Movie Tycoon Reborn

Back by semi-popular demand! The idea is a simple one. You create a movie while trying to make a profit and please the critics (me!). Throughout the life time of this game is has evolved rapidly. My plan is to bring it back to the basics. That may not be a popular decision but I think it will make it a little bit easier to moderate.

RULES

You start your studio of with 1 million dollars. Using that money you choose your cast, director, production budget, and marketing budget. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GO OVER BUDGET.

Each day players will make movies with the cast of their choice, however, if a cast member has already been used in any role other than a cameo then they can not be used again until the following day.

There is a limit of 1 movie per person per day. This gives me enough time to keep up on the game and not get bogged down by reviews.

If you don't see the name of the cast member you want in the google doc please let me know and I will add them.

Keep an eye on the current trends, they will be a huge part in determining the success of your movie.

My next post I will include a standard form to use when filling out the data. I will then include a small example of what I'm talking about because I realize it sounds super confusing.

<p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:18px;">Use this form</span></strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step One - Pre-Production</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Title:</strong></p><p>

<strong>Rating (i.e. G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17):</strong></p><p>

<strong>Genre:</strong> (Drama, Thriller, Comedy, Action, Sci-Fi, Arthouse, War, Western, etc)</p><p>

<strong>Brief summary of the movie:</strong></p><p>

<strong>Amount you plan to spend on production:</strong> This is important now. The talents might be upset if the budget turns out to be lower than expected. There are exceptions but always try to estimate well.</p><p>

<strong>Amount you plan to spend on marketing:</strong>This is important now. The talents might be upset if the budget turns out to be lower than expected. There are exceptions but always try to estimate well.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>You then must list the actors/actresses/directors you want to contact for this film. You should include things like:</strong></p><p>

What will their role be? (Director, main lead, second lead, supporting, cameo)</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Main lead</strong> - The major character of a movie.</p><p>

<strong>Second lead</strong> - The "midcard" character of a movie, this includes less-important lead characters and also the major supports.</p><p>

<strong>Supporting </strong>- All the minor supports belong here.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Optional:</strong> Will they be expected to show any nudity? (You only need to tell me if there's nudity. Otherwise, it's all "no nudity".)</p><p>

<strong>What other perks are you offering?</strong> (This can range from a leading role in your next film to a larger sized trailer during shooting)</p><p> </p><p>

You then must wait for a response from the actor/actress/director before you can begin shooting your film.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Step Two - Post-Production</strong></p></div><p></p><p>

This is to be filled out AFTER all talent has agreed to terms with your company and you're ready to start shooting. Most of this should be carried over from your previous post. You are not allowed to alter those things in Post Production (for example if an actor agrees to a lead role in a PG-13 movie you can't then change it to a supporting role in a rated R movie).</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Starting Cash:</strong></p><p>

<strong>Title-</strong></p><p>

<strong>Lead Actor- </strong>(Secondary leads are also lead. There can be more than 1 main and secondary lead.)</p><p>

<strong>Lead Actress-</strong> (See above.)</p><p>

<strong>Supporting Actor-</strong> (OPTIONAL, but gives better quality value.)</p><p>

<strong>Supporting Actress- </strong>(See above.)</p><p>

<strong>Director -</strong> (This could have a huge impact on the direction and overall success of your movie.)</p><p>

<strong>Genre- </strong>(Drama, Thriller, Comedy, Action, Sci-Fi, Arthouse, War, Western, etc)</p><p>

<strong>Rating-</strong> (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17)</p><p>

<strong>Plot-</strong> (Give an explanation that is decent enough. The better the explanation of the plot, including referring to which actor is which character, and what the gist of the story is, the more likely your movie will succeed. Player in writer mode should be expected to cover more ground with the plot here as they are a huge part of the movie's final rating. A player in boss mode can also write huge plot if they want to but a summary with precise points to the whole movie will be fine. Always try to stand out, look for things that separate your movie from the other movies of same genre and tell me that)</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Location-</strong> (Location filmed in, whether it be UK, US, etc. You can go more detailed, stating states, city or specific venues.)</p><p>

<strong>Production- </strong>(A single number will do but one can go more indepth(like groundbreaking 3D effect) if they want to, no big advantage of going indepth)</p><p>

<strong>Marketing-</strong> (A single number will do but one can go more indepth just for fun)</p><p>

