The Ultimate Fighter 19: Team Edgar vs. Team Penn

Will start the 19th edition of The Ultimate Fighter.

 

This season the coaches will be ...

 

Frankie Edgar, former UFC Lightweight Champion and BJ Penn, former UFC Welterweight and Lightweight champion.

 

After the program coaches faced off in the featherweight division.

 

The Featherweight Division will be the same competition.

 

In this first episode we the fights for qualification, which will define the fighters who will be in the house.

 

EPISODE 1

 

The fighters meet at UFC Gym

 

Dana White and the coaches, Edgar and Penn arrive on the scene.

 

Dana White says that this is a chance many expect and that he expects a great season, and says he will learn a lot from the coaches this season.

 

After that the fighters were the locker to warm up and prepare for fights.

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

And here we go! Both fighters advance and strike, but neither hits anything. Mitrione avoids a left kick to the body and hits a series of quick punches. Cro Cop feints rushing in, but Mitrione doesn't fall for it. Cro Cop uses a left hook to the body, but misses. Not letting up, Mitrione steps in closer to pressure Cro Cop into action. There's a stalemate as both fighters throw strikes but neither hits. They both meet with strikes, but neither does any damage. We go past the halfway point of this round. A quick exchange of strikes produces nothing worth mentioning. Mitrione sees a leg kick coming but strikes first with a clean right jab. Cro Cop dodges a jab, and fires back with a clean right jab. Slipping past a flurry of punches, Cro Cop has the angle to counter with a stinging jab. Both fighters throw strikes, no significant damage is inflicted by either. We're into the final minute of the round. Slipping past a right jab, Mitrione hits some big lefts, Cro Cop can do nothing but try and cover up! Cro Cop collapses, hurt, and Mitrione looks to finish by unleashing a barrage of strikes to his downed opponent! With Cro Cop taking a lot of big punches, the referee has to stop the match!</p><p> </p><p>

The winner, by TKO, is Matt Mitrione!</p><p> </p><p>

There's the opening bell! Shields darts in, feints a jab, darts back out. Shields counters a right jab with a jab. Shields throws a couple of jabs, then chooses to shoot in on Lombard. Lombard tries to hook a guillotine as Shields comes in. The takedown is too good, the attempted guillotine is lost. Shields drives forward and gets the takedown! Lombard couldn't quite stop it. Shields ends up holding a seated Lombard around the waist, pressing him up against the cage. Shields smothers Lombard up against the cage wall. Lombard is controlled against the cage wall, unable to shift Shields off of him. Shields tries to improve his position. Shields shows his ground skills and gets full mount! We pass the halfway mark of this round. Shields pounds away on Lombard. Lombard had better start defending himself, or this will be over! The referee pulls Shields away, stopping the match!</p><p> </p><p>

The winner, by TKO, is Jake Shields!</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

The fight begins! Silva steps in, fakes dropping down for a shot, then darts back out. There's a stalemate as both fighters throw strikes, but neither scores. Davis avoids a body kick. Moving in closer, Davis looks like he may want to wrestle Silva. Davis eats a stiff counter right hand and almost goes down! Davis avoids a nice combination. Davis narrowly misses Silva with a right uppercut. Silva steps in closer to force the issue. We've now passed the halfway mark in this round. There's a stalemate as both fighters throw strikes, but neither scores. Both fighters fire off strikes, neither produces any significant damage. In close proximity from the strikes they threw, they fall into a messy clinch. Davis is trying to push Silva so that his back is up against the cage. Silva ends up backed against the cage. Showing his ability to control opponents, Davis simply smothers Silva against the cage for over a minute. There's under a minute left in this round. Davis smothers Silva up against the cage, keeping him stuck there for the remainder of the round. The time runs out on round one.</p><p> </p><p>

That has to go down as a 10-9 round to Davis.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

