NEW YORK’S NEW LEADING MAN

In one of the industry’s work kept secrets, New York City Wrestling named Ernie Turner the new Head Booker of the company. Rumors started flying in early December that the hectic scheduled required of a creative leader had the current man in charge, 52-year-old Bo [black Hat] Bailey, feeling weary. NYCW Owner Larry Vessey did little to dispel the notion that Turner would be Bailey’s eventual replacement. Vessey confirmed the change via a press release sent out to all major professional wrestling websites including TEW.com. In it, Vessey praised Turner’s knowledge of the business and his ability to be fair in dealing with other members of the roster.

Turner began his career with the defunct Southern Class Championship Wrestling in the late 1990s, gaining notoriety under a mask as Assassin #2, teaming alongside Coyote Dynamite as The Southern Assassins. The team ended up winning the SCCW Tag Team Championship twice before the company went bankrupt. Turner spent the next seven years toiling away at the independent scene in both the South East and Tri-State regions before retiring from active competition. Former NYCW Owner The Stomper, long impressed with Turner’s ability on the microphone, quickly offered him a gig as the promotion’s Colour Commentator. When Vessey assumed control of the promotion in late 2010,he retained Turner, calling him “one of the most valuable men in the building”.

TEW.com managed to contact Turner via e-mail about his new role in New York City Wrestling.

You’ve been with NYCW for four years now. How long has this change been in the works?

It wasn’t until recently that Bo [black Hat Bailey] complained about the hours. He’s winding down his career and sometime in September or October mentioned to Larry that he wanted to focus on what was left of his in-ring work. Larry looked at a lot of candidates. He finally told me I’d be taking over about two or three weeks ago.

NYCW is often derided as being stale, a remnant of a long-forgotten era dominated by the SWF at its most cartoonish. Others call it a knock-off of USPW, a place where the lesser known veterans can collect a paycheck. Is that an accurate assessment?

I don’t think so. We have guys who’ve been in the business a long time. Bailey. Whistler. Steve [Flash]. We have guys who are younger. Scott [Animal] Harker. Brandon Smith. I think it’s a nice balance where the younger wrestlers have a lot of people who can show them the ropes.

So it’s safe to say that you have no plans to change the way NYCW does business?

Why would I? It’d be like if Burger King started selling spaghetti and meatballs. We run family-friendly shows. No blood. No foul language. We’ve been in business over 25 years now. Everybody’s always changing things up. New and improved! Even though Bo is stepping down and I’m grabbing the reigns, I can promise you this. Nothing will be new. Nothing will be improved.

Promotion Biography

New York City Wrestling is unapologetically a throwback to an older era. The company was created by old-school veteran The Stomper and has changed little since our debut in 1988 - to this day, we provide traditional wrestling with minimal glitz. Our loyal fan base would have it no other way, pointing out that while it may not be glamorous, it is consistently value for money.

The Stomper finally retired in 2010, handing over the promotion to his chosen successor, Larry Vessey, who thus far seems to have gone with a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" strategy and kept NYCW firmly on their usual old-school course. With the recent appointment of Ernie Turner as Larry Vessey's second-in-command, we believe that NYCW will continue to provide great, family-friendly entertainment to fans in the Tri State area, and who knows, maybe beyond.

Thanks man. It's been a while. Last two dynasties made it two months and a month in game time so I decided to try something new. After doing the Active Diary Index, I realize that there were so few dynasties (outside of your GSW) that were based around the smaller CVerse promotions. NYCW was my first long term game in TEW 2010 and so I decided to give them another shot.

This Saturday, New York City Wrestling is offering a night of fun, fights, and fan-friendly excitement in Queens.

The night's main event will see a rematch from last month's show. Roger "Smooth" Cage, one of the fan favorites on the roster, managed to wrestle away the NYCW Empire Championship from the fearsome, monstrous, Man Mountain Cahill! Now, the menacing Cahill is out for revenge and nobody's sure whether Cage can smooth talk his way out of this one!

Thanks to our friends in Maryland, there's another big match this weekend, a rare unification title match. The NYCW Tag Team Champions, The Ring Generals, will put their belts on the line against the Mid Atlantic Tag Team Championship holders, The Dynamite Express. Fans might not be familiar with the young duo from MAW, but they are two of the hottest prospects this sport has to offer. And in a show of confidence, The Dynamite Express has agreed to put their belts on the line! One team is walking out of Queens with two championships to their names.

But, that's not all! Also in action will be many more of the stars of New York City Wrestling. Steve Flash! The dastardly Black Hat Bailey! Bulldozer Brandon Smith! The Southern Stars. Come down to Queens this Saturday or watch it live on NYCW.net for all the hard-hitting action!
