GAMMA 67: Fujimoto vs Foster

Prelims

Benny Danare (12-5) v Goncalves Cassaro (11-1) - Lightweight

Danare gets the takedown with the first attack of the round, however given that Cassaro is quite happy fighting off his back he probably didn't fight it too hard. Cassaro goes for an arm, which starts a scramble and they both end up back on their feet. Danare gets a trip takedown, but Cassaro flips him over and ends up on top and behind him. He lands a couple of shots before Danare manages to turn over and Cassaro stands up. They finish the round standing, with both landing a few jabs. Excellent round, if only all ground fights were like that.

Round 2 is a completely different animal as Cassaro works the jab, he keeps Danare on the back foot throughout and lands several hard shots. Good round for Cassaro.

Round 3 again sees Cassaro defending the takedown with his jab, he lands a big right hook about halfway through the round and follows up with another that puts Danare down, he follows Danare to the ground and lands a few shots, but Danare is too slippery and manages to get back to his feet. Danare grabs Cassaro and pins him against the cage but the buzzer goes before he can take advantage.

Result: Goncalves Cassaro defeats Benny Danare (Unanimous Decision). The match was rated as Great

Dean Capers (7-1) v Ken Peters (12-4) - Light Heavyweight

If the last fight was an example of how the ground game can be exciting this is the exact opposite. There's a lot of clinching, a couple of takedowns and a lot of smothering against the ground. The scores are close, only because neither fighter really did anything but Peters takes the split decision.

Result: Ken Peters defeats Dean Capers (Split Decision). The match was rated as Very Poor

Joseph Tsay (7-1) v H M Menzel (16-7) - Lightweight

Menzel is a massive favourite here (-1200) and he shows why, taking Tsay down and tapping him out. It's all over in the first.

Result: H M Menzel defeats Joseph Tsay (Submission (Armbar) in 1:36 of round 1). The match was rated as Good

Ryder Myllart (7-2) v Alan Kendall (16-6) - Welterweight

Kendall is also a big favourite here (again he's -1200 in the betting) and he shows why taking Myllart down after a brief exchange, he transitions to side control and applies the Americana, it's all over.

Result: Alan Kendall defeats Ryder Myllart (Submission (Americana) in 4:36 of round 1). The match was rated as Good

Pai Cheng (9-1) v Wilson Franklyn (13-3) - Heavyweight

On paper these two fighters are pretty even (-140 to -130) but fights aren't fought on paper. This is as one sided as the previous two fights with Cheng trapping Franklyn against the cage before taking him down and making him tap with an arm triangle.

Result: Pai Cheng defeats Wilson Franklyn (Submission (Arm Triangle) in 4:16 of round 1). The match was rated as Decent

Kendall Tracey (10-3-1 NC) v Adrian Swall (9-2) - Light Heavyweight

Another prelim and another first round submission. This time it's Kendall Tracey with the win via an armbar. It took him a little while to take Swall down, mainly because Swall got away with grabbing hold of the cage twice, but once it was on the ground it took mere seconds to get the win.

Result: Kendall Tracey defeats Adrian Swall (Submission (Armbar) in 2:00 of round 1). The match was rated as Great

Main Card

George Pickering (11-2) v Efren Luat (11-0) - Super Heavyweight Title

Luat wastes no time in this fight, closing the distance and landing some big strikes, Pickering eventually goes down under the pressure and Luat spends the rest of the round on top. With is stocky build he never leaves an arm exposed to allow Pickering to work the sub and Luat takes the first round with ease.

Round 2 follows the same pattern as round 1 and Luat almost finishes it a couple of times with the ground and pound, Pickering somehow holds on and we go to round 3.

This time Luat doesn't mess around, there's no need to go to the ground as his right cross knocks Pickering cold. Dominant performance for Luat as he takes the Super Heavyweight Title.

Result: Efren Luat defeats George Pickering (Knock Out (Punch) in 1:09 of round 3) The match was rated as Good

Luis Basora (22-7) v Brandon Sugar (28-7) - Lightweight

The less said about this fight the better, Basora uses his clinch game to work Sugar over for most of the fight. There is a brief spark of excitement when Sugar gets a takedown in the second, but Basora's ground game is good enough to neutralise him. By the end of the fight Basora has landed 175 strikes, and not one of them looked like it hurt.

Result: Luis Basora defeats Brandon Sugar (Unanimous Decision). The match was rated as Poor

Toby Sorkin (12-0) v William Harrison (12-0-1) - Light Heavyweight

Sorkin clinches, then gets the trip takedown. He mounts Harrison who doesn't seem to know how to defend himself and it's all over as Sorkin grabs the arm triangle. Not sure if that was a great performance by Sorkin or a terrible one by Harrison but a wins a win.

