The WWF ran another live event in Japan on January 9th in their continuing attempt to establish a stronger foothold in that country. Here are the results:

Matsumoto and Heidi Lee Morgan over Velvet McIntyre and Tina Ferrari (47)

British Bulldog over Iron Mike Sharpe (65)

Roddy Piper over Dino Bravo (63)

Hulk Hogan pretaped promo (81)

Vader over Bob Backlund (73)

Andre the Giant over Masahiro Chono (77)

Randy Savage and Rick Martel over Ricky Steamboat and Bruiser Brody (83)

Overall: 80

As you can see, the biggest news from that show was the return of Randy Savage. Savage's suspension is now up, but the Federation chose not to include him in the field of 30 at the Royal Rumble. From being considered the favorite to win the match to being left out of it entirely--safe to say this latest suspension has derailed Savage's career considerably.

Also of note in that main event tag match was the obvious team chemistry between Savage and Rick Martel. Everyone who saw the match is raving about how well they worked together. WWF officials surely saw the same thing, but whether or not they decide to run with it and turn them into a full time team is anyone's guess.

Veteran manager Skandor Akbar has signed on with the fledgling promotion. The cigar-smoking heel should help draw heat for whomever he's paired with, but the area WCW really needs to focus on improving is their in-ring roster.

It didn't take Nikolai Volkoff long to find work after his WWF contract expired; he's expected to make his debut in World Class soon. Could he be the next challenger for reigning champion Mike Von Erich?

STARRCADE RE-ALIGNED

Jim Crockett Promotions have recently confirmed that their flagship pay-per-view event Starrcade will be moved in 1989. Starrcade was previously scheduled for the third week in November but for 1989 it will be the final weekend of the year – December 30th. The NWA are heavily promoting the event already – with the promotion hoping that the show will be the biggest event of not just the year, but the decade – as they hope to end the ‘80’s in style.

CROCKETT CUP EXPANDED

Also recently confirmed by Jim Crockett Promotions is the expansion of the Jim Crockett Sr. Memorial Cup – which will return to its original 24-team structure. The tournament is expected to take place across two nights at the end of April – with the first rounds taking place on April 29th and the finals the following night on April 30th. While no teams have thus far been confirmed you can expect teams from all around the NWA to participate in the two-night extravaganza.

-The Ultimate Warrior's WWF tenure has come to an inglorious end. The Warrior showed up dreadfully late for The Main Event, on which he was apparently supposed to wrestle in one of the early matches. Warrior, real name Jim Hellwig, has been a constant headache since joining the WWF in July, and given the depth of the WWF roster he was deemed expendable. Despite his lack of in-ring skills Hellwig has undeniable charisma and star quality, and those attributes will likely land him a job with another company.

-Late breaking news is that NJPW's Masahiro Chono missed his flight to the United States for the Royal Rumble event, where he was scheduled to take part in the 30-man battle royal. The WWF will not be able to arrange for another outside guest so close to the show, so his spot will be filled by a member of the roster not already booked on the show. Jim Brunzell and Kamala are said to be the most likely candidates.

-Adolfo Tapia, who has been appearing part-time as an enhancement talent for the WWF since April '87, has signed an exclusive contract with the Federation. He has subsequently been sent down to WWF's developmental promotion, USPW, but rumor has it that he won't be there long. Many are suggesting that James Hill is working on a gimmick for Tapia, and he will be called up and "re-debuted" as soon as it's ready.

-Manager Percy Pringle has been signed by the WWF. Pringle, a 14-year veteran of the business, has been managing in various territories for years now. He'd been in something of a tug-of-war between World Class and the CWA, with CWA taking him away from World Class in June of '87, and World Class getting him back in October of last year. They'll both be without him now though, as he will be working for Vince full-time.

-The Islanders, Haku and Tama, have signed contract extensions with the WWF. They may not be one of the featured tag teams in the company, but they help give the division depth.

-Preliminary wrestler Jesse Barr, who had been working under the name Jimmy Jack Funk, will no longer be brought in to do jobs for the company. He had never been under exclusive contract and continued to regularly work for WWA and CSW throughout his WWF tenure.

-Hulk Hogan won our recent poll asking both fans and insiders who they thought the most entertaining wrestler in the world was. No doubt Hulk will try to use this as leverage and evidence that he should take the title off of Jake Roberts, if that isn't already the plan.

http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/ss322/FCDiary/TFCTGA/NJPW.jpg~original

Riki Choshu won our poll for the best brawler in wrestling today. The 38-year old Choshu came in at #5 in our annual Power 100 rankings last month, second in the country behind only IWGP Heavyweight Champion Tatsumi Fujinami. Perhaps this is a sign that Choshu will be the man to dethrone Fujinami when his title reign comes to an end.

