Elite Cage Warfare - A Carpenters dream

Wink Deschanel was scheduled to fight Tyrone Malik at ECW 10, but suffers a minor elbow injury. He is out and journeyman Samuel Russo will step in to fight Malik in his place. We also announce the main event for ECW 11 in June, as a Welterweight Champion will be crowned as Callum Henson takes on Feliz Matterson Jr, the top two ranked fighters available, with Gus Fitzpatrick earning a shot at the winner.

We sign former pro boxer Dennis Borgomeo to fight in our Light Heavyweight division for $1,450 per fight. He will make his MMA debut for us, most likely at the July show.

Sylvester Collins has left Halverson’s team, most likely over his loss to Hoynes for the HW belt and is said to be looking for a new team with strong standup trainers.

Gamma comes after Rupert Dreck again and we can’t afford to lose him, so I offer the unheard of sum for us of $6000 per fight for 6 fights. He ends up resigning with us, but the final cost is $7000 per fight, yikes!

Our Sportube agreement expires in 2 months and with a TV contract in place, we will be pulling their rights to show our content for free.

Evan Pizzarro leaves the Pittsburgh Steel camp, apparently not wanting to train any longer with Gus Fitzpatrick after the latter defeated him.

Stymied in their bid for Dreck, Gamma now pursues Brody Howles, who is set to be Dreck’s next challenger, we are forced to ante up, raising to $4,500 a fight after Gamma counters. We must now sweat it out.

Finances as of May 1st, coming off a monster first month on TV and the complete card for ECW 10: Mayhem.

We go hard after Gamma WW champ Bobby Brubaker, offering $11,000 per fight, it is vain as expected, as the best welterweight in the world resigns with the big boys.

Instead of the gold ring, we get two Gamma castoffs in MW Thomas Smith 15-5 signs for $2,000 per fight, 5 fights after being let go and WW Lloyd McAllister 16-6, let go in March after his 3rd straight loss comes on board for $1,500 per fight. We also sign a prospect in HW Morgan Hopwood, a 24 yr old muscle bound freak who is 1-0 and strong as an Ox, but has serious stamina issues.

MW Champ Isaiah Moore leaves Mean Machines training camp, a curious move as good as he has been.

On the business end, we schedule our first show in Canada, with ECW 13: Invasion set for Ontario in August. No fights signed yet, but I am hoping for a Rupert Dreck vs Joshua Hope main event for the LHW title, a fight that should leave a great first impression on this unexplored territory since Hope hails from Edmonton. The loser here is Brody Howles, who will now have to wait to face the winner and will probably appear on the same card. We also vault into the #6 MMA company in the world passing KDM FC.

Stan Still hurts is back and is out of his fight with Taye Burnett at ECW 11: Lonestar Showdown. No Heavyweights are available, but Dwayne Allen offers to take a catchweight fight. I decide against it and we will go with only 2 prelim fights on the card.

Gamma comes after Justin Brannagh, I offer a raise to $3,800 to keep him. Gamma counters and it eventually costs me $4,200 per fight to keep him.

Next Gamma comes after breakout star Cal Hillson, who I am paying the obscenely low amount of $735 per fight. The offer $1,000, I go to $1,600. They counter and I go to $2,000, we will see how this plays out.

Complete card for ECW 11: Lonestar Showdown in Texas, which features a so-so main event, but a stacked undercard, including a much anticipated fight between Twinge and Jones, which has turned nasty over the last couple of weeks with Twinge initiating an ugly war of words between the camps.

Very cool. I had mentioned that I had been playing a similar game as you ... with a new start up promotion, except mine is located in Canada.

I'm not as far into the game as you... Thus far I haven't had as many raids from GAMMA.. HOWEVER... perhaps even more detrimental, OMEGA started up in my game... And they have put out offers to over half of my roster.... So now many of my fighters are in OMEGA too, which is going to make it incredibly challenging to book cards going forward. I've made it my mission that once I get to national I'm going to do everything I can to absolutely crush OMEGA... sign every one of their stars to exclusive deals.

