[Idon'teven] UK Wrestling Association League 1

Recommended Posts

Some brief OOC comments before this gets rolling.

It's all Regis' fault.

Told you they were brief.

...

...

Well, that's actually kind of unfair. A couple of years ago there was an attempt to create a British Wrestling Premier League. This seems to've fallen through somewhat; if not, it's web footprint is astonishingly shallow. But the concept was there; teams built around cities, a league system to the scoring, etc, etc.

It stuck in my head as a cool idea. It also stuck in Regis' head. As tends to happen when that's the case, we ended up discussing how we'd do it, and later how we'd do it in TEW, and eventually, yesterday, we had a final conversation during the course of which we saw enough possibilities to try. So last night I grievously abused the C-Verse and Thunderverse databases to make myself a Leagueverse.

This is not going to be a typical Phantom Stranger diary. It doesn't replace Everybody Knows and shouldn't even slow it down much - my current intent is that the next show for that will be posted tonight. The UKWA is a touring promotion with a TV show, and I'll be posting summaries of that TV show rather than automatically of the events. You'll get match fixtures, match results, brief notes on promos and interviews, a couple of money quotes, and the Slam of the Night. Fan interaction is intended to be high; feel free to 'tweet' questions to workers in posts here and the workers will answer in or out of kayfabe according to their particular style.

Basically, this is a thought experiment I happen to be doing as a diary. It's also a chance to flesh out a bit of the British talent from both the Thunderverse and the C-Verse.

(So, why is there foreign talent? So I can have Westminster Pride, and take the piss out of Chelski.)

Any questions?

Interesting concept. ;)

I wonder though, why add the Thunderverse into the roster?

Oh, and I shall pick the Westminister Pride to win it all. ;)

You almost have it backwards.

I really loved writing Super TIGER in POW, and I'm fond of a lot of their other Brits - but there just aren't enough.

I hereby deny all responsibility for everything, ever.

But seriously, as PS says, a lot of this came from an idea I had a while ago. Me and him were discussing the lack of a British wrestling scene in the Thunderverse, and what we'd like to see done with it. The BWPL idea came from that, set up pretty much exactly as has happened here. We talked about it, and agreed it would be cool, but neither of us had a particular interest in starting a modding project, so it got shelved.

Then PS got hold of the book 'Spandex, Screwjobs And Cheap Pops', which is a collected series of articles about the IRL British wrestling scene. This got us back to talking about the idea, and to talking about a silly idea I had to re-skin an entire database, so that instead of the world you had the UK, instead of countries you had regions, and instead of regions you had cities. It would have been a ludicrously difficult idea, but it got us talking about this project, and, well, one thing led to another. And after that, we decided that this had to happen.

The T-verse/C-verse crossover is entirely down to one sentence: "You'd get to write Super TIGER again."

...the debut of the new 'pro wrestling' show from company UKWA, replacing Best of British Wrestling. At least this one only runs eight months a year. Apparently the format will be like Match of the Day, covering the two fixtures playing earlier this week. The league table will be recapped on the show and at the UKWA website.

This Friday it's going to be Bristol at home against Wigan, a fixture being played (wrestled? I don't know) this Tuesday, and Thursday's fixture, Westminster at home to Liverpool.

BRISTOL vs. WIGAN

T. Beaumont (Br) vs. D. Henderson (Wi)

Harder Better Faster Stronger (Br, P. Barnes & Menace) vs. Wigan Bulldogs (Wi, L. Price & W. Morgan)

Byron (Br) vs. Merle O'Curle (Wi)

H. Neill (Br) vs. British Samurai (Wi)

Wigan take it here with the exception of Harley Neill picking up the sole win for Bristol. In my eyes, the Wigan team are far better in terms of skill (I'm guessing UKWA is performance > pop).

WESTMINSTER vs. LIVERPOOL

M. Khoklov (We) vs. D. Stone (L)

The Van Holt Brothers (We, J & M) vs. Mersey Beatdown (L, P. Cooper & War Machine)

J. Faust & F. Higa (We) vs. 'Rolling' J. Stones & S. Blake (L)

T. Cornell (We) vs. A. Matravers (L)

Clean sweep for Westminister here, the only result I was really undecided on is the first match but power > technical skill. Westminister seem like a lock-on for winners of everything so far.

You'll note the Red Dragon is up with the Toon Army at the moment. But the maths say each league can have nine member teams, with TEW's calendar restrictions, or a LOT more, which just wasn't feasible to begin with, and an additional fixture per week. So; relegations and promotions, as is right and proper.

But those will be coming in over this first season...

i never give grades for angles in my diary either... main reason is because like you say, you set it up so that worker a and worker b get into an argument backstage... their skills in the areas you need them aren't great, but it moves the storyline along nicely... and you get like... an F... I don't see the benefit in telling everyone how poor an angle was.

Also, the way I lay my work out, there's a natural place to put a rating graphic at the end of a match, and in angles, I can never seem to find a natural place to put one... I've only ever had one person mention the lack of angle grades, and he still predicts every week :)

I get why people would be put off with no grades, as you could just be writing from the top of your head, not even using TEW at all... but it's clear that in this particular diary (since it's using some characters from the cverse) that that is not the case...

Keep up the great work, love the idea, i'll be following along and hoping an Isle of Wight team gets promoted next season ;)
