JCP: The Race To The Top [TGAAB]

Recommended Posts

Well, looks like Naitch found his partners, eh?

HTM vs. Muraco is interesting. That match is a candidate to steal the show I think. Honky has had some great matches in JCP.

The Fabulous Ones can always be relied on; Flair must see something in them. And Honky vs The Rock is the sleeper on this show.

Honky Tonk Man was one of the more surprising (to me at least) success stories for Ritchardo and it will be interesting to see how he will do with you. If there´s going to be a title change in this show I think this is the most likely spot for it (since most other challengers are from different promotions) but I go with Honky retaining as he just won the belt.

Based on last show, Flair winning here would set-up Flair vs. Tully so that´s what likely will happen.

Zbyzsko gets the win but is beaten down after his match by Adonis and Murdoch

Honky sure has had a new lease of life since leaving the WWF. But then so has Muraco, his run in Japan was great.

I'm kind of hoping that Adonis has a similar renaissance in this run; that being said Zbyzsko is coming off of a run as AWA champion.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match

I'm gonna say a DQ or count out win, keeping the Warriors strong and giving the AJPW guys a win somewhere, albeit without winning the titles.

As much as I'm not sure about the Fabs being on the winning team here, Flair needs to win.

I'm highly tempted to job the Warriors out and make them look weak just to stick it to the WWF - read the TGAAB-verse thread if you don't get this...

We shouldn't forget that Keirn and Lane won the Crockett Cup this year; they aren't just a pair of groupies hanging around Flair's limo.

A very nice go-home show that ends with a massive brawl. Can't wait to see how things go at the Clash!

Can't have a go-home show without a pier six brawl!

Just as a heads-up; I've had a new laptop so I'm in the process of transferring everything over so my work on the Clash has slowed a little - hoping to still have it posted in a few days though; I don't want to be responsible for holding up Christmas in Canada as well.

Also, thanks for the ton of predictions and a big thanks to angel for the DOTM nomination as well.

NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match

Tully Blanchard © vs. "Mr. Fantastic" Terry Taylor [NWA World Television Champion]

I don't see Tully losing it this early, and not to the Taylor Made Man. :p

AWA World Heavyweight Championship Match

Honky Tonk Man © vs. Don "The Rock" Muraco [NWA United States Heavyweight Champion]

Honky retains by some sort of shenanigans.

NWA World Tag Team Championship Match

The Fabulous Freebirds (Michael Hayes & Terry Gordy) © vs. The Road Warriors (Hawk & Animal) [AJPW Unified World Tag Team Champions]

Seeing as that it's a one night affair, the 'Birds retain.

NWA World Cruiserweight Championship Match

Jushin "Thunder" Liger © vs. Masanobu Fuchi [AJPW Junior Heavyweight Champion]

See my prediction on Freebirds vs. Road Warriors.

NWA United States Tag Team Championship Match

The Guerrero Brothers (Hector & Chavo Guerrero) © vs. Los Hermanos Dinamita (Cien Caras & Mascara Ano 2000) [Mexican National Tag Team Champions]

Again, see my prediction on Freebirds vs. Road Warriors.

The Four Horsemen (Arn Anderson, Barry Windham & Bob Orton Jr.) vs. "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair & The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn & Stan Lane)

Heels get this one to keep the feud going. Probably Arn or Windham getting the fall over one of the Fabulous Ones.

"The Living Legend" Larry Zbyzsko vs. Adrian Adonis

Looks like Larry Legend will be settling into his role of either a gate keeper or torch passer.

The Enemy (Ron Simmons & Larry Cameron) vs. Dusty & Dustin Rhodes

The Enemy will look strong by losing by DQ, and follow it up with a post match beat down.

Ken Patera vs. Jerry Blackwell

This match could get bowling shoe ugly.