Round two begins! Silva drops a shoulder, trying to sucker Davis in with a feint. Davis looks like he might be trying to get in close and wrestle with Silva. Davis grabs Silva and pulls him into a grapple. Davis is trying to muscle Silva up against the cage. He does so, and now has Silva pinned to the cage. Showing his ability to exert control, Davis smothers Silva up against the cage for a minute or so, wearing him down with occasional sharp punches to the ribs. Davis launches an elbow strike but Silva is ready and uses some wrestling to turn around so that Davis is the one against the cage. With the fighters having been stuck against the cage for quite a while, the referee bringing them back to the center. Davis looks like he might be trying to get in close and wrestle with Silva. Not wanting to grapple, Silva uses strikes to keep Davis at a distance. We pass the halfway mark of this round. Silva avoids a jab and scores with several big right hands, putting Davis down, dazed! Silva quickly pounces, looking to rain down punches on the stunned Davis! Silva fires away with punches, Davis is taking powerful shot after powerful shot! The referee has no option but to leap in and stop the fight!</p><p> </p><p>

By TKO, the winner is Thiago Silva!</p><p> </p><p>

There's the opening bell! Franklin feints left and tries to get Bisping to commit to a strike, but gets no joy. Bisping steps in, feints a kick, then darts back out. Franklin moves out of range of a tidy combination of punches. Franklin gets suckered in by a feint, and is fortunate to avoid the barrage of big right hands that follow it. Bisping is looking to get in close and strike from the pocket. Franklin tries to counter by dropping down and going for a single leg, but Bisping defended it well. Franklin steps back to avoid a one-two combination. Franklin steps back to avoid a left jab. We go past the halfway point of this round. Franklin comes in, looking for a quick takedown. Bisping tries to strike first with a solid right hook, but isn't quick enough. The takedown is successful, Bisping pulls guard. Franklin fires off a handful of punches, each easily being blocked with gloves. Franklin tries to pass the guard. Franklin struggles but cannot find a way past and remains stuck in guard. Bisping tries to get double underhooks on Franklin so that he can get some control, but can't get them. The end of the round is coming quick, there's under a minute left. Franklin fires off a few punches, but they aren't thrown with any great force. Franklin looks to get past the guard. He can't find a way past the guard. Bisping tries to get double underhooks on Franklin so that he can get some control, but can't get them. Franklin attempts to pass guard and gain a better position. Advancing his position, he passes to half guard. Round one is brought to an end as time runs out.</p><p> </p><p>

That has to go down as a 10-9 round to Franklin.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

There's the bell and round number two begins! Franklin steps back to avoid a kick to the body. There's a stalemate as both fighters throw strikes, but neither scores. A right jab misses and Bisping counters with a clever combination that finishes with a nice right cross. Bisping counters a wayward right jab with a couple of jabs and a beautiful right hook to the body. Moving in closer, Bisping looks like he wants to strike from the pocket. Franklin tries to counter by dropping down and going for a single leg, but Bisping defended it well. We move into the second half of this round. Bisping looks like he wants to stand in the pocket and strike with Franklin. Franklin sees a chance for a takedown attempt, but Bisping is able to defend it. A tight combination narrowly misses Franklin and allow him to counter-strike with a crisp jab. Bisping feints going high and then throws a barrage of big rights, with Franklin only just able to evade them. We have one minute of the round remaining. Franklin counters a wayward left jab with a solid right jab. Bisping feints stepping in. Round two ends as time expires. Good round, that's the sort of action we like to see.</p><p> </p><p>

I think Bisping took that round, 10-9 on my score card.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 3</strong></p><p>

And here we go, round three! Judging from what we heard from his corner, Franklin is looking to avoid strikes and take it to the ground in this round. Bisping moves in quickly after a wayward punch and hits a couple of shots to the body and a nice right uppercut. Franklin avoids a tight combination. Franklin looks to be trying to close the distance between them. Bisping is pulled into a grapple. Using his wrestling skills, Franklin is trying to push Bisping up against the cage. Bisping ends up backed against the cage. Franklin looks to try and maintain control via his wrestling skills, but Bisping proves too good and manages to turn them around so that he is in the dominant position. Bisping moves back from the grapple and looks ready to strike. Franklin uses head movement to avoid a right jab. We've now passed the halfway mark in this round. Bisping throws a nice sequence of punches, but Franklin covers up and absorbs them. Slipping past a left jab, Franklin hits a solid right jab. Using head movement to slip past a right jab, Bisping hits a flurry of quick punches to sting Franklin. Bisping throws a nice sequence of punches, but Franklin covers up and none of the shots finds a home. A nice one-two combination doesn't trouble Franklin, who covered up well. Michael Bisping doesn't look like he has much left in the tank. There's under a minute left in this round. Bisping tries for a right jab but Franklin uses head movement to avoid it. Franklin, standing at close range, catches a body kick and goes for a takedown, and gets it! Bisping pulls guard. Bisping is controlled against the ground, unable to shift Franklin off of him. The time is up, and that's the end of round three.</p><p> </p><p>

