G1 Climax 25 Night 3

July 28th, 2015

Two days from the last event, the G1 Climax moves from Fukuoka to Nagoya.

Hiroshi Tanahashi and Shinsuke Nakamura will be putting their feet up and resting their much talked about, possibly injured lower backs as Kota Ibushi and Kazuchika Okada wrestle for the spotlight. Elsewhere, IWGP Heavyweight Champion; Tetsuya Naito and the leader of the Bullet Club; AJ Styles, both have dates with destruction when they face Katsuyori Shibata and Hirooki Goto respectively.

Tomohiro Ishii

Roderick Strong - Gaijin match seems like a place Roddy can pick up points.

AEP - Meh, since he's over I guess you'll probably give him a few points... I wouldn't.

Marufuji - Yano got his cheap win right out of the gates, so now it's JTTS time.

Kojima - A Kozy win.

Samoa Joe - I'm still calling him a potential dark horse.

Suzuki

AJ Styles

Naito - This is one I'm really interested to see which way you go, complete tossup.

Okada - Raynah-maykah steamrolling this G1 for a bit longer.

Show's coming tomorrow. In the meantime, I'll reply to some comments since I always struggle to do that. Been doing this for like a year and a half now and I still don't know how to reply to prediction comments, or even if I should haha.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Roderick Strong (0) vs. Shelton X Benjamin (2)

Comments: he went over joe so....

He didn't, Joe beat him. Shelton got his win against Yano.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Kota Ibushi (2) vs. Kazuchika Okada (2)

Comments: Okada is the future ace, Ibushi is the enemy ace.

I hesitate to call him the ace of the future because he's consistently outperformed Tanahashi throughout my save. But the narrative is the narrative I guess.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Tomohiro Ishii (2) vs. Bad Luck Fale (2)

Comments: Bad Luck Fale can stick with 2 points he doesn't need to win anymore.

You'll never win any points with that mindset.:p

AEP - Meh, since he's over I guess you'll probably give him a few points... I wouldn't.

Not gonna lie to you Beej, if it wasn't for a prediction prize I never would have added him. I'm actually not a fan of his work and find him lazy and uninspired most of the time. But his grades in my save tell a different story...

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Naomichi Marufuji (2) vs. Toru Yano (2)

Comments: At this point, I'm afraid of picking in any Yano match...

That's been the idea all along. :D

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Alberto El Patron (2) vs. Karl Anderson (2)

Comments: Anderson deserves this, half push Karl?

I'd like to do something with him but New Japan in real life just use him to put Shinsuke, Tana and Okada over all the time. I'd love to do something with him but I fear this diary may be over before I get that opportunity.

Also, I love the justification on your picks. I like this guy, I dislike this guy, haha it's brilliant.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Tomohiro Ishii (2) vs. Bad Luck Fale (2)

Comments: Fale doing his normal G1 sprint of actually looking semi-competent.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Roderick Strong (0) vs. Shelton X Benjamin (2)

Comments: Shelton can eat a loss and stay relevant. Roddy getting at least one win makes him look decent.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Alberto El Patron (2) vs. Karl Anderson (2)

Comments: G1 can always see some draws and I'm not fond of either man.

Comments: YANO. TO. RU. ETERNAL.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Comments: LOS SUZUKINABLES?

G1 Climax 25 Block A

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Tomohiro Ishii (2) vs. Bad Luck Fale (2)

A superb opener, if a little formulaic and "by the numbers". Fale dominated early on but found Ishii's spirit hard to break. The Stone Pitbull kept coming back, refusing to be bullied as he used his superior speed and striking power to put Fale on the back foot. But The Underboss' size was just too much for the NEVER Openweight Champion and he couldn't answer referee Marty Asami's count after a Bad Luck Fall.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Roderick Strong (0) vs. Shelton X Benjamin (2)

A really great technical wrestling match but not one that the crowd warmed to until the finishing stretch. The jury is still out on whether Strong is a competitor worthy of the G1 Climax but he's certainly putting on good matches. He even takes it a step further, winning this one with his first Sick Kick (Running single leg dropkick) of the tournament.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Alberto El Patron (2) vs. Karl Anderson (2)