Bonus Questions:

What was the best match on the show? Horsemen vs. Flair & Fabulous Ones

What was the worst match on the show? Patera vs. Blackwell

NWA Clash of the Champions

December 24th, 1988

From the Joe Louis Arena – Detroit, MI

Attendance: 21,000 (SOLD OUT)

Announce Team: Jim Ross, Boyd Pierce & Nick Bockwinkel

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/JimRoss_zps3573cbd6.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/BoydPierce_zps1053571f.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/NickBockwinkel1_zps65fdd458.jpg

After all of the fanfare, the Clash of the Champions starts off backstage – in the locker room of the Four Horsemen. Tony Schiavone is standing by to get words from the NWA World Heavyweight Champion and the rest of the group ahead of a big night for the four men. Ole Anderson leads the interview and primarily addresses Ric Flair – he tells Flair that the Horsemen have evolved and he has been left in the dust; the only reason he stayed the NWA Champion for as long as he did was because of the Horsemen and because of men like Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, Bob Orton Jr. and Barry Windham. Tonight, this group will prove that they are all better than Ric Flair, both collectively and individually and it doesn’t matter who Flair has on his side there is nothing he can do to stop the Four Horsemen. The NWA Champion himself talks briefly about Terry Taylor; and tells him that there was a reason he was left on the side of the road as the Horsemen made their play for the top prize. The only thing he has going for him is the TV Championship and the only reason he still has that belt is because the Horsemen chose to hand it to him as a parting gift – if he keeps meddling in Horsemen business, they will make sure he never wins a Championship ever again. Arn Anderson wraps things up – and tells Flair, Taylor, Lex Luger and the Fabulous Ones that they can attack the Horsemen together or on their own but they will never win because these four men are the Horsemen for a reason, and they will do everything that they can before they accept defeat against lesser mortals.

Inside the arena, the NWA Commissioner Harley Race is stood at the top of the entrance ramp. Race welcomes the fans in attendance to the first ever Clash of the Champions – and talks up the fantastic concept that is Champion vs. Champion. Tonight, we will see five great Champions defend their titles against five great Champions and no other wrestling promotion in the world can offer such high calibre match-ups this weekend or any other. Race wishes everyone a Merry Christmas – apart from Mr. T. Race tells Mr. T that he is walking on thin ice, and that he shouldn’t poke a sleeping bear – if he keeps this up Race will be forced to swap his suit for his wrestling tights and teach him a thing or two in that very ring.

NWA World Cruiserweight Championship Match

  • The two Japanese stars opened the show and put on a technical wrestling clinic. The US fans might not be completely used to this style of match; but they seemed to enjoy the mix of technical holds and stiff strikes thrown together with the occasional high flying interlude.
  • Liger used his experience inside the NWA ring to his advantage and took control of the battle down the stretch. Fuchi refused to stay down however, and fought back with a nasty enzuigiri that nearly took the mask off the face of Liger.
  • Fuchi attempted to finish things off with his patented back drop; but Liger flipped free and dropped Fuchi on his head with a DDT. Liger signalled for the end and headed up to the top rope – and connected with the Shooting Star Press to seal the victory.

Backstage, we head to the locker room of the NWA World Tag Team Champions – the Fabulous Freebirds. Hayes and Gordy are talking trash to each other about their upcoming battle with the Road Warriors – when an unknown man wearing a flashy outfit and outrageous sunglasses interrupts them. The man quickly identifies himself as Diamond Dallas Page and offers his managerial services to the Freebirds. He makes wild claims about being able to guarantee that they will walk out of tonight as the Champions; and Hayes steps up and tells Page that if he can ensure that tonight – he will get the job full time. The three men shake hands and it looks like the Freebirds have expanded.

  • The second title match of the evening saw Mexico’s best tag team fight against one of Mexico’s most famous families over the US Tag titles.
  • The two brother teams fought well together and it was clear to see that they had chemistry for miles. Once again, however, experience inside the NWA ring was key in this battle as it was in our opener – as despite, Caras and Mascara’s best efforts the Guerrero’s always seemed to be one step ahead.
  • Caras did have one opening; and he looked certain to take it as he locked Chavo into the Full Nelson and was on the verge of a submission victory until Hector leapt over Mascara and connected with an inch perfect missile dropkick to Caras.
  • Chavo mustered up enough strength to clothesline both himself and Mascara over the top rope whilst Hector came off the top turnbuckle with a frog splash to retain the titles.

We are then greeted by the debuting Sgt. Slaughter who has a microphone in his hand as he walks to the ring. Slaughter tells the fans that he was not impressed by the display of the United States Tag Team champions – he also is confident that he won’t be impressed by the performance of the US Heavyweight Champion later tonight. Slaughter tells the fans that they shouldn’t be impressed by these maggots either and that he will show them what a real American hero can do inside this ring.