There were several interesting bits surrounding the WWF's recent Royal Rumble PPV:

-Backstage before the show, Razor Ramon instigated a fight with Denny Brown. Several of their fellow wrestlers had to pull them apart from what we understand. Ramon is someone many feel could ascend to the top of the card once the old guard is out of the picture, but incidents like this won't do him any favors.

-The Undertaker turned on Ted DiBiase near the end of the Royal Rumble match, completing the face turn they've been hinting at for weeks. The turn itself was a big success if the huge crowd response is anything to go by, but significant doubts remain about whether either the character or performer are truly suited for a face role.

-Several prominent stars took issue with the booking plans for the show. Hulk Hogan, already unhappy about being left out of the WrestleMania main event for the first time, would only agree to lose to Jake Roberts if he was heavily protected in the finish. Mr. Perfect felt that Brian Pillman was clearly not at his level in terms of popularity and made requests similar to Hogan. Within the Royal Rumble match itself, both Roddy Piper and Andre the Giant argued that they were considerably more popular than Bret Hart and would be better choices for the main event of WrestleMania. Their pleas obviously fell on deaf ears, which did not make either man happy.

There were also a couple of stories that developed after the Rumble:

-Sherri Martel was sent home from The Main Event after officials felt she was not of sound mind. She was subsequently suspended for a month for what we are told are issues with hard drugs.

-Female wrestler Rockin' Robin was signed to a developmental contract. Her half-brother, reigning WWF World Champion Jake Roberts, was instrumental in her signing. We're told that Roberts arranged a similar offer for her brother Sam Houston, but Houston felt that a developmental contract was beneath him and rejected the opportunity.

Tiger Mask II and Toshiaki Kawada over Mr. Pogo and Kensuke Sasaki (90)

Hiroshi Wajima and Genichiro Tenryu over Takana and Nakano to retain the AJPW All-Asia Tag Team titles (76)

Overall: 80

Anyone who was hoping that WCW's second PPV would be an improvement over their first was disappointed. They sold out the building, but the show was measurably worse than their already lackluster debut. Here's the breakdown from January 26th's Rock This Country, which did anything but live up to its name:

(Pre-Show) Ken Timbs over Buck Zumhofe (25)

(Pre-Show) Don Diamond over Ken Wayne (25)

George Wells over Bryan St. John (26)

Backstage promo featuring Skandor Akbar, David Schultz and Buddy Landel (50)

Gary Young over Joey Rossi (30)

Skit involving Super Ninja, One Man Gang and Bill Irwin (56)

Jim Lancaster over The Snowman (12)

Backstage segment with Curis Iaukea and Paul Orndorff (67)

Luke Williams over Tom Jones (34)

Bruise Brothers over Bobo Brazil Jr. and Mark Youngblood (37)

Moondog Rex over David Sammartino (40)

Sonny Rogers over Fulton and Randy Rose (43)

Skit involving Ed Wiskowski and George Steele (66)

Brian Adias over Charlie Cook to win the WCW North American Heavyweight title (34)

Super Ninja over Junkyard Dog to win the WCW World Heavyweight title (61)

Team Bandit over Cooley and Casey (42)

Overall: 49

Paul Orndorff is far and away their biggest star--perhaps they should actually start booking him in matches? Proper match placement would help as well; the semi-main has been significantly better than the actual main event on both of their shows.

Other recent big shows:

UWA: Anniversary Show 14 (Perro Aguayo over Villano III to retain the UWA/WWF Light Heavyweight title), Overall Rating: 74

CSW: Masters of War (Kevin Von Erich over Bulldog Bob Brown to retain the NWA Central States Heavyweight title), Overall Rating: 66

WWA Mexico: Arriesgado Resolucion (Rey Misterio over Super Halcon to retain the WWA Welterweight title), Overall Rating: 63

CSW: War Drums (Kevin Von Erich over Bulldog Bob Brown to win the NWA Central States Heavyweight title), Overall Rating: 62

WWA: Hangman Jury II (Al Perez over Chris Adams to retain the WWA World Heavyweight title), Overall Rating: 57

WCWA: Top of the Class (Mike Von Erich over Nikolai Volkoff to retain the WCWA World Heavyweight title), Overall Rating: 52

CCW: Apocalypse Now! (Billy Jack Haynes over Brickhouse Brown), Overall Rating: 52

PNW: Livin' On a Prayer II (Earthquake Ferris over Scott Peterson to retain the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight title), Overall Rating: 51

USPW: Delivery (The Barbarian over Chris Champion to retain the USPW World title), Overall Rating: 49

Other news:

-World Class took several shots at Continental Championship Wrestling over the course of their recent event, Top of the Class. Ironically, Kevin Von Erich works for and holds championships in both groups.

