G1 Climax 25 Night 2

July 25th, 2015

Professional wrestling's most prestigious tournament makes it way to Fukuoka, just 24 hours after the first leg. Naomichi Marufuji and Satoshi Kojima will be putting their feet up as Tetsuya Naito is welcomed to competition against the man that he formed an alliance with just four months ago, Minoru Suzuki. Kazuchika Okada gets up and running against Tomoaki Honma.

But tonight is all about Hiroshi Tanahashi and AJ Styles, the latter of which will be looking to avenge defeat at February's The New Beginning In Osaka.

Yuji Nagata - I need to stop marking out so hard for Fale and get on board with the Anti-Aging Star.

Shelton X Benjamin - Now that Yano has scored a flukey two points, now he goes down.

Shibata - Honestly, would not mind seeing Alberto get skunked and end the G1 with zero points.

Roderick Strong - He can win using his.... Strong style! Get it? Get it?!

Togi Makabe - Just to even things up more, I guess.

S'mo Jo - I feel like, even if you don't have him win, you'll give him a grand showing.

Nakamura - YEAOH.

Okada - Rainmaykah picks up strong win in his first G1 match here.

Naito - Naito picks up a solid one.

AJ Styles - If anyone can put Tanahashi down for a three, I think it'll be AJ, to make up for the previous night's loss.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Yuji Nagata (2) vs. Bad Luck Fale (0)

Comments: As much as I hate Fale, he may end up with 2 or 4 points in this tournament and Nagata might be one of those people that he beats.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Shelton X Benjamin (0) vs. Toru Yano (2)

Comments: I might lose in this prediction, but it may be predictable for Yano to cheat his way to victory on the second night.

Comments: There will be some people that Alberto will be able to beat, but not Shibata.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Kota Ibushi (0) vs. Roderick Strong (0)

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Hirooki Goto (2) vs. Samoa Joe (2)

Comments: While I do think Samoa Joe will become a darkhorse in this tournament there will be certain people he will not be able to beat and I think Hirooki Goto will be one of them in this tournament.

Shinsuke Nakamura (2) vs. Karl Anderson (2)

Comments: Karl Anderson for the upset.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Yuji Nagata (2) vs. Bad Luck Fale (0)

Fale had come so close to bettering Nakamura and was in a foul mood tonight. Nagata put up a spirited effort, trying his best to chop Fale down to size. But the clubbing forearm blows and not-so-subtle slams from ]The Underboss took their toll before the Bad Luck Fall sealed a rebound victory for big Bad Luck Fale.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Shelton X Benjamin (0) vs. Toru Yano (2)

Shelton ambushed Yano on the ramp as he was making the entrance. No! Watch that CHAOS DVD! A fan might want to buy that!

Benjamin rolled YTR into the ring, but not before he whipped him face first into the steel ring post. Yano was plucky in his attempts to try and steal a victory but nothing was doing. Benjamin powered out of a schoolboy and splattered Yano's face to the canvas with a decisive Paydirt.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Katsuyori Shibata (2) vs. Alberto El Patron (0)

From the absurd to the preposterous, El Patron made an asserted effort to prove his mettle against Shibata. Although he couldn't match The Wrestler strike for strike, Alberto proved he could absorb an ungodly amount of punishment and still have enough in the tank to fight back. Eventually his endurance paid dividends when he ducked an Arched Big Boot and managed to single out Shibata's arm for a Cross Armbreaker. Even though the former IWGP Tag Team Champion eventually made the ropes, the damage was done. He couldn't apply a Sleeper Hold nor get El Patron in position for the Go To Sleep. This opened the door for Mexico's Greatest Export who locked on a second Cross Armbreaker. Shibata fought the hold valiantly but found himself with no choice to submit.

