DOTM: May 2015 Nominations

Recommended Posts

I do agree that the Thunderverse community is on the rise -- and I think after NoNeck's newest Secrets of The Ring takes off, it will spike again. I don't think it is to the level yet where they warrant their own category, and I think five categories is a lot to consider when three are struggling for nominations.

I think the best solution is to merge the Thunderverse/9000verse/London-Verse with the Cornellverse category, and have the other category include RW Dynasties. The way I see it: Thunderverse and other mods are designed by the players to fit with the game engine, while a Real World Mod is designed to adjust the Wrestling Business to Adam's game engine. I've always found it odd that fictional and real world databases were competing against each other.

I think this addresses the shift in the casual fan towards the Real World Mod, and balances the nomination pool as well.

Each month, everyone has five votes for their favourite diaries from the month. You rank them 1st to 5th and this ranking assigns them points (5 for 1st down to 1 for 5th). The five diaries you rank can be from any mod (CV / RW / TV / other) and the only criteria they must meet is that a show must have been posted in that month. That's it. Doesn't matter if you won last month or you're a HOFer or it's a new diary or anything. Don't have 5 you want to vote for? Doesn't matter - if you only vote for one diary, it gets 5 points.

At the end of the nomination phase; all points are added up and the diary with the most points in ranked 1st for the month. At this stage we can cut up the rankings however we sit fit.

So for one round of nominations (5 diaries each) you could have several different top 5's (as an example) in different categories. You'd have an Overall top 5 obviously; but you could just rank the CV diaries or just the RW, just the TV, just the other mods, a top 5 for new diaries, endless possibilities. But the nomination and voting phase is consolidated into one thread each month rather than a nomination thread and several polls.

In my mind at least, it tidies the whole monthly process up and makes it easier for all concerned.

By not limiting who can be voted/nominated it allows you to cut the pie in any way you see fit. Want to see the top 5 for previous winners? Easy! Top 5 new entrants? No problem. But there's no extra hassle of picking a diary to fit a certain criteria and no extra polls each month getting lost on the board.

If there's a bias for RW diaries one month, then that might affect other mods in the overall rankings but it's fair game in there own segment.

I'm happy for this to be discussed, tweaked, ignored, lambasted, whatever. Just a rambling idea whilst I'm on my lunch at work.

I actually like this a lot, it sort of reminds me of how they do the Heisman Trophy voting. That way you can look at the rankings and see where everybody is. I am not sure if it would be a huge pain in the butt to do it that way but I like the idea.

Got a question...Is there a way we could see past winners instead of looking the threads up one by one...If we go with Anderz system we might just be able to update the front page with the current standings and the second page used for past winners. This way if the thread gets lost on the first page we can just search for one unified thread instead of dozens or a nomination thread and a voting thread.

Or one even better...we can have the DOTM thread stickied so it never gets bumped away and lost. Just throwing some ideas out there.

For DOTM: I would like to nominate Fruitloop's WWE 2009: Undisputed diary. He's been building to WrestleMania for quite some time now and it promises to be a landmark show in his diary just in terms of predictions alone. Here's to hoping that show delivers. :D

For Monthly Spotlight: I would like to nominate WCW Spring Stampede 2000 from Blodyxe's Rebooking Nitro's diary. It was an excellent show, especially the Hart vs. Benoit match that deserved, and rightfully got, an entire post of its own. Blody's diary is hugely under appreciated IMO, it's one of the most interesting reads on the board and you should all check it out. :)

Thanks, Moot! Glad to see ya back in the fold.

Yeah, Wrestlemania has (I think yours makes) 16 predictions so far, which is completely mind-boggling to me. It's definitely bound to get people talking. I just hope it's in a good way. ;)

First of all, we should be up-to-date. You have less than 24 hours to get in your nominations. So make sure your favorites go up there!

I would like to address a few of the issues brought up within the thread. I was simply looking to add a way for the C-verse and the Mod sections to also be faced against one another to determine an all-time diary of the month in a way. I think it might be a very interesting addition. However, now, we seem to be talking about the 'system being broken.' That the awards 'have become a joke.' That is very disheartening to someone who has been working on this for a very long time and sometimes(usually) not having a diary be nominated at all. But I still do this because I believe in it. I believe that it works and helps to show people that their hard work means something above and beyond the enjoyment of the work.

I definitely don't think that the system is broken or that the awards have become a joke. Not at all. And I apologise if my input was viewed in that way.

I love that you put in lots of hard work on this, and I respect that it takes time away from you writing your awesome WWE Diary... I think the system works as it is, in that if your diary is good enough (or someone likes it enough to make the effort) it gets nominated, which is an awesome feeling! It's then up against other diaries from the same 'universe' and if your readers like yours, they vote for it... I can't see anything wrong with that! I do however think that if someone could collate how many times someone has won each award, or a diary has won each award, that'd be awesome to see!