That wasn't the most exciting round we've ever seen, hopefully things will pick up in the next one.</p><p> </p><p>

Incredibly close round, but Bisping came out just ahead on my score card.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 4</strong></p><p>

There's the bell for the start of the round! Bisping avoids a jab and scores with a couple of nice shots. An errant jab sets Bisping up to counter-strike with an enormous right hook, Franklin is on rubbery legs and eventually falls down! Bisping quickly pounces, looking to rain down punches on the stunned Franklin! Bisping can't put Franklin away, and gets sucked into half guard. Franklin keeps Bisping, who looked to be trying to stand up, in half guard. Franklin tries to ensnare an arm. Bisping gets caught in a kimura...and has no choice but to tap out!</p><p> </p><p>

The winner, by submission, is Rich 'Ace' Franklin!</p><p> </p><p>

Another season of The Ultimate Fighter is getting. Coaches are rivals, Frankie Edgar, former UFC Lightweight champion, and B.J. Penn, also a former UFC Lightweight and Welterweight champion. The two coaches have met twice. After this season they meet for the third time to consolidate a another great trilogy.</p><p> </p><p>

Now 16 will compete for the Featherweight UFC contract. This all set for another season will start in February... and we will know who will be the next Ultimate Fighter.</p><p> </p><p>

There's lots of strikes landing, Pearson needs to find a way out of this position quickly! The referee pulls Horcher away, stopping the match!</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

There's the opening bell! Marriott steps back to avoid a left jab. Marriott throws a couple of jabs, then chooses to shoot in on Lyons. Marriott doesn't get the takedown, Lyons was equal to it and pulls them into a clinch. Using his wrestling skills, Lyons is trying to push Marriott up against the cage. Lyons manages it, and controls Marriott up against the cage. With the cage trapping Marriott, Lyons looks to try and take him down. The takedown is successful; Marriott seemed happy to take it and pull guard. Marriott tries to ensnare an arm. Lyons fends off Marriott, and doesn't give up an arm. Lyons attempts to pass guard and gain a better position. He can't get free of the guard. Marriott grabs an arm and raises his legs, trying to lock Lyons into a triangle choke. Lyons blocks the triangle attempt. We've now passed the halfway mark in this round. Lyons starts trying to work to get past the guard. After a struggle, he gets to half guard. The end of the round is coming quick, there's under a minute left. Lyons reaches over and tries to lock Marriott in a kimura. Marriott doesn't allow the kimura to be applied. Round one ends as time expires. That was a good round, full of action, hopefully we've got more of the same to come.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

There's the bell for the start of the round! Marriott slips out of the way of a leg kick. There's a short stalemate as both fighters advance and throw strikes, but neither hits. Lyons steps back to avoid a flurry of punches. Lyons counters a left jab by using a kick to the inside of the left leg. A wayward low right kick allows Marriott to hit a flurry of quick punches to sting Lyons. Moving in closer, Marriott looks like he wants to strike from the pocket. Lyons counters by dropping down and hitting a single leg, Marriott is forced to pull guard. We move into the second half of this round. Lyons smothers Marriott with his body by pushing forward and down. Lyons tries to pass the guard. Marriott keeps his guard secure. Marriott brings his legs up and tries to lock Lyons in a triangle choke. Lyons blocks the attempt. There's under a minute left in this round. In guard, Lyons begins working to pass to side control. Marriott keeps Lyons in guard. Austin Lyons is breathing very hard. Time expires and we come to the end of round two. That wasn't the most exciting round we've ever seen, hopefully things will pick up in the next one.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 1</strong></p><p>