Sometimes the work is good, sometimes it's not. Both Alberto and Anderson will get to the back and shake their heads, tonight was just not their night. This match featured several mis queues and sloppy sequences that just went nowhere. Luckily, the two managed to salvage something towards the close. Alberto only found thin air on an Enzuigiri but saw the Gun Stun coming and countered that into a Cross Armbreaker for the submission victory.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Naomichi Marufuji (2) vs. Toru Yano (2)

Marufuji took the high ground and decided that he needed to prolong this match as much as he could. Yano couldn't get any momentum going and his usual trickery was useless! But rather than a crash, the finish was a bit of a whimper. Yano couldn't hold Marufuji down for three on the backslide and got a Bicycle High Knee to the kisser, the impact of which was enough to send YTR and his beer belly into a slumber for at least three seconds.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Yuji Nagata (2) vs. Satoshi Kojima (0)

Time for something a little more serious. Lots of history here, even in G1 Climax tournaments alone. They met in the G1 Climax of 1999 and 2010 where Nagata was victorious both times, but their last two singles meetings (G1 Climax 2012, G1 Climax 2014) saw Kojima take home the victory.

This was something of a tie breaker and both men fought valiantly for the valuable two points. Rather than a wrestling match resembling a chess game, this was more arm wrestling - a battle that came down to endurance and straight power. The victor was always going to be the veteran that most wanted to prove they still had it. And Satoshi Kojima was the victor on the night, fighting out of a Backdrop with stiff elbows before putting the Anti-Aging Star away with a Cozy Lariat.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Tomoaki Honma (0) vs. Samoa Joe (2)

An utterly ridiculous match and one that both men will be feeling the effects of for the rest of the tournament. Joe beat the absolute life out of Honma but the IWGP Tag Team Champion just refused to say die, absorbing blow after blow after blow and still coming back with some kind of Kokeshi variation. But eventually, Honma's body could take no more punishment. Joe's 275lbs frame just too much to break down, eventually the Samoan Submission Machine hit the Muscle Buster and locked on the Coquina Clutch with referee Marty Asami adjudicating that Honma was unfit to continue.

A cool down match, just an opportunity for fans to pop out and grab refreshments. Much-needed ring time is always benefiting youngsters Komatsu & U-T but they were a class apart tonight. Despite a willing effort, TAKA left Komatsu no choice but to submit to his Crossface.

A bit of an off-night for both Nakanishi and Watanabe, neither putting in their best performance. Perhaps even they know that the match was a tad inconsequential? But either way, it ranks as an L in the record books as Watanabe falls to the Gallows Pole.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Togi Makabe (2) vs. Minoru Suzuki (0)

There was very little respect on display here - in fact, this match started with Suzuki slapping Makabe in the face. But soon thereafter, Suzuki clocked on that he was always going to lose a brawl and smartly took Makabe to the mat to display his submission proficiency. Bending Makabe's fingers back, an eery sight to most, but Suzuki relished his opponent's anguish. He was in control until the Unchained King Kong gave him a receipt in the form of an extra-hard King Kong Lariat. Setting about putting Suzuki in his place, Makabe gave him two Powerbombs and then finished him off with the King Kong Knee Drop.

Suzuki was conscious some 30 seconds later though and threw a tantrum as he took off through the exit lane. Singling out young lion Yohei Komatsu, Suzuki shoved him through a row of chairs and probably set off to try and find Makabe backstage.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Hirooki Goto (4) vs. AJ Styles (2)

The match of the tournament so far, the intensity of this clash was off the charts. So much was up for grabs and neither Goto nor Styles wanted to let this contest go lightly. Goto may have thought his hard strikes held the key to victory but he was hesitant to give Styles such a valuable opportunity to counter and instead took to chain wrestling and more grounded wrestling moves.

That said, Styles was still too slick for him, his Pele Kick being the perfect answer to a wayward Discus Lariat. In truth, Goto just wasn't good enough. He didn't have the skills to compete with an in form AJ Styles who rocked through his signature offence before one could even pronounce Ushikoroshi. He went for a Shouten Kai prematurely with Styles fighting out with a knee to the skull. Shortly after, the Bloody Sunday connected and The Phenomenal One put his finger gun to Goto's chin, finishing him off shortly after with the Styles Clash.