Sgt. Slaughter vs. Brian Blair

  • The unlucky man to face off against the Sarge in his debut was Brian Blair and despite his best efforts this contest ended up being a rather one-sided affair. After throwing Blair ahead for several minutes, Slaughter ended his night with the Cobra Clutch which garnered a submission.

Winner: Sgt. Slaughter at 4:25

Backstage, Tony Schiavone has caught up with The Enemy and Mr. T. Teddy Long tells Tony to shut his mouth and let Mr. T speak – with T proceeding to tell Harley Race that tonight his tag team will destroy the NWA Commissioner’s hand-picked team of Dusty and Dustin Rhodes. T tells Race that there is nothing he can do about it; and once it’s been done it’ll be on Race – and if he wants to change out of his suit and give Mr. T a fight he’d be happy to teach the old sucka a lesson.

(Grade: C+)

Elsewhere, the World Television Champion – Terry Taylor is warming up when he bumps into Lex Luger and James J. Dillon. Taylor and Luger exchange an awkward handshake before Dillon offers to be in Taylor’s corner tonight for his shot at the NWA title. Dillon tells Taylor that what’s in the past is in the past and that the enemy of my enemy is my friend – and if there’s one thing that all three men can agree on it’s there hatred of the Four Horsemen. Taylor thanks both men for their offers and tells J.J. that he looks forward to seeing him at ringside later in the night.

(Grade: C-)

We go back to Tony Schiavone, who has caught up with Dusty Rhodes and his son Dustin who looks a little worse for wear. Dusty explains that Dustin has only just been realised for the hospital and it was touch and go as to whether he would be medically cleared – but Dustin is a Rhodes and there was never any doubt that he would lick his wounds and come out swinging tonight. Dusty promises revenge tonight on both Mr. T and his tag team of Simmons and Cameron; but Dustin doesn’t say a word.

(Grade: B)

Dusty & Dustin Rhodes vs. The Enemy (w/ Teddy Long & Mr. T)

  • It was clear from the opening bell that the younger Rhodes was in no condition to compete and despite Dusty’s best efforts to keep his son out of harm’s way – The Enemy eventually got Dustin in the ring and isolated him.
  • Dustin certainly showed that he had the heart of a warrior however, and managed to fight back for long enough to tag in Dusty who cleaned house and looked odds on favourite to get the victory for his team as he dropped everything in sight with an elbow.
  • This didn’t last however, as Mr. T inevitably got involved and caused chaos – Dusty chased him from the ring but this left Dustin alone with Simmons and Cameron. Despite not officially being the legal man the referee still counted Dustin’s shoulders down for the three after a nasty Dominator from Simmons left him out.

Winners: The Enemy at 10:28

(Grade: C)

We return backstage to see Ric Flair giving The Fabulous Ones a pep talk in the locker room. Flair tells both Keirn and Lane that he knows just how good they are as a team; he knows that he didn’t win the Crockett Cup just by luck – he wants them to go out to the ring tonight and prove all the naysayers and doubters wrong. Flair tells them that the Fabulous Ones are more than capable of beating up any combination of the so-called Four Horsemen and with Flair alongside them they can’t lose.

(Grade: C+)

Ken Patera (w/ Gary Hart & Sid Vicious) vs. Jerry Blackwell

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/SidVicious89_zps64c4c714.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/GaryHart2_zpscd23e8cb.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/KenPatera85_zpse5a1d7df.jpg vs. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/JerryBlackwell_zpsd17d3c48.jpg

  • This battle of the big men was bowling shoe ugly – and it was over not long after it begun. Patera attempted to use his strength but he was often thwarted by Blackwell’s size and it looked as if Blackwell was going to overcome the odds and prevail.
  • That was until Sid Vicious, perhaps the biggest man of all, leapt onto the apron to draw Blackwell’s attention away. Naturally, Jerry charged at Sid – who dodged him – but as Blackwell rebounded off of the ropes, Patera locked in the Full Nelson and once the hold was on it was all over.

Winner: Ken Patera at 5:37

(Grade: C+)

After the referee signalled for the bell, Sid joined Patera in the ring – and under the guidance of Gary Hart the two men gave Blackwell a beating in the centre of the ring. This lasted until, another behemoth joined the fray – with Bam Bam Bigelow storming down to the ring. Bigelow took Patera over the top rope with a clothesline before squaring up to Sid. The two men stood, unflinching, until Gary Hart called off his monster – choosing to fight Bigelow on his own terms.