-WWA Mexico's reigning Welterweight Champion, Rey Misterio, has a namesake. At the ripe old age of 14, Rey Misterio Jr. has joined his real-life uncle in WWA and is expected to make his in-ring debut soon.

<hr noshade size=3>

Final, for the love of all that's holy and good... change the UWF title names.

The strange thing is that they left their other two titles alone. I have no idea why they retired their heavyweight title and replaced it with that. I'd honestly forgotten about it until I was putting that update together, but I've gone in and renamed all of their belts to 'UWF Universal _', so their top singles title will now be known as the UWF Universal Heavyweight.

At this point WCW should hire Rey Jr and slingshot the belt onto him. A green Mysterio will pull better match grades then this crap! Who is the booker of WCW btw. Also I knew the Warrior was not long for this world. Maybe Anderz can hire him make him straighten up.....and maybe teach him how to wrestle.

PUTTING THE NATIONAL INTO NATIONAL WRESTLING ALLIANCE

With the success of the recent NWA WrestleWar '89 event, Jim Crockett Promotions have been upgraded to a National level promotion by all leading publications. The show, rated 88 on our scale, was the second time over the last three months that the NWA's pay per view has out performed the WWF – with the Royal Rumble rating an 86. This show has pushed JCP over the edge, resulting in them now meeting our criteria to be a National promotion here in the USA.

WARRIOR INCOMING

The recently departed WWF superstar The Ultimate Warrior has been rumoured to have signed a one year deal to ply his trade in the NWA. Jim Crockett Promotions believe that despite his backstage problems he has enough of an upside to give him a chance in the NWA. The Warrior is expected to make his debut at the next set of television tapings in early February but we have to wait and see how well he gels with the new locker room.

A ROYAL PAIN

Backstage at WrestleWar it has been reported that Sean Royal, one half of the New Breed tag team was causing trouble. Royal was said to be frustrated with sitting on the sidelines and was winding up Kevin Sullivan – another man who didn't appear at the show. Sullivan reportedly came close to blows with Royal, but kept his cool. Harley Race heard about the incident and read Royal the riot act – with sources suggesting that he was only kept on the payroll because the company need as many established tag team's as they can get ahead of the Crockett Cup tournament in April.

-They may not acknowledge them publically, but the WWF is keeping close tabs on the recent growth of Jim Crockett Promotions. The company's top brass have quietly discussed the implications of JCP's new designation as a national promotion, and they are keenly aware of the fact that the NWA's PPV events have received more critical acclaim than their own offerings two out of the last three months. That may be in danger of happening again in February, as such top stars as Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Ted DiBiase, Roddy Piper, The Undertaker and Vader are not booked in matches on the Road to Wrestlemania PPV (though we expect every one of those names to appear on the show in one fashion or another.) While they don't view JCP as being on their level at this stage, the WWF is starting to realize that the NWA may not be out of the fight just yet.

-Things may be reaching a breaking point between WWF management and Rick Rude after Rude apparently tested positive for steroids yet again. We've had reports of Rude getting popped for steroids several times in the past, and whatever efforts the WWF has made towards straightening him out obviously have not worked. Our sources tell us head booker James Hill was furious with Rude and told him this was his last chance, but Rude's only response was to sarcastically tell him he'd try not to get caught again. Some believe that if the Federation weren't worried about the newly national Jim Crockett Promotions or the upstart WCW outfit reaping the benefits of the work they've done in getting Rude over, he would've been fired then and there. He remains on the active roster for now, but his chances of becoming a top heel in the company may be evaporating.

-Adolfo Tapia has returned from his very brief stint in USPW, with a new gimmick to boot. He debuted his new character 'El Presagio' in a dark match before the Jan 31st Main Event. The character is intended to be a mysterious and foreboding masked villain. We're told that he will only formally debut the character on TV once they've found a suitable manager to enhance his act. He was accompanied to the ring by Paul E. Dangerously in that dark match, and Bobby Heenan did the honors on a recent house show, but whether either of those two will be in his corner when he debuts the character on TV remains to be seen.

Congrats to Anderz on hitting national (with a nod thrown in to Ritchardo as well for setting the table.) That should be a major boost to the game world. Now if only WCW could pull their act together...

Man, Super Ninja as champ! Luke Williams on the roster!? I never knew Russo was secretly the booker of this WCW!