Result: Toby Sorkin defeats William Harrison (Submission (Arm Triangle) in 1:25 of round 1). The match was rated as being Good.

Helio (21-1) v Atep of Indonesia (14-1-1 NC) - Lightweight

Helio comes out blazing, he rocks Atep with a roundhouse kick and almost puts him down with a flying knee. Atep recovers and the rest of the round is pretty even, you'd probably give it to Helio though based on that opening salvo.

Round 2 cements Helio as the aggressor as he spends nearly all of it on the front foot, Atep is doing his best to land some shots on the counter but Helio is definitely coming out better on the exchanges, Atep finally changes strategy and goes on the attack, grabbing Helio and pulling guard, the round ends though before he can do anything. Helio leads two rounds to nil.

Atep knows he needs a finish and he rushes Helio, pushing him up against the cage. Helio reverses it though and keeps Atep pinned there until the ref breaks it up. Atep rushes him again and pulls guard to take it to the ground. Helio smothers him there to and the fight is over.

After the fight Helio calls out Morrison, which is handy as that's his next opponent.

Result: Helio defeats Atep of Indonesia (Unanimous Decision). The match was rated as Good

Co-Main Event

Buddy Garner (17-4) v Bill Brown (11-0) - Middleweight

Garner gets an early takedown but lands in Brown's guard, Brown hangs on tight and tries to grab an arm but Garner resists. Garner then tries to go for a leglock but can't break free from Brown's guard. Brown tries to grab the arm again but again Garner resists and goes for the leg again, without luck. The ref stands them up, Brown is breathing heavily and Garner takes him down again just as the round ends.

Round 2 sees both fighters happy to stand and strike, perhaps realising that they are too evenly matched on the ground. It's a back and forth round and it's impossible to call.

Round 3 sees Brown attack. he is throwing a lot of punches and he backs Garner up, suddenly Garner explodes and takes Brown down. He grabs the leg and and forces Brown to tap. That picks up submission of the night, which given how many subs there have been tonight is quite an achievement.

Result: Buddy Garner defeats Bill Brown (Submission (Heel Hook) in 2:59 of round 3). The match was rated as being Great

Main Event

Gyokusho Fujimoto (15-2) v James Foster (36-6-1) - Heavyweight Title

Fujimoto starts well, picking his shots and landing most of them. Foster isn't interested in trading shots and goes for the takedown repeatedly, Fujimoto defends well but succumbs on the 5th attempt, Foster quickly gains mount but the round ends before he can do any real damage. Round 1 goes to Fujimoto.

Round 2 sees Foster get the takedown early with a belly to belly. He moves from half guard straight to mount, then grabs an arm. Fujimoto tries to hang on but has to tap before he gets his arm broken. Foster has recaptured the title at 37!

James Foster defeats Gyokusho Fujimoto (Submission (Armbar) in 2:25 of round 2). The match was rated as being Fantastic

That was a great event, capped by a Fantastic main event. Foster is now a two time champion and at Mid Level International he can headline against anyone, which opens up the Heavyweight Division. It will be interesting to see if Foster can defend it.

Buddy Garner is a good challenger for Kanchelskis at Middleweight, he's Mid National popularity and has three wins in a row. I fancy Kanchelskis to beat him but his BJJ will present a different kind of challenge.

Helio is the clear number one contender at Lightweight, he's +5 Momentum and the fact he is only Mid Regional popularity doesn't matter against Morrison. It will be a good battle of styles and I'm looking forward to it.

Toby Sorkin beat Harrison with ease, he needs a step up in competition next time out to really put himself forward as a contender. Harrison is pretty much a bust at this point and will be on the prelims.

Basora won but it was pretty dreadful and he didn't gain any momentum, he remains useful as a gatekeeper but that's about it. Sugar gets cut after his 4th loss in a row, a sad end for an ex-champion.

Luat smashed Pickering to pick up the Super Heavyweight Title. However there will continue to be doubts about him due to the fact he didn't beat the reigning champ.

The prelims went to plan, with the win for Ken Peters being the only real disappointment.

I've finally got my laptop repaired and I'm going to be carrying on with this dynasty starting today. I'm going to start a new thread to make it easier for anyone picking this up for the first time. You can always read back through this thread to find out what's already happened, although I'll do a summary at the start of of the new thread to bring everyone up to date.