(Grade: C)

We head backstage once again to Tony Schiavone, who has caught up with the United States Champion – Don Muraco. The Rock tells Tony that he is proud to be back in the US, and even prouder to be representing the US as its Heavyweight Champion. Tonight however, isn’t about the US title – it’s about the AWA World Heavyweight Championship – and The Rock can’t wait to fight the Honky Tonk Man and prove that he is the best and become a double champion.

(Grade: C+)

The Four Horsemen (Arn Anderson, Bob Orton Jr. & Barry Windham w/ Ole Anderson) vs. “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair and The Fabulous Ones (Steve Keirn & Stan Lane w/ Blackjack Mulligan)

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/OleAnderson_zps702a5c1e.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/ArnAnderson89_zpsa5f467c4.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/BobOrtonJr87_zps0f501d2d.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/BarryWindham87_zps8afd67bd.jpg vs. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/RicFlair89_zpsd6e041c0.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/SteveKeirnFabOne_zps9ab519cd.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/StanLaneFabOne_zps272cdee9.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/BlackjackMulligan_zps6a02f396.jpg

  • Despite this match being three on three, it often felt like the Horsemen had the numbers edge as the trio worked flawlessly together whilst Flair and the Fabulous Ones seemed slow to gel.
  • The Horsemen took this one step further as for long periods they isolated Keirn and triple teamed him as often as they could. Ole paid dividends on the outside as his timely distractions to the referee allowed the Horsemen to remain in control.
  • This took a turn for the worse for the Horsemen trio after Windham got into a shouting match with his father at ringside – with Mulligan clearly playing into the favour of his team as this allowed Keirn to tag in Lane who cleaned house.
  • Eventually, Flair and Windham were the legal men – with Arn and Orton double teaming Lane on the outside. Keirn had regrouped by this point and launched himself from the top turnbuckle to take out all three men at ringside.
  • This left Flair alone and in control of Windham; he fought to lock in the Figure Four Leglock – and once he had done, there was little that Barry could do other than submit.

Winners: Ric Flair and The Fabulous Ones at 17:39

(Grade: B)

The bell sounded, but Flair had little time to celebrate the victory as Tully Blanchard had swarmed the ring before the Nature Boy could even get to his feet. Tully connected with a nasty chair shot to the head that busted Flair open instantly. Tully took a few more shots before taking off the NWA title from around his waist and raising it high above his head. With Ole giving the orders from ringside, Tully did the unthinkable and delivered a stiff Piledriver to Flair on the steel chair – rendering him motionless.

(Grade: B)

Tully’s celebrations were short lived – as the NWA Commissioner Harley Race arrived on the scene. Race told Tully that he was disgusted by his actions but knew how he could make him pay. Race introduced Terry Taylor and told Tully that there had been a change to the schedule – his NWA title match had been moved and was up next. Race ordered everyone from ringside – announcing that only managers Ole Anderson and J.J. Dillon were allowed near the ring; everyone else was barred.

(Grade: C+)

As Taylor and Dillon made their way to the ring and Tully and Ole kicked up a fuss inside it – a bloody and semi-conscious Ric Flair was helped to the back by officials and medical staff.

  • With the match being brought forward, the Champion was visibly put off of his game plan – fighting Taylor straight after his beating of Flair was clearly not in Tully’s plans. Ole tried to turn the tide into his charge’s favour – but the presence of Dillon, another unexpected change to the script, kept things on an even keel.
  • All of this meant that Tully had to change his tactics, and fight fairly – this gave Taylor the edge early on but eventually Blanchard showed that he was Champion for a reason and took control of the bout.
  • Tully looked for his patented Piledriver often throughout the bout but Taylor seemed to have an answer for every predicament he found himself in. J.J. proved to be a great influence at ringside – and his coaching led to Taylor hitting the Five-Arm and getting a near fall on the Champion.
  • Experience would eventually pay however; as Blanchard got Taylor frustrated enough to make a mistake and allow the Champion to hit his Piledriver and retain his title.

Winner and Still NWA World Heavyweight Champion: Tully Blanchard at 20:31

(Grade: B)

After the bell, Blanchard is joined in the ring by Tara - Tully tells Flair that he is a changed man. He is not the same man who used to follow Flair around and do his bidding; he is not even the same man who beat the Nature Boy for the NWA title at Starrcade – this new and improved Tully Blanchard is more ruthless than ever and he proved that tonight. If Flair really wants his rematch, he can have it – at WrestleWar; Blanchard will gladly beat him all over again.