G1 Climax 25 Block B

Tetsuya Naito (2) vs. Katsuyori Shibata (2)

Shibata's black trunks are not the garb of a young lion yet to earn his stripes, he's simply a no-nonsense shoot fighter that wants to beat seven shades of crap out of you and leave you barely breathing. That was his aim again tonight and he took total exception to Naito's gratuitously long entrance and subsequent apathy towards this very important match. But the Stardust Genius isn't the IWGP Heavyweight Champion for no reason, he showed great heart to withstand Shibata's offence and keep coming back with something equally as strong.

Shibata suddenly became far less favoured. He was less fresh and his offence was no longer hard hitting. Naito had steadily worked him over until the bee had no sting. Shibata did nearly find a Sleeper Hold but Naito countered it with a Jawbreaker and hit Gloria (Lifting hammerlock cradle hold dropped into a sitout side powerslam) soon after. Rather than going for the Stardust Press, Naito waited until The Wrestler was standing before finishing him off with the Standing Shiranui he pinned Tanahashi with.

"Easy win!" is the English translation to the first words Tetsuya Naito spoke as he celebrated post-match. He cracked a grin. One could accuse him of overconfidence, but he was instead simply a very sore winner.

As soon as he had shook the cobwebs, Shibata power walked to the back clutching his neck. Will he ever have time for his fans?

Naito held his title belt aloft. For the timebeing, it appears he is very much on course to win the G1 Climax himself and have a day off when Wrestle Kingdom 10 arrives.

G1 Climax 25 Block A

Kota Ibushi (2) vs. Kazuchika Okada (2)

The third singles match between these two as Okada beat Ibushi at his native DDT in 2013, then beat him again on NJPW's 42nd Anniversary show the following year. Ibushi's early aggression tells the story of a man desperate to overcome this obstacle, Okada's already in his head before the match has even really started. The IWGP Intercontinental Champion was reeling but found his footing after a Flapjack gave him the opportunity to slow the pace. Keeping Ibushi grounded, Okada showboated at every possible opportunity and rubbed the Golden Star's inferiority into his skin as much as possibly could. Angered, Ibushi fought back with straight slaps and kicks to the thigh and chest to down Okada before he flattened him with a Standing Corkscrew Moonsault.

Ibushi hit an array of different moves, most of them displaying otherworldly athleticism and yet none of them were enough to put The Rainmaker away. Ibushi was frustrated, even more so when he rebounded off the ropes just to be greeted by a Too Awesome Dropkick to the jaw. Okada didn't give his opponent any time to recover, forcefully pulling Ibushi back to his feet by his long hair. From the Gutwrench into the Tombstone position, Ibushi fought the move with desperate swings of his long legs. But Okada was strong enough to keep him where he wanted him and jammed the top of Ibushi's head into the canvas. We all knew what was next, including the three men in the ring. Okada attempted the Rainmaker Lariat but Ibushi still had the wherewithal to duck under. A more experienced competitor would choose a wise counter now but Ibushi attempts a Pele Kick and well... Okada sees it coming.

He sidesteps and despite Ibushi adjusting himself in midair to land on his feet, he's grabbed from behind and sent careening backwards into canvas courtesy of Okada's beautiful Bridging German Suplex. Despite the kick out, Okada kept his left hand grasped on his adversary's right arm and bought Ibushi back to his feet by his trunks. At the second time of asking, the devastating Rainmaker Lariat connected and the rest was history.

http://i1354.photobucket.com/albums/q685/RynWlsn/NJPW%202015/NewRoster/icokada75.jpg

On a night devoid of Shinsuke Nakamura and Hiroshi Tanahashi, the spotlight was Kazuchika Okada's. He didn't even have to snatch it from them tonight.

Gedo entered the ring and the celebration began. The Rainmaker's overenthusiastic manager reminded everybody just how damn great Okada was. He's the new Ace, he's Nakamura's worst nightmare. He's Ibushi's kryptonite, he's your IWGP Intercontinental Champion! And when it's all said and done, "THE RAINNNNN-MAKAAHHHHHHH!" will be the winner of G1 Climax 25 and will be the first ever unified IWGP Champion!

A smug nod later and Okada all but confirms. He thanks Nagoya for coming out just to watch him win again and promises them that money will rain down on them for years for come.
