Featherweight Bout: Chad Mendes (15-1) vs. Nik Lentz (24-5-2-1 NC)

Round 1

And here we go! Mendes drops his shoulder and fakes going for a single leg, but Lentz isn't buying it. Both fighters fire off strikes, neither produces any significant damage. From the missed strikes they clinch. Mendes manages to wrestle his way into a dominant position in the grapple. Mendes has worked in the underhooks and looks to take Lentz down. Mendes doesn't get the takedown, Lentz instead wrestles his way into controlling the grapple. Using his wrestling skills, Lentz is trying to push Mendes up against the cage. Lentz can't do it though, and Mendes is able to get free. Mendes uses a nice combination as a set up, then shoots in for a takedown. Lentz attempts to avoid Mendes as he shoots in. Lentz cannot stop the takedown, and has to pull guard. Mendes starts trying to work to get past the guard. He can't quite manage to get past guard on this attempt. Lentz tries to ensnare Mendes in a triangle. In a show of great skill, Mendes spins out of the triangle attempt and gains side control. We are now at the halfway point of the round. Mendes begins trying to get himself behind Lentz. Lentz tries to escape but only succeeds in giving up his back! Lentz is in increasing trouble, as Mendes gets both hooks in. Mendes, with both hooks fully in, tries to get the rear naked choke applied. Lentz defends himself well against the choke. Lentz tries to improve his chances of survival by breaking free of the hooks, but they're too tight. We're into the final minute of the round. Mendes, with both hooks in, attempts to get a rear naked choke fully applied. Lentz fights off the rear naked choke attempt. Round one is brought to an end as time runs out.

I have to give that round to Mendes, but only a 10-9.

Round 2

And here we go, round two! Lentz tries for a left jab but Mendes moves out of range. Both fighters fire off strikes, neither produces any significant damage. They wind up in a tight clinch. From the grapple, Mendes tries to pick Lentz up on his shoulder for a slam. He gets Lentz up! Mendes slams him down, ending up in guard. Mendes looks to get past the guard. He finds himself unable to pass guard on this attempt. Lentz tries to ensnare Mendes in a triangle. Mendes pulls free of the triangle and brilliantly spins to side control. Mendes looks to roll Lentz slightly and slip behind. Mendes takes the back, Lentz could do nothing about it. Mendes gets both hooks in, and is now in a really dominant position. We move into the second half of this round. Mendes, with both hooks in, attempts to get a rear naked choke fully applied. The rear naked choke is in deep, Lentz has to tap out!

Chad Mendes takes the victory by way of submission!

He did cut an awful lot of weight for this fight, perhaps that is a contributing factor to his fatigue. Backing out of range, Weidman circles tentatively. The fight slows as Silva sits back and allows Weidman to circle. The end of the round is coming quick, there's under a minute left. Slowly moving in closer, a ragged-looking Weidman wants to wrestle Silva. Weidman grabs Silva and pulls him into a grapple. Chris Weidman seems to be fighting against exhaustion. Using his wrestling skills, Weidman is trying to push Silva up against the cage. Silva ends up backed against the cage. Weidman has worked in the underhooks and looks to take Silva down. Silva keeps his composure, and Weidman cannot get past his takedown defence. Round three ends as time expires.

I have to give that round to Silva, but only a 10-9.

Round 4

Round four begins! Silva counters a left jab with a series of rights. Slowly moving in closer, a ragged-looking Silva wants to clinch with Weidman. Weidman sees a chance for a takedown attempt, but Silva is able to defend it. The gas tank looks empty on Chris Weidman. The gas tank looks empty on Anderson Silva. Silva, who is visibly tired, looks like he might want to get in close and clinch with Weidman. Weidman tries to counter with a takedown, but Silva defended it well. Silva, who is visibly tired, looks like he might want to get in close and wrestle with Weidman. Weidman tries to single leg Silva as he moves forward, but he is too quick to step away. We go past the halfway point of this round. A visibly tired Silva is getting in closer to Weidman, perhaps looking for a clinch. Seeing an opportunity, Weidman avoids the clinch and goes straight for a takedown, but Silva is equal to it. Silva catches Weidman with a scything low kick to the legs. Looking tired, Silva comes in closer, attempting to clinch with Weidman. Weidman sees a chance for a takedown attempt, but Silva is able to defend it. There's under a minute left in this round. Slowly moving in closer, a ragged-looking Silva wants to clinch with Weidman. Weidman tries to catch him by surprise with a takedown attempt, but it is blocked. Silva throws a couple of ragged-looking jabs as a set up, then attempts a takedown. Silva finds his takedown blocked with a sprawl, and Weidman promptly wrestles him to the ground, ending up on top, in guard. The time is up, and that's the end of round four.

That was a very close round, but I think Silva just about edged it.

Round 5

We are back underway! A weak left kick is countered by Weidman with a clean jab. Silva counters an errant left jab with a vicious leg kick. Strikes to the leg like that will take their toll. Silva blasts Weidman with a leg kick. Weidman counters an attempted body kick by scoring with an enormous right hand that shakes Silva! That last shot may have done some damage, Silva is backing off and looks totally dazed! Weidman starts throwing a barrage of big punches to try and finish, but Silva covers up and weathers the storm well. A drained-looking Weidman tries to close the distance between them. Silva ends up grappling for supremacy with Weidman. Weidman gets a couple of ineffective strikes in, but ultimately loses control of the grapple after being caught off-balance. We go past the halfway point of this round. Silva hits Weidman with some short strikes to the side of the head while grappling. Silva tries to get Weidman into a Muay Thai clinch. He gets it, and now has Weidman in trouble. From the clinch, Weidman gets hit with a knee to the side of the face...and it's enough to knock him out cold!

The winner, by Knock Out; Anderson Silva!