(Grade: B)

The Living Legend makes his way towards the ring as we prepare for our final non-title match of the night – but before Zybszko can enter he is blindsided by Dick Murdoch. Dirty Dick clobbers away on Larry; but the Living Legend fights back and gains the advantage. Zybszko sends Murdoch crashing into the barricade at ringside as Adrian Adonis makes his entrance and we get ready for our actual match.

  • With Adonis hoping that Larry was on the back foot; he came out swinging – taking the fight to Zybszko. But the Living Legend was in a rich vein of form after losing his AWA title; and took everything the newcomer had and threw it back with interest.
  • The pair could not be separated for long stints of this match; as control swung back and forth several times. Adonis would control with his power moves; but before long Zybszko would use his speed advantage to battle back and the result was very much a stale mate.
  • But somebody had to leave the battle victorious; and the end came when Adonis hit a diving shoulder block and looked for his signature DDT. The Living Legend blocked the DDT with his leg, and spun through – wrapping Adonis up tightly in a small package; and after all the fighting this simple hold proved enough to give Larry the three count.

Winner: Larry Zybszko at 16:01

(Grade: B)

After the bell, Murdoch once again tries to get involved – he charges at Zybszko; who just spots him at the last second and ducks out of the way of a clothesline. Larry drops Murdoch with a front dropkick before quickly exiting the ring and avoiding the two-on-one odds against the North-South Connection.

(Grade: C+)

Backstage, Tony Schiavone has caught up with the Honky Tonk Man – and after proclaiming himself to be the Greatest AWA Champion of All-Time and a pretty damn good singer too; Honky tells Tony that tonight he will prove it once again inside the ring. Honky plans to beat Muraco tonight in the main event and cement himself as the premier champion in all of the NWA.

  • The Champions entered first but the real story of the opening moments was the arrival of the Road Warriors – making their first appearance on US soil in over 18 months. The fanfare surrounding Hawk and Animal upon their arrival left the Freebirds on the back foot – and not even the presence of their new manager could get them a foot in the door.
  • Hayes and Gordy eventually got into the match however, and isolated Hawk from his partner as the jet-lag looked to be effecting the AJPW Unified World Tag Team Champions.
  • The Freebirds worked over Hawk in their corner and every time that he looked to work his way free, Page would intercept the referee and turn the tide back into his team’s favour.
  • The Champions looked set to retain until Hawk slipped free out of a Powerbomb attempt by Gordy. Hawk made the hot tag to Animal who stormed into the ring and cleaned out both of his opponents – dropping each men with a stiff clothesline.
  • Animal continued his flurry; dropping Gordy with a shoulder block and lifting Hayes up high with a military press slam. But before the Road Warriors could fully capitalise, Page pulled Hayes from the ring and convinced both he and Gordy that walking out was the best way to retain their titles.
  • The referee counted the Freebirds out as both Hawk and Animal looked on in disgrace and the fans voiced their displeasure at being robbed of the conclusion to the match they were looking forward to.

Page thinks better of it and backs up; unfortunately he doesn’t realise that the Road Warriors are waiting for him. Hawk and Animal throw Page back into the ring as Dusty disappears backstage brawling with both Tag Champions. After nailing Page with a few stiff shots; Animal picks him up onto his shoulders whilst Hawk mounts the top rope – he soars through and almost knocks Page’s head clean off with the Doomsday Device. The Road Warriors may be standing tall on their return to the US; but they are not the NWA World Tag Team Champions.

AWA World Heavyweight Championship Match

Honky Tonk Man © vs. Don “The Rock” Muraco

http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/HonkyTonkMan88_zpsc9168242.jpg vs. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i304/Anderz_Baz/JCP/DonMuraco87_zps0f6901d2.jpg