<strong>Duration - </strong>(Length of the movie... Too short and people won't bother wasting their money or the story is told in full potential; too long and they will grow bored of even a great flick. Genre has some impact on this, it's much harder for someone to accept a 150 minute comedy than a 150 minute war movie.)</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Budget:</strong> (Total of talent + production + marketing)</p><p> </p><p>

Movies sizes when paying for production: > 5,000,000 = Small/Independent, > 25,000,000 Average Production Costs, 100,000,000 or more is considered a Blockbuster with Mega advertising.</p>

<p>I should probably point out that the price the actor asks for is based on a number of different factors, the largest being their "Star Power" on the spread sheet. The higher the number the more in demand the actor and thus their asking price goes up. With this being just the first round of offers I except people to catch on of course, I just thought it was worth mentioning since I'm noticing most of the cast costs being pretty hefty right of the jump. </p><p> </p><p>

Looks like everyone wants to make the first box office smash instead of growing into their company <img alt=";)" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/wink.png.686f06e511ee1fbf6bdc7d82f6831e53.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

For now as a bit of a gap fill I've just been adding them to the actor list so they are at least somewhere.</p><p> </p><p> No trends yet, those will come once some movies get produced, right now nothing exists thus we can't know what people do and don't want =)</p>

Kevin Spacey will do your movie for 175,000

Jason Statham will do your movie for 225,000

Phillip Seymour Hoffman (I took him off the list since he passed away. I don't want to set a precedence of using deceased actors.)

Kiefer Sutherland will do your role for will do your movie for 50,000 (I gave you a deep discount for my mistake of not taking Hoffman off the list)

Emma Stone will do your movie for 125,000

Jennifer Lawrence will do your movie for 125,000

Hugh Jackman will do your movie for 10,000 per 15 minutes of on screen time (can't exceed 1 hour)

Ryan Gosling will do your movie for 10,000 per 15 minutes of on screen time (can't exceed 1 hour)

Doesn't look like you've listed a director, you may want one or the movie will turn into a circus ;)

Please let me know which offers you accept and include the final tally for expected Cast cost at the bottom.

Okay, I have 250,000 to spend. I accept Kiether's offer, and tell him that I am glad to be working with such an experienced actor. I offer Kevin Spacey 100,000 plus the lead role in two of my next five films, PLUS up to 75,000 of this films profits. (For example, if I make 50,000 in the green (which means I'd have 1,050,000, Spacey would get that 50,000, but if I made 80,000, Spacey would get 75,000) If that needs clearing up, I can explain more. I accept Jackman's offer, and tell him that he will be on the film for fifteen minutes, in one scene. I turn down Stone and Lawrence, because I simply can't afford them at this stage. I approach Kaley Couco and Sarah Hyland for The Dark Widow Role. As for director, I shall wait until further notice until there is a list up. Also, can Melissa McCarthy be added to the actress section?

Kevin Spacey will agree to 100,000 IF he gets the lead in your next 2 films (not 2 of your next 5)

Jackman agrees to your terms

Kaley Couco will agree to do your film for 50,000

Sarah Hyland will agree to do your film for 45,000

Melissa has been added

Alright gang, a short list (about 30 or so) of directors has been added. Obviously, there's vast room for more so if there's someone else you want added just let me know and we can start getting them in there. I just wanted to get something up so people had something to go off of.

I would like to approach Thomas Vinterberg and Andrew Dominik for director of The Wingman's Revenge. I accept Sarah Hyland's offer to play The Dark Widow, and let her know that I see her as a potential break out hit in this film. I also would like to tell Spacey that he has a deal, and that I look forward to working with him in my company's infant phases.

Suggestions for more directors (some of these guys may not be directing anymore):

Charlie Kaufman

Michael Mann

Terry Gilliam

F Gary Grey

Jay Roach

Todd Phillips

Bryan Singer

Spike Lee

Roland Emmerich

Oliver Stone

John Dahl

Kevin Smith

Barry Levinson

Steven Soderbergh

Gore Verbinski

David Cronenberg

Robert Zemeckis

John Landis

William Friedkin

Tim Burton

Joel Schumacher

Kathryn Bigelow

Also, a suggestion to add Michael Shannon to the actors list & maybe a few larger actresses for roles that wouldn't fit for the typical skinny actress (someone like Margo Martindale, Kathy Bates & Cathryn Manheim)
