What exactly is Misc in the finances?

Recommended Posts

Got a high misc finances which means I've lost money in the past 2 months for the first time in a while.

I'm confused as to where the misc charges are coming from though. I haven't signed anyone new other than a few low-cost developmental contracts; now have I done anything different.

It's... stuff.

You know, things.

Miscellaneous things.

I believe it's meant to cover things like advertising, back office employment and costs, legal fees, insurance, things like that - at Cult, you're expected to be a 'professional' company, even if you don't have the money to do so.

It's also where expenses go such as alcohol and prostitutes.

The alcohol and prostitutes that were present at my last event were for myself, and myself alone. That was all paid for out-of-pocket, and not in any way commissioned using the company credit card.

It's been touched upon here, but I'll elaborate.

These 'misc' expenses are all to do with the difference in size between a Regional and Cult sized fed. If you think about the scale difference between the two it makes sense, from a business / behind the scenes perspective. This is before we get to costs like the New Jack Bail Fund, the Sandman Cocaine Account, the legal expenses of Arn Anderson and Psycho Sid drunkenly stabbing each other in hotel rooms, etc. All that Spandex costs a fortune. And do you think the wrestler's long, flowing hair gets so big and luscious for free? But in all seriousness, it's the day-to-day boring crap that costs all the money. That's what the Misc Costs are.

In a Small / Regional fed, the owner and a team of volunteers might store the company's merchandise / ring / equipment in their homes or garages. A Cult sized fed would have so much merchandise and gear they'd need their own warehouse, along with storesmen and admin staff to run it. Big difference in miscellaneous expenses there. You'd need a barcoding system, software and lots of other really non-interesting stuff to keep track of it day to day, which is expensive. A smaller fed would probably just have a spreadsheet on some guy's laptop.

In a Small / Regional fed, all ticket and merchandise sales would be done via volunteers via a small website and their own phones. A Cult size fed would need a professional dedicated sales team, complete with telemarketing system, IT, and a shit-load of coffee, plus a fancy office to put them all in. There's a huge difference in miscellaneous expenses there.

Advertising in a Small / Regional fed would be done by the owner / booker / whoever, ad-hoc, whenever they got chance. A Cult sized fed would have a marketing team and staff throughout the country selling advertising at shows, doing TV campaigns and promoting the fed locally as well as nationally. This would require not only a big marketing budget, but a lot of behind the scenes expenditure, staff and expense. All miscellaneous.

Paul Heyman on a live WWE Network interview bemoaned his lack of an Ad Sales team, saying it was a key reason ECW went under. While obviously a load of shit, Paul E's point illustrates key expenditure needed for a Cult sized fed, which Small / Regional feds would probably squeeze by without. Smaller feds cut out a huge amount of cost thanks to key people multi-tasking and freely giving their own time and resources. But feds get to a certain size and need professionals to run their operations for them. The difference in cost is a kick in the nuts, and can put unprepared feds out of business.