  • It was main event time; and Honky arrived doing his best to look like a main event star – wearing a fancy new jacket and wielding his trusty guitar; both adorned with his new “Greatest AWA Champion of All-Time” moniker. The Rock however was dressed in his usual ceremonial lei displaying his proud Hawaiian heritage.
  • The battle had a typical big fight feel and both men were uneasy to engage early doors. Honky soon sneaked his way into an advantage, as he poked Muraco in the eye off of a supposedly clean break.
  • The Champion’s advantage didn’t last and the fired up Muraco battled back and gave Honky a few scares – gaining near falls from both a gorilla press slam and a nasty looking DDT; but the Champion somehow kept his title intact by the skin of his teeth.
  • The match took a turn for the controversial when the “Real American Hero” Sgt. Slaughter appeared at the entrance way. Slaughter kept his distance for several minutes, scouting both men until he took his opportunity. The Sarge grabbed Honky’s guitar and slid it into the ring as he grabbed the referee’s attention.
  • Both The Rock and the referee argued with Slaughter through the ropes – but Honky was clearly well prepared for the distraction as he picked up his guitar and waffled Muraco over the head with it. Honky removed the evidence, and Slaughter simply let the referee turn back to the match and make the academic three count.

Nice first PPV. It seems that you're sticking somewhat close to the big show formatting established in this game world by Ritchardo and moi while still putting your own spin on it, which is cool.

I liked the postmatch angle between Tully and Flair. I can just picture Jim Ross going crazy when Naitch took that Piledriver onto the chair!

HTM continues to impress in the NWA. Getting canned by me turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him. He would have gotten lost in the shuffle had he stayed in the WWF, especially after I signed and built up new heels like DiBiase, Undertaker, Perfect, Rude and Vader.

I guess the WWF can now breathe easy about the Road Warriors being made to look weak. :D I have to ask: was that countout finish the initial plan, or did the Roadies balk at putting the Birds over? You can tell me privately if you don't want it to be public knowledge.

Looks like you have picked up the pieces and ran with it. Great ppv. And it looks like NWA is in safe hands.

However, got a gripe. Your the Nwa flagship promotion. Awa title is the main event. I understand why it is. But this needs to change I think. Just my opinion. Not trying to bash. But overall, happy.

Good show, I was surprised to see Tully and Taylor get shifted away from the main event but at the same time, HTM and Muraco had a better match anyways. I won't be surprised to see the Fabs chasing after the Freebirds in the coming future.

I had more faith in Honky and Muraco than I did in Taylor if I'm honest; and I wanted the Tully/Flair angle after the six-man. It all sort of made sense; and also allowed Race to flex his authority muscles against the Horsemen.

I've tried to do something a little similar to my TNA format and I've ended in some sort of hybrid that I'm happy with. It was a pain to format compared to TV though.

As mentioned above, the Flair/Tully angle was a key part of the PPV for me - but I didn't want it to be the end of the show.

HTM leaving the WWF was a godsend for his career - there's much more room at the top of the NWA these days.

The plan was always to put the Road Warriors over but keep the straps on the Freebirds. However, after the Observer broke that story I was tempted to job them out in a few minutes but that would have been unneccesarily douchy of me. Allowing them to get some heat back on DDP allowed them to keep looking strong for their next US appearance.

Thanks for the kind words; I was happy with my solid if unspectacular PPV debut - I expect the WWF will blow it out of the water; but it's baby steps.

As for the "Which title match ends the show?" questions; I definitely see your point but I had a look back at history since the AWA purchase and I'm happy that I'm continuing the two main titles being equal. Yes, in the end - the NWA title is the main goal; but the AWA title is definitely being booked as 1A. I feel like I had a good enough storyline reason for moving the NWA title to the middle of the show.

Anyway, since the AWA purchase the title match that ended the show each month was:

Aug: NWA (Flair d. Honky)

Sep: AWA (Zbyszko d. Tully)

Oct: Lethal Lottery Final (Flair d. Tully)

Nov: NWA (Tully d. Flair)

Dec: AWA (Honky d. Muraco)

I think it's fair to keep them on a level playing field; obviously depending on who is involved in each title hunt will determine which title is at the top so it won't keep on a simple rotation like it has done. Personally, until the inevitable unification (I'll be honest, it has to happen eventually - I've not got any plans in the near term but it'll have to happen) I will keep them level in terms of how they are booked.

I've gone on a bit of a ramble but hope this eases your concerns; if not - that's fine as well - glad you care enough to have them if I'm honest.

Thanks again.

Its all good. Like I said I wasnt trying to bash. Just was throwing out a feeling. I read yours and catch finalcounts wwf. Just dont post alot. Felt I needed to here however. Im still reading no matter what.

I wasn't taking offence or anything; but it's a good discussion point - and it's something I took under great consideration when I was laying out the show.