To your second point about sometimes not being nominated, I'd like to address that by nominating your WWE Diary: WWE 2015: The Road Through Wrestlemania and Beyond! I love the promotions of Steen/Balor... Having run the DOTM for a time (though not nearly as long as you have), I definitely appreciate the work you put in, angel, especially while continuing to work on diaries of your own. I think it's a good idea to always look for ways to refine, update or improve the process (as you yourself have done and continue to do, hence the 'Legends' category you suggested), but in no way would I consider the current system a joke.

When I said joke I was talking more about the End of the Year Awards and the HOF and less about the monthly awards.

In regards to the HOF, as I have stated before certain writers will always have an unfair advantage over others because they have the "right" people reading their diaries who can give them extra votes in the nomination and voting process. I know the rule is there to reward people who are in the HOF but it still gives a big advantage for some people to get in (No I am not talking about myself because I am not delusional enough to think I belong in the HOF.) over others.

The End of Year Awards were a complete joke. Only a small group of posters were informed that those awards were even going on so they got to dictate who was nominated and who won. I did not even have a diary going on at the time so those awards had nothing to do with me. Though I think something like that should have been opened to a public vote because that might have meant more diversity in nominations and winners.

In regards to the Legends Award, well to me that is just rewarding the same people over and over again. As I have said before some people are very good writers and nobody even bothers with them because maybe the promotion they are writing for is not as known as the WWE or the SWF (Just using the two popular promotions from both the RW and C-Verse). Or it is not a time period that is popular with the readers on this board. Oldschool was one of the best real world writers on here and his WWWF diary is right up there with TFC's ROH and Michgcs' WWE diaries as one of the best diaries on the board.

However, he never seemed to get the support that he probably should have because his era of the WWWF/WWF/WWE was just not popular enough on this board and he made a point of saying that Hulk Hogan would not be joining his version of the WWWF. Therefore, someone like Oldschool would never be up for a Legends Award because he did not have mass support, despite the fact that he was a great writer.

I do think that Anderz's suggestion is a good way to do the monthly awards (I guess it would be more of a monthly standings than awards) as it gives people the chance to vote for multiple diaries and that in my opinion would help have more diversity in the standings because diaries that normally may not be nominated would be nominated.

I'm not sure there's an answer to the issues you've raised there. I can't comment on certain diaries as I haven't read them all word for word, but you're saying you enjoyed

OldSchool's writing/diary but because not many other people did, he didn't get voted for DOTM awards?

The only way to fix this problem would be to give the minority votes that are worth more than other people, but who decides who these people are? and are they going to read every single diary word for word? I don't think so. So therefore at their essence, the DOTM awards are a popularity contest and will be won by people who have the most people that vote for them... and the most people that read them... So if you want DOTM awards, write for WWE/SWF or other popular promotions and you're quids in! ;)

EDIT: Plus, I don't think I have the 'right' people reading my diary and I got in the Hall of Fame this year because my first ever diary has over 5,000 posts and 300 shows (WWE) and I had a lot of readers/voters

I've gotten found several diaries I really enjoy simply because seeing them nominated made me give them a shot.

While I didn't start the whole DOTM thing , I was one of the first ones to keep it going back in 2008 so I can really appreciate the dedication of Angeldelayette for taking up the mantle and keeping it going for so long.

While the board has grown and evolved over the almost ten years I have been part of it, I am fine with the categories as they are Real World, c-verse or other and spotlight to recognize mods or other things that add value to TEW.

For me, although winning DOTM is an honor, its more of an honor to be nominated simply because it means someone else thought your work was worthy of note and in being nominated it may bring attention to your work from others who may not otherwise have taken the time or thought about looking it over.

There is a lot of good work both real world and c-verse or other mod-verse and even at this late point ( with tew 2013 having been out almost 2 years now) there are still a large number of active diaries and more starting every day. It's easy to get lost in that shuffle and most of us only really read a handful of diaries at a time. So giving that extra bit of notice is what the DOTM brings to the table and I am happy to have been part of it in the beginning and to see it still around now.

I was merely throwing suggestions or adding to previous ideas. Honestly I don't know how you have to time or the patience to be as active on these forums as you are. I love your work and love the DOTM concepts.

I would never say the system is "broken" because it isn't. I think the system is great. I think the work you do on the forum is great! You are the man and don't let anybody else tell you any different.

DOTM has pointed me to a load of diaries that I wouldn't have noticed before. I think my crime is not giving some of the writers the credit they deserve by nominating them when I should have.

The DOTM will always be a success as people appreciate the work that goes into them and it shows people getting recognition through democracy. Having said that, I think Anderz suggesting is a great one, things evolve over time and that doesn't mean in any way shape or form that things have been wrong or 'a joke' but everything changes over time as new ideas come into the fold.

Who knows, if the suggestion by Anderz is implemented (Angels discretion), you could also start a possible "all-time" ranking which will show all the accumulated points of a diary which could then also have impact on Hall of Fame etc.

Anegl, keep up the great work you are doing. Regardless of how you want to progress with DOTM, you are doing a stellar job!
