same record as the spurs. Let’s hope we get lucky in the draft lottery. </p><p> </p><p>

<p>That's one more title than Run-TMC ever won in real life. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

Interesting season stats...I believe Tony Campbell's breakout year was his first with the T-Wolves, and was scoring over 20-22 ppg after warming the bench for both the Pistons and the Lakers in the '80s. Hopefully Pooh's career trajectory won't be going south soon after his rookie year, just as it did in real life. Also, it's good to see you got some mileage out of "Dinner Bell" Mel Turpin (RIP)! He could've been more than a decent NBA center, but had too many weight problems in his playing days...</p><p> </p><p>

All in all, 33-49 is a great record for an expansion team. Makes me wonder how well I'll do when I start my diary game with the '66-67 Bulls or '67-68 Rockets...</p>

In total Isiah was injured for 60 days, yet he still played 72 games. I've looked into it a bit and Bill Laimbeer was injured more than half the season as well. Still, 14-68 is really bad even without Isiah and Lambeer.

And yup, Golden State won despite being the fourth seed. Beating Boston in the finals 4-0 is really something special.

Since Steve Johnson isn't getting any younger, perhaps Tyrone Hill or Loy Vaught would be good choices at PF.</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> Mark Aguirre played 82/82 games.</p><p> Dennis Rodman played 82/82 games.</p><p> Joe Dumars played 76/82 games.</p><p> Isiah Thomas played 74/82 games.</p><p> Bill Laimbeer played 42/82 games.</p>

<span style="font-size:14px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Draft Lottery:</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

Guess what, I got very lucky and get to pick first in the draft! The pick I got in a trade from Atlanta is the 15th. I’m in doubt about who to pick, Gary Payton (PG) or Derrick Coleman ©. Payton might be the better player in the long term, but I can become an immediate playoff contender with Coleman on the team I think as I’ve already got a good PG.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:14px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">1990 Draft:</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>1. Minnesota - Derrick Coleman ©</strong></p><p>

2. Denver - Gary Payton (PG)</p><p>

3. Detroit - Kendall Gill (SG)</p><p>

4. Washington - Felton Spencer ©</p><p>

8. Orlando - Terry Mills (PF)</p><p>

9. Charlotte - Mario Elie (SG)</p><p>

10. Sacramento - Marcus Liberty (SG)</p><p>

<span style="font-size:14px;"><strong><span style="text-decoration:underline;">My picks:</span></strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/1990-1991/Players/01_DerrickColeman_zps09c7aa7d.gif</span></p><p> </p><p>

My new powerhouse at center. Much more useful than Brad Lohaus in my opinion. Lohaus has the skills of small forward, but the body of a center. Coleman is big, heavy and can jump high. Him combined with Mel Turpin will give me all the rebounding I need.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/1990-1991/Players/12_MahmoudAbdulRauf_zps6f8546b1.gif</span></p><p> </p><p>

Since my backup PG Sidney Lowe is a free agent now I needed someone to replace him. Abdul-Rauf is (much) better than Lowe. He could become a great scorer in a few years. Too bad his passing isn’t really top-notch. </p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i232/tRyPi0/FBPB3/Minnesota%20Timberwolves/1990-1991/Players/05_AlaaAbdelnaby_zps00e4ac33.gif</span></p><p> </p><p>

The contracts of McNamara and Johnson ran out, so I’ve only got Mel Turpin to play at PF now. I don’t plan on using Abdelnaby much; he’s too mediocre for that.</p><p> </p><p>

<hr/></p><p>

<span style="font-size:14px;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>What’s next?</strong></span></span></p><p> </p><p>

Well, my weakest position at the moment is Shooting Guard. Doug West did a very good job last year, but I’d prefer to use him coming off the bench. So, my targets in free agency are: Starting shooting guard, possibly a better starting small forward and a better backup power forward (or a starter if the opportunity arises).</p><p> </p><p>