The obvious solution is, of course, to rechristen the AWA belt as the NWA International World Heavyweight Championship :p

maybe I could get a Wrestling Superstars Live reference in as well? ;)

Precisely why I switched up the TV format--going all out with the formatting for every TV show was wearing on me, and Ritchardo too I think. Once a month is a lot easier for me to handle than five times a month. Hopefully it won't be too bad for you as well, but you can of course switch things up however you like.

I loved that TNA diary BTW. I think that's where you really came into your own.

If you stretch it out, next year's Clash of the Champions would be a logical time for a unification, unless you feel you need to unify them earlier than that.

Great first PPV your scores wont match TFCs for a while but as far as quality you are giving him a run for his money. I really like the HTM run so far and it makes me buy him as a legit contender. The horseman angle has really started to come into its own. It kind of feels like an 80's NWO but really does work. You might even get an eventual horseman clash 4 v 4. I have a feeling that Flair and Tulley can carry you to the next level eventually they just need the right spark to ignite it.

I'm definitely still here don't fret! :D

Showdown is written up; I just need to finish booking it in game. Blame my wife; she decided to have a birthday at an inappropriate time!

All being well; the final TV of the year will be up tomorrow night.

In-ring Interview:

The North-South Connection of Dick Murdoch and Adrian Adonis start the show in the ring; and after being unsuccessful in singles action Adonis went to the NWA Commissioner in order to get a tag team title shot. Murdoch reveals that Harley Race gave them a Number One Contenders match tonight; with the winner facing the Guerrero Brothers for the US Tag Team Titles next week.

(Grade: C+)

The North-South Connection (Adrian Adonis & Dick Murdoch) vs. The British Bruisers (Dynamite Kid & Chris Adams w/ Lou Albano)

The Connection’s opponents were no pushovers; and the Kid and Adams came out fighting and looked like putting the Connection away early. The battle went on but eventually the underhand tactics of Murdoch and Adonis proved enough to give them victory and make them number one contenders. Behind the referee’s back Murdoch hit Adams with a low blow; allowing an Adonis DDT to seal the win.

Winners: The North-South Connection at 12:05

(Grade: B-)

In the interview area:

We head backstage to the locker room of the Four Horsemen; where Tony Schiavone was standing by. Tully Blanchard quickly declared that the Clash of the Champions was a complete success; Tully had retained the NWA Championship and Ric Flair was no longer a problem. Ole Anderson took over; he said that Flair may have won the battle but the Horsemen always win the war – but he is no longer an issue; tonight Harley Race has advised that Tully will defend the NWA title tonight against Stan Lane of the Fabulous Ones. The Horsemen all laugh and Blanchard tells Tony that he might as well take the night off.

(Grade: C+)

In the ring:

Eddie Gilbert makes his way to the ring, flanked by a young man who he identifies as his brother Doug. Eddie addresses Austin Idol and Missy Hyatt – he hasn’t forgotten what they did to him and promises to pay them back; but tonight his younger brother makes his debut in the ring. They will team up to face the Buddy Rose and Doug Somers; and that match is next.

(Grade: C)

The Gilbert Brothers (Eddie & Doug Gilbert) vs. Buddy Rose and Doug Somers

Doug Gilbert made an impressive debut; clearly heavily influenced by his brother Eddie – but they faced a formidable match in the veteran pairing of Rose and Somers. The two teams were fairly evenly matched until Austin Idol arrived at ringside; as Eddie argued with Idol on the outside, Doug lost concentration and got hit with a DDT by Rose – losing the match for his team.

Winners: Buddy Rose and Doug Somers at 5:41

(Grade: D+)

After the match:

As soon as the bell sounded, Idol and Eddie began swinging – the former partners brawled into the ring and were out of control. Doug tried to get between them but caught an accidental elbow from his brother. Eddie stopped and went to check on his brother – but this allowed Austin to grab a chair. Idol waffled Gilbert in the back of the head, which sent him down to the canvas alongside his brother. Idol stood tall over both brothers and mocked them; claiming that no Gilbert is good enough to beat him.

(Grade: C-)

In the interview area:

Backstage, Tony Schiavone was standing by with a worked up and furious Fabulous Ones. Their manager, Blackjack Mulligan advised Tony that Ric Flair was on the mend, but he wouldn’t be back until the New Year. Tonight, Stan Lane has been gifted a great opportunity by Harley Race to fight Tully Blanchard for the NWA Title – Lane promises to get revenge on the Horsemen for what they did to the Nature Boy.