I also am curious about your popularity gains ... I was only with Sportstube and just recently got a Public Access Select contract too .. HOwever, your shows are seeing 1.2 per cent, 2 per cent, 3 per cent, etc.. small popularity gains .. I had found it odd as it wasn't this way at all in WMMA3, but my shows were getting 10%+ popularity gains .. Some as high as 12 per cent.. And these were gains in Canada, as well as US .. and then fairly sizeable gains all around the world too. I'm not sure what caused this.. but starting from I think 30 per cent popularity I'm already up to high level regional, 77 per cent, after like 7 shows... Bizarre....

I haven't played in a couple weeks, but I was on the Dec. 9 patch... I have just patched up to Dec. 27, so maybe that will make a difference going forward with really huge popularity gains.

It will, the pop gains was severely diminished by patching as the game was far too easy in the early patches for small companies.

BTW BYU, good read so far. Keep chugging along!

Thank you and yes, pops were really toned down as the patches came, I just jumped back to 2-3% after I signed my TV deal, which is cool as I like the grind.

I love the way you present this. Fiddling around with tables is absolutely baffling to me, but you've managed to use them in a way which sets out everything really clearly and effectively.

Thank you, glad to have you following along.

We are able to outbid Gamma for Cal Hillson, but he gets a new 2K per fight bump, going to $2600.00 per fight and catapults in the rankings to the #1 spot. Strangely Fatuma Roy stays at #1 in the HW division after his loss to Franklyn, but everyone knows that Sly Twinge will get the next shot.

Rupert Dreck is ready to resume training and will defend against Canadian Joshua Hope at our first show in Canada, ECW 13, which should do big business, at least on TV and give us a footprint in Canada.

Our SportsTube contract is officially over, so hopefully our TV ratings will climb now that you can’t access any content for free

Gamma is now trying to sign Abe Locke, who has yet to debut, which makes no sense as the former Alpha-1 fighter had lost 3 straight with that company and has since gone 2-0 in local fights. I up my salary offer as he could be a solid gatekeeper type for us.

Carson Neuwirth and Wink Deschanel had signed for the ECW 13 show in August, however Neuwirth has suffered a leg injury, so I bring in Jethro Munter as a replacement and this fight will headline the prelims.

Isaiah Monroe becomes the first ECW fighter to crack the top 25 overall world ratings, coming in as the #22 ranked Middleweight in the world.

In big international news, BCF Middleweight Champion Rob Baines has also signed a standard contract with SIGMA, which could make for an interesting dynamic in the coming months.

Complete card for ECW 12:

Yeah in my test run I overlooked marketing and it defaults to regional medium, so that was killing me. Had it on basic local until I hit mid level regional, now going with advanced local and hoping the TV show helps too.

I just reread and caught this part.. I find that interesting... Is "basic local" below the threshold it tells you that you will suffer a penalty? What is the penalty?

By killing you, I assume you mean it was costing money... But I assume the larger marketing, the larger popularity boost you would get from your shows?

Also BYU, what kind of popularity increases are you seeing for your fighters after fights?

As I recalled when I was playing my similar game (but start up based in Canada), fighters were only gaining about 5 per cent popularity, win or lose.. Starting with several guys who weren't starting with any name value at all in Canada, it seemed like it would take me forever to actually build any stars in my org.

I am thinking of starting a new game, similar setup to yours, with a startup in America, as opposed to Canada.. it kind of bugged me with my Canadian startup that the game created all these new fighters for the weight classes, that were super talented, but inexperienced (which I think happens when a new division is introduced in a region) .. It kind of broken immersion for me to have all these 0-0, 1-0 guys who had better talent than most of my roster (and also no renders!)

Final question (for now) .. what popularity level did you start with?

Threshold depends on the size, at low level regional I was OK using Basic or advanced local, once I hit mid level regional the penalty was mid level regional promotion, going below that just means your pop gains are much less. Once I got the TV contract though I have been at mid or high level regional since the broadcast money is solid.

As a company I started at 15% popularity and am currently at 42.1 after 12 shows, so averaging roughly 2.25% and only lost popularity once.

In terms of fighters, it varies wildly. 2 to 15% range on average, for fighters performing well.

I will use Isaiah Monroe and Jerry Bogdonovich as examples.

Monroe started at 12%, but is now at 67.8% in America, due mainly to being 4-0 and being the highest ranked guy world wide in our company, plus always has good fights.