There's the opening bell! They come together and strike, but neither can land a clean shot. A left jab misses and Struve counters with a flurry of quick punches. Gonzaga comes in with a couple of jabs, using them as cover so that he can shoot in. Gonzaga eats a stiff counter right hand and almost goes down! Struve tries for a left jab but Gonzaga moves out of range. Both fighters come in and exchange strikes, but neither does any damage. From the missed strikes they clinch. Gonzaga attempts to wrestle Struve to the ground. Gonzaga gets the takedown! Struve pulls guard. Gonzaga lies on top of Struve, basically smothering him. We move into the second half of this round. Gonzaga smothers Struve with his body by pushing forward and down. Struve is controlled against the ground, unable to shift Gonzaga off of him. Gonzaga punches down at Struve, but they are easily taken on the gloves. Gonzaga throws a few strikes, but is clearly slowing things down so that he can catch his breath. The end of the round is coming quick, there's under a minute left. Gonzaga keeps Struve guessing with a few quick strikes. Gonzaga tries to control Struve against the ground, but finds it a struggle. Struve tries to pull Gonzaga in close and smother him, but doesn't get anywhere with it. Round one is brought to an end as time runs out.</p><p> </p><p>

An extremely close round, could have gone either way, but personally I'll give it to Gonzaga 10-9.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

We are back underway! A big right hand doesn't find its intended target, allowing Struve to fire back with a right brutal head kick, Gonzaga goes down like a ton of bricks! He is knocked out!</p><p> </p><p>

Stefan Struve takes the victory by way of Knock Out!</p><p> </p><p>

There's the opening bell! Brown isn't drawn in by Guida feinting to his left. A couple of quick punches are used to set up a takedown attempt from Guida. Guida can't get the takedown, Brown defends it well and pulls them into a clinch. Brown is trying to muscle Guida up against the cage. Brown can't move Guida at all though, and finds himself being out-wrestled. From the grapple, Guida tries to pick Brown up on his shoulder for a slam. Brown doesn't allow himself to be lifted, and he gets away from Guida. Brown throws three punches in quick succession, but Guida was out of range. Not letting Brown settle at all, Guida comes in closer. Guida uses a flurry of lefts and rights to get Brown to cover up, then shoots in looking for a takedown. Guida drives forward and gets the takedown! Brown couldn't quite stop it. Brown is left seated, with his back to the cage, with Guida holding him down. Guida looks to get a more dominant position by pushing Brown from a seated position onto his back. Guida shifts his position to gain side control. We are now at the halfway point of the round. Guida looks to get a mount. He can't quite manage to get to mount on this attempt. Using an underhook to set it up, Brown looks to scramble for position. Brown ends up holding a waist-lock behind Guida, who is kneeling. Brown looks to unload with some big right hands, but Guida gets back to his feet before too many land. We're into the final minute of the round. A left jab misses and Guida strikes back with a straight left. Guida shoots in for a takedown. Brown attempts to avoid Guida as he shoots in. The takedown is completed, Brown is on his back and pulls guard. The time runs out on round one. Great round, very exciting.</p><p> </p><p>

I'd say that was definitely 10-9 in favour of Guida.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

Round two begins! Brown steps back to avoid a leg kick. A feinted high kick gets a reaction, and Brown is lucky to avoid the follow-up inside leg kick. Brown feints to the right, trying to draw Guida into throwing a strike. Brown counters a weak right kick with a left. An exchange of strikes doesn't really lead to anything. Brown comes in closer, looking to attack from the pocket. Brown is in the pocket, ready to attack Guida. Guida slips past a jab and scores with a crisp left jab. We pass the halfway mark of this round. Guida avoids a scorching uppercut and come back with a stinging inside leg kick. Guida lets a jab sail wide and counter-strikes with a nice left. Brown slips past a flurry of rights and lefts and hits a nice left. Using head movement to slip past a left jab, Guida hits a left hook to the body. From the pocket, Brown sees a body kick coming and hits a clean left jab. Brown tries for a left jab but Guida uses head movement to avoid it. We move into the final sixty seconds of this round. Guida comes in closer, looking to wrestle with Brown. Brown ends up grappling for supremacy with Guida. Guida is trying to push Brown so that his back is up against the cage. Brown ends up backed against the cage. Breathing very hard, Clay Guida is looking ragged. Guida has gotten underhooks in and is looking to take Brown to the ground. Brown will not go down, he blocks the takedown despite the best efforts of Guida. The time runs out on round two.</p><p> </p><p>