One wonders if tapping out earlier might have been wise for Shibata, especially with nine more legs to go before we reach the final.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Kota Ibushi (0) vs. Roderick Strong (0)

After starting out on the wrong foot yesterday, Ibushi had to shake the cobwebs off in order to bounce back. He was put through his paces as Strong made good use of his Backbreakers, the variations of which are certainly starting to gain him some fans in the land of the rising sun. But Ibushi fed off the energy of our capacity crowd, fighting through the pain to put Strong down after a Sit-Out Powerbomb. A rather abrupt finish followed as Ibushi then hit the Phoenix Splash to take home the 2 points.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Togi Makabe (0) vs. Tomohiro Ishii (2)

In a tournament setting like this, it's the physical matches that have the most energy and thus, wind up being the most entertaining. There was nothing fancy on display here: no Sasuke Specials, no Hurricanranas; just forearm strikes, lariatos and power moves designed to break bones. Of the two competitors, Makabe appeared the more determined, reducing Ishii to the familiar role of the underdog. Although the Stone Pitbull didn't throw in the towel, he was simply overpowered. Knocked silly after a huge King Kong Lariat, Ishii soon found himself subject to a flying knee to the face (King Kong Knee Drop) and probably wasn't even aware he was being pinned.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Hirooki Goto (2) vs. Samoa Joe (2)

Joe impressed on debut against Shelton but Goto was a different story entirely. The ex-IWGP Tag Team Champion is used to fighting guys that deliver strikes with great power and didn't allow Joe to bully him. Directing his offence towards the neck of the Samoan Submission Machine, Goto thought he had the match won after an Ushikoroshi (Fireman's Carry Neckbreaker). But Joe showed some endearing fighting spirit and fought on. The onslaught continued though, a Belly to Back Suplex left the former TNA World Heavyweight Champion folded up like an accordion. Joe did manage to summon the energy to hit a stiff Leg Lariat but looked to be running on fumes. Hence, when Goto's Shouten Kai eventually connected, the rest was academic.

Eight Man Tag Team Match

Katsuhiko Nakajima, Hiyoroshi Tenzan, Captain New Japan & Sho Tanaka vs. Kazushi Sakuraba, Watanabe, Manabu Nakanishi & Yohei Komatsu

A wild match between a plethora of fan favourites, our audience decided they were supporting Komatsu and Tanaka tonight. Probably because the pace was grinded to a snail's pace whenever Nakanishi, Sakuraba or Tenzan were in the ring. Captain New Japan enjoyed himself, bringing everybody down with almighty Shoulder Tackles! But Katsuhiko Nakajima came out the match the real winner, pinning the gutsy young lion Yohei Komatsu after a Death Roll.

Six Man Tag Team Match

KUSHIDA, Alex Shelley & U-T vs. Suzuki-gun (TAKA Michinoku, Taichi & El Desperado)

After falling to defeat next to Komatsu & U-T, KUSHIDA had long-time partner Alex Shelley on his side tonight. Suzuki-gun were always up against it, resorting to dastardly tactics far earlier than usual (the opening seconds as opposed to after a couple of minutes). Although they isolated U-T, KUSHIDA and Alex Shelley turned the tide before Taichi tapped out exactly two seconds after KUSHIDA had applied the Hoverboard Lock.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Shinsuke Nakamura (2) vs. Karl Anderson (2)

After traversing the obstacle that was Bad Luck Fale, Nakamura was looking to do the double over the Bullet Club. He had tough competition in Karl Anderson, a bonafide main eventer that has proven himself to be more than capable in the single ranks. Despite the fact, Anderson has been more a tag wrestler than anything else over the last two years and the divide in class between himself and Nakamura became more evident the longer the match went on. Anderson's Gun Stun attempt being little more than desperate, 'Machine Gun' got a Backstabber for his efforts before a BOMA YE!~ put this one to bed.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Kazuchika Okada (0) vs. Tomoaki Honma (0)

Two new title holders are looking to prove a point here and after Okada's comments about Honma's Kokeshi being a stupid move, it's apt that Mr. Kokeshi comes out all guns blazing and has The Rainmaker on the back foot. A big shoulder charge knocks Okada down and Honma taps his head, rebounds off the ropes... and misses his first Kokeshi. :(