J-Bog started at 24% and is now at 39.8% after 4 fights with ECW. He is hurt by his loss of course, but has gained 4-6% in his wins.

It's baffling to me that you don't use all 20 fights. You earn the right for 18 build up fights with the 2 main events why wouldn't you use those fights.

Two things really, one is money, I would have likely gone under with the contracts I had to pay to keep Gamma from gutting my roster and even now with the TV contract would barely be breaking even.

I want to hold a show every month to keep momentum going and visit different state/regions and with 89 fighters that would be impossible, so it is either 8 fight cards every month or 20 fight cards every 2-3 months. Long term it pretty comes out the same.

Another big month with 40+ K in profit, through August will be interesting as we venture into Canada, where we are virtually unknown, for the first time. I have hit marketing hard and with three Canadian born fighters at the top of the card (Hope, Collins and Gilbert) I am hoping to make an immediate splash as I would like to get on TV there by end of next year.

Complete Card for ECW 13 has been released.

Eric Dartmouth, with three losses in a row at Light Heavy requests a move down to Middleweight, which I grant.

We manage to keep Abe Locke from Gamma, but it costs us a bump to $2,100 per fight.

We sign former Gamma Heavyweight Leon Banks (33-15) to a 4 fight deal at $3,000 per fight, he needs a few final pay days and we need a name in the gate keeper role, win/win.

We also sign newly debuting Light Heavy David Buentello, a 25 year old with decent hands and a mid level grappling background, who will earn $500 per fight for 7 fights and rounding out the new additions is 20 year old Middleweight prospect ‘Satanic’ Ali Pyke, a good amateur kick boxer, who is looking to make the transition to MMA. He gets $400 per fight to start.

Rankings heading into ECW 13

Another question BYU ... What strategy/gameplan/system do you use for booking your fights?

In past WMMA games I have always just used 1 weight class per card ... It's not realistic in the least, but I found it was the easiest and least frustrating way to ensure all the fighters I wanted to be available for the card in that weight class would be... I would think it would be a tremendous amount of work and frustration to book more closer to real life (ie. several weight classes in every card) in this game .... at least doing it willy nilly and without a specific plan..

So how do you go about it? Any tips or hints? Do you ever run into situations where you are finding it's hard to get guys on the same schedule of availability for for an upcoming, or how do you ensure you are getting everyone regular fights? Any insight would be great. Thanks.

Wow, I hope your TV crew did some creative filming so as to not show that there were only 36 people in the crowd :)

LOL, Green screen :)

I always try to have one title fight on each card, so with four divisions I can basically just rotate and each title is defended 3 times a year. I have only had one show without a title fight, because Dreck took extra time off.

I terms of booking I don't really look at divisions, but instead rankings.

Main Event - Either a title fight or a match between two contenders in the top 4.

Co-Main - A fight between two fighters in the top 6-8 of their division, usually could be a main event, so I have a good lead in

3rd fight - Either between two fighters outside of the top 5, but in the top 15-16, or a rebound fight between a top contender coming off a loss against someone in the top 10-15.

4th fight - Build up fight between a rising contender and a gate keeper, or a fight between two hot prospects that are on the verge of becoming contenders

5th fight - Either a young prospect making his main card debut against a gatekeeper, or two solid veteran types that are no longer contenders, but still solid names.

Prelims - Will have inexperienced prospects against stiffs, or two journeymen types getting a payday/providing filler.

Following this routine I can pretty much always have balanced cards between divisions and a have a good build up from opener to main event.

That's a pretty interesting strategy.. That could work.. But rotating through the title fights that way ... I just see it getting frustrating when some of your contenders in a division are fighting a month or two before the championship fight, or a month or two after... Just makes it harder to synch up, and eventually someone will have to sit out a long period to wait for someone, it seems.

Sylvester Collins is up for renewal and despite two sub-par outings, I offer him a 6 fight extension at $6,000 per fight.

We also have 2 shows left with National Pride TV and coming off our biggest revenue earner with them, I put in a request for an extension.

Popularity wise we now sit at 43.9% in America and 5% in Canada, the next place we travel will be Mexico to get a footprint there as well.

Finances and card for ECW 14, Brody Howles is taking a risk, but a win here will definitely secure a title shot and the busiest champion in MMA is back at it!