That round goes to Guida, 10-9 on my card.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 3</strong></p><p>

There's the bell for the start of the round! Brown feints left and throws a flurry of punches but Guida is just able to avoid them. Brown avoids a flurry of rights and lefts and hits a solid left jab. Guida moves in quickly after a wayward punch and hits a kick to the ribs. Brown counters a left jab by using a stinging left jab. Brown looks like he wants to stand in the pocket and strike with Guida. The two fighters move closer, ready to strike. Guida uses head movement to dodge a jab, and counters with a kick to the ribs. Brown dodges a jab, and fires back with a barrage of punches, eventually putting Guida down! We move into the second half of this round. Brown dives in quickly and secures mount on the dazed Guida! Brown pounds away from the mount with elbows, but Guida covers up and defends them well. Breathing very hard, Mike Brown is looking ragged. Guida tries to get enough space to pull half guard, but Brown doesn't allow it. Brown has good control, and starts pounding away on Guida. Guida had better start defending himself, or this will be over! The referee stops the fight, he didn't feel Guida was intelligently defending himself!</p><p> </p><p>

Mike Brown takes the victory by way of TKO!</p><p> </p><p>

There's the opening bell! Mir avoids a barrage of big right hands. Overeem tries for a leg kick but Mir moves out of range. Overeem slips past a right jab and fires back with a nice left hand. Mir avoids a jab. Mir avoids a jab. Mir throws a combination of rights and lefts, using them as cover so that he can shoot in. Overeem sees the takedown coming and tries to move. Mir can't get the takedown, Overeem was too quick to back away. We've now passed the halfway mark in this round. Overeem throws a spinning back fist but Mir avoids it. Mir feints left and tries to get Overeem to commit to a strike, but gets no joy. Mir avoids a jab. Mir uses a nice combination as a set up, then shoots in for a takedown. Overeem tries to counter with a right hand, but is too slow. The takedown is successful, Overeem couldn't quite stay on his feet. The takedown leaves Overeem seated with his back pressed against the cage. We're into the final minute of the round. Mir starts trying to get Overeem on his back so that he can gain a better position. He is too good for Overeem, and gets side control. Mir tries to get into the mount position. Overeem doesn't let Mir get the mount, and so he remains at side control. Round one ends as time expires. </p><p> </p><p>

That has to go down as a 10-9 round to Mir.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

And here we go, round two! A showdown where they both exchange strikes only results in a stalemate. Good head movement allows Mir to avoid a combination. Overeem backs away from Mir, creating some space between them. Mir steps back to avoid a kick to the body. Mir uses a nice combination as a set up, then shoots in for a takedown. Overeem tries to counter Mir with a big right cross, but it doesn't hit the target. Mir counters a left jab with a solid right. Mir looks like he might be trying to get in close and wrestle with Overeem. Mir can't get near enough to engage, Overeem uses strikes to keep him out of range. The end of the round is coming quick, there's under a minute left. Mir uses a nice combination as a set up, then shoots in for a takedown. Overeem tries to avoid the takedown. Mir can't get the takedown, Overeem was too quick to back away. Mir slips out of the way of a body kick. Time expires and we come to the end of round two.</p><p> </p><p>

Round three begins! There's a stalemate as both fighters throw strikes, but neither scores. In close proximity from the strikes they threw, they fall into a messy clinch. With control of the clinch, Mir tries to complete a takedown. He has the takedown! Overeem pulls guard. Mir looks to pass guard and get side control. Overeem finds his opponent too skilled, and Mir passes guard into side control. Mir begins trying to get himself behind Overeem. Mir takes the back, Overeem couldn't stop it. Mir successfully gets both hooks in, and seems primed to finish. Mir, with both hooks fully in, tries to get the rear naked choke applied. Mir flattens Overeem out with the rear naked choke in deep and forces the tap!</p><p> </p><p>