Now Okada can control the match but he struggles to keep Honma at bay. The underdog keeps on coming back, sparking our capacity crowd into a frenzy as he delivers a Lariat and finally manages to connect with a Kokeshi! :D But he misses a Diving variation of the move, headbutting only canvas. Okada steadfastly makes matter worse with a Tombstone Piledriver and then finishes this one off with the devastating Rainmaker Lariat.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Tetsuya Naito (0) vs. Minoru Suzuki (0)

Even though they're being forced to fight each other, neither Naito nor Suzuki hold anything back here. MiSu looks to test his prize pig, working over his legs and arms with all kinds of painful holds and submissions. He really excels in his veteran role and almost seems to get a sick pleasure out of hyper extending Naito's left arm in a Fujiwara Armbar. The Stardust Genius smiles, enjoying the fact that he's in a proper fight with Suzuki. He bravely throws forearm smashes before a nasty Enzuigiri buys him some valuable breathing space. Once the two men are standing, the gloves come off and they start exchanging slaps in the middle of the ring! That is, until the IWGP Heavyweight Champion catches Suzuki's right arm and reels him in for a Pluma Blanca (STF into a Koji Clutch).

Suzuki doesn't submit (obviously) but Naito is just beginning to switch gears and slams Suzuki into the canvas with a Dragon Suplex. Offended by the kick out, Naito is fortunate he isn't countered when he hits a second. But he gets the same result and elects to finish this one off before Suzuki recovers. Gloria connects and then, the Stardust Press has Naito pinning his unit's figurehead.

Post-match, Naito looks a little worse for wear. The adrenaline having worn off, he has a noticeable limp and begins favouring his left arm. But he helps TAKA Michinoku attend to Suzuki and the two shake hands before leaving together in the most lowkey way imaginable, hardly acknowledging the audience that really enjoyed the match they just had.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Hiroshi Tanahashi (2) vs. AJ Styles (0)

Even though the action of this match was largely enjoyable, this isn't the first time that these two have failed to elevate their match to the next level. The match they had at The New Beginning suffered from the same problem. It's not for lack of chemistry as these two do work really well together but something is most definitely missing. For the most part, the two just seem to go through the motions. Tanahashi dictates the pace until Styles stunts his momentum with a Springboard Flying Forearm Smash. The pace quickens as Tanahashi rallies back, forcing a last gasp kick out after a Straitjacket Bridging German Suplex. But he telegraphs the Sling Blade, getting caught with a Dropkick as he charges in. Styles drops Tana on his head with the Bloody Sunday and then puts him away for good with the Styles Clash.

Bouncing back after an embarrassing defeat to the great YTR yesterday, Styles celebrated by pulling Tanahashi's head up and pointing his finger gun at the chin of the Ace. He might have fried New Japan's biggest fish tonight but Mauro Ranallo on commentary was quick to assert that there's still eight more matches for The Phenomenal One to negotiate before he can possibly make the final. Styles leaves and heads to the back.

As Tanahashi regains consciousness, he stays on his back staring straight up at the lights. Ranallo remarks that a minor setback is the best stage for a major comeback. One would hope that's the prevailing thought running through Tanahashi's mind as he neglects to close the show with a rousing speech and finally decides to take his walk of shame.

That grade for Tanahashi vs. Styles is baffling if they don't have poor chemistry.

Yeah, no chemistry note. I really don't understand it. Both guys have drawn ridiculously high grades through the G1 (I've booked up to Night 8) but against each other has been a different case twice now.

By the process of elimination I can confirm that: Shelton Benjamin > AJ Styles. :p

Just how good is Alberto's Japan pop that you could put him over Shibata, and how over is Joe? Because if Alberto is over like dover, then maybe you should bring him in on a more permanent nature.

He signed as a Main Eventer. I never checked before I signed him (adding him was a prediction prize) but yeah, he has 70 pop all over Japan. :p By comparison, Shibata is hovering around mid 70's right now. Joe is an Upper Midcarder with around 60 pop all over Japan.