(Grade: C+)

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Bobby Jaggers (w/ Black Bart)

After returning at Clash of the Champions to save Jerry Blackwell from a beating – Bam Bam was in fine form as he quickly dissected Jaggers from the outset. Bigelow showcased all of his skills including a huge diving splash from the top rope that finished the match of.

Winner: Bam Bam Bigelow at 3:23

(Grade: D+)

After the match:

Tara joined Bam Bam in the ring as the big man addressed Gary Hart – telling the Playboy to bring his strongman to Showdown next week and he will take on any test of strength, any challenge that he can throw at him and Bam Bam will break them all. If Hart brings along that big dufus Sid – he will break him as well.

(Grade: C+)

In the interview area:

Backstage, The Living Legend was interviewed by Tony Schiavone – and Zbyszko was fired up; telling Tony that he has proven to himself and the fans that he hasn’t lost anything inside the ring. He proved it at the Clash of the Champions and he wants to prove it again at WrestleWar – he challenges the Honky Tonk Man to give him his rematch at the AWA Title and he’s willing to wait until the New Year for an answer.

(Grade: C+)

NWA World Television Championship Match

“Mr. Fantastic” Terry Taylor © (w/ James J. Dillon) vs. Jimmy Garvin (w/ Dirty White Girl)

In the same week as coming up just short of winning the NWA Title – Mr. Fantastic was forced to defend his TV Championship against the ever-threatening Jimmy Garvin. Taylor was on the back foot early doors, as Garvin took advantage of Taylor’s fatigue off of the back of the Clash. Taylor did come good however, as we neared the 20-minute time limit and knocked Garvin down and out with the Five-Arm to retain his title.

Winner and Still NWA World Television Champion: Terry Taylor at 16:10

(Grade: C)

After the match:

As Taylor celebrates the victory, Bob Orton Jr. snuck through the crowd and slid into the ring behind the Champion. But before Orton could strike; Lex Luger stormed down to the ring – Lex and Taylor turned to face Orton; who realised that the odds were against him and quickly bailed. Orton began shouting at both men; trying to convince them that neither man could be trusted – but Luger and Taylor stood side by side and back the lone Horsemen out of the arena.

(Grade: C-)

NWA World Heavyweight Championship Match

Tully Blanchard © (w/ Ole Anderson) vs. Stan Lane (w/ Blackjack Mulligan)

Similar to the previous match; Blanchard was visibly fatigued after his battle at the Clash of the Champions and Stan Lane took full advantage. Lane channelled his anger and was on track to fulfil his words earlier in the night and get full revenge for Ric Flair. Lane pushed Blanchard all the way, and we were on the verge of ending the year with a new Champion until Tully got a second wind and a Slingshot Suplex was all she wrote for one-half of the Fabulous Ones.

Winner and Still NWA World Heavyweight Champion: Tully Blanchard at 15:39

(Grade: B)

After the match:

With Tully victorious; the rest of the Horsemen methodically walked down to the ring – surrounding Stan Lane. The Four Horsemen swarmed on Lane and began beating him down in the ring – luckily for Lane, even without Flair in the building, he had back-up. Steve Keirn, Terry Taylor and Lex Luger all ran down the ring to even up the numbers against the Horsemen. The eight men brawled in the ring until the Horsemen realised that this wouldn’t be an easy fight and they took their leave just as things were heating up. Showdown went off the air with Taylor, Luger and the Fabulous Ones standing tall as 1988 came to an end with a bang.

(Grade: C+)

Too bad Rose & Somers didn't get a better rating. B- isn't the best of grades but it's one for the roster: you build on people, try to get new workers over.

You can lay the blame at Doug Gilbert mainly for the tag match getting a low grade.

As for the show; it was without Flair, Dusty, Slaughter, Honky, Muraco and the Freebirds so with hindsight it isn't a surprise the grade is a little low.

Trying to get a few different faces on screen and move a few of the lesser storylines on a bit. A few of the bigger hitters will be back next week and the Horsemen won't have to carry the show so much.

Thanks for reading.

Also, as TFC noted in his thread: keep an eye out on the TGAAB-Verse Central for all the latest news and the end of year awards.