There's the opening bell! Aldo steps back to avoid a kick to the body, having been suckered in with a feint. Lamas counters a wayward low kick by catching it and shooting in for a takedown, but it is stuffed. Lamas looks like he might be trying to get in close and wrestle with Aldo. Aldo is pulled into a grapple. Lamas is looking to muscle Aldo back against the cage. Aldo doesn't let himself be driven back though, and gains a dominant position in the grapple instead. With control of the clinch, Aldo tries to complete a takedown. Lamas doesn't fight the takedown, he seems content to pull guard. In guard, Aldo catches his breath, content just to throw a couple of punches to the body. Lamas attempts a triangle choke on Aldo from the bottom of the guard. Aldo blocks the attempt. We are now at the halfway point of the round. Aldo throws a few right hands, but is mainly trying to catch his breath. Aldo gets pulled in tight, and takes a couple of short, sharp punches to the side of the face. Aldo keeps Lamas guessing with a few quick strikes. Lamas brings his legs up and tries to lock Aldo in a triangle choke. The triangle is locked in deep, Aldo is in a world of trouble! Aldo picks Lamas up...and slams him down with a powerbomb! The triangle is broken, Aldo has left Lamas down and stunned! The end of the round is coming quick, there's under a minute left. Aldo senses victory and starts to unload with punches! Aldo pounds away with punches and Lamas is having trouble doing anything about it! The referee pulls Aldo away, stopping the match!</p><p> </p><p>

Round one begins! Cruz tries for a left jab but Barão moves out of range. Cruz feints an attack, keeping Barão on his toes. Cruz avoids a right kick to the body and hits a brilliant flying side kick, but Barão somehow doesn't go down! Looking glassy-eyed, Barão staggers backward...he may have been stunned by that last blow! Cruz runs in and tries to finish with a barrage of big punches, but Barão recovers quickly enough to cover up and absorb them. Barão keeps his cool as Cruz throws a feint to the left. A feint sets up a body kick from Cruz, but Barão is able to move out of range in time. Cruz fakes shooting in. We are now at the halfway point of the round. A weak body kick is countered by Cruz with a powerful right hook to the body. Moving in closer, Barão looks like he wants to strike from the pocket. He gets into range. Barão shoots in, looking for a close range double leg. Barão doesn't get the takedown, Cruz saw it coming and was equal to it. A weak right kick is countered by Cruz with a solid left jab. We have one minute of the round remaining. Cruz steps back to avoid a stunning flying head kick. A leg kick misses badly, giving Cruz an opening to score with a teep. Barão keeps his cool as Cruz throws a feint to the left. The time is up, and that's the end of round one.</p><p> </p><p>

That has to go down as a 10-9 round to Cruz.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 2</strong></p><p>

And here we go, round two! Between rounds we could hear the corner of Barão telling him to watch for strikes but to look for takedown opportunities. Barão steps back to avoid a one-two combination. Barão isn't drawn in by Cruz feinting to his left. A weak body kick is countered by Cruz with a nice one-two combination. Barão isn't drawn in by Cruz feinting to his left. Cruz comes in closer, looking to attack from the pocket. Barão tries to single leg Cruz as he steps in, but he is too quick to step away. Cruz looks to move in and stand in the pocket. Seeing a takedown opportunity, Barão goes for a single leg, but Cruz is equal to it. We pass the halfway mark of this round. Barão has to cover up to absorb a nice one-two combination, having been off balance after falling for a feint. Barão avoids a spinning back fist attempt. Barão gets suckered in by a feint, and is lucky to avoid the combination that follows. Cruz uses a clever feint to set up a right high kick, but Barão is able to duck under it. We're into the final minute of the round. Barão isn't drawn in by Cruz feinting to his left. Barão comes in, looking for a quick takedown. Cruz cannot stop the takedown, and has to pull guard. Barão attempts to pass guard and gain a better position. Cruz keeps his guard secure. Round two ends as time expires.</p><p> </p><p>

Incredibly close round, but Barão came out just ahead on my score card.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 3</strong></p><p>