Super Ninja as champ was a stupid decision, but they seem to make nothing but stupid decisions. Luke is far from the worst member of the roster.

He's probably already a better worker than the majority of their roster, but with 0 pop throughout the US he wouldn't be able to have better match ratings than guys like Orndorff or Buzz Sawyer. At least I don't think he could; maybe we'll see if and when they ever actually put Orndorff in a match.

Sandy Barr is their booker.

In my AWA game, WCW raided my roster when they started but instead of using the stars (Bret Hart, Curt Hennig, Slaughter, Arn, Zbyszko, etc), they made Dennis Condrey the World Champ.

That's a much better roster, but obviously they didn't have a chance to sign that kind of talent in this universe. They could have tried to sign Condrey, as I made him and several other members of my midcard available for them to "steal", but they didn't make an offer to any of them.

I hope Warrior has learned his lesson!

He hasn't. I'm sure Anderz can turn him into a big star if he commits to doing so, but he'll have to ignore his bad behavior. There just wasn't any benefit in doing so for me given my roster depth.

Congrats to Anderz on hitting national (with a nod thrown in to Ritchardo as well for setting the table.) That should be a major boost to the game world. Now if only WCW could pull their act together...

Super Ninja as champ was a stupid decision, but they seem to make nothing but stupid decisions. Luke is far from the worst member of the roster.

I'd actually say WCW has constructed a decent roster -- between Orndorff, Gang and JYD they've done very well putting together a working roster. The booking is what kills them, as guys who are far less over and not as good seem to consistently main event.

I'm guessing that Barr will have to get the can before Turner can turn it around.

-A number of WWF on-screen performers have signed contract extensions recently. The British Bulldog, Greg Valentine, Brutus Beefcake, Ax of Demolition, Jim Duggan, Miss Elizabeth, Slick and Cutie Suzuki all re-upped with the Federation.

-El Dandy chose to sign an exclusive written contract extension with CMLL in Mexico, and thus will no longer be brought in as an occasional job guy.

-The WWF's old TV show, Superstars, will be returning to the air next month on the TNN network. It will temporarily be taped on Wednesdays alongside Wrestling Challenge, which still has a handful of syndicated deals remaining that the WWF cannot get out of lest they risk getting sued. Once those deals run out later in the year Wrestling Challenge will be phased out and Superstars will be taped on Tuesdays prior to The Main Event, as Challenge currently is.

-The Main Event will continue to air in Mexico thanks to an extension with Canal.

Yeah, that's a fair point. They haven't done a terrible job assembling a roster considering the state of the game world, but they're definitely doing a terrible job getting the most out of said roster.

Another major roadblock they're facing? They're owned by Time Warner, and through some testing I've discovered that the only Time Warner network they're eligible to negotiate with is TBS. But TBS won't give them a deal as long as Friday Night Showdown is still on the air--and FNS still has a year left on its deal. I don't think Ted Turner's experiment is going to end very well.

Each WCW post kills me a little on the inside. I wish someone was running them properly. :(

It's sad. Hopefully Turner's money can keep them propped up long enough for them to do...something.

-WWF officials were very happy with the tag team performance of Rick Rude and Hercules during their squash match on The Main Event. There is a feeling that the two could make for a very promising full-time team should the booking team choose to go in that direction.

-Brian Pillman reportedly tested positive for soft drugs this past week. Sources tell us that booker James Hill took a friendly and supportive approach in dealing with Pillman, but let him know that if it happened again he would be suspended at the bare minimum. Pillman is said to have responded well to the encouragement and promised he would do his best to clean up his act, so his spot as one of the rising young stars in the company appears safe for now.

-Here are the full results from the Federation's most recent show in Japan, held in the Chubu region on February 6th:

I have to admit, that's a pretty good card top to bottom. Tough i wonder how even Andre got an 83 rating out of Iron Mike Sharpe(my fav jobber just behind Barry Horowitz) Not to mention the Brody vs Backlund match, just a completely different set of styles there. Wonder if the two ever met for a macth.

I'm actually thinking about upping his booking skill just to see if that would help.

Why not replace him with the RL WCW equivalent? I'm guessing Flair isn't available (who initially had the book), possibly Ole Anderson (1990, IIRC he's still with JCP) or "Cowboy" Bill Watts (1992, before Bischoff)?

They might have a higher booking skill/different philosophies, and bring realism to the product.

Flair and Ole aren't leaving the NWA for Turner's poxy project.

Watts is a little busy with the UWF right now.

Bischoff is busy announcing in the USPW. I don't think he's on a developmental deal though so he's probably the most viable of these options.

Either way; I think it makes sense for Barr to at least have a chance to succeed.