There's the bell for the start of the round! From what we could hear of his corner, it sounds like Cruz has been instructed to try and pick Barão off with counter striking in this round. Barão avoids a quick jab and hits a jab. Cruz looks to be trying to close the distance between them. Barão drops down to try and catch him by surprise with a single leg attempt, but it is blocked. Cruz misses with an attempted right hook to the body. Barão quickly gets in closer, looking to attack. Barão throws a combination of rights and lefts, using them as cover so that he can shoot in. Barão gets a single leg takedown! Cruz pulls guard off it. Looking to catch his breath, Barão is content to just throw a couple of punches to the body. Cruz wriggles backward, taking both him and Barão back toward the side of the cage. Barão cannot stop Cruz from walking his way up via the cage, but does retain control. We are now at the halfway point of the round. With Cruz stuck against the cage, Barão tries to complete a takedown. Cruz digs in and manages to defend the takedown. Cruz wrestles free of Barão and backs off to the center. Barão gets Cruz with a punch to the ribs, but it lacked power. Cruz seems to be waiting for Barão to make a move. We have one minute of the round remaining. Cruz circles, looking for an opening. Barão presses in closer to attack. Barão looks to move in and stand in the pocket. He gets into range. The time is up, and that's the end of round three.</p><p> </p><p>

That round goes to Barão, 10-9 on my card.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 4</strong></p><p>

We are back underway! They exchange strikes, but neither fighter inflicts any real damage. A jab misses, allowing Cruz to counter-strike with a left jab to the cheek. Barão looks to be trying to close the distance between them. He pulls Cruz into a grapple. Barão tries to take Cruz down. The takedown is completed, Cruz is on his back and pulls guard. Barão tries to smother Cruz but can't keep control long enough. From his back, Cruz manages to pull Barão toward the cage. Barão cannot stop Cruz from walking his way up via the cage, but does retain control. Barão looks for a trip takedown. Cruz will not go down, he blocks the takedown despite the best efforts of Barão. Cruz creates a little bit of space, and that's enough for him to circle away out of the grapple and back to the center. We are now at the halfway point of the round. Barão comes in closer, looking to attack from the pocket. He gets into range. Barão comes in closer, looking to clinch with Cruz. Barão can't get close enough to clinch, Cruz keeps him away with strikes. Moving in closer, Cruz looks like he may want to wrestle Barão. Barão tries to counter by dropping down and going for a single leg, but Cruz defended it well. Dominick Cruz doesn't look like he has much left in the tank. Renan Barão doesn't look like he has much left in the tank. We're into the final minute of the round. Cruz, who is visibly tired, looks like he might want to get in close and wrestle with Barão. Barão moves in too, and they start to grapple. Barão is trying to muscle Cruz up against the cage. Barão does it, Cruz is stuck with his back to the cage. Round four is brought to an end as time runs out.</p><p> </p><p>

I'd say that was definitely 10-9 in favour of Barão.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Round 5</strong></p><p>

We are back underway! Barão throws a leg kick but Cruz avoids it. Barão almost tastes a head kick after falling for a feinted inside leg kick. Cruz throws a combination of rights and lefts, using them as cover so that he can shoot in. Barão tries to avoid Cruz. Cruz can't get the takedown, Barão was too quick to back away. A visibly tired Barão is looking to turn this into a wrestling match, and is getting in closer to Cruz. Barão grabs Cruz and pulls him into a grapple. Renan Barão seems to be fighting against exhaustion. Barão is trying to muscle Cruz up against the cage. Barão can't do it though, and ends up being out-wrestled in the grapple. Cruz has gotten underhooks in and is looking to take Barão to the ground. Cruz can't get the takedown, as Barão wrestles his way into a dominant position. From the looks of things, I don't think Dominick Cruz has much energy left. Barão is trying to muscle Cruz up against the cage. Cruz doesn't let himself be driven back though, and gains a dominant position in the grapple instead. We go past the halfway point of this round. Cruz has gotten underhooks in and is looking to take Barão to the ground. The underhooks are used to set up a trip, Barão is left on his back and has to pull guard. Cruz attempts to pass guard and gain a better position. Barão is ready for the attempt though, and keeps Cruz firmly in guard. Dominick Cruz looks like he is completely out of gas. Barão tries to break free and scramble for position, but Cruz keeps him trapped. Renan Barão looks exhausted. Looking to catch his breath, Cruz is content to just throw a couple of punches to the body. Barão brings his legs up and tries to lock Cruz in a triangle choke. Cruz pulls free before the triangle can be locked in. There's under a minute left in this round. Cruz tries to pass the guard. He can't find a way past the guard. We reach the time limit and this fight is over.</p><p> </p><p>

I have to give that round to Cruz, but only a 10-9.</p><p> </p><p>
